Zinc, a vital trace element, holds significant importance in numerous physiological processes within the body. It participates in over 300 enzymatic reactions, metabolic functions, regulation of gene expression, apoptosis and immune modulation, thereby demonstrating its essential role in maintaining overall health and well-being. While zinc deficiency is associated with significant health risks, an excess of this trace element can also lead to harmful effects. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 6.7 to 15 mg per day are referred to be the dietary reference value. An excess of the recommended daily intake may result in symptoms such as anemia, neutropenia and zinc-induced copper deficiency. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) defines the tolerable upper intake level (UL) as 25 mg per day, whereas the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) allows 40 mg per day. This review will summarize the current knowledge regarding the calculation of UL and other health risks associated with zinc. For example, zinc intake is not limited to oral consumption; other routes, such as inhalation or topical application, may also pose risks of zinc intoxication.

The use of sewage sludge as a soil improver has been promoted in agroecosystems. However, sludges can contain toxic trace elements because of suboptimal wastewater treatment. Nonetheless, field studies investigating the negative effects of these practices on pollinators are lacking. We collected honeybees from an area where sewage sludge use is widespread, and one where it is precluded. Trace elements in soils and bees were quantified. Cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury, and nickel were investigated because they were the least correlated elements to each other and are known to be toxic. Their levels were related to oxidative stress and energy biomarkers, midgut epithelial health, body size and wing asymmetry of honeybees. We found increased carbohydrate content in sites with higher cadmium levels, increased histological damage to the midgut epithelium in the sewage sludge area, and the presence of dark spherites in the epithelium of bees collected from the sites with the highest lead levels. Finally, we found that honeybees with the highest lead content were smaller, and that wing fluctuating asymmetry increased in sites with increasing levels of mercury. Pigmented and non-pigmented rice varieties (grown in different areas) were collected in China, Yunnan, to investigate the content of macro-, trace elements and potentially toxic elements (PTEs), and to assess the health risk associated with dietary intake. The order of elemental concentrations in rice was Mn > Zn > Fe > Cu > Se for trace elements, P > K > Mg > Ca > Na for macro elements, and Cr > As > Cd for PTEs. Rice with a high concentration of essential elements also associated with a high content of PTEs. In addition, higher content of Cr, Mn and Na were found in pigmented rice. The health risk assessment showed that the daily intake of all elements was below the tolerable limit (UL). Moreover the intake of Fe, Zn and Se was far from sufficient for the nutrient requirement. The PTEs in rice dominated the health risk. Of concern is that this rice consumption is likely to contribute to carcinogenic risks in the long term and that adults are at higher health risk from pigmented rice compared to non-pigmented rice. This study delves into the intricate interplay between ocean acidification (OA), metal bioaccumulation, and cellular responses using mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) as bioindicators. For this purpose, environmentally realistic concentrations of isotopically labelled metals (Cd, Cu, Ag, Ce) were added to investigate whether the OA increase would modify metal bioaccumulation and induce adverse effects at the cellular level. The study reveals that while certain elements like Cd and Ag might remain unaffected by OA, the bioavailability of Cu and Ce could potentially escalate, leading to amplified accumulation in marine organisms. The present findings highlight a significant rise in Ce concentrations within different mussel organs under elevated pCO 2 conditions, accompanied by an increased isotopic fractionation of Ce ( 140/142 Ce), suggesting a heightened potential for metal accumulation under OA. The results suggested that OA influenced metal accumulation in the gills of mussels. Conversely, metal accumulation in the digestive gland was unaffected by OA. The exposure to both trace metals and OA affects the biochemical responses of M. galloprovincialis, leading to increased metabolic capacity, changes in energy reserves, and alterations in oxidative stress markers, but the specific effects on other biomarkers (e.g., lipid peroxidation, some enzymatic responses or acetylcholinesterase activity) were not uniform, suggesting complex interactions between the stressors and the biochemical pathways in the mussels., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2024 The Authors. Infant cereals, one of the first solid foods introduced to infants, have been reported to pose risks to human health because they contain toxic elements and an excess of essential elements. The objective of this study was to assess the cancer and non-cancer risk of exposure to essential and toxic elements in infant cereal in Brazil. In our analyses, we included data from 18 samples of infant cereals made from different raw materials and estimated the incremental lifetime cancer risks and non-cancer hazard quotients (HQs) for their consumption. Rice cereal is particularly concerning because it is immensely popular and usually contains high levels of inorganic arsenic. In addition to arsenic, we assessed aluminum, boron, barium, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, manganese, nickel, selenium, silver, strontium, and zinc. The cancer risk was highest for rice cereal, which was also found to have an HQ > 1 for most of the tested elements. Inorganic As was the element associated with the highest cancer risk in infant cereal. All of the infant cereals included in this research contained at least one element with an HQ > 1. The essential and non-essential elements that presented HQ > 1 more frequently were zinc and cadmium, respectively. The cancer and non-cancer risks could potentially be decreased by reducing the amount of toxic and essential elements (when in excess), and public policies could have a positive influence on risk management in this complex scenario.

The increase in trace element concentrations in the aquatic environment due to anthropogenic activities, urges the need for their monitoring and potential toxicity, persistence, bioaccumulation, and biomagnification at different trophic levels. Gilthead seabream is a species of commercial importance in the Mediterranean Sea, both for the aquaculture and fisheries sectors, however very little is known about their trace element contamination accumulation and the resulting effect on their health status. In the present study, 135 juveniles were collected from seven coastal lagoons known to be essential nursery areas for this species. We measured seventeen different inorganic contaminants at the individual level in fish muscle (namely Al, As, Be, Bi, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Li, Ni, Pb, Rb, Sb, Sr, Ti, Tl and Zn). Our results revealed the accumulation of multiple trace elements in individuals and distinct contamination signatures between lagoons which might lead to contrasted quality as nurseries for juveniles of numerous ecologically and economically relevant fish species in addition to seabreams. We further evaluated the potential adverse effect of these complex contamination mixtures on the liver (the main organ implicated in the metabolism of xenobiotics) and red muscle (a highly metabolic organ) using a proteomic approach. Alterations in cellular organization pathways and protein transport were detected in both tissues (albeit they were not similarly regulated). Chromosome organization and telomere maintenance in the liver appeared to be affected by contaminant mixture which could increase mortality, age-related disease risk and shorter lifetime expectancy for these juveniles. Red muscle proteome also demonstrated an upregulation of pathways involved in metabolism in response to contamination which raises the issue of potential energy allocation trade-offs between the organisms' main functions such as reproduction and growth. Ferroptosis is a unique form of programmed cell death driven by iron-dependent phospholipid peroxidation that was proposed in recent years. It plays an important role in processes of various trace element-related diseases and is regulated by redox homeostasis and various cellular metabolic pathways (iron, amino acids, lipids, sugars), as well as disease-related signaling pathways. Some limited pioneering studies have demonstrated ferroptosis as a mechanism for the health effects of essential trace elements and potentially toxic trace elements, with crosstalk among them. The aim of this review is to bring together research articles and identify key direct and indirect evidence regarding essential trace elements (iron, selenium, zinc, copper, chromium, manganese) and potentially toxic trace elements (arsenic, aluminum, mercury) and their possible roles in ferroptosis. Anthropic potentially toxic element (PTE) releases can lead to persistent pollution in soil. Monitoring PTEs by their detection and quantification on large scale is of great interest. The vegetation exposed to PTEs can exhibit a reduction of physiological activities, structural damage … Such vegetation trait changes impact the spectral signature in the reflective domain 0.4-2.5 μm. The objective of this study is to characterize the impact of PTEs on the spectral signature of two pine species (Aleppo and Stone pines) in the reflective domain and ensure their assessment. The study focuses on nine PTEs: As, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Zn. The spectra are measured by an in-field spectrometer and an aerial hyperspectral instrument on a former ore processing site. They are completed by measurements related to vegetation traits at needle and tree scales (photosynthetic pigments, dry matter, morphometry …) to define the most sensitive vegetation parameter to each PTE in soil. A result of this study is that chlorophylls and carotenoids are the most correlated to PTE contents. Context-specific spectral indices are specified and used to assess metal contents in soil by regression. These new vegetation indices are compared at needle and canopy scales to literature indices. Lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), chromium (Cr), and nickel (Ni) are poisonous, widely distributed, persistent, and transferable to crops, posing potential health risks. This study aims to assess the potential health risks of those elements in rice collected from North-Central Vietnam: Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, and Ha Tinh provinces. Element analysis was performed on rice harvested in November 2020 by ICP-MS. The estimated daily intake (EDI), target hazard quotient (THQ), non-carcinogenic hazard index (HI), and target carcinogenic risk (TR) were used to assess potential health risks for different population groups. The highest element levels (mg kg -1 dry weight) were observed for Cr (0.30 ± 0.11), As (0.17 ± 0.025) and for Pb (0.24 ± 0.013) in Thanh Hoa, and for Cd (0.088 ± 0.015) in Ha Tinh. Strong links were observed between geological formations, mining activities and Cr in rice (Thanh Hoa), or industrial activities and Ni accumulation in rice (Hung Nguyen and Ky Anh districts). Children had greater EDIs than adults, with As having a higher EDI than RfD. Rice THQs indicated a risk trend: Thanh Hoa > Ha Tinh > Nghe An, with As being a significant contributor to HIs. Cr and Cd were significant risk factors and HIs in female children were 1.5 times higher than in other groups. Based on TR values for Ni and Pb, a potential carcinogenic risk to rice eaters was observed, particularly Ni. The data revealed a significant human health risk (both non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic) connected with rice consumption. The optimized three-step sequential extraction procedure for the fractionation of micro- and macroelements, was conducted to determine fractional characteristics of PTEs (potentially toxic elements) in surface sediments of rivers in the Vlasina watershed. The sequential extraction results, which enable the evaluation of mobility of the studied elements, have indicated that Zn, Ni, Cu, Cr, and As can be considered slightly mobile, whereas Pb, Mn, Cd, and Co were regarded as possibly mobile elements. Lead was dominantly bounded (specifically adsorbed or co-precipitated) to iron and manganese oxides (up to 80%) and may be released by reduction. Since the content of the exchangeable fraction (F1) is an indicator for anthropogenic impact on the aquatic environment, a low percentage (0-8%) of studied toxic elements in this fraction indicated that these elements have lithogenic origin in most sampling locations in the area of study. Except for Pb, the substantial positive correlations between Al and other elements showed that studied elements came primarily from terrigenous sources. Although the values obtained for the risk assessment code (RAC) indicated a slightly increased mobility of some elements (up to 22.44%), the values of the modified risk assessment code (mRAC), which include toxic effects on the environment, showed there is no danger of pollution by studied elements (all values were < 1%). Our recommendation is to use mRAC instead of RAC in ecochemical studies and assessment of the degree of sediment and soil pollution, because mRAC includes toxic effects of elements. Based on ATI values, river sediments show no toxic to a low toxic degree. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a absorção e a capacidade de translocação de metais pesados do solo para os grãos de soja e arroz. O experimento foi realizado em casa de vegetação, em Latossolo Vermelho distroférrico, proveniente de Município de Paulínia, SP. As amostras de solo foram coletadas em sete pontos e organizadas em função da distância de uma fábrica emissora de poluente. O delineamento utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado, com quatro repetições. Raízes, parte aérea e grãos foram submetidos à digestão por via úmida. A concentração dos metais pesados foi determinada por ICP-OES. Os teores de cádmio e cobre no grão estiveram em níveis adequados para ambas as culturas, enquanto os teores de manganês e zinco apresentaram-se em excesso, tendo acompanhado os níveis de contaminação do solo, com possibilidade de atingir níveis mais altos da cadeia trófica. As raízes limitaram a translocação de cádmio, cobre, ferro e chumbo para a parte aérea de ambas as culturas. Mesmo com a translocação limitada pelas raízes, o chumbo apresentou-se em altos teores nos grãos de soja, e pode, também, como o manganês e o zinco, atingir a cadeia alimentar.The aim of this work was to evaluate the absorption and capacity of translocation of heavy metals from the soil to rice and soybean grains. Experiment was carried out in a greenhouse using a dystrophic Typic Hapludox soil from the district of Paulínia, SP. Soil samples were collected in seven different points and were organized according to the distance from a factory, source of pollution. The experimental design used was the completely randomized, with four replications. The roots, aerial leaves and grains were submitted to humid digestion. The concentrations of heavy metals were determined by ICP-OES. Cadmium and copper concentrations in the grains were at normal levels for both cultures, however manganese and zinc concentrations were in excess, according to the levels of soil contamination, possibly being able to reach top trophic levels. The roots limited the translocation of cadmium, copper, iron and lead to the aerial parts of both cultures. Although the translocation of lead was also limited by the roots, it was present in high concentrations in soy grains and, well as manganese and zinc, it can reach the food chain.

The susceptibility to trace metals and legacy POPs is different between terrestrial and marine mammals. In this study, we established the first cell line from Indo-Pacific finless porpoises and compared the cellular responses of skin fibroblast cells from Pygmy killer whales, Pantropic spotted dolphins, Indo-Pacific finless porpoises, mice, and humans following exposure to copper, methylmercury, cadmium, PCB126, PCB153, and BDE47 to better understand the interspecies sensitivities of mammals to chemical pollutants. We conducted a risk assessment by comparing no-observed effect concentrations (NOEC), lowest-observed effect concentrations (LOEC), and half maximal effective concentrations (EC50) from cell viability assays and previously reported pollutant body burdens in mammals. Based on the in vitro data, Indo-Pacific finless porpoises were more sensitive to copper and methylmercury than other mammals. PCB153 exposure reduced cell viability in all mammals except humans, while PCB126 was more potent, with 13.33 μg/mL exposure reducing cell viability in all mammals. In contrast, BDE47 exposure reduced cell viability only in terrestrial mammals in addition to pantropic spotted dolphin. Based on the in vitro data and the natural context of metal concentrations, both methylmercury and cadmium posed a higher risk to cetaceans than human, while copper posed a lower risk to cetaceans. All three legacy POPs (PCB126, PCB153, and BDE47) posed minor risk to cetaceans for short-term exposure. This study demonstrated that a species-specific in vitro model may provide more accurate information on the potential risk of pollutants to mammals. Environmental pollution of trace elements has become of main concern due to the adverse effects. To estimate the impact of PM 2.5 -bound trace elements on human health, a time-stratified case-crossover study has been designed to examine the short-term associations between 28 elements and asthma hospitalizations from January 2019 to November 2021 in Xiamen, China. This research summarized the major components that pose health risks in different seasons and took risk assessment for different groups. We found that an inter-quartile range (IQR) increase of Ca, Fe, Mn, Pd, Si, and Ti was positively associated with the incidence of asthma in the lag of 0-4 days. In winter, the elements that predisposed the population to asthma attack were the most, such as Al, Ba, Ca, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mn, Pd, Si, and Ti, and these elements are at higher risk for longer periods of time. The discrepancy in risk levels and major elements of asthma diagnosis among various age groups were also found in this work. Toxic trace elements represent an ongoing environmental problem in aquatic ecosystems. However, a lack of quantitative analysis and accurate evaluation has led to unguided control and water management strategies. Lake Yangzong is the main freshwater resource for nearly one million people in Yunnan Province in southwestern China. It has been heavily contaminated in recent years by significant anthropogenic activities including an industrial phosphor-gypsum spill, sewage effluent, and chemical remediation processes. Herein, we combine eco-environmental indices with multiple statistical analyses to determine the ecological risk and degree of contamination of 11 toxic trace elements in the upper sediments of the lakebed. Local geochemical background concentrations were determined using robust regression models developed from sediment core data. Pollution indices (EF/PLI) indicate that severe As contamination was centralized in the southwestern part of the lake. Other toxic trace elements (e.g., Cd, Cu, Pb) are slightly to moderately enriched, and progressively decrease from the northwestern to the southeastern areas of the lake. A more accurate and sensitive index (PCR) was proposed herein, suggesting that contamination was dominated by As and Pb in different lake sections. The northern section of the lake and the southwestern bay exhibited higher contaminant levels than other regions of the lake. Bio-toxic indices (ERF/PERI) indicate that As and Cd pose a high ecological risk, whereas Cu and Pb pose a low risk to biota. Aquatic hyphomycetes are fungi with a fundamental ecological role in forested streams. These organisms are responsible for cycling of nutrients in aquatic environments. However, their structure and composition can be affected when exposed to certain pollutants. Arsenic (As) is a trace element with high toxicity for the aquatic biota. Here we evaluated the effects of different concentrations of Arsenite (AsIII) and Arsenate (AsV) on aquatic hyphomycetes assemblages. To test As toxicity, we conditioned Nectandra megapotamica leaves in a stream and after this period, we incubated leaf discs with stream water and different concentrations of AsIII and AsV. Species richness was negatively affected by both As form. Likewise, the hyphomycetes assemblages presented variation in the composition of species. However, the sporulation rates were not influenced by As. The As showed toxicity on species of hyphomycetes more sensitive, remaining only in species tolerant to its toxicity. In this way, As generated a change in the aquatic hyphomycetes composition. We observed that As had a negative effect on the aquatic hyphomycetes assemblages, regardless of the chemical form. Our results point to the toxicity of this element and its effects on a group that is fundamental to the streams ecosystems functioning.

Birds are vulnerable to metal pollution, which can serve as indicators of environmental safety monitoring. In this study, we evaluated three non-essential (Pb, Cd, and As) and two essential (Cu and Zn) trace elements of living (only feathers) and deceased (feathers and tissues) Grey-cheeked Fulvetta (Alcippe morrisonia) at a highly polluted mine tailings and a reference site. Five metal concentrations in the feathers of living Grey-cheeked Fulvettas were higher at the mine site. Among these, the levels of Cd and Pb in most feathers exceeded the threshold, resulting in an ecotoxicological concern. The correlation analysis suggested that feathers from Grey-cheeked Fulvettas might be useful bioindicators for local metal contamination assessment. The toxicological effects of trace metals on Grey-cheeked Fulvetta might affect its leadership ability. Heavy metals and metalloids like cadmium, arsenic, mercury, and lead are frequently found in the soil, water, food, and atmosphere; trace amounts can cause serious health issues to the human organism. These toxic trace elements (TTE) affect almost all the organs, mainly the heart, kidney, liver, lungs, and the nervous system, through increased free radical formation, DNA damage, lipid peroxidation, and protein sulfhydryl depletion. This work aims to advance our understanding of the mechanisms behind lipid accumulation via increased free fatty acid levels in circulation due to TTEs. The increased lipid level in the myocardium worsens the heart function. This dysregulation of the lipid metabolism leads to damage in the structure of the myocardium, inclusive fibrosis in cardiac tissue, myocyte apoptosis, and decreased contractility due to mitochondrial dysfunction. Additionally, it is discussed herein how exposure to cadmium decreases the heart rate, contractile tension, the conductivity of the atrioventricular node, and coronary flow rate. Arsenic may induce atherosclerosis by increasing platelet aggregation and reducing fibrinolysis, as exposure interferes with apolipoprotein (Apo) levels, resulting in the rise of the Apo-B/Apo-A1 ratio and an elevated risk of acute cardiovascular events. Concerning mercury and lead, these toxicants can cause hypertension, myocardial infarction, and carotid atherosclerosis, in association with the generation of free radicals and oxidative stress. This review offers a complete overview of the critical factors and biomarkers of lipid and TTE-induced cardiotoxicity useful for developing future protective interventions.

Dose-dependent effects of chronic Pb exposure-induced injuries, especially on the trace elements and gut microbiota in mice, have not been explored. In the present study, we investigated these aspects using C57BL/6 mouse models that were exposed to Pb via drinking water with Pb concentrations of 0.1, 0.5, and 1.0 g/L for 8 weeks. The results showed that with the increase in chronic Pb exposure dose, the Pb levels in the blood and tissues, Zn levels in the kidney and brain were elevated, and the levels of bone Zn, kidney Fe, brain Mg, Ca, and Fe, renal catalase activity, and glutathione levels, as well as the expression of colonic zonula occludens-1 and occludin, decreased with a strong linear correlation. Moreover, the relative abundance of Marvinbryantia and Ruminococcus 1 increased, while that of Lactobacillus and Roseburia decreased linearly with the Pb exposure dose. PICRUSt analysis revealed that chronic Pb exposure had a greater impact on the metabolism of macronutrients, trace elements, and neurodegenerative injury. These findings suggest that chronic Pb exposure disrupts trace element levels in tissues, especially in the brain, and induces gut dysbiosis in a dose-dependent manner, which is different from the dose-effect of acute Pb toxicity., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Ltd. Several experiments were performed using larvae of Paracentrotus lividus (Lamarck, 1816) in order to determine the consequences of different chronic contamination with mixtures of (i) fifteen trace elements from concentrations measured in the world ocean seawater, and (ii) seven trace elements from contamination resulting from mining. To predict the impact of increased marine pollution, higher concentrations were also used. These bioassays were conducted using spawners collected from Calvi (reference site, Corsica), and Albo (mining area, Corsica). The effects of trace elements have been studied on the entire larval development. The results show wider arms and delayed development as the number and concentration of trace elements increases. Therefore, the synergy between the different trace elements is of paramount importance with regard to the impact on organisms. Probably due to a hormesis phenomenon, larvae contaminated with seven trace elements at average concentrations developed more quickly. This work also highlighted the importance of the origin of spawners in ecotoxicological studies. Copper sulfate (CuSO 4 ) is widely used in the control of algal blooms. Cu can promote or inhibit algal growth, while also affecting trace element uptake, therefore, the response mechanisms of algae cells under Cu 2+ interference should be studied. In this study, wild-type Chlamydomonas reinhardtii ( C. reinhardtii ) and wall-less mutant C. reinhardtii were selected as the research objects. Except for the cell wall, these two algae were physiologically the same. While manipulating the concentration of Cu, the accumulation of Cu, Fe, Zn, and Mn by the two algal cell types was studied. The cell wall hindered the accumulation of Cu by cells and alleviated the toxicity of Cu to C. reinhardtii . The addition of Cu increased the accumulation of Fe by both cell types. In an environment with excess Cu, the total amount of Zn and Mn accumulated by cells also increased. On the one hand, this may be due to the synergistic and antagonistic effects of trace elements in the adsorption and uptake process, and on the other hand, it may be due to the changes in metal speciation in the culture medium. In addition, the difference in the total accumulation of various trace elements between wild-type and wall-less-type C. reinhardtii may be due to the structure and function differences between cell wall and cell membrane. At the same time, by measuring the changes in the levels of glutathione (GSH) in algal cells, the relevant mechanisms underlying the algae's uptake of trace elements by algae were further explored.

Background: Zanthoxylum bungeanum pericarps (ZBP) are commonly used as food additives and traditional herbal medicines. Several mineral elements are known to have important physiological functions in organisms, whereas others are reported to have toxic effects. We determined levels of macro elements (Mg, S and Ca), essential trace elements (B, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Se and Mo) and toxic elements (Ni, Al, Cr, As, Cd, Hg and Pb) in the pericarps of 19 Z. bungeanum cultivars. Hazard index values and incremental lifetime cancer risks were calculated to express health risks associated with pericarp consumption. Moreover, several chemometric analyses based on the mineral elements were used to distinguish Z. bungeanum cultivars., Results: The concentrations of 17 determined elements in the pericarps were ranked: Ca > Mg > S > Fe > Al > Mn > Zn > B > Cu > Ni > Pb > Cr > Mo > As > Cd > Hg > Se. The elements Zn, Cr and As had the highest variations in their concentrations. Cu, Mn, Se, Zn, Al, As, Cd, Cr, Hg, Ni and Pb posed some non-cancer risks, while As and Cd posed cancer risks. Mn, Fe, Zn, and Al were chosen as critical element markers for assessing ZBP using chemometric analyses., Conclusion: Chemometric analyses could highlight mineral concentration differentiation among the 19 cultivars. The Z. bungeanum cultivar Z12 (from Wudu, Gansu) is best for producing ZBP, and cultivar Z18 (Guanling, Guizhou) can be a reference to classify and evaluate ZBP quality. In this study, some persistent trace elements and critical raw materials were investigated in grapevines contaminated with Pb-Zn mining effluents. The persistent trace elements under certain conditions remain without any change in form in the environment over long periods. The critical raw materials are the ones that have economic importance and have the risks associated with their supply. The health risks of persistent trace elements and critical raw materials in the leaves of grapevine that are consumed by humans were determined. The highest persistent trace elements concentrations followed the order of root > stem > leaf for Mn, Cu, Cd, Ni, and Cr while root > leaf > stem for Zn and leaf > root > stem for Pb. The maximum critical raw material concentrations for Co and V followed the order of root > stem > leaf. For Sb and La, these were leaf > root > stem and root > stem > leaf, respectively. The maximum critical raw materials concentrations for W was leaf > stem = root. The total maximum carcinogenic value was 0.146 for Cd while the total minimum carcinogenic value was 0.0054 for Pb. In this study, potential carcinogenic risk values in terms of ingestion of contaminated soil (Cr, Cd, and Ni) and dietary take of grapevine leaves (Ni, Cr, Cd, and Pb) are higher than acceptable levels (1 × 10 -4  - 1 × 10 -6 ). Maximum cancer risk on human health was determined as dietary intake of grapevine leaves. When hazard quotient for dietary (HQ die ), hazard quotient for ingestion (HQ ing ), and hazard quotient for inhalation (HQ inh ) values ​​of critical raw materials were examined, the maximum values ​​were observed for children. Also, the highest hazard quotient for dermal (HQ der ) value was determined for men. The hazard index and total hazard index values were >1 for critical raw materials. As a result, values >1 indicated potential non-carcinogenic human health risk associated with the consumption of grapevines contaminated with mining effluents. The aim of this study was to assess the risk to consumers associated with the intake of toxic metals and other trace elements in diets that include the female gonads, testicles, and muscles of four popular freshwater fish species in Poland—common bream (Abramis brama L.), European perch (Perca fluviatilis L.), common roach (Rutilus rutilus L.), and northern pike (Esox Lucius L.). The following methods were used to determine the elements: GF-AAS (Pb, Cd); CV-AAS (Hg); ICP-AES (Zn, Fe, Mn, Cu, Ni, Li, Cr, Al). The concentration of toxic elements (Hg, Cd, Pb) in the female gonads and testicles ranged from 0.004 ± 0.006 mg/kg (Cd) to 0.028 ± 0.018 mg/kg (Pb). Of the other elements, the lowest content was noted for Cr (0.122 ± 0.182 mg/kg) and the highest for Al (46.98 ± 31.89 mg/kg). The study confirmed that female gonads and testicles are a valuable source of essential trace elements (Zn, Fe). Considering the content of toxic elements, the raw material of female gonads and testicles posed no health risks (THQ < 1).

The study material was comprised of 23 samples of ashes generated after the combustion of conventional and alternative fuels combined with selected fractions of municipal waste. The analyses performed involved determining the total concentration of As, Al, Cr, Fe, Ni, and their bioaccessible, ion-exchange, and carbonate-bound fractions. It was found that all of the samples analysed may display an elevated level of susceptibility to the reduction processes, which undoubtedly increases the mobility of trace elements, including the toxic ones. The predominant elements were Al and Fe, whereas considerably lower concentrations were observed for Ni, Cr, and As. The percentage share of the ion-exchange and carbonate-bound fraction ranged from 49% of the total concentration for As to as much as 0.35% in the case of Fe. The calculated Risk Assessment Code index points to a high risk related to the presence of As, medium to low risk related to the presence of Ni and Cr, and low to no risk related to the presence of Fe and Al. The calculated values of the Ecological Risk Index, associated with the combustion of selected municipal waste fractions and low-quality hard coals, combusted individually or in combination with different types of wood, point to a very high ecological risk. This is mainly related to the high concentrations and toxicity of As.

In the article, the following were considered: classification of geochemical landscapes of the investigated territory, migration and accumulation of toxic chemical elements and their impact on human health. The research article was carried out in two directions: the first part-migration patterns of the chemical elements. The migration of chemical elements by landscape types has been identified, and a map has been developed showing the migration of chemical elements across the landscape. The second part of the article explores the toxicity of chemical elements that are common in the area and examines the relationship between the diseases observed in areas where the toxic elements are most commonly encountered and their effects on human health. The article is devoted to the study of the peculiarities of the geochemical transformation of landscapes in the research area (of the Kura intermountain basin) based on the patterns of concentration and migration of macro-compounds and trace elements found in samples of mountain rocks, soil, plants and water, for which a comparative method of research and the relationship of landscape components was used. For the first time, a medium-scale "Geochemical classification of landscapes" and then "map scheme of diseases caused by anomalous concentration of microelements" of this region were compiled. The article reveals the characteristic features of the compiled maps and the features of the geochemical transformation of the study area. The geochemistry of landscapes studies the patterns of migration of chemical elements in the Earth's geographical shell. It deals with patterns of substance migration in that shell of the Earth that is the place of human life. Acute exposure to trace metals (TMs) in water is hazardous to human health. The average concentrations (C avg. ) and carcinogenic (CAR) and non-carcinogenic (non-CAR) risks of eight TMs to World Health Organization's (WHO) guidelines and national standard limits (NSLs)were determined. The C avg. and (the range) of As, Hg, Cd, Pb, Co, Cr, Ni, and Zn were measured as 4.29 ± 0.57 μg L -1 (1.12-10.27 μg L -1 ), 0.22 ± 0.10 μg L -1 (ND-1.05 μg L -1 ), 0.31 ± 0.18 μg L -1 (ND-1.80 μg L -1 ), 4.66 ± 0.32 μg L -1 (0.10-14.22 μg L -1 ), 24.61 ± 4.65 μg L -1 (3.11-67.25 μg L -1 ), 16.86 ± 5.54 μg L -1 (5.12-34.61 μg L -1 ), 14.07 ± 4.37 μg L -1 (3.79-31.39 μg L -1 ), and 268.42 ± 75.82 (87.29-561.22 μg L -1 ), respectively. The C avg. of Co and Hg exceeded the WHO and NSLs. The non-CAR risk assessment was used to order the TMs according to the total target hazard quotient (TTHQ) As > Pb > Cr > Co > Zn > Hg > Ni > Cd. None of the investigated age groups are at risk As there is a low C avg of all trace metals (i.e., the THQ is > 1). The age groups were ranked based on THQ and incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) As < 1 year, >1-10 years, > 11-19 years, and > + 20 years. The ILCR of As for all the age groups was >10 -4 , whereas for Pb it was <10 -6 . Gynecological neoplasms pose a serious threat to women's health. It is estimated that in 2020, there were nearly 1.3 million new cases worldwide, from which almost 50% ended in death. The most commonly diagnosed are cervical and endometrial cancers; when it comes to infertility, it affects ~48.5 million couples worldwide and the number is continually rising. Ageing of the population, environmental factors such as dietary habits, environmental pollutants and increasing prevalence of risk factors may affect the reproductive potential in women. Therefore, in order to identify potential risk factors for these issues, attention has been drawn to trace elements. Trace mineral imbalances can be caused by a variety of causes, starting with hereditary diseases, finishing with an incorrect diet or exposure to polluted air or water. In this review, we aimed to summarize the current knowledge regarding trace elements imbalances in the case of gynecologic cancers as well as female fertility and during pregnancy.

This case study investigates the exposure of 119 Spanish women of reproductive age to 5 essential (Co, Cu, Mn, V, Zn) and 10 toxic (Ba, Be, Cs, Ni, Pb, Pt, Sb, Th, Al, U) elements and assesses their risk. The essential elements (Co, Cu, Mn, V, and Zn) showed average concentrations (GM: geometric mean) of 0.8, 35, 0.5, 0.2, and 347 μg/L, respectively. Five of the toxic elements (Ba, Cs, Ni, Al, U) exhibited detection frequencies of 100%. The GM concentrations of the novel toxic elements were 12 μg/L (Al), 0.01 μg/L (Pt), 0.02 μg/L (U), 0.12 μg/L (Th), 0.009 μg/L (Be) and 4 μg/L (Cs). The urine analysis was combined with a survey to assess any variations between subgroups and potential predictors of exposure to elements in the female population. Significant differences were obtained between the rural and urban areas studied for the toxic element Cs, with higher levels found in mothers living in urban areas. In relation to diet, statistically significantly higher levels of essential (Cu) and toxic (Ba) elements were detected in women with a high consumption of fish, while mothers who consumed a large quantity of legumes presented higher levels of the toxic element Ni ( p = 0.0134). In a risk-assessment context, hazard quotients (HQs) greater than 1 were only observed for the essential elements Zn and Cu in P95. No deficiency was found regarding the only essential element for which a biomonitoring equivalent for nutritional deficit is available (Zn). For the less-studied toxic elements (Al, Pt, U, Th, Be, and Cs), HQs were lower than 1, and thus, the health risk due to exposure to these elements is expected to be low for the female population under study.

Snacks or junk foods are a form of relatively small, packaged, ready-to-eat fast foods, usually taken not as a regular, but as a stopgap. However, contamination of snacks with trace elemental impurities may pose serious health risk to consumers. The main objective of the present study is to assess the toxicological risk of trace elements TEs (Co, Cu, Fe, and Zn) in commonly consumed snack/junk foods from Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, Southwest, Nigeria. A total of sixty snack food samples were purchased and assayed in replicates for Co, Cu, Fe, and Zn using atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Trace elements data were manipulated for simple descriptive and inferential statistics. The toxicological risk of metals was estimated for average daily dose (ADD), hazard quotient (HQ), hazard index (HI), and cancer risk (CR). Results showed Fe as the most abundant TE in the snacks showing insignificant mean concentrations (p > 0.05) varying from 38.10 ± 1.98 mg kg -1 (potato chip) to 71.25 ± 14.68 mg kg -1 (cashew nut). Cashew nut had the highest amounts of the TEs. The HQs of Co in all the snacks except corn flakes consumed by children were greater than the threshold limit of 1.0, indicating non-carcinogenic adverse effects. The CRs of Co in all the food samples exceeded the acceptable limit of 1.0 × 10 -4 , suggesting possible development of cancer by the consumers. Co is a trace metal of health issues in the snack/junk foods. The aim of the study was to use of geochemical, chemical, ecotoxicological and biological indicators for a comprehensive assessment of ecological risks related to the mobility, ecotoxicity and bioavailability of trace elements in the bottom sediment of the Rożnów reservoir. The study found three elements deserving attention in the sediments: cadmium, nickel and chromium. Cadmium proved to be the most mobile and bioavailable, although the total cadmium content and geochemical indicators did not reveal any risk to organisms. Geochemical indicators showed that the sediments are contaminated with nickel and chromium, but both elements had a low bioaccumulation factor. Fractional analysis also revealed relatively low mobility of Cr and Ni and a higher potential risk of bioavailability for nickel. Most of the tested sediment samples had low toxicity in relation to the tested organisms. For H. incongruens, 11% of the samples were non-toxic, 50% of the samples had low toxicity, and 39% of the samples were toxic. For A. fischeri, no toxicity was found in 7% of the samples, low toxicity in 76% of the samples and toxicity in 17% of the sediment samples. The As, Cd, Cu content in the F1 fraction correlated significantly positively with the content of these metals in mussel tissues. Both biotesting and chemical analysis can reveal a potential risk to aquatic organisms. In this paper 13 elements, both physiological and causing toxic effects, were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry in roots of 26 species of herbs used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. The herbs were purchased from online shop in two batches 1 year apart to verify the variability of elemental content in time. The multivariate statistical methods-multiple regression, canonical variates and interaction effect analysis-were applied to interpret the data and to show the relationships between elements and two batches of herb roots. The maximum permissible concentration of Cd (0.3 mg kg -1 ) was exceeded in 7 herb roots which makes 13% of all specimens. The multiple regression analysis revealed the significant relationships between elements: Mg with Sr; V with Pb, As and Ba; Mn with Pb; Fe with As and Ba; Co with Ni and Sr, Cu with Pb, Cd and As; Zn with Pb, Cd, As and Ba. The canonical variates analysis showed that the statistical inference should not be based solely on the type of herb or number of batch because of the underlying interaction effects between those two variables that may be a source of variability of the content of determined elements., (© 2021. Endometriosis is a chronic, estrogen-dependent, inflammatory condition that is defined as the presence of endometrial glands and stroma outside the uterine cavity. Despite the progress in research into the mechanisms leading to the development of endometriosis, its cause has not yet been established. It seems to be possible that the formation of oxidative stress may be one of the main causes of the development of endometriosis. There is much research that studies the potential role of trace elements in the appearance of endometrial-like lesions. Most studies focus on assessing the content of selected trace elements in the blood, urine, or peritoneal fluid in women with endometriosis. Meanwhile, little is known about the content of these elements in endometrial-like implants, which may be helpful in developing the theory of endometriosis. Investigations that are more comprehensive are needed to confirm a hypothesis that some trace elements play a role in the pathomechanism of endometriosis.

Agricultural soils are receiving higher inputs of trace elements (TEs) from anthropogenic activities. Application of nanoparticles (NPs) in agriculture as nano-pesticides and nano-fertilizers has gained rapid momentum worldwide. The NPs-based fertilizers can facilitate controlled-release of nutrients which may be absorbed by plants more efficiently than conventional fertilizers. Due to their large surface area with high sorption capacity, NPs can be used to reduce excess TEs uptake by plants. The present review summarizes the effects of NPs on plant growth, photosynthesis, mineral nutrients uptake and TEs concentrations. It also highlights the possible mechanisms underlying NPs-mediated reduction of TEs toxicity at the soil and plant interphase. Nanoparticles are effective in immobilization of TEs in soil through alteration of their speciation and improving soil physical, chemical, and biological properties. At the plant level, NPs reduce TEs translocation from roots to shoots by promoting structural alterations, modifying gene expression, and improving antioxidant defense systems. However, the mechanisms underlying NPs-mediated TEs uptake and toxicity reduction vary with NPs type, mode of application, time of NPs exposure, and plant conditions (e.g., species, cultivars, and growth rate). The review emphasizes that NPs may provide new perspectives to resolve the problem of TEs toxicity in crop plants which may also reduce the food security risks. However, the potential of NPs in metal-contaminated soils is only just starting to be realized, and additional studies are required to explore the mechanisms of NPs-mediated TEs immobilization in soil and uptake by plants. The city of Manaus is the biggest industrial city of the north Brazilian region, and a haphazard urbanization process characterizes it. The continuous urbanization and industrialization processes have increased the levels of trace elements in the urban environment and have posed great threat on human health. It is, then, essential to assess the pollution levels and the potential risks of the trace elements presence in urban soils. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the status of trace elements soils pollution and their human health risks to the population of Manaus City. Twenty-two soil samples were collected from the surface layer (0-20 cm), and the contents of Ba, Cr, Mn, Zn, Co, Ni, Cu, Cd and Pb were analyzed. Results showed the predominance of kaolinite, gibbsite and goethite as the main minerals of the clay fraction. The trace elements contents were affected by both natural sources and anthropic activities such as industrial operations and vehicular emissions. The soil contamination assessment by Enrichment Factor showed the existence of eight samples classified as considerably contaminated and two samples classified as highly contaminated. Geoaccumulation index also showed the existence of eight samples exhibiting considerable contamination and one sample showing high contamination. The non-carcinogenic health risk was considered low (HI < 1) to both children and adults. Arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), beryllium (Be), nickel (Ni), selenium (Se), and thallium (Tl) are reportedly notorious toxic contents of make-ups, with potential to cause cancer and chronic kidney disease, warranting investigation on their toxic effects. One hundred female university students were randomly selected as consistent users of make-ups for upward of 3 years. The serum/urine levels of the 8 elements were regressed against the kidney functions (estimated glomerular rate, eGFR) of the subjects. At coefficient of - 0.009, As had insignificant (0.518) level. The coefficient for Cd was - .155 and insignificant (0.423). At coefficient of - 039, Pb level was insignificant (0.595). The coefficient, 0.061, for Hg was insignificant (0.462). At - 1.585, the coefficient of Be was insignificant (0.292). The coefficient for Ni, 1.384, was insignificant (0.354). At - .002, the coefficient of Se was insignificant (0.635). The coefficient, 0.039, for Tl was significant at 5% (0.015). This finding internally validated the mean serum Tl level, 201.4900 ± 20.63316 μg/L, which was much higher than the normal level of < 2 µg/L and within the toxic range of > 200 µg/L. A policy is needed to address the use of make-ups containing Tl.

To investigate the source identification of soil elements and risk assessment of trace elements under different land-use types, 32 pairs of topsoil samples (0-20 cm) were collected from two subcatchments in the Liudaogou watershed. The areas of the two subcatchments were 0.343 and 0.045 km 2 , respectively, and the two subcatchments were divided into four land-use types, including bare land, forestland (FL), grassland (GL) and check-dam land (CDL). The results showed that the coefficients of variations of all soil elements indicated moderate spatial variation. The mean concentrations of Cu, K, Mn, Na and Zn under different land-use types exceeded the soil background values. The results of correlation analysis and principal component analysis illustrated that high homology existed between Cu and Mn in subcatchment 1, and the main source was from coal mines and smelters. Consistent sources of Zn and K in subcatchment 1 were mainly fertilizers and sewage sludge. Cu, K, Mg, Mn, Na and Zn in subcatchment 2 had similar sources, mainly mining and smelting plants, fertilizers and sewage. In addition, Ca had high homology with Fe in two subcatchments, mainly from natural weathering. The enrichment factor values indicated that there was a certain degree of trace element pollution. The values of the pollution index and Nemerow integrated pollution index revealed that moderate pollution was mainly concentrated in FL, GL and CDL. The trace element pollution of GL and CDL may induce contamination of the food chain and threaten human health safety.

Pesticides and trace elements occur in complex mixtures in agroecosystems, affecting soil health and food security. Hence, it is necessary to determine their toxicity in field conditions and to develop monitoring approaches to assess conventional and organic agriculture. The aim of this research was to evaluate the associations between Allium cepa L. cytogenetic biomarkers and the realistic mixture of pesticides and trace elements found in soils of conventional, conversion, and organic crops in an intensive agricultural region in Colombia. Pesticide screening was conducted using GC-MS/MS and LC-MS/MS methods. Arsenic, cadmium, lead, and zinc were analyzed by ICP-MS; chromium, copper, nickel, and selenium by ICP-OES; and mercury by a direct analyzer. The meristematic cells in roots of Allium cepa L. were analyzed through microscopic observations to quantify cytogenetic effects. In conventional crops, 26 pesticides were detected in the soil samples, and those were below the limit of quantification in organic crops. The mean levels of As, Cd, Cr, Ni, Pb, and Se were also greater in soils of conventional crops compared to the organics. In addition, the biomarkers of cytotoxicity and genotoxicity appeared augmented in conventional samples, and those were correlated with pesticide and trace element concentrations, pollution indices, and hazard quotients. Subsequently, a discriminant function based on the mitotic index, chromosomal aberrations, and nuclear abnormalities was suitable to classify the samples by crop type. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) play an important role in improving plant tolerance and accumulation of zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd). The growth, physiology and absorption of elements and transport in Phragmites australis (P. australis) were investigated under Zn and Cd stress to identify the transport mechanisms of toxic trace elements (TE) under the influence of AMF. Thus, AMF were observed to alleviate the toxic effects of Zn and Cd on P. australis by increasing plant biomass and through different regulatory patterns under different TE concentrations. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) increased under Zn stress, and the activities of SOD, catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), and APX significantly increased under high concentrations of Cd. AMF differ in their strategies of regulating the transport of different metals under TE stress. Under Zn stress, the concentration of Zn in P. australis decreased by 10-57%, and the effect on Zn translocation factor (TF Zn ) was concentration-dependent. AMF increased the TF Zn under low concentration stress, but decreased under high concentration stress. Under Cd stress, the concentration of Cd increased by as much as 17-40%, and the TF Cd decreased. AMF were also found to change the interaction of Zn×Cd. In the absence of AMF, Cd exposure decreased the Zn concentrations in P. australis at Zn 100 mg/L and Zn 300 mg/L , while it increased the contents of Zn at Zn 700 mg/L . The opposite trend was observed following treatment with AMF. However, regardless of the concentration of Cd, the addition of Zn decreased the concentration of Cd in both treatments in both the presence and absence of AMF. Under different TE stress conditions, the regulation of metal elements by AMF in host plants does not follow a single strategy but a trade-off between different trends of transportations. During the last two decades, the use of soil amendments has gained high attention due to their role in governing trace element biogeochemistry in the soil. Majority of the studies dealing with soil amendments focused on the soil-plant transfer of trace elements, their compartmentation inside the plants and associated toxic effects. However, there is comparatively limited data regarding the effects of soil amendments on trace-element-induced oxidative stress (variations in stress and tolerance parameters) in plants. Therefore, this review, for the first time, critically elucidates the broad and specific trends in literature data of stress, tolerance and growth parameters under co-application of trace elements and soil amendments. For this purpose, a total of 3120 plant response items from literature data were collected/analyzed. The meta-analysis revealed an overall decrease in stress parameters (reactive oxygen species, membrane damage and lipid peroxidation), while an increase in tolerance parameters (antioxidants) and growth parameters (pigment contents). However, these general trends vary greatly with respect to different types of amendments, trace elements, plant species, plant organs and exposure cultures. In addition, the trends also varied for different types of response items of stress, tolerance and growth parameters (e.g., POD vs CAT, H 2 O 2 vs O 2 ). Manuscript critically discusses some mechanistic explanations for these general and specific trends in literature data. Finally, this review proposed key research gaps and important future perspectives. All the aspects discussed in this review have been strengthened with 23 Tables and 7 Figures. The research gaps and scientific queries established in this review based on meta-analysis of literature data will open new aspects of future research and discussion in the fields of ecotoxicology, stress physiology and remediation., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier B.V. The present review was conducted to highlight the major and trace elemental composition in surface sediments from the Nile River and Egyptian Red Sea coastal areas in terms of provenance, concentrations, pollution indices, and health hazards. Health hazard due to the exposure to selected elements via inhalation, ingestion, and dermal contact was calculated. The samples were subjected to neutron activation analysis. Bivariate and multivariate statistical analysis was employed. Significant amounts of V, Cr, and Zr are observed in Nile sediments. Whereas, considerable concentrations of Br and Ca were found in marine sediments. The concentrations of the other elements are in line with the corresponding values in upper continental crust. The outcomes of the pollution indices show some localized polluted sites (Helwan, Cairo, and Delta) in Nile sediments. Likewise, in Abu Ghusun area in marine ones. Overall, the hazard index of the investigated elements in the Nile and marine sediments for both studied age criteria is higher than the tolerable values (1 × 10 -6 - 1 × 10 -4 )., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Despite their popularity as a game species across North America, little is known about contaminant burdens in wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) inhabiting areas of environmental contamination, and their potential to expose human and wildlife consumers. We compared trace element concentrations and radionuclide activity in muscle and liver tissues of turkeys inhabiting the Savannah River Site (USA), an area with known anthropogenic contaminant inputs, with turkeys from uncontaminated areas offsite. In addition, we tested breast feathers from a subset of individuals for mercury (Hg) to assess the viability of nonlethal sampling for quantifying Hg concentrations. Finally, we quantified arsenic, Hg, and selenium (Se) in blood of live-captured turkeys inhabiting a coal ash basin on the Savannah River Site. Compared with reference samples, we found that turkeys inhabiting the Savannah River Site contained elevated Hg levels in both muscle and liver tissues, and lower concentrations of chromium. Turkeys from the ash basin also had elevated levels of Se. We found a positive correlation between breast muscle and feather Hg concentrations (F 1,59  = 267.5, R 2  = 0.82, p < 0.001), suggesting that feathers can potentially be used as a nonlethal sampling technique. All elements analyzed were below reference limits set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for safe consumption. Thus, our data suggest that turkeys likely are not an important pathway of contaminant exposure on the Savannah River Site or other areas with similar contaminant distributions. The present study aims to analyze the temporal variations of PM 10 and to assess the health risk indexes caused by trace elements from particulate matter (PM 10 ) via inhalation, ingestion, and dermal absorption by adults and children in Copșa Mică (Romania) during 2009-2019. The results revealed a high multi-annual mean concentration of PM 10 and trace elements. The analyzed air pollutants showed a decreasing trend during the studied years, therefore 44.11%, 43.48%, 36.07%, 16.02%, and 15.80% lower values were observed for As, Cd, Ni, PM 10 , and Pb, respectively, due to environmental regulations. The daily exceedance percentage of Pb and Cd was very high, representing 21.74% and 11.26%, followed by PM 10 and As concentrations with 4.72% and 3.92%. The ratio between the trace element concentration measured in Copșa Mică and the country average was 2.46, 4.01, 2.44 and 10.52 times higher for As, Cd, Ni and Pb. The calculated Hazard Quotient values via inhalation were higher than the safe limit (1), which accounted 1.81, 3.89 and 4.52, for As, Cd and Ni, respectively, indicating that the trace elements might present a non-carcinogenic risk to both adults and children. Furthermore, the concentration of all studied trace elements in Copșa Mică showed cancer risk for adults via inhalation and dermal absorption as well.

Cobalt ions are the main wear particles associated with orthopaedic implants, causing adverse complications due to cytotoxicity and inflammatory mediators. Recent studies have shown that sub-toxic levels of cobalt ions regulate matrix synthesis and inflammation, but the influence of cobalt ions on mechanotransduction remains unclear. Previously, we reported that sub-toxic levels of cobalt ions modulated primary cilia, which are crucial for mechanotransduction. This study therefore aimed to investigate the effect of cobalt ions on chondrocyte mechanosensation in response to cyclic tensile strain and the association with primary cilia. Sub-toxic levels of cobalt ions impaired chondrocyte mechanosensation and affected the gene expression of aggrecan, collagen II and MMP-13. Moreover, cobalt ions induced HDAC6-dependent primary cilia disassembly, which was associated with either cytoplasmic or ciliary α-tubulin deacetylation. Pharmaceutical HDAC6 inhibition with tubacin restored primary cilia length and mechanotransduction, whereas chemical depletion of primary cilia by chloral hydrate prevented mechanosignalling. Thus, sub-toxic levels of cobalt ions impaired chondrocyte mechanotransduction via HDAC6 activation, which was associated with tubulin deacetylation and primary cilia shortening., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Inc. Background: The levels of a number of essential and toxic trace elements in organs and tissues are affected by the disruptions in body homeostasis caused by obesity. Some of these elements may also be influenced by the consumption of biologically active substances of polyphenolic origin, which possess potent abilities to complex with transition metal ions., Aims: The aim of this study was to determine the content of essential and toxic trace elements in Wistar outbred and hereditary obese Zucker Lepr fa (Z) rats consuming a standard balanced diet or hypercaloric diet with excess fat and fructose, supplemented with quercetin or not supplemented., Materials and Methods: Male Wistar and Z rats were fed a control AIN-93M-based semi-synthetic diet or a high-fat-high-carbohydrate diet (HFCD, with 30% fat by weight and 20% fructose provided in the drinking water). A portion of the animals in each line and diet group was administered quercetin at 50 mg/kg body weight. Essential trace elements were included in the diets as a high-purity salt mixture. After the termination of feeding on day 63, the livers, kidneys, and brains of the rats were excised and the content of 16 elements (Fe, Mg, Cu, Mn, Co, Se, Zn, Cr, Ni, Al, Cd, As, Pb, V, Cs, and Ag) was measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS)., Results: In the livers of the Z rats, the contents of Co, Zn, Mg, Fe, Se, and V were reduced and the content of Cr was increased compared to that of the Wistar rats. Supplementation with quercetin significantly decreased liver Fe, V, and Se content, which was more noticeable in the Wistar rats than in the Z rats. In kidneys of Z rats consuming control diet, the contents of Co, Cu, and Cs were decreased whereas those of Ni, Al, and Se were increased compared with the contents in the Wistar rats. The same trend was observed with HFCD feeding except for Cs content. Quercetin reduced kidney V content in both rat lines fed both diets, whereas it reduced Se and Cs only in the Z rats fed control diet. In the brains of the Z rats, a large increase was observed in some trace elements including Pb, Cd, Al, Cr, Ni, Fe, and V compared with the levels in the Wistar rat brains. Supplementation of the control diet with quercetin decreased Al and Ni in the brains of the Z rats., Conclusion: There were significant differences in the mineral content of organs between the Wistar and Z rats, with different propensities for obesity. Moreover some of these effects had no straightforward association with decreased feed consumption or hepatic fat accumulation. When introduced into the diets, quercetin affected the content of essential and toxic elements, but with ambiguous physiological significance. The impact of the trace elements on selected marine fishes/crustacean in Kuwait (Sheam, Lobster, Speatty, and Nagroor) were investigated (As, Cd, Ni, Pb, and V) using the element concentrations in marine water and sediments. The toxic elements concentrations were measured in water samples (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, V, and Zn) for estimation of toxic levels, heavy metal evaluation index (84-360), and the degree of contamination (77-353). Similarly, sediment samples were analyzed for As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, V and estimated for contamination factor, I geo index, and ecological risk factor with respect to each element analyzed in the sample. The modified degree of contamination (0.25-3.67), risk index (6.5-282.27), metal pollution index (5.95-18.21), and pollution load index (0.27-1.2) were calculated for the samples. This study demonstrated that the water was medium to high contaminated with Cd, Hg, Pb, and V. The sediment analyses showed that most of the metals were within the toxic limits except for Cd, Cu, and Pb in few samples. Most samples were in between the effect range low-effect range medium and threshold effect level-probable effect level range of most metals, except for Cr, Cu, and Ni. Average trace elements concentration in fishes varieties investigated in this study indicated high As in all varieties irrespective of the season and high Ni in all fish during summer. The bioaccumulation factor showed that the trace elements in sediments contributed more to the fish than water. Concentrations of trace elements were greater in fish sampled in winter than that sampled in summer due to variations in the planktonic population in the sea. The estimated daily intake and the chronic daily intake for the Kuwaiti male and female were calculated. The hazards studied revealed that the consumption of Lobster and Speatty may lead to cancer and non-cancer hazards, in both male and female, Speatty having higher probability. The major sources of toxic elements contamination of Kuwait Bay water and sediment appear to be oil-based contamination, urban sewage, brine from desalination, and the trace elements released due to the natural oxidation-reduction processes.

The present study was conducted at a University campus of Agra to determine concentrations of crustal and trace elements in submicron mode (PM 1 ) particles to reveal sources and detrimental effects of PM 1 -bound metals (Cr, Cd, Mn, Zn, As, Co, Pb, Cu and Ni) in samples collected in the foggy (1 December 2016-17 January 2017) and non-foggy periods (1 April 2016-30 June 2016). Samples were collected twice a week on preweighed quartz fibre filters (QM-A 47 mm) for 24 h using Envirotech APM 577 (flow rate 10 l min -1 ). Mass concentration of PM 1 was 135.0 ± 28.2 and 54.0 ± 18.5 µg/m 3 during foggy and non-foggy period, respectively; crustal and trace elements were 13 and 4% during foggy and 11 and 3% in the non-foggy period. Source identification by PCA (principal component analysis) suggested that biomass burning and coal combustion was the prominent sources in foggy period followed by resuspended soil dust, industrial and vehicular emission, whereas in non-foggy period resuspended soil dust was dominant followed by biomass burning and coal combustion, industrial and vehicular emissions. In both episodes, Mn has the highest Hq (hazard quotient) value and Cr has the highest IlcR (Incremental Lifetime Cancer Risk) value for both adults and children. In vitro cytotoxicity impact on macrophage (J774) cells was also tested using MTT assay which revealed decreasing cell viability with increasing particle mass.

Trace metal elements, such as zinc, iron, copper, and manganese, play catalytic or structural roles in many enzymes and numerous proteins, and accordingly, contribute to a variety of fundamental biological processes. During the past decade, the fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) has become an important model organism for elucidating metal homeostasis in metazoan. We have been using Drosophila as a model to study metal metabolism for many years and have optimized simple and robust assays for determining the metal content in Drosophila, such as inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), the activity assay of enzymes dependent on metals, and staining metal ions in tissues of Drosophila. In this chapter, we present the step-by-step detailed methods for detecting the metal content in Drosophila melanogaster during metal toxicity study.

Contamination by organic and inorganic compounds remains one of the most complex problems in both brackish and marine environments, causing potential implications for the reproductive success and survival of several broadcast spawners. Ficopomatus enigmaticus is a tubeworm polychaete that has previously been used as a model organism for ecotoxicological analysis, due to its sensitivity and ecological relevance. In the present study, the effects of five trace elements (zinc, copper, cadmium, arsenic and lead), one surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS) and one polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (benzo(a)pyrene, B(a)P) on the sperm quality of F. enigmaticus were investigated. Sperm suspensions were exposed in vitro to different concentrations of each selected contaminant under four salinity conditions (10, 20, 30, 35). Possible adverse effects on sperm function were assessed by measuring oxidative stress, membrane integrity, viability and DNA damage. Sperm quality impairments induced by organic contaminants were more evident than those induced by inorganic compounds. SDS exerted the largest effect on sperm. In addition, F. enigmaticus sperm showed high tolerance to salinity variation, supporting the wide use of this species as a promising model organism for ecotoxicological assays. Easy and rapid methods on polychaete spermatozoids were shown to be effective as integrated sperm quality parameters or as an alternative analysis for early assessment of marine and brackish water pollution., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Inc. It is well known and proven that heavy metal contamination of the soils can severely affect the health of the people living in the contaminated areas given the ease with which trace elements can enter the human body. In addition-to agricultural crop depreciation as well as soil erosion, soil pollution can negatively affect the natural function of ecosystems. While certain heavy metals in high doses can be harmful to the body, others such as cadmium, mercury, lead, chromium, silver and arsenic in minimal amounts have delusional effects on the body, causing acute and chronic intoxication. Our research is focused on the identification of heavy metals from the soil (O, Al, Ca, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Na, P, Pb, Si, Ti, Zn) in 3 areas in Transylvania where factories were in operation, using 4 methods: UV-VIS spectrometry, AAS, SEM-EDAX and X-ray diffractions. High levels of very toxic trace elements such as lead, aluminum, cadmium were found near the studied areas, especially using SEM-EDAX and AAS methods. Knowledge on the soil concentration of TEs, the time exposure and the side effects can lead us to predict the health status of the exposed population. In our study, by determinating the concentration of TEs we set out to formulate a prediction on the health status of the exposed population using literature data.
