Abstract

In the last few years, increasing interest from researchers and companies has been shown in the development of photocatalytic coatings for air purification and self-cleaning applications. In order to maintain the photocatalyst's concentration as low as possible, highly active materials and/or combinations of them are required. In this work, novel photocatalytic formulations containing g-C3N4/TiO2 composites were prepared and deposited in the form of coatings on a-block substrates. The obtained photocatalytic surfaces were tested for NOx and acetaldehyde removal from model air. It was found that the addition of only 0.5 wt% g-C3N4 towards TiO2 content results in over 50% increase in the photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation in comparison to pure TiO2 coating, while the activity under UV light was not affected. The result was related to the creation of a g-C3N4/TiO2 heterojunction that improves the light absorption and the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, as well as to the inhibition of TiO2 particles' agglomeration due to the presence of g-C3N4 sheets. Abstract

The Cu-based heterogeneous photo-Fenton-like process has emerged as a promising technology in wastewater treatment, but efficient light harvesting and sufficient utilization of photogenerated electrons are still core issues. Herein, a dual strategy was proposed to achieve the high-efficiency removal of refractory organic pollutants using a Cu-doped zeolite with Cu0and oxygen vacancies (Cu0@CuZ) in the photo-Fenton-like reaction. This is the first time that such a strategy employing Cu-based zeolites has been used. Cu0@CuZ can completely degrade 20 mg L−1phenol within 15 min under visible-light irradiation, and the rate constant was 40, 55, and 65 times higher than Cu2O, CuO, and Cu0, respectively. Cu0@CuZ also presented excellent degradation performance for other typical refractory organic pollutants, surpassing most of the reported Cu-based catalysts to date. This superior performance highly depends on oxygen vacancies (Vo) and plasmonic Cu nanoparticles. The introduction of Vo and the creation of the surface plasmon resonance effect greatly enhanced the visible-light harvesting ability of the catalyst. Impressively, Vo and Cu0nanoparticles served as dual-channels for efficient electron transfer by enriching and then transferring photogenerated electrons to Cu(ii), greatly expediting the reduction of Cu(ii) to Cu(i). The synergistic effects of the dual-channel electron transfer and light-harvesting ability achieved sustained Cu(ii)/Cu(i) cycling, thereby promoting H2O2activation to produce more active species for organic pollutant degradation. This work provides an ingenious strategy to rationally establish a high-efficiency photo-Fenton-like catalyst for water remediation.

Abstract

New heterojunction materials (HJs) were synthesized in-situ by molecularly bonding the monomers of a triazine-based covalent organic framework (bulk COF) on the template of exfoliated carbon nitride (g-C3N4). The photocatalysts reduced carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide in aqueous dispersions under UV irradiation. The g-C3N4 showed production of 6.50 μmol CO g−1 h−1 and the bulk COF of 2.77 μmol CO g−1 h−1. The CO yield was evaluated in sustainability photoreduction cycles and their CO2 uptake capacity and isosteric heat of adsorption were estimated. All the heterojunction photocatalysts obtained ameliorated CO production rates compared to the bulk COF. Finally, the influence of the Pt co-catalyst on the photocatalytic activities was determined without the addition of any sacrificial agent, and the COF:g-C3N4 heterojunction with the ratio of 1:10 was proven to be a photocatalytic system with an optimum and selective, CO yield of 7.56 μmol g−1 h−1. 39. Photocatalytic H-2 evolution, CO2 reduction, and NOx oxidation by highly exfoliated g-C3N4

Abstract

g-C3N4, with specific surface area up to 513 m(2)/g, was prepared via three successive thermal treatments at 550 degrees C in air with gradual precursor mass decrease. The obtained bulk and exfoliated (1ex, 2ex and 3ex) g-C3N4 were characterized and tested as photocatalysts for H-2 production, CO2 reduction and NOx oxidation. The exfoliated samples demonstrated graphene-like morphology with detached (2ex) and sponge-like framework (3ex) of layers. The surface area increased drastically from 20 m(2)/g (bulk) to 513 m(2)/g (3ex). The band gap (E-g) increased gradually from 2.70 to 3.04 eV. Superoxide radicals (O-center dot(2)-) were mainly formed under UV and visible light. In comparison to the bulk, the exfoliated g-C3N4 demonstrated significant increase in H-2 evolution (similar to 6 times), CO2 reduction (similar to 3 times) and NOx oxidation (similar to 4 times) under UV light. Despite the E-g widening, the photocatalytic performance of the exfoliated g-C3N4 under visible light was improved too. The results were related to the large surface area and low e(-)-h(+) recombination. The highly exfoliated g-C3N4 demonstrated selectivity towards H-2 evolution reactions. Abstract

Growth of few-layer graphene using ferrocene as precursor by chemical vapor deposition is reported. The growth did not involve any additional carbon or catalyst source or external hydrocarbon gases. Parametric investigation was performed using different conditions, namely, varying growth temperature from 600 to 1000 °C, and growth duration from 5 min to 3 h, as well as using fast quenching or gradual cooling after the thermal treatment, in order to examine the effect on the quality of the produced graphene. The growth took place on silicon wafers and resulted, under optimal conditions, in formation of graphene with 2-3 layers and high graphitic quality, as evidenced by Raman spectroscopy, with characteristic full width at half maximum of the 2D band of 49.46 cm-1, and I2D/IG and ID/IG intensity ratios of 1.15 and 0.26, respectively. Atomic force microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were employed to further evaluate graphene characteristics and enlighten growth mechanism. Electrochemical evaluation of the developed material was performed using cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and galvanostatic charge-discharge measurements.
