Abstract

We discuss some results of a morphological study of edge-on galaxies, based on optical and especially near-infrared surface photometry. We find that the vertical surface brightness distributions of galaxies are fitted very well by exponential profiles, much better than by isothermal distributions. We find that in general the vertical scale height increases when going outward. This increase is strong for early-type spiral galaxies and very small for late types. We argue that it can be due to the presence of thick discs with scale lengths larger than the galaxy's main disc. Finally we discuss the colour-magnitude relation in I-K for spiral galaxies. We find that it is a tight relation, for which the scatter is similar to the observational uncertainties, with a steeper slope than for elliptical galaxies.

Abstract

We present the latest measurements of the Hubble parameter and of the parameter $\Xi_0$ describing modified gravitational wave propagation, obtained from the third gravitational wave transient catalog, GWTC-3, using the correlation with galaxy catalogs and information from the source-frame mass distribution of binary black holes. The latter leads to the tightest bound on $\Xi_0$ so far, i.e. $\Xi_0 = 1.2^{+0.7}_{-0.7}$ with a flat prior on $\Xi_0$, and $\Xi_0 = 1.0^{+0.4}_{-0.8}$ with a prior uniform in $\log\Xi_0$ (Max posterior and $68\%$ HDI). The measurement of $H_0$ is dominated by the single bright siren GW170817, resulting in $H_0=67^{+9}_{-6} \, \rm km \, s^{-1} \, Mpc$ when combined with the galaxy catalog., Comment: Contribution to the Gravitation session of the 56th Rencontres de Moriond 2022

Abstract

We apply a statistical method for constraining the Hubble parameter and modified Gravitational Wave (GW) propagation by correlating “dark sirens” (i.e. compact binary coalescences without an electromagnetic counterpart) with galaxy catalogs to the GWTC-2 catalogue and the GLADE galaxy catalogue. We propose various methodological improvements to the state of the art and discuss several sources of systematic uncertainty. We give an updated bound on H0 and the first bounds on the modified GW propagation parameter Ξ0 from dark sirens alone.

Abstract

In the Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model or MSSM, the lighter Higgs boson has a rather large mass, $M_h\approx 125$ GeV. Together with the non-observation of superpartners at the LHC, this suggests that the SUSY-breaking scale is rather high, $M_S > 1$ TeV. This implies a dramatic simplification of the MSSM Higgs sector that is summarised here., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures. Abstract

Recently, important updates were made for the hadronic contribution to the theoretical prediction of g-2. The isospin-breaking-corrections, needed in the comparison of the two pion spectral functions from tau decays and e+e- annihilations, were improved using new experimental and theoretical input. The recently published BABAR data were included in the global average of e+e- spectral functions. These data, as well as the ones from tau decays, were combined using newly developed software, featuring improved data interpolation and averaging, more accurate error propagation and systematic validation. The discrepancy between the e+e- and the tau-based result is reduced from previously 2.4 to 1.5 sigma. The full Standard Model prediction of g-2, obtained using e+e- data, differs from the experimental value by 3.2 standard deviations., Two figures removed

Abstract

Modified gravitational wave propagation is a smoking gun of modifications of gravity at cosmological scales, and can be the most promising observable for testing such theories. The observation of gravitational waves (GW) in recent years has allowed us to start probing this effect, and here we briefly review two promising ways of testing it. We will show that, already with the current network of detectors, it is possible to reach an interesting accuracy in the estimation of the $\Xi_0$ parameter (that characterizes modified gravitational wave propagation, with $\Xi_{0, {\rm GR}} = 1$) and with next generation facilities, such as the Einstein Telescope, we can get a sub-percent measurement., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, contribution to the 2022 Gravitation session of the 56th Rencontres de Moriond
