Background: Studies have shown the importance of metabolic factors like BMI, waist circumference, and lipid profile in predicting knee osteoarthritis severity. However, their predictive ability in knee osteoarthritis patients with metabolic syndrome still needs to be explored. Objectives: Evaluate the predictive ability of Body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, and triglyceride/ High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) ratio in determining the severity of knee osteoarthritis in patients with metabolic syndrome. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study at Ho Chi Minh City Hospital for Rehabilitation and Professional Diseases from January 2023 to January 2024 included 697 patients meeting ACR 1991 and NCEP-ATP III criteria for knee osteoarthritis and metabolic syndrome, respectively. Logistic regression analyzed the predictive ability of BMI, waist circumference, and triglyceride/HDL-C ratios. Six hundred ninety-seven patients were divided into two groups: severe and non-severe knee osteoarthritis. The criteria for severity were defined as the presence of both: (1) Kellgren-Lawrence grade 3 or higher on knee radiographs and (2) moderate or higher knee pain. Two models were constructed to analyze the predictive ability of severe knee osteoarthritis. Model 1 included univariate factors, while Model 2 incorporated multivariate models. Results: Among the 697 patients who participated in the study, the average age was 58.7 ± 12.1 years, and females accounted for 71.3 %. The mean BMI and waist circumference were 24.8 ± 2.0 kg/m2 and 86.2 ± 6.0 cm, respectively. Abstract Background Dengue virus serotypes (DENV-1 to -4) can be transmitted vertically in Aedes aegpti mosquitoes. Whether infection with the wMel strain of the endosymbiont Wolbachia can reduce the incidence of vertical transmission of DENV from infected females to their offspring is not well understood. Methods A laboratory colony of Vietnamese Ae. aegypti, both with and without wMel infection, were infected with DENV-1 by intrathoracic injection (IT) to estimate the rate of vertical transmission (VT) of the virus. VT in the DENV-infected mosquitoes was calculated via the infection rate estimation from mosquito pool data using maximum likelihood estimation (MLE). Results In 6047 F1 Vietnamese wild-type Ae. aegypti, the MLE of DENV-1 infection was 1.49 per 1000 mosquitoes (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.73–2.74). In 5500 wMel-infected Ae. aegypti, the MLE infection rate was 0 (95% CI 0–0.69). The VT rates between mosquito lines showed a statistically significant difference. Conclusions The results reinforce the view that VT is a rare event in wild-type mosquitoes and that infection with wMel is effective in reducing VT. Graphical Abstract

Abstract Background Antenatal counseling for parents in the setting of expected preterm delivery is an important component of pediatric training. However, healthcare professionals receive a variable amount and quality of formal training. This study evaluated and discussed validity of a practical tool to assess antenatal counseling skills and provide evaluative feedback: the Antenatal Counseling Milestones Scale (ACoMS). Methods Experts in antenatal counseling developed an anchored milestone-based tool to evaluate observable skills. Study participants with a range of antenatal counseling skills were recruited to participate in simulation of counseling sessions in person or via video with standardized patient actors presenting with preterm labor at 23 weeks’ gestation. Two faculty observers scored each session independently using the ACoMS. Participants completed an ACoMS self-assessment, demographic, and feedback survey. Validity was measured with weighted kappas for inter-rater agreement, Kruskal–Wallis and Dunn’s tests for milestone levels between degrees of expertise in counseling, and cronbach’s alpha for item consistency. Results Forty-two participants completed observed counseling sessions. Of the 17 items included in the tool, 15 items were statistically significant with scores scaling with level of training. A majority of elements had fair-moderate agreement between raters, and there was high internal consistency amongst all items. Conclusion This study demonstrates that the internal structure of the ACoMS rubric has greater than fair inter-rater reliability and high internal consistency amongst items. Content validity is supported by the scale’s ability to discern level of training. Application of the ACoMS to clinical encounters is needed to determine utility in clinical practice.

Motivation plays an essential part in learning, especially in second language acquisition (SLA). This paper investigates the learning motivation of Vietnamese economics-related majors studying English as a Foreign Language (EFL), utilizing Dornyei’s (2005) L2 motivational self-system as the theoretical framework. The subjects were 236 first-year and 99 second-year students. A mixed method research design with both quantitative and qualitative approaches was employed. The 6-point scale questionnaire was adapted from Dörnyei’s (2005, 2009), including 24 items to explore students’ Ideal L2 Self, the Ought-to L2 Self, the students’ attitudes and their effort in learning English. The quantitative data were analyzed with SPSS software for Mean, Standard Deviation, and correlations. The open-ended section and focus group interview probed further into the students’ motivation, influencing factors, as well as the student recommendations for stakeholders in order to enhance their motivation to learn English. The study proposes some implications for EFL instructors, curriculum developers, and administrators to promote students’ motivation in English learning.

Abstract Background Dengue viruses (DENV) can be transmitted from an adult female Aedes aegypti mosquito through the germ line to the progeny; however, there is uncertainty if this occurs at a frequency that is epidemiologically significant. We measured vertical transmission of DENV from field-reared Ae. aegypti to their F1 progeny after feeding upon blood from dengue patients. We also examined the transmission potential of F1 females. Methods We examined the frequency of vertical transmission in field-reared mosquitoes, who fed upon blood from acutely viremic dengue patients, and the capacity for vertically infected females to subsequently transmit virus horizontally, in two sets of experiments: (i) compared vertical transmission frequency of field-reared Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus, in individual progeny; and (ii) in pooled progeny derived from field- and laboratory-reared Ae. aegypti. Results Of 41 DENV-infected and isofemaled females who laid eggs, only a single female (2.43%) transmitted virus to one of the F1 progeny, but this F1 female did not have detectable virus in the saliva when 14 days-old. We complemented this initial study by testing for vertical transmission in another 460 field-reared females and > 900 laboratory-reared counterparts but failed to provide any further evidence of vertical virus transmission. Conclusions In summary, these results using field-reared mosquitoes and viremic blood from dengue cases suggest that vertical transmission is uncommon. Field-based studies that build on these observations are needed to better define the contribution of vertical DENV transmission to dengue epidemiology.

The use of automated feedback (AF) has been increasing in English writing courses for emergency remote education (ERE) due to the escalating COVID-19 pandemic crisis in Vietnam. The ERE English writing courses for in-service bachelor programs demanded an effective, fast, free, and user-friendly AF tool that does not require a login ID, which can help students to develop English writing skills and increase their motivation and self-learning ability. The main objectives of Vietnamese in-service students were to improve their English writing skills and update teaching methodologies that integrate technology. Although many studies emphasized the impact of AF tools in normal teaching contexts, relatively less research was conducted the use of AF tools among in-service students. This study examined the contribution of the Marking Mate AF to the improvement of the English writing skills of in-service learners in ERE writing classes. The participants were 82 in-service students in a Vietnamese public university. The dataset included English writing pre and posttest results collected during the first semester of academic year 2020-2021. The mean scores (standard deviation) of these tests were used to benchmark the writing performance of students. A self-report survey was also conducted to investigate the attitude of students toward Marking Mate AF. The results demonstrated that the posttest score (8.739; SD = 0.8495) was higher than the pretest score (7.439; SD = 0.976). Students expressed favorable opinions toward the usefulness of Marking Mate. Based on the findings, the study discussed the pedagogical implications regarding the incorporation of AF in face-to-face and online classes.

Background: Long-term adherence is crucial for optimal treatment outcomes in chronic cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), especially throughout the COVID-19 wide-spreading periods, making patients with chronic CVDs vulnerable subjects. Aim: To investigate the relationship between the characteristics, beliefs about prescribed medication, COVID-19 prevention measures, and medication adherence among patients with chronic CVDs. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study of outpatients with chronic CVDs in Southern Vietnam. The specific parts regarding the Beliefs about Medicines Questionnaires (BMQ—Specific) and the General Medication Adherence Scale (GMAS) were applied to assess the beliefs about and adherence to medication. The implementation measures to prevent COVID-19 in patients were evaluated according to the 5K message (facemask, disinfection, distance, no gathering, and health declaration) of the Vietnam Ministry of Health. A multivariable logistic regression with the Backward elimination (Wald) method was used to identify the associated factors of medication adherence. Results: A slightly higher score in BMQ-Necessity compared to BMQ-Concerns was observed. A total of 40.7% of patients were recorded as having not adhered to their medications. Patients’ behavior was most frequently self-reported by explaining their non-adherence (34.7%). Statistical associations were found between rural living place, unemployment status, no or only one measure(s) of COVID-19 prevention application, and medication adherence. Conclusion: During the COVID-19 spreading stage, patients generally showed a positive belief about medication when they rated the importance of taking it higher than its side effects. The data analysis suggested that rather than patients’ beliefs, the clinicians should consider the patient factors, including living place, employment, and the number of epidemic preventive measures applied for guiding the target patients for improving medication adherence.

Achievement in language learning usually depends on both learners’ ability and attitude. If learners have negative attitude towards language learning, it can lead to some detrimental effects. The objectives of the study are to identify students’ attitude to English language learning, to find out the differences of English attitude by gender and by three specializations, and finally to draw some teaching implications at Tra Vinh university. The participants are 89 respondents from 3 main specializations: Office Administration, Tourism and Medical Physician. The questionnaire has 34 items concerning language attitudes in terms of behavioral, cognitive and emotional aspect of attitude. The results show that the students have average positive attitude towards English and interestingly there are no attitudinal differences by gender. However, the attitudes towards English of the three majors are not similar. Tourism students’ attitude is slightly lower than that of the other two specializations.

BackgroundSince the COVID-19 pandemic began, there have been concerns related to the preparedness of healthcare workers (HCWs). This study aimed to describe the level of awareness and preparedness of hospital HCWs at the time of the first wave.MethodsThis multinational, multicenter, cross-sectional survey was conducted among hospital HCWs from February to May 2020. We used a hierarchical logistic regression multivariate analysis to adjust the influence of variables based on awareness and preparedness. We then used association rule mining to identify relationships between HCW confidence in handling suspected COVID-19 patients and prior COVID-19 case-management training.ResultsWe surveyed 24,653 HCWs from 371 hospitals across 57 countries and received 17,302 responses from 70.2% HCWs overall. The median COVID-19 preparedness score was 11.0 (interquartile range [IQR] = 6.0-14.0) and the median awareness score was 29.6 (IQR = 26.6-32.6). HCWs at COVID-19 designated facilities with previous outbreak experience, or HCWs who were trained for dealing with the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak, had significantly higher levels of preparedness and awareness (pInterpretationThere was an unsurprising high level of awareness and preparedness among HCWs who participated in COVID-19 training courses. However, disparity existed along the lines of gender and type of HCW. It is unknown whether the difference in COVID-19 preparedness that we detected early in the pandemic may have translated into disproportionate SARS-CoV-2 burden of disease by gender or HCW type.

Abstract Background The Aedes (Stegomyia) albopictus subgroup includes 11 cryptic species of which Ae. albopictus is the most widely distributed. Its global expansion associated with a documented vector competence for several emerging arboviruses raise obvious concerns in the recently colonized regions. While several studies have provided important insights regarding medical importance of Ae. albopicus, the investigations of the other sibling species are scarce. In Asia, indigenous populations within the Ae. albopictus subgroup can be found in sympatry. In the present study, we aimed to describe and compare molecular, morphological and bacterial symbionts composition among sympatric individuals from the Ae. albopictus subgroup inhabiting a Vietnamese protected area. Results Based on morphological structure of the cibarial armarture, we identified a cryptic species in the forest park at Bù Gia Mập in the south-eastern region of Vietnam. Analysis of nuclear (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2) and mitochondrial (cox1, nad5) markers confirmed the divergence between the cryptic species and Ae. albopictus. Analysis of midgut bacterial microbiota revealed a strong similarity among the two species with a notable difference; contrary to Ae. albopictus, the cryptic species did not harbour any Wolbachia infection. Conclusions These results could reflect either a recent invasion of Wolbachia in Ae. albopictus or alternatively a loss of this symbiont in the cryptic species. We argue that neglected species of the Ae. albopictus subgroup are of main importance in order to estimate variation of host-symbionts interactions across evolution.

Finding a reliable method to predict soil metal bioavailability in aged soil continues to be one of the most important problems in contaminated soil chemistry. To investigate the bioavailability of metals aged in soils, we used roadside soils that had accumulated metals from vehicle emissions over a range of years. We collected topsoil (0–10 cm) samples representing new-, medium- and old-aged roadside soils and control site soil. These soils were studied to compare the ability of the diffusive gradients in thin films technique (DGT), soil water extraction, CaCl2 extraction, total metal concentrations and optimised linear models to predict metal bioavailability in wheat plants. The response time for the release of metals and the effect on metal bioavailability in field aged soils was also studied. The DGT, and extractable metals such as CaCl2 extractable and soil solution metals in soil, were not well correlated with metal concentrations in wheat shoots. In comparison, the strongest relationships with concentrations in wheat shoots were found for Ni and Zn total metal concentrations in soil (e.g., Ni r = 0.750, p = 0.005 and Zn r = 0.833, p = 0.001); the correlations were still low, suggesting that total metal concentrations were also not a robust measure of bioavailability. Optimised linear models incorporating soil physiochemical properties and metal extracts together with road age as measure of exposure time, demonstrated a very strong relationship for Mn R2 = 0.936; Ni R2 = 0.936 and Zn R2 = 0.931. While all the models developed were dependent on total soil metal concentrations, models developed for Mn and Zn clearly demonstrated the effect of road age on metal bioavailability. Therefore, the optimised linear models developed have the potential for robustly predicting bioavailable metal concentrations in field soils where the metals have aged in situ. The intrinsic rate of release of metals increased for Mn (R2 = 0.617, p = 0.002) and decreased for Cd (R2 = 0.456, p = 0.096), Cu (R2 = 0.560, p = 0.083) and Zn (R2 =0.578, p = 0.072). Nickel did not show any relationship between dissociation time (Tc) and road age. Roadside soil pH was likely to be the key parameter controlling metal aging in roadside soil.

Background/Objectives: The prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is increasing at an alarming rate worldwide. Delayed management can lead to adverse composite outcomes for both mother and her offspring. To our knowledge, the clinical association between glycemic parameters and the results of the non-pharmacological GDM approach remains limited; thus, this study aimed to address this important clinical issue in the literature. Methods: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study of 174 Vietnamese pregnant women with the positive oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) for a high fasting glycemic parameter at Hung Vuong Hospital from 04/2022 to 07/2022. This study aimed to evaluate the success rate of GDM with an elevated index of fasting glycemic concentration which was managed after 2 weeks of a dietary regimen combined with adequate physical activities and to reveal its related factors. Results: Out of 174 singleton pregnancies that met the inclusion criteria, 103 GDM pregnant women were successfully managed after 2 weeks of monitoring (59.2%; 95% confidence intervals (CI): 51.9–66.5). The study revealed a fair correlation between the corresponding test of blood glucose at OGTT and after 2 weeks of GDM management (r = 0.270–0.290, p < 0.0001). The GDM pregnant women with an elevated fasting glycemic parameter and with any of elevated 1 h or 2 h blood glucose levels and in cases of three elevated glycemic parameters (fasting, 1 h, and 2 h blood glucose at the initial results of OGTT) reduced the success rate of glycemic control to 56.5%, 49.2%, respectively, compared to the group with solely a high fasting index of blood glucose (69.6%). The pregnant women who participated in high-intensity sports activities related to a two-fold increase in success rate compared with the group engaging in light and moderate-intensity physical activity. Conclusions: The success rate of glycemic control in GDM women was highest in the group with solitary fasting hyperglycemia and lower in the contributory groups with two and three high parameters. The application of diet therapy plus physical activities among GDM pregnant women is potentially necessary to improve the effectiveness of treatment, minimize adverse pregnancy outcomes, and reduce substantially the hospitalization rate.
