The investigation of phraseology through corpus-based and computational approaches holds significant relevance for various professionals, including translators, interpreters, terminologists, lexicographers, language instructors, and learners. Computational Phraseology, and in particular the computational analysis of multiword expressions (also known as multiword units), has gained prominence in recent years and is essential for a number of Natural Language Processing and Translation Technology applications. The failure to detect these units automatically could result in incorrect and problematic automatic translations and could hinder the performance of applications such as text summarisation and web search. Against this background, the volume offers 13 articles carefully selected and organised into two parts: ‘Computational treatment of multiword units'and ‘Corpus-based and linguistic studies in phraseology‘. The contributions not only highlight the latest advancements in computational and corpus-based phraseology but also reiterate its vital role in all areas of language technologies, including basic and applied research.

La lengua espanÞola es utilizada por casi cuatrocientos millones de personas en dos continentes. Este elevado nuìmero de ususarios y su amplitud geograìfica explican la existencia de distintas variedades lingüiìsticas en su uso, hecho que repercute en el espanÞol utilizado como lengua de traduccioìn. Este libro es el resultado de un proyecto de investigación cuyo objetivo ha sido explorar de modo sincrónico y diacrónico las políticas editoriales aplicadas a la traducción literaria en España y América y su repercusión en la lengua de traducción, en este caso el español. Para ello se acotan cuatro grandes ámbitos de investigación: estudios sobre traductoras y traductores, análisis y comparación de traducciones, revisión de traducciones y recurso al español neutro, e historias editoriales. El equipo investigador se compone de expertos de la Universidad de Málaga (España) y de universidades hispanoamericanas: UNAM (México), El Colegio de México, Universidad de los Andes (Chile) y Universidad de Buenos Aires (Argentina). La metodología empleada, enmarcada en la Traductología moderna, es de carácter descriptivo y sociológico, guiada por el concepto de transversalidad en el pasado y presente de la traducción en el mundo hispanohablante. Se ha trabajado a partir de un corpus selectivo de traducciones desde distintas lenguas al español que destacan por sus especiales características o cuyos contextos de producción y recepción son de especial interés en nuestra investigación.

This book assembles fifteen original, interdisciplinary research chapters that explore methodological and conceptual considerations as well as user and usage studies to elucidate the relation between the translation product and translation/post-editing processes. This monograph examines how higher education(HE) institutions construct ‘professional identities'in the classroom, specifically how dominant discourses in institutions frame the social role, requisite skills and character required to practice a profession, and how students navigate these along their academic trajectories. This book is based on a longitudinal case study of a prestigious HE institution specialising in training professional interpreters. Adopting an innovative research approach, it investigates a community of aspiring professionals in a HE context by drawing on small story narrative analysis from an ethnographic perspective to provide emic insights into the student community and the development of their social identities. The findings (contextualised by examining the curricula of similar institutions worldwide) suggest that interpreter institutions might not be providing students with a clear and comprehensive picture of the interpreterprofession, and not responding to its increasingly complex role in today's society.

This volume is a compendium of PACTE Group's experimental research in Translation Competence since 1997. The book is organised in four main parts and also includes eight appendices and a glossary. Part I presents the conceptual and methodological framework of PACTE's Translation Competence research design. Part II focuses on the methodological aspects of the research design and its development: exploratory tests and pilot studies carried out; experiment design; characteristics of the sample population; procedures of data collection and analysis. Part III presents the results obtained in the experiment related to: the Acceptability of the translations produced in the experiment and the six dependent variables of study (Knowledge of Translation; Translation Project; Identification and Solution of Translation Problems; Decision-making; Efficacy of the Translation Process; Use of Instrumental Resources); this part also includes a corpus analysis of the translations. Part IV analyses the translators who were ranked highest in the experiment and goes on to present final conclusions as well as PACTE's perspectives in the field of Translation Competence research.

Empirical research is carried out in a cyclic way: approaching a research area bottom-up, data lead to interpretations and ideally to the abstraction of laws, on the basis of which a theory can be derived. Deductive research is based on a theory, on the basis of which hypotheses can be formulated and tested against the background of empirical data. Looking at the state-of-the-art in translation studies, either theories as well as models are designed or empirical data are collected and interpreted. However, the final step is still lacking: so far, empirical data has not lead to the formulation of theories or models, whereas existing theories and models have not yet been comprehensively tested with empirical methods.This publication addresses these issues from several perspectives: multi-method product- as well as process-based research may gain insights into translation as well as interpreting phenomena. These phenomena may include cognitive and organizational processes, procedures and strategies, competence and performance, translation properties and universals, etc. Empirical findings about the deeper structures of translation and interpreting will reduce the gap between translation and interpreting practice and model and theory building. Furthermore, the availability of more large-scale empirical testing triggers the development of models and theories concerning translation and interpreting phenomena and behavior based on quantifiable, replicable and transparent data.

This book presents an East-West dialogue of leading translation scholars responding to and developing Martha Cheung's'pushing-hands'method of translation studies. Pushing-hands was an idea Martha began exploring in the last four years of her life, and only had time to publish at article length in 2012. The concept of pushing-hands suggests a promising line of inquiry into the problem of conflict in translation. Pushing-hands opens a new vista for translation scholars to understand and explain how to develop an awareness of non-confrontational, alternative ways to handle translation problems or problems related to translation activities that are likely to give rise to tension and conflict. The book is a timely contribution to celebrate Martha's work and also to move the conversation forward. Despite being somewhat tentative and experimental, it probes into how to enable and develop dynamic interaction between and reciprocal determinism of different hands involved in the process of translation.

Este volumen recoge una selección de 37 artículos sobre cuestiones generales de Traductología (Didáctica de la traducción, Traducción y Lingüística, Traducción literaria, Traducción especializada, Teoría de la Traducción y la Interpretación). A las líneas tradicionales de investigación se han incorporado los enfoques más recientes en el ámbito de la Translatología. El amplio abanico de temas tratados, que abarca aspectos como la mediación intercultural, la interpretación de lengua de signos, la traducción colectiva o el estudio de la dimensión económica de la traducción, entre otros, muestra la buena salud de la disciplina, concretamente en el par de lenguas alemán y español. Dieser Band präsentiert eine Auswahl von 37 Beiträgen zu allgemeinen Fragen der Übersetzungswissenschaft (Didaktik der Übersetzung, Übersetzung und Linguistik, Literarische Übersetzung, Fachübersetzung, Theorie des Übersetzens und Dolmetschens). Es handelt sich um eine Sammlung von Beiträgen, in denen nicht nur allgemein anerkannte Forschungsrichtungen, sondern auch die neuesten Forschungsrichtungen im Bereich der Translatologie ihren Platz haben. Der breit gefächerte Themenbereich (interkulturelle Mediation, Gebärdensprache, kollektives Übersetzen, Studien zur wirtschaftlichen Dimension der Übersetzung, u. a.) zeugt von der grossen Diversität der Disziplin, insbesondere im Sprachenpaar Deutsch–Spanisch.

Textverstehen ist ein komplexer und für den Lateinunterricht konstitutiver kognitiver Prozess, dessen einzelne Elemente sich nur schwer ohne empirische Untersuchungen analysieren lassen. Viele Theorien – zum Teil entliehen aus anderen Disziplinen – versuchen, die Prozesse beim Übersetzen aus dem Lateinischen zu erklären. Empirische Überprüfungen und Untersuchungen hierzu liegen bisher jedoch kaum vor. Mit Hilfe qualitativer Methoden wurde nun das intuitive Vorgehen von Schülerinnen und Schülern abgebildet und analysiert. Die Ergebnisse gewähren Einblicke in den Prozess des Übersetzens, Verstehens und der Wörterbucharbeit, die durch die üblichen Diagnoseverfahren in der Schule nicht geboten werden können, und ermöglichen einen neuen Blick auf bestehende Theorien.

For some time already, a discourse within the field of Translation Studies has increasingly focused on the translator, his/her translation properties and mental processes resulting from their application. Recent years and advances in technology have opened up many possibilities of gaining a deeper insight into these processes. This publication presents the theoretical foundations, the results of scientific experiments, and a broad range of questions to be asked and answered by eye-tracking supported translation studies. 'This research monograph is an investigation of wh-movement and wh-expletive constructions in the Indic languages Kashmiri and Hindi-Urdu. It advances a novel theory of the periphery, or the clausal positions that mediate A-bar movement. In particular, a detailed study of wh-expletives and wh-expletive constructions reveals an underlying similarity of design between the A and A-bar systems, and indicates that the two can be understood as driven by the same basic set of mechanisms. The monograph offers an account of wh-movement and the clausal periphery in the two languages, informed by the latest strands of research on the syntax and semantics of A-bar movement. This micro-comparative analytical method yields an important result: we can understand a set of systematic contrasts between the two languages in terms of the properties of specifically the phase-defining heads C and v. Empirically, this work explores the lesser-studied language Kashmiri, bringing to the fore linguistic data not yet discussed in formal syntactic literature. The significance of these data for the development of the wider theoretical framework is stressed throughout, making the book of substantial interest for general linguistic research.'

This volume deals with Translation Research (TR) and Interpreting Research (IR). In the main contribution, Daniel Gile from the Université Lumière Lyon 2 (France) explores kinship, differences and prospects for partnership between the two. He gives an overview of the history of research into translation and interpreting, explores commonalities and reviews differences between translation and interpreting, and discusses implications for research. He comments critically on the foci and paradigms in both TR and IR and on the epistemological and methodological problems they raise. He concludes by saying that Translation and Interpreting Studies are gaining both social cohesion and some weight as an academic identity. Child language brokering is a phenomenon that occurs frequently among children who speak English and their non-English speaking parents and friends. When children interpret for their family members and friends, it is unnoticed by many organizations such as schools, healthcare organizations and businesses. Therefore, child language brokers have missed the opportunity to be recognized for the unusual work that they perform almost daily. Prior research on this topic has primarily focused on Spanish-speaking children from areas such as Mexico and China. This study sought to share the lived experiences of female students from the country of El Salvador. The following research question guided this study: What are the lived experiences of a select group of female El Salvadoran child language brokers in a large urban school district? This question was explored through a survey and in-depth, semi-structured interviews where participants were able to share their experiences when language brokering. Twenty participants participated in the survey and seventeen completed the instrument. Of those individuals, five female students from El Salvador were selected to participate in a semi-structured interview. The survey results were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the interviews were analyzed to gain a thick, rich, description of the participants lived experiences as child language brokers. Four thematic findings emerged from NVivo coding: (a) trust, (b) happiness, (c) helping, and (d) learning. Given the findings of this study, the following three recommendations are offered to child language broker researchers as they seek to understand children who engage in this work: (a) explore why children broker for their friends and how this may impact that relationship. (b) reduce bias in the research by selecting an outside, non-interpreting researcher to collect both the qualitative and quantitative data, and (c) conduct research that answers the following 1) How do children perceive their abilities when language brokering? 2) Do participants think that their interpretation skills are important and valuable? and 3) How do participants perceive their language brokering skills within their school, school district and society?
