In many industrial manufacturing processes, the quality of products depends on the relation between two main ingredients or characteristics. Often, this calls for monitoring the ratio of two normal random variables with statistical process control (SPC) techniques. A large number of studies related to designing control charts monitoring this ratio have been published. However, these studies are based purely on the assumption of independent observations. In practice, autocorrelation between observations can exist and should be modeled to protect against the false alarm rate inflation when implementing a control chart. In this paper, we tackle this problem by investigating the performance of the Shewhart control chart monitoring the ratio of two normal variables, (denoted as Shewhart-RZ), in the presence of autocorrelation between successive observations. The autocorrelation is modeled through the bivariate autoregressive model VAR(1). We also provide an example to illustrates the use of the Shewhart-RZ control chart on a quality control problem.

This work focuses on optimal harvesting-renewing for a stochastic population. A mixed regular-singular control formulation with a state constraint and regime-switching is introduced. The decision-makers either harvest or renew with finite or infinite harvesting/renewing rates. The payoff functions depend on the harvesting/renewing rates. Several properties of the value functions are established. The limiting value function as the white noise intensity approaches infinity is identified. The Markov chain approximation method is used to find a numerical approximation of the value function and optimal strategies.

Monitoring the ratio of two normal random variables plays an important role in several manufacturing environments. For short production runs, however, the control charts assumed infinite processes cannot function effectively to detect anomalies. In this paper, we tackle this problem by proposing two one-sided Shewhart-type charts to monitor the ratio of two normal random variables for an infinite horizon production. The statistical performance of the proposed charts is investigated using the truncated average run length as a performance measure in short production runs. In order to help the quality practitioner to implement these control charts, we have provided ready-to-use tables of the control limit parameters. An illustrative example from the food industry is given for illustration.

Understanding the process of quenching is one of the major open questions in galaxy evolution, and crucial insights may be obtained by studying quenched galaxies at high redshifts, at epochs when the Universe and the galaxies were younger and simpler to model. However, establishing the degree of quiescence in high redshift galaxies is a challenging task. One notable example is Hyde, a recently discovered galaxy at z=3.709. As compact (r~0.5 kpc) and massive (M*~1e11 Msun) as its quenched neighbor Jekyll, it is also extremely obscured yet only moderately luminous in the sub-millimeter. Panchromatic modeling suggested it could be the first galaxy found in transition to quenching at z>3, however the data were also consistent with a broad range of star-formation activity, including moderate SFR in the lower scatter of the galaxy main-sequence (MS). Here, we describe ALMA observations of the [CII] 157um and [NII] 205um far-infrared emission lines. The [CII] emission within the half-light radius is dominated by ionized gas, while the outskirts are dominated by PDRs or neutral gas. This suggests that the ionization in the center is not primarily powered by on-going star formation, and could come instead from remnant stellar populations formed in an older burst, or from a moderate AGN. Accounting for this information in the multi-wavelength modeling provides a tighter constraint on the star formation rate of SFR=$50^{+24}_{-18}$ Msun/yr. This rules out fully quenched solutions, and favors SFRs more than factor of two lower than expected for a galaxy on the MS, confirming the nature of Hyde as a transition galaxy. Theses results suggest that quenching happens from inside-out, and starts before the galaxy expels or consumes all its gas reservoirs. Similar observations of a larger sample would determine whether this is an isolated case or the norm for quenching at high-redshift. We present an overview of the Middle Ages Galaxy Properties with Integral Field Spectroscopy (MAGPI) survey, a Large Program on ESO/VLT. MAGPI is designed to study the physical drivers of galaxy transformation at a lookback time of 3-4 Gyr, during which the dynamical, morphological, and chemical properties of galaxies are predicted to evolve significantly. The survey uses new medium-deep adaptive optics aided MUSE observations of fields selected from the GAMA survey, providing a wealth of publicly available ancillary multi-wavelength data. With these data, MAGPI will map the kinematic and chemical properties of stars and ionised gas for a sample of 60 massive (> 7 x 10^10 M_Sun) central galaxies at 0.25 < z <0.35 in a representative range of environments (isolated, groups and clusters). The spatial resolution delivered by MUSE with Ground Layer Adaptive Optics (GLAO, 0.6-0.8 arcsec FWHM) will facilitate a direct comparison with Integral Field Spectroscopy surveys of the nearby Universe, such as SAMI and MaNGA, and at higher redshifts using adaptive optics, e.g. SINS. In addition to the primary (central) galaxy sample, MAGPI will deliver resolved and unresolved spectra for as many as 150 satellite galaxies at 0.25 < z <0.35, as well as hundreds of emission-line sources at z < 6. This paper outlines the science goals, survey design, and observing strategy of MAGPI. We also present a first look at the MAGPI data, and the theoretical framework to which MAGPI data will be compared using the current generation of cosmological hydrodynamical simulations including EAGLE, Magneticum, HORIZON-AGN, and Illustris-TNG. Our results show that cosmological hydrodynamical simulations make discrepant predictions in the spatially resolved properties of galaxies at z ~ 0.3. A comprehensive understanding of collocation can help understand performance outcomes. For university cohorts, this needs data that describes large groups over a long period. Harnessing user devices to infer this, while tempting, is challenged by privacy concerns, power consumption, and maintenance issues. Alternatively, embedding new sensors in the environment is limited by the expense of covering the entire campus. We investigate the feasibility of leveraging WiFi association logs for this purpose. While these provide coarse approximations of location, these are easily obtainable and depict multiple users on campus over a semester. We explore how these coarse collocations are related to individual performance. Specifically, we inspect the association between individual performance and the collocation behaviors of project group members. We study 163 students (in 54 project groups) over 14 weeks. After describing how we determine collocation with the WiFi logs, we present a study to analyze how collocation within groups relates to a student's final score. We find collocation behaviors show a significant correlation (Pearson's r = 0.24) with performance -- better than both peer feedback or individual behaviors like attendance. In practice, there are processes where the in-control mean and standard deviation of a quality characteristic is not stable. In such cases, the coefficient of variation (CV) is a more appropriate measure for assessing process stability. In this paper, we consider the statistical design of Run Rules based control charts for monitoring the CV of multivariate data. A Markov chain approach is used to evaluate the statistical performance of the proposed charts. The computational results show that the Run Rules based charts outperform significantly the standard Shewhart control chart. Moreover, by choosing an appropriate scheme, the Run Rules based charts perform better than the Rum Sum control chart for monitoring the multivariate CV. We present ALMA Band 6 (nu=233GHz, lambda=1.3mm) continuum observations towards 68 'normal' star-forming galaxies within two Coma-like progenitor structures at z=2.10 and 2.47, from which ISM masses are derived, providing the largest census of molecular gas mass in overdense environments at these redshifts. Our sample comprises galaxies with a stellar mass range of 1x10^9M_sun - 4x10^11M_sun with a mean M_*~6x10^10M_sun. Combining these measurements with multiwavelength observations and SED modeling, we characterize the gas mass fraction and the star formation efficiency, and infer the impact of the environment on galaxies' evolution. Most of our detected galaxies (~70%) have star formation efficiencies and gas fractions similar to those found for coeval field galaxies and in agreement with the field scaling relations. However, we do find that the proto-clusters contain an increased fraction of massive, gas-poor galaxies, with low gas fractions (f_gas<6-10%) and red rest-frame ultraviolet/optical colors typical of post-starburst and passive galaxies. The relatively high abundance of passive galaxies suggests an accelerated evolution of massive galaxies in proto-cluster environments. The large fraction of quenched galaxies in these overdense structures also implies that environmental quenching takes place during the early phases of cluster assembly, even before virialization. Recent years have witnessed the rapid development of human activity recognition (HAR) based on wearable sensor data. One can find many practical applications in this area, especially in the field of health care. Many machine learning algorithms such as Decision Trees, Support Vector Machine, Naive Bayes, K-Nearest Neighbor, and Multilayer Perceptron are successfully used in HAR. Although these methods are fast and easy for implementation, they still have some limitations due to poor performance in a number of situations. In this paper, we propose a novel method based on the ensemble learning to boost the performance of these machine learning methods for HAR.

From a purely operational standpoint, the existence of microbes that can grow under extreme conditions, or "extremophiles", leads to the question of how the molecules making up these microbes can maintain both their structure and function. While microbes that live under extremes of temperature have been heavily studied, those that live under extremes of pressure have been neglected, in part due to the difficulty of collecting samples and performing experiments under the ambient conditions of the microbe. However, thermodynamic arguments imply that the effects of pressure might lead to different organismal solutions than from the effects of temperature. Observationally, some of these solutions might be in the condensed matter properties of the intracellular milieu in addition to genetic modifications of the macromolecules or repair mechanisms for the macromolecules. Here, the effects of pressure on enzymes, which are proteins essential for the growth and reproduction of an organism, and some adaptations against these effects are reviewed and amplified by the results from molecular dynamics simulations. We present post-cryogenic Spitzer imaging at 3.6 and 4.5 micron with the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) of the Spitzer/HETDEX Exploratory Large-Area (SHELA) survey. SHELA covers $\sim$deg$^2$ of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey "Stripe 82" region, and falls within the footprints of the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX) and the Dark Energy Survey. The HETDEX blind R $\sim$ 800 spectroscopy will produce $\sim$ 200,000 redshifts from the Lyman-$\alpha$ emission for galaxies in the range 1.9 < z < 3.5, and an additional $\sim$200,000 redshifts from the [OII] emission for galaxies at z < 0.5. When combined with deep ugriz images from the Dark Energy Camera, K-band images from NEWFIRM, and other ancillary data, the IRAC photometry from Spitzer will enable a broad range of scientific studies of the relationship between structure formation, galaxy stellar mass, halo mass, AGN, and environment over a co-moving volume of $\sim$0.5 Gpc$^3$ at 1.9 < z < 3.5. Here, we discuss the properties of the SHELA IRAC dataset, including the data acquisition, reduction, validation, and source catalogs. Our tests show the images and catalogs are 80% (50%) complete to limiting magnitudes of 22.0 (22.6) AB mag in the detection image, which is constructed from the weighted sum of the IRAC 3.6 and 4.5 micron images. The catalogs reach limiting sensitivities of 1.1 $\mu$Jy at both 3.6 and 4.5 micron (1$\sigma$, for R=2 arcsec circular apertures). As a demonstration of science, we present IRAC number counts, examples of highly temporally variable sources, and galaxy surface density profiles of rich galaxy clusters. In order to reproduce the high-mass end of the galaxy mass-distribution, some process must be responsible for the suppression of star-formation in the most massive of galaxies. Commonly Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are invoked to fulfil this role, but the exact means by which they do so is still the topic of much debate, with studies finding evidence for both the suppression and enhancement of star-formation in AGN hosts. Using the ZFOURGE and NMBS galaxy surveys, we investigate the host galaxy properties of a mass-limited (M$_{\odot}$ $\ge$ 10$^{10.5}$ M$_{\odot}$), high-luminosity (L$_{1.4}$ $>$ 10$^{24}$ W Hz$^{-1}$) sample of radio-loud Active Galactic Nuclei to a redshift of z = 2.25. In contrast to low redshift studies, which associate radio-AGN activity with quiescent hosts, we find that the majority of z $>$ 1.5 radio-AGN are hosted by star-forming galaxies. Indeed, the stellar populations of radio-AGN are found to evolve with redshift in a manner that is consistent with the non-AGN mass-similar galaxy population. Interestingly, we find the radio-AGN fraction is constant across a redshift range of 0.25 $\le$ z $<$ 2.25, perhaps indicating that the radio-AGN duty cycle has little dependence on redshift or galaxy type. We do however see a strong relation between the radio-AGN fraction and stellar mass, with radio-AGN becoming rare below $\sim$ 10$^{10.5}$ M$_{\odot}$ or a halo-mass of 10$^{12}$ M$_{\odot}$. This halo-mass threshold is in good agreement with simulations that initiate radio-AGN feedback at this mass limit. Despite this we find that radio-AGN host star-formation rates are consistent with the non-AGN mass-similar galaxy sample, suggesting that while radio-AGN are in the right place to suppress star-formation in massive galaxies they are not necessarily responsible for doing so., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication by MNRAS

Galaxies with stellar masses near M* contain the majority of stellar mass in the universe, and are therefore of special interest in the study of galaxy evolution. The Milky Way (MW) and Andromeda (M31) have present day stellar masses near M*, at 5x10^10 Msol (MW-mass) and 10^11 Msol (M31-mass). We study the typical progenitors of these galaxies using ZFOURGE, a deep medium-band near-IR imaging survey, which is sensitive to the progenitors of these galaxies out to z~3. We use abundance-matching techniques to identify the main progenitors of these galaxies at higher redshifts. We measure the evolution in the stellar mass, rest-frame colors, morphologies, far-IR luminosities, and star-formation rates combining our deep multiwavelength imaging with near-IR HST imaging from CANDELS, and far-IR imaging from GOODS-H and CANDELS-H. The typical MW-mass and M31-mass progenitors passed through the same evolution stages, evolving from blue, star-forming disk galaxies at the earliest stages, to redder dust-obscured IR-luminous galaxies in intermediate stages, and to red, more quiescent galaxies at their latest stages. The progenitors of the MW-mass galaxies reached each evolutionary stage at later times (lower redshifts) and with stellar masses that are a factor of 2-3 lower than the progenitors of the M31-mass galaxies. The process driving this evolution, including the suppression of star-formation in present-day M* galaxies requires an evolving stellar-mass/halo-mass ratio and/or evolving halo-mass threshold for quiescent galaxies. The effective size and star-formation rates imply that the baryonic cold-gas fractions drop as galaxies evolve from high redshift to z~0 and are strongly anticorrelated with an increase in the S\'ersic index. Therefore, the growth of galaxy bulges in M* galaxies corresponds to a rapid decline in the galaxy gas fractions and/or a decrease in the star-formation efficiency., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ; 25 pages, emulateapj format

We report on a study of eclipse timing variations in contact binary systems, using long-cadence lightcurves in the Kepler archive. As a first step, 'observed minus calculated' (O-C) curves were produced for both the primary and secondary eclipses of some 2000 Kepler binaries. We find ~390 short-period binaries with O-C curves that exhibit (i) random-walk like variations or quasi-periodicities, with typical amplitudes of +/- 200-300 seconds, and (ii) anticorrelations between the primary and secondary eclipse timing variations. We present a detailed analysis and results for 32 of these binaries with orbital periods in the range of 0.35 +/- 0.05 days. The anticorrelations observed in their O-C curves cannot be explained by a model involving mass transfer, which among other things requires implausibly high rates of ~0.01 M_sun per year. We show that the anticorrelated behavior, the amplitude of the O-C delays, and the overall random-walk like behavior can be explained by the presence of a starspot that is continuously visible around the orbit and slowly changes its longitude on timescales of weeks to months. Star-forming galaxies at redshifts z>6 are likely responsible for the reionization of the universe, and it is important to study the nature of these galaxies. We present three candidates for z~7 Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) from a 155 arcmin^2 area in the CANDELS/COSMOS field imaged by the deep FourStar Galaxy Evolution (zFourGE) survey. The FourStar medium-band filters provide the equivalent of R~10 spectroscopy, which cleanly distinguishes between z~7 LBGs and brown dwarf stars. The distinction between stars and galaxies based on an object's angular size can become unreliable even when using HST imaging; there exists at least one very compact z~7 candidate (FWHM~0.5-1 kpc) that is indistinguishable from a point source. The medium-band filters provide narrower redshift distributions compared with broad-band-derived redshifts. The UV luminosity function derived using the three z~7 candidates is consistent with previous studies, suggesting an evolution at the bright end (MUV -21.6 mag) from z~7 to z~5. Fitting the galaxies' spectral energy distributions, we predict Lyman-alpha equivalent widths for the two brightest LBGs, and find that the presence of a Lyman-alpha line affects the medium-band flux thereby changing the constraints on stellar masses and UV spectral slopes. This illustrates the limitations of deriving LBG properties using only broad-band photometry. The derived specific star-formation rates for the bright LBGs are ~13 per Gyr, slightly higher than the lower-luminosity LBGs, implying that the star-formation rate increases with stellar mass for these galaxies., Comment: Accepted in ApJ

We report here on the discovery of stellar occultations, observed with Kepler, that recur periodically at 15.685 hour intervals, but which vary in depth from a maximum of 1.3% to a minimum that can be less than 0.2%. The star that is apparently being occulted is KIC 12557548, a K dwarf with T_eff = 4400 K and V = 16. Because the eclipse depths are highly variable, they cannot be due solely to transits of a single planet with a fixed size. We discuss but dismiss a scenario involving a binary giant planet whose mutual orbit plane precesses, bringing one of the planets into and out of a grazing transit. We also briefly consider an eclipsing binary, that either orbits KIC 12557548 in a hierarchical triple configuration or is nearby on the sky, but we find such a scenario inadequate to reproduce the observations. We come down in favor of an explanation that involves macroscopic particles escaping the atmosphere of a slowly disintegrating planet not much larger than Mercury. The particles could take the form of micron-sized pyroxene or aluminum oxide dust grains. The planetary surface is hot enough to sublimate and create a high-Z atmosphere; this atmosphere may be loaded with dust via cloud condensation or explosive volcanism. Atmospheric gas escapes the planet via a Parker-type thermal wind, dragging dust grains with it. We infer a mass loss rate from the observations of order 1 M_E/Gyr, with a dust-to-gas ratio possibly of order unity. For our fiducial 0.1 M_E planet, the evaporation timescale may be ~0.2 Gyr. Smaller mass planets are disfavored because they evaporate still more quickly, as are larger mass planets because they have surface gravities too strong to sustain outflows with the requisite mass-loss rates. We detect ionized gas characteristics indicative of winds in three disk-dominated galaxies that are members of a super-group at z=0.37 that will merge to form a Coma-mass cluster. All three galaxies are IR-luminous (L_IR > 4 x 10^{10} L_sun, SFR >8 M_sun per year) and lie outside the X-ray cores of the galaxy groups. We find that the most IR-luminous galaxy has strong blue and redshifted emission lines with velocities of ~ +/-200 km/s and a third, blueshifted (~ 900 km/s) component. This galaxy's line-widths (Hb, [OIII]5007, [NII], Ha) correspond to velocities of 100-1000 km/s. We detect extraplanar gas in two of three galaxies with SFR > 8 M_sun per year whose orientations are approximately edge-on and which have IFU spaxels off the stellar disk. IFU maps reveal that the extraplanar gas extends to r_h ~ 10 kpc; [NII] and Ha line-widths correspond to velocities of ~200-400 km/s in the disk and decrease to ~50-150 km/s above the disk. Multi-wavelength observations indicate that the emission is dominated by star formation. Including the most IR-luminous galaxy we find that 18% of supergroup members with SFR > 8 M_sun per year show ionized gas characteristics indicative of outflows. This is a lower limit as showing that gas is outflowing in the remaining, moderately inclined, galaxies requires a non-trivial decoupling of contributions to the emission lines from rotational and turbulent motion. Ionized gas mass loss in these winds is ~0.1 M_sun per year for each galaxy, although the winds are likely to entrain significantly larger amounts of mass in neutral and molecular gas., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures (slightly degraded in quality), accepted for publication in ApJL

We present the recent merger history of massive galaxies in a spectroscopically-confirmed proto-cluster at z=1.62. Using HST WFC3 near-infrared imaging from the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS), we select cluster galaxies and z ~ 1.6 field galaxies with M_star >= 3 x 10^10 M_sun, and determine the frequency of double nuclei or close companions with projected separations less than 20 kpc co-moving and stellar mass ratios between 1:1 and roughly 10:1. We find that four out of five spectroscopically-confirmed massive proto-cluster galaxies have double nuclei, and 42 +13/-25 % of all M_star >= 3 x 10^10 M_sun cluster candidates are either in close pair systems or have double nuclei. In contrast, only 4.5 +/- 2.6% of the field galaxies are in close pair/double nuclei systems. The implied merger rate per massive galaxy in the proto-cluster is 3-10 times higher than the merger rate of massive field galaxies at z ~ 1.6, depending upon the assumed mass ratios. Close pairs in the cluster have minor merger stellar mass ratios (M_primary:M_satellite ~ 6:1), while the field pairs are typically major mergers with stellar mass ratios between 1:1 and 4:1. At least half of the cluster mergers are dissipationless, as indicated by their red colors and low 24 micron fluxes. Two of the double-nucleated cluster members have X-ray detected AGN with L_x > 10^43 erg/s, and are strong candidates for dual or offset super-massive black holes. We conclude that the massive z = 1.62 proto-cluster galaxies are undergoing accelerated assembly relative to the field population, and discuss the implications for galaxy evolution in proto-cluster environments., Comment: 9 paper, 6 color figure, 1 table; submitted to ApJ

We discuss the structural and morphological properties of galaxies in a z=1.62 proto-cluster using near-IR imaging data from Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 data of the Cosmic Assembly Near-IR Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS). The cluster galaxies exhibit a clear color-morphology relation: galaxies with colors of quiescent stellar populations generally have morphologies consistent with spheroids, and galaxies with colors consistent with ongoing star formation have disk-like and irregular morphologies. The size distribution of the quiescent cluster galaxies shows a deficit of compact (< 1kpc), massive galaxies compared to CANDELS field galaxies at z=1.6. As a result the cluster quiescent galaxies have larger average effective sizes compared to field galaxies at fixed mass at greater than 90% significance. Combined with data from the literature, the size evolution of quiescent cluster galaxies is relatively slow from z~1.6 to the present, growing as (1+z)^(-0.6+/-0.1). If this result is generalizable, then it implies that physical processes associated with the denser cluster region seems to have caused accelerated size growth in quiescent galaxies prior to z=1.6 and slower subsequent growth at z<1.6 compared to galaxies in the lower density field. The quiescent cluster galaxies at z=1.6 have higher ellipticities compared to lower redshift samples at fixed mass, and their surface-brightness profiles suggest that they contain extended stellar disks. We argue the cluster galaxies require dissipationless (i.e., gas-poor or "dry") mergers to reorganize the disk material and to match the relations for ellipticity, stellar mass, size, and color of early-type galaxies in z<1 clusters., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 14 pages in emulateapj format. Star formation in massive galaxies is quenched at some point during hierarchical mass assembly. To understand where and when the quenching processes takes place, we study the evolution of the total star formation rate per unit total halo mass (\Sigma(SFR/M)) in three different mass scales: low mass halos (field galaxies), groups, and clusters, up to a redshift ~1.6. We use deep far-infrared PACS data at 100 and 160 um to accurately estimate the total star formation rate of the Luminous Infrared Galaxy population of 9 clusters with mass ~10^{15} M_{\odot}, and 9 groups/poor clusters with mass ~ 5 x 10^{13} M_{\odot}. Estimates of the field \Sigma(SFR/M) are derived from the literature, by dividing the star formation rate density by the mean comoving matter density of the universe. The field \Sigma(SFR/M) increases with redshift up to z~1 and it is constant thereafter. The evolution of the \Sigma(SFR/M)-z relation in galaxy systems is much faster than in the field. Up to redshift z~0.2, the field has a higher \Sigma(SFR/M) than galaxy groups and galaxy clusters. At higher redshifts, galaxy groups and the field have similar \Sigma(SFR/M), while massive clusters have significantly lower \Sigma(SFR/M) than both groups and the field. There is a hint of a reversal of the SFR activity vs. environment at z~1.6, where the group \Sigma(SFR/M) lies above the field \Sigma(SFR/M)-z relation. We present Integral Field Unit (IFU) spectroscopy of four brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) at z~0.1. Three of the BCGs have close companions within a projected radius of 20 kpc and one has no companion within that radius. We calculate the dynamical masses of the BCGs and their companions to be 1.4x10^11

We report the discovery of a galaxy cluster at z=1.62 located in the Spitzer Wide-Area Infrared Extragalactic survey XMM-LSS field. This structure was selected solely as an overdensity of galaxies with red Spitzer/IRAC colors, satisfying [3.6]-[4.5] > -0.1 AB mag. Photometric redshifts derived from Subaru XMM Deep Survey (BViz-bands), UKIRT Infrared Deep Survey-Ultra-Deep Survey (UKIDSS-UDS, JK-bands), and from the Spitzer Public UDS survey (3.6-8.0 micron) show that this cluster corresponds to a surface density of galaxies at z ~ 1.6 that is more than 20 sigma above the mean at this redshift. We obtained optical spectroscopic observations of galaxies in the cluster region using IMACS on the Magellan telescope. We measured redshifts for seven galaxies in the range z=1.62-1.63 within 2.8 arcmin (<1.4 Mpc) of the astrometric center of the cluster. A posteriori analysis of the XMM data in this field reveal a weak (4 sigma) detection in the [0.5-2 keV] band compatible with the expected thermal emission from such a cluster. The color-magnitude diagram of the galaxies in this cluster shows a prominent red-sequence, dominated by a population of red galaxies with (z-J) > 1.7 mag. The photometric redshift probability distributions for the red galaxies are strongly peaked at z=1.62, coincident with the spectroscopically confirmed galaxies. The rest-frame (U-B) color and scatter of galaxies on the red-sequence are consistent with a mean luminosity-weighted age of 1.2 +/- 0.1 Gyr, yielding a formation redshift z_f = 2.35 +/- 0.10, and corresponding to the last significant star-formation period in these galaxies., Comment: ApJ, in press, 11 pages, 7 figures (some in color).
