People of varying ages have different reasons for visiting parks during their leisure time, and while previous studies often focused on youth activities during their play within parks, less attention has been given to which park settings are preferred by the youth themselves for socialising, and with whom they want to socialise. This study explored youth social engagement within neighbourhood parks as behaviour settings, considering the environments as theorised entities that embody predetermined uses by suggesting and or enabling specific activities. Data was collected using an online visual data collection method called a photo-choice tool with a total of 192 youth, aged 9–17 from the Moreton Bay Region of Queensland, Australia, who completed the tool while visiting a neighbourhood park. Using theoretical saturation during the analysis, the data was grouped into three main themes; environmental attributes (park settings), social attributes (people with whom youth preferred to go), and behavioural attributes (motives for the preferred activities). Findings show that the presence of others, including friends, siblings and parents, motivate youth in both age categories (9–12 years and 13–17 years) to visit parks, and this presence of people also affects their preferences for park activities. The results of this research demonstrate that accompanying friends is one of the most important reasons youth visit a park, and that social activities and social interactions among youth are not only affected by the affordances of the park settings, but also by the social affordances that youth present to each other.

Organisms inhabiting methane seep sediments are exposed to stress in the form of high levels of hydrogen sulfide, which result mainly from sulfate reduction coupled to anaerobic methane oxidation. Dorvilleidae (Polychaeta) have successfully invaded this ecosystem, and multiple species in divergent genetic clades co-occur at high densities. At methane seeps in the NE Pacific off California and Oregon, the genera Ophryotrocha, Parougia and Exallopus are especially well represented. To test the hypothesis that dorvilleid coexistence is facilitated by niche partitioning through sulfide tolerance and trophic patterns, we examined dorvilleid species-specific patterns of occurrence and nutrition at methane seeps off Eel R. [ER] on the Californian continental slope and at Hydrate Ridge [HR] on the Oregon continental slope, and in two habitats (clam bed and microbial mat) characterized by lower and higher hydrogen sulfide levels, respectively. Microelectrode measurements of hydrogen sulfide enabled characterization of environmental sulfide levels for species sampled in background sediment cores and in colonization trays. Dorvilleids tolerated H2S levels from 10 μM to over 2.6 mM, with the majority of species inhabiting sediments with similar environmental H2S concentrations (median 85–100 μM). Dorvilleid species richness was greater at HR than ER, but did not differ between clam bed and microbial mat habitats. Species distribution patterns reflected preferences for ER clam bed (lower sulfide levels), ER mat and HR clam bed (moderate sulfide levels), or HR mat (very high sulfide levels). Nutritional patterns, including trophic diversity and functional similarity, were examined using community stable isotope metrics based on δ15N and δ13C. Within each region, dorvilleid species exhibited multiple trophic strategies. Co-existing congeners typically exhibited distinct isotope signatures, suggesting trophic partitioning. Trophic diversity and δ15N range for whole assemblages (measured by Total Hull Area and Standard Elliptical Area using species averages) and functional redundancy or species packing (measured as distance to nearest neighbor) among species and individuals were generally higher at ER, where sulfide levels were lower than at HR. In contrast, average trophic diversity among individuals within a species was greater at HR than ER. In colonization experiments involving agar-based manipulations of sulfide in tray sediments that mimicked clam bed and mat conditions, dorvilleids comprised 68% and 48% of colonists at ER and HR, respectively. Dorvilleid species richness was higher in trays that were initially more sulfidic. However, habitat exerted stronger influence on the composition of colonizing dorvilleids than did sulfide additions. In the NE Pacific, regional, habitat and vertical (down-core) variation in hydrogen sulfide creates complex environmental heterogeneity at methane seeps, promoting high diversity of stress-tolerant taxa such as dorvilleid polychaetes.

The pleiotropic effects of circulating ecdysteroids in the adult fiddler crab, Uca pugilator, during molting, regeneration, and reproduction are mediated by a limited number of receptor proteins. We hypothesize that hormonal effects in vivo may be the result of complex interactions between at least two receptor heterodimer conformations that differentially respond to multiple ecdysteroid/retinoid signals. Two splicing variants of the fiddler crab retinoid-X-receptor (UpRXR) differ from one another by the addition of a 33 amino acid insert in the ligand-binding domain. We show here that the ecdysteroid receptor in the fiddler crab (UpEcR) behaves differently depending upon the UpRXR isoform with which it is partnered. The two UpRXR variant partners for UpEcR confer slightly different responses in the binding of Ponasterone A (PA)-a naturally occurring ecdysteroid in the blood of Uca. UpRXR can bind 9-cis retinoic acid (9cRA) as well as terpenoids. 9cRA and the naturally occurring terpenoid, methyl farnesoate, influence the binding of PA to UpEcR/UpRXR dimers. Endogenous retinoids are found in the blastema of regenerating limbs of Uca and they (plus blood-borne terpenoids) may add additional levels of differential response by target tissues. Thus, the two sets of heterodimers tested here may represent different dynamic complexes whose properties are defined by the specific heterodimeric subunits involved and the specific ligands available.
