The power of fishery-independent surveys for stock assessments and management decisions is in their consistency over time and space. Although the preference is to limit change to survey execution, such changes may be necessary. In multi-species surveys, changes that improve metrics for one species may be a detriment to survey performance for others. In 2010, the Southeast Reef Fish Survey (SERFS) was formed to better address sampling needs off the U.S. Southeast Atlantic coast by intensifying a historical chevron trap survey (MARMAP), especially at the northern and southern extent of the sampling range. We used several performance metrics (encounter rate, annual coefficient of variability, standard error, and relative abundance index values) to determine the impact of this change in survey coverage on trend estimates for three commonly encountered species with varying centers of distribution in the survey region. Gray Triggerfish (Balistes capriscus) is found throughout the range of both surveys (i.e. centrally-distributed), while White Grunt (Haemulon plumierii) and Red Snapper (Lutjanus campechanus) are centered near the northern and southern extent of the sampling range, respectively. For Gray Triggerfish, the survey intensification had no effect on encounter rate, but reduced the coefficient of variation and indicated that the historical index of relative abundance may have been overestimated. For White Grunt, the survey intensification slightly improved CV but did not affect the index of relative abundance value or encounter rate. For Red Snapper, SERFS increased encounter rates, reduced CV overall, and detected a population increase 5 years earlier than MARMAP. Overall, the intensification of the survey improved at least one performance metric for each species and showed few deleterious effects on performance, suggesting that intensification of the survey was a net-positive for the accurate estimation of population trends in several species of interest.

Red porgy (Pagrus pagrus) is a reef-associated, economically-important, winter-spawning, protogynous Sparidae species that appears to have declined in abundance in recent years along the southeast United States Atlantic coast. We used spatially-explicit generalized additive models built with fishery-independent chevron trap (1990-2021) and video data (2011-2021) to quantify the ways in which red porgy relative abundance and mean size varied across temporal, spatial, environmental, and habitat variables. Mean red porgy relative abundance from traps declined by 77% between 1992 and 2021, and declines were similarly large (69%) on video between 2011 and 2021. The largest two-year decline in relative abundance occurred early in the COVID-19 pandemic (2019-2021)- 32% in traps and 45% on video-despite already low abundance. Highest red porgy relative abundance from traps and video occurred in deep areas (i.e., 60-100 m) between southern North Carolina and north Georgia, and red porgy preferred low relief but continuous hardbottom habitats (i.e., pavement). We confirmed recent low recruitment of red porgy in the region based on the large increase in mean length (29%) and severe (~99%) declines of juvenile red porgy caught over the 32-year trap survey. Evidence suggests that recruitment failure is partially or mostly responsible for red porgy abundance declines, and, moreover, the regulation of harvest is unlikely to achieve sustainable management goals until recruitment increases.

The infinite problems attendant with mass public schooling requires evermore resilient and innovative theories to buttress an account of education that is socially defensible. While educational inequality could previously be attributed to developing nations due to their economic underdevelopment, developed nations too, with growing rapidity have to confront their internal burgeoning crises in education. It is against this backdrop that I focus on the possibility of expanding a notion of critical pedagogy by nesting the concept of cosmic pedagogy therein. As such, I draw on the Montessorian theory of cosmic education;Bazalukan theory of the formation of a planetary and cosmic personality; and Freireian critical pedagogy to discover the resonance and disharmony between these conceptual positions. Of the three theoretical frames, each can in their own right be considered a methodological approach to address particular problems in education and society at large. So it is with these theories and methods in mind that I suggest and reflect upon the ways that education might nudge us along in our attempt to be fully human and to occupy the space of intelligent matter in an ever expanding universe.

It is a serious allegation to suggest that through perpetuating inequality in a society, we violate students’ rights, particularly the inalienable and unassailable right of human dignity. By infringing upon human dignity, we unleash the potential to tolerate poverty and unemployment, we transgress language and religious rights, and we accommodate inequality. In this context, it becomes apparent to ask the question: How could students utilize critical agency to mitigate the effects of capitalist hegemony and ideology, to bring a measure of equality in a South Africa classroom, community and society? This research question serves to highlight the plight of disadvantaged and marginal students in the schooling system as they are the most vulnerable and threatened participants in the schooling experience, whose human rights are brought into question every time they encounter the schooling situation. These students often have to contend with sub par realities in the dimensions of education resourcing and educational achievement which further marginalize them in society. Poverty sets them apart from their more affluent peers in the society as they do not display the level of success envisioned by curriculum planners and administrators. But poverty to the exclusion of capitalist hegemony would be surmountable. Since ruling class hegemony is so pervasive and intrusive in the lives of economically, culturally, and linguistically marginal students, they are measured against the markers of values, beliefs, norms and standards that are alien to their lived realities and experiences. The omnipresence of capitalist or ruling class hegemony makes it almost insurmountable in overcoming poverty and inequality. Through the process of collaborative action research entrenched in a philosophical tradition, the researcher aims to address the central research question. The focus of the project will be to investigate the indicators of critical agency in students and whether students are able to identify the causes and effects of their current realities in order to devise strategies to positively transform certain realities. Further to this, the investigation seeks to reveal whether critical agency is able to expose the character of the students in becoming individuals, critical thinkers who strive for personal freedom and equality, as they are confronted with the stark reality of their lived experiences (specifically the causes, and effects of their lives and the possibility for change).

Managed reef fish in the Atlantic Ocean of the southeastern United States (SEUS) support a multi-billion dollar industry. There is a broad interest in locating and protecting spawning fish from harvest, to enhance productivity and reduce the potential for overfishing. We assessed spatiotemporal cues for spawning for six species from four reef fish families, using data on individual spawning condition collected by over three decades of regional fishery-independent reef fish surveys, combined with a series of predictors derived from bathymetric features. We quantified the size of spawning areas used by reef fish across many years and identified several multispecies spawning locations. We quantitatively identified cues for peak spawning and generated predictive maps for Gray Triggerfish (Balistes capriscus), White Grunt (Haemulon plumierii), Red Snapper (Lutjanus campechanus), Vermilion Snapper (Rhomboplites aurorubens), Black Sea Bass (Centropristis striata), and Scamp (Mycteroperca phenax). For example, Red Snapper peak spawning was predicted in 24.7-29.0°C water prior to the new moon at locations with high curvature in the 24-30 m depth range off northeast Florida during June and July. External validation using scientific and fishery-dependent data collections strongly supported the predictive utility of our models. We identified locations where reconfiguration or expansion of existing marine protected areas would protect spawning reef fish. We recommend increased sampling off southern Florida (south of 27° N), during winter months, and in high-relief, high current habitats to improve our understanding of timing and location of reef fish spawning off the southeastern United States.

Abnormal processing of somatosensory inputs in the central nervous system (central sensitization) is the mechanism accounting for the enhanced pain sensitivity in the skin surrounding tissue injury (secondary hyperalgesia). Secondary hyperalgesia shares clinical characteristics with neurogenic hyperalgesia in patients with neuropathic pain. Abnormal brain responses to somatosensory stimuli have been found in patients with hyperalgesia as well as in normal subjects during experimental central sensitization. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of gabapentin, a drug effective in neuropathic pain patients, on brain processing of nociceptive information in normal and central sensitization states. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in normal volunteers, we studied the gabapentin-induced modulation of brain activity in response to nociceptive mechanical stimulation of normal skin and capsaicin-induced secondary hyperalgesia. The dose of gabapentin was 1,800 mg per os, in a single administration. We found that (11 gabapentin reduced the activations in the bilateral operculoinsular cortex, independently of the presence of central sensitization; (i) gabapentin reduced the activation in the brainstem, only during central sensitization; (iii) gabapentin suppressed stimulus-induced deactivations, only during central sensitization; this effect was more robust than the effect on brain activation. The observed drug-induced effects were not due to changes in the baseline fMRI signal. These findings indicate that gabapentin has a measurable antinociceptive effect and a stronger antihyperalgesic effect most evident in the brain areas undergoing deactivation, thus supporting the concept that gabapentin is more effective in modulating nociceptive transmission when central sensitization is present. deactivation | fMRI | hyperalgesia | nociceptive system
