De caráter introdutório, este texto visa acessar a história da geografia sob um ângulo pouco explorado no Brasil tanto em termos de objeto quanto de método: o das línguas e das traduções baseado na decolonialidade e nos translation studies. Para tanto, selecionamos o Boletim Geográfico do IBGE durante o Estado Novo (1943-1945) e identificamos uma questão de vulto: a ocorrência de uma intensa política editorial multilíngue de circulação científica por meio de diversas traduções. Contudo, tal política ocorria em meio a uma conjuntura em que o Estado Novo promovia a língua portuguesa como um dos principais símbolos do nacionalismo e da identidade nacional. Além de permitir lançar novas luzes sobre a história da geografia brasileira, uma pesquisa sobre o Boletim Geográfico pode ajudar a entender as razões pelas quais um país periférico tanto investe na tradução como gênero de circulação científica e de que forma isto acontece.

Objective: The current study aimed to translate the Hammersmith Infant Neurological Examination (HINE) into Brazilian Portuguese and analyze the reliability of the translated version for a population of Brazilian infants. Methods: This was a methodological study, approved by the Ethics Committee, carried out between June 2020 and May 2021. HINE is a standardized clinical neurological examination used for the early detection of cerebral palsy. The quantitative section, “neurological examination”, contains 26 items scored from 0 to 3 points, divided into five categories: cranial nerve function, posture, movements, muscle tone and reflexes, and reactions. The HINE translation followed four steps: translation, synthesis, back-translation, and evaluation by an expert committee. To verify the reliability of the HINE-Br (Portuguese-Brazil version) two independent examiners evaluated 43 infants, between 3 and 22 months of age. Internal consistency was verified by Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient and interrater reliability by the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Results: The translated version was similar to the original version and a few semantic and idiomatic adjustments were necessary. Appropriate internal consistency (Alpha=0.91) was found for the 26 items of the HINE-Br, as well as strong interrater reliability for the total score (ICC2.1=0.95), and also for the five categories (ICC2.1=0.83–0.95). Conclusions: The HINE-Br presents adequate rates of internal consistency and interrater reliability, and can be used for the evaluation of children at risk for cerebral palsy, between 3 and 24 months of age, by pediatricians and pediatric physical therapists. RESUMO A 11a Classificação Estatística Internacional de Doenças e Problemas Relacionados à Saúde representa um avanço no enfoque do conhecimento e em novas abordagens das doenças. A Classificação Estatística Internacional de Doenças e Problemas Relacionados à Saúde é utilizada para diferentes finalidades práticas, possibilitando avaliação do avanço da agenda de saúde global, alocação de recursos, segurança do paciente, qualificação da assistência à saúde e reembolso de seguros de saúde. É inteiramente digital, com recursos tecnológicos que permitem sua atualização periódica. No início de 2022, a 11a Classificação Estatística Internacional de Doenças e Problemas Relacionados à Saúde entrou em vigência oficial, tendo sido disponibilizada em vários de seus idiomas oficiais, como o árabe, chinês, espanhol, francês e inglês. Apresenta-se aqui o processo de tradução para a língua portuguesa em uso no Brasil, coordenado pela Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, com apoio do Ministério da Saúde do Brasil e da Organização Pan-Americana da Saúde/Organização Mundial da Saúde. O trabalho foi realizado em três etapas entre agosto de 2021 e dezembro de 2022 por tradutores com diferentes formações: médicos especialistas (49), fisioterapeuta (1), farmacologista (1) e odontologista (1). Com este artigo metodológico, almeja-se ampliar a discussão de perspectivas para implementação da 11a Classificação Estatística Internacional de Doenças e Problemas Relacionados à Saúde no Brasil e construir uma oportunidade para sua adaptação e uso por outros países de língua oficial portuguesa.

Resumo Objetivo Traduzir, adaptar transculturalmente e validar o conteúdo do Treatment Summary and Survivorship Care Plan (TSSCP-S) para sobreviventes brasileiras de câncer de mama. Métodos Estudo metodológico, quantitativo, executado de acordo com as etapas de tradução, compatibilização e retrotradução, construção de consenso de opiniões de um grupo de especialistas para a validação de conteúdo, de acordo com a Técnica Delphi e avaliação do usuário. Resultados O plano traduzido e adaptado transculturalmente foi avaliado por 10 profissionais, entre estes, enfermeiros, médicos, psicológos, nutricionista e fisioterapeuta, possuidores de titulação, produção científica, conhecimento e tempo de atuação na temática e o consenso foi obtido em duas rodadas. O instrumento apresentou coeficiente de validade de conteúdo de 83,3% na segunda rodada da Delphi. Na avaliação dos domínios conteúdo, clareza, utilidade, responsividade cultural e socioecológica, a concordância foi de 93,3%. O perfil sóciodemográfico e clínico das usuárias foi heterogêneo, contribuindo para os ajustes culturais necessários, com consenso final de 93,9%. Conclusão O plano de cuidados foi traduzido para o português do Brasil, adaptado transculturalmente e seus conteúdos foram validados, considerando as políticas de saúde nacionais.

Objective: To translate and culturally adapt the scales Pediatric Cerebral Performance Category (PCPC) and Pediatric Overall Performance Category (POPC) to the Brazilian population. Methods: Two English language proficient professionals independently translated the original version of the scales into Brazilian Portuguese. After consensus, it was generated a translated version of each scale. These were back translated into English by two native English translators. A new consensus process resulted in an English version of each scale, which were compared with the originals and approved by the author. A committee of experts with clinical and academic experience in intensive care checked the validity of the content and produced the pre-final versions of the scales, which were tested by 25 professionals from a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. An audit was conducted to verify the consistency of the methodological process. Results: The pre-final versions were approved by 96% of the Brazilian professionals. No significant changes were made to the content of the instrument; however, it was identified the need of a guide with instructions on how to use the scales. Conclusions: The process of translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the scales was completed and resulted in PCPC-BR and POPC-BR scales. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

RESUMO Objetivo: Traduzir e adaptar culturalmente o questionário Pediatric Intensive Care Unit-Quality of Dying and Death para o português do Brasil. Métodos: Realizou-se um processo de adaptação transcultural que incluiu equivalências conceitual, cultural e semântica. Esse processo foi composto de três etapas: Etapa 1 - autorização para realização da tradução e adaptação cultural; Etapa 2 - traduções independentes do inglês para o português do Brasil, síntese das traduções, retrotraduções e painel de especialistas; e Etapa 3 - pré-teste realizado com familiares cuidadores e equipe multiprofissional. Resultados: A avaliação pelo painel de especialistas resultou em concordância média de 0,8 em relação à equivalência semântica, cultural e conceitual. Os pré-testes de ambas as versões do questionário mostraram compreensão adequada dos participantes dos itens e opções de respostas. Conclusão: Após o processo de tradução e adaptação cultural da ferramenta Pediatric Intensive Care Unit-Quality of Dying and Death, as versões para cuidador e equipe multiprofissional foram consideradas culturalmente adaptadas, com boa compreensão dos itens por ambos os grupos. Os questionários incluem itens relevantes para avaliar o processo de morte e do morrer no ambiente de terapia intensiva e podem proporcionar mudanças no cuidado centrado no paciente e, principalmente, no familiar cuidador, perante a finitude de seus filhos.

Pesquisas em história da matemática têm como um de seus pressupostos reconhecer que a área de conhecimento que temos hoje não é a mesma daquelas disciplinas ou ciências consideradas como matemáticas no passado. Nesse sentido, este artigo objetiva apresentar um estudo sobre o que são as matemáticas nos séculos XVI e XVII, trazendo um olhar para algumas das classificações propostas neste período. Para tanto, são apresentadas traduções de excertos de duas obras: o diagrama do prefácio aos Elementos de Euclides, de John Dee, e um capítulo da Universae mathesis idea, de Adriaan van Roomen. Esses tratados mostram que havia, entre alguns estudiosos, uma preocupação em organizar o conhecimento científico do período, classificando como matemáticas não só as artes liberais do quadrivium, mas diversas outras artes teóricas e práticas. Embora as concepções e o pensamento matemático daquele momento tenham conexões com pensamentos da Antiguidade e dos medievais, percebemos, na verdade, que compreender o conhecimento matemático dos séculos XVI e XVII se mostra como algo complexo na medida em que as classificações são controversas e não consensuais. Os trabalhos de Dee e de van Roomen nos mostram algumas destas concepções presentes entre os matemáticos do período.

Objectives: To translate and culturally adapt the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit-Quality of Dying and Death questionnaire into Brazilian Portuguese. Methods: This was a cross-cultural adaptation process including conceptual, cultural, and semantic equivalence steps comprising three stages. Stage 1 involved authorization to perform the translation and cultural adaptation. Stage 2 entailed independent translation from English into Brazilian Portuguese, a synthesis of the translation, back-translation, and an expert panel. Stage 3 involved a pretest conducted with family caregivers and a multidisciplinary team. Results: The evaluation by the expert panel resulted in an average agreement of 0.8 in relation to semantic, cultural, and conceptual equivalence. The pretests of both versions of the questionnaire showed that the participants had adequate comprehension regarding the ease of understanding the items and response options. Conclusion: After going through the process of translation and cultural adaptation, the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit-Quality of Dying and Death caregiver and multidisciplinary team versions were considered culturally adapted, with both groups having a good understanding of the items. The questionnaires include relevant items to evaluate the process of death and dying in the intensive care setting, and suggest changes in care centered on patients and especially family caregivers, given the finitude of their children. Este artigo busca trazer contribuições para se pensar métodos de pesquisa a partir da Teoria Ator-rede (TAR), com autores como Latour, Despret, Favret-Saada, dentre outros - no intuito de trazer visibilidade a novas maneiras de se posicionar enquanto pesquisador. Nesta perspectiva, o pesquisador se encontra em um movimento de tradução e negociação, em um curso de ação composto por agentes diversos. Uma vez que se concebe que as ciências não estão recortadas do resto dos acontecimentos dispersos no mundo, pode então o cientista dar-se a percorrer uma infinidade de possibilidades de intervenção ao seguir as ações e seus agentes. Deste modo, o que estaria em pauta seria a produção de boas generalizações e não a comprovação de verdades previamente estabelecidas. Neste sentido, o caminho de pesquisa estaria representado pela capacidade de articulação das ciências com temas para além de suas fronteiras, compondo outras traduções, mais amplas e inclusivas daquilo que as cercam.

Esse artigo retraça os caminhos e descaminhos da obra Proust contra a Degradação, de Joseph Czapski (1896-1993), e os percalços de sua redação, transmissão e publicação. Esse livro transita entre memória, ensaio e testemunho histórico, e transcreve uma série de conferências proferidas entre 1940 e 1941, no interior de um gulag siberiano, sobre Proust, seu romance, e seu poder “salvador” (de acordo com o próprio autor). Livro que espelha, em certa medida, seu autor, sobrevive a perdas e esquecimentos. O autor, que é escritor, artista plástico e crítico de arte, pretendia, com ele, “fazer um tributo à literatura francesa“, mas seu belo ensaio é eclipsado por imperativos ideológicos. Enquadramento: Um número significativo de pessoas adultas tem um acesso venoso periférico difícil, o que leva a múltiplas tentativas de punção e ao esgotamento da rede venosa. A escala Venous International Assessment (VIA) é considerada a nível internacional como um instrumento fiável que classifica as vias de acesso venoso periférico das pessoas e determina o risco de complicações associadas. Objetivos: Traduzir, adaptar culturalmente e validar a Escala VIA para português europeu. Metodologia: Estudo da tradução, adaptação cultural, e avaliação das propriedades psicométricas da escala VIA em amostra não probabilística de 100 pessoas doentes a precisar de cateterização venosa periférica. Resultados: A versão em português europeu da escala VIA (EARV) revelou valores moderados de fiabilidade inter-observadores (k = 0,490; p < 0,0005). As validades do critério e do constructo da EARV foram avaliadas através de análise preditiva, convergente e correlacional, com magnitudes moderadas a grandes e significância estatística. Conclusão: A EARV é um instrumento fiável e válido que pode ajudar os profissionais de saúde portugueses na determinação e categorização de acessos venosos periféricos difíceis. Contudo, recomenda-se a realização de mais estudos para testar a aplicabilidade transversal desta escala.

Introduction: The Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale – Cognitive Subscale is a brief battery developed to assess cognitive functioning in Alzheimer’s disease that encompasses the core characteristics of cognitive decline (e.g. memory, language, praxis, constructive ability and orientation). The early detection, as well as the monitoring of cognitive decline along disease progression, is extremely important in clinical care and interventional research. The main goals of the present study were to analyze the psychometric properties of the Portuguese version of the Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale – Cognitive Subscale, and to establish normative values for the Portuguese population. Material and Methods: The Portuguese version of Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale – Cognitive Subscale was administered to 223 cognitively healthy participants according to a standard assessment protocol consisting of the Mini-Mental State Examination, the Montreal Cognitive Assessment and the Adults and Older Adults Functional Assessment Inventory. Normal performance on the assessment protocol was the inclusion criteria for the study. Results: The Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale – Cognitive Subscale revealed good psychometric properties when used in the Portuguese population. Age was the main predictor of the Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale – Cognitive Subscale total score (R2 = 0.123), whereas the influence of education level was lower (R2 = 0.027). These two variables explained 14.4% of the variance on the Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale – Cognitive Subscale scores and were used to stratify the normative values for the Portuguese population presented here. Conclusion: On the total sample, the average total score in the Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale – Cognitive Subscale was 6 points. The normative data were determined according to age and educational level as these were the sociodemographic variables that significantly contributed to the prediction of the Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale – Cognitive Subscale total scores, explaining 14.4% of their variance. The normative data are of the utmost importance to ensure proper use of this battery in Portugal.

This article provides an analysis of the position of Brazilian literature in France. In fact, it continues the work of Pierre Rivas (Rivas, 1976) and Marie-Hélène Torres (Torres, 2001) while widening its scope (Torres, 2001). While we certainly owe the progress of our studies to these authors, we also find a major conflict with their methodology. It appears that their exploration of Brazilian literature in France during the second half of the twentieth century should be redefined in light of the globalization of literature, especially according to the concepts developed by Pascale Casanova (Casanova, 1999). High profile case studies focusing on international literary reception can no longer be framed as stories between two countries only; they illustrate the combination of binary (largely national) models with new patterns of globalization.

ABSTRACT Objective: To translate the Quebec Sleep Questionnaire (QSQ), a specific instrument for the assessment of quality of life in patients with sleep obstructive apnea, into Portuguese and to create a version that is cross-culturally adapted for use in Brazil. Methods: The Portuguese-language version was developed according to a rigorous methodology, which included the following steps: preparation; translation from English into Portuguese in three versions; reconciliation to a single version; back-translation of that version into English; comparison and harmonization of the back-translation with the original version; review of the Portuguese-language version; cognitive debriefing; text review; and arrival at the final version. Results: The Portuguese-language version of the QSQ for use in Brazil had a clarity score, as measured by cognitive debriefing, ranging from 0.81 to 0.99, demonstrating the consistency of translation and cross-cultural adaptation processes. Conclusions: The process of translating the QSQ into Portuguese and creating a version that is cross-culturally adapted for use in Brazil produced a valid instrument to assess the quality of life in patients with obstructive sleep apnea.

ABSTRACT CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: Uterine fibroids (UF), also known as leiomyomas, are the most prevalent gynecological tumors. The Uterine Fibroid Symptoms and Quality of Life (UFS-QOL) is the only specific questionnaire that assesses symptom intensity and quality-of-life issues for women with symptomatic UF; however, it only exists in the English language. Thus, we aimed to translate and culturally validate the UFS-QOL questionnaire for the Brazilian Portuguese language. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional study, Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, FMRP-USP. METHODS: 113 patients with UF (case group) and 55 patients without UF (control group) were interviewed using the UFS-QOL questionnaire after translation and cultural adaptation. The Short Form-36 questionnaire was used as a control. Demographic and psychometric variables were analyzed. RESULTS: Women with UF presented higher mean age, body mass index, weight, parity and comorbidities than the control group (P < 0.05). The most prevalent complaints were abnormal uterine bleeding (93.8%), pelvic pain (36.3%) and extrinsic compression (10.6%) and these presented adequate construct validity regarding UFS-QOL severity (P < 0.05). The UFS-QOL questionnaire presented good internal consistency regarding symptom severity and quality-of-life-related domains (intraclass correlation coefficient, ICC = 0.82/0.88). Structural validity presented correlation coefficients ranging from 0.59 to 0.91. Test-retest comparison did not show differences among the UFS-QOL subscales. After treatment, women with UF presented improvements on all subscales. CONCLUSION: The UFS-QOL questionnaire presented adequate translation to the Brazilian Portuguese language, with good internal consistency, discriminant validity, construct validity, structural validity and responsiveness, along with adequate test-retest results.

The article was elaborated for four hands, with two well defined tasks for each collaborator. The first is the result of a doctoral thesis on the transla- tions of biblical texts. The second, which focuses more on the various Targumim and their relationship to the New Testament, is the result of the "The Targum and the New Testament" Research Project. The main objective of this article is to show the relationship between the Aramaic Paraphrases of the Hebrew Text and the New Testament. Linked to this objective the article intends to show how these translations are the result of a long process of accommodation, revision and censorship, and finally of writing a tradition that has formed throughout history. To accomplish this will be covered the following steps. The first three parts of the article will be devoted to the presentation of the Targumim in its general aspects. Resumo A recepção do pensamento de Nietzsche pela inteligência brasileira, entre o início da década de 1930 e a véspera do centenário de seu nascimento, constitui o tema do presente ensaio. Para tanto, busca-se analisar aproximadamente cinco dezenas de artigos que surgiram na imprensa nacional, dos quais dezoito foram trazidos ao público em sua íntegra nos Cadernos Nietzsche. Para bem compreender o debate, investiga- se também o papel desempenhado pelas traduções de livros de intérpretes do filósofo e das primeiras traduções das obras de Nietzsche editadas no Brasil. Em meio à complexidade de abordagens do pensamento nietzschiano entre nomes expressivos do cenário intelectual brasileiro, acaba por transparecer que muitos deles dissociaram o vínculo entre o nome do filósofo e o nazismo, reconhecendo-o como o pensador que antecipara as tensões imanentes do século XX - o "homem que foi um campo de batalha", tal como definiu Mário Ferreira dos Santos no prefácio que escreveu em 1943 para a sua tradução de A vontade de Potência.

Objective : To translate The Manchester Respiratory Activities of Daily Living (MRADL) questionnaire into Portuguese and to create a version of the MRADL that is cross-culturally adapted for use in Brazil. Methods : The English-language version of the MRADL was translated into Portuguese by two health care researchers who were fluent in English. A consensus version was obtained by other two researchers and a pulmonologist. That version was back-translated into English by another translator who was a native speaker of English and fluent in Portuguese. The cognitive debriefing process consisted in having 10 COPD patients complete the translated questionnaire in order to test its understandability, clarity, and acceptability in the target population. On the basis of the results, the final Portuguese-language version of the MRADL was produced and approved by the committee and one of the authors of the original questionnaire. Results : The author of the MRADL questioned only a few items in the translated version, and some changes were made to the mobility and personal hygiene domains. Cultural differences regarding the domestic activities domain were found, in particular regarding the item "Do you have the ability to do a full clothes wash and hang them out to dry?", due to socioeconomic and climatic issues. The item "Do you take care of your garden?" was questioned by the participants who lived in apartments, being modified to "Do you take care of your garden or plants in your apartment?" Conclusions : The final Portuguese-language version of the MRADL adapted for use in Brazil was found to be easy to understand and easily applied.

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE: To perform a cross-cultural adaptation of the Prenatal Diagnostic Procedures Anxiety Scale questionnaire for application in the Brazilian cultural context. METHODS: The translation and back translation processes followed internationally accepted criteria. A committee of experts evaluated the semantic, idiomatic, experimental and conceptual equivalence, proposing a pre-final version that was applied in 10.0% of the final sample. Afterwards, the final version was approved for the psychometric analysis. At that stage, 55 pregnant women participated which responded to the proposed Brazilian version before taking an ultrasound examination at a public hospital in Santa Catarina, in the year of 2017. The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale was used as an external reliability parameter. The internal consistency of the instrument was obtained by Cronbach's alpha. Validation was performed by exploratory factorial analysis with extraction of principal components by the Kaiser-Guttman method and Varimax rotation. RESULTS: The Cronbach's alpha value of the total instrument was 0.886, and only the percentage of variance from item 2 (0.183) was not significant. The Kaiser-Guttman criterion defined three factors responsible for explaining 78.5% of the variance, as well as the Scree plot. Extraction of the main components by the Varimax method presented values from 0.713 to 0.926, with only item 2 being allocated in the third component. CONCLUSIONS: The Brazilian version is reliable and valid for use in the diagnosis of anxiety related to the performance of ultrasound procedures in prenatal care. Due to the lack of correlation with the rest of the construct, it is suggested that item 2 be removed from the final version.

Here we present three short stories written by Hubert Jennings while he lived in Portugal, in 1968 and 1969: "Rua Dona Estefânia," "From a Lisbon Window," and "At the Brasileira" – the first two unpublished, and the latter having four different versions (three recently found in the Jennings archive, and one published in 1988 in the South African journal Contrast). The introduction to these texts also analyzes the short story "Judica Me Deus," the only fictional chapter of Jennings's book The DHS Story, in which, seemingly for the first time, Fernando Pessoa was turned into a literary character. By focusing on "At the Brasileira" and "Judica Me Deus," comparing and contrasting how those pieces recreate Pessoa, this presentation places Jennings among authors such as José Saramago and Antonio Tabucchi, who would later also turn Pessoa and/or his heteronymous personae into elements of their own fictional worlds.

Objective: To translate and cross-culturally adapt the Functional Status Scale for hospitalized children into Brazilian Portuguese. Methods: A methodological study of the translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the Functional Status Scale was conducted, according to the stages of translation, synthesis of translations, back-translation, synthesis of back-translations, expert committee analysis and pre-test with a sample of the target population. During the evaluation by the committee of experts, semantic, content and item analyses were performed. Results: The semantic, idiomatic, cultural and conceptual equivalences between the translated version and the original version were obtained, resulting in the Brazilian version of the Functional Status Scale. After the analysis by the expert committee, there were no problems regarding the cultural or conceptual equivalences because the items were pertinent to the Brazilian culture and few terms were modified. In the pre-test stage, the scale was applied by two evaluators to a sample of 25 children. Clarity and ease in answering the scale items were observed. Good inter-observer reliability was obtained, with an intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.85 (0.59 - 0.95). Conclusions: The Functional Status Scale for pediatric use was translated and culturally adapted into Portuguese spoken in Brazil. The translated items were pertinent to the Brazilian culture and evaluated the dimensions proposed by the original instrument. Validation studies of this instrument are suggested to make it feasible for use in different regions of Brazil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OBJECTIVE Translate the Patient-centered Assessment and Counseling for Exercise questionnaire, adapt it cross-culturally and identify the psychometric properties of the psychosocial scales for physical activity in young university students.METHODS The Patient-centered Assessment and Counseling for Exercise questionnaire is made up of 39 items divided into constructs based on the social cognitive theory and the transtheoretical model. The analyzed constructs were, as follows: behavior change strategy (15 items), decision-making process (10), self-efficacy (6), support from family (4), and support from friends (4). The validation procedures were conceptual, semantic, operational, and functional equivalences, in addition to the equivalence of the items and of measurements. The conceptual, of items and semantic equivalences were performed by a specialized committee. During measurement equivalence, the instrument was applied to 717 university students. Exploratory factor analysis was used to verify the loading of each item, explained variance and internal consistency of the constructs. Reproducibility was measured by means of intraclass correlation coefficient.RESULTS The two translations were equivalent and back-translation was similar to the original version, with few adaptations. The layout, presentation order of the constructs and items from the original version were kept in the same form as the original instrument. The sample size was adequate and was evaluated by the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin test, with values between 0.72 and 0.91. The correlation matrix of the items presented r < 0.8 (p < 0.05). The factor loadings of the items from all the constructs were satisfactory (> 0.40), varying between 0.43 and 0.80, which explained between 45.4% and 59.0% of the variance. Internal consistency was satisfactory (α ≥ 0.70), with support from friends being 0.70 and 0.92 for self-efficacy. Most items (74.3%) presented values above 0.70 for the reproducibility test.CONCLUSIONS The validation process steps were considered satisfactory and adequate for applying to the population.

ABSTRACT Objective: to make the cultural adaptation and evaluate the reliability of the Brazilian version of the General Comfort Questionnaire for chronic hemodialytic renal patients. Method: methodological study with the following steps: translation; consensus among judges; back-translation; validation of equivalence (semantic, idiomatic, experimental and conceptual) by 12 judges; and pre-test with 80 chronic renal patients on hemodialysis. Reliability was checked through measures of internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha). Results: the overall consensus of the instrument had 94.3% of equivalence. Twenty-one items of the instrument were modified. Of these, only two needed semantic and idiomatic changes. The other 19 underwent few modifications, such as reversing words in the sentence and replacing some corresponding synonym terms. The Cronbach’s alpha was 0.80, indicating optimal internal consistency. In the application, the total score ranged from 116 to 172 points (M = 151.66; SD = ± 12.60). Conclusion: the validation of the Portuguese version of the instrument represents one additional resource to be made available to nephrologist nurses; it will aid in directing the decision-making so that the nursing interventions be performed according to the level of comfort and domain, either physical, socio-cultural, environmental or psycho-spiritual. Objective: To translate the Leicester Cough Questionnaire (LCQ) to Portuguese and adapt it for use in Brazil. Methods: Cross-cultural adaptation of a quality of life questionnaire requires a translated version that is conceptually equivalent to the original version and culturally acceptable in the target country. The protocol used consisted of the translation of the LCQ to Portuguese by three Brazilian translators who were fluent in English and its back-translation to English by another translator who was a native speaker of English and fluent in Portuguese. The back-translated version was evaluated by one of the authors of the original questionnaire in order to verify its equivalence. Later in the process, a provisional Portuguese-language version was thoroughly reviewed by an expert committee. In 10 patients with chronic cough, cognitive debriefing was carried out in order to test the understandability, clarity, and acceptability of the translated questionnaire in the target population. On that basis, the final Portuguese-language version of the LCQ was produced and approved by the committee. Results: Few items were questioned by the source author and revised by the committee of experts. During the cognitive debriefing phase, the Portuguese-language version of the LCQ proved to be well accepted and understood by all of the respondents, which demonstrates the robustness of the process of translation and cross-cultural adaptation. Conclusions: The final version of the LCQ adapted for use in Brazil was found to be easy to understand and easily applied.
