In recent decades Taiwan's dynamic socioeconomic growth and political transformation have brought changes to a number of Chinese traditions giving rise to a more liberal middle class advocating for gender equality in Taiwanese society. Parenting responsibilities are becoming less gender-bound and fathers are becoming more involved in raising children. Studies examining parenting roles and practices in Taiwan, however, are limited. This paper provides a review of father involvement in historical and contemporary contexts in Taiwan as well as government and corporate policies that promote father involvement. Using Attride-Stirling's thematic network model the paper presents results of thematic content analyses of structured interviews conducted with fifteen Taiwanese fathers ages (30-61 years) and education levels (high school to Master's degree). The study addresses ways that fathers are involved in the lives of their young children. Major themes of father involvement to emerge were the importance of: 1) Being a positive role model; 2) Engagement with children in outdoor activities; 3) Education as a means to children's socioeconomic advancement; and 4) Evolving nature of socially-constructed father roles in Taiwan. Results indicate that Taiwanese views about father involvement and engagement with children are slowly shifting from traditional beliefs associated with a patriarchal society toward more egalitarian beliefs with respect to gender roles and parenting responsibilities. The article discusses a study on father involvement in Taiwan within historical and contemporary contexts. It addresses father-mother differences in activity engagement, involvement in academic and discipline/moral domains and parental role beliefs. It defines the role of the father to educate and enforce discipline. It indicates how changes in Taiwan's social and economic conditions brought about a progressive society where fathers are becoming more involved with the daily lives of their children and parents share more liberal beliefs about parenting.

This study was conducted to determine if computer-assisted instrument guidance (CAIG, Clear Guide Medical), with an optical tracking mechanism, enhances simulated transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block performance in a porcine model by novice student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs) compared with standalone ultrasonography (US). In a crossover design, 26 students were randomly assigned into 2 groups: US only and CAIG. Performance was assessed using a task-specific checklist survey tool and a global rating scale to assess performance. Time to hydrodissection and number of insertion attempts were recorded. A pre-procedure and postprocedure survey obtained participants' demographics and measured overall experience. Results revealed higher mean scores for all items in the global rating scale and overall performance (P = .010). The checklist survey results indicated no significant between-group differences. The CAIG group was observed to have significantly lower simulated block performance times (P = .037) and number of attempts (P = .002). The postprocedure survey results showed most participants (88%) reported an enhanced experience using the CAIG. Use of the CAIG showed favorable results in novice SRNAs performing the simulated block. Procedure performance, number of attempts, and time to complete were significantly lower, with a strong preference for the CAIG system., Competing Interests: The authors have declared no financial relationships with any commercial entity related to the content of this article. Anticoagulants, such as heparin and warfarin, are commonly used in the treatment and prevention of thromboembolic events. The risk of developing warfarin-induced skin necrosis (WISN) with warfarin is reported to be <1%. However, the risk of WISN may be increased with the initiation of warfarin in the setting of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia and thrombosis syndrome (HITT). WISN can lead to catastrophic tissue necrosis requiring amputations and mass debridement. This report describes a case of WISN following HITT and discusses the appropriate medical management of patients with HITT to avoid secondary WISN.
