Prior works note that identifying problematic play is a leading barrier to treatment seeking, contributing to low treatment rates in those with gambling problems (e.g., Bijker et al., 2022; Suurvali et al., 2012a). While research has looked at treatment seekers' motives for treatment (Gainsbury et al., 2014; Suurvali et al., 2012b), the situations or signs (anticipated motives) individuals look for that suggest they would need treatment in the future remains unknown. Participants were gamblers (N = 1,791) from a census-matched U.S. sample of adults who reported no concerns about their gambling. Participants completed questions assessing how much money they would have to lose while gambling to think they might have a problem and what factors might motivate them to pursue treatment for gambling problems in the future. Participants reported a wide range of financial loss that would suggest they had a problem, and higher income men who gambled more frequently reported higher necessary losses. There was little variation in endorsement (40–60%) of 14 situations that may lead them to seek treatment in the future (e.g., felt guilty). However, income, gender identity, and problem gambling behavior were linked to the endorsement of some of these anticipated motives, with some differences in endorsement between those engaging in high- and low-level problem gambling. Collectively, results are consistent with the inference that many individuals may not be aware of what problematic gambling would look like for them, though income, gender identity, and problem gambling behavior may impact their consideration of anticipated motives. Alcohol use disorder (AUD) commonly cooccurs with social anxiety disorder (SAD). With changes to diagnostic criteria of psychiatric disorders in the DSM-5, the present study sought to observe the associations between daily alcohol use, AUD, and social anxiety in a large sample of individuals with lifetime (N = 1255) and past-year (N = 908) SAD. The sample was derived from a large nationally representative study of adults in the United States. Of note, we found that at the symptom level, daily alcohol use and AUD were significantly related to panic attacks due to social anxiety, subjective distress, and impairment in relationships. Daily alcohol use and AUD were significantly associated with lifetime SAD severity; however, only past-year daily alcohol use was significantly related to past-year SAD severity. We also found that AUD was significantly related to greater treatment-seeking for SAD, and both AUD and daily alcohol use were significantly associated with lifetime history of suicide attempts even after covarying for SAD severity. The present study provides an updated investigation of alcohol use in individuals with DSM-5 SAD, and it underscores the significance of daily alcohol use as an important factor to consider in individuals with SAD. • Social anxiety is highly comorbid with alcohol use; further investigation using DSM-5 criteria is necessary. • We examined AUD and daily alcohol use in lifetime and past-year samples of individuals with SAD. • Daily alcohol use and AUD were significantly associated with lifetime SAD severity. • Only daily alcohol use was associated with past-year SAD. • AUD was related to greater odds of treatment seeking and suicide attempt history. Abstract Background Diarrhea is considered to be one of the major public health concerns in developing countries. It has a detrimental impact, reflecting one of the highest child mortality rates globally, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa, where 2 out of every 10 children in Uganda under the age of five die. The objective of this study was to investigate the factors associated with time to treatment seeking by caretakers of children under-five with Diarrhea in Uganda. Method DOVE dataset of 745 caretakers in a prospective and retrospective incidence-based study using multi-stage sampling design was used in the assessment. The analysis was done using a time-to-event approach using life tables, Kaplan Meier survival analysis and multilevel proportional hazards model. Results Kaplan-Meier survival analysis indicated the median time to seeking treatment among 745 caretakers of children under-Five after onset of diarrhea was 2 days. The multi-level proportional hazards model of a Weibull distribution showed that the estimated frailty variance was 0.13, indicating heterogeneity of treatment seeking time by caretakers of under-five children with diarrhea across regions in Uganda. Significant factors found to influence time to treatment-seeking by caretakers of children under-five with diarrhea were, male children (HR = 0.82; 95% CI = 0.71–0.95, p = 0.010), belonging to richest wealth quintile (HR = 1.37; 95% CI = 1.05–1.78, p = 0.022), and residing more than 5 km away from a health facility (HR = 0.68; 95% CI = 0.56–0.84, p = 0.000). Conclusions There are delays in seeking diarrhea treatment in Uganda because two days are enough to claim a life after dehydration.The policymakers should pay attention to formulate effective intervention to sensitize caregivers on the importance of early treatment-seeking behavior to avoid severe malnutrition caused by diarrhea. Community awareness program should also be encouraged particularly in areas of more than 5 km from the health facility to make people aware of the necessity to take prompt action to seek care in the early stage.

Objective Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is among the most prevalent substance use disorders in the USA. Despite availability of effective interventions, treatment initiation and engagement remain low. Existing interventions target motivation and practical barriers to accessing treatment among individuals established within treatment systems. In contrast, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Treatment-Seeking (CBT-TS) aims to elicit and modify treatment-seeking beliefs to increase treatment-seeking behaviors among treatment-naïve samples. We aim to understand which beliefs were endorsed by those who did/did not initiate treatment, including changes in number of drinking days. Method We examined treatment seeking beliefs elicited during CBT-TS among community-based adults with moderate–severe AUD with no treatment history. In this study, we discuss which beliefs were modifiable (i.e. those discussed during the intervention among individuals who subsequently attended treatment and may be associated with treatment-seeking behaviors). Results Of the 194 participants who received the intervention, 16 categories of beliefs were endorsed. Of the 38 participants (19.6%) who attended treatment, the most frequently endorsed belief was 'Not wanting specific types of substance use treatment or supports' (50%), a belief that may inhibit treatment seeking. The idea 'Treatment is positive' (47%) was also frequently cited, a belief that may facilitate treatment seeking. Conclusions This study describes the beliefs that were more frequently endorsed among adults with moderate–severe, but untreated AUD who reported attending treatment following CBT-TS. Findings point to the potential of discussing and modifying treatment-seeking beliefs among treatment-naïve adults with severe AUD to increase treatment-seeking behaviors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Females with opioid use disorder (OUD) rarely seek help for addiction. We present a series of seven females with OUD attending a tertiary care addiction treatment setting in Assam between December 2022 to August 2023. Most of the patients were primary-educated, young adults, housewives, from lower to middle socioeconomic strata, and were residents of rural or semi-urban areas. All were married, and around half of them were separated. All the patients were dependent on heroin and tobacco. Five of them initiated heroin use while modeling their spouse. Three patients were injecting heroin, and one was seropositive with both HCV and HIV. Five patients received sublingual buprenorphine-naloxone, and three of them followed up subsequently. Financial difficulty, poor family support, and intimate partner violence were major challenges for treatment-seeking and regular follow-up. This case series highlights the need for systematic study and gender-responsive care of females with OUD in Assam.

Abstract Early and prompt treatment-seeking for malaria is necessary to reduce the progression of the disease to its severe forms and the associated mortality. Various studies have indicated that treatments sought for malaria were not always within the recommended timeframe. Therefore, this study aims to assess factors influencing delay in malaria treatment seeking at public health facilities in South Gonder, Ethiopia. An unmatched case–control study was conducted among 322 individuals, comprising 161 cases and 161 controls, who were randomly selected malaria patients visiting public health facilities in South Gonder District, Ethiopia, from May 20/2022 to June 25/2022. An interviewer-administered questionnaire was used to collect data, which were subsequently cleaned and entered into Epi data. Recent evidence suggests that multiple emotional disorders may be better assessed using dimensional models of psychopathology. The current study utilized a cross-sectional population survey of college students (N = 8613 participants) to examine the extent to which broad psychopathology factors accounted for specific associations between emotional problems and clinical and behavioral validators: suicidality, dysfunctional attitudes, and treatment seeking. Confirmatory factor models were estimated to identify the best structure of psychopathology. Models were then estimated to examine the broad and specific associations between each psychopathology indicator and the clinical and behavioral validators. The hierarchical model of psychopathology with internalizing problems at the top, fear, and distress at the second level, and five specific symptom dimensions at the third level evidenced the best fit. The associations between symptom indicators of psychopathology and clinical and behavioral validators were relatively small and inconsistent. Instead, much of the association between clinical and behavioral validators and emotional problems operated at a higher-order level. The cross-sectional nature of the survey precludes the ability to make conclusions regarding causality. Researchers should focus on investigating the shared or common components across emotional disorders, particularly concerning individuals presenting with higher rates of suicidal ideation dysfunctional attitudes, and help-seeking behavior. Using higher-order dimensions of psychopathology could simplify the complex presentation of multiple co-occurring disorders and suggest valid constructs for future investigations. • Validators are linked to higher-order internalizing dimensions, emphasizing shared associations over specific emotional diosrders. • Distress and Fear add to our understanding of associations with clinical validators beyond the second-order internalizing factor. • Dimensional psychopathology considers specific symptoms and broader dimensions for more precise clinical evaluations. Background: A significant number of people with bulimia nervosa (BN) or binge‐eating disorder (BED) do not seek professional help. Important reasons include limited knowledge of eating disorders (EDs), feelings of shame, treatment costs, and restricted access to specialized healthcare. In this study, we explored if a novel therapy delivered in a primary care setting could overcome these barriers. We investigated factors such as motivation and expectations and included the patients' and newly trained therapists' perspectives. Method: We interviewed 10 women with BN (n = 2) or BED (n = 8), enrolled in the Physical Exercise and Dietary therapy (PED‐t) program, in a Healthy Life Center (HLC) located in a primary healthcare facility. Interview topics discussed were motivations for and expectations of therapy, and the treatment location. In addition, 10 therapists from HLC's were interviewed on their experiences with the PED‐t training program and expectations of running PED‐t within their service. The semi‐structured interviews were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. Results: Most patients had limited knowledge about EDs and first realized the need for professional help after learning about PED‐t. Patients exhibited strong motivations for treatment and a positive perception of both the PED‐t, the new treatment setting, and the therapists' competencies. The therapists, following a brief training program, felt confident in their abilities to treat EDs and provide PED‐t. With minor operational adjustments, PED‐t can seamlessly be integrated into national HLC service locations. Conclusion: PED‐t is an accessible therapeutic service that can be delivered in a primary care environment in a stepped‐care therapy model. Public Significance: This study investigates the views and experiences of patients and newly trained therapists of PED‐t (Physical Exercise and Dietary therapy), a new program‐led primary care therapy for binge‐eating spectrum eating disorders. The treatment and the locations for the intervention, that is, local health care centers, were found to be highly acceptable to both patients and therapists, thus PED‐t could easily be integrated as a first step into a step‐care delivery model. Early intervention is important for improved outcomes for young people with EDs, yet help-seeking is low and individuals often have a significantly protracted start to treatment, suggesting that early intervention is not well established in the ED field. Previous reviews on facilitators and barriers to early intervention for EDs largely cover perceived barriers related to patient variables and perspectives, whereas clinician-, service-, and healthcare system-related facilitators and barriers are less frequently reviewed. The aim of this review is to synthesize the literature on barriers to and facilitators of early intervention for EDs, regarding patient-, clinician-, service-, and healthcare system-related factors. A narrative review was conducted by searching for relevant peer-reviewed, English-language articles published up until July 2023 on PubMed and PsychINFO. The search was conducted in two steps. First, key search terms were used to identify existing reviews and meta-analyses on facilitators and barriers to early intervention for EDs. Then, additional search terms were added to search for primary and secondary research on patient/family, clinician, service, and healthcare system-related barriers and facilitators. The identified literature shows that, after overcoming intrinsic, motivational barriers (such as self-stigma, denial, and ambivalence), help-seeking individuals may be met with long service waiting lists and limited treatment options. Despite these barriers, there is ongoing research into early intervention in practice, which aims to reach underserved populations and facilitate early intervention despite high service demands and shortages of trained healthcare professionals. Funding for ED research and services has historically been low, and there is also a research-practice gap. This highlights the need for increased consideration of, and funding for early intervention for EDs, to remove barriers as well as facilitate discussions around how to make early intervention programs scalable and sustainable.Keywords: anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, help-seeking, treatment seeking, mental health

Introduction: In Sweden, alcohol consumption has increased among people aged 65 years and older. Among older adults, 2.7%ofmen and 1.6%of women fulfill criteria for alcohol dependence. The large majority do not seek treatment. Little is known about treatment seeking among older adults with alcohol dependence. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe elderly's views on alcohol dependence, treatment seeking, and treatment preferences. Possible gender differences will also be explored. Methods: Between December 2017 and March 2018, two focus group interviews and 10 individual interviews were conducted, using semistructured interviews. In total, 13 elderly participated. Data were analyzed using the framework approach. Results: Two themes and five subthemes were identified: (a) "regret and feelings of shame when losing control" consisting of two subthemes, namely, (1) loss of control over your alcohol consumption and (2) regret and feelings of shame, and (b) "taking back control over your life" consisting of three subthemes, namely, (1) becoming aware that you have problematic alcohol use, (2) to seek help for alcohol dependence, and (3) views on treatment options and treatment settings. Conclusions: Increased alcohol use was attributed to a decrease in responsibility and belonging. Alcohol dependence was associated with shame and stigma, which was especially strong for women. Preferred treatments were tailored for the individual, rather than to general factors such as age or gender. Moreover, important components of treatment were to be met with respect, continuity, and controlled drinking as a treatment goal. Background and Aims: There is little RCT evidence that brief interventions improve treatment seeking in individuals with severe alcohol use disorder (AUD) or treatment seeking reduces alcohol use. The aim was to test the efficacy of a brief intervention to increase treatment seeking in treatment naïve adults with severe AUD and measure its effects on alcohol use. Design: Parallel group, non‐pharmacologic RCT with intervention (n = 197) and active control (n = 203) conditions, with blinded assessors conducting follow‐ups at 1, 3 and 6 months. Setting: Online recruitment in a 17‐county region of upstate New York, USA. Participants: Inclusion criteria consisted of ages ≥18 years, Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test score ≥16, exceeds recommended limits for alcohol use and no history of AUD treatment. n = 400; 50% female; 79% white; mean age, 40.7; mean education, 14.6 years. Intervention and comparator: One‐session telephone‐delivered interventions: Cognitive‐Behavioral Therapy for Treatment Seeking (CBT‐TS; intervention), review of a National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism pamphlet on AUD treatment (control). Measurements Self‐report of any AUD treatment use over 3 months (primary outcome) and two standard measures of alcohol use over 6 months (secondary outcomes). Findings Intent‐to‐treat analyses were used. Assessment follow‐up rates were ≥93%. Any alcohol‐related treatment use over 3‐month follow‐up was obtained by 38 (19%) intervention participants and 36 (18%) control participants, a non‐significant difference, χ2 [1] = 0.16, P = 0.689. Secondary analysis showed a significant interaction term between sex and intervention assignment (β = −1.197, P = 0.027). The interaction suggested CBT‐TS was effective in men (22% vs 13%), although the evidence was somewhat weak (P = 0.071), and it was not effective in women (17% vs 24%). Conclusions: A one‐session cognitive‐behavioral therapy intervention to increase treatment seeking in treatment naïve adults with severe alcohol use disorder did not increase treatment seeking. Abstract Background Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is one of the most stigmatized diagnosis, and stigma imposes a major barrier to treatment seeking. There is a need to develop interventions that can reduce stigma and increase treatment seeking. Little is known about the effects of video materials. The aim of this study was to investigate effects of different videos. The primary outcome was public stigma, and secondary outcomes were: self-stigma, and motivation to change own alcohol use; talking to someone else about their alcohol use; seeking information about AUD treatment or seeking AUD treatment. Methods This is a three-armed double blind randomized controlled study. The study included 655 Danish adults. Data was collected at a study webpage, and the survey could be completed anywhere with Internet access. After informed consent and completing baseline measures, participants were randomized, 1:1:1 ratio, to a video (video 1 n = 228; video 2 n = 198; video 3 n = 229). Video 1 and 2 have been used in a national mass media campaign and video 3 was recorded for use in the present study. Immediately after exposure, follow-up measures were completed. Outcomes were analyzed with mixed effects linear regression. Results In total n = 616 completed follow-up (video 1 n = 215; video 2 n = 192; video 3 n = 209). Abstract Background School-aged children (SAC) have an increased risk to contract malaria and play a major role in its transmission dynamics. However, their malaria prevention experience is poor. Thus, the effect of malaria prevention education (MPE) on bed net utilization, treatment seeking from a health facility and cumulative incidence of malaria was evaluated in Southern Ethiopia. Methods A two arm cluster randomized controlled trial was conducted by recruiting 2038 SAC from 32 schools. Structured questionnaire was used to collect data on socio-demographic, economic, bed net ownership, bed net utilization, whether the participated child suffered from malaria and has got treatment from a health facility. Generalized mixed effect logistic regression using school as random variable was used to assess the effect of the intervention on the outcome variables. Results The ownership of bed net in households of the control and intervention schools was similar respectively with 84.6 and 88.6% (Crude Odds Ratio (COR): 1.5; 95%CI: 0.5–4.8). The percentage of SAC slept under the bed net the night before the survey was also similar (55.1% versus 54.0%); COR:1.04; 95%CI: 0.5–2.4). Bed net utilization was affected by household size to the bed net ratio ≤ 2 (Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) = 1.6; 95%CI:1.3–2.1), bed net utilization at baseline of the study (AOR = 2.3; 95%CI:1.5–3.6), and history of malaria attack in the last twelve months (AOR = 1.3; 95%CI:1.01–1.8). Reported cumulative incidence of malaria and treatment seeking from a health facility by SAC was similar between intervention and control arms: -2.1% (COR = 0.8; 95%CI: 0.5–1.5) and 9.6% (COR = 1.4; 95%CI: 0.4–4.3) respectively. The reported incidence of malaria was affected by altitude (AOR = 0.5; 95%CI: 0.3–0.8), low and medium wealth index (AOR = 0.7; 95%CI: 0.5–0.96 and AOR = 0.7; 95%CI: 0.5–0.98), adequate bed net number for household members (AOR = 0.7; 95%CI:0.5–0.9) and bed net utilization (AOR = 1.3; 95%CI:1.1–1.8). Conclusions MPE had no significant effect on the use of malaria prevention measures considered, treatment seeking from a health facility and reported cumulative incidence of malaria though bed net use was associated with malaria incidence. Before organizing any health education program, sustainable implementation efforts have to be warranted especially in SAC, a neglected but relevant vulnerable and reservoirs. Abstract Background A key factor driving the development and maintenance of antibacterial resistance (ABR) is individuals’ use of antibiotics (ABs) to treat illness. To better understand motivations and context for antibiotic use we use the concept of a patient treatment-seeking pathway: a treatment journey encompassing where patients go when they are unwell, what motivates their choices, and how they obtain antibiotics. This paper investigates patterns and determinants of patient treatment-seeking pathways, and how they intersect with AB use in East Africa, a region where ABR-attributable deaths are exceptionally high. Methods The Holistic Approach to Unravelling Antibacterial Resistance (HATUA) Consortium collected quantitative data from 6,827 adult outpatients presenting with urinary tract infection (UTI) symptoms in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda between February 2019- September 2020, and conducted qualitative in-depth patient interviews with a subset (n = 116). We described patterns of treatment-seeking visually using Sankey plots and explored explanations and motivations using mixed-methods. Using Bayesian hierarchical regression modelling, we investigated the associations between socio-demographic, economic, healthcare, and attitudinal factors and three factors related to ABR: self-treatment as a first step, having a multi-step treatment pathway, and consuming ABs. Results Although most patients (86%) sought help from medical facilities in the first instance, many (56%) described multi-step, repetitive treatment-seeking pathways, which further increased the likelihood of consuming ABs. Higher socio-economic status patients were more likely to consume ABs and have multi-step pathways. Reasons for choosing providers (e.g., cost, location, time) were conditioned by wider structural factors such as hybrid healthcare systems and AB availability. Conclusion There is likely to be a reinforcing cycle between complex, repetitive treatment pathways, AB consumption and ABR. A focus on individual antibiotic use as the key intervention point in this cycle ignores the contextual challenges patients face when treatment seeking, which include inadequate access to diagnostics, perceived inefficient public healthcare and ease of purchasing antibiotics without prescription. Pluralistic healthcare landscapes may promote more complex treatment seeking and therefore inappropriate AB use. We recommend further attention to healthcare system factors, focussing on medical facilities (e.g., accessible diagnostics, patient-doctor interactions, information flows), and community AB access points (e.g., drug sellers).

Aim: Early intervention in eating disorders (EDs) is hampered by a lack of validated measures of barriers to treatment seeking. The present study examined the factor structure of the Perceived Barriers to Psychological Treatment scale (PBPT) and a combination of PBPT and Barriers to Seeking Help for ED items (BATSH‐ED) with respect to treatment‐seeking for an ED. Method: Participants were 456 female university students aged 17–25 reporting a wide range of disordered eating severity. Confirmatory factor analyses were conducted with the whole sample followed by correlational and regression analyses with a high‐risk sample to assess validity of the selected questionnaire items. Results: Four models were tested. First, we replicated the original PBPT 8‐factor structure in our sample with comparable fit indices. Second, the addition of six ED items comprising a Denial and Ambivalence subscale improved model fit. Third and fourth, when only significant subscales predicting treatment seeking were retained, with removal of items with weak loadings, a 15‐item six‐factor solution provided a best fit. A range of psychosocial measures had relationships in the expected directions with the questionnaire subscales. In addition to disordered eating, the denial subscale was uniquely associated with treatment seeking. Conclusions: While the present study contributes to refining the assessment of barriers to help‐seeking, future studies should consider co‐design with lived experience to further improve the model fit of the questionnaire and improve predictiveness of help‐seeking. An exploratory investigation was conducted to assess the influence of provider types on a client’s perception of mental health stigmatization in a health care setting. A subsample of respondents (n = 2,323) to the Canadian Community Health Survey-Mental Health was included in the analysis. We used multiple regression to investigate the potential associations between provider types and number of providers seen for persons with mental health concerns experiencing health-care-related stigma. Seeking help from some groups was associated with increased odds of experiencing health care provider stigma. Seeing more professionals was also associated with an increased likelihood of experiencing health care provider stigma. The results clarify that individuals who experience mental illness often perceive discrimination and prejudice when seeking mental health treatment. Given the impact of stigma on treatment-seeking behavior, it is plausible that some mental health providers are contributing to the client’s choice not to seek care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background A minority of all individuals with alcohol use disorders (AUD) seek treatment. Since the suffering from AUD has severe consequences for both the individual and for society, it is important to improve the understanding of barriers to seeking treatment. Most studies of barriers thus far have been conducted in the United States of America or the United Kingdom. There is a need for studies from other contexts. The overall aim is to investigate barriers to treatment seeking for AUD. The specific aims are to: 1) describe barriers to AUD treatment at different levels of alcohol use. 2) compare gender differences regarding barriers to AUD treatment. Methods Study design: Cross-sectional. Participants: 1594 representative Danish adults from the general population aged 30–65 years. An online questionnaire was administrated by a market research company. The questionnaire covered demographic data, barriers to treatment and level of alcohol use. Analyses were performed by means of chi-2 test and logistic regression. Results The most common barriers were related to stigma and shame: admitting to others of having a problem, being labelled, fear of the consequences and that others would find out. Participants with higher severity of alcohol use were more likely to endorse a wish to handle alcohol problems themselves and to report barriers related to treatment services. Women with high severity of alcohol use, endorsed higher level of fear of the consequences than men. Conclusions There is an urgent need to reduce stigma around AUD. Individuals with higher severity of alcohol use report a lower willingness to seek professional treatment if a problem occurs. Especially among individuals with high severity of alcohol use there is a need to address gender specific barriers.

Background: School-aged children (SAC) have an increased risk to contract malaria and play a major role in its transmission dynamics. However, their malaria prevention experience is poor. Thus, the effect of malaria prevention education (MPE) on bed net utilization, treatment seeking from a health facility and cumulative incidence of malaria was evaluated in Southern Ethiopia. Methods: A two arm cluster randomized controlled trial was conducted by recruiting 2038 SAC from 32 schools. Structured questionnaire was used to collect data on socio-demographic, economic, bed net ownership, bed net utilization, whether the participated child suffered from malaria and has got treatment from a health facility. Generalized mixed effect logistic regression using school as random variable was used to assess the effect of the intervention on the outcome variables. Results: The ownership of bed net in households of the control and intervention schools was similar respectively with 84.6 and 88.6% (Crude Odds Ratio (COR): 1.5; 95%CI: 0.5–4.8). The percentage of SAC slept under the bed net the night before the survey was also similar (55.1% versus 54.0%); COR:1.04; 95%CI: 0.5–2.4). Bed net utilization was affected by household size to the bed net ratio ≤ 2 (Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) = 1.6; 95%CI:1.3–2.1), bed net utilization at baseline of the study (AOR = 2.3; 95%CI:1.5–3.6), and history of malaria attack in the last twelve months (AOR = 1.3; 95%CI:1.01–1.8). Reported cumulative incidence of malaria and treatment seeking from a health facility by SAC was similar between intervention and control arms: -2.1% (COR = 0.8; 95%CI: 0.5–1.5) and 9.6% (COR = 1.4; 95%CI: 0.4–4.3) respectively. The reported incidence of malaria was affected by altitude (AOR = 0.5; 95%CI: 0.3–0.8), low and medium wealth index (AOR = 0.7; 95%CI: 0.5–0.96 and AOR = 0.7; 95%CI: 0.5–0.98), adequate bed net number for household members (AOR = 0.7; 95%CI:0.5–0.9) and bed net utilization (AOR = 1.3; 95%CI:1.1–1.8). Conclusions: MPE had no significant effect on the use of malaria prevention measures considered, treatment seeking from a health facility and reported cumulative incidence of malaria though bed net use was associated with malaria incidence. Before organizing any health education program, sustainable implementation efforts have to be warranted especially in SAC, a neglected but relevant vulnerable and reservoirs. Cannabis use disorder (CUD) and frequency of use are highly related to social anxiety disorder (SAD). With updates to diagnostic criteria of psychiatric disorders and recent changes in cannabis laws, the present study sought to explore the relationships between cannabis use, CUD, and social anxiety in a large nationally representative sample of individuals with lifetime (N = 1255) and past-year SAD (N = 980). Notably, we found that at the symptom level, at least weekly cannabis use was significantly related to fear or avoidance of social situations interfering with relationships in both samples. Weekly + cannabis use and CUD were significantly associated with lifetime SAD symptom severity, but only weekly + cannabis use was related to SAD severity in the past-year sample. We also found that weekly + cannabis use but not CUD was related to greater odds of seeking treatment for SAD and suicide attempt history. Purpose: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is among the most highly prevalent and debilitating psychiatric disorders within the US population, but SAD has gone relatively unnoticed within the US veteran population. Preliminary research has demonstrated that SAD is related to decreased mental and physical functioning as well as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression among veterans. Methods: The present study investigated SAD and its relationship with demographic factors, psychiatric disorders, suicidality, treatment seeking, and social support among veterans. Multivariate survey weighted logistic regression analyses were conducted to observe these associations utilizing data from National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions which contained data on 3119 veterans. Results: SAD was found to be strongly related to PTSD and other anxiety disorder, and these disorders were related to increased treatment seeking for SAD. Further, SAD was associated with lifetime suicide attempts and decreased perceived social support in multivariate models adjusting for demographic factors and psychiatric comorbidities. Conclusion: This study highlights the relationships of SAD among veterans by demonstrating its associations with other psychiatric disorders, treatment seeking, suicide attempts, and social support. Background : A key factor driving the development and maintenance of antibacterial resistance (ABR) is individuals' use of antibiotics (ABs) to treat illness. To better understand motivations and context for antibiotic use we use the concept of a patient treatment-seeking pathway: a treatment journey encompassing where patients go when they are unwell, what motivates their choices, and how they obtain antibiotics. This paper investigates patterns and determinants of patient treatment-seeking pathways, and how they intersect with AB use in East Africa, a region where ABR-attributable deaths are exceptionally high. Methods: The Holistic Approach to Unravelling Antibacterial Resistance (HATUA) Consortium collected quantitative data from 6,827 adult outpatients presenting with urinary tract infection (UTI) symptoms in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda between February 2019- September 2020, and conducted qualitative in-depth patient interviews with a subset (n = 116). We described patterns of treatment-seeking visually using Sankey plots and explored explanations and motivations using mixed-methods. Using Bayesian hierarchical regression modelling, we investigated the associations between socio-demographic, economic, healthcare, and attitudinal factors and three factors related to ABR: self-treatment as a first step, having a multi-step treatment pathway, and consuming ABs. Results: Although most patients (86%) sought help from medical facilities in the first instance, many (56%) described multi-step, repetitive treatment-seeking pathways, which further increased the likelihood of consuming ABs. Higher socio-economic status patients were more likely to consume ABs and have multi-step pathways. Reasons for choosing providers (e.g., cost, location, time) were conditioned by wider structural factors such as hybrid healthcare systems and AB availability. Conclusion: There is likely to be a reinforcing cycle between complex, repetitive treatment pathways, AB consumption and ABR. A focus on individual antibiotic use as the key intervention point in this cycle ignores the contextual challenges patients face when treatment seeking, which include inadequate access to diagnostics, perceived inefficient public healthcare and ease of purchasing antibiotics without prescription. Pluralistic healthcare landscapes may promote more complex treatment seeking and therefore inappropriate AB use. We recommend further attention to healthcare system factors, focussing on medical facilities (e.g., accessible diagnostics, patient-doctor interactions, information flows), and community AB access points (e.g., drug sellers). Many obstetric fistula patients remain untreated or present late to treatment despite increasing surgical availability in Uga nda. We explored women's perceptions of the cause of their obstetric fistula and their treatment seeking behaviours, including barriers and facilitators to timely care access. In-depth interviews and focus group discussions were conducted from June-August 2014 among 33 women treated for obstetric fistula at Mulago Hospital, Kampala. Data were analysed to describe dimensions and commonalities of themes identified under perceived causes and treatment seeking experiences, and their intersection. Perceived obstetric fistula causes included delays in deciding on hospital delivery, lengthy labour, injury caused by the baby, health worker incompetence, and traditional beliefs. Treatment seeking timing varied. Early treatment seeking was facilitated by awareness of treatment availability through referral, the media, community members, and support by partners and children. Barriers to early treatment seeking included inadequate financial and social support, erroneous perceptions about fistula causes and curability, incorrect diagnoses, and delayed or lack of care at health facilities. Our study supports broad educational and awareness activities, facilitation of social and financial support for accessing care, and improving the quality of emergency obstetric care and fistula treatment surgical capacity to reduce women's suffering.

ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to examine whether people who screened positive for depression were more likely to have sought treatment if they had personal knowledge of other individuals with emotional or mental problems or of individuals who have sought treatment for them.MethodsParticipants who screened positive for current major depression (N=239) via an Internet-based depression screening study completed an online survey about seeking treatment for depression.ResultsAfter the authors controlled for social support, stigma, and demographic variables, analyses showed that individuals who personally knew someone with emotional or mental problems either within or outside of their family were more likely to themselves have sought treatment for depression. The same was true for those who personally knew someone-again either within or outside of their family-who had sought treatment for emotional or mental problems.ConclusionsPersonal knowledge of others with emotional problems or who had sought treatment for them may play a role in decisions about one's own treatment.

Recently, the athletic training community has paid increased attention to collegiate student-athlete mental health, mental health treatment-seeking behavior, and the effects of mental health factors on athletic and academic performance. Ongoing efforts to better educate and equip athletic trainers to help student-athletes in this regard should result in improved mental health–related outcomes. To examine changes in the mental health of student-athletes over the past decade compared with that of nonathlete students. Cross-sectional study. Colleges and universities in the United States. Varsity athletes (athletes; n = 54 479) and nonathlete students (nonathletes; n = 448 301) who completed the National College Health Assessment between 2011 and 2019. Surveys included responses (self-reported) to questions in 5 mental health–related categories: recent mental health symptoms, recent mental health diagnosis, mental health treatment-seeking behavior, receiving mental health information from the institution, and the recent effect of mental health factors on academic performance. Athletes consistently described lower symptom and diagnosis rates compared with nonathletes, except for attempted suicide, substance abuse, and eating disorders. Rates of diagnosis increased over time in both groups but remained lower in athletes. Treatment-seeking behavior and openness to future treatment increased over time in both groups but remained lower in athletes. Athletes received more information on stress reduction, substance abuse, eating disorders, and handling distress or violence compared with nonathletes. Both groups received information more frequently over time. Athletes reported fewer academic effects, especially for depression and anxiety, but these effects grew over time in both groups. The effects of injuries and extracurricular activities on academic performance were greater in athletes than in nonathletes. Athletes described overall lower levels of mental health symptoms, diagnoses, and academic effects compared with nonathletes. Whereas the rates in nonathletes climbed over the past decade, the rates in athletes broadly remained flat or climbed less rapidly. Increasingly positive attitudes toward treatment were encouraging, but the deficit in athletes relative to nonathletes persisted. Ongoing efforts of athletic trainers to educate athletes and guide them to mental health resources are needed to continue, or better yet to accelerate, the observed positive trends in information dissemination and treatment-seeking behavior. Increasing attention has been dedicated to studying behavioral health of non-deployed military personnel. This investigation explored the impacts of a variety of sociodemographic and health factors on key behavioral health outcomes among active duty personnel. A secondary analysis was conducted using 2014 Defense Health Agency Health Related Behaviors Survey data (unweighted n = 45,762, weighted n = 1,251,606). Three logistic regression models investigated factors associated with reporting symptomatology consistent with depression, anxiety, and stress. We found that after adjusting for sociodemographic and other health variables (e.g., sleep), deployment was associated with stress but not anxiety or depression. Although deployed personnel were more likely to report increased levels of stress overall, few differences with respect to the sources of stressors were identified. While behavioral health screening and treatment needs may differ for non-deployed and deployed personnel, programs to support mental and physical well-being among all service members should be robustly promoted. Study Question: How are educational level, labor market attachment and income associated with receiving a first ART treatment in either the public or private healthcare sector among women in Denmark?Summary Answer: Higher educational level and income as well as labor market attachment were associated with higher probability of initiating ART treatment at public and private fertility clinics among women in Denmark.What Is Known Already: Infertility is common in populations worldwide, and the approach to this issue differs between societies and healthcare systems. In the public Danish healthcare system, ART treatment is free of charge, and the direct cost for patients is therefore low. In the private healthcare sector in Denmark, ART treatment is self-financed. There is limited knowledge about the association between socioeconomic factors and seeking ART treatment, although previous studies have indicated that higher socioeconomic status is associated with seeking ART treatment.Study Design, Size, Duration: Women undergoing ART treatment during 1994-2016 registered in the Danish IVF register were individually linked with data from sociodemographic population registers using the Danish Personal Identification number. The study population consisted of 69 018 women treated with ART and 670 713 age-matched comparison women from the background population with no previous history of ART treatment.Participants/materials, Setting, Methods: The women included in the analyses were aged 18-45 years. The associations between attained educational level, labor market attachment and income and receiving a first ART treatment attempt were investigated for women either initiating treatment in the public sector or in the private sector, respectively. Information on age and origin was included as potential confounders, and odds ratios (ORs) were estimated in logistic regression models. In addition, analyses were stratified by age group to investigate potential differences across the age span.Main Results and the Role Of Chance: Adjusted results showed increased odds of receiving a first ART treatment in either the public or private sector among women with a higher educational level. Furthermore, women in employment were more likely to receive a first ART treatment in the public or private sector compared to women outside the workforce. The odds of receiving a first ART treatment increased with increasing income level. Surprisingly, income level had a greater impact on the odds of receiving a first ART treatment in the public sector than in the private sector. Women in the highest income group had 10 times higher odds of receiving a first ART treatment in the public sector (OR: 10.53 95% CI: 10.13, 10.95) compared to women in the lowest income group. Sub-analyses in different age groups showed significant associations between ART treatment and income level and labor market attachment in all age groups.Limitations, Reasons For Caution: Our study does not include non-ART treatments, as the national IVF register did not register these types of fertility treatments before 2007.Wider Implications Of the Findings: In Denmark, there is equal access to medically assisted reproduction treatment in the publicly funded healthcare system, and since there is no social inequality in the prevalence of infertility, social inequality in the use of ART treatment would not be expected as such. This paper presents findings of a second trial evaluating telephone-based motivational enhancement therapy (MET) to motivate untreated and unadjudicated men who abuse their intimate partners to explore treatment options. Participants' perceptions of how their abuse is negatively affecting them personally are a highlight of the paper. One hundred forty-one adult men were recruited through social marketing and randomly assigned to the intervention (MET) or comparison (Mail) group. The MET condition consisted of two feedback sessions guided by a personalized feedback report on participants' intimate partner violence (IPV) and substance use. The Mail condition included a mailed educational brochure on IPV and substance use. Results supported the likely effectiveness of MET in short-term reduction of IPV behavior, marijuana use, and increasing motivation for treatment seeking particularly for participants who reported more adverse consequences of IPV to themselves. Findings emphasize the importance of including a focus in interventions on IPV's impact on the abusers themselves. The study's virtual participation and success in reaching and retaining a diverse population of male abusers can contribute to transformative justice and communities looking for alternative early interventions for men of color prior to encountering the criminal justice system. Objective: To provide a comprehensive and multidimensional description and conceptualization of the experiences of Black women seeking treatment for infertility. Design: Convergent parallel mixed-methods study combining retrospective chart review data and semistructured interview data. Setting: Private infertility clinic. Patient(s): African American/Black women between 18 and 44 years of age who presented for an initial infertility evaluation with a male partner between January 2015 and September 2019 at an infertility clinic in the metropolitan Washington D.C. area. Intervention(s): None Main Outcome(s): Treatment seeking. Measure(s): Psychobiological, clinical, and sociocultural factors. Result(s): Along with the psychobiological, clinical, and sociocultural domains, we understood that Black women who sought treatment for infertility were older and overweight, had complex gynecological diagnoses, and experienced infertility for long periods of time. The delay in seeking treatment was possibly because of a low perceived risk of infertility, poor understanding of treatment options, inadequate referral patterns of primary care providers, and limited social support. Further, Black women experienced delays in seeking treatment because they attempted lifestyle-based self-interventions before considering medical interventions. Facilitators to care included psychological distress, complex gynecological medical history, and finding culturally competent providers. Conclusion(s): The study findings show that Black women in the United States are vulnerable to disparities in healthcare delivery, especially within reproductive endocrinology. Our findings highlight areas where Black women are experiencing missed opportunities for teaching, early identification, and early referrals for infertility-related concerns. Future studies should seek to reduce barriers to infertility treatment at the clinical and policy levels.

Black adults with anxiety and/or depressive disorders underutilize outpatient psychotherapy and pharmacological treatment compared to White adults. Notably, anxiety and depressive disorders tend to be chronic and Black individuals with these disorders experience greater functional impairment than White individuals. Documented racial disparities in mental health treatment initiation indicate a need for research that addresses culture-specific barriers to treatment. This review paper critically evaluates existing theoretical models of treatment seeking among Black adults to inform a novel integrated, culturally contextualized model. This model extends previous ones by incorporating factors relevant to treatment seeking among Black adults (e.g., racial identity, perceived discrimination, medical mistrust) and critically examines how these factors intersect with key factors at three levels of influence of the treatment seeking process: the individual level, the community level, and the societal level. We posit interactions among factors at the three levels of influence and how these may impact treatment seeking decisions among Black adults. • Risk factors of pandemic-onset suicidality are important to identify. • Suicide treatment barriers are attitudinal and logistic/ structural. • Past depression treatment promotes suicide treatment seeking. Researchers predict long-term increases in suicide deaths following the COVID-19 pandemic. Little is known about risk factors for suicidal ideation (SI) and suicidal attempts (SA) or treatment barriers and promoters during the pandemic. We examine these factors in a young adult sample. Analyses used a 2022 cross-sectional survey dataset (N = 1,956). Logistic regression identified factors associated with pandemic suicidality (i.e., SI, SA). Non-treatment seekers reported barriers to seeking treatment. Logistic regression identified promotive factors associated with treatment-seeking. 28.6 % of our sample developed suicidality during the pandemic, of whom 49.6 % did not seek treatment. Asian race and sexual minority status were strongly associated with increased odds of pandemic suicidality. Among SI non-treatment-seekers, barriers were primarily attitudinal (e.g., "symptoms are not serious enough for treatment"); among non-treatment-seekers with SA, barriers were mostly structural (e.g., insufficient funds). Previous depression treatment was strongly associated with increased odds of treatment-seeking. Asian American individuals were at increased risk for pandemic suicidality, which may reflect interpersonal risks related to COVID-19-related anti-Asian racism. Our findings point to a "foot-in-the-door" effect: past treatment-seeking was positively associated with future treatment-seeking. ObjectiveWe explored factors associated with reasons that women with urinary incontinence (UI) reported for not seeking treatment for their UI from a healthcare professional and whether reasons differed by race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or education.MethodsWe analyzed questionnaire data collected from 1995 to 2005 in the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation. In visits 7 to 9, we elicited reasons that women with UI reported for not seeking treatment and condensed them into: UI not bad enough, beliefs about UI causes (UI is a normal consequence of aging or childbirth), and motivational barriers (such as feeling too embarrassed). We used Generalized Estimating Equations and ordinal logistic regression to evaluate factors associated with these reported reasons and number of reasons.ResultsOf the 1,339 women reporting UI, 814 (61.0%) reported they did not seek treatment for UI. The most frequently reported reasons were as follows: "UI not bad enough" (73%), "UI is a normal part of aging" (53%), and "healthcare provider never asked" (55%). Women reporting daily UI had higher odds of reporting beliefs about UI causes (adjusted odds ratio UI 3.16, 95% CI 1.64-6.11) or motivational barriers (adjusted odds ratio UI 2.36, 95% CI 1.21-4.63) compared with women reporting less than monthly UI. We found no interactions by race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or education and UI characteristics in reasons that women reported for not seeking UI treatment.ConclusionsOver half of women who did not seek treatment for their UI reported reasons that could be addressed by public health and clinical efforts to make UI a discussion point during midlife well-women visits.

Objectives International students face increased vulnerability for mental health challenges, but underutilize counseling compared to their domestic peers. We examined beliefs regarding the causes of mental illness, known as attributions, which may impact treatment-seeking and stigma. Participants: Surveys were collected from 680 international students at U.S. universities. Methods: We sent invitations to a computer-based survey disseminated via international student email lists. The survey explored mental health attributions for depression, alcohol use disorder, and schizophrenia. Results: Attributions differed significantly by disorder. Depression and alcohol use were attributed to social stress and perceived as controllable and influenced by personal weakness and lifestyle choices. Schizophrenia was often attributed to hereditary/biological causes. Differences also emerged based on the participants' acculturation, region of origin, and religiosity. Conclusions: Attributions influence perceptions of mental illness and may lead to stigma. Providers should incorporate discussions of attribution in student outreach and counseling to address potential impacts on care-seeking. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective Untreated mental health (MH) concerns have significant implications for college students. This study examined the efficacy of a video contact intervention targeting students' intentions to seek counseling. Participants: One-hundred and sixty-three college students (Mage = 21.05, SD = 2.20) from a Mid-Atlantic university participated. The sample was predominantly female (74%). Method: Students were randomly assigned to view a student-targeted contact video (ie, clips from college students who share their mental health experiences), a MH comparison contact video, or a non-MH comparison video. Intentions to seek counseling and psychological distress were measured pretest and post-test. Results: Intentions to seek counseling significantly increased from pretest to post-test in the student-targeted contact video condition (F[1, 156] = 22.75, p <.001, partial η2 =.13), but not in the comparison conditions. Further, this effect was only observed among participants who reported preexisting psychological distress (F[1, 153] = 28.00, p <.001, partial η2 =.16). Conclusions: This study provides initial support for the utility of a student-targeted contact intervention video for increasing help-seeking intentions among those reporting current psychological distress. Background: Aging is a complex and universal life process. Treatment seeking behaviour in elderly is affected by socioeconomic factors and by affordability, availability and accessibility of healthcare. Objectives: To study treatment-seeking behaviour of the study subjects. To compare treatment seeking behaviour among rural and urban study subjects. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted in the Kanpur district. Selection of villages in rural and mohallas in urban areas was done using a multistage random sampling technique. A total of 600 subjects were studied, including 400 from urban areas and 200 from rural areas. Elderly persons>60 years of age, both males and females were included in the study. Results: Overall, out of 600 study subjects, 59.8% were taking treatment in rural areas and in urban areas 77.6% were taking treatment. In urban areas, more females availed treatment compared to rural areas. Majority of study subjects (56.5%) sought treatment from a government hospital. Only 36% subjects had health insurance. Conclusion: In Urban areas more subjects availed treatment as compared to rural areas. Majority of subjects sought treatment from government health facilities. The treatment gap for mental disorders remains a challenge worldwide. Identifying reasons for nontreatment may contribute to reducing this gap. To evaluate sociodemographic and clinical factors associated with use and barriers to treatment in Portugal. Data from the 2009 National Mental Health Survey were used. Participants reported 12-month treatment and reasons for nontreatment. Logistic regression models analysed the association between sociodemographic (education; employment; income; marital status) and clinical variables (mental disorder diagnosis; disability) with treatment and type of barriers (low perceived need; structural; attitudinal). The majority of participants with a mental disorder was not treated. Treatment was more common among participants with mood disorders (OR = 4.19; 95% CI: 2.72–6.46), and disability (OR = 2.43; 95% CI: 1.33–4.46), and less common among single participants (OR = 0.38; 95% CI: 0.20–0.70) and those with basic/secondary education (OR = 0.42; 95% CI: 0.24–0.73). Attitudinal barriers were more likely among participants with none/primary (OR = 2.90; 95% CI: 1.42–5.90) and basic/secondary education (OR = 1.70; 95% CI: 1.01–2.85), and less likely among those with substance use disorders (OR = 0.27; 95% CI: 0.10–0.70). Low perceived need was higher among single people (OR = 1.77; 95% CI: 1.01–3.08), and lower among those with anxiety (OR = 0.50; 95% CI: 0.28–0.90) and mood disorders (OR = 0.16; 95% CI: 0.09–0.30). Unemployed participants had higher odds of reporting structural barriers (OR = 3.76; 95% CI: 1.29–10.92). Abstract Background Losing a child to death is one of the most stressful life events experienced in adulthood. The aim of the current study is to investigate parental risk of seeking treatment for major depression disorders (MDD) after a child’s death and to explore whether such connection may operate differentially by parents’ prior medical condition. Methods We studied a retrospective cohort of 7245 parents (2987 mothers and 4258 fathers) identified in the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan (NHIRD) who had lost a child with age between 1 and 12 years. For comparison, the parents of 1:4 birth year- and gender-matched non-deceased children were retrieved (16,512 mothers and 17,753 fathers). Gender-specific Cox regression analyses were performed to estimate risk. Results Nearly 5.0% and 2.4% of bereaved mothers and fathers sought treatment for MDD within three years after a child’s death, significantly higher than 0.8% and 0.5% in the non-bereaved parents. With covariate adjustment, the hazard ratio (HR) for maternal and paternal seeking treatment for MDD was estimated 4.71 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 3.35–6.64) and 1.93 (95% CI: 1.27–2.95), respectively. The increased risk of MDD varied by prior disease history; specifically, the increased risk of seeking treatment for MDD was especially prominent for those without chronic physical condition (CPC) (e.g., mothers with CPC: aHR = 2.38, 95% CI: 1.56–3.65 vs. no CPC: aHR = 9.55, 95% CI: 6.17–14.79). Conclusions After the death of a child, parental elevated risk of MDD was especially prominent for the women and those without prior medical condition. Effective strategies addressing bereavement may require family-based, integrated physical and mental healthcare and even extended counseling service.

This study aimed to identify alcohol use disorder (AUD) criteria that better characterized those who seek treatment and those who recover on their own. We gathered data from help-seeking (HS) patients in an alcohol unit and compared them with self-achieved remission (SAR) patients. The best criteria to predict HS were psychological problems due to use, physical problems due to use, repeated attempts or desire to stop using, and not being able to stop drinking. The best criteria to predict SAR were tolerance, craving, hazardous use, much time spent, larger/longer use than intended, and role impairment. The ageing of population and simultaneous increase in adult out-migration are two contemporary demographic developments that are occurring in many developing countries. Due to inadequate formal care support and social security system, older parents from these countries may experience diminution in wellbeing when their adult children migrate. This study investigates the impact of adult out-migration on various health dimensions of left-behind older parents and their treatment seeking behaviour in Indian context. We utilized survey data from the Building a Knowledge Base on Population Ageing in India (BKPAI). Analysis was restricted to a representative sample of 9263 older adults (60+), who had at least one biological child. Employing OLS and IV regression models, the impact of adult out-migration on physical and psychological health outcomes of older adults were investigated. Using Heckman Probit model, we further investigated the impacts of migration on treatment seeking behaviour of older adults. Findings suggest that the migration of adult children positively influences older individual's subjective health (2SLS β = 0.095, p ≤ 0.05), functional ability to perform instrumental activities (2SLS β = 0.879, p ≤ 0.001) and cognitive ability (2SLS β = 0.208, p ≤ 0.05). At the same time, prevalence of chronic morbidity and depressive symptoms were found to be significantly higher among the older parents with migrant children. Findings also reveal a negative effect of migration on chronic disease related treatment seeking (β = -0.09, p ≤ 0.05), which indicates that older individuals with migrant children were less likely to receive medical and other care facilities than older persons without migrating children if they suffer from chronic diseases. Our study provides evidence that absence of adult children due to migration has both positive and negative health impacts on the older parents left behind. Background: A minority of all with alcohol use disorders seek treatment. In Denmark, a media campaign, "RESPEKT," has been broadcast nationwide since 2015. The campaign is unique from an international perspective and aims to increase treatment-seeking. Similar interventions have, up until now, not been scientifically evaluated. Aim: To investigate campaign awareness, understanding, attitudes, and information-seeking pre- and post the campaign period. Also, associations to demographic factors and year of campaign will be investigated. Method: Study design: Repeated cross-sectional study Participants: Adults aged 30–70 years, in total n = 9169. Data: Pre- and post the campaign period between 2017 and 2020, an online questionnaire was administered by a market research company. The questionnaire covered demographic data, campaign awareness, understanding, attitudes, and information-seeking about treatment for alcohol use disorders. In addition, complete-case logistic regression was performed to model dichotomous outcomes, and odds ratios were calculated. Results: Campaign awareness varied between 8 and 40% over the different years. Understanding of the main message was high and received higher endorsements over the study period. A majority expressed positive attitudes toward the campaign and support for the main message regarding free treatment. However, very few self-reported seeking information about AUD treatment. Female sex was associated with higher awareness of the campaign, higher understanding and more positive attitudes toward the campaign. Conclusion: The campaign evoked positive attitudes and had an impact on increasing knowledge and changing attitudes. However, no effect on self-reported information seeking about treatment was found. Men are less likely than women to seek out mental health treatment, despite men also having mental health struggles. We examined typologies of men's reasons for not seeking treatment even though they perceived a need for treatment. We conducted a latent class analysis using a U.S. national sample of 836 men who specifically indicated a need for mental health services, but did not seek treatment from the National Study on Drug Use and Health. We identified three distinct types of men and their unique rationales for not seeking treatment: positive attitudes class, perceived high behavioral control class, and negative attitudes class. Unique strategies to market clinical services to each of the various needs and concerns of these types of men may prove more beneficial than a generic outreach approach. Methods: The data of 536 PE patients, including those who presented with the complaint of PE (group 1) and those presenting with other complaints who were diagnosed with PE (group 2) as a result of ejaculatory function inquiry using estimated intravaginal ejaculation latency time (IELT) and Premature Ejaculation Diagnostic Tool (PEDT), were retrospectively evaluated. Age, PE type, comorbidities, recommended treatments, and treatment acceptance status of all patients were recorded. These characteristics were compared for each group. Results: Among all the patients, those who presented with PE complaints constituted 22.4%. Among the patients with both PE and ED, 98.1% applied with ED complaint and only 1.9% with PE complaint. The percentage of patients with one comorbidity was significantly higher in group 2 (p = 0.032). 90.1% of all patients and 88.5% of patients in group 2 accepted the recommended treatment for PE. The mean age and comorbidities were significantly higher in patients that refused the treatment. The most common reason for treatment refusal was the patients' lack of expectation for treatment. Conclusions: This study shows that men more frequently tend to seek treatment for ED than PE, and treatment acceptance rate may be higher when the patients with PE complaints who don’t seek treatment are reached through ejaculatory function inquiry. The presence of comorbidities negatively affects the treatment expectation and acceptance as well as treatment seeking behavior of men with PE.

Recent studies have shown that alcohol and drug use in Turkey is rising year on year. In order to prevent and treat substance use disorder (SUD), many Alcohol and Drug Research, Treatment and Training Centres (AMATEM) have been established in Turkey. The purpose of this study was to investigate the pathway to care of patients who presented at AMATEM. A total 235 patients with SUD between16-69 age groups who presented at AMATEMs in 2017 were included in this study. A sociodemographic form and a structured self-report questionnaire consisting of 36 items assessing the pathways of care were given to all the patients. Data were analysed with descriptive statistics using SPSS software. The majority of the patients included in the study were single (55%) and male (96%). Patients mostly had a secondary school level of education (51%) and social security (65%). The majority of the patients stated that they used more than one substance (44%), opiates (20%) or alcohol (18%). This is the first study evaluating the pathway of care in patients with SUD in Turkey. It was observed that a significant majority of patients with SUD presented to AMATEMs and patients who applied to different health institutions stated that they were mostly informed about SUD and AMATEM. There were also patients with negative attitudes towards AMATEMs and non-medical treatment seeking behavior other than AMATEM. Despite a well-documented global burden of disease attributable to alcohol use disorder (AUD), treatment seeking rates remain low. In this qualitative literature review, we address treatment seeking for AUD from a host of perspectives and summarize the literature on key factors. First, we summarize the rates of alcohol treatment seeking across various epidemiological surveys, spanning decades. Second, we discuss the definition of treatment seeking and 'what' is typically considered formal treatment. Third, we consider timing and discuss 'when' individuals are most likely to seek treatment. Fourth, we review the literature on 'who' is most likely to seek treatment, including demographic and clinical correlates. Fifth, we address the critical question of 'why' so few people receive clinical services for AUD, relative to the number of individuals affected by the disorder, and review barriers to treatment seeking at the treatment- and person-levels of analysis. Finally, we identify opportunities to improve treatment seeking rates by focusing on tangible points of intervention. Specifically, we recommend a host of adaptations to models of care including efforts to make treatment more appealing across stages of AUD severity, accept a range of health-enhancing drinking goals as opposed to an abstinence-only model, educate providers and consumers about evidence-based behavioral and pharmacological treatments, and incentivize the delivery of evidence-based services.
