This study explores the shift from normal tourism to sustainable tourism, devoting particular attention to hotels. The reason for this attention is connected to the high levels of pollution created by hotels that may be reduced by adopting a strong sustainable orientation. In reality, even though hotels are very crucial in the pursuit for sustainability, the attention to identify how they should intervene is not sufficient. It is true that there are some contributions (Brown, 1996; Butler,2008)that have been studied and have presented interesting sets of indicators (environmental, economic, socio-cultural),but they are targeted mainly to buildings in general and have been adapted, sometimes, to big hotels. This study focuses on small hotels in an attempt to verify if there are examples of excellence in adopting sustainable behaviors. Additionally, the study takes into account the literature contribution and existing examples in order to build a model that may help small hotels to be sustainable. Croatian tourist destinations are present in the networked international tourist market and should adjust to such market conditions by means of improving the competitiveness of their own tourist offer. An important precondition for such offer improvement is an efficient system of management of a specific tourist destination, i.e. destination management. This is particularly important in uniting partial interests of destination's multiple stakeholders, in order to create an integral tourist product for a specific destination. Implementation of the destination management principles in Croatia is at an insufficient level of development. In this study, the authors wish to emphasise the importance of an efficient and functional destination management for the development of tourism competitiveness in Croatian destinations. They, therefore, propose that it is necessary to start the process of definition and implementation of the DMO model in Croatian tourism and to reduce the existing gaps in the competitiveness of the tourist offer. This study should stimulate the Croatian scientific and professional public to further consider the need for development of the model of tourist destination management development. Vazan preduvjet za ovo unapredenje je ucinkovit sustav menadzmenta specificne turisticke destinacije. Ovo je posebno znacajno u ujedinjavanju parcijalnih interesa visestrukih dionika--interesnih skupina u destinaciji, kako bi se kreirao integralni turisticki proizvod. Implementacija principa turisticke destinacije u Hrvatskoj je na nedovoljnom stupnju razvoja. U ovom radu, autori zele naglasiti znacaj efikasnog i funkcionalnog destinacijskog menadzmenta za razvoj konkurentnosti hrvatskih destinacija. Stoga smatraju da je nuzno pokrenuti process definicije i implementacije modela destinacijskog menadzmenta u hrvatskom turizmu te smanjiti postojece zaostatke u konkurentnosti turisticke ponude. This article reports on an ongoing project in the harbour town of Cobb, Co Cork, Ireland. In recent years, this town has been reimagined as a site for the consumption of selected heritage stories and much emphasis has been placed on its marketing as a heritage tourist end-destination. A 'heritage signature' based on the localisation of lreland's wider emigrant experience runs central to the organisation of Cobh as a tourist space. The construction of this heritage tourism identity is considered here, as is the way in which 'tourist product' is marketed in the town. It is found that tourist product is built on a very specific imagining of place and that the town's history as it relates to its location on a transatlantic axis is elevated above all other histories.

The National Film Board's 1946 production Holiday at School was the culmination of a decade's work in university extension education by Donald Roy Cameron, the director of the Banff School of Fine Arts. Established by the University of Alberta in 1933 and shaped by Cameron's vision from 1936 to 1966, the Banff School promoted Canadian nation-building through the arts and contributed to the construction of Banff as a prime tourism destination and wilderness recreation park. The strategy was not unlike the way Canadian cultural policy in the mid-twentieth century approached national development through tourism in the national parks and through film-making by the National Film Board. All three institutions--the National Film Board, the Banff School of Fine Arts, and Banff National Park--constructed Banff as a symbolic national landscape for leisure and tourism consumption. The film Holiday at School was thus produced at the intersection of these institutions participating in the construction of citizenship in Canada after the Second World War: holidays at the Banff School became a site for the expression of postwar ideals of liberal democratic citizenship that encompassed public education, leisure consumerism, and Canadian nationalism.

Most nature-based tourism involves private companies in public protected areas. Most of these operate under a simple concession permit, but more complex partnerships are being introduced. Visitor infrastructure, and some tours, are also provided directly by public agencies on public land. Tourism products, generally private, can also operate very successfully as commercial ventures in private protected areas. This form of partnership has a long history in Europe, and is used widely in Subsaharan Africa and South and Central America, and increasingly in North America. It has been little used to date in Australia or Asia, although there are one or two outstanding examples. Crowding is increasing in public protected areas in these countries, however, and commercial tours are coming into increasing competition with private recreational users, non-profit groups and public tours. Private tour operators will therefore need to establish additional protected areas, in partnership either with private landholders, or public land management agencies such as state forests.
