Le Grand Tour est l’un des éléments du système éducatif des nobles et des magnats de la République des Deux Nations. Avant le voyage, les parents rédigent des instructions pour leurs fils et les précepteurs. Ces instructions contiennent des conseils sur les lieux à visiter, notamment la cour française installée à Versailles, pour y apprendre l’étiquette, les bonnes manières, la danse, faire des connaissances, assister à des bals, à des audiences et à d’autres événements. La seconde vise à examiner dans quelle mesure ces recommandations ont été mises en pratique, en analysant les extraits de deux journaux de voyage. Le premier document est particulièrement intéressant car contemporain de l’installation de la cour française à Versailles, mais a été écrit par un précepteur, Jan Michał Kossowicz. Le second journal de voyage est rédigé directement par un jeune noble, Józef Jerzy Hylzen, dans les années 1750. The Grand Tour was part of the education of nobles and magnates in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Before the journey, parents wrote instructions for their sons and their tutors. These instructions included advice on places to visit. One of these was the French court at Versailles. Parents would point out that this was where their offspring should learn etiquette, manners, dancing, make new acquaintances, attend balls, audiences and other events. The article is divided into two parts. The first studies parents’ and tutors’ instructions and the information they contain about Versailles. The second part examines the degree to which this advice was followed, with an analysis of excerpts from two travel journals. The first of these is interesting because it was written by a tutor, Jan Michał Kossowicz, shortly after Louis XIV had moved his court to Versailles. The second was penned by a young nobleman, Józef Jerzy Hylzen, in the 1750s and contains extremely detailed descriptions of the court ceremonial, both secular and religious.

IE TCD MS 6211 is one of 5 sketchbooks kept by John Synge during his early 19th-century European travels. Where the works are finished they are sepia wash depictions of buildings in landscapes, sometimes with figures, usually dated. The titles are those given by the author. The journal kept by the author during his journey is MS 6205. The other 4 sketchbooks can be found at IE TCD MS 6207-62010. The work in this book was done at the same time and the same location as that in MS 6210, i.e. September 1814 in Italy, and in some instances served as the preparatory work for some of the more finished images in that sketchbook. This item is part of the collection of material brought together by Edward Stephens (1888-1955) for his projected biography of his uncle John Millington Synge.John Synge (1788-1845) was grandfather of the playwright John Millington Synge; he was known as 'Pestalozzi John' due to his enthusiasm for the teachings of Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi (1746-1827, Swiss educator). IE TCD MS 5103 is a paperback notebook kept by Dr. Thomas Arnold. Manuscript note on outside of front cover reads: ‘1827- 8’. Manuscript note on inside of front cover reads: ‘Rome- May 1st 1827. T. Arnold. Laleham’. Six loose pieces of paper inserted are numbered 30a, 44a, 60a, 78a, 106a, 122a. Dated 1 May 1827- 5 January 1828; comprising 144 pages. Dr. Arnold's journal is addressed to his "Dearest Mary and all our little darlings" and begins in Rome when he has started to make his way back to Laleham, England after nine weeks away from home. He is not interested in famous sculptures or masterpieces they ‘are utterly lost on me’. Instead, he keeps a detailed record of the natural beauty of the trees, flowers and scenery of Italy and Switzerland. According to Dr. Arnold ‘it is not a figure of speech but a literal truth to say that the whole country [Italy] is a garden’. He kept lists of his expenses and the names and locations of all the inns he stayed in accompanied by his own personal comments, some being very unfavourable. The journal consists mostly of Dr. Arnold’s notes on his European trip but also three trips in England; Fledborough, Oxford and Devonshire. While staying at Fledborough, Nottinghamshire he visits an old friend of his who lives near the woods and has a number of curious animals including ‘five or six kangaroos…a Tartarian [North Aisian] roebuck, two or three Axis, a fine black swan, a Coati [a Brazilian aardvark], a mongoose and golden pheasants’. IE TCD MS 3820 is a hardback notebook kept by Charles Rolleston, dated 26 June 1828- March 1829, and comprising 316 pages. Manuscript note on page ii reads ‘Journal dedicated by permission to Mrs. Charles Rolleston Ireland’. Second manuscript dedication on page iv reads ‘As a mark of his obedience to her wishes, and as a small tribute of affection towards her the following leaves are dedicated to Mrs. Charles Rolleston by her affectionate son – Charles Rolleston’. Charles Rolleston is a young man when he begins his journey from Dublin through England and around Europe, as he writes on the 2nd November 1828 ‘I am this day of age’. Rolleston freely gives his opinions, friendly or scathing, concerning people, places and customs. He admits that painting, sculpture and other artistic works are not of major interest to him. Instead it is natural beauty such as the Jardin des Plantes (France), Mer de Glace (Switzerland), Glacier de Bossons (Switzerland), Mount Vesuvius (Italy) and Italian women that interest him. He attends the opera and ballet throughout France and Italy witnessing such talents as the famous actor Macready (William Charles 1793- 1873) and the bass opera singer Lablache (Luigi 1794- 1858). Rolleston notes how Catholic ornaments, paintings and statues are placed along the roadsides of Italy to watch over travellers. He also gives his opinion on the Roman Catholic Church and its structure especially in Rome. While in Rome he witnesses the death of a cardinal infamous for his gluttony for eating ‘370 oysters amid an immensity of ice so that I rather think it was wisely ordained to give him a long eternity to digest them’. When Pope Leo XII dies ‘a man regretted by but few, a man whose former life was spent in all the vices, and the letter part of it in all the luxuries…he was hated by the Romans’. IE TCD MS 5093 is a paperback notebook containing two different hands, those of Sir Edward O’Brien and his wife Charlotte; it is dated 26 August- December 1816, and comprises 47 folios. Charlotte (married 1799; née Smith, daughter of William Smith, Cahirmoyle in Co. Limerick) begins this journal on 26 August 1816 when they leave Dover, England and arrive in Calais, France. The journal is then continued by Sir Edward after he leaves his family in Calais with some acquaintances ‘to visit Dunkirk, Bruges, Ostend and Brussels’. Sir Edward notes the differences between French and English society, such as the price of goods in markets, cultivation and housekeeping practices. He pays a visit to the site of the Battle of Waterloo visiting the Château d’Hougoumont, walking La Belle Alliance and reflecting that ‘the bones of forty thousand gallant soldiers lie interred in this famous field’. Sir Edward continues on through Belgium visiting Flanders, Bruges and finally returning to his family in Boulogne-sur-Mer on 17 September 1816. Accompanied by his family and with his wife now keeping the journal they travel through Paris to Orleans where they settle for 3 months. Sir Edward’s wife is particular interested in how French society works, the people’s manners and their dress. Paperback notebook, IE TCD MS 7272. Manuscript note on front cover reads ‘Palermo & ItalySwitzerland etc. 1836- 1837’. Journal entry written on rectos with expenses listed on versos. Journal runs from 1 July 1836 - 19 July 1837; 78 folios. Clements begins his journal in Palermo in July 1836. His journey takes him from Sicily up the west coast of Italy where he stops at, amongst others, Naples and Leghorn (Livorno). Clements then crosses Italy to visit Padua and Venice on the north east coast, continuing further north to Lake Como, on to Switzerland and through France to Paris. His final destination is Portsmouth which he reaches just over a year after he set out from Sicily. He comments on the beautiful works of art, buildings and sights of Italy, especially in Venice. He visits the ‘Gallery of the Belli Arti’(Accademia Reale di Belle Artii) and ‘The Frari’ (Basilica di Santi Mana Gloriosa deiFrari) which houses the Monument of (Antonio) Canova. Clements remarks that the monument is said to hold Canova’s heart ‘his right hand is in a porphory (a type of volcanic rock) urn in the Gallery delle belle Arti [sic], his left hand is in Rome, and the rest of his body is God knows where’. He also visits the Palace of St. Mark and the Island of Murano, famous for its glass works. His travels to Switzerland bring him in contact with sights of natural beauty such as the landscape around Sion and the lakes, mountains and Falls of Geissbach. Clements also makes more personal and insightful comments. While in Naples in September 1836 he was anxious to leave as he was ‘mightily devoured by muskittoss [sic]’ and also how a hotel in Bern, Switzerland was rumoured to have ‘beds with spring mattresses’. IE TCD MS 2261/2, a paperback notebook bearing a manuscript note on front cover that reads ‘Notes on Italian Literature and Travelling Diary by Quin’. From the 19th century; comprising 32 folios in English and French. The notebook has been divided into headed sections by Quin [perhaps Henry George Quin?]. It deals with such topics as Italian literature, the history of Venice, and some travel notes from Vienna, Constantinople, Egypt, and Greece. Folios 1-7--‘Sketch of Italian Literature by Quin’ mentioning such names as Dante (Alighieri; 1265- 1321), Petrarch (Francesco; 1304- 1374), Giovanni Boccaccio (1313- 1375), the Medici family, Ariosto (Ludovico; 1474- 1533), Machiavelli (Niccolo di Bernardo dei; 1469- 1527). Paperback notebook, IE TCD MS 7273. Manuscript note on inside front cover reads ‘H. J. Clements June 19 1833 Toulouse’. The title given to the journal by the author is as follows ‘Journal of a journey from Toulouse to Paris passing by Lyons’. Journal runs inconsistently from 19 June 1833- 13 August 1837; 70 pages (not all used). Clements was 13 years of age when he began writing in the journal. He and his family were travelling back to Ashfield, Co. Cavan, Ireland, after nearly five years away. The journal entries are very brief and mainly consisting of names of towns passed, the weather and minor personal details. Their journey takes them from Toulouse to the south coast of France, Narbonne, Montpellier and then eastwards. While in Nîmes, Clements visited a natural history museum and ‘saw a stuffed cameleopard [sic]’ (a giraffe). The family reached Paris in July 1833 and visited places such as Franconi’s Cirque, the Louvre and ‘Paire la Chaise [sic]’ (Père Lachaise cemetery). Next they travelled to London, attending Astley’s theatre and hearing Maria Malibran (1808-1836) sing. The journal entries end on 12 September 1833 in Exeter and begin again on 20 December 1836 with the family back living in Ashfield, Co. Cavan, Ireland. IE TCD MS 2261/1, a hardback travel diary of Henry George Quin from 1 October 1785 to 30 January 1786. The journal was conserved, preserving the original rag woven paper where possible, and given new boards. Comprises 180 folios. Henry Quin begins his journal in Geneva on top of the Glacier des Bossons (Switzerland). He travels through Switzerland and into Italy spending a large portion of his time in Milan, Florence and Rome. Quin is very interested in art spending up to five days at the Gallery (Accademia di Belle Arti) in Florence and re-visiting the Vatican and the Sistine Chapel numerous times while in Rome. He comments on the different accents to be heard in the various Italian towns, the appearance of the ordinary people and of the upper classes and the variety of flavours found in food ‘The sausages of Bologna have a peculiar flavour of garlick [sic] or scallions’. When in Rome the city is hit with very heavy rains and Quin writes how the Tiber has overflowed submerging the Pantheon and the surrounding area. IE TCD MS 11359 is a paperback notebook kept by Charles Manners in 1836, with manuscript diary entries and 5 printed articles inserted. 181 pages (original pagination). Manners was a diplomat in Sweden who left Göteborg in May 1836 for Ireland. He was accompanied by his wife, daughter Alexandra, son Fredric, and dog Dash. He passed through Denmark, and Germany and stopped in London. In his notes he gives details of London, its parks, museums and people. He discusses his plans to introduce a system of railroads in Ireland, ways to improve the Irish way of life, and a court case that he is involved with. Manners travelled to Birmingham, Manchester and on to Dublin, where he arrived in August 1836 and stayed in The Gresham Hotel. He gives details of the city, its population, the poverty and the high levels of ‘beggary [sic]’. He left Dublin by ‘flyboat [sic]’ and travelled to Edenderry to visit his ‘King’s County tenants’. He travelled around the countryside visiting counties Longford, Roscommon, Leitrim, Kilkenny and Waterford commenting on the scenery, accommodation and people. First 6 folios consist of journal entry on one side and expenses lists on the other.Clements leaves London on 20th September 1791. By carriage his journey takes him from Arras in the north of France to Antibes on the southeast coast. Clements notes the exchange rate at the time as ’27 livres for each Guinea at Calais’ and each Louis is worth 29 shillings. The few social comments he makes centre around the unhappiness and the poverty felt by the people under ‘the present situation of the kingdom’. Hardback journal kept by Dr. Richard Pococke, archdeacon of Dublin, Bishop of Ossory (1756-65) and Meath (1765) and the person credited with discovering Chamonix in 1741. Not every folio is written on and there are gaps of up to 3 folios between entries. Some minor additions and corrections have been made by a second hand. Dr. Pococke’s journal has been studied and written about on numerous occasions, such as Dr. George T. Stokes, Pococke's tour in Ireland in 1752 (Dublin and London: 1892), Dr. John McVeigh, Richard Pococke's Irish tours (Blackrock: 1995) and the County Clare extracts were republished by Brian Ó Dálaigh, The stranger's gaze: travels in County Clare 1534-1950 (Ennis: 1998). 22 June 1752- 27 August 1753; 105 foliosPococke sets off north from Dublin and gradually circumnavigates the island of Ireland. While travelling he visits friends and associates, comments on the architecture and economy of towns, preaches in a number of churches and makes note of traditions still held by the local people. An island off Mayo called Ennis Clory ‘is a great burial place, of this island they [the local people] say that no rat or mouse will live in it, & go so far as to affirm, that if they bring the earth & shake it in a reck [sic] of corn, none of these vermin will touch it’. Pococke is interested in language and he notes Irish words, sayings and place names phonetically; ‘Usquebaugh’ (uisce beithe: whiskey) and ‘Cunnehmarah’ (Connemara, Co. Galway). R.W.G. Hingston’s unbound manuscript journal. Manuscript title on front page reads ‘R.W.G. Hingston. Journal of Oxford University Expedition to Greenland 1928’. The expedition left England on 1 May and after over a month at sea they arrive in Godthaab Harbour (Greenland) on 14 June. They spend two months travelling around the island collecting botanical and entomological specimens, finally departing on 5 August. The journal includes a colour map of the area surrounding Godthaab Harbour (Greenland). It also includes two typescript letters from Hingston to a Major Austin and the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, seeking scientific equipment for the expedition. 31 March-17 August 1928 ; 71 folios.

R.W.G. Hingston’s paperback journal. Typescript title on the front cover reads ‘Diary. East Africa. 1914’. Hingston writes this journal while on military duty with the first entry beginning in Abbottabad (Pakistan). He travels between Pakistan (Abbottabad, Rawalpindi, Karachi), India (Bombay), Tanzania (Tanga formerly German East Africa), Kenya (Mombasa, Nairobi), Egypt (Port Said, Suez), France (Marseilles) and back to India. Hingston describes and sketches military operations between the British and the Germans in Tanga in ‘accordance with my personal observations’. Later manuscript additions and corrections made. 16 September 1914- 22 February 1915 ; 148 pages.

R.W.G. Hingston’s unbound manuscript journal. Manuscript title on front page reads ‘Mission to Africa on Behalf of Society for the Preservation of the Empire Fauna. R.W.G. Hingston’. The journal includes a number of letters from the Society for the Preservation of the Empire Fauna regarding the expedition. The expedition leaves England on 24 May. They stop at Madeira Island and continue on to Cape Town (South Africa) arriving 9 June. They travel to Bechuanaland (Botswana), North and South Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), Mozambique, Nyasaland (Malawi), Tanganyika, Kenya, Uganda and Egypt. They leave Africa on 27 August and sail into South Hampton on 13 September. The journal includes typescript copies of interviews and discussions about national parks, legal and illegal gaming in Africa, a newspaper article from The Times entitled ‘The Serengeti Game Park’ 1 July 1933 and a letter from Mr. Hamilton of Kruger National Park (South Africa) 12 February 1932. 13 May 1930- 1 July 1933 ; 118 folios.

R.W.G. Hingston’s hardback journal. Typescript title on front cover reads ‘Mount Everest. Note Book. 1924’. Journal starts in Basrah (Basra, Iraq) on 15 February and ends 26 July at 5000 feet in Gantok (Gangtok, India). Hingston charts his travels through India, China and Tibet finally settling in Rangbuk (Tibet) where the expedition’s first base camp was set up. The expedition begins the ascent of Mount Everest, making their Camp III at 21,000 feet. After 8 days Hingston writes ‘There can be no doubt; the worst has happened. Not a sign of Mallory and Irvine’. The expedition descends Mount Everest, evacuating each camp as they go and gradually over 36 days make their way back to India. 26 July 1924 ; 49 folios. R.W.G. Hingston’s paperback journal. Manuscript note on inside of front cover reads ‘RWG Hingston. Private Journal. From 17 October 1916 to 18 October 1917’. This journal is a continuation of IE TCD MS 10516. Hingston writes this journal while on military duty in Iraq. He travels from Nasiriyah to Basra and takes note of all natural history around him including Persian gazelles, wild geese, fish, ants, floods, river and altitude levels. From Basra Hingston travels along the River Tigris through Kut El Amara, Ctesiphon, Baghdad, Hinaidi and Karrada where the army made their summer camp. In September 1917 Hingston continued travelling through Fallujah, Medhij [sic] to Ramadi where a large scale fighting against the Turks and Arabs took place. Hingston describes the fighting and includes maps and sketches of military manoeuvres. 17 October 1916-18 October 1917 ; 139 folios. Continued by IE TCD MS 10518.

Hingston writes this journal while on military duty in Iraq. He spent some time in hospital in Ramadi due to an injury but after a month he rejoins his regiment in Fallujah. Hingston hears of the death of General Frederick Stanley Maude (24 June 1864- 18 November 1917); ‘It is a sad loss, sad that he should not have lived to see the completion of his victories’. Hingston does not make another entry for over 6 months. He is then on his way to Bombay recovering from mental depression called ‘Basra head’ plus an attack of dysentery and jaundice. The journal ends with Hingston’s reflections on his 2 years service in Mesopotamia (Iraq). 16 November 1917-May 1918 ; 26 folios.

This journal is a continuation of IE TCD MS 10515. Hingston writes this journal while on military duty with the first entry beginning in Nasiriyah (Iraq). He travels around the River Euphrates basin stopping at Basra, Shatt-al-Arab, Kurna (Qurnah), Chahbaish and Lake Hammar. Hingston describes and sketches the natural history of this region including the animals, insects, landscape and meteorological phenomena. He includes maps and military manoeuvres undertaken by the army and notes the discovery of pottery shards in the city of Ur (Iraq). 9 July-12 October 1916 ; 93 folios. Continued by IE TCD MS 10517.

Typescript title on front page reads ‘Private Journal of Captain R.W.G. Hingston, Indian Medical Service, while Surgeon and Naturalist with the Indo-Russian Triangulation Expedition’.
