We examine the scattering of Ostrovsky wave packets, generated from an incident solitary wave, in a two layered waveguide with a delamination in the centre and soft (imperfect) bonding either side of the centre. The layers of the waveguide are assumed to consist of different materials, and the strains are described by a system of coupled Boussinesq equations. A semi-analytical approach consisting of matched asymptotic multiple-scale expansions is applied, leading to Ostrovsky equations in soft bonded regions and Korteweg-de Vries equations in the delaminated region. This semi-analytical method has good agreement with direct numerical simulations, validating the approach. In the delaminated regions, Ostrovsky wave packets evolve into a train of solitary waves, which subsequently evolve into Ostrovsky wave packets in the second bonded region. Analysis of the phase shift in the wave packet, introduced from the delaminated region, allows us to predict both the position and the length of the delamination; the first time this has been achieved using nonlinear waves. These results motivate experiments to validate the theoretical results, with the aim of creating a tool to monitor the integrity of layered structures., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

In this paper we examine the effect of delamination on wave scattering, with the aim of creating a control measure for layered waveguides of various bonding types. Previous works have considered specific widths of solitary waves for the simulations, without analysing the effect of changing the soliton parameters. We consider two multi-layered structures: one containing delamination "sandwiched" by perfect bonding and one containing delamination but "sandwiched" by soft bonding. These structures are modelled by coupled Boussinesq-type equations. Matched asymptotic multiple-scale expansions lead to coupled Ostrovsky equations in soft bonded regions and Korteweg-De Vries equations in the perfectly bonded and delaminated region. We use the Inverse Scattering Transform to predict the behaviour in the delaminated regions. In both cases, numerical analysis shows that we can predict the delamination length by changes in the wave structure, and that these changes depend upon the Full Width at Half Magnitude (FWHM) of the incident soliton. In the case of perfect bonding, we derive a theoretical prediction for the change and confirm this numerically. For the soft bonding case, we numerically identify a similar relationship using the change in amplitude. Therefore we only need to compute one curve to determine the behaviour for any incident solitary wave, creating a framework for designing measurement campaigns for rigorously testing the integrity of layered structures., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

Coupled Boussinesq equations describe long weakly-nonlinear longitudinal strain waves in a bi-layer with a soft bonding between the layers (e.g. a soft adhesive). From the mathematical viewpoint, a particularly difficult case appears when the linear long-wave speeds in the layers are significantly different (high-contrast case). The traditional derivation of the uni-directional models leads to four uncoupled Ostrovsky equations, for the right- and left-propagating waves in each layer. However, the models impose a ``zero-mass constraint'' i.e. the initial conditions should necessarily have zero mean, restricting the applicability of that description. Here, we bypass the contradiction in this high-contrast case by constructing the solution for the deviation from the evolving mean value, using asymptotic multiple-scale expansions involving two pairs of fast characteristic variables and two slow-time variables. By construction, the Ostrovsky equations emerging within the scope of this derivation are solved for initial conditions with zero mean while initial conditions for the original system may have non-zero mean values. Asymptotic validity of the solution is carefully examined numerically. We apply the models to the description of counter-propagating waves generated by solitary wave initial conditions, or co-propagating waves generated by cnoidal wave initial conditions, as well as the resulting wave interactions, and contrast with the behaviour of the waves in bi-layers when the linear long-wave speeds in the layers are close (low-contrast case). In this paper we present a numerical scheme for solving a system of Boussinesq-type equations. This can correspond to longitudinal displacements in a multi-layered elastic bar with delamination, with conditions on the interface between the sections of the bar. The method is initially presented for two coupled equations in each section and multiple sections in the bar, and later extended to any number of layers. Previous works have presented a similar method constructed using finite-difference methods, however these only solved for two sections of the bar at a time which limited the scope of studies using these methods. The new method presented here solves for all sections at a given time step and therefore the transmitted and reflected waves in each section of the bar can be studied. The new results are shown to be in excellent agreement with previously obtained results and a further study is performed showing that the delamination width can be inferred from the changes to the incident soliton. The generalised form of this method, for any number of sections and layers with coupling terms independent of time derivatives, can be used to study the behaviour of longitudinal waves in more complicated waveguides in future studies., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures

Weakly-nonlinear waves in a layered waveguide with an imperfect interface (soft bonding between the layers) can be modelled using coupled Boussinesq equations. We assume that the materials of the layers have close mechanical properties, in which case the system can support radiating solitary waves. We construct a weakly-nonlinear d'Alembert-type solution of this system, considering the problem in the class of periodic functions on an interval of finite length. The solution is constructed using a novel multiple-scales procedure involving fast characteristic variables and two slow time variables. Asymptotic validity of the solution is carefully examined numerically. We also discuss the limiting case of an infinite interval for localised initial conditions. In this paper we construct a weakly-nonlinear d'Alembert-type solution of the Cauchy problem for a Boussinesq-Klein-Gordon equation. Similarly to our earlier work based on the use of spatial Fourier series, we consider the problem in the class of periodic functions on an interval of finite length (including the limiting case of an "infinite" interval with zero boundary conditions), and work with the equation describing a deviation from the mean value. Unlike our earlier paper, here we develop a novel multiple-scales procedure involving fast characteristic variables and two slow time scales, which allows us to construct an explicit and compact d'Alembert-type solution of the nonlinear problem in terms of solutions of two Ostrovsky equations emerging at the leading order and describing the right- and left-propagating waves. Validity of the constructed solution follows from our earlier results, and is illustrated numerically for a number of instructive examples, both for periodic solutions on a finite interval, and the well-studied scenario for localised solutions on a large ("infinite") interval. Importantly, in all cases the initial conditions for the leading-order Ostrovsky equations by construction have zero mass. We study solitary wave solutions of the fifth-order Korteweg - de Vries equation which contains, besides the traditional quadratic nonlinearity and third-order dispersion, additional terms including cubic nonlinearity and fifth order linear dispersion, as well as two nonlinear dispersive terms. An exact solitary wave solution to this equation is derived and the dependence of its amplitude, width and speed on the parameters of the governing equation are studied. It is shown that the derived solution can represent either an embedded or regular soliton depending on the equation parameters. The nonlinear dispersive terms can drastically influence the existence of solitary waves, their nature (regular or embedded), profile, polarity, and stability with respect to small perturbations. We show, in particular, that in some cases embedded solitons can be stable even with respect to interactions with regular solitons. The results obtained are applicable to surface and internal waves in fluids, as well as to waves in other media (plasma, solid waveguides, elastic media with microstructure, etc.)., Comment: 37 pages, 27 figures

We study the scattering of a long longitudinal radiating bulk strain solitary wave in the delaminated area of a two-layered elastic structure with soft (`imperfect') bonding between the layers within the scope of the coupled Boussinesq equations. The direct numerical modelling of this and similar problems is challenging and has natural limitations. We develop a semi-analytical approach, based on the use of several matched asymptotic multiple-scale expansions and averaging with respect to the fast space variable, leading to the coupled Ostrovsky equations in bonded regions and uncoupled Korteweg-de Vries equations in the delaminated region. We show that the semi-analytical approach agrees well with direct numerical simulations and use it to study the nonlinear dynamics and scattering of the radiating solitary wave in a wide range of bi-layers with delamination. The results indicate that radiating solitary waves could help us to control the integrity of layered structures with imperfect interfaces., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures. Integrity of layered structures, extensively used in modern industry, strongly depends on the quality of their interfaces; poor adhesion or delamination can lead to a failure of the structure. Can nonlinear waves help us to control the quality of layered structures? In this paper we numerically model the dynamics of a long longitudinal strain solitary wave in a split, symmetric layered bar. The recently developed analytical approach, based on matching two asymptotic multiple-scales expansions and the integrability theory of the KdV equation by the Inverse Scattering Transform, is used to develop an effective semi-analytical numerical approach for these types of problems. We also employ a direct finite-difference method and compare the numerical results with each other, and with the analytical predictions. The numerical modelling confirms that delamination causes fission of an incident solitary wave and, thus, can be used to detect the defect., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures.
