- Abstract
Societal Impact Statement Sorghum is an important cereal crop that provides calories and nutrients for much of the world's population, and it is often grown with low fertiliser input. Optimising the yield, nutritive content and bioavailability of sorghum grain with minimal input is of importance for human nutrition, and arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi have previously shown potential to assist in this. Across sorghum genetic diversity, AM fungi improved the yield, nutrition and zinc and iron bioavailability of grain in a low phosphorus soil. Thus, food production systems that effectively manage AM fungi may improve consumer outcomes. Summary Sorghum is a C4 cereal crop that is an important source of calories and nutrition across the world, predominantly cultivated and consumed in low- and middle-income countries. Sorghum can be highly colonised by arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi, and the plant-fungal association can lead to improvements in biomass and nutrient uptake. High-throughput phenotyping allows us to non-destructively interrogate the ‘hidden’ effects of AM fungi on sorghum growth and phenology. Eight genetically diverse sorghum genotypes were grown in a soil amended with 2 or 20 mg P kg−1 and inoculated with an AM fungal culture of Rhizophagus irregularis. High-throughput phenotyping uncovered the ‘hidden’ effects of AM fungi on growth and phenology, while grain biomass, nutrition, Zn and Fe bioavailability and root AM colonisation was determined after destructive harvest. Sorghum plants colonised by AM fungi generally performed better than non-AM control plants, with greater yield, harvest indices, and grain P, Zn and Fe contents. During the early growth stages, AM colonisation led to temporary growth depressions. There were also AM fungal and P fertilisation effects on sorghum time-of-flowering. The sorghum genotype with the highest AM colonisation could barely produce grain when non-inoculated. The two genotypes that failed to mature had very low AM co

A total of 12 scolopendromorph species from five genera and three families were recorded in three different habitats (wooden forest, mixed timber-bamboo forest, and bamboo forest) and at three elevation ranges (>1,000 m, 700-1,000 m, and >700 m) from the biosphere reserve of the western Nghe An Province. Eleven species were recorded for the first time in the area. Scolopendridae is the most diverse family with nine species. The number of species was highest at elevation <700 m (9 species), and lowest at 700-1,000 m (4). By habitat distribution, the bamboo forest had the lowest number of species (3). Genus Otostigmus Porat, 1876 Type species: Otostigmus carinatus Porat, 1876, by subsequent designation (Pocock, 1891a: 229). Remarks. Edgecombe & Bonato (2011) stated that the genus is recognized by the sensilla coeloconica on clypeal part of epipharynx organized as a pair of lateral clusters; spiracles round or ovate, their long axis generally oriented vertically; floor of spiracular atrium usually raised into humps; border between labral and clypeal part of epipharynx strongly curved forwards; forcipular coxosternite with tooth-plates; leg tibia and tarsi with spurs, the latter sometime in pairs; testicular vesicles oriented oblique to central deferens duct. Most importantly, this genus is distinguished from other its congeners by the leg-bearing segment 7 lacking spiracles. The genus is currently divided into three subgenera distinguished by the presence (Otostigmus) or absence (Dactylotergitius and Parotostigmus) of spines on the ultimate leg prefemur. About 120 Otostigmus species have been described and are widely distributed worldwide (Edgecombe & Bonato in Minelli 2011). The subgenus Otostigmus comprises 58 species (Lewis 2010) or 60 (Edgecombe & Bonato in Minelli 2011) distributed in Africa and the Indo-Australian region. The subgenus Otostigmus is distinguished from the two other subgenera by having spines on the ultimate leg prefemur and coxopleural process with apical spines. All currently known species in Vietnam belong to the subgenus Otostigmus., Published as part of Vu, Ha T., Nguyen, Hung D., Le, Son X., Eguchi, Katsuyuki, Nguyen, Anh D. & Tran, Binh T. Diagnosis. Body with 21 leg-bearing segments. Spiracles oval-shaped (Fig. 2D). Antennae with 17 antennomeres including 3 basal smoothly glabrous ones (Fig. 2 AB). Coxosternal plate with 4+4 teeth (Fig. 2B). Paramedian grooves distinct on both tergites and sternites (Fig. 3 AB). Coxopleural process long, conical, with 57 apical spines (Figs 3 CD, 5AB, 6AB). Prefemur of the ultimate legs with numerous spines arranged in rows (Figs 4 AB, 5C, 6C). Previous records from Vietnam. QUANG NINH (Hon Gai, Ha Long); HAI PHONG (Cat Ba NP); HA NOI (Ba Vi NP); HOA BINH (Mai Chau District); VINH PHUC (Tam Dao NP); NINH BINH (Cuc Phuong NP); QUANG NAM (Cu Lao Cham Island); KON TUM (Buon Luoi); GIA LAI (An Khe District); DONG NAI (Ma Da; Cat Tien NP); Tho Chu Island; (Attems, 1938, 1953; Schileyko, 1992, 1995, 2007). Distribution. Also known from Laos, Indonesia (Java), Taiwan, Hong Kong, and China (Chao & Chang 2003; Schileyko 2007). Remarks. The species is widely distributed in Vietnam (Fig. 7). Otostigmus aculeatus varies remarkably in shape and chaetotaxic pattern of prefemoral spines of the ultimate leg. Based on the number of spines on coxopleural process and on prefemur of the ultimate leg, it can be divided into three morphological types. The first type has coxopleural process with 4 apical, 3 subapical and 1 dorsal spine, no lateral ones (Fig. 5 AB). Prefemur of the ultimate leg has 1 corner, 34 dorsomedial, 68 medial, 89 ventromedial, and 5 ventrolateral spinesall spines are arranged in lines, but the dorsomedial and ventrolateral spines are big whereas medial and ventromedial ones are small (Fig. 5C). The second type has coxopleural process with 4 apical, 23 subapical, 1 lateral and 1 dorsal spine (Fig. 6 AB). Prefemur of the ultimate leg has numerous small spines which are not arranged in lines (Fig. 6C). The last type has coxopleural process with 56 apical, 1 subapical, 1 dorsal spine, no lateral ones (Fig. 3 CD). Prefemur of the ultimate leg has 1 corner, 34 dorsomedial, 58 medial, 78 ventromedial and 45 ventrolateral spines. These spines are big and arranged in lines (Fig. 4). These types were sometimes found in the same locality, e.g. Me Linh or Thuong Tien. The three types also formed different lineages in the phylogenetic tree (Fig. 40). The differences may suggest that different species may be separated from O. aculeatus., Published as part of Vu, Ha T., Nguyen, Hung D., Le, Son X., Eguchi, Katsuyuki, Nguyen, Anh D. & Tran, Binh T. Two new earthworm species are described, namely Drawida angiang sp. nov. and Drawida cochinchina sp. nov. The former can be recognized by having male pores on spiniform penises in intersegment 10/11, an erect and sac-shaped spermathecal atrium, glandular prostate, the capsule coiled one round, the vas deferens strongly coiled but small, two large, round, genital markings on segments ix-x, and three gizzards in xiii-xv. The latter species is distinguished in having the male pores placed on highly elevated, backwardly directed, conical penises in 10/11, a slender spermathecal atrium, a glandular prostate, a somewhat folded capsule, the vas deferens strongly coiled as a bunch and equal size to the testis sacs, a pair of genital markings located closely anterior to the penises with 1-3 additional ones in xi-xii, and three or four gizzards in xiii-xvi. The DNA barcode fragment of the COI gene was extracted for each species, and the COI genetic distances and phylogenetic analysis also supported two new species.. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SORGHUM ,GRAIN yields ,FERTILIZERS ,MYCORRHIZAL fungi ,PHOSPHORUS - Abstract
Societal Impact Statement: Sorghum is an important cereal crop that provides calories and nutrients for much of the world's population, and it is often grown with low fertiliser input. Summary: Sorghum is a C4 cereal crop that is an important source of calories and nutrition across the world, predominantly cultivated and consumed in low‐ and middle‐income countries. Sorghum can be highly colonised by arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi, and the plant‐fungal association can lead to improvements in biomass and nutrient uptake. High‐throughput phenotyping allows us to non‐destructively interrogate the 'hidden' effects of AM fungi on sorghum growth and phenology.Eight genetically diverse sorghum genotypes were grown in a soil amended with 2 or 20 mg P kg−1 and inoculated with an AM fungal culture of Rhizophagus irregularis. High‐throughput phenotyping uncovered the 'hidden' effects of AM fungi on growth and phenology, while grain biomass, nutrition, Zn and Fe bioavailability and root AM colonisation was determined after destructive harvest.Sorghum plants colonised by AM fungi generally performed better than non‐AM control plants, with greater yield, harvest indices, and grain P, Zn and Fe contents. During the early growth stages, AM colonisation led to temporary growth depressions. There were also AM fungal and P fertilisation effects on sorghum time‐of‐flowering. The sorghum genotype with the highest AM colonisation could barely produce grain when non‐inoculated. The two genotypes that failed to mature had very low AM colonisation. Generally, the genetically diverse sorghum genotypes were highly responsive to AM colonisation and produced more grain of greater nutritive quality when colonised, without adverse consequences for micronutrient bioavailability. Societal Impact Statement: Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) may contribute to enhanced yield and nutrition of host plants for the purpose of sustainable agriculture. However, the growth response of the host plant to mycorrhizal colonization is generally only measured at harvest, and thus management decisions regarding AMF are made using only a single time point. This study highlights that AMF can provide growth benefits to the host plant over its life. Greater knowledge of how plants respond to AMF over time will improve understanding of how the association functions and ultimately lead to improved management decisions regarding AMF in an agricultural context. SummaryColonization by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can result in variable responses in the growth and mineral nutrition of host plants, and is highly dependent on soil nutrient condition; limited studies have addressed the effects of AMF on plant growth over time. The aim of this study was to investigate the AMF effects on plant growth over the life of the plant, and interactions with soil phosphorus (P) and zinc (Zn) availability. We used a high‐throughput shoot phenotyping system to examine the temporal growth responses to AMF and soil P and Zn availabilities in the pasture legume Medicago truncatula. Plants were either inoculated with Rhizophagus irregularis or mock‐inoculated, and were examined under two soil P and five soil Zn availability treatments. Plants were then destructively harvested to obtain final biomass and shoot nutrition data. The growth of M. truncatula plants over time responded very differently to AMF depending on the soil P availability. At low P, projected shoot area and absolute growth rate (AGR) became increasingly greater in the mycorrhizal plants over the course of the experiment. At high P, there was a positive growth response to AMF until approximately 40 days after planting, after which the AGR of the non‐mycorrhizal plants increased and the response to AMF became neutral. Zinc availability was highly interactive with P availability, but not with AMF inoculation. This research demonstrates that growth responses to mycorrhizal fungi change over the plant's life, and are highly dependent on soil P availability. Distribution. China (Chen 1946). Remarks. Sims & Easton (1972) stated that the species can be excluded from Metaphire or Pheretima because of the absence of copulatory pouches, but it cannot be assigned to a genus due to lack of details of the presence or absence of intestinal caeca. Therefore, it was listed as "species incertae sedis " on page 241 of Sims & Easton (1972). The examined population in Vietnam showed the presence of intestinal caeca in xxixxvii. The species is confirmedly assigned to the genus Amynthas., Published as part of Nguyen, Tung T., Nguyen, Anh D., Tran, Binh T.
