2. Modified powder of Corchorus capsularisas a new adsorbent for removal of tetracycline group antibiotic from water

Abstract

This study prepared a novel adsorbent from Corchorus capsularismodified powder for the removal of the tetracycline group (tetracycline ‐TC, oxytetracycline ‐OTC, chlortetracycline ‐CTC) in aqueous solution. Corchorus capsularispowder was pre‐treated with 15% sodium hydroxide (COC), then reformed by a mixture of 0.15 mol L−1sodium bisulfide (SB) and 0.2 mol L−1ammonium peroxydisulfate (APS). This adsorbent was embedded with monoacrylamide (AM) at ratio AM/COC = 1/1 at 60 °C for 2.5 h. After modification with AM (BTA), the surface area of the adsorbents increased from 1.53 to 2.79 m2g−1, while the pore size of the adsorbents decreased from 36.95 to 11.85 nm. The study also investigated the effects of pH, adsorbent dose and temperature on the adsorptive removal process. Tetracycline concentrations were determined using liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS). The kinetics and isotherms of adsorption performance were examined using a variety of models, including pseudo‐first‐order kinetic (PFO), pseudo‐second‐order kinetic (PSO), Freundlich, Langmuir, and Dubinin–Radushkevich isotherms (DRM). The experimental data fitted very well with the pseudo‐second‐order kinetic model. The maximum adsorption bulks of TC, OTC, CTC following Langmuir isotherm model were 1.25, 0.83, 1.43 mg g−1, respectively. The adsorption constants Kpof TC, OTC, and CTC from the Freundlich isotherm model were 15.36, 21.80, and 22.08 mg1−nLng−1, respectively. The mean free energy E (kJ mol−1) of TC, OTC, and CTC from DRM was 4.35, 4.20, and 4.57, respectively. The results indicated that modified Corchorus capsularispowder had significant potential as a new adsorbent material for removing antibiotics from aqueous solutions.

Abstract

A novel, rapid, and facile method for one-step sonoelectrochemical synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles (UEZ) was introduced in this study. The optimum operating parameters have been selected at a voltage of 7.5 V, KCl concentration of 0.5 M, and the reaction time of 60 min. The as-prepared UEZ were characterized by XRD, SEM, and HRTEM. It was found that the UEZ has a hexagonal wurtzite structure with high crystalline quality, good purity, a size range of 30–100 nm, and good photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue. This work provides a facile route for large-scale synthesizing ZnO nanoparticles via anodization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Nowadays, obesity has been becoming one of the most popular problems to the global health. Molecular design with the aid of computing method is an efficient and cost-saving solution in the initial research of new potential drugs for the treatment of obesity. This study focused on benzyl amino chalcone derivatives as they have a benzyl group that can mimic the hydrophobic effect of the long chain carbon of Orlistat, a drug used to treat obesity. Initially, 102 molecular structures were prepared and docked into the protein by using AutoDock Vina version 1.5.6. Fourteen structures having good docking scores were selected to synthesize using a Claisen-Schmidt reaction. Afterward, these synthesized chalcones were tested biological activity against pancreatic lipase by spectrophotometric determination at a wavelength of 405 nm, using p-nitro phenyl palmitate as the substrate. The co-crystallized ligand of pancreatic lipase enzyme was redocked into the enzyme and the RMSD was 1.4976 Å which showed the ligand and the protein preparation could regenerate the practical experiment. As the docking results, the binding affinities of top ten compounds varied from -8.6 and -10.2 kcal/mol. Biological testing resulted in 4 derivatives with IC50 >120 µM, 8 derivatives with 60 µM < IC50 < 120 µM and 2 derivatives with IC50 < 60 µM. In addition, the docking results also confirmed the key role of amino acid Ser152 in interacting with the ligands. The benzyl amino chalcone derivatives are required for further investigation to become a lead compound for anti-obesity drug discovery.

9. Ultrasonic-assisted synthesis of magnetic recyclable Fe 3 O 4 /rice husk biochar based photocatalysts for ciprofloxacin photodegradation in aqueous solution.

Abstract

In this work, a new facile one-spot method has been designed to fabricate a magnetic recyclable Fe 3 O 4 /rice husk biochar photocatalyst (FBP) for the removal of Ciprofloxacin (CIP) in aqueous solution. This method combines ultrasonic-assisted impregnation and precipitation, which can overcome the difficulties of long-time reactions, complex procedures, and extreme condition requirements. The successful fabrication of the Fe 3 O 4 /biochar material has been proven by a series of material characterization techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Raman, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). Moreover, the as-product FBP exhibited the excellent ability of photodegrading CIP and the possibility of magnetic recovery from the aqueous solution, suggesting a potential solution for removing antibiotic pollutants in environmental remediation., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)
