Search

Constraining the formation processes of small solar system bodies is crucial for gaining insights into planetesimal formation. Their bulk densities, determined by their compressive strengths, offer valuable information about their formation history. In this paper, we utilize a formulation of the compressive strength of dust aggregates obtained from dust N -body simulations to establish the relation between the bulk density and diameter. We find that this relation can be effectively approximated by a polytrope with an index of 0.5, coupled with a formulation of the compressive strength of dust aggregates. The lowest-density trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) and main-belt asteroids (MBAs) are well reproduced by dust aggregates composed of 0.1 μ m sized grains. However, most TNOs, MBAs, comets, and near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) exhibit higher densities, suggesting the influence of compaction mechanisms such as collision, dust grain disruption, sintering, or melting, leading to further growth. We speculate that there are two potential formation paths for small solar system bodies. One involves the direct coagulation of primordial dust grains, resulting in the formation of first-generation planetesimals, including the lowest-density TNOs, MBAs, and the parent bodies of comets and NEAs. In this case, comets and NEAs are fragments or rubble piles of first-generation planetesimals, and the objects themselves or the rubble are composed of 0.1 μ m sized grains. The other path involves the further potential fragmentation of first-generation planetesimals into the compact dust aggregates observed in protoplanetary disks, resulting in the formation of second-generation planetesimals composed of compact dust aggregates, which may contribute to explaining another formation process of comets and NEAs. Numerical modeling of the interaction of giant planets and the planetesimal disk was carried out for the Nice model, in which the initial orbits of the planets are in resonant configurations. In addition to the standard Nice model, planetesimals in the planetary region were considered and the self-gravity of the planetesimal disk was taken into account. The dynamic evolution of planetary systems has been studied over time intervals on the order of the lifetime of the Solar System. Options have been found in which planetary systems are preserved over billions of years, the final orbits of the planets are close to modern orbits and distant trans-Neptunian objects exist. The formation of the Inner Oort Cloud (IOC)—a vast halo of icy bodies residing far beyond Neptune’s orbit—is an expected outcome of the solar system’s primordial evolution within a stellar cluster. Recent models have shown that the process of early planetesimal capture within the trans-Neptunian region may have been sufficiently high for the cumulative mass of the Cloud to approach several Earth masses. In light of this, here we examine the dynamical evolution of the IOC, driven by its own self-gravity. We show that the collective gravitational potential of the IOC is adequately approximated by the Miyamoto–Nagai model and use a semi-analytic framework to demonstrate that the resulting secular oscillations are akin to the von Zeipel–Lidov–Kozai resonance. We verify our results with direct N-body calculations and examine the effects of IOC self-gravity on the long-term behavior of the solar system’s minor bodies using a detailed simulation. Cumulatively, we find that while the modulation of perihelion distances and inclinations can occur within an observationally relevant range, the associated timescales vastly surpass the age of the sun, indicating that the influence of IOC self-gravity on the architecture of the solar system is negligible. The irregular moons orbit the giant planets on distant, inclined, and eccentric trajectories, in sharp contrast with the coplanar and quasicircular orbits of the regular moons. The origin of these irregular moons is still an open question, but these moons have a lot in common with the objects beyond Neptune (trans-Neptunian objects—TNOs), suggestive of a common origin. Here, we show that the close flyby of a star may be the connecting element. A stellar flyby can simultaneously reproduce the complex TNO dynamics quantitatively while explaining the origin of the irregular moons and the color distributions of both populations. This flyby would have catapulted 7.2% of the original TNO population into the region of the planets, many on retrograde orbits. Most injected TNOs would have been subsequently ejected from the solar system (85%). However, a considerable fraction would have had the potential to be captured by the planets. The exclusively distant origin of the injected TNOs may also explain the lack of very red irregular moons.

The solar system’s distant reaches exhibit a wealth of anomalous dynamical structure, hinting at the presence of a yet-undetected, massive trans-Neptunian body—Planet Nine (P9). Previous analyses have shown how orbital evolution induced by this object can explain the origins of a broad assortment of exotic orbits, ranging from those characterized by high perihelia to those with extreme inclinations. In this work, we shift the focus toward a more conventional class of TNOs and consider the observed census of long-period, nearly planar, Neptune-crossing objects as a hitherto-unexplored probe of the P9 hypothesis. To this end, we carry out comprehensive N -body simulations that self-consistently model gravitational perturbations from all giant planets, the Galactic tide, as well as passing stars, stemming from initial conditions that account for the primordial giant planet migration and Sun's early evolution within a star cluster. Accounting for observational biases, our results reveal that the orbital architecture of this group of objects aligns closely with the predictions of the P9-inclusive model. In stark contrast, the P9-free scenario is statistically rejected at a ∼5 σ confidence level. Accordingly, this work introduces a new line of evidence supporting the existence of P9 and further delineates a series of observational predictions poised for near-term resolution.

We examined the past history of the three most detached trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs)—Sedna, 2012 VP _113 , and Leleakuhonua (2015 TG _387 )—the three clearest members of the dynamical class known as sednoids, with high perihelia distances q . By integrating backward their nominal (and a set of cloned) orbits for the solar system’s age, we surprisingly find that the only time all their apsidal lines tightly cluster was 4.5 Gyr ago, at perihelion longitude ϖ of 200°. This “primordial alignment” is independent of the observational biases that contribute to the current on-sky clustering in the large-semimajor-axis Kuiper Belt. If future sednoid discoveries confirm these findings, this strongly argues for an initial event during the planet formation epoch, which imprinted this particular apsidal orientation on the early detached TNO population. Their apsidal orientations were then subsequently modified only by the simple precession from the four giant planets (and weakly by the galactic tide). If other sednoids also cluster around the same primordial value, various models suggesting a still present planet in the outer solar system would be incompatible with this alignment. We inspected two scenarios that could potentially explain the primordial alignment. First, a rogue planet model (where another massive planet raises perihelia near its own longitude until ejection) naturally produces this signature. Alternatively, a close stellar passage early in solar system history raises perihelia, but it is poor at creating strong apsidal clustering. We show that all other known 35 < q < 55 au TNOs are either too perturbed or orbits are still too uncertain to provide evidence for or against this paradigm.

We report the detection of 239 trans-Neptunian objects discovered through the ongoing New Horizons survey for distant minor bodies being performed with the Hyper Suprime-Cam mosaic imager on the Subaru Telescope. These objects were discovered in images acquired with either the r 2 or the recently commissioned EB- gri filter using shift and stack routines. Due to the extremely high stellar density of the search region downstream of the spacecraft, new machine learning techniques had to be developed to manage the extremely high false-positive rate of bogus candidates produced from the shift and stack routines. We report discoveries as faint as r 2 ∼ 26.5. We highlight an overabundance of objects found at heliocentric distances R ≳ 70 au compared to expectations from modeling of the known outer solar system. If confirmed, these objects betray the presence of a heretofore-unrecognized abundance of distant objects that can help explain a number of other observations that otherwise remain at odds with the known Kuiper Belt, including detections of serendipitous stellar occultations, and recent results from the Student Dust Counter on board the New Horizons spacecraft.

Following the Pluto flyby of the New Horizons spacecraft, the mission provided a unique opportunity to explore the Kuiper Belt in situ. The possibility existed to fly by a Kuiper Belt object (KBO), as well as to observe additional objects at distances closer than are feasible from Earth-orbit facilities. However, at the time of launch no KBOs were known about that were accessible by the spacecraft. In this paper we present the results of 10 yr of observations and three uniquely dedicated efforts—two ground-based using the Subaru Suprime Camera, the Magellan MegaCam and IMACS Cameras, and one with the Hubble Space Telescope—to find such KBOs for study. In this paper we overview the search criteria and strategies employed in our work and detail the analysis efforts to locate and track faint objects in the Galactic plane. We also present a summary of all of the KBOs that were discovered as part of our efforts and how spacecraft targetability was assessed, including a detailed description of our astrometric analysis, which included development of an extensive secondary calibration network. Overall, these efforts resulted in the discovery of 85 KBOs, including 11 that became objects for distant observation by New Horizons and (486958) Arrokoth, which became the first post-Pluto flyby destination.

Binaries in the Kuiper Belt are common. Here we present our analysis of the Solar System Origins Legacy Survey (SSOLS) to show that using a point-spread function (PSF)-fitting method can roughly double the number of binaries identified in that data set. Out of 198 Kuiper Belt objects (KBOs) observed by SSOLS, we find 23 to be visually separated binaries, while a further 19 are blended PSF binaries detectable with the method we present here. This is an overall binary fraction of 21% for the SSOLS data set of cold classical KBOs. In addition, we tested our fitting methods on synthetic data, and while we were able to show them to be very effective at detecting certain blended-PSF binary KBOs, fainter or closer binary KBOs may easily be missed, suggesting that the close binary KBO fraction could be even higher. These results strongly support the idea that most (if not all) KBOs were formed through the streaming instability process, and as a consequence, most KBOs were formed as near-equal mass binaries.

Modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND), which postulates a breakdown of Newton's laws of gravity/dynamics below some critical acceleration threshold, can explain many otherwise puzzling observational phenomena on galactic scales. MOND competes with the hypothesis of dark matter, which successfully explains the cosmic microwave background and large-scale structure. Here we provide the first solar system test of MOND that probes the subcritical acceleration regime. Using the Bekenstein–Milgrom “aquadratic Lagrangian” (or AQUAL) formulation, we simulate the evolution of myriads of test particles (planetesimals or comets) born in the trans-Neptunian region and scattered by the giant planets over the lifetime of the Sun to heliocentric distances of 10 ^2 –10 ^5 au. We include the effects of the Galactic tidal field and passing stars. While Newtonian simulations reproduce the distribution of binding energies of long-period and Oort-cloud comets detectable from Earth, MOND-based simulations do not. This conclusion is robust to plausible changes in the migration history of the planets, the migration history of the Sun, the MOND transition function, effects of the Sun's birth cluster, and the fading properties of long-period comets. For the most popular version of AQUAL, characterized by a gradual transition between the Newtonian and MOND regimes, our MOND-based simulations also fail to reproduce the orbital distribution of trans-Neptunian objects in the detached disk (perihelion q > 38 au). Our results do not rule out some MOND theories more elaborate than AQUAL, in which non-Newtonian effects are screened on small spatial scales, at small masses, or in external gravitational fields comparable in strength to the critical acceleration.

Neptune’s external mean-motion resonances play an important role in sculpting the observed population of trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs). The population of scattering TNOs is known to “stick” to Neptune's resonances while evolving in semimajor axis ( a ), though simulations show that resonance sticking is less prevalent at a ≳ 200–250 au. Here we present an extensive numerical exploration of the strengths of Neptune's resonances for scattering TNOs with perihelion distances q = 33 au. We show that the drop-off in resonance sticking for the large a scattering TNOs is not a generic feature of scattering dynamics but can instead be attributed to the specific configuration of Neptune and Uranus in our solar system. In simulations with just Uranus removed from the giant planet system, Neptune's resonances are strong in the scattering population out to at least ∼300 au. Uranus and Neptune are near a 2:1 period ratio, and the variations in Neptune's orbit resulting from this near-resonance are responsible for destabilizing Neptune's resonances for high- e TNO orbits beyond the ∼20:1 resonance at a ≈ 220 au. Direct interactions between Uranus and the scattering population are responsible for slightly weakening Neptune's closer-in resonances. In simulations where Neptune and Uranus are placed in their mutual 2:1 resonance, we see almost no stable libration of scattering particles in Neptune's external resonances. Our results have important implications for how the strengths of Neptune's distant resonances varied during the epoch of planet migration when the Neptune–Uranus period ratio was evolving. These strength variations likely affected the distant scattering, resonant, and detached TNO populations.

The 5:3 and 7:4 mean motion resonances of Neptune are at 42.3 and 43.7 au, respectively, and overlap with objects in the classical trans-Neptunian belt (Kuiper Belt). We report the complete/partial lightcurves of 13 and 14 trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) in the 5:3 and 7:4 resonances, respectively. We report a most likely contact binary in the 7:4 resonance, 2013 FR _28 , with a periodicity of 13.97 ± 0.04 hr and a lightcurve amplitude of 0.94 ± 0.02 mag. With a V-/U-shaped lightcurve, 2013 FR _28 has one of the largest well-sampled TNO amplitudes observed with ground-based observations, comparable to the well-determined contact binary 2001 QG _298 . 2013 FR _28 has a mass ratio q ∼ 1 with a density ρ ∼ 1 g cm ^−3 . We find several objects with large amplitudes and classify 2004 SC _60 , 2006 CJ _69 , and 2013 BN _82 as likely contact binaries and 2001 QF _331 , 2003 YW _179 , and 2015 FP _345 as likely elongated objects. We observe the 17:9 resonant or classical object 2003 SP _317 that we classify as a likely contact binary. A lower estimate of 10%–50% and 20%–55% for the fraction of (nearly) equal-sized contact binaries is calculated in the 5:3 and 7:4 resonances, respectively. Surface colors of 2004 SC _60 , 2013 BN _82 , 2014 OL _394 , and 2015 FP _345 have been obtained. Including these colors with ones from the literature reveals that elongated objects and contact binaries share the same ultrared surface color, except Manwë–Thorondor and 2004 SC _60 . Not only are the colors of the 7:4 and 5:3 TNOs similar to the cold classicals, but we demonstrate that the rotational properties of the 5:3 and 7:4 resonants are similar to those of the cold classicals, inferring a clear link between these subpopulations.

The dwarf planet Haumea is one of the most compelling trans-Neptunian objects to study, hosting two small, dynamically interacting satellites, a family of nearby spectrally unique objects, and a ring system. Haumea itself is extremely oblate due to its 3.9 hr rotation period. Understanding the orbits of Haumea’s satellites, named Hi’iaka and Namaka, requires detailed modeling of both satellite–satellite gravitational interactions and satellite interactions with Haumea’s nonspherical gravitational field (parameterized here as J _2 ). Understanding both of these effects allows for a detailed probe of the satellites’ masses and Haumea’s J _2 and spin pole. Measuring Haumea’s J _2 provides information about Haumea’s interior, possibly determining the extent of past differentation. In an effort to understand the Haumea system, we have performed detailed non-Keplerian orbit fitting of Haumea’s satellites using a decade of new, ultra-precise observations. Our fits detect Haumea’s J _2 and spin pole at ≳2.5 σ confidence. Degeneracies present in the dynamics prevent us from precisely measuring Haumea’s J _2 with the current data, but future observations should enable a precise measurement. Our dynamically determined spin pole shows excellent agreement with past results, illustrating the strength of non-Keplerian orbit fitting. We also explore the spin–orbit dynamics of Haumea and its satellites, showing that axial precession of Hi’iaka may be detectable over decadal timescales. Finally, we present an ephemeris of the Haumea system over the coming decade, enabling high-quality observations of Haumea and its satellites for years to come.

About 40 trans-Neptunian binaries (TNBs) have fully determined orbits with about 10 others being solved except for breaking the mirror ambiguity. Despite decades of study, almost all TNBs have only ever been analyzed with a model that assumes perfect Keplerian motion (e.g., two point masses). In reality, all TNB systems are non-Keplerian due to nonspherical shapes, possible presence of undetected system components, and/or solar perturbations. In this work, we focus on identifying candidates for detectable non-Keplerian motion based on sample of 45 well-characterized binaries. We use MultiMoon , a non-Keplerian Bayesian inference tool, to analyze published relative astrometry allowing for nonspherical shapes of each TNB system’s primary. We first reproduce the results of previous Keplerian fitting efforts with MultiMoon , which serves as a comparison for the non-Keplerian fits and confirms that these fits are not biased by the assumption of a Keplerian orbit. We unambiguously detect non-Keplerian motion in eight TNB systems across a range of primary radii, mutual orbit separations, and system masses. As a proof of concept for non-Keplerian fitting, we perform detailed fits for (66652) Borasisi-Pabu, possibly revealing a J _2 ≈ 0.44, implying Borasisi (and/or Pabu) may be a contact binary or an unresolved compact binary. However, full confirmation of this result will require new observations. This work begins the next generation of TNB analyses that go beyond the point mass assumption to provide unique and valuable information on the physical properties of TNBs with implications for their formation and evolution.

Recent observational surveys of the outer solar system provide evidence that Neptune's distant n :1 mean motion resonances may harbor relatively large reservoirs of trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs). In particular, the discovery of two securely classified 9:1 resonators, 2015 KE _172 and 2007 TC _434 , by the Outer Solar System Origins Survey is consistent with a population of order 10 ^4 such objects in the 9:1 resonance with absolute magnitude H _r < 8.66. This work investigates whether the long-term stability of such populations in Neptune’s n :1 resonances can be used to constrain the existence of distant 5–10 M _⊕ planets orbiting at hundreds of au. The existence of such a planet has been proposed to explain a reported clustering in the orbits of highly eccentric “extreme” trans-Neptunian objects (or eTNOs), although this hypothesis remains controversial. We engage in a focused computational case study of the 9:1 resonance, generating synthetic populations and integrating them for 1 Gyr in the presence of 81 different test planets with various masses, perihelion distances, eccentricities, and inclinations. While none of the tested planets are incompatible with the existence of 9:1 resonators, our integrations shed light on the character of the interaction between such planets and nearby n :1 resonances, and we use this knowledge to construct a simple heuristic method for determining whether or not a given planet could destabilize a given resonant population. We apply this method to the currently estimated properties of Planet 9, and find that a large primordial population in the 15:1 resonance (or beyond), if discovered in the future, could potentially constrain the existence of this planet.

We present here the DECam Ecliptic Exploration Project (DEEP), a 3 yr NOAO/NOIRLab Survey that was allocated 46.5 nights to discover and measure the properties of thousands of trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) to magnitudes as faint as VR ∼ 27 mag, corresponding to sizes as small as 20 km diameter. In this paper we present the science goals of this project, the experimental design of our survey, and a technical demonstration of our approach. The core of our project is “digital tracking,” in which all collected images are combined at a range of motion vectors to detect unknown TNOs that are fainter than the single exposure depth of VR ∼ 23 mag. Through this approach, we reach a depth that is approximately 2.5 mag fainter than the standard LSST “wide fast deep” nominal survey depth of 24.5 mag. DEEP will more than double the number of known TNOs with observational arcs of 24 hr or more, and increase by a factor of 10 or more the number of known small (

We present the methods and results from the discovery and photometric measurement of 26 bright VR > 24 trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) during the first year (2019–20) of the DECam Ecliptic Exploration Project (DEEP). The DEEP survey is an observational TNO survey with wide sky coverage, high sensitivity, and a fast photometric cadence. We apply a computer vision technique known as a progressive probabilistic Hough transform to identify linearly moving transient sources within DEEP photometric catalogs. After subsequent visual vetting, we provide a photometric and astrometric catalog of our TNOs. By modeling the partial lightcurve amplitude distribution of the DEEP TNOs using Monte Carlo techniques, we find our data to be most consistent with an average TNO axis ratio b / a < 0.5, implying a population dominated by non-spherical objects. Based on ellipsoidal gravitational stability arguments, we find our data to be consistent with a TNO population containing a high fraction of contact binaries or other extremely non-spherical objects. We also discuss our data as evidence that the expected binarity fraction of TNOs may be size-dependent.

We present the DECam Ecliptic Exploration Project (DEEP) survey strategy, including observing cadence for orbit determination, exposure times, field pointings and filter choices. The overall goal of the survey is to discover and characterize the orbits of a few thousand Trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) using the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) on the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory Blanco 4 m telescope. The experiment is designed to collect a very deep series of exposures totaling a few hours on sky for each of several 2.7 square degree DECam fields-of-view to achieve approximate depths of magnitude 26.2 using a wide V R filter that encompasses both the V and R bandpasses. In the first year, several nights were combined to achieve a sky area of about 34 square degrees. In subsequent years, the fields have been re-visited to allow TNOs to be tracked for orbit determination. When complete, DEEP will be the largest survey of the outer solar system ever undertaken in terms of newly discovered object numbers, and the most prolific at producing multiyear orbital information for the population of minor planets beyond Neptune at 30 au.

We present a detailed study of the observational biases of the DECam Ecliptic Exploration Project’s B1 data release and survey simulation software that enables direct statistical comparisons between models and our data. We inject a synthetic population of objects into the images, and then subsequently recover them in the same processing as our real detections. This enables us to characterize the survey’s completeness as a function of apparent magnitudes and on-sky rates of motion. We study the statistically optimal functional form for the magnitude, and develop a methodology that can estimate the magnitude and rate efficiencies for all survey’s pointing groups simultaneously. We have determined that our peak completeness is on average 80% in each pointing group, and our magnitude drops to 25% of this value at m _25 = 26.22. We describe the freely available survey simulation software and its methodology. We conclude by using it to infer that our effective search area for objects at 40 au is 14.8 deg ^2 , and that our lack of dynamically cold distant objects means that there at most 8 × 10 ^3 objects with 60 < a < 80 au and absolute magnitudes H ≤ 8.

We present the first set of trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) observed on multiple nights in data taken from the DECam Ecliptic Exploration Project. Of these 110 TNOs, 105 do not coincide with previously known TNOs and appear to be new discoveries. Each individual detection for our objects resulted from a digital tracking search at TNO rates of motion, using two-to-four-hour exposure sets, and the detections were subsequently linked across multiple observing seasons. This procedure allows us to find objects with magnitudes m _VR ≈ 26. The object discovery processing also included a comprehensive population of objects injected into the images, with a recovery and linking rate of at least 94%. The final orbits were obtained using a specialized orbit-fitting procedure that accounts for the positional errors derived from the digital tracking procedure. Our results include robust orbits and magnitudes for classical TNOs with absolute magnitudes H ∼ 10, as well as a dynamically detached object found at 76 au (semimajor axis a ≈ 77 au). We find a disagreement between our population of classical TNOs and the CFEPS-L7 three-component model for the Kuiper Belt.

We present new optical reflectance spectra of three potentially silicate-rich trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs). These spectra were obtained with the aim of confirming past hints and detections of λ ∼ 0.7 μ m absorption features associated with the presence of iron-bearing phyllosilicates. Our new spectrum of 120216 (2004 EW _95 ) presents clearly detected absorption features that are similar in shape to hydrated mineral absorption bands present in the spectra of aqueously altered outer main belt asteroids. Four new reflectance spectra of 208996 (2003 AZ _84 ) obtained at separate epochs all appear featureless, but they vary significantly in spectral gradient (between ∼3.5%/0.1 μ m and ∼8.5%/0.1 μ m) on a timescale consistent with this object’s nominal rotational period. We report the first four optical reflectance spectra of 90568 (2004 GV _9 ), finding them all to be featureless but consistent with colors previously reported for this object. We speculate that impacts are the only mechanism capable of delivering, excavating, or forming hydrated minerals at the surfaces of TNOs in detectable concentrations; as a result, any deposits of hydrated minerals on TNOs are predicted to be localized and associated with impact sites. Globally altered TNOs (as observationally suggested for 2004 EW _95 ) plausibly formed more easily at smaller heliocentric distances ( r _H < 15 au) before being transplanted into the current trans-Neptunian population.

We compute planar and three-dimensional retrograde periodic orbits in the vicinity of the restricted three-body problem (RTBP) with the Sun and Neptune as primaries and we concentrate on the dynamics of higher-order exterior mean motion resonances with Neptune. By using the circular planar model as the basic model, families of retrograde symmetric periodic orbits are computed at the 4/5, 7/9, 5/8 and 8/13 resonances. We determine the bifurcation points from the planar circular to the planar elliptic problem and we find all the corresponding families. In order to obtain a global view of the families of periodic orbits, the eccentricity of the primaries takes values in the whole interval 0 < e ′ < 1 . Then, we find all the possible vertical critical orbits (v.c.o) of the planar circular problem and we proceed to the three-dimensional circular restricted 3-body problem. In this model, retrograde periodic orbits are generated mainly from the retrograde v.c.o. Also, if we continue families of direct orbits for i > 90 ∘ , then we can obtain families of 3D symmetric retrograde periodic orbits. The linear stability is examined too. Stable periodic orbits are associated with phase space domains of resonant motion where TNOs can be captured. In order to study the phase space structure of the above resonances, we construct dynamical stability maps for the whole inclination interval ( 0 < i < 180 ∘ ) by using the well-known "MEGNO Chaos Indicator". Disks of low-mass bodies scattered by giant planets to large semimajor axis and constant periapsis orbits are vulnerable to a buckling instability. This instability exponentially grows orbital inclinations, raises periapsis distances, and coherently tilts orbits resulting in clustering of arguments of periapsis. The dynamically hot system is then susceptible to the formation of a lopsided mode. Here we show that the timescale of the buckling instability decreases as the radial surface density of the population becomes more centrally dense, i.e., steeper scattered disks buckle faster. Accounting for differential apsidal precession driven by giant planets, we find that ∼10 M _⊕ is sufficient for a primordial scattered disk in the trans-Neptunian region to have been unstable if ${dN}\propto {a}^{-2.5}{da}$ .

To date, rings are found around a Centaur (10199) Chariklo, trans-neptunian objects (TNOs) (136108) Haumea, and (50000) Quaoar. These discoveries suggest that asteroidal ring systems may be common, particularly in the outer solar system. Since collisions are a ubiquitous and fundamental evolutionary process throughout the solar system, we conjecture that asteroidal ring systems must have experienced close encounters with small objects as part of their evolutionary process. Here, we investigate the response of ring systems when they experience gravitational disturbance by a close encounter with another small object, by calculating the change in eccentricity and the fraction of lost ring particles. We find that a perturber needs to be as massive as or more massive than the ringed object, and needs to pass in the immediate vicinity of the ring in order to cause significant disruption. The change in eccentricity expected for Chariklo's inner ring and Quaoar's outer ring agrees with the analytical expression derived from the impulse approximation, while that for Haumea's ring agrees with the analytical expression called "exponential regime". If we define a lifetime of a ring as the mean time to experience disruptive close encounters that can raise the eccentricity of ring particles >0.1, the lifetime for ring systems around Chariklo, Haumea, and Quaoar are >104 Gyr. We conclude that ring systems around Chariklo, Haumea, and Quaoar are highly unlikely to suffer from close encounters with another small object even if those systems are as old as 4 Gyr. Close encounter with a small object may not be responsible for the finite eccentricity observed for Chariklo's ring system, although eccentricity of ring particles could be increased to ∼10−4 in 4 Gyr. We also find that the lifetime is shorter for smaller ringed objects, and it still exceeds 4 Gyr for km-sized ringed objects in the outer solar system. Therefore, regardless of the size of ringed objects, asteroidal ring systems in the outer solar system are unlikely to suffer severe damage by close encounter with a small object. On the other hand, the lifetime is estimated to be on the order of 100 Myr for km-sized asteroids and 10 Myr for 100 m-sized asteroids in the near-Earth region and the main belt. Much of the modern Kuiper belt is thought to be the result of Neptune's migration through a primordial belt of planetesimals, possibly interrupted by an instability amongst the giant planets. While most prior work has employed massless test particles to study this Kuiper belt formation process, we perform simulations here that include the gravitational effects of the primordial planetesimal belt consisting of ∼ 1 0 5 massive bodies. In our simulations, Neptune unlocks from resonance with the other giant planets and begins to migrate outward due to interactions with planetesimals before a planetary orbital instability is triggered, and afterward, residual Neptunian migration completes the formation of the modern Kuiper belt. Compared to past simulations using massless test particles, our present work exhibits a number of notable differences. First, Neptune's planetary resonance unlocking requires the Neptunian 3:2 mean motion resonance to sweep much of the primordial disk interior to 30 au prior to the giant planet instability. This generates a pre-instability population of planetesimals that is significantly lower in semimajor axis, eccentricity, and inclination than predicted by many prior models, and this effect persists after the instability. Second, direct scattering between Pluto-mass bodies and other small bodies removes material from Neptunian resonances significantly more efficiently than the resonant dropout resulting from small changes in Neptune's semimajor axis during scattering between Pluto-mass bodies and Neptune. Consequently, the primordial population of Pluto-mass bodies may be as few as ∼ 200 objects. Finally, our simulation end states display a wide variety of orbital distributions, and straightforward relationships between final bulk Kuiper belt properties and Neptune's migration or initial planetesimal properties largely elude us. In particular, we find that the rapid, stochastic planetary orbital evolution occurring during the giant planet instability can significantly alter final Kuiper belt properties such as its inclination dispersion and the prominence of resonant populations. This complicates efforts to use modern Kuiper belt properties to confidently constrain early solar system events and conditions, including planetary orbital migration and the primordial Kuiper belt's characteristics. • We run Kuiper belt formation simulations with Kuiper belt objects of realistic mass. • The giant planet instability adds a stochastic element to Kuiper belt formation. • It is thus more difficult to infer solar system pre-instability conditions. • Encounters between Kuiper belt objects limit long-term resonant capture with Neptune. • 200 to 1000 Pluto-mass bodies likely existed in the primordial outer solar system. In this paper we report on massive computer simulations aimed to clarify the formation of an Oort Cloud and the adjoining sednoid population during the earliest times of the solar system due to the perturbing effects of the Sun's birth aggregate, for which we use different embedded cluster models. We define the sednoid population to have semi-major axes between 100 and 1600 astronomical units, and it can be seen as the innermost extension of the Oort Cloud. By also restricting the orbits to perihelion distances exceeding 60 astronomical units, the sednoid population can be regarded as dynamically inert with respect to both planetary and Galactic influences. It includes the objects (90377) Sedna, 2012 VP 113 and (541132) Leleākūhonua. We start by creating 12 cluster models, using the NBODY6++GPU code, with three random realisations of four physically different models. In each of these we select six random solar template stars and equip those with a planetary system composed of Jupiter, Saturn and 4000 massless planetesimals representing a population of stray planetesimals in the Jupiter–Saturn zone with a total mass assumed to be about 20 Earth masses. From dynamical simulations of all these 72 variants of the early solar system including the cluster perturbations, we derive the total numbers and orbital characteristics of the sednoid and Oort Cloud populations, including the size distributions resulting from the limiting effects of solar nebula gas drag on extraction efficiency. We find that the predicted number of sednoids varies dramatically depending on the orbital evolution of the solar template star in the cluster. In general, numbers consistent with the existence of the observed sednoids is an expected outcome only for a birth aggregate with a strong central condensation and a relatively long lifetime of the residual gas, whereas other cluster models tend to fail to explain this. In the most successful, concentrated cluster models, we predict the existence of an as yet unseen population of at least 1 0 8 km-sized sednoids. However, we note that these cluster models produce an overheated inclination distribution at variance with the observed inclinations. Hence, we conclude that our study points to a possible, severe problem of the embedded cluster scenario in explaining the origin of the sednoids. The Oort Cloud predicted to originate in local, Jupiter–Saturn planetesimals by our simulations amounts to ∼ 10 % of the estimated, current size of the entire Oort Cloud. This shows that such comets, likely characterised by Earth-like D/H ratios, may be a minority though a significant one. Current research focuses on designing fast trajectories to the trans -Neptunian object (TNO) (90377) Sedna to study the surface and composition from a close range. Studying Sedna from a close distance may provide unique data about the earliest stages of the Solar System evolution, including the protoplanetary disc stage and related mechanisms. The trajectories to Sedna are determined considering flight time and the total characteristic velocity (ΔV) constraints. The time of flight for the analysis was limited to 20 years. The direct flight, the use of gravity assist manoeuvres near Venus, the Earth and the giant planets Jupiter and Neptune, and the flight with the Oberth manoeuvre near the Sun are considered. It is demonstrated that the use of flight scheme with ΔVEGA (ΔV and Earth Gravity Assist manoeuvre) and Jupiter-Neptune gravity assist leads to the lowest cost of ΔV≈6.13 km/s for launch in 2041. The maximum payload for schemes with ΔVEGA manoeuvre is 500 kg using Soyuz 2.1.b, 2000 kg using Proton-M and Delta IV Heavy and exceeds 12,000 kg using SLS. For schemes with only Jupiter gravity assist, payload mass is twice less than for ones with ΔVEGA manoeuvre. As a possible expansion of the mission to Sedna, it is proposed to send a small spacecraft to another TNO during the primary flight to Sedna. Five TNOs suitable for this scenario are found, three extreme TNOs 2012 VP 113 , (541132) Leleākūhonua (former 2015 TG 387), 2013 SY 99) and two classical Kuiper Belts objects: (90482) Orcus, (20000) Varuna. • The application of gravity assist manoeuvres for the flight to Sedna in 20 years is studied. • Fast routes to the dwarf planet Sedna have been designed • The energy characteristics of the flight to the transneptunian object (90377) Sedna are considered. • Expansion of missions to Jupiter, as well as to Neptune, by a small spacecraft to explore transneptunian objects is proposed [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The orientation and morphology of the bilobate, cold classical Kuiper belt object (486958) Arrokoth (formerly 2014 MU69) is consistent with a slow, tidal merger of a close binary. However, the discrepancy between Arrokoth's present‐day rotation (15.9 hr) and synchronous rotation for nominal cometary densities near ∼500 kg/m3 implies reduction (up to 30%) in post‐merger spin angular momentum. We investigate how collisions with dynamically cold and hot classical Kuiper belt objects might have affected Arrokoth's post‐merger spin. Using a dynamically equivalent triaxial ellipsoid, 5000 Monte Carlo simulations of 100 impacts each, consistent with Arrokoth's cratering record, were carried out. Starting from the assumption of critical, synchronous rotation for a given density, these simulations rarely reproduce Arrokoth's present spin period, unless its true density is near 250 kg/m3. We explore in greater depth the effects of formation of Arrokoth's largest crater (now officially named Sky, previously informally named Maryland). We adopt point‐source scaling and randomly select impact parameters that lead to the crater, using Arrokoth's full bilobate shape. Results from Sky's formation alone are similar to those considering a full range of impactor sizes, unless we adopt low cratering efficiency due to high porosity, which implies substantially larger Sky‐forming impactors. Overall, results imply that the probability of substantial angular momentum change due to impacts alone over Solar System history is unlikely, and spindown from a synchronous, tidal rotation rate to a 15.9‐hr period unlikely unless Arrokoth itself was and is a very low density object (∼250 kg/m3), though we cannot statistically rule out densities up to 400 kg/m3. Plain Language Summary: Both lobes of the cold classical Kuiper belt object Arrokoth were likely in a close spin‐synchronous orbit before they gently merged to form the bilobate body we see today. This spin‐synchronous orbital period depends on density, however, and Arrokoth's observed spin period implies that it either has an extremely low density (much lower than typical cometary values) or underwent significant despinning after the merger. Here we study the spin‐altering effects of impacts by other, small Kuiper belt objects over time and address the likelihood of the required despinning by impacts, with implications for Arrokoth's bulk density. We use a Monte Carlo impact simulation to investigate Arrokoth's rotational response over its impact history, with special attention to the largest recognized crater (Sky). Our results indicate that: (a) Small impacts alone are not capable of altering Arrokoth's spin by much; (b) The likelihood of geophysically significant impact despinning on Arrokoth is low, if it has a typical cometary density of ∼500 kg m−3; (c) Arrokoth's bulk density may actually be quite low, ∼250 kg m−3, implying substantial porosity. We present an approach for the inclusion of nonspherical constituents in high-resolution N -body discrete element method (DEM) simulations. We use aggregates composed of bonded spheres to model nonspherical components. Though the method may be applied more generally, we detail our implementation in the existing N -body code pkdgrav . It has long been acknowledged that nonspherical grains confer additional shear strength and resistance to flow when compared with spheres. As a result, we expect that rubble-pile asteroids will also exhibit these properties and may behave differently than comparable rubble piles composed of idealized spheres. Since spherical particles avoid some significant technical challenges, most DEM gravity codes have used only spherical particles or have been confined to relatively low resolutions. We also discuss the work that has gone into improving performance with nonspherical grains, building on pkdgrav 's existing leading-edge computational efficiency among DEM gravity codes. This allows for the addition of nonspherical shapes while maintaining the efficiencies afforded by pkdgrav 's tree implementation and parallelization. As a test, we simulated the gravitational collapse of 25,000 nonspherical bodies in parallel. In this case, the efficiency improvements allowed for an increase in speed by nearly a factor of 3 when compared with the naive implementation. Without these enhancements, large runs with nonspherical components would remain prohibitively expensive. Finally, we present the results of several small-scale tests: spin-up due to the YORP effect, tidal encounters, and the Brazil nut effect. In all cases, we find that the inclusion of nonspherical constituents has a measurable impact on simulation outcomes.

We report the methods of and initial scientific inferences from the extraction of precision photometric information for the >800 trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) discovered in the images of the Dark Energy Survey (DES). Scene-modeling photometry is used to obtain shot-noise-limited flux measures for each exposure of each TNO, with background sources subtracted. Comparison of double-source fits to the pixel data with single-source fits are used to identify and characterize two binary TNO systems. A Markov Chain Monte Carlo method samples the joint likelihood of the intrinsic colors of each source as well as the amplitude of its flux variation, given the time series of multiband flux measurements and their uncertainties. A catalog of these colors and light-curve amplitudes A is included with this publication. We show how to assign a likelihood to the distribution q ( A ) of light-curve amplitudes in any subpopulation. Using this method, we find decisive evidence (i.e., evidence ratio

The distribution of surface classes of resonant trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) provides constraints on the protoplanetesimal disk and giant planet migration. To better understand the surfaces of TNOs, the Colours of the Outer Solar System Origins Survey acquired multiband photometry of 102 TNOs and found that the surfaces of TNOs can be well described by two surface classifications: BrightIR and FaintIR. These classifications both include optically red members and are differentiated predominantly based on whether their near-infrared spectral slope is similar to their optical spectral slope. The vast majority of cold classical TNOs, with dynamically quiescent orbits, have the FaintIR surface classification, and we infer that TNOs in other dynamical classifications with FaintIR surfaces share a common origin with the cold classical TNOs. Comparison between the resonant populations and the possible parent populations of cold classical and dynamically excited TNOs reveal that the 3:2 has minimal contributions from the FaintIR class, which could be explained by the ν _8 secular resonance clearing the region near the 3:2 before any sweeping capture occurred. Conversely, the fraction of FaintIR objects in the 4:3 resonance, 2:1 resonance, and the resonances within the cold classical belt suggest that the FaintIR surface formed in the protoplanetary disk between ≳34.6 and ≲47 au, though the outer bound depends on the degree of resonance sweeping during migration. The presence and absence of the FaintIR surfaces in Neptune’s resonances provides critical constraints for the history of Neptune’s migration, the evolution of the ν _8 , and the surface class distribution in the initial planetesimal disk.

We report on a study of the mounds that dominate the appearance of Kuiper Belt Object (486958) Arrokoth's larger lobe, named Wenu. We compare the geological context of these mounds and measure and intercompare their shapes, sizes/orientations, reflectance, and colors. We find the mounds are broadly self-similar in many respects and interpret them as the original building blocks of Arrokoth. It remains unclear why these building blocks are so similar in size—and this represents a new constraint and challenge for solar system formation models. We then discuss the implications of this interpretation.

The tumultuous early era of outer solar system evolution culminated when Neptune migrated across the primordial Kuiper Belt (PKB) and triggered a dynamical instability among the giant planets. This event led to the ejection of ∼99.9% of the PKB (here called the destabilized population), heavy bombardment of the giant planet satellites, and the capture of Jupiter’s Trojans. While this scenario has been widely tested using dynamical models, there have been fewer investigations into how the PKB, its destabilized population, and the Trojans experienced collisional evolution. Here we examined this issue for all three populations with the code Boulder. Our constraints included the size–frequency distributions (SFDs) of the Trojan asteroids and craters on the giant planet satellites. Using this combination, we solved for the unknown disruption law affecting bodies in these populations. The weakest ones, from an impact energy per mass perspective, were diameter D ∼ 20 m. Overall, collisional evolution produces a power-law-like shape for multikilometer Trojans and a wavy-shaped SFD in the PKB and destabilized populations. The latter can explain (i) the shapes of the ancient and younger crater SFDs observed on the giant planet satellites, (ii) the shapes of the Jupiter family and long-period comet SFDs, which experienced different degrees of collision evolution, and (iii) the present-day impact frequency of superbolides on Jupiter and smaller projectiles on Saturn’s rings. Our model results also indicate that many observed comets, the majority which are D < 10 km, are likely to be gravitational aggregates formed by large-scale collision events.

In the present-day Kuiper Belt, the number of compositional classes and the orbital distributions of these classes hold important cosmogonic implications for the solar system. The Colours of the Outer Solar System Origins Survey (Col-OSSOS) recently showed that the observed color distribution of small ( H ⪆ 6) trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) can be accounted for by the existence of only two composition classes, named BrightIR and FaintIR, where the range of colors in each class can be modeled as mixtures of two material end-members. Here, we combine the high-precision photometric measurements of Col-OSSOS with those of previous surveys to investigate the orbital distribution of the two color classes and reinterpret the known color–inclination correlation of TNOs in the context of the BrightIR/FaintIR taxonomy. In addition to confirming the previously reported distinct orbital distributions of these classes, we identify a trend of increasing orbital inclinations toward the bluer end of the optical and near-infrared color distribution of BrightIR objects. Using the output of numerical simulations investigating the orbital evolution of TNOs during their scattering phase with Neptune, we show that this trend could reflect a composition gradient in the early protoplanetary disk, in the range of heliocentric distances over which TNOs from the BrightIR class accreted. However, tensions between this interpretation and the existence of blue contaminants among cold classical TNOs, and possible alternative origins for the detected correlation, currently bear uncertainty on our proposed interpretation.

The orbits of trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) can indicate the existence of an undiscovered planet in the outer solar system. Here we used N -body computer simulations to investigate the effects of a hypothetical Kuiper Belt planet (KBP) on the orbital structure of TNOs in the distant Kuiper Belt beyond ∼50 au. We used observations to constrain model results, including the well-characterized Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS). We determined that an Earth-like planet ( m ∼ 1.5–3 M _⊕ ) located on a distant (semimajor axis a ∼ 250–500 au, perihelion q ∼ 200 au) and inclined ( i ∼ 30°) orbit can explain three fundamental properties of the distant Kuiper Belt: a prominent population of TNOs with orbits beyond Neptune’s gravitational influence (i.e., detached objects with q > 40 au), a significant population of high- i objects ( i > 45°), and the existence of some extreme objects with peculiar orbits (e.g., Sedna). Furthermore, the proposed KBP is compatible with the existence of identified gigayear-stable TNOs in the 2:1, 5:2, 3:1, 4:1, 5:1, and 6:1 Neptunian mean motion resonances. These stable populations are often neglected in other studies. We predict the existence of an Earth-like planet and several TNOs on peculiar orbits in the outer solar system, which can serve as observationally testable signatures of the putative planet’s perturbations.

The detached trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) are those with semimajor axes beyond the 2:1 resonance with Neptune that are neither resonant nor scattering. Using the detached sample from the Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS) telescopic survey, we produce the first studies of their orbital distribution based on matching the orbits and numbers of the known TNOs after accounting for survey biases. We show that the detached TNO perihelion ( q ) distribution cannot be uniform but is instead better matched by two uniform components with a break near q ≈ 40 au. We produce parametric two-component models that are not rejectable by the OSSOS data set and estimate that there are 36,000 ${}_{-9000}^{+12,000}$ detached TNOs with absolute magnitudes H _r < 8.66 ( D ≳ 100 km) and semimajor axes 48 au < a < 250 au (95% confidence limits). Although we believe that these heuristic two-parameter models yield a correct population estimate, we then use the same methods to show that the perihelion distribution of a detached disk created by a simulated rogue planet matches the q distribution even better, suggesting that the temporary presence of other planets in the early solar system is a promising model to create today’s large semimajor axis TNO population. This cosmogonic simulation results in a detached TNO population estimate of 48,000 ${}_{-12,000}^{+15,000}$ . Because this illustrates how difficult-to-detect q > 50 au objects are likely present, we conclude that there are (5 ± 2) × 10 ^4 dynamically detached TNOs, roughly twice as many as in the entire trans-Neptunian hot main belt.

From the first phase of the high-cadence Formation of the Outer Solar System: an Icy Legacy (FOSSIL) survey, we analyzed lightcurves, ranging from one to four nights in length, of 371 trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) for periodicity. We found 29 TNOs with periodic lightcurves, one of which is a good candidate for a close/contact binary. Another of the periodic FOSSIL TNOs could potentially have the fastest of all known TNO spin rates, with a period of 1.3 hr. We do not have total confidence in the period and thus plan to obtain a more detailed lightcurve for confirmation. The periodic TNOs have an average rotation period of 11.2 hr, close to the value obtained by Alexandersen et al., which had similar cadence, but different from other surveys. In regards to contention in the literature about whether smaller TNOs are more irregular in shape and thus have larger lightcurve amplitudes, we found that there is a weak correlation between absolute magnitude and lightcurve amplitude in a subset of 194 FOSSIL TNOs, even when using the more appropriate brightest (minimum) absolute magnitude instead of the time-averaged value.

We combine photometry of Eris from a 6 month campaign on the Palomar 60 inch telescope in 2015, a 1 month Hubble Space Telescope WFC3 campaign in 2018, and Dark Energy Survey data spanning 2013–2018 to determine a light curve of definitive period 15.771 ± 0.008 days (1 σ formal uncertainties), with nearly sinusoidal shape and peak-to-peak flux variation of 3%. This is consistent at part-per-thousand precision with the P = 15.785 90 ± 0.00005 day sidereal period of Dysnomia’s orbit around Eris, strengthening the recent detection of synchronous rotation of Eris by Szakáts et al. with independent data. Photometry from Gaia are consistent with the same light curve. We detect a slope of 0.05 ± 0.01 mag per degree of Eris’s brightness with respect to illumination phase averaged across g , V , and r bands, intermediate between Pluto’s and Charon’s values. Variations of 0.3 mag are detected in Dysnomia’s brightness, plausibly consistent with a double-peaked light curve at the synchronous period. The synchronous rotation of Eris is consistent with simple tidal models initiated with a giant-impact origin of the binary, but is difficult to reconcile with gravitational capture of Dysnomia by Eris. The high albedo contrast between Eris and Dysnomia remains unexplained in the giant-impact scenario.

We calculate the upper bounds of the population of theoretically stable Centaur orbits between Uranus and Neptune. These small bodies are on low-eccentricity, low-inclination orbits in two specific bands of semimajor axis, centered at ∼24.6 and ∼25.6 au. They exhibit unusually long Gyr-stable lifetimes in previously published numerical integrations, orders of magnitude longer than that of a typical Centaur. Despite the increased breadth and depth of recent Solar System surveys, no such objects have been found. Using the Outer Solar System Origins Survey simulator to calculate the detection efficiency for these objects in an ensemble of fully characterized surveys, we determine that a population of 72 stable Centaurs with absolute magnitude H _r ≤ 10 (95% confidence upper limit) could remain undetected. The upcoming Legacy Survey of Space and Time will be able to detect this entire intrinsic population, due to its complete coverage of the ecliptic plane. If detected, these objects will be interesting dynamically accessible mission targets—especially as comparison of the stable Centaur orbital phase space to the outcomes of several modern planetary migration simulations suggests that these objects could be close to primordial in nature.

The Vera C. Rubin Observatory is expected to start the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) in early to mid-2025. This multiband wide-field synoptic survey will transform our view of the solar system, with the discovery and monitoring of over five million small bodies. The final survey strategy chosen for LSST has direct implications on the discoverability and characterization of solar system minor planets and passing interstellar objects. Creating an inventory of the solar system is one of the four main LSST science drivers. The LSST observing cadence is a complex optimization problem that must balance the priorities and needs of all the key LSST science areas. To design the best LSST survey strategy, a series of operation simulations using the Rubin Observatory scheduler have been generated to explore the various options for tuning observing parameters and prioritizations. We explore the impact of the various simulated LSST observing strategies on studying the solar system’s small body reservoirs. We examine what are the best observing scenarios and review what are the important considerations for maximizing LSST solar system science. In general, most of the LSST cadence simulations produce ±5% or less variations in our chosen key metrics, but a subset of the simulations significantly hinder science returns with much larger losses in the discovery and light-curve metrics.

The Colors of the Outer Solar System Origins Survey (Col-OSSOS) has gathered a high-quality, near-simultaneous, and brightness-complete sample of ( g − r ) and ( r − J ) colors for 102 Kuiper Belt objects (KBOs) with ( u − g ) and ( r − z ) gathered for some. We present the current state of the survey and data analysis. Recognizing that the optical colors of most icy bodies broadly follow the reddening curve, we present a new projection of the optical−near-IR (NIR) colors, which rectifies the main nonlinear features in the optical−NIR along the ordinates. We find evidence for a bifurcation in the projected colors that presents itself as a diagonal empty region in the optical−NIR. A reanalysis of past color surveys reveals the same bifurcation. We interpret this as evidence for two separate surface classes: the BrightIR class spans the full range of optical colors and broadly follows the reddening curve, while the FaintIR objects are limited in optical color and are less bright in the NIR than the BrightIR objects. We present a two-class model. Objects in each class consist of a mix of separate blue and red materials and span a broad range in color. Spectra are modeled as linear optical and NIR spectra with different slopes that intersect at some transition wavelength. The underlying spectral properties of the two classes reproduce the main observed structures in the UV−optical−NIR color space (0.4 μ m ≲ λ ≲ 1.4 μ m), including the bifurcation observed in the Col-OSSOS and H/WTSOSS data sets, including the tendency for cold classical KBOs to have lower ( r − z ) colors than excited objects, and the well-known bimodal optical color distribution.

Using Fisher information matrices, we forecast the uncertainties σ _M on the measurement of a “Planet X” at heliocentric distance d _X via its tidal gravitational field’s action on the known planets. Using planetary measurements currently in hand, including ranging from the Juno, Cassini, and Mars-orbiting spacecraft, we forecast a median uncertainty (over all sky positions) of ${\sigma }_{M}=0.22\,{M}_{\oplus }{({d}_{x}/400{\rm{au}})}^{3}.$ A 5 σ detection of a 5 M _⊕ Planet X at d _X = 400 au should be possible over the full sky but over only 5% of the sky at d _X = 800 au. The gravity of an undiscovered Earth- or Mars-mass object should be detectable over 90% of the sky to a distance of 260 or 120 au, respectively. Upcoming Mars ranging improves these limits only slightly. We also investigate the power of high-precision astrometry of ≈8000 Jovian Trojans over the 2023–2035 period from the upcoming Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). We find that the dominant systematic errors in optical Trojan astrometry (photocenter motion, nongravitational forces, and differential chromatic refraction) can be solved internally with minimal loss of information. The Trojan data allow cross-checks with Juno/Cassini/Mars ranging, but do not significantly improve the best achievable σ _M values until they are ≳10× more accurate than expected from LSST. The ultimate limiting factor in searches for a Planet X tidal field is confusion with the tidal field created by the fluctuating quadrupole moment of the Kuiper Belt as its members orbit. This background will not, however, become the dominant source of uncertainty until the data get substantially better than they are today.

The perihelion of the trans-Neptunian object (TNO) 2009 MS9 brings it close to the distance where some long-period comets are seen to become active. Knowing this, and the fact that this object appears to brighten in excess of its predicted nucleus brightness, suggests that 2009 MS9 has a delayed onset of activity brought on by the sublimation of a species more volatile than water. In this paper, we characterize 2009 MS9's physical properties and investigate potential outgassing through composite images, sublimation models, and measurements of spectral reflectivity. We find that deep composite images of the object at various epochs along its orbit show no evidence of dust yet place sensitive limits to the dust production. We estimate the nucleus radius to be 11.5 ± 3.5 km using thermal IR modeling from NEOWISE data and use this and data pre-perihelion to estimate a geometric albedo of 0.25. We compare a CO sublimation activity model to its post-perihelion heliocentric light curve and find that these data support an active fractional area of 5 × 10 ^−6 assuming 2 μ m–sized grains and other typical comet parameters. The spectral reflectivity of the surface materials obtained with the Gemini Observatory and CFHT at different epochs shows a reddening spectral slope. We compare the physical properties of 2009 MS9 to both TNO and comet populations and speculate that 2009 MS9's reddening may be due to the buildup of a dust mantle on the surface and could be an explanation of why TNOs exhibit a color bimodality.

The K2 mission of the Kepler Space Telescope allowed the observations of light curves of small solar system bodies throughout the whole solar system. In this paper, we present the results of a collection of K2 trans-Neptunian object observations between campaigns C03 (2014 November–2015 February) and C19 (2018 August–September), which includes 66 targets. Due to the faintness of our targets, the detectability rate of a light-curve period is ∼56%, notably lower than in the case of other small-body populations, like Hildas or Jovian Trojans. We managed to obtain light-curve periods with an acceptable confidence for 37 targets; the majority of these cases are new identifications. We were able to give light-curve amplitude upper limits for the other 29 targets. Several of the newly detected light-curve periods are longer than ∼24 hr, in many cases close to ∼80 hr; i.e., these targets are slow rotators. This relative abundance of slowly rotating objects is similar to that observed among Hildas, Jovian Trojans, and Centaurs in the K2 mission, as well as among main belt asteroids measured with the TESS space telescope. Trans-Neptunian objects show notably higher light-curve amplitudes at large ( D ≳ 300 km) sizes than found among large main belt asteroids, in contrast to the general expectation that due to their lower compressive strength, they reach hydrostatic equilibrium at smaller sizes than their inner solar system counterparts.

The dynamical features of a massive disk of distant trans-Neptunian objects are considered in the model of the formation of small bodies in the Hill region of a giant gas-dust clump that arose as a result of gravitational instability and fragmentation of the protoplanetary disk. The dynamical evolution of the orbits of small bodies under the action of gravitational perturbations from the outer planets and self-gravity of the disk has been studied for a time interval of the order of a billion years. It is shown that the secular effects of the gravitational influence of a massive disk of small bodies lead to an increase in the eccentricities of the orbits of individual objects. The result of this dynamical behavior is the creation of a flux of small bodies coming close to the orbit of Neptune. The change in the number of objects surviving in the observable region of distant trans-Neptunian objects (the region of orbits with perihelion distances of 40 < q < 80 AU and semimajor axes 150 < a < 1000 AU), over time depends on the initial mass of the disk. For disks with masses exceeding several Earth masses, there is a tendency to a decrease in the number of distant trans-Neptunian objects surviving in the observable region after evolution for a time interval of the order of the age of the Solar System, with an increase in the initial mass. On the other hand, for most objects, orbital eccentricities decrease under the influence of the self-gravity of the disk.
