Abstract

For some professionally, vocationally, or technically oriented careers, curricula delivered in higher education establishments may focus on teaching material related to a single discipline. By contrast, multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary teaching(MITT) results in improved affective and cognitive learning and critical thinking, offering learners/students the opportunity to obtain a broad general knowledge base. Chemistry is a discipline that sits at the interface of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine(STEMM) subjects (and those aligned with or informed by STEMM subjects). This article discusses the significant potential of inclusion of chemistry in MITT activities in higher education and the real-world importance in personal, organizational, national, and global contexts. It outlines the development and implementation challenges attributed to legacy higher education infrastructures (that call for creative visionary leadership with strong and supportive management and administrative functions), and curriculum design that ensures inclusivity and collaboration and is pitched and balanced appropriately. It concludes with future possibilities, notably highlighting that chemistry, as a discipline, underpins industries that have multibillion dollar turnovers and employ millions of people across the world.

Abstract

The ubiquity of digital platforms is undeniable, as is their transactional efficiency and world-flattening possibilities. Yet, these platforms are contested battlegrounds where stakeholder power struggles reflect and influence broader societal turbulence. In the emerging era, alongside the blinding speed and global reach of the gig economy are looming specters of rentier capitalism, digi-serfdom, misinformation, data exploitation, digital addiction, and near-ungovernable algorithmic agents. To date, scholarly focus on digital platforms has been on their transactional features and impacts, dimensionalizing governance mechanisms as emanating from old economy conceptions of bottom-up or top-down checks and balances, or incentives and efficiencies. These emphases, while useful for understanding managerial control of digital platforms, largely ignore the extent to which digital platforms are contested organizational spaces, shaped by complex power dynamics. Foucault (1998: 63) asserted that power is everywhere, and that those who hold power are rarely well-understood by those who are subject to it. In seeking to rebalance and reorient digital platform research, we analyze and integrate existing research along four dimensions that shape platform power dynamics: actors, relations, faces, and struggle. We establish a future research agenda—including six testable propositions—that more thoroughly engages the critical, yet untapped, expertise of management scholars concerning platform power. 44. Free trade federalism in Australia and the European Union : judicial delimitation of legislative competence

Abstract

The Commonwealth of Australia and the European Union were each formed, in large part, with the goal of creating an internal market spanning the territory of all the constituent States, but with the intention that those constituent States should continue to enjoy a considerable measure of legislative autonomy to pass diverse laws for their own polities. In each case, this was to be achieved by the establishment of a federal (or federal-like) structure with a constitutional document adopted by the constituent States, which established this internal market of free trade between the States, and entrusted the task of adjudicating the compliance with these provisions to a central, union-level court. The High Court of Australia and the Court of Justice of the European Union have grappled with this task of how to balance the internal market against State legislative autonomy by evolving a strikingly similar jurisprudence - all the more noteworthy given the relatively limited judicial and scholarly exchange between the two systems. Both courts first ask whether the impugned law is such as to come within the scope of the free movement provisions, and then, if the law is within that scope, whether the law is nevertheless justified by reference to some legitimate purpose being pursued in a proportionate manner by the legislating State. Over the decades, both Australia and the EU have seen contention as to the proper definition of the scope of free movement provisions, with discrimination analysis and trade restriction analysis struggling for dominance. In Australia, discrimination analysis now dominates; in the EU, the jurisprudence has been cleft into several parts, some under discrimination analysis, others under trade restriction analysis. On the question of justification, Australia and the EU have evolved a considerable jurisprudential similarity both in form and in content, with this element being less controversial than the question of scope. In developing their jurisprudence of both scope and justification, the courts have played a significant role in determining the balance between the internal market and the preservation of State legislative autonomy in each system.
