The tourist trade in Turkey has been experiencing a rapid growth with earnings increasing from $1,482 million in 1985 to $4,957 million in 1995. During 1995 7.7 million people visited Turkey of these around 21.4% came from Germany with 9.5% coming from the United Kingdom. In 1991 only 30.8% of visitors arrived by air but this had risen to 66.8% by 1995. The most popular months for tourists to visit Turkey are July, August and September many of them taking low-cost package holidays.

Turkey remains a popular holdiay destination for British tourists because of its cultural attractions, good weather and beaches, as well as price. Terrorist activity has not caused visitor numbers to fall. The number of British and Irish holidaymakers to Turkey is expected to increase to 800,000 in 1995, following a 28% growth in 1994 to 570,000 over 1993. Turkey remains popular with repeat visitors as well as first-time travelers. The Turkish tourist industry is examined, including focus on growth restrictions, Istanbul and package tours.
