Abstract

The puma (Puma concolor Linnaeus, 1771) is the top predator with the widest distribution in America. Since the establishment of European settlers on the American continent, puma populations have experienced significant contractions and reductions in their original distribution. In Argentina, the management of the conflict between humans and pumas (direct persecution and habitat modification) focused on reduction or elimination methods, leading to a drastic contraction, even total eradication, of puma populations as seen in Patagonia and the eastern part of the country. Despite the lack of knowledge about puma population demographic trends, there are taxonomic issues that remain controversial and need to be resolved to implement appropriate management and conservation measures. Therefore, the aim of this study was to genetically characterize puma populations in the central-southern region of Argentina using two mitochondrial markers, evaluate their demographic history, compare our results at a macro-regional level, and discuss our findings in a conservation and management context. A total of 203 individuals were used, and a fragment of the control region and another of ND5 were sequenced. The genetic variability obtained was moderate. Substitution rates for each locus and the tMRCA were calculated from calibrated trees. In a concatenated tree, two main phylogenetic clades were identified (posterior probability = 1), although a reciprocal monophyly was not observed, with a divergence time of 228 thousand years and a 95% CI [117-363 thousand years]. When evaluating population structuring, three genetic clusters were found, one characteristic of the Patagonian region and the others in the central part of the country. Calculating the ФST values for pairs resulted in significant structuring between Patagonia and the rest of the populations, suggesting the arid diagonal as a possible barrier to gene flow. When evaluating the demographic history, neutrality tests would support a recent expansion in Patagonia. These findings are crucial in defining two distinct Management Units (MUs) in the southern part of puma distribution and providing valuable information for management and conservation measures for the species. Abstract

The guanaco (Lama guanicoe (Muller, 1776)) is a monomorphic polygynous mammal whose adult sex ratio is expected to be balanced or biased towards females. Remarkably male-biased sex ratios of adult guanacos are often estimated from road surveys. We analyzed the distribution of guanaco social groups recorded during road surveys in Patagonia, Argentina, to test the hypothesis that group assignation based upon behavioral traits is not unequivocal and can be biased by survey factors. Guanacos are organized into three social units (family groups, male groups, and solitary males) that are identified by their grouping behaviour. We recorded 992 guanaco groups, and estimated an adult sex ratio of 3.2 males/female. We used generalized additive models to test the null hypothesis that the probability of recording a group as a family group was constant. Alternatively, this probability could decrease when juvenile abundance and (or) detectability was low. The most parsimonious model showed that the probability of classifying a 'family' group increased with date, and decreased with group size, distance to the observer, and time of day. Our results do not support the null hypothesis and suggest that road surveys are unsuitable to estimate reliably the social structure or sex ratio of guanaco populations. Le guanaco (Lama guanicoe (Muller, 1776)) est un mammifere polygyne monomorphe; on s'attend a ce que le rapport des sexes chez les adultes soit equilibre ou alors qu'il favorise les femelles. On estime souvent des rapports des sexes de guanacos adultes qui favorisent remarquablement les males a partir d'inventaires faits sur les routes. Nous analysons la distribution des groupes sociaux de guanacos enregistree durant des inventaires faits a partir de la route en Patagonie, Argentine, afin de verifier les hypotheses selon lesquelles l'identification des groupes d'apres les traits comportementaux n'est pas univoque et qu'elle peut etre faussee par des facteurs de l'inventaire. Les guanacos sont organises en trois unites sociales (les groupes familiaux, les groupes de males et les males solitaires) qui s'identifient par leur comportement de regroupement. Nous avons observe 992 groupes de guanacos et estime un rapport des sexes de 3,2 males/femelle chez les adultes. Nous utilisons des modeles additifs generalises pour tester l'hypothese nulle qui veut que la probabilite d'identifier un rassemblement comme un groupe familial reste constante. Autrement, cette probabilite pourrait diminuer lorsque l'abondance de jeunes et(ou) leur detectabilite sont faibles. Le modele le plus parcimonieux montre que la probabilite d'identifier un groupe 'familial' augmente en fonction de la date et diminue en fonction de la taille du groupe, la distance de l'observateur et l'heure du jour. Nos resultats n'appuient pas l'hypothese nulle et ils indiquent que les inventaires faits a partir de la route sont inadequats pour une estimation fiable de la structure sociale ou de la proportion des sexes dans les populations de guanacos. 43. Inferring Species Interactions from Long-Term Monitoring Programs: Carnivores in a Protected Area from Southern Patagonia

Abstract

Protected areas recently created in Argentina often include previously degraded lands, such as sheep ranches in the Patagonian deserts. We show the results of a 14-year monitoring program of three formerly persecuted carnivores, the culpeo fox (Lycalopex culpaeus), the South American grey fox (Lycalopex griseus) and the puma (Puma concolor), in two abandoned sheep ranches that were incorporated into a Patagonian national park approximately 25 years ago. The culpeo fox population underwent an average annual decline of 10–23%, whereas the grey fox and puma populations increased at an average annual rate of 7% and 19%, respectively. The grey fox’s increasing trends were strongly correlated with the decline of the culpeo fox, whereas the correlations between the fox and puma trends were weaker. Culpeo fox decline was stronger in the ranch where sheep and predator controls had been removed earlier. These relationships between species trends support the competitive release hypothesis, assuming that puma competition with the culpeo fox for trophic resources is stronger than competition with the grey fox, and that the puma can exclude culpeo foxes through interference. Species trends suggest a competitive hierarchy between fox species, with grey fox being the inferior competitor. However, mechanisms other than competition could not be discounted. Our study illustrates how long-term monitoring of interacting species allows a better understanding of ecological processes and wildlife ecology.

Se registran por primera vez pulgas en Lycalopex griseus y Lycalopex culpaeus de la Patagonia argentina (Parque Nacional Bosques Petrificados de Jaramillo y Parque Nacional Monte León). Las pulgas colectadas (n = 151, Prevalencia [P] = 80.80%, Abundancia media [AM] = 5.80, Intensidad media [IM] = 7.19) fueron identificadas como Pulex irritans (n = 144, P = 80.80 %, AM = 5.54, IM = 6.85) y Polygenis (Polygenis) platensis (n = 7,P = 19.20%, AM = 0.27, IM = 1.40). Pulex irritans es un reconocido vector de diversos patógenos; su presencia en L. culpaeus de Santa Cruz amplía su distribución geográfica hacia el sur, representando un potencial riesgo sanitario. Registramos por primera vez P. (P.) platensis en Lycalopex. Esta especie de pulga parasita principalmente roedores, por lo que su asociación con Lycalopeximplicaría una relación depredador-presa, vía común de colonización en sifonápteros., First record of fleas (Insecta, Siphonaptera) in populations of Lycalopex (Carnivora, Canidae from Patagonia, Argentina. Fleas are recorded for the first time on Lycalopex griseus and Lycalopex culpaeus from Patagonia (Parque Nacional Bosques Petrificados de Jaramillo and Parque Nacional Monte León). The collected fleas (n=151 Prevalence [P]=80.80%, Mean abundance [MA]=5.80, Mean intensity [MI]=7.19) were identified as: Pulex irritans (n=144, P=80.80 %, MA =5.54, MI= 6.85) and Polygenis (Polygenis) platensis (n=7, P=19.20%, MA=0.27, MI=1.40). Pulex irritans is a recognized vector of several pathogens; its presence in L. culpaeus of Santa Cruz extends its geographic distribution towards the south, representing a potential health risk. This is the first record of P. (P.) platensis in Lycalopex. 49. Environmental factors influencing guanaco distribution and abundance in central Patagonia, Argentina

Abstract

Context: The guanaco is the largest wild herbivore inhabiting the Patagonian steppes. Since the end of the 19th Century, it has suffered a progressive decline in numbers owing to poaching and unregulated hunting because of on an assumed competition with sheep. Unfortunately, there has never been a management program for guanaco populations in Argentine Patagonia. Consequently, the guanaco is still considered a pest species by ranchers and has never been considered profitable in the range management model implemented in Patagonia. Aims: The present article updates the distribution limits of guanaco and estimate its abundance across Chubut, a large province of Patagonia, Argentina. The relative effects of several environmental and anthropogenic factors on guanaco distribution are also assessed. Methods: Road surveys (7010 km) and species distribution modelling were used to build a habitat suitability model and a distribution map. A distance sampling method was used to estimate guanaco population densities and size. The survey effort required to monitor population trends in this region was also calculated. Key results: According to the best habitat suitability model, guanaco distribution decreased with altitude and primary productivity, as measured by Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), and increased with the distance to the nearest urban centre and oil field. Guanaco distribution showed a clear geographical pattern in Chubut, with low to medium occurrence probability towards the west and higher values towards the east. Guanaco population size was estimated as 657 304 individuals (95% CI 457 437 to 944 059), with a mean density of 2.97 guanacos km . Finally, through simulations of guanaco monitoring, it was estimated that an annual survey effort of 10 to thirty 30-km road transects is needed to detect with confidence a significant population decrease or increase over the next 6 or 10 years. 50. Tendencias en dos poblaciones de cánidos silvestres tras 14 años de seguimiento en un área protegida recientemente ampliada en la Patagonia Austral Argentina

Abstract

El seguimiento de las poblaciones de fauna silvestre es clave para conservar la biodiversidad, así como para comprender el funcionamiento de los ecosistemas. Permite tomar decisiones de gestión adecuadas a las tendencias detectadas, siendo fundamental para comprender los procesos ecológicos que las explican. Presentamos los resultados del seguimiento realizado durante 14 años para dos cánidos patagónicos en simpatría, el zorro colorado (Pseudalopex culpaeus) y el zorro gris (Pseudalopex griseus), en el Parque Nacional Bosques Petrificados de Jaramillo (Patagonia Austral Argentina). El seguimiento se basó en estaciones de cebado para registrar huellas. Se instalaron 16 líneas cada año (6 estaciones/línea), en otoño y primavera, permaneciendo activas durante tres días consecutivos. Para el análisis de tendencias poblacionales se utilizaron regresiones de Poisson (Rtrim, software R) de forma general y a nivel de estación. La población de zorro colorado mostró una fuerte disminución general, con una tasa de descenso anual del 17%, que varió estacionalmente, siendo máxima en otoño (23%) y moderada en primavera (10%). Por el contrario, la población de zorro gris se incrementó significativamente de forma moderada, con valores similares a nivel general y estacional (~7%). Estos resultados concuerdan con la hipótesis de la “liberación” de mesodepredadores, por la que ante una disminución de competidores dominantes, como el zorro colorado, subordinados como el zorro gris, incrementan su abundancia. Igualmente, la reciente incorporación al parque de dos establecimientos ganaderos donde cesó la persecución del puma Puma concolor, que pudo recuperarse y paulatinamente excluir al zorro colorado, desencadenando lo observado para los zorros.
