Gastrointestinal bleeding due to hemobilia is a rare condition but can be very serious, even life-threatening. The main causes of biliary bleeding are invasive procedures in treatment, trauma, or malignant diseases. Chronic obstruction of the biliary tract can cause inflammation, erosion, and leakage of adjacent vascular structures and lead to pseudoaneurysm or hemorrhage, but this is very rare. In this article, we present a clinical case of upper gastrointestinal bleeding due to a pseudoaneurysm of the hepatic artery believed to have formed due to chronic cholangitis. An 81-year-old female patient with a medical history of chronic cholangitis was admitted to the hospital with recurrent inflammation accompanied by progressive upper gastrointestinal bleeding, potentially life-threatening. Ultrasound images and blood tests confirmed that the patient had anemia and cholangitis caused by stones. Gastrointestinal endoscopy showed bleeding suspected to be from the biliary tract. Hepatobiliary computed tomography confirmed that the common hepatic artery pseudoaneurysm located at the upper end of the common bile duct had active bleeding.

Abstract A theoretical perspective on grandiose narcissism suggests four forms of it (sanctity, admiration, heroism, rivalry) and states that these forms conduce to different ways of thinking and acting. Guided by this perspective, we examined in a multinational and multicultural study (61 countries; N = 15,039) how narcissism forms are linked to cognitions and behaviors prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic. As expected, differences in cognitions and behaviors across narcissism forms emerged. For example, higher narcissistic rivalry predicted lower likelihood of enactment of COVID-19 prevention behaviors, but higher narcissistic sanctity predicted higher likelihood of enactment of COVID-19 prevention behaviors. Further, whereas the heroism, admiration, and rivalry narcissism forms acted in a typically antisocial manner, with high narcissism predicting greater endorsement of unfounded health beliefs, the sanctity form acted in a prosocial manner, with higher narcissism being linked to lower endorsement of unfounded COVID-19 health beliefs. Thus, the findings (a) support the idea of four narcissism forms acting differently, and (b) show that these differences reflect a double-edged sword, sometimes linking to an anti-social orientation, and sometimes linking to a pro-social orientation.

Introduction: Patients experiencing an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) frequently do not receive bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). In this study we sought to determine the prevalence of OHCA patients in Vietnam who received bystander CPR and its effects on survival outcomes. Methods: We performed a multicenter, retrospective observational study of patients (≥18 years) presenting with OHCA at three major hospitals in an LMIC from February 2014–December 2018. We collected data on the hospital and patient characteristics, the cardiac arrest events, the emergency medical services (EMS) system, the therapy methods, and the outcomes and compared these data, before and after pairwise 1:1 propensity score matching, between patients who received bystander CPR and those who did not. Upon admission, we assessed factors associated with good neurological survival at hospital discharge in univariable and multivariable logistic models. Results: Of 521 patients, 388 (74.5%) were men, and the mean age was 56.7 years (SD 17.3). Although most cardiac arrests (68.7%, 358/521) occurred at home and 78.8% (410/520) were witnessed, a low proportion (22.1%, 115/521) of these patients received bystander CPR. Only half of the patients were brought by EMS (8.1%, 42/521) or private ambulance (42.8%, 223/521), 50.8% (133/262) of whom had resuscitation attempts. In chyluria, there exists the communication between lymphatic vessels and the urinary tract, but the specific mechanism of this communication remains undocumented. The objective of this study was to assess the morphology of the main lymphatic vessels including the uro-lymphatic fistula, the thoracic duct using Magnetic Resonance Lymphangiography (MRL) and Intranodal Lymphangiography (IL).Materials and Methods: A retrospective study spanning five years, from January 2020 to January 2024, included 43 patients diagnosed with chyluria through cystoscopy and quantitative urine testing for triglycerides. These patients underwent MRL and then IL for uro-lymphatic fistula embolization.Results: The study involved 43 patients with an average age of 66.1 ± 19.5 years, with a male-to-female ratio of 1:2. Uro-lymphatic fistula occurred predominantly in the left kidney (72.1%), followed by the right kidney (20.9%), and both sides (7%). MRL imaging showed the thoracic duct in 100% of cases but visualized only 84.5% of the uro-lymphatic fistulas. In contrast, IL imaging showed the thoracic duct in 51.5% of patients but visualized uro-lymphatic fistulas in 100% of cases. In the procedure of IL, the average visualization time of the thoracic duct was 45 minutes, with a range of 35 to 69 minutes.Conclusion: MRL and IL complement each other in diagnosing the main lymphatic vessels in chyluria patients. The observed circulatory stasis in the thoracic duct supports the hypothesis that it contributes to increased pressure in the thoracic duct and the formation uro-lymphatic fistula as collateral circulations.Keywords: chyluria, MR lymphangiography, intranodal lymphangiography, uro-lymphatic fistula

This study addresses the complexities of fostering innovative behavior in Vietnam’s IT firms, a critical aspect of maintaining competitive advantage in the rapidly evolving IT sector. Using an integrated Grey theory incorporating Delphi and Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) methods, we explore the interdependencies among critical factors driving innovation within organizational contexts. The research draws on a comprehensive literature review and insights from 16 Vietnamese experts, identifying 21 critical factors across five dimensions: leadership and vision, culture and environment, learning and development, management and support, and technological resources. Our findings emphasize the paramount importance of visionary leadership and a risk-taking culture in enhancing innovation capability, with technological infrastructure also playing a significant role. Consequently, we recommend that IT companies prioritize visionary leadership and cultivate a culture that embraces risk to bolster innovation ecosystems. Hence, this study contributes significantly to the theoretical discourse on innovation capabilities within IT environments and offers practical recommendations for organizations in emerging markets like Vietnam.

Abstract Gastric cancer’s (GC) bad prognosis is usually associated with metastatic spread. Invasive cancer stem cells (CSC) are considered to be the seed of GC metastasis and not all CSCs are able to initiate metastasis. Targeting these aggressive metastasis-initiating CSC (MIC) is thus vital. Leukaemia inhibitory factor (LIF) is hereby used to target Hippo pathway oncogenic members, found to be induced in GC and associated with CSC features. LIF-treated GC cell lines, patient-derived xenograft (PDX) cells and/or CSC tumourspheres underwent transcriptomics, laser microdissection-associated proteomics, 2D and 3D invasion assays and in vivo xenograft in mice blood circulation. LIFR expression was analysed on tissue microarrays from GC patients and in silico from public databases. LIF-treated cells, especially CSC, presented decreased epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) phenotype and invasion capacity in vitro, and lower metastasis initiation ability in vivo. These effects involved both the Hippo and Jak/Stat pathways. Finally, GC’s high LIFR expression was associated with better clinical outcomes in patients. LIF treatment could thus represent a targeted anti-CSC strategy to fight against metastatic GC, and LIFR detection in primary tumours could constitute a potential new prognosis marker in this disease.

Abstract Development of high yielding cowpea varieties coupled with good taste and rich in essential minerals can promote consumption and thus nutrition and profitability. The sweet taste of cowpea grain is determined by its sugar content, which comprises mainly sucrose and galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) including raffinose and stachyose. However, GOS are indigestible and their fermentation in the colon can produce excess intestinal gas, causing undesirable bloating and flatulence. In this study, we aimed to examine variation in grain sugar and mineral concentrations, then map quantitative trait loci (QTLs) and estimate genomic-prediction (GP) accuracies for possible application in breeding. Grain samples were collected from a multi-parent advanced generation intercross (MAGIC) population grown in California during 2016–2017. Grain sugars were assayed using high-performance liquid chromatography. Grain minerals were determined by inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectrometry and combustion. Considerable variation was observed for sucrose (0.6–6.9%) and stachyose (2.3–8.4%). Major QTLs for sucrose (QSuc.vu-1.1), stachyose (QSta.vu-7.1), copper (QCu.vu-1.1) and manganese (QMn.vu-5.1) were identified. Allelic effects of major sugar QTLs were validated using the MAGIC grain samples grown in West Africa in 2017. GP accuracies for minerals were moderate (0.4–0.58). These findings help guide future breeding efforts to develop mineral-rich cowpea varieties with desirable sugar content.

In patients with high-output leakage, the treatment can be complicated. This study aims to report on a recent innovation in lymphatic intervention for treating such patients.Materials and Methods: A retrospective review of 36 patients with chyle leak after neck surgery for thyroid cancer was conducted to assess the efficacy of percutaneous lymphatic embolization and thoracic duct (TD) disruption.Results: Antegrade catheterization of the thoracic duct was achieved in 31 of 36 patients (86.1%). Therefore, embolization of the thoracic duct and thoracic duct branches was performed in 26 and 5 patients, respectively. In 5 cases of unsuccessful antegrade catheterization into the thoracic duct, transcervical access embolization was performed in 2 patients, and TD disruption (TDD) was performed in 3 patients. The pooled overall technical success rate of lymphatic embolization was 33/36 patients (91.7%). One patient who underwent thoracic duct embolization (TDE) with technical success (1/33 patients) but clinical failure had additional treatment directly sclerosing the TD under computed tomography scan. Cervical fluid collection sclerotherapy was done in 7 patients as an additional treatment. Resolution of the chyle leak after procedures was observed in all patients (100%). The mean time to resolution was 3 days (1– 7 days). There was no complication intra and after procedures.Conclusion: TDE, selective TD branches embolization and TDD are safe and effective minimally invasive treatments for CL post-surgery for thyroid carcinoma. One of the primary objectives for future wireless communication networks is to facilitate the provision of ultra-reliable and low-latency communication services while simultaneously ensuring the capability for vast connection. In order to achieve this objective, we examine a hybrid multi-access scheme inside the finite blocklength (FBL) regime. This system combines the benefits of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and time-division multiple access (TDMA) schemes with the aim of fulfilling the objectives of future wireless communication networks. In addition, a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is utilized to facilitate the establishment of the downlink transmission between the base station and mobile devices in situations when impediments impede their direct communication linkages. This paper aims to minimize the worst-case decoding-error probability for all mobile users by jointly optimizing transmission power, transmitting beamforming, blocklength, RIS reflection, and user pairing. To deal with the coupled variables in the formulated mixed-integer non-convex optimization problem, we decompose it into three sub-problems, namely, 1) decoding order determination problem, 2) joint transmission power, receiving beamforming, RIS reflection, and blocklength optimization problem, and 3) optimal user pairing problem. Then, we provide the sequential convex approximation (SCA) and semidefinite relaxation (SDR)-based algorithms as potential solutions for iteratively addressing the deconstructed first two sub-problems at a fixed random user pairing. In addition, the Hungarian matching approach is employed to address the challenge of optimizing user pairing. In conclusion, we undertake a comprehensive simulation, which reveals the advantageous qualities of the proposed algorithm and its superior performance compared to existing benchmark methods.

This paper thoroughly reviews face detection techniques, primarily focusing on applying Eigenfaces, a powerful method rooted in Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The goal is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the advancements, challenges, and prospects associated with Eigenface-based face detection systems. The review commences with exploring the comprehensive facial recognition system framework using Eigenfaces and studying the intricacies of employing Eigenfaces as a foundational element for robust facial recognition. Then, we describe the taxonomies of various Eigenface-based face detection approaches to provide a systematic understanding of the diverse strategies utilized in Eigenface-based face detection systems. Besides, the paper explores benchmarking datasets tailored specifically for facial recognition. These datasets are critically analyzed, highlighting their relevance, limitations, and potential impact on developing and assessing Eigenface-based face detection algorithms. Furthermore, the review details the limitations and open issues inherent in Eigenface-based face detection systems. Addressing concerns such as sensitivity to lighting conditions, occlusions, and scalability, this section aims to guide future research directions by identifying gaps in the current understanding and proposing potential avenues for improvement.

Quantum computing offers transformative processing capabilities, particularly in data analysis. However, its adoption in developing countries like Vietnam faces significant barriers, such as financial constraints, infrastructural limitations, and skill shortages. This study aims to determine and analyze these barriers’ impact weights and evaluate and rank potential solutions for overcoming the most critical barriers. This study proposes a multi-faceted approach integrating Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) methods, including the Delphi Method (DELPHI), Decision Making Trial And Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL), Combined Compromise Solution (COCOSO), Technique for Order Performance by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS), and the Multiplicative form of Multi-objective Optimization based on Ratio Analysis method (MULTIMOORA), alongside the Quantum Spherical Fuzzy (QSF) set analysis. This combination, especially integrating QSF DELPHI and QSF COCOSO models, represents a significant methodological contribution. Results indicate that Vietnam’s primary barriers to quantum computing are limited infrastructure, high costs, and a lack of skilled workforce. Correspondingly, the most highly rated solution strategies are cost reduction initiatives, investment in infrastructure, and training and education programs, which should be prioritized and considered to remove potential barriers. These findings highlight the need to prioritize addressing issues in facilities, human resources, and financial resources. This research bridges theoretical insights with actionable recommendations, providing a comprehensive roadmap for mitigating barriers and promoting the integration of quantum computing into Vietnam’s data analysis landscape.

Invasive fungal diseases are increasing globally, causing a large burden of disease in vulnerable populations. At the same time, antifungal resistance is rapidly emerging. Affordable nationwide and regional surveillance of fungal pathogens is needed.We have adapted a citizen-science methodology developed by a United Kingdom research group to study six key fungi in Vietnam, where there is no existing formal surveillance. These pathogens were ranked as high or critical in the World Health Organization fungal priority pathogens list and recognized as major disease-causing agents in Vietnam. Secondary school students (n = 90) in Hanoi were our citizen scientists, collecting soil (n = 90) and air (n = 90) samples for fungal identification and characterisation of drug-susceptibility in the laboratory.Pilot studies confirmed the effectiveness of our revised isolation procedure, which used selective culture media to improve the isolation of target fungi. Through active school and student involvement, optimized protocols, and our cost-effective sampling, the study could be scaled across Vietnam.We demonstrate an approach to fungal surveillance which also enhances science education, and awareness of fungal diseases. It addresses critical healthcare and education challenges in Vietnam while combating the growing issues of invasive fungal diseases and antifungal resistance.

Tembusu virus (TMUV) is an important infectious disease, causing economic losses in duck production. Since the first report of TMUV infection in Vietnam in 2020, the disease has persisted and affected poultry production in the country. This study conducted epidemiological and genetic characterization of the viral strains circulating in north Vietnam based on 130 pooled tissue samples collected in six provinces/cities during 2021. The TMUV genome was examined using conventional PCR. The results indicated that 21 (16.15%) samples and 9 (23.68%) farms were positive for the viral genome. The positive rate was 59.26% for ducks at ages 2–4 weeks, which was significantly higher than for ducks at ages >4 weeks and

Objective Sleep quality is a crucial concern, particularly among youth. The integration of health coaching with question-answering (QA) systems presents the potential to foster behavioural changes and enhance health outcomes. This study proposes a novel human-AI sleep coaching model, combining health coaching by peers and a QA system, and assesses its feasibility and efficacy in improving university students’ sleep quality. Methods In a four-week unblinded pilot randomised controlled trial, 59 university students (mean age: 21.9; 64% males) were randomly assigned to the intervention (health coaching and QA system; n = 30) or the control conditions (QA system; n = 29). Outcomes included efficacy of the intervention on sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index; PSQI), objective and self-reported sleep measures (obtained from Fitbit and sleep diaries) and feasibility of the study procedures and the intervention. Results Analysis revealed no significant differences in sleep quality (PSQI) between intervention and control groups (adjusted mean difference = −0.51, 95% CI: [−1.55–0.77], p = 0.40). The intervention group demonstrated significant improvements in Fitbit measures of total sleep time (adjusted mean difference = 32.5, 95% CI: [5.9–59.1], p = 0.02) and time in bed (adjusted mean difference = 32.3, 95% CI: [2.7–61.9], p = 0.03) compared to the control group, although other sleep measures were insignificant. Adherence was high, with the majority of the intervention group attending all health coaching sessions. Most participants completed baseline and post-intervention self-report measures, all diary entries, and consistently wore Fitbits during sleep. Conclusions The proposed model showed improvements in specific sleep measures for university students and the feasibility of the study procedures and intervention. Future research may extend the intervention period to see substantive sleep quality improvements.

Due to the hydrologic non-stationarity and uncertainty related to the probability assignment of flood peaks under climate change, the use of flood statistics may no longer be applicable. Therefore, a sensitivity analysis (i.e., a scenario-neutral approach) is used to examine the impacts of climate change on flooding in the Ba River Basin. A Delphi method with a set of KAMET rules was used to obtain a representative and a threshold flood event. These inputs are used for hydraulic simulation using a MIKE FLOOD model package. Flood simulations were performed using parametrically varied rainfall and temperature conditions. In total, 22 conditions were explored and are in line with CMIP5 and CMIP6. The results obtained have several implications. Firstly, rainfall change is the primary factor affecting flood impact in the Ba River Basin. Secondly, the flood peak in the Ba River Basin is highly sensitive to an increase in rainfall by up to 10%. Thirdly, the flooded threshold is reached when rainfall increases beyond 20%. Fourthly, the flood extent and depth are expected to increase as rainfall increases. Further research could improve the study using satellite rainfall data, satellite digital elevation models, and stochastic weather generators. Abstract Osteoarthritis affects millions of people worldwide but current treatments using analgesics or anti-inflammatory drugs only alleviate symptoms of this disease. Here, we present an injectable, biodegradable piezoelectric hydrogel, made of short electrospun poly-L-lactic acid nanofibers embedded inside a collagen matrix, which can be injected into the joints and self-produce localized electrical cues under ultrasound activation to drive cartilage healing. In vitro, data shows that the piezoelectric hydrogel with ultrasound can enhance cell migration and induce stem cells to secrete TGF-β1, which promotes chondrogenesis. In vivo, the rabbits with osteochondral critical-size defects receiving the ultrasound-activated piezoelectric hydrogel show increased subchondral bone formation, improved hyaline-cartilage structure, and good mechanical properties, close to healthy native cartilage. This piezoelectric hydrogel is not only useful for cartilage healing but also potentially applicable to other tissue regeneration, offering a significant impact on the field of regenerative tissue engineering.

In this study, we investigated the possibility of a photocatalytic system that uses graphene-quantum-dot (GQD)-deposited graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) to treat tetracycline (TC) and other organic compounds generated from an in-situ-recirculatory-aquaculture-system (RAS)-like shrimp farming pond. GQDs were successfully deposited on the exfoliated g-C3N4 base through a hydrothermal treatment. The results showed that the incorporation of GQDs into the g-C3N4 enhanced its porosity without aggregating its mesoporous structure. The GQDs-deposited g-C3N4 photocatalysts revealed sheet-like structures with nanopores on their surface that facilitate photocatalysis. More than 90% of the TC was removed by the photocatalysts under UV-LED irradiation. Low loadings of GQDs over g-C3N4 resulted in a faster and more effective photocatalysis of TC, mainly driven by.O2- radicals. The photocatalysts were also applicable in the degradation of organic compounds with 27% of the total organic compounds (TOC) being removed from the wastewater of a RAS-like shrimp farming pond.

Abstract In the effort of isolating novel microbial species, the strain PL0132T was isolated from a fallen leaf under fresh water at a stream, which glided when grown on a tap water medium (without nutrients). The strain was determined to be Gram-negative, strictly aerobic, and rod-shaped, which grew optimally at 25 °C, pH 6–7, and the strain tolerates 1% (w/v) NaCl concentration. The complete genome of strain PL0132T comprises one contig with a sequencing depth of 76×, consisting of 8,853,064 base pairs and the genomic DNA G + C content was 46.7% (genome). 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strain PL0132T represents a member of the phylum Bacteroidetes and is affiliated with the genus Spirosoma. Based on genomic, phenotypic, and chemotaxonomic characteristics, the strain PL0132T represents a novel species of the genus Spirosoma, for which the name Spirosoma foliorum sp. nov. is proposed (= KCTC 72228 T = InaCC B1447T).

Chyle leak is a rare and serious condition caused by damaged lymphatic vessels. It can occur after retroperitoneal surgery involving extensive lymphadenectomy for kidney cancer. Besides lymphatic channel damage, the obstruction of the thoracic duct worsens the leakage. Managing patients with thoracic duct obstruction and postsurgical chyle leakage is challenging due to limited data on how to handle this condition. In this case report, a 28-year-old female patient underwent left nephrectomy for left kidney cancer. Three days after the surgery, milky fluid drained from the left renal fossa. Conservative treatment failed, and further examination through magnetic resonance lymphangiography revealed the absence of the thoracic duct and contrast extravasation at the left renal fossa. Lymphangiography confirmed distal thoracic duct obstruction. The patient's condition was successfully managed by using thoracic duct stenting.This report contributes to the understanding that thoracic duct obstruction can lead to lymphatic collateral circulation within the abdomen, thereby increasing the risk of postoperative chylous leak.

Background: Cardiorespiratory fitness positively correlates with longevity and immune health. Regular exercise may provide health benefits by reducing systemic inflammation. In chronic disease conditions, such as chronic heart failure and chronic fatigue syndrome, mechanistic links have been postulated between inflammation, muscle weakness, frailty, catabolic/anabolic imbalance, and aberrant chronic activation of immunity with monocyte upregulation. We hypothesize that (1) temporal changes in transcriptome profiles of peripheral blood mononuclear cells during strenuous acute bouts of exercise using cardiopulmonary exercise testing are present in adult subjects, (2) these temporal dynamic changes are different between healthy persons and heart failure patients and correlate with clinical exercise-parameters and (3) they portend prognostic information. Methods: In total, 16 Heart Failure (HF) patients and 4 healthy volunteers (HV) were included in our proof-of-concept study. All participants underwent upright bicycle cardiopulmonary exercise testing. Blood samples were collected at three time points (TP) (TP1: 30 min before, TP2: peak exercise, TP3: 1 h after peak exercise). We divided 20 participants into 3 clinically relevant groups of cardiorespiratory fitness, defined by peak VO2: HV (n = 4, VO2 ≥ 22 mL/kg/min), mild HF (HF1) (n = 7, 14 < VO2 < 22 mL/kg/min), and severe HF (HF2) (n = 9, VO2 ≤ 14 mL/kg/min). Results: Based on the statistical analysis with 20–100% restriction, FDR correction (p-value 0.05) and 2.0-fold change across the three time points (TP1, TP2, TP3) criteria, we obtained 11 differentially expressed genes (DEG). Out of these 11 genes, the median Gene Expression Profile value decreased from TP1 to TP2 in 10 genes. The only gene that did not follow this pattern was CCDC181. By performing 1-way ANOVA, we identified 8/11 genes in each of the two groups (HV versus HF) while 5 of the genes (TTC34, TMEM119, C19orf33, ID1, TKTL2) overlapped between the two groups. We found 265 genes which are differentially expressed between those who survived and those who died. Conclusions: From our proof-of-concept heart failure study, we conclude that gene expression correlates with VO2 peak in both healthy individuals and HF patients, potentially by regulating various physiological processes involved in oxygen uptake and utilization during exercise. Multi-omics profiling may help identify novel biomarkers for assessing exercise capacity and prognosis in HF patients, as well as potential targets for therapeutic intervention to improve VO2 peak and quality of life. We anticipate that our results will provide a novel metric for classifying immune health.

This study isolated and identified Bacillus amyloliquefaciens B1 from Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda by carrying out the 16S rRNA sequence analysis, reconstructing the phylogenetic tree based on the Environment for Tree Exploration (ETE3) v3.1.1 belonging to the GenomeNet. By an indirect competitive enzyme-labeled immunoassay, B1 could produce tetrodotoxin (TTX) in MRS was more highly than LB media. After purification, TTX producing ability in B1 could be detected in ELISA assay, high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The gel permeation chromatography and gas chromatography were applied to determine the molecular weight of EPS and the concentration of glucose in EPS. The results indicated the highest molecular weight of exopolysaccharides (EPS) estimated 1.33 × 106 Da consisted of glucose (150.09 µg/g). TTX yield was proportional to EPS production in the bacterium. The antimicrobial activities of EPS were determined by agar well diffusion method. Diameter of inhibition zone (mm) of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens EPS on the test microorganisms. The EPS could inhibit against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Vibrio parahaemolyticus ATCC 17802 and Micrococcus luteus ATCC 10240. In silico prediction, TTX might interact with Bacillus amyloliquefaciens via the extracellular domain of noncanonic ABC-type transporter from gram positive bacteria. TTX might also interact with peptidase S54, mistic, metal binding protein of Bacillus subtilis and tryptophan-rich sensory protein of Bacillus cereus. This study provides the understanding of TTX producing Bacillus amyloliquefaciens B1 isolated from Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda.

Abstract Bacteroidota is a group of marine polysaccharide degraders, which play a crucial role in the carbon cycle in the marine ecosystems. In this study, three novel gliding strains, designated as SS9-22T, W9P-11T, and SW1-E11T, isolated from algae and decaying wood were proposed to represent three novel species of the genus Fulvivirga. We identified a large number of genes encoding for carbohydrate-active enzymes, which potentially participate in polysaccharide degradation, based on whole genome sequencing. The 16S rRNA sequence similarities among them were 94.4–97.2%, and against existing species in the genus Fulvivirga 93.1–99.8%. The complete genomes of strains SS9-22T, W9P-11T, and SW1-E11T comprised one circular chromosome with size of 6.98, 6.52, and 6.39 Mb, respectively; the GC contents were 41.9%, 39.0%, and 38.1%, respectively. The average nucleotide identity and the digital DNA-DNA hybridization values with members in the genus Fulvivirga including the isolates were in a range of 68.9–85.4% and 17.1–29.7%, respectively, which are low for the proposal of novel species. Genomic mining in three genomes identified hundreds of carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes) covering up to 93 CAZyme families and 58–70 CAZyme gene clusters, exceeding the numbers of genes present in the other species of the genus Fulvivirga. Polysaccharides of alginate, chitin, laminarin, starch, and xylan were degraded in vitro, highlighting that the three strains are rich sources of CAZymes of polysaccharide degraders for biotechnological applications. The phenotypic, biochemical, chemotaxonomic, and genomic characteristics supported the proposal of three novel species in the genus Fulvivirga, for which the names Fulvivirga ulvae sp. nov. (SS9-22T = KCTC 82072T = GDMCC 1.2804T), Fulvivirga ligni sp. nov. (W9P-11T = KCTC 72992T = GDMCC 1.2803T), and Fulvivirga maritima sp. nov. (SW1-E11T = KCTC 72832T = GDMCC 1.2802T) are proposed.

Abstract The Hayabusa2 mission provided a unique data set of asteroid Ryugu that covers a wide range of spatial scale from the orbiter remote sensing instruments to the returned samples. The MASCOT lander that was delivered onto the surface of Ryugu aimed to provide context for these data sets by producing in situ data collected by a camera (MasCam), a radiometer (MARA), a magnetometer (MasMag) and a spectrometer (MicrOmega). In this work, we evaluate the success of MASCOT as an integrated lander to bridge the gap between orbiter and returned sample analysis. We find that MASCOT’s measurements and derivatives thereof, including the rock morphology, colour in the visible wavelengths, possible meteorite analogue, density, and porosity of the rock at the landing site are in good agreement with those of the orbiter and the returned samples. However, it also provides information on the spatial scale (sub-millimetres to centimetres) at which some physical properties such as the thermal inertia and reflectance undergo scale-dependent changes. Some of the in situ observations such as the presence of clast/inclusions in rocks and the absence of fine particles at the landing site was uniquely identified by MASCOT. Thus, we conclude that the delivery of an in situ instrument like MASCOT provides a valuable data set that complements and provides context for remote sensing and returned sample analyses. Study region: Ba River Basin, Viet Nam. Study focus: The impacts of deep uncertainties on the water resources system in the Ba River Basin are explored through the combined use of a climate stress-test and land use change. The performance of the water resources system is assessed using water supply reliability under various climate conditions and land use. A MIKE HYDRO Basin model is developed with 7 irrigation regions, 45 irrigation users, 8 regular users, 48 reservoirs, and 10 hydropower plants. 40 different combinations of climate conditions and land use change were simulated. New hydrological insights for the region: Climatic and land use change is expected to reduce water supply reliability in the river basin by between 2.1% and 5.2%. The most significant reliability decrease is in Nam Bac An Khe (−29.4%), while the most increase is in Upper Ayun (+10.9%). The spatial variation of climatic change impact is high and is reflected in the reliability range. The reliability range of Upper Ayun and Ayun Pa is narrow (1.2% in Upper Ayun and 0.7% in Ayun Pa). In contrast, the reliability range of Nam Bac An Khe, Krong Pa, Krong Hnang, and Upper Dong Cam is wide (14.3% in Nam Bac An Khe, 12.7% in Krong Pa, 12.4% in Krong Hnang, 11.7% in Upper Dong Cam, and 3.4% in Lower Dong Cam).

Sóng đại diện và tham số là hai phương pháp phổ biển tính chiều cao sóng biển. Phương pháp sóng đại diện có độ chính xác thấp khi tính chiều cao sóng ý nghĩa. Tuy nhiên, phương pháp tham số cho kết quả tốt khi tính chiều cao sóng căn quân phương. Do đó, nghiên cứu này sẽ kiểm tra tính khả thi của việc sử dụng phương pháp tham số để tính chiều cao sóng ý nghĩa. Số lượng lớn số liệu sóng và sáu công thức của phương pháp tham số được thu thập để kiểm tra khả năng tính chiều cao sóng ý nghĩa và hiệu chỉnh hệ số để nâng cao khả năng tính. Kết quả cho thấy, sai số tính chiều cao sóng từ 9,9% đến 19,6%. Tuy nhiên, sai số chỉ còn từ 6,4% đến 9,5% sau khi hiệu chỉnh hệ số và công thức DT23 cho sai số tốt nhất. Để kiểm tra lại khả năng tính toán, bộ số liệu kiểm tra được sử dụng và kết quả cho thấy sai số đã giảm đáng kể khi hiệu chỉnh hệ số. Do đó, DT23 được đề xuất để tính chiều cao sóng ý nghĩa.

ABSTRACT Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen that requires iron for growth and virulence, yet this nutrient is sequestered by the innate immune system during infection. When iron is limiting, P. aeruginosa expresses the PrrF1 and PrrF2 small RNAs (sRNAs), which post-transcriptionally repress expression of nonessential iron-containing proteins, thus sparing this nutrient for more critical processes. The genes for the PrrF1 and PrrF2 sRNAs are arranged in tandem on the chromosome, allowing for the transcription of a longer heme-responsive sRNA, termed PrrH. While the functions of PrrF1 and PrrF2 have been extensively studied, the role of PrrH in P. aeruginosa physiology and virulence is not well understood. In this study, we performed transcriptomic and proteomic studies to identify the PrrH regulon. In shaking cultures, the pyochelin synthesis proteins were increased in two distinct prrH mutants compared to the wild type, while the mRNAs for these proteins were not affected by the prrH mutation. We identified complementarity between the PrrH sRNA and the sequence upstream of the pchE mRNA, suggesting the potential for PrrH to directly regulate the expression of genes for pyochelin synthesis. We further showed that pchE mRNA levels were increased in the prrH mutants when grown in static but not shaking conditions. Moreover, we discovered that controlling for the presence of light was critical for examining the impact of PrrH on pchE expression. As such, our study reports on the first likely target of the PrrH sRNA and highlights key environmental variables that will allow for future characterization of PrrH function. IMPORTANCE In the human host, iron is predominantly in the form of heme, which Pseudomonas aeruginosa can acquire as an iron source during infection. We previously showed that the iron-responsive PrrF small RNAs (sRNAs) are critical for mediating iron homeostasis during P. aeruginosa infection; however, the function of the heme-responsive PrrH sRNA remains unclear. In this study, we identified genes for pyochelin siderophore biosynthesis, which mediates uptake of inorganic iron, as a novel target of PrrH regulation. This study therefore highlights a novel relationship between heme availability and siderophore biosynthesis in P. aeruginosa.

O câncer é um dos principais problema de saúde pública no mundo e está entre as quatro principais causas de morte antes dos 70 anos de idade. Pacientes com câncer enfrentam riscos de eventos tromboembólicos, complicações, progressão tumoral e morte. O sistema fibrinolítico desempenha um papel na fisiologia e patologia da fibrinólise e hemostasia, na degradação de matriz extracelular, migração celular, remodelação de tecidos, cicatrização de feridas, angiogênese e inflamação. Dessa maneira, o sistema fibrinolítico apresenta efeitos cooperativos que facilitam o crescimento de tumores e surgimento de metástases. As triagens para distúrbios fibrinolíticos são difíceis e os testes apresentam pouca padronização, atualmente na área da pesquisa, técnicas fluorimétrico de geração simultânea de trombina e plasmina vem sendo desenvolvidas, entretanto uma técnica “Padrão Ouro” ainda não foi alcançada. Dados prospectivos sobre o sistema fibrinolítico e sua relação com desfechos clínicos em pacientes com câncer são limitados. Este estudo prospectivo tem como objetivo avaliar o potencial fibrinolítico em pacientes com câncer e sua associação com mortalidade utilizando o método fluorimétrico de geração simultânea de trombina e plasmina (STP). O estudo incluiu 323 pacientes com progressão ou diagnóstico recente de câncer, acompanhados por 12 meses, e 148 indivíduos saudáveis. Durante o acompanhamento, 68 pacientes faleceram e 10 perderam seguimento. Em comparação com o grupo de controle, os pacientes com câncer apresentaram alterações nos parâmetros de geração de trombina consistentes com um perfil de hipercoagulabilidade, bem como um aumento nos parâmetros de produção de plasmina. Parâmetros relacionados à amplitude máxima (MA) da trombina (Wald 11,78, HR 1,02, p < 0,001), área sob a curva (AUC) da trombina (Wald 8,0, HR 1,02, p = 0,005) e tempo para velocidade máxima (tVmax) da plasmina (Wald 4,92, HR 1,0, p = 0,027) mostraram associação com risco de mortalidade na análise de cox univariada. Essa associação foi estatisticamente significativa para a amplitude máxima (HR 1.02, p,004) e a área sob a curva da trombina (HR 1.02, p.0,025) após o ajuste para dados demográficos e clínicos. No entanto, essa associação não foi mantida para a plasmina. Em conclusão, este foi o primeiro estudo capaz de demonstrar a avaliação simultânea da geração de trombina e plasmina em pacientes com câncer recém-diagnosticados e não tratados. Observamos um perfil de hipercoagulabilidade em pacientes com câncer associado a maior amplitude e velocidade de produção de plasmina. Além disso, identificamos dois parâmetros com uma associação potencial com o risco de mortalidade: MA (amplitude máxima) e AUC (área sob a curva) para a geração de trombina. No entanto, nenhuma associação entre parâmetros da plasmina e mortalidade foi encontrada.

Introdução: A Doença Hemolitica Perinatal (DHPN) é causada por aloanticorpos maternos dirigidos contra antígeno presente nas hemácias fetais e ausente nas hemácias da mãe. A incompatibilidade do antigo D, do Sistema Rh é a forma mais reconhecida de (DHPN). A Pesquisa de Anticorpos Irregulares (PAI) é um teste laboratorial que verifica a ocorrência de aloimunização eritrocitária através da identificação da presença de aloanticorpos. Na rotina Pré-Natal, o teste de PAI é solicitado somente para gestantes Rh D negativas. Objetivo: Demonstrar, através do caso descrito, a possibilidade de hemólise perinatal associada à presença de aloanticorpo materno, com especificidade anti-E e a relevância do teste de PAI em gestantes. Método: Relato de caso de uma Agência Transfusional de Hospital Privado no Interior de SP. Relato de caso: Dois Recém-Nascidos (RN) gemelares com Teste de Antiglobulina Direta (TAD) “Positivo”, nascidos às 33 semanas de gestação, após quadro materno de Hipertensão. Segunda gestação da Mãe, a sem antecedente de aborto. Solicitados testes imuno-hematológicos (metodologia gel) para complementação diagnóstica, com amostras de coleta periférica da mãe e dos recém-nascidos. Amostra materna: ARhD+, Fenotipagem: C- c+ E- e+ K-, PAI: Positiva e Painel de Identificação de Anticorpos Irregulares: aloanticorpo anti-E. Amostra do recém-nascido 1: ARhD+ Fenotipagem: C- c+ E+ e+ K- TAD: Positivo. Amostra do recém-nascido 2: ARhD+ Fenotipagem: C- c+ E+ e+ K- TAD: Positivo. Ambos os RNs necessitaram de transfusão de concentrado de hemácias (CH), um dia após o nascimento, permaneceram internados por 28 dias e receberam alta com boa evolução clínica. Discussão: A grande maioria das gestantes, só é submetida a investigação imuno-hematológica, que inclui o teste de PAI, quando a tipagem Rh D é negativa, isso devido maior preocupação com a aloimunização materna pelo antígeno D. Contudo, outros antígenos eritrocitários podem ter caráter de sensibilização da mãe com possíveis implicâncias clínicas importantes para o RN. No caso relatado, houve a identificação de aloanticorpo materno anti-E (Sistema Rh), potencialmente hemolítico. A hemólise provocada pelo aloanticorpo anti-E materno, corroborou na necessidade de transfusão de CH para correção de anemia. A identificação do anti-E, também foi relevante para a escolha dos CHs transfundidos em ambos os RNs. Conclusão: O presente relato de caso aponta a possibilidade de Anemia Hemolítica Perinatal associada a aloanticorpo anti-E materno, mãe com tipagem Rh D positiva. A Pesquisa de Anticorpos Irregulares em gestantes, independentemente da tipagem ABO/Rh D, pode antecipar o diagnóstico de incompatibilidade eritrocitária entre mãe e bebê e, assim, permitir melhor planejamento da assistência materno-infantil durante a gestação e no pós-parto.

Abstracts: Chylous ascites results from the leakage of lipid-rich lymphatic fluid into the peritoneal cavity. Most postsurgical chylous ascites occurs following abdominal aortic surgeries. However, rarely, it is a complication after laparoscopic donor nephrectomy. Postsurgical chylous ascites are often managed with conservative treatment or surgery, but lymphatic embolization may be required. Here, we presented a 45-year-old male patient who was referred for abdominal distension for 1 week after left donor nephrectomy. The drain fluid was milky and fluid analysis revealed high concentrations of triglycerides and chylomicron, confirming diagnosis of chylous ascites. The patient was treated with conservative therapy including a low-fat diet and fluid drainage but continued to have high draining output (up to 1500-2000 mL/24 h). He underwent magnetic resonance lymphangiography and intranodal lymphangiography, revealing extravasation of contrast into the abdomen and the left renal fossa. We embolized the interstitial lymphatic of the left retroperitoneal and lymphatic vessels leak. The patient was discharged from hospital at the fifth day after intervention. In this article, we demonstrate lymphatic lesions, the safety, and success of this technique.

Background: Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is more frequently reported in patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), which may be associated with the presence of solid cell nests (SCNs) and focal PTC-like nuclear alterations in the thyroid gland. The point of this consideration was to assess the morphological and immunohistochemical features of SCNs and follicular epithelial changes in Vietnamese patients with HT. Materials and Methods: Hematoxylin–eosin and immunohistochemistry were performed on 20 samples of HT patients who underwent thyroidectomy and were diagnosed with Hashimoto's thyroiditis at Military Medical Hospital 103 from 6/2018 to 6/2019. The expression of five markers (P63, Calcitonin, TTF1, CK19 and HBME-1) in SCNs and follicular epithelial changes were evaluated. Results: Ninety per cent of samples had SCNs with an average of 10 SCNs per section. Only type 1 and type 4 SCNs were presented (85% and 55%, respectively) and all SCNs were composed of main cells (p63-positive). Fifteen of the 18 cases having SCNs possessed nuclear features of PTC. C-cell hyperplasia was found in one case with 20 clusters. All SCNs showed strong staining with CK19 and weak staining with HBME-1. Follicular epithelial changes were Hürthle cell metaplasia, PTC-like nuclear alterations, atypical solid nodules, papillary and glomerular-like forms (40%, 100%, 25% and 50%, respectively). Follicular cells of glomerular-like forms (new alteration) especially were positive with CK19 (2+ ~ 3+), HBME-1 (1+) and TTF1, while the components in these follicles were negative with CK19, HBME-1 and TTF1. Among PTC-like nuclear alterations, all the atypical solid nodules related to HT showed markers related to PTC and without SCNs. Conclusions: Increasing the number of SCNs, as well as PTC-like nuclear alterations of main cells in SCNs and follicular epithelial changes were co-expressed CK19 and HBME-1. Therefore, the need for HT management should be considered.

Abstract Background MND-SMART is a platform, multi-arm, multi-stage, multi-centre, randomised controlled trial recruiting people with motor neuron disease. Initially, the treatments memantine and trazodone will each be compared against placebo, but other investigational treatments will be introduced into the trial later. The co-primary outcomes are the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Functional Rating Scale Revised (ALS-FRS-R) functional outcome, which is assessed longitudinally, and overall survival. Methods Initially in MND-SMART, participants are randomised 1:1:1 via a minimisation algorithm to receive placebo or one of the two investigational treatments with up to 531 to be randomised in total. The comparisons between each research arm and placebo will be conducted in four stages, with the opportunity to cease further randomisations to poorly performing research arms at the end of stages 1 or 2. The final ALS-FRS-R analysis will be at the end of stage 3 and final survival analysis at the end of stage 4. The estimands for the co-primary outcomes are described in detail. The primary analysis of ALS-FRS-R at the end of stages 1 to 3 will involve fitting a normal linear mixed model to the data to calculate a mean difference in rate of ALS-FRS-R change between each research treatment and placebo. The pairwise type 1 error rate will be controlled, because each treatment comparison will generate its own distinct and separate interpretation. This publication is based on a formal statistical analysis plan document that was finalised and signed on 18 May 2022. Discussion In developing the statistical analysis plan, we had to carefully consider several issues such as multiple testing, estimand specification, interim analyses, and statistical analysis of the repeated measurements of ALS-FRS-R. This analysis plan attempts to balance multiple factors, including minimisation of bias, maximising power and precision, and deriving clinically interpretable summaries of treatment effects. In order to reduce the costs of integration and verification processes and to optimize the assembly, integration and verification (AIV) flow in the prototype development of small- and medium-sized spacecrafts, an industrial six-axis robot was used as a universal mechanical ground support equipment instead of a tailored prototype specific ground support equipment (GSE). In particular, a robotic platform offers the possibility of embedding verification steps such as mass property determination into the integration process while offering a wider range of ergonomic adaption due to the enhanced number of degrees of freedom compared to a classical static Mechanical GSE (MGSE). This reduces development costs for projects and enhances the flexibility and ergonomics of primarily mechanical AIV operations. In this paper, the robotic MGSE system is described, the operational prospects for in-line verification are elaborated and an example is given showing the possibilities and challenges of its operational use as well as its in-line mass determination capabilities. For this purpose, a method has been developed that allows for the precise measurement of the spacecraft mass using the robot’s existing technology without the need for additional hardware. Subsequent work will extend this to determine the center of gravity and the moments of inertia of the payload on the robotic MGSE.

This study, for the first time, has investigated the relationships between alterations of mangiferin contents in mango leaves at different maturity stages and their antibacterial properties. Leaves were classified into six different maturity stages based on their color: (1) young dark reddish brown, (2) young yellow, (3) young light green, (4) mature green, (5) old dark green, and (6) old yellow leaves. Ethanol extracts were then examined against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, applying broth dilution and agar well diffusion methods. In addition, we also measured the mangiferin contents in leaves at different stages for the purpose of evaluating how the changes in this phytochemistry value affects their activities against bacteria. The results showed that extracts from leaves at young ages had better antibacterial properties than those from old leaves, as evidenced by the lower minimum inhibitory concentrations and larger inhibitory zones. In addition, we also found that the contents of mangiferin were significantly decreased followed the maturation process. These results suggest that mango leaves at young stages, especially dark reddish brown and young yellow leaves, are preferable for application in bacterial infections and other therapies related to mangiferin’s constituents.

The choice of precursor and simple synthesis techniques have decisive roles in the viable production and commercialization of carbon products. The intense demand for developing high-purity carbon nanomaterials through inexpensive techniques has promoted the usage of fossil derivatives as a feasible source of carbon. In this study, Vietnamese-coal-derived porous carbon (PC) was used to fabricate coal-derived porous carbon nanomaterials (CDPCs) using the modified Hummers method. The resulting porous carbon nanomaterials achieved a nanoscale structure with an average pore size ranging from 3 to 10 nm. The findings indicate that CDPC exhibits well-developed micropores and mesopores. The presence of macropores and mesopores not only facilitates the complete immersion of the material in the electrolyte but also effectively shortens the ion diffusion pathways. CDPC boasts a high carbon content, constituting 80.88% by weight. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) Nyquist plot of electrodes made from CDPC showed good conductivity value with low charge-transfer resistance. This electrode worked well and stably with capacitance retention of 74.7% after 1000 cycles. The CDPC specific capacitance reached 236 F/g under a current density of 0.1 A using the constant current discharge method and then decreased as the current density increased. Based on the results of the electrochemical properties of the materials, the energy storage capacity of the CDPC material was good and stable. This investigation presents an eco-friendly methodology for the judicious utilization of coal in energy storage applications, specifically as electrodes for supercapacitors and anodes for Li-ion batteries.

This study examines the fly ash from Soc Son municipal waste power plant (SMPP) and suggests ways to repurpose it to reduce its environmental impact. Fly ash from the Soc Son waste power plant has a gray color, spherical particles with a 5–103 μ m diameter, and a high carbon and heavy metal content. Bermorite crystals can absorb and release heavy metals, making monitoring secondary pollutants during incineration crucial. The EDX analysis of fly ash from the Soc Son waste power plant revealed that it was predominantly contaminated with metal elements, with the highest percentage of calcium. The EDX was able to detect heavy metals in incinerator fly ash. The concentration of Zn in the fly ash exceeded QCVN 07:2009/BTNMT standards, indicating the high amounts of some elements that may be hazardous to the environment and human health. Using the SEM/EDX and XRF, the fly ash from the Soc Son landfill power plant was analyzed and discovered that it exceeds permissible limits for dangerous heavy elements. The most common inorganic elements are Ca, followed by Zn, Pb, Cd, and Ag. Fly ash is classed as hazardous waste due to its high concentration of heavy metals, which results from the combustion of municipal solid waste that has not been separated. Vietnam fights municipal solid waste incinerator fly ash production. Some nations stabilize fly ash to remove harmful components and use it in buildings. Stabilized fly ash makes unfired construction bricks and cement manufacturing components and combining fly ash with inorganic trash protects the environment.

Assessing the quality of groundwater and upstream water in regions experiencing water scarcity during the dry season, such as the mountainous districts of Northern Vietnam, holds immense significance in the management, utilization, and preservation of natural water resources. In this study, we collected and analyzed 54 samples of groundwater and upstream streamwater within the Nam Mu river basin in Lai Chau province during the dry season. These samples underwent thorough analysis for physicochemical parameters, major ion concentrations, and trace elements. Some results revealed a close relationship between streamwater and groundwater, indicating a similar chemical composition. These waters could be classified based on geological formations, yielding two primary water types in the area. The first type, characterized by Ca ^2+ - Mg ^2+ - HCO _3 ^− is prevalent in Triassic terrigenous sediments. The second type is a mixed water type, ranging from Ca ^2+ - Mg ^2+ - Cl ^− to Ca ^2+ - Na ^+ - HCO _3 ^− , primarily distributed in Permian felsic volcanic formations. These distinct water types are primarily the result of interactions between water and rock, precipitation processes, and ion exchange phenomena. Geochemical simulation results demonstrated the supersaturation of aragonite, calcite, and dolomite minerals, leading to the precipitation of carbonate minerals. Concurrently, the simulation indicated a tendency to dissolve minerals such as fluorite, gypsum, halite, and sylvite. The assessment of water quality using the WQI indicates that, in accordance with QCVN 01-1:2018/BYT 2018 standards, the majority of groundwater and streamwater are suitable for domestic use. However, exceptions exist in certain sample locations where water quality exceeds permissible standards, primarily due to elevated levels of Fe, Mn, and NO _3 ^− concentration. Hence, it is important to implement water treatment processes for the water sourced from these specific locations before their utilization in daily activities to ensure the safety and well-being of the local population.

In the midst of Vietnam’s surge towards English bilingualism and traditional teacher-centric methodologies, the uncharted territory of on-action reflective teaching among English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers emerges as a potential avenue for enhancing pedagogical efficacy and holistic student development. This study delves into the qualitative examination of on-action reflective teaching among EFL teachers in Vietnam, a vital element of professional teaching that has not been adequately explored within the Vietnamese setting. The study is anchored on the model of reflective practice and the ecological systems theory, probing into the manner in which teachers involve themselves in on-action reflection and its subsequent impact on the caliber of teaching and learning. The data was gathered by means of semi-structured interviews with 15 teachers who teach English across various academic levels. The thematic analysis showed that the teachers participated in both individual and cooperative reflection. It was discovered that the ramifications of reflective teaching go beyond merely improving teaching efficacy to encouraging professional advancement, cultivating a culture of constant enhancement, and bolstering ethical teaching practices. The study emphasizes the importance of incorporating reflective practices into teacher professional development, nurturing a reflective atmosphere within schools, and establishing supportive policy structures. While the research provides valuable perspectives on reflective teaching in Vietnam, it also highlights areas requiring further exploration, such as extending the research to rural scenarios and utilizing diverse data gathering techniques.

The resection margin status is a significant surgical prognostic factor for the long-term outcomes of patients undergoing pancreaticoduodenectomy (Whipple procedure). As a result, surgeons frequently rely on intraoperative consults (IOCs) involving frozen sections to evaluate margin clearance during these resections. Nevertheless, the impact of this practice on final margin status and long-term outcomes remains a topic of debate. This study aimed to assess the impact of IOCs on the clearance rate of resection margins following Whipple procedure and distal pancreatectomy. A retrospective database review of all patients who underwent Whipple procedure or distal pancreatectomy at our institution between 2018 and 2020 was performed to evaluate the utility of IOCs by gastrointestinal surgeons and its correlation with final postoperative surgical margin status. A significant variation in the frequency of IOC requests for margins among surgeons was noted. However, the use of frozen section analysis for intraoperative margin assessment was not significantly associated with the clearance rate of final post-operative margins. More frequent use of IOC did not result in higher final margin clearance rate, an important prognostic factor following Whipple procedure.

Camellia sinensis var. madoensis is described and illustrated as a new variety of Camellia sinensis (section Thea, Theaceae) from Xuan Loc Commune, Song Cau District, Phu Yen Province. The new variety is easily distinguishable from C. sinensis var. sinensis by style free ½ to the base. The ITS sequence of this variety is also different from that of Camellia sinensis and its other varieties, while the matK gene sequences are nearly identical among Camellia taxa.

Propagation of tau fibrils correlate closely with neurodegeneration and memory deficits seen during the progression of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Although it is not well-established what drives or attenuates tau spreading, new studies on human brain using positron emission tomography (PET) have shed light on how tau phosphorylation, genetic factors, and the initial epicenter of tau accumulation influence tau accumulation and propagation throughout the brain. Here, we review the latest PET studies performed across the entire AD continuum looking at the impact of amyloid load on tau pathology. We also explore the effects of structural, functional, and proximity connectivity on tau spreading in a stereotypical manner in the brain of AD patients. Since tau propagation can be quite heterogenous between individuals, we then consider how the speed and pattern of propagation are influenced by the starting localization of tau accumulation in connected brain regions. We provide an overview of some genetic variants that were shown to accelerate or slow down tau spreading. Finally, we discuss how phosphorylation of certain tau epitopes affect the spreading of tau fibrils. Since tau pathology is an early event in AD pathogenesis and is one of the best predictors of neurodegeneration and memory impairments, understanding the process by which tau spread from one brain region to another could pave the way to novel therapeutic avenues that are efficient during the early stages of the disease, before neurodegeneration induces permanent brain damage and severe memory loss.

Estimating the basic reproduction number (R0) of an infectious disease is a crucial step to describe the contagiousness and provides suggestions for interventions. To lift the effectiveness of preventive measures for the COVID-19 pandemic, we need to minimize the newly infected cases by reaching adequate herd immunity. This study thus aimed to compare the R0 through four waves of COVID-19 outbreaks in Vietnam and to calculate the minimal vaccination coverage in different populations. The data on the number of daily confirmed COVID-19 patients were collected from 21 January 2020 to 16 November 2021 from the daily reports through the four waves of the pandemic in Vietnam. The R0 values were estimated by exponential growth and the maximum likelihood methods to range from 1.04 to 3.31 from the first to the third wave. The fourth wave was the most severe, especially in the southern provinces, and the highest R0 was in Ho Chi Minh City. The herd immunity would range from 43.50% to 95.76% by various R0 values from different populations. Overall, the presence of new viral mutants increased the infectiousness and the vaccination coverage was higher to establish the required herd immunity in a high-density population. The results provide the basis for policy recommendations and resource allocation for vaccine management and distribution at a time when the COVID-19 pandemic is not yet over.

This study scrutinizes the viewpoints of Vietnamese students studying English as a Foreign Language (EFL) regarding determinants impacting their autonomy in English language acquisition. Data was amassed from 117 Vietnamese EFL learners attending a university in Vietnam by using a survey-based methodology. The survey instrument, comprising Likert-type items, was predicated on well-established conceptual frameworks derived from antecedent studies. The study unveiled multiple key influences on learner autonomy, incorporating voluntariness, learner choice, adaptability in study alternatives, peer collaboration, and beliefs about the educator’s role, motivation, capabilities, and independence. These determinants underscore the significance of learners’ active participation, personal agency, social interactions, nurturing learning ecosystems, intrinsic motivation, efficacious learning strategies, and learner empowerment in cultivating learner autonomy. The implications gleaned from these results emphasize the necessity for pedagogical stratagems that encourage voluntariness, learner choice, peer collaboration, teacher backing, motivation, skill enhancement, and learner agency within English language educational environments. These pedagogical stratagems would better equip learners for the autonomous journey of English language acquisition, thereby enhancing the overall efficiency of English language education in the Vietnamese context.

Introduction Smoking behavior can change with time and lead to different health outcomes. This study explored the trajectory of smoking and its relationship with cancer incidence and mortality among Korean male adults. Methods We used 2002–2018 data from the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS). Smoking status was repeatedly measured in four waves of general health examinations provided by the NHIS between 2002 and 2009. Cancer incidence and mortality were tracked from 2010 to 2018. Trajectory analysis was used to identify the patterns of smoking. The hazard ratio was calculated using Cox proportional regression models. Results For the 2448548 men (≥20 years), 137788 cases of cancers and 41146 cancer deaths were found. We identified six trajectory groups: never smokers, former smokers, new current smokers, decreasing light smokers, steady moderate smokers, and steady heavy smokers. All smoking groups had an increased risk of cancer. The steady heavy smokers showed higher cancer incidence and mortality rate than the steady non-smokers (hazard ratio, HR=1.53; 95% CI: 1.49–1.58 and HR=2.64; 95% CI: 2.50–2.79, respectively). The cancer-specific analysis showed that the larynx and lung cancer incidence and mortality rate of the smoking group were higher than in never smokers. Conclusions Smoking, even at low doses, increases the risk of most cancers in men. Quitting or reducing smoking, especially at a young age, can lower cancer incidence and mortality. This study may provide more objective results on the relationship between smoking and cancer, because smoking behavior was examined at multiple time points.

The role of non-neuronal cells has been relatively overlooked in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) neuropathogenesis compared to neuronal cells since the first characterization of the disease. Genome wide-association studies (GWAS) performed in the last few decades have greatly contributed to highlighting the critical impact of non-neuronal cells in AD by uncovering major genetic risk factors that are found largely in these cell types. The recent development of single cell or single nucleus technologies has revolutionized the way we interrogate the transcriptomic and epigenetic profiles of neurons, microglia, astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, pericytes, and endothelial cells simultaneously in the same sample and in an individual manner. Here, we review the latest advances in single-cell/nucleus RNA sequencing and Assay for Transposase-Accessible Chromatin (ATAC) sequencing to more accurately understand the function of non-neuronal cells in AD. We conclude by giving an overview of what still needs to be achieved to better appreciate the interconnected roles of each cell type in the context of AD.

In the recent era of information explosion, exploring event from social networks has recently been a crucial task for many applications. To derive valuable comprehensive and thorough insights on social events, visual analytics (VA) system have been broadly used as a promising solution. However, due to the enormous social data volume with highly diversity and complexity, the number of event exploration tasks which can be enabled in a conventional real-time visual analytics systems has been limited. In this article, we introduce SocioPedia+, a real-time visual analytics system for social event exploration in time and space domains. By introducing the dimension of social knowledge graph analysis into the system multivariate analysis, the process of event explorations in SocioPedia+ can be significantly enhanced and thus enabling system capability on performing full required tasks of visual analytics and social event explorations. Furthermore, SocioPedia+ has been optimized for visualizing event analysis on different levels from macroscopic (events level) to microscopic (knowledge level). The system is then implemented and investigated with a detailed case study for evaluating its usefulness and visualization effectiveness for the application of event explorations.

Physics teachers’ definitions of equity inform how they identify inequity and take action to transform it. In this paper, we adapted Gutiérrez’s equity framework from mathematics education research to physics education research. The framework defines equity in terms of four dimensions: access, achievement, identity, and power. We used this equity framework to characterize the equity conceptions shared by 23 teachers who participated in an equity-focused professional development. We found that the access and achievement dimensions of equity are popular with teachers compared to the identity and power dimensions, and that teachers share a common understanding of conceptions of access and achievement in ways that is consistent with educational literature and discourses.

BackgroundSARS-CoV-2 Delta variant caused a large number of COVID-19 cases in many countries, including Vietnam. Understanding mortality risk factors is crucial for the clinical management of severe COVID-19.MethodsWe conducted a retrospective study at an intensive care center in Ho Chi Minh City that urgently built by Bach Mai Hospital during the COVID-19 outbreak in Vietnam, when the Delta variant predominated. Participants were laboratory-confirmed patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection, admitted in August 2021. Data on patients' demographic and clinical characteristics, radiographic and laboratory findings, treatment, and clinical time course were compared between survivors and non-survivors. Risk factors to mortality were assessed using logistic regression.ResultsAmong 504 eligible COVID-19 patients, case fatality was 52.2%. Unvaccinated patients accounted for 61.2% of non-survivors and 43.6% of survivors (p < 0.001). The time from onset to hospital admission was 8 days in non-survivors and 7 days in survivors (p = 0.004). Among non-survivors, 90.2% developed acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Oxygen therapy was administered for all patients, but antiviral agent was given to 51.7% of non-survivors. 54.2% of non-survivors tested positive for the bacterial infection using blood culture. The risk factors for mortality were diabetes mellitus, respiration rate, oxygen saturation, vaccination status, time from onset to admission, and older age.ConclusionsCritical patients with COVID-19 owing to the Delta variant in Vietnam had delayed hospital admission, leading to ARDS and death. Early availability of vaccines and preventing bacterial infections are crucial for reducing mortality of COVID-19, especially in low- and middle-income countries.

Abdominal effusion due to hepatic lymphorrhea post-hepatectomy is an extremely rare and complex complication in clinical practice. No standard treatment method has been established for this condition to date. We report a case of complicated intra-abdominal lymphatic leakage in a patient following hepatectomy to treat hepatocellular carcinoma. The patient underwent percutaneous embolization of the hilar hepatic lymphatic system, combined with intensive medical treatment. Percutaneous embolization represents a safe and effective method that should be considered as a first-line treatment for this complication.

Abstract The present paper examines longitudinally how subjective perceptions about COVID-19, one’s community, and the government predict adherence to public health measures to reduce the spread of the virus. Using an international survey (N = 3040), we test how infection risk perception, trust in the governmental response and communications about COVID-19, conspiracy beliefs, social norms on distancing, tightness of culture, and community punishment predict various containment-related attitudes and behavior. Autoregressive analyses indicate that, at the personal level, personal hygiene behavior was predicted by personal infection risk perception. At social level, social distancing behaviors such as abstaining from face-to-face contact were predicted by perceived social norms. Support for behavioral mandates was predicted by confidence in the government and cultural tightness, whereas support for anti-lockdown protests was predicted by (lower) perceived clarity of communication about the virus. Results are discussed in light of policy implications and creating effective interventions.
