The gas-phase abundance of carbon, x_C = C/H, and its depletion factors are essential parameters for understanding the gas and solid compositions that are ultimately incorporated into planets. The majority of protoplanetary disks are born in clusters and, as a result, are exposed to external FUV radiation. These FUV photons potentially affect the disk's evolution, chemical composition, and line excitation. We present the first detection of the [CI]609um fine-structure line of neutral carbon (CI), achieved with ALMA, toward one of these disks, d203-506, in the Orion Nebula Cluster. We also report the detection of CI forbidden and permitted lines (from electronically excited states up to 10 eV) observed with JWST in the IR. These lines trace the irradiated outer disk and photo-evaporative wind. Contrary to the common belief that these IR lines are C+ recombination lines, we find that they are dominated by FUV-pumping of CI followed by fluorescence cascades. They trace the transition from atomic to molecular gas, and their intensities scale with G0. The lack of outstanding IR OI fluorescent emission, however, implies a sharper attenuation of external FUV radiation with E > 12 eV (~Lyman-beta). This is related to a lower effective FUV dust absorption cross section compared to that of interstellar grains, implying a more prominent role for FUV shielding by the CI photoionization continuum. The [CI]609um intensity is proportional to N(CI) and can be used to infer x_C. We derive x_C ~ 1.4E-4. This implies that there is no major depletion of volatile carbon compared to x_C measured in the natal cloud, hinting at a young disk. We also show that external FUV radiation impacts the outer disk and wind by vertically shifting the water freeze-out depth, which results in less efficient grain growth and settling. The JWST has captured the sharpest IR images ever taken of the Horsehead nebula, a prototypical moderately irradiated PDR that is fully representative of most of the UV-illuminated molecular gas in the Milky Way and star-forming galaxies. We investigate the impact of FUV radiation of a molecular cloud and constrain the structure of the edge of the PDR and its illumination conditions. We used NIRCam and MIRI to obtain 17 broadband and 6 narrowband maps from 0.7 to 28 $\mu$m. We mapped the dust emission, scattered light, and several gas phase lines. We also used HST-WFC3 maps at 1.1 and 1. 6 $\mu$m, along with HST-STIS spectroscopic observations of the H$\alpha$ line. We probed the structure of the edge of the Horsehead and resolved its spatial complexity. We detected a network of faint striated features extending perpendicularly to the PDR front into the H\,II region in filters sensitive to nano-grain emission and light scattered by larger grains. This may indeed figure as the first detection of the entrainment of dust particles in the evaporative flow. The map of the 1-0 S(1) line of H$_2$ presents sharp sub-structures on scales as small as 1.5 arcsec. The ionization and dissociation fronts appear at distances 1-2 arcsec behind the edge of the PDR and seem to spatially coincide, indicating a thickness of the neutral atomic layer below 100 au. All broadband maps present strong color variations which can be explained by dust attenuation. Deviations of the emissions in the H$\alpha$, Pa$\alpha,$ and Br$\alpha$ lines also indicate dust attenuation. With a very simple model, we derive the main features of the extinction curve. A small excess of extinction at 3 $\mu$m may be attributed to icy H$_2$O mantles onto grains. In all lines of sight crossing the inner regions of the Horsehead, it appears that dust attenuation is non-negligible over the entire spectral range., Comment: 25 pages, 17 figures

We study the emission of dust grains within the Orion Bar - a well-known, highly far-UV (FUV)-irradiated PDR. The Orion Bar because of its edge-on geometry provides an exceptional benchmark for characterizing dust evolution and the associated driving processes under varying physical conditions. Our goal is to constrain the local properties of dust by comparing its emission to models. Taking advantage of the recent JWST PDRs4All data, we follow the dust emission as traced by JWST NIRCam (at 3.35 and 4.8 micron) and MIRI (at 7.7, 11.3, 15.0, and 25.5 micron), along with NIRSpec and MRS spectroscopic observations. First, we constrain the minimum size and hydrogen content of carbon nano-grains from a comparison between the observed dust emission spectra and the predictions of the THEMIS dust model coupled to the numerical code DustEM. Using this dust model, we then perform 3D radiative transfer simulations of dust emission with the SOC code and compare to data obtained along well chosen profiles across the Orion Bar. The JWST data allows us, for the first time, to spatially resolve the steep variation of dust emission at the illuminated edge of the Orion Bar PDR. By considering a dust model with carbonaceous nano-grains and submicronic coated silicate grains, we derive unprecedented constraints on the properties of across the Orion Bar. To explain the observed emission profiles with our simulations, we find that the nano-grains must be strongly depleted with an abundance (relative to the gas) 15 times less than in the diffuse ISM. The NIRSpec and MRS spectroscopic observations reveal variations in the hydrogenation of the carbon nano-grains. The lowest hydrogenation levels are found in the vicinity of the illuminating stars suggesting photo-processing while more hydrogenated nano-grains are found in the cold and dense molecular region, potentially indicative of larger grains., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

[Abridged] JWST observations of the Orion Bar have shown the incredible richness of PAH bands and their variation on small scales. We aim to probe the photochemical evolution of PAHs across the key zones of the photodissociation region (PDR) that is the Orion Bar using unsupervised machine learning. We use NIRSpec and MIRI IFU data from the JWST ERS Program PDRs4All. We lever bisecting k-means clustering to generate detailed spatial maps of the spectral variability in several wavelength regions. We discuss the variations in the cluster profiles and connect them to the local physical conditions. We interpret these variations with respect to the key zones: the HII region, the atomic PDR zone, and the three dissociation fronts. The PAH emission exhibits spectral variation that depends strongly on spatial position in the PDR. We find the 8.6um band to behave differently than all other bands which vary systematically with one another. We find uniform variation in the 3.4-3.6um bands and 3.4/3.3 intensity ratio. We attribute the carrier of the 3.4-3.6um bands to a single side group attached to very similarly sized PAHs. Cluster profiles reveal a transition between characteristic profiles classes of the 11.2um feature from the atomic to the molecular PDR zone. We find the carriers of each of the profile classes to be independent, and reason the latter to be PAH clusters existing solely deep in the molecular PDR. Clustering also reveals a connection between the 11.2 and 6.2um bands; and that clusters generated from variation in the 10.9-11.63um region can be used to recover those in the 5.95-6.6um region. Clustering is a powerful tool for characterizing PAH variability on both spatial and spectral scales. Despite observational evidences, InfraRed (IR) excess of classical Cepheids are seldom studied and poorly understood, but probably induces systematics on the Period-Luminosity (PL) relation used in the calibration of the extragalactic distance scale. This study aims to understand the physical origin of the IR excess found in the spectral energy distribution (SED) of 5 Cepheids : RS Pup (P=41.46d), zeta Gem (P=10.15d), eta Aql (P=7.18d), V Cen (P=5.49d) and SU Cyg (P=3.85d). A time series of atmospheric models along the pulsation cycle are fitted to a compilation of data, including optical and near-IR photometry, Spitzer spectra (secured at a specific phase), interferometric angular diameters, effective temperature and radial velocity measurements. Herschel images in two bands are also analyzed qualitatively. In this fitting process, based on the SPIPS algorithm, a residual is found in the SED, whatever the pulsation phase, and for wavelengths larger than about $1.2\mu$m, which corresponds to the so-determined infrared excess of Cepheids. This IR excess is then corrected from interstellar medium absorption in order to infer or not the presence of dust shells, and is finally used in order to fit a model of a shell of ionized gas. For all Cepheids, we find a continuum IR excess increasing up to about -0.1 magnitudes at 30$\mu$m, which cannot be explained by a hot or cold dust model of CircumStellar Environment (CSE). We show, for the first time, that the IR excess of Cepheids can be explained by free-free emission from a thin shell of ionized gas, with a thickness of about 15% of the star radius, a mass of $10^{-9}-10^{-7}$ Msol and a temperature ranging from 3500 to 4500K. This result has to be tested with interferometers operating in visible, in the mid-IR or in the radio domain. The dynamical structure of the atmosphere of Cepheids has been well studied in the optical. Several authors have found very interesting spectral features in the J band, but little data have been secured beyond 1.6 um. However, such observations can probe different radial velocities and line asymmetry regimes, and are able to provide crucial insights into stellar physics. Our goal was to investigate the infrared line-forming region in the K-band domain, and its impact on the projection factor and the k-term of Cepheids. We secured CRIRES observations for the long-period Cepheid l Car, with a focus on the unblended spectral line NaI2208.969 nm. We measured the corresponding radial velocities (by using the first moment method) and the line asymmetries (by using the bi-Gaussian method). These quantities are compared to the HARPS visible spectra we previously obtained on l Car. The optical and infrared radial velocity curves show the same amplitude (only about 3% of difference), with a slight radial velocity shift of about 0.5 +/- 0.3 km s^-1 between the two curves. Around the minimum radius (phase ~ 0.9) the visible radial velocity curve is found in advance compared to the infrared one (phase lag), which is consistent with an infrared line forming higher in the atmosphere (compared to the visible line) and with a compression wave moving from the bottom to the top of the atmosphere during maximum outward velocity. We focus on empirically measure the p-factor of a homogeneous sample of 29 LMC and 10 SMC Cepheids for which an accurate average LMC/SMC distance were estimated from eclipsing binary systems. We used the SPIPS algorithm, which is an implementation of the BW method. As opposed to other conventional use, SPIPS combines all observables, i.e. radial velocities, multi-band photometry and interferometry into a consistent physical modeling to estimate the parameters of the stars. The large number and their redundancy insure its robustness and improves the statistical precision. We successfully estimated the p-factor of several MC Cepheids. Combined with our previous Galactic results, we find the following P-p relation: -0.08(log P-1.18)+1.24. We find no evidence of a metallicity dependent p-factor. We also derive a new calibration of the P-R relation, logR=0.684(log P-0.517)+1.489, with an intrinsic dispersion of 0.020. We detect an IR excess for all stars at 3.6 and 4.5um, which might be the signature of circumstellar dust. We measure a mean offset of $\Delta m_{3.6}=0.057$mag and $\Delta m_{4.5}=0.065$mag. We provide a new P-p relation based on a multi-wavelengths fit, and can be used for the distance scale calibration from the BW method. The dispersion is due to the MCs width we took into account because individual Cepheids distances are unknown. The new P-R relation has a small intrinsic dispersion, i.e. 4.5% in radius. Such precision will allow us to accurately apply the BW method to nearby galaxies. Finally, the IR excesses we detect raise again the issue on using mid-IR wavelengths to derive P-L relation and calibrate the $H_0$. These IR excesses might be the signature of circumstellar dust, and are never taken into account when applying the BW method at those wavelengths.
