We aim to gain new insights into the controversial dynamical status of MACS J0329-0211 (MACS0329), a massive cluster at z=0.4503, with a new analysis using a large sample of member galaxies as kinematic tracers. Our analysis is based on extensive spectroscopic data for more than 1700 galaxies obtained with the VIMOS and MUSE spectrographs at the Very Large Telescope (VLT), in combination with B and Rc Suprime-Cam photometry from the Subaru archive. According to our member selection procedure, we define a sample of 430 MACS0329 galaxies within 6 Mpc, corresponding to about 3 times the virial radius. We estimate the global velocity dispersion, sigmaV=841 km/s, and present the velocity dispersion profile. We estimate a mass M200=9.2E14 in units of solar masses, using 227 galaxies within R200=1.71 Mpc, for which sigmaV200=1018 km/s. The spatial distribution of the red galaxies traces a SE-NW elongated structure, without signs of a velocity gradient. This structure likely originates from the main phase of cluster assembly. The distribution of the blue galaxies is less concentrated, more rounded and shows signs of substructure, all characteristics indicating a recent infall of groups from the field. We detect two loose clumps of blue galaxies in the south and southwest at a distance about R200 from the cluster center. The strong spatial segregation among galaxy populations is not accompanied by kinematical difference. Thanks to our extensive catalog of spectroscopic redshift, we are able to study galaxy systems that are intervening along the line of sight. We can identify two foreground galaxy systems (GrG1 at z=0.31 and GrG2 at z=0.38) and one background system (GrG3 at z=0.47). We present a detailed analysis of the thermal X-ray emission from the intracluster medium (ICM) in the cool-core galaxy cluster Abell 2667 ($z=0.23$). Our goal is to detect low-temperature ($<2$ keV) X-ray emitting gas, potentially associated to a cooling flow that connects the hot ICM reservoir to the cold gas phase responsible for star formation and supermassive black hole feeding. We use new deep XMM-Newton EPIC and RGS data, combined with archival Chandra data, to perform a spectral analysis for the core region. We find 1$\sigma$ upper limits to the cooling gas fraction of $\sim$40 $\rm M_{\odot}yr^{-1}$ and $\sim$50-60 $\rm M_{\odot}yr^{-1}$ in the temperature ranges 0.5-1 keV and 1-2 keV, respectively. The lack of OVII, FeXXI-FeXXII, and FeXVII emission lines in the RGS spectra suggest that the fraction of gas cooling below 1 keV is limited to a few tens of $\rm M_{\odot}yr^{-1}$ at most. However, we detect several lines (e.g. SiXIV, MgXII, FeXXIII/FeXXIV, NeX, OVIII$\alpha$) that allow us to estimate a 1$\sigma$ upper limit for turbulent broadening of $\sim$320 km $\rm s^{-1}$, higher that other cool-core clusters such as Abell 1835, implying mechanisms that boost turbulence in Abell 2667's atmosphere. Imaging analysis of Chandra data suggests the presence of a cold front, possibly lined to sloshing or ICM cavities. However, current data do not clearly identify the physical mechanism driving turbulence. These finding indicate that Abell 2667 is similar to other low-redshift cool-core clusters, though the large upper limit on turbulence hints at significant ICM heating, which may suppress cooling for extended periods and contribute to future condensation events.

We present deep ($\sim$ 20 hr), high-angular resolution Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the $\rm CO ~ (4-3)$ and $\rm [CI] ~ (1-0)$ transitions, along with the rest-frame 630 $\mu$m dust continuum, in BX610 --a massive, main-sequence galaxy at the peak epoch of cosmic star formation $(z = 2.21)$. Combined with deep Very Large Telescope (VLT) SINFONI observations of the H$\alpha$ line, we characterize the molecular gas and star formation activity on kiloparsec scales. Our analysis reveals that the excitation of the molecular gas, as traced by the $L'_{\rm CO ~ (4-3)} / L'_{\rm [CI] ~ (1-0)}$ line luminosity ratio, decreases with increasing galactocentric radius. While the line luminosity ratios in the outskirts are similar to those typically found in main-sequence galaxies at $z \sim 1$, the ratios in the central regions of BX610 are comparable to those observed in local starbursts. There is also a giant extra-nuclear star-forming clump in the southwest of BX610 that exhibits high star formation activity, molecular gas abundance, and molecular gas excitation. Furthermore, the central region of BX610 is rich in molecular gas $(M_{\rm mol} / M_{\rm \star} \approx 1)$; however, at the current level of star formation activity, such molecular gas is expected to be depleted in $\sim$ 450 Myr. This, along with recent evidence for rapid inflow toward the center, suggests that BX610 may be experiencing an evolutionary phase often referred to as wet compaction, which is expected to lead to central gas depletion and subsequent inside-out quenching of star formation activity., Comment: Submitted to Astronomy & Astrophysics. 09 pages, 05 figures

Exploring SMBH population in protoclusters offers valuable insights into how environment affects SMBH growth. However, research on AGN within these areas is still limited by the small number of protoclusters known at high redshift and by the availability of associated deep X-ray observations. To understand how different environments affect AGN triggering and growth at high redshift, we investigated the X-ray AGN population in the field of the MUSE Quasar Nebula 01 (MQN01) protocluster at z ~3.25. This field is known for hosting the largest Lya nebula in the Borisova+16 sample, and one of the largest overdensities of UV-continuum selected and sub-mm galaxies found so far at this redshift. We conducted a ultra deep Chandra X-ray survey (634 ks) observation of the MQN01 field and produced a comparative analyses of the properties of the X-ray AGNs detected in MQN01 against those observed in other selected protoclusters, such as Spiderweb and SSA22. By combining the X-ray, deep MUSE and ALMA data of the same field, we identified six X-ray AGNs within a volume of 16 cMpc^2 and \pm 1000 km/s, corresponding to an X-ray AGN overdensity of ~1000. This overdensity increases at the bright end, exceeding what was observed in the Spiderweb and SSA22 within similar volumes. The AGN fraction measured in MQN01 is significantly higher (f_AGN > 20%) than in the field and increases with stellar masses, reaching a value of 100% for log(M*/Msun) > 10.5. Lastly, we observe that the average specific accretion rate (\lambda_sBHAR) for SMBH populations in MQN01 is higher than in the field and other protoclusters, generally increasing as one moves toward the center of the overdensity. Galaxy clusters, being the largest gravitationally bound structures in the Universe, are a powerful tool to study mass assembly at different epochs. At z$>$2 they give an unique opportunity to put solid constraints not only on dark matter halo growth, but also on the mechanisms of galaxy quenching and morphological transformation when the Universe was younger than 3.3 Gyr. However, the currently available sample of confirmed $z>2$ clusters remains very limited. We present the spectroscopic confirmation of the galaxy cluster CARLA J0950+2743 at $z=2.363\pm0.005$ and a new serendipitously discovered cluster, CARLA-Ser J0950+2743 at $z=2.243\pm0.008$ in the same region. We confirm eight star-forming galaxies in the first cluster, and five in the second by detecting [OII], [OIII] and $H\alpha$ emission lines. The analysis of a serendipitous X-ray observation of this field from Chandra reveals a counterpart with a total luminosity of $L_{0.5-5 keV} = 2.9\pm0.6\times10^{45}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Given the limited depth of the X-ray observations, we cannot distinguish the 1-D profile of the source from a PSF model, however, our statistical analysis of the 2-D profile favors an extended component that could be associated to a thermal contribution from the intra-cluster medium (ICM). If the extended X-ray emission is due to the hot ICM, the total dark matter mass for the two clusters would be $M_{200}=3.30 ^{+0.23}_{-0.26 (\mathrm{stat})}$ $^{+1.28}_{-0.96 (\mathrm{sys})} \times10^{14} M_{\odot}$. This makes our two clusters interesting targets for studies of the structure growth in the cosmological context. The energy released by AGN has the potential to heat or remove the gas of the ISM, thus likely impacting the cold molecular gas reservoir of host galaxies at first, with star formation following on longer timescales. Previous works on high-z galaxies have yielded conflicting results, possibly due to selection biases and other systematics. To provide a reliable benchmark for galaxy evolution models at cosmic noon (z=1-3), two surveys were conceived: SUPER and KASHz, both targeting unbiased X-ray-selected AGN at z>1 that span a wide bolometric luminosity range. In this paper, we assess the effects of AGN feedback on the molecular gas content of host galaxies in a statistically robust, uniformly selected, coherently analyzed sample of AGN at z=1-2.6, drawn from the KASHz and SUPER surveys. By using ALMA data in combination with dedicated SED modeling, we retrieve CO and FIR luminosity as well as $M_*$ of SUPER and KASHz AGN. We selected non-active galaxies from PHIBBS, ASPECS and multiple ALMA/NOEMA surveys of sub-mm galaxies. By matching the samples in z, $M_*$ and $L_{FIR}$, we compared the properties of AGN and non-active galaxies within a Bayesian framework. We find that AGN hosts at given $L_{FIR}$ are on average CO depleted compared to non-active galaxies, confirming what was previously found in the SUPER survey. Moreover, the molecular gas fraction distributions of AGN and non-active galaxies are statistically different, with that of of AGN being skewed to lower values. Our results indicate that AGN can indeed reduce the total cold molecular gas reservoir of their host galaxies. The first generation of ELT instruments includes an optical-infrared high-resolution spectrograph, indicated as ELT-HIRES and recently christened ANDES (ArmazoNes high Dispersion Echelle Spectrograph). ANDES consists of three fibre-fed spectrographs ([U]BV, RIZ, YJH) providing a spectral resolution of $\sim$100,000 with a minimum simultaneous wavelength coverage of 0.4-1.8 $\mu$m with the goal of extending it to 0.35-2.4 $\mu$m with the addition of a U arm to the BV spectrograph and a separate K band spectrograph. It operates both in seeing- and diffraction-limited conditions and the fibre feeding allows several, interchangeable observing modes including a single conjugated adaptive optics module and a small diffraction-limited integral field unit in the NIR. Modularity and fibre-feeding allow ANDES to be placed partly on the ELT Nasmyth platform and partly in the Coud\'e room. ANDES has a wide range of groundbreaking science cases spanning nearly all areas of research in astrophysics and even fundamental physics. Among the top science cases, there are the detection of biosignatures from exoplanet atmospheres, finding the fingerprints of the first generation of stars, tests on the stability of Nature's fundamental couplings, and the direct detection of the cosmic acceleration. We present spatially resolved VLT/SINFONI spectroscopy with adaptive optics of type-2 active galactic nuclei (AGN) from the SINFONI Survey for Unveiling the Physics and Effect of Radiative feedback (SUPER), which targeted X-ray bright ($L_{2-10 keV}\gtrsim10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$) AGN at Cosmic Noon ($z\sim2$). Our analysis of the rest-frame optical spectra unveils ionised outflows in all seven examined targets, as traced via [OIII]$\lambda$5007 line emission, moving at $v\gtrsim600$ km s$^{-1}$. In six objects these outflows are clearly spatially resolved and extend on 2-4 kpc scales, whereas marginally resolved in the remaining one. Interestingly, these SUPER type-2 AGN are all heavily obscured sources ($N_{H}\gtrsim10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$) and host faster ionised outflows than their type-1 counterparts within the same range of bolometric luminosity ($L_{bol} \sim 10^{44.8-46.5}$ erg s$^{-1}$). SUPER has hence provided observational evidence that the type-1/type-2 dichotomy at $z\sim2$ might not be driven simply by projection effects, but might reflect two distinct obscuring life stages of active galaxies, as predicted by evolutionary models. Within this picture, SUPER type-2 AGN might be undergoing the 'blow-out' phase, where the large amount of obscuring material efficiently accelerates large-scale outflows via radiation pressure on dust, eventually unveiling the central active nucleus and signal the start of the bright, unobscured type-1 AGN phase. Moreover, the overall population of ionised outflows detected in SUPER has velocities comparable with the escape speed of their dark matter halos, and in general high enough to reach 30-50 kpc distances from the centre. These outflows are hence likely to sweep away the gas (at least) out of the baryonic disk and/or to heat the host gas reservoir, thus reducing and possibly quenching star formation., Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures. Protoclusters at $z>2$ are gas-rich regions characterized by high star-formation activity. The same physical properties that enhance star formation in protoclusters are also thought to boost the growth of SMBHs. We aim to test this scenario by probing the AGN content of SPT2349-56, a massive, gas-rich, and highly star-forming protocluster core at $z=4.3$ discovered as an overdensity of DSFGs, via Chandra (200 ks) observations, and comparing the results with the field environment. We detected two protocluster members, corresponding to an AGN fraction among DSFGs of $\approx10\%$. This value is consistent with other protoclusters at $z=2-4$, but higher than the AGN incidence among DSFGs in the field environment. Both AGN are heavily obscured sources and hosted in star-forming galaxies with $\approx3\times10^{10}\,\mathrm{M_\odot}$ stellar masses. We estimate that the ISM in the host galaxies can contribute significantly to the nuclear obscuration. One of the two AGN is highly luminous ($L_X=2\times10^{45}\,\mathrm{erg\,s^{-1}}$) and Compton-thick ($N_H=2\times10^{24}\,\mathrm{cm^{-2}}$), and likely powered by a $M_{BH}>6\times10^8\,\mathrm{M_\odot}$ SMBH. Its high accretion rate suggests that it is in the phase of efficient growth required to explain the presence of extremely massive SMBHs in the centers of local galaxy clusters. Considering SPT2349-56 and DRC, a similar protocuster at $z=4$, we find that gas-rich protocluster cores at $z\approx4$ enhance the triggering of luminous (log$\frac{L_X}{\mathrm{erg\,s^{-1}}}=45-46$) AGN by 3-5 orders of magnitude with respect to the field environment. Our results indicate that gas-rich protoclusters at high redshift boost the growth of SMBHs, which will likely impact the subsequent evolution of the structures, and thus represent key science targets to obtain a complete understanding of the relation between environment and galaxy evolution., Comment: Submitted to A&A, referee comments included

WST - Widefield Spectroscopic Telescope: We summarise the design challenges of instrumentation for a proposed 12m class Telescope that aims to provide a large (>2.5 square degree) field of view and enable simultaneous Multi-object (> 20,000 objects) and Integral Field spectroscopy (inner 3x3 arcminutes field of view), initially at visible wavelengths. For the MOS mode, instrumentation includes the fiber positioning units, fiber runs and the high (R~40,000) and low (R~3,000 - 4,000) resolution spectrographs. For the MUSE like Integral Field Spectrograph, this includes the relay from the Telescope Focal Plane, the multi-stage splitting and slicing and almost 150 identical spectrographs. An increasing number of observations and simulations suggests that low-power (<10$^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$) jets may be a significant channel of feedback produced by active galactic nuclei (AGN), but little is known about their actual effect on their host galaxies from the observational point of view. We targeted four luminous type 2 AGN hosting moderately powerful radio emission ($\sim$10$^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$), two of which and possibly a third are associated with jets, with optical integral field spectroscopy observations from the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) at the Very Large Telescope (VLT) to analyze the properties of their ionized gas as well as the properties and effects of ionized outflows. We combined these observations with Very Large Array (VLA) and e-MERLIN data to investigate the relations and interactions between the radio jets and host galaxies. We detected ionized outflows as traced by the fast bulk motion of the gas. The outflows extended over kiloparsec scales in the direction of the jet, when present. In the two sources with resolved radio jets, we detected a strong enhancement in the emission-line velocity dispersion (up to 1000 km s$^{-1}$) perpendicular to the direction of the radio jets. We also found a correlation between the mass and the energetics of this high-velocity dispersion gas and the radio power, which supports the idea that the radio emission may cause the enhanced turbulence. This phenomenon, which is now being observed in an increasing number of objects, might represent an important channel for AGN feedback on galaxies., Comment: 18 pages, 17 figures

We present a new high-precision strong lensing model of PLCK G287.0$+$32.9, a massive lens galaxy cluster at $z=0.383$, with the aim to get an accurate estimation of its effective Einstein radius and total mass distribution. We also present a spectroscopic catalog containing accurate redshift measurements for 490 objects, including multiply-lensed sources and cluster member galaxies. We exploit high-quality spectroscopic data from three pointings of the VLT Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer, covering a central $3~\rm{arcmin}^2$ region of the cluster. We complete the spectroscopic catalog by including redshift measurements from VLT-VIMOS and KECK-DEIMOS. We identify 129 spectroscopic cluster member galaxies, with redshift values $0.360 \leq z \leq 0.405$ and $m_{\rm{F160W}} \leq 21$, and 24 photometric ones identified with a Convolutional Neural Network from ancillary HST imaging. We also identify 114 multiple images from 28 background sources, of which 84 images from 16 sources are new and the remaining ones were identified in previous work. The best-fitting lens model shows a root mean square separation value between the predicted and observed positions of the multiple images of $0.75''$, corresponding to an improvement in reconstructing the observed positions of the multiple images of a factor of $2.5$ with respect to previous models. Using the predictive power of our new lens model we find 3 new multiple images and we confirm the configuration of three systems of multiple images that were not used for the optimization of the model. The derived total mass distribution confirms this cluster to be a very prominent gravitational lens with an effective Einstein $\theta_{E} = 43.4'' \pm 0.1''$, that is in agreement with previous estimates and corresponds to a total mass enclosed in the critical curve of $M_E = {3.33}_{-0.07}^{+0.02} \times{ 10^{14} M_\odot}$., Comment: submitted to "Astronomy & Astrophysics" and accepted the on January 29th 2024

We present HOMERUN (Highly Optimized Multi-cloud Emission-line Ratios Using photo-ionizatioN), a new approach to modelling emission lines from photoionized gas that can simultaneously reproduce all observed line intensities from a wide range of ionization levels and with high accuracy. Our approach is based on the weighted combination of multiple single-cloud photoionization models and, contrary to previous works, the novelty of our approach consists in using the weights as free parameters of the fit and constraining them with the observed data. One of the main applications of HOMERUN is the accurate determination of gas-phase metallicities and we show that a critical point is to allow for a variation of the N/O and S/O abundance ratios which can significantly improve the quality of the fit and the accuracy of the results. Moreover, our approach provides a major improvement compared to the single-cloud, constant-pressure models commonly used in the literature. By using high-quality literature spectra of H ii regions where 10 to 20 emission lines (including several auroral lines) are detected with high signal-to-noise ratio, we show that all lines are reproduced by the model with an accuracy better than 10%. In particular, the model is able to simultaneously reproduce [O i]6300, 6363, [O ii]3726, 3729, [O iii]4959, 5007, [S ii]6717, 6731, and [S iii]9069, 9532 emission lines which, to our knowledge, is an unprecedented result. Finally, we show that the gas metallicities estimated with our models for HII regions in the Milky Way are in agreement with the stellar metallicities than the estimates based on the Te-method. Overall, our method provides a new accurate tool to estimate the metallicity and the physical conditions of the ionized gas. The High-Resolution Multi-Object Spectrograph (HRMOS) is a facility instrument that we plan to propose for the Very Large Telescope (VLT) of the European Southern Observatory (ESO), following the initial presentation at the VLT 2030 workshop held at ESO in June 2019. HRMOS provides a combination of capabilities that are essential to carry out breakthrough science across a broad range of active research areas from stellar astrophysics and exoplanet studies to Galactic and Local Group archaeology. HRMOS fills a gap in capabilities amongst the landscape of future instrumentation planned for the next decade. The key characteristics of HRMOS will be high spectral resolution (R = 60000 - 80000) combined with multi-object (20-100) capabilities and long term stability that will provide excellent radial velocity precision and accuracy (10m/s). Initial designs predict that a SNR~100 will be achievable in about one hour for a star with mag(AB) = 15, while with the same exposure time a SNR~ 30 will be reached for a star with mag(AB) = 17. The combination of high resolution and multiplexing with wavelength coverage extending to relatively blue wavelengths (down to 380\,nm), makes HRMOS a spectrograph that will push the boundaries of our knowledge and that is envisioned as a workhorse instrument in the future. We present the detailed analysis of the thermal, diffuse emission of the proto-intracluster medium (ICM) detected in the halo of the Spiderweb Galaxy at z=2.16, within a radius of $\sim$ 150 kpc. We combined deep X-ray data from Chandra and millimeter observations of the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect obtained by ALMA. Thanks to independent measurements of the pressure profile from ALMA SZ observation and the electron density profile from the available X-ray data, we derived, for the first time, the temperature profile in the ICM of a z>2 protocluster. It reveals the presence of a strong cool core (comparable to the local ones) that may host a significant mass deposition flow, consistent with measured local star formation values. We also find mild evidence of an asymmetry in the X-ray surface brightness distribution, which may be tentatively associated with a cavity carved into the proto-ICM by the radio jets or, alternatively, may be due to the young dynamical status of the halo. The cooling time of baryons in the core of the Spiderweb Protocluster is estimated to be $\sim$ 0.1 Gyr, implying that the baryon cycle in the first stages of the protocluster formation is characterised by a high-duty cycle and a very active environment. In the case of the Spiderweb protocluster, we are witnessing the presence of a strongly peaked core that is possibily hosting a cooling flow with a mass deposition rate up to 250-1000 $M_{\odot}$/yr, responsible for feeding both the central supermassive black hole and the high star formation rate observed in the Spiderweb Galaxy. This phase is expected to be rapidly followed by active galactic nucleus feedback events, whose onset may have already left an imprint in the radio and X-ray appearance of the Spiderweb protocluster, eventually driving the ICM into a self-regulated, long-term evolution in less than one Gyr.

Overdense regions at high redshift ($z \gtrsim 2$) are perfect laboratories to study the relations between environment and SMBH growth, and the AGN feedback processes on the surrounding galaxies and diffuse gas. In this white paper, we discuss how AXIS will 1) constrain the AGN incidence in protoclusters, as a function of parameters such as redshift, overdensity, mass of the structure; 2) search for low-luminosity and obscured AGN in the satellite galaxies of luminous QSOs at $z>6$, exploiting the large galaxy density around such biased objects; 3) probe the AGN feedback on the proto-ICM via the measurement of the AGN contribution to the gas ionization and excitation, and the detection of extended X-ray emission from the ionized gas and from radio jets; 4) discover new large-scale structures in the wide and deep AXIS surveys as spikes in the redshift distribution of X-ray sources. These goals can be achieved only with an X-ray mission with the capabilities of AXIS, ensuring a strong synergy with current and future state-of-the-art facilities in other wavelengths. Stellar and black hole feedback heat and disperse surrounding cold gas clouds, launching gas flows off circumnuclear and galactic disks and producing a dynamic interstellar medium. On large scales bordering the cosmic web, feedback drives enriched gas out of galaxies and groups, seeding the intergalactic medium with heavy elements. In this way, feedback shapes galaxy evolution by shutting down star formation and ultimately curtailing the growth of structure after the peak at redshift 2-3. To understand the complex interplay between gravity and feedback, we must resolve both the key physics within galaxies and map the impact of these processes over large scales, out into the cosmic web. The Advanced X-ray Imaging Satellite (AXIS) is a proposed X-ray probe mission for the 2030s with arcsecond spatial resolution, large effective area, and low background. We study the perturbations in the temperature (and density) distribution for 28 clusters selected from the CHEX-MATE sample to evaluate and characterize the level of inhomogeneities and the related dynamical state of the ICM. We use these spatially resolved 2D distributions to measure the global and radial scatter and identify the regions that deviate the most from the average distribution. During this process, we introduce three dynamical state estimators and produce clean temperature profiles after removing the most deviant regions. We find that the temperature distribution of most of the clusters is skewed towards high temperatures and is well described by a log-normal function. There is no indication that the number of regions deviating more than 1$\sigma$ from the azimuthal value is correlated with the dynamical state inferred from morphological estimators. The removal of these regions leads to local temperature variations up to 10-20% and an average increase of $\sim$5% in the overall cluster temperatures. The measured relative intrinsic scatter within $R_{500}$, $\sigma_{T,int}/T$, has values of 0.17$^{+0.08}_{-0.05}$, and is almost independent of the cluster mass and dynamical state. Comparing the scatter of temperature and density profiles to hydrodynamic simulations, we constrain the average Mach number regime of the sample to $M_{3D}$=0.36$^{+0.16}_{-0.09}$. We infer the ratio between the energy in turbulence and the thermal energy, and translate this ratio in terms of a predicted hydrostatic mass bias $b$, estimating an average value of $b\sim$0.11 (covering a range between 0 and 0.37) within $R_{500}$. This study provides detailed temperature fluctuation measurements for 28 CHEX-MATE clusters which can be used to study turbulence, derive the mass bias, and make predictions on the scaling relation properties., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

This work addresses the need for efficient waste sorting strategies in Materials Recovery Facilities to minimize the environmental impact of rising waste. We propose resource-constrained semantic segmentation models for segmenting recyclable waste in industrial settings. Our goal is to develop models that fit within a 10MB memory constraint, suitable for edge applications with limited processing capacity. We perform the experiments on three networks: ICNet, BiSeNet (Xception39 backbone), and ENet. Given the aforementioned limitation, we implement quantization and pruning techniques on the broader nets, achieving positive results while marginally impacting the Mean IoU metric. Furthermore, we propose a combination of Focal and Lov\'asz loss that addresses the implicit class imbalance resulting in better performance compared with the Cross-entropy loss function., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Hyperspectral images (HSI) have become popular for analysing remotely sensed images in multiple domain like agriculture, medical. However, existing models struggle with complex relationships and characteristics of spectral-spatial data due to the multi-band nature and data redundancy of hyperspectral data. To address this limitation, we propose a new network called DiffSpectralNet, which combines diffusion and transformer techniques. Our approach involves a two-step process. First, we use an unsupervised learning framework based on the diffusion model to extract both high-level and low-level spectral-spatial features. The diffusion method is capable of extracting diverse and meaningful spectral-spatial features, leading to improvement in HSI classification. Then, we employ a pretrained denoising U-Net to extract intermediate hierarchical features for classification. Finally, we use a supervised transformer-based classifier to perform the HSI classification. Through comprehensive experiments on HSI datasets, we evaluate the classification performance of DiffSpectralNet. The results demonstrate that our framework significantly outperforms existing approaches, achieving state-of-the-art performance., Comment: 18 pages

Given that a conventional laparoscope only provides a two-dimensional (2-D) view, the detection and diagnosis of medical ailments can be challenging. To overcome the visual constraints associated with laparoscopy, the use of laparoscopic images and videos to reconstruct the three-dimensional (3-D) anatomical structure of the abdomen has proven to be a promising approach. Neural Radiance Fields (NeRFs) have recently gained attention thanks to their ability to generate photorealistic images from a 3-D static scene, thus facilitating a more comprehensive exploration of the abdomen through the synthesis of new views. This distinguishes NeRFs from alternative methods such as Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) and depth estimation. In this paper, we present a comprehensive examination of NeRFs in the context of laparoscopy surgical videos, with the goal of rendering abdominal scenes in 3-D. We present an analysis of the gas kinematics in NGC 2992, based on VLT/MUSE, ALMA and VLA data, aimed at characterising the disk, the wind and their interplay in the cold molecular and warm ionised phases. CO(2-1) and H$\rm \alpha~$ arise from a multiphase disk with inclination 80 deg and radii 1.5 and 1.8 kpc, respectively. We find that the velocity dispersion of the cold molecular phase is consistent with that of star forming galaxies at the same redshift, except in the inner 600 pc region, and in the region between the cone walls and the disk. This suggests that a disk-wind interaction locally boosts the gas turbulence. We detect a clumpy ionised wind distributed in two wide opening angle ionisation cones reaching scales of 7 kpc. The [O III] wind expands with velocity exceeding -1000 km/s in the inner 600 pc, a factor of 5 larger than the previously reported wind velocity. Based on spatially resolved electron density and ionisation parameter maps, we infer an ionised outflow mass of $M_{\rm of,ion} = (3.2 \pm 0.3) \times \, 10^7 \, M_{\odot}$, and a total ionised outflow rate of $\dot M_{\rm of,ion}=13.5\pm1$ \sfr. We detected clumps of cold molecular gas located above and below the disk reaching maximum projected distances and velocities of 1.7 kpc and 200 km/s, respectively. On these scales, the wind is multiphase, with a fast ionised component and a slower molecular one, and a total mass of $M_{\rm of, ion+mol}= 5.8 \times 10^7 \, M_{\odot}$, of which the molecular component carries the bulk of the mass. The dusty molecular outflowing clumps and the turbulent ionised gas are located at the edges of the radio bubbles, suggesting that the bubbles interact with the surrounding medium through shocks. Studying the feedback process of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) requires characterising multiple kinematical components, such as rotating gas and stellar disks, outflows, inflows, and jets. To compare the observed properties with theoretical predictions of galaxy evolution and feedback models and to assess the mutual interaction and energy injection rate into the interstellar medium (ISM), one usually relies on simplified kinematic models. These models have several limitations, as they often do not take into account projection effects, beam smearing and the surface brightness distribution of the emitting medium. Here, we present MOKA3D, an innovative approach to model the 3D gas kinematics from integral field spectroscopy observations. In this first paper, we discuss its application to the case of AGN ionised outflows, whose observed clumpy emission and apparently irregular kinematics are only marginally accounted for by existing kinematical models. Unlike previous works, our model does not assume the surface brightness distribution of the gas, but exploits a novel procedure to derive it from the observations by reconstructing the 3D distribution of emitting clouds and providing accurate estimates of the spatially resolved outflow physical properties (e.g. mass rate, kinetic energy). As an example, we demonstrate the capabilities of our method by applying it to three nearby Seyfert-II galaxies observed with MUSE at the VLT and selected from the MAGNUM survey, showing that the complex kinematic features observed can be described by a conical outflow with a constant radial velocity field and a clumpy distribution of clouds., Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures

The 500ks Chandra ACIS-I observation of the field around the $z=6.31$ quasar SDSS J1030+0524 is currently the 5th deepest extragalactic X-ray survey. The rich multi-band coverage of the field allowed for an effective identification and redshift determination of the X-ray source counterparts: to date a catalog of 243 extragalactic X-ray sources with either a spectroscopic or photometric redshift estimate in the range $z\approx0-6$ is available over a 355 arcmin$^2$ area. Given its depth and the multi-band information, this catalog is an excellent resource to investigate X-ray spectral properties of distant Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and derive the redshift evolution of their obscuration. We performed a thorough X-ray spectral analysis for each object in the sample, measuring its nuclear column density $N_{\rm H}$ and intrinsic (de-absorbed) 2-10 keV rest-frame luminosity, $L_{2-10}$. Whenever possible, we also used the presence of the Fe K$_\alpha$ emission line to improve the photometric redshift estimates. We measured the fractions of AGN hidden by column densities in excess of $10^{22}$ and $10^{23}$cm$^{-2}$ ($f_{22}$ and $f_{23}$, respectively) as a function of $L_{2-10}$ and redshift, and corrected for selection effects to recover the intrinsic obscured fractions. At $z\sim 1.2$, we found $f_{22}\sim0.7-0.8$ and $f_{23}\sim0.5-0.6$, respectively, in broad agreement with the results from other X-ray surveys. No significant variations with X-ray luminosity were found within the limited luminosity range probed by our sample (log$L_{2-10}\sim 42.8-44.3$). When focusing on luminous AGN with log$L_{2-10}\sim44$ to maximize the sample completeness up to large cosmological distances, we did not observe any significant change in $f_{22}$ or $f_{23}$ over the redshift range $z\sim0.8-3$. The novel Gaia Multi Peak (GMP) technique has proven to be able to successfully select dual and lensed AGN candidates at sub-arcsec separations. Both populations are important because dual AGN represent one of the central, still largely untested, predictions of lamdaCDM cosmology, and compact lensed quasars allow to probe the central regions of the lensing galaxies. In this work, we present high spatial resolution spectroscopy of twelve GMP-selected systems. We use the the adaptive-optics assisted integral-field spectrograph MUSE at VLT to resolve each system and study the nature of each component. All the targets reveal the presence of two components confirming the GMP selection. We classify five targets as dual AGN, two as lensed systems, and five as a chance alignment of a star and and AGN. Having separations between 0.30" and 0.86", these dual and lensed systems are, to date, among the most compact ever discovered at z >0.3. This is the largest sample of distant dual AGN with sub-arcsec separations ever presented in a single paper., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures

The Gaia-Multi-Peak (GMP) technique can be used to identify large numbers of dual or lensed AGN candidates at sub-arcsec separation, allowing us to study both multiple SMBHs in the same galaxy and rare, compact lensed systems. The observed samples can be used to test the predictions of the models of SMBH merging once 1) the selection function of the GMP technique is known, and 2) each system has been classified as dual AGN, lensed AGN, or AGN/star alignment. Here we show that the GMP selection is very efficient for separations above 0.15'' when the secondary (fainter) object has magnitude G<20.5. We present the spectroscopic classification of five GMP candidates using VLT/ERIS and Keck/OSIRIS, and compare them with the classifications obtained from: a) the near-IR colors of 7 systems obtained with LBT/LUCI, and b) the analysis of the total, spatially-unresolved spectra. We conclude that colors and integrated spectra can already provide reliable classifications of many systems. Finally, we summarize the confirmed dual AGNs at z>0.5 selected by the GMP technique, and compare this sample with other such systems from the literature, concluding that GMP can provide a large number of confirmed dual AGNs at separations below 7 kpc., Comment: 14 pages,A&A, in press

Powerful winds at accretion-disk scales have been observed in the past 20 years in many AGN. These are the so-called ultrafast outflows (UFOs). Outflows are intimately related to mass accretion through the conservation of angular momentum, and they are therefore a key ingredient of most accretion disk models around black holes (BHs). Nuclear winds and outflows can also provide the feedback that regulates the joint BH and galaxy growth. We reconsidered UFO observations in the framework of disk-wind scenarios, both magnetohydrodynamic disk winds and radiatively driven winds. We studied the statistical properties of observed UFOs from the literature and derived the distribution functions of the ratio $\bar \omega$ of the mass-outflow and -inflow rates and the ratio $\lambda_w$ of the mass-outflow and the Eddington accretion rates. We studied the links between $\bar \omega$ and $\lambda_w$ and $\lambda={L_{bol}}/{L_{Edd}}$. We derived the typical wind-activity history in our sources by assuming that it can be statistically described by population functions. We find that the distribution functions of $\bar \omega$ and $\lambda_w$ can be described as power laws above some thresholds, suggesting that there may be many wind subevents for each major wind event in each AGN activity cycle, which is a fractal behavior. We then introduced a cellular automaton to investigate how the dynamical properties of an idealized disk-wind system change following the introduction of feedback rules. We find that without feedback, the system is overcritical. Conversely, when feedback is present, regardless of whether it is magnetic or radiation driven, the system can be driven toward a self-organized critical state.Our results corroborate the hypothesis that AGN feedback is a necessary key ingredient in disk-wind systems, and following this, in shaping the coevolution of galaxies and supermassive BHs., Comment: Astronomy & Astrophysics in press. We investigate the properties of cool cores in an optimally selected sample of 37 massive and X-ray-bright galaxy clusters, with regular morphologies, observed with Chandra. We measured the density, temperature, and abundance radial profiles of their intracluster medium (ICM). From these independent quantities, we computed the cooling (tcool) free-fall (tff), and turbulence (teddy) timescales as a function of radius. By requiring the profile-crossing condition, tcool=teddy=1, we measured the cool-core condensation radius Rccc, within which the balancing feeding and feedback processes generate the turbulent condensation rain and related chaotic cold accretion (CCA). We also constrained the complementary (quenched) cooling flow radius Rqcf, obtained via the condition tcool=25Xtff, that encompasses the region of thermally unstable cooling. We find that in our cluster sample and in the limited redshift range considered (1.3E14

Galaxy clusters are the most massive gravitationally bound structures in the Universe, comprising thousands of galaxies and pervaded by a diffuse, hot ``intracluster medium'' (ICM) that dominates the baryonic content of these systems. The formation and evolution of the ICM across cosmic time is thought to be driven by the continuous accretion of matter from the large-scale filamentary surroundings and dramatic merger events with other clusters or groups. Until now, however, direct observations of the intracluster gas have been limited only to mature clusters in the latter three-quarters of the history of the Universe, and we have been lacking a direct view of the hot, thermalized cluster atmosphere at the epoch when the first massive clusters formed. Here we report the detection (about $6\sigma$) of the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect in the direction of a protocluster. In fact, the SZ signal reveals the ICM thermal energy in a way that is insensitive to cosmological dimming, making it ideal for tracing the thermal history of cosmic structures. This result indicates the presence of a nascent ICM within the Spiderweb protocluster at redshift $z=2.156$, around 10 billion years ago. The amplitude and morphology of the detected signal show that the SZ effect from the protocluster is lower than expected from dynamical considerations and comparable with that of lower-redshift group-scale systems, consistent with expectations for a dynamically active progenitor of a local galaxy cluster., Comment: 18 pages (main text + methods), 10 figures, 2 tables; published online in Nature on March 29th, 2023

We present the results of a spectroscopic campaign with the Multi-Object Double Spectrograph (MODS) instrument mounted on the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT), aimed at obtaining a spectroscopic redshift for seven Chandra J1030 sources with a photometric redshift >=2.7 and optical magnitude r_AB=[24.5-26.5]. We obtained a spectroscopic redshift for five out of seven targets: all of them have z_spec>=2.5, thus probing the reliability of the Chandra J1030 photometric redshifts. The spectroscopic campaign led to the serendipitous discovery of a z~2.78 large scale structure (LSS) in the J1030 field: the structure contains four X-ray sources (three of which were targeted in the LBT-MODS campaign) and two non-X-ray detected galaxies for which a VLT-MUSE spectrum was already available. The X-ray members of the LSS are hosted in galaxies that are significantly more massive (log(M_*/M_sun)=[10.0-11.1]) than those hosting the two MUSE-detected sources (log(M_*/M_sun)<10). Both observations and simulations show that massive galaxies, and particularly objects having log(M_*/M_sun)>10, are among the best tracers of large scale structures and filaments in the cosmic web. Consequently, our result can explain why X-ray-detected AGN have also been shown to be efficient tracers of large scale structures., Comment: 16 pages, 9 Figures. We investigate the extreme X-ray variability of a z = 1.608 active galactic nucleus in the 7 Ms Chandra Deep Field-South (XID 403), which showed two significant X-ray brightening events. In the first event, XID 403 brightened by a factor of $>2.5$ in $\lesssim6.1$ rest-frame days in the observed-frame 0.5-5 keV band. The event lasted for $\approx5.0\textrm{-}7.3$ days, and then XID 403 dimmed by a factor of $>6.0$ in $\lesssim6.1$ days. After $\approx1.1\textrm{-}2.5$ years in the rest frame (including long observational gaps), it brightened again with the 0.5-5 keV flux increasing by a factor of $>12.6$. The second event lasted over 251 days and the source remained bright until the end of the 7 Ms exposure. The spectrum is a steep power law (photon index $\Gamma=2.8\pm0.3$) without obscuration during the second outburst, and the rest-frame 2-10 keV luminosity reaches $1.5^{+0.8}_{-0.5}\times10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$; there is no significant spectral evolution within this epoch. The infrared-to-UV spectral energy distribution of XID 403 is dominated by the host galaxy. There is no significant optical/UV variability and $R$-band (rest-frame $\approx2500$ $\unicode{xC5}$) brightening contemporaneous with the X-ray brightening. The extreme X-ray variability is likely due to two X-ray unveiling events, where the line of sight to the corona is no longer shielded by high-density gas clumps in a small-scale dust-free absorber. XID 403 is probably a high-redshift analog of local narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies, and the X-ray absorber is a powerful accretion-disk wind. On the other hand, we cannot exclude the possibility that XID 403 is an unusual candidate for tidal disruption events., Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

In the nearby universe jets from AGN are observed to have a dramatic impact on their surrounding extragalactic environment. Their effect at the `cosmic noon' (z>1.5), the epoch when star formation and AGN activity peak, is instead much less constrained. Here we present a study of the giant (750 kpc) radio galaxy 103025+052430 located at the centre of a protocluster at redshift z=1.7, with a focus on its interaction with the external medium. We present new LOFAR observations at 144 MHz, which we combine with VLA 1.4 GHz and 0.5-7 keV Chandra archival data. The new map at 144 MHz confirms that the source has a complex morphology, possibly consistent with the `hybrid morphology' classification. The large size of the source gave us the possibility to perform a resolved radio spectral index analysis, a very unique opportunity for a source at such high redshift. This reveals a tentative flattening of the radio spectral index at the edge of the backflow in the Western lobe, which might be indicating plasma compression. The spatial coincidence between this region and the thermal X-ray bubble C suggests a causal connection between the two. Contrary to previous estimates for the bright X-ray component A, we find that inverse Compton scattering between the radio-emitting plasma of the Eastern lobe and the CMB photons can account for a large fraction (~45%-80%) of its total 0.5-7 keV measured flux. Finally, the X-ray bubble C, which is consistent with a thermal origin, is found to be significantly overpressurised with respect to the ambient medium. This suggests that it will tend to expand and release its energy in the surroundings, contributing to the overall intracluster medium heating. Overall, 103025+052430 gives us the chance to investigate the interaction between AGN jets and the surrounding gas in a system that is likely the predecessor of the rich galaxy clusters we all well know at z=0., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in A&A
