2. Accurate force field for molybdenum by machine learning large materials data

Abstract

In this work, we present a highly accurate spectral neighbor analysis potential (SNAP) model for molybdenum (Mo) developed through the rigorous application of machine learning techniques on large materials data sets. Despite Mo's importance as a structural metal, existing force fields for Mo based on the embedded atom and modified embedded atom methods do not provide satisfactory accuracy on many properties. We will show that by fitting to the energies, forces, and stress tensors of a large density functional theory (DFT)-computed dataset on a diverse set of Mo structures, a Mo SNAP model can be developed that achieves close to DFT accuracy in the prediction of a broad range of properties, including elastic constants, melting point, phonon spectra, surface energies, grain boundary energies, etc. We will outline a systematic model development process, which includes a rigorous approach to structural selection based on principal component analysis, as well as a differential evolution algorithm for optimizing the hyperparameters in the model fitting so that both the model error and the property prediction error can be simultaneously lowered. We expect that this newly developed Mo SNAP model will find broad applications in large and long-time scale simulations.

4. Evaluation of challenges to the ubiquitous nature of chromatography

Abstract

Packed bed chromatography is the workhorse of the majority of downstream purification processes used for the manufacture of biopharmaceutical therapeutics. This high dependence upon chromatography has lead to concerns being raised regarding the manufacturing costs and also the potential constraints on plant productivity imposed by packed bed processes, particularly in light of advances seen in upstream operations. This has not unsurprisingly generated a significant degree of discussion amongst the bioprocessing community on how best to deal with these challenges. Amongst the proposed strategies, is the adoption of what may be termed \alternative" bioseparation techniques, which may potentially offer higher processing capacities at a lower cost. In this study a Multi-Attribute Decision Making MADM) based framework was used to evaluate these bioseparation techniques being considered as potential alternatives to packed bed chromatography. This evaluation included consideration of a wide range of process characteristics, beyond just performance and cost related attributes, but also considering areas such as the ease of process development, operation and scalability. The use of this framework not only allows the most promising technologies to be identified, but manipulation of the non-deterministic outputs of this framework permitted indications to be obtained as to the most productive directions for further technology development. Using the indicators provided by this framework, experimental studies were carried out in order to study the performance of these most promising alternatives, when used as part of a whole downstream processing train. These studies yielded information upon the interactions between these different bioseparation technologies and allowed the impact on process productivity and process economy to be evaluated. The collective findings from this study reinforce the generally held opinion that none of these alternative bioseparation techniques can currently be considered the key to overcoming the challenges faced by downstream processing. Indeed evaluations of the techniques imply that the ubiquitous nature of packed bed chromatography is likely to remain for the foreseeable future. However the tools which have been developed allow for a rational explanation of what exact factors are the barriers to adoption for these techniques, and as a consequence provide guidance as to the areas in which future development is most required.

15. Case Report: Epidural anaesthesia in a patient with spina bifida and difficult airway.

Abstract

Introduction: This case report outlines a 38 week gestation, multigravida woman scheduled for elective caesarean section, with a history of spina bifida, associated neurological deficit, and a history of difficult intubation during her previous caesarean. This case describes successful anaesthesia for subsequent elective Caesarian section using an epidural technique with no associated complications. Case report: 36-year-old woman, G3P2, whose obstetric history included two prior emergency caesarean sections for IUGR and major placenta praevia. During her second caesarean, difficulty was encountered during intubation, where anaesthetists were able to obtain a view using the CMAC D-blade but difficulty feeding the endotracheal tube. She was seen at a tertiary hospital obstetric anaesthesia high risk clinic and both general anaesthesia (GA) and epidural options discussed. An MRI of her lumbosacral spine showed a low tethered cord, with the lowest margin of the cord at the mid-S2 level. On the day of surgery an epidural technique was agreed upon by the patient and anaesthetic team, after informed consent was obtained. After preparing the patient's back with antiseptic wash, and local anaesthesia was applied to skin, an 18gauge Touhy needle was used to locate the epidural space using a loss of resistance to saline technique. After single pass, the space was located at 5.5cm, and the catheter fed and secured. After negative aspiration of cerebrospinal fluid or blood was confirmed, a test dose of 0.2% Ropivacaine was injected via an epidural filter. Further increments of 5mL of 0.2% Ropivacaine + 2mcg/mL Fentanyl was used until adequate block was obtained to the T4 dermatome. A total of 15mL of solution provided adequate anaesthesia. Surgery was completed with no associated complications. 16. Case Report: Intubation using combined CMAC D-blade and fibreoptic bronchoscope, in a patient with known difficult intubation.

Abstract

Introduction: This case report describes an airway technique that requires two experienced Anaesthetic operators, which involves combined use of videolaryngoscope hyper-angulated blade (CMAC D-blade) and fibreoptic bronchoscope, with the patient anaesthetised. Such method was successfully used to intubate a patient with a known difficult airway. Case report: A 62-year-old woman was scheduled to undergo a hysteroscopy, dilatation & curettage for post-menopausal bleeding, at a small peripheral hospital. Two years earlier, the same procedure was abandoned due to inability to perform a spinal anaesthetic and subsequent failed supra-glottic and endotracheal intubation, with increasing ventilation difficulty. Although a view was readily obtained using a CMAC D-blade, the difficulty faced at time of intubation was in passing the tube through the glottis, despite use of multiple stylets, bougie and pre-formed bougies. Her bleeding had persisted in the coming years, and there was more urgency to to complete her surgery. The patient was woken up and surgery postponed. On the day of her rescheduled surgery, both spinal anaesthesia and intubation using awake techniques were declined by the patient. We opted for a two-experienced operator technique, using the CMAC D-blade to obtain the optimal view, and the second person operating the fibreoptic bronchoscope. After pre-oxygenation and induction of anaesthesia using Fentanyl, Propofol and Rocuronium, a view of the glottis was obtained by one operator using the CMAC D-blade videolaryngoscope. The second operator, using the fibreoptic bronchoscope with the endotracheal tube loaded on, passed the scope into the trachea, and the endotracheal tube subsequently passed over the scope and into the trachea. This proved to be a successful technique in gaining control of the airway in a patient who had previously been difficult to pass an endotracheal tube. Abstract

Triiodide/iodide (I3-/I-) redox couple-mediated solar cells, batteries, and electrochromic devices require highly efficient and stable electrocatalysts for I3- reduction reaction (IRR) to overcome performance limitations, whereas the widely used platinum (Pt) cathode for IRR has limitations of high price and unfavorable durability. In this work, we present a halogen element (chlorine) doping strategy to design low-cost perovskite-type electrocatalysts with enhanced IRR activity and stability. The dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) assembled by the LaFeO2.965-ÎCl0.035 cathode delivers an attractive power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 11.4% with a remarkable PCE enhancement factor of 23% compared with Pt, which is higher than most of the reported non-Pt DSSC cathodes. Attractively, LaFeO2.965-ÎCl0.035 displays superior IRR activity/stability and structural stability in the I3-/I--based electrolyte compared to pristine LaFeO3 because chlorine doping facilitates the creation of oxygen vacancies (active sites) and enhances surface acidity simultaneously. This study provides a new way for designing outstanding IRR electrocatalysts, which could be applied to many redox couple-mediated photo/electrochemical devices.

28. Data Descriptor: Surface energies of elemental crystals

Abstract

The surface energy is a fundamental property of the different facets of a crystal that is crucial to the understanding of various phenomena like surface segregation, roughening, catalytic activity, and the crystal's equilibrium shape. Such surface phenomena are especially important at the nanoscale, where the large surface area to volume ratios lead to properties that are significantly different from the bulk. In this work, we present the largest database of calculated surface energies for elemental crystals to date. This database contains the surface energies of more than 100 polymorphs of about 70 elements, up to a maximum Miller index of two and three for non-cubic and cubic crystals, respectively. Well-known reconstruction schemes are also accounted for. The database is systematically improvable and has been rigorously validated against previous experimental and computational data where available. We will describe the methodology used in constructing the database, and how it can be accessed for further studies and design of materials.

Abstract

This study explored the inflammatory mechanism of toxicity of hemoglobin solutions (Hb-S). Human monocytes and mouse activated peritoneal macrophages were incubated with seven different solutions. The first four consisted of non-cross-linked bovine Hb. Of these, Hb-SI was incompletely purified of stromal phospholipids, Hb-SII was contaminated with environmental bacterial endotoxins, Hb-SIII was pure hemoglobin, and Hb-SIV was pure Hb with the addition of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and mannitol (M). The other three solutions were made of pure bovine Hb cross-linked with different agents: Hb-SV, reacted with glutaraldehyde; Hb-SVI reacted with bis-3,5-dibromosalicyl fumarate (DBSF); and Hb-SVII reacted with a ring-opened dialdehyde derivative of 5'(pyro)-phosphate of adenosine (ATP) (o-ATP). The reaction of monocytes and macrophages was studied in terms of (a) O2-derived radicals, as determined by the measurement of H2O2 and lipid peroxides; (b) complement factor C3a desArg; (c) 6-keto-prostaglandin F1 alpha (stable metabolite of prostacyclin); and (d) TxB2 (stable metabolite of thromboxane) released into the culture supernatants. The most significant reactions were obtained with the solutions contaminated with stromal phospholipids or bacterial endotoxins. Pure Hb was less reactive. Further reduction in proinflammatory activity was achieved by the addition of oxygen radical-scavengers (SOD, CAT, and M), or by the cross-linking of Hb with DBSF or o-ATP.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION. Une augmentation de l'incidence du carcinome hépatocellulaire (CHC) a été constatée dans les pays occidentaux ces dernières années. Il fait parti des cinq premières causes de mortalité dans le monde. Il se développe généralement sur une cirrhose, moins fréquemment sur une hépatopathie non cirrhotique et plus rarement sur un foie sain. La gravité de la cirrhose est évaluée notamment par le score de Child-­‐Pugh, puis le traitement adéquat est défini selon la classification du Barcelona Clinical Liver Cancer (BCLC). Depuis 2008, le service de chirurgie viscérale du CHUV a introduit un nouveau test quantitatif et qualitatif d'évaluation hépatique pré-­‐opératoire qui comprend une clairance au vert d'indocyanine (ICG), agent biologique qui ne change pas lors de son métabolisme hépatique. C'est un test de rétention qui nous permet de mieux évaluer les réserves hépatiques chez les patients cirrhotiques. OBJECTIF. L'objectif de ce travail est d'évaluer rétrospectivement sur la base de dossiers médicaux de malades tous les cas opérés de CHC dans le service entre 2008 et 2012, qui ont eu une évaluation pré-­‐opératoire selon le score de Child-­‐Turcotte-­‐Pugh (CTP) et de Barcelona Clinical Liver Cancer (BCLC)) en les comparant avec l'ICG test et les critères de Makuuchi. METHODE. Analyse statistique de la mortalité et de la morbidité de ces 2 groupes de patients. RESULTATS ESCOMPTES. Comparer nos résultats avec ceux publiés dans la littérature récente par les centres spécialisés pour la chirurgie hépatobiliaire. CONCLUSION. La chirurgie hépatique chez les patients cirrhotiques ne se limite plus à la chirurgie d'hypertension portale. L'amélioration des tests pré-­‐opératoires nous a permis de mieux choisir les patients accessibles à une chirurgie de résection, vu que la mortalité sur la liste d'attente de transplantation hépatique pour les patients atteints de CHC avoisine 8% par année.
