We consider the classical minisuperspace model describing a closed, homogeneous and isotropic Universe, with a positive cosmological constant. Upon canonical quantization, the infinite number of possible operator orderings in the quantum Hamiltonian leads to distinct Wheeler-DeWitt equations for the wavefunction $\psi$ of the Universe. Similarly, ambiguity arises in the path-integral formulation of $\psi$, due to the infinite choices of path-integral measures for the single degree of freedom of the model. For each choice of path-integral measure, we determine the correct operator ordering of the quantum Hamiltonian and derive the exact form of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation, including all corrections in $\hbar$. Additionally, we impose Hermiticity of the Hamiltonian to deduce the Hilbert-space measure $\mu$, which appears in the definition of the Hermitian inner product. Remarkably, all quantum predictions can be expressed through the combination $\Psi=\sqrt{\mu}\, \psi$, which satisfies a universal Wheeler-DeWitt equation, independent of the initial path-integral prescription. We extend a recent de Sitter holographic proposal and entanglement entropy prescription to generic closed FRW cosmologies in arbitrary dimensions, and propose that for large classes of bouncing and Big Bang/Big Crunch cosmologies, the full spacetime can be encoded holographically on two holographic screens, associated to two antipodal observers. In the expanding phase, the two screens lie at the apparent horizons. In the contracting phase, there is an infinite number of possible trajectories of the holographic screens, which can be grouped in equivalence classes. In each class the effective holographic theory can be derived from a pair of ``parent'' screens on the apparent horizons. A number of cases including moduli dominated cosmologies escape our discussion, and it is expected that two antipodal observers and their associated screens do not suffice to reconstruct these cosmologies. The leading contributions to the entanglement entropy between the screens arise from a minimal extremal trapped or anti-trapped surface lying in the region between them. This picture entails a time-dependent realization of the ER=EPR conjecture, where an effective geometrical bridge connecting the screens via the minimal extremal surface emerges from entanglement. For the Big Crunch contracting cases, the screens disentangle and the geometrical bridge closes off when the minimal extremal trapped sphere hits the Big Crunch singularity at a finite time before the collapse of the Universe. In the context of de Sitter static-patch holography, two prescriptions have been put forward for holographic entanglement entropy computations, the monolayer and bilayer proposals. In this paper, we reformulate both prescriptions in a covariant way and extend them to include quantum corrections. We argue that the bilayer proposal is self-consistent, while the monolayer proposal exhibits contradictory behavior. In fact, the bilayer proposal leads to a stronger holographic description, in which the full spacetime is encoded on two screens at the cosmological horizons. At the classical level, we find large degeneracies of minimal extremal homologous surfaces, localized at the horizons, which can be lifted by quantum corrections. The entanglement wedges of subregions of the screens exhibit non-trivial behaviors, hinting at the existence of interesting phase transitions and non-locality in the holographic theory. In particular, while each screen encodes its corresponding static patch, we show that the entanglement wedge of the screen with the larger quantum area extends and covers the causal diamond between the screens, with a phase transition occurring when the quantum areas of the screens become equal. We argue that the capacity of the screens to encode the region between them is lost, when these are pushed further in the static patches of the observers and placed on stretched horizons., Comment: 83 pages, 11 figures. We show that vanishing of the sigma-model beta-functions for the metric $g_{\mu\nu}$, antisymmetric tensor $B_{\mu\nu}$ and dilaton $\Phi$ of any string-theory model in $D$ dimensions at tree level can be obtained from a universal effective action, provided that the field combination $\sqrt{-g}e^{-2\Phi}$ is non-dynamical. The central-charge deficit term is omitted from the action and appears as an integration constant at the level of the field equations. The analysis is done at leading order in $\alpha'$, i.e. at the two-derivative level in the effective description. It can be extended to incorporate higher order string-loop corrections, Ramond-Ramond forms and moduli fields. In all cases, the non-dynamical field combination turns out to be $\sqrt{-g}\, U$, where $U$ is the effective potential. When certain fluxes are fixed and the moduli fields are stabilized, no cosmological term will arise in the action. We study holographically non-local observables in field theories at finite temperature and in the large $d$ limit. These include the Wilson loop, the entanglement entropy, as well as an extension to various dual extremal surfaces of arbitrary codimension. The large $d$ limit creates a localized potential in the near horizon regime resulting in a simplification of the analysis for the non-local observables, while at the same time retaining their qualitative physical properties. Moreover, we study the monotonicity of the coefficient $\alpha$ of the entanglement's area term, the so called area theorem. We find that the difference between the UV and IR of the $\alpha$-values, normalized with the thermal entropy, converges at large $d$ to a constant value which is obtained analytically. Therefore, the large $d$ limit may be used as tool for the study and (in)validation of the renormalization group monotonicity theorems. All the expectation values of the observables under study show rapid convergence to certain values as $d$ increases. We study the entanglement between soft and hard particles produced in generic scattering processes in QED. The reduced density matrix for the hard particles, obtained via tracing over the entire spectrum of soft photons, is shown to have a large eigenvalue, which governs the behavior of the Renyi entropies and of the non-analytic part of the entanglement entropy at low orders in perturbation theory. The leading perturbative entanglement entropy is logarithmically IR divergent. The coefficient of the IR divergence exhibits certain universality properties, irrespectively of the dressing of the asymptotic charged particles and the detailed properties of the initial state. In a certain kinematical limit, the coefficient is proportional to the cusp anomalous dimension in QED. For Fock basis computations associated with two-electron scattering, we derive an exact expression for the large eigenvalue of the density matrix in terms of hard scattering amplitudes, which is valid at any finite order in perturbation theory. As a result, the IR logarithmic divergences appearing in the expressions for the Renyi and entanglement entropies persist at any finite order of the perturbative expansion. To all orders, however, the IR logarithmic divergences exponentiate, rendering the large eigenvalue of the density matrix IR finite. The all-orders Renyi entropies (per unit time, per particle flux), which are shown to be proportional to the total inclusive cross-section in the initial state, are also free of IR divergences. We review some recent results concerning the Hartle--Hawking wavefunction of the universe. We focus on pure Einstein theory of gravity in the presence of a positive cosmological constant. We carefully implement the gauge-fixing procedure for the minisuperspace path integral, by identifying the single modulus and by using diffeomorphism-invariant measures for the ghosts and the scale factor. Field redefinitions of the scale factor yield different prescriptions for computing the no-boundary ground-state wavefunction. They give rise to an infinite set of ground-state wavefunctions, each satisfying a different Wheeler--DeWitt equation, at the semi-classical level. The differences in the form of the Wheeler--DeWitt equations can be traced to ordering ambiguities in constructing the Hamiltonian upon canonical quantization. However, the inner products of the corresponding Hilbert spaces turn out to be equivalent, at least semi-classically. Thus, the model yields universal quantum predictions.

We consider the Hartle-Hawking wavefunction of the universe defined as a Euclidean path integral that satisfies the "no-boundary proposal." We focus on the simplest minisuperspace model that comprises a single scale factor degree of freedom and a positive cosmological constant. The model can be seen as a non-linear $\sigma$-model with a line-segment base. We reduce the path integral over the lapse function to an integral over the proper length of the base and use diffeomorphism-invariant measures for the ghosts and the scale factor. As a result, the gauge-fixed path integral is independent of the gauge. However, we point out that all field redefinitions of the scale factor degree of freedom yield different choices of gauge-invariant path-integral measures. For each prescription, we compute the wavefunction at the semi-classical level and find a different result. We resolve in each case the ambiguity in the form of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation at this level of approximation. By imposing that the Hamiltonians associated with these possibly distinct quantum theories are Hermitian, we determine the inner products of the corresponding Hilbert spaces and find that they lead to a universal norm, at least semi-classically. Quantum predictions are thus independent of the prescription at this level of approximation. We consider scattering of Faddeev-Kulish electrons in QED and study the entanglement between the hard and soft particles in the final state at the perturbative level. The soft photon spectrum naturally splits into two parts: i) soft photons with energies less than a characteristic infrared scale $E_d$ present in the clouds accompanying the asymptotic charged particles, and ii) sufficiently low energy photons with energies greater than $E_d$, comprising the soft part of the emitted radiation. We construct the density matrix associated with tracing over the radiative soft photons and calculate the entanglement entropy perturbatively. We find that the entanglement entropy is free of any infrared divergences order by order in perturbation theory. On the other hand infrared divergences in the perturbative expansion for the entanglement entropy appear upon tracing over the entire spectrum of soft photons, including those in the clouds. To leading order the entanglement entropy is set by the square of the Fock basis amplitude for real single soft photon emission, which leads to a logarithmic infrared divergence when integrated over the photon momentum. We define a three-dimensional quantum theory of gravity as the holographic dual of the Liouville conformal field theory. The theory is consistent and unitary by definition. The corresponding theory of gravity with negative cosmological constant has peculiar properties. The quantum theory has no normalisable AdS3 vacuum. The model contains primary black holes with zero spin. All states can be interpreted as black holes dressed with boundary gravitons. There is a unique universal interaction between these states consistent with unitarity and the conformal symmetry of the model. Explicit tests are presented of the conjectured entropic origin of the gravitational force. The gravitational force on a test particle in the vicinity of the horizon of a large Schwarzschild black hole in arbitrary spacetime dimensions is obtained as entropic force. The same conclusion can be reached for the cases of a large electrically charged black hole and a large slowly rotating Kerr black hole. The generalization along the same lines to a test mass in the field of an arbitrary spherical star is also studied and found not to be possible. The ${\cal R}^2$ scale invariant gravity theory coupled to conformally invariant matter is investigated. We show that in the non-supersymmetric case the conformally coupled scalars belong to an $SO(1, 1+n)/SO(1+n)$ manifold, while in the supersymmetric case the scalar manifold becomes isomorphic to the K\"ahlerian space ${\cal M}_n$=$SU(1, 1+n)/ U(1)\times SU(1+n)$. In both cases when the underlying scale symmetry is preserved the vacuum corresponds to de Sitter space. Once the scale symmetry is broken by quantum effects, a transition to flat space becomes possible. We argue that the scale violating terms are induced by anomalies related to a $U(1)_R$ symmetry. The anomaly is resolved via the gauging of a Peccei-Quinn axion shift symmetry. The theory describes an inflationary transition from de Sitter to flat Minkowski space, very similar to the Starobinsky inflationary model. The extension to metastable de Sitter superstring vacua is also investigated. The scalar manifold is extended to a much richer manifold, but it contains always ${\cal M}_n$ as a sub-manifold. In superstrings the metastability is induced by axions that cure the anomalies in chiral $N=1$ (or even $N=0$) supersymmetric vacua via a Green-Schwarz/Peccei-Quinn mechanism generalized to four dimensions. Space-filling S-branes can mediate a transition between a contracting and an expanding universe in the Einstein frame. Following up on previous work that uncovered such bouncing solutions in the context of weakly coupled thermal configurations of a certain class of type II superstrings, we set up here the formalism in which we can study the evolution of metric fluctuations across such an S-brane. Our work shows that the specific nature of the S-brane, which is sourced by non-trivial massless thermal string states and appears when the universe reaches a maximal critical temperature, allows for a scale invariant spectrum of curvature fluctuations to manifest at late times via a stringy realization of the matter bounce scenario. The finite energy density at the transition from contraction to expansion provides calculational control over the propagation of the curvature perturbations through the bounce, furnishing a working proof of concept that such a stringy universe can result in viable late time cosmology., Comment: 30 pages, 3 appendices, typos corrected, references added, matches version to appear in JCAP

We review recent progress in string cosmology, where string dualities are applied so as to obtain complete cosmological evolutions, free of any essential singularities. Two classes of models are analyzed. The first class consists of string gas cosmologies associated to certain thermal configurations of type II N=(4,0) models. Finite temperature is introduced along with non-trivial "gravito-magnetic" fluxes that lift the Hagedorn instabilities of the canonical ensemble and restore thermal T-duality symmetry. At a critical maximal temperature additional thermal states become massless sourcing stringy S-branes, which facilitate a bounce between the two dual, asymptotically cold phases. Unlike previous incarnations of pre-Big Bang cosmologies, the models remain perturbative throughout the cosmological evolution. The second class consists of exact solutions to classical string theory that admit a Euclidean description in terms of compact parafermionic worldsheet systems. The Euclidean target space corresponds to a non-singular, compact T-fold, which can be used to construct a normalizable Hartle-Hawking wavefunction for the cosmology., Comment: 42 pages, 3 figures, references added. We present a new class of non-singular string cosmologies in d space-time dimensions. At very early times, \tau << \tau_c, the Universe is described by a flat \sigma-model metric, a constant maximal temperature T_c and super-weak string interactions, g_str << 1. During the evolution, the metric remains flat up to \tau_c, while the string coupling grows and reaches a critical value g*_str at \tau_c. This phase is characterized by a uniform temporal distribution of spacelike branes. At later times, \tau > \tau_c, the Universe enters in a new phase of expansion, with radiation. The string coupling decreases due to the dilaton motion and asymptotes to a constant for \tau >> \tau_c. Throughout the evolution, the string coupling remains smaller than g*_str. In the Einstein frame, the cosmologies describe bouncing Universes, where two distinct phases are connected at \tau_c. In the initial contracting phase, the evolution of the scale factor is identical to that of a negatively curved Universe filled with radiation. At later times, the Universe enters in an expanding thermal phase with a running dilaton. We are presenting the basic ingredients of a stringy mechanism able to resolve both the Hagedorn instabilities of finite temperature superstrings as well as the initial singularity of the induced cosmology in arbitrary dimensions. These are shown to be generic in a large class of (4,0) type II superstring vacua, where non-trivial "gravito-magnetic" fluxes lift the Hagedorn instabilities of the thermal ensemble and the temperature duality symmetry is restored. This symmetry implies a universal maximal critical temperature. In all such models there are three characteristic regimes, each with a distinct effective field theory description: Two dual asymptotically cold regimes associated with the light thermal momentum and light thermal winding states, and the intermediate regime where additional massless thermal states appear. The partition function exhibits a conical structure as a function of the thermal modulus, irrespective of the space-time dimension. Thanks to asymptotic right-moving supersymmetry, the genus-1 partition function is well-approximated by that of massless thermal radiation in all of the three effective field theory regimes. The resulting time-evolution describes a bouncing cosmology connecting, via spacelike branes, a contracting thermal "winding" Universe to an expanding thermal "momentum" Universe, free of any essential curvature singularities. The existence of non-singular string cosmologies is established in a class of two-dimensional supersymmetric Hybrid models at finite temperature. The left-moving sector of the Hybrid models gives rise to 16 real (N_4=4) spacetime supercharges as in the usual superstring models. The right-moving sector is non-supersymmetric at the massless level, but is characterized by MSDS symmetry, which ensures boson/fermion degeneracy of the right-moving massive levels. Finite temperature configurations, which are free of Hagedorn instabilities, are constructed in the presence of non-trivial "gravito-magnetic" fluxes. These fluxes inject non-trivial winding charge into the thermal vacuum and restore the thermal T-duality symmetry associated with the Euclidean time circle. Thanks to the unbroken right-moving MSDS symmetry, the one-loop string partition function is exactly calculable beyond any alpha'-approximation. At the self-dual point new massless thermal states appear, sourcing localized spacelike branes, which can be used to connect a contracting thermal Universe to an expanding one. The resulting bouncing cosmology is free of any curvature singularities and the string coupling remains perturbative throughout the cosmological evolution., Comment: 38 pages

Two-dimensional string vacua with Massive Spectrum boson-fermion Degeneracy Symmetry (MSDS) are explicitly constructed in Type II and Heterotic superstring theories. The study of their moduli space indicates the existence of large marginal deformations that connect continuously the initial d=2, MSDS vacua to higher-dimensional conventional superstring vacua, where spacetime supersymmetry is spontaneously broken by geometrical fluxes. We find that the maximally symmetric, d=2, Type II MSDS-vacuum, is in correspondence with the maximal, N=8, d=4, gauged supergravity, where the supergravity gauging is induced by the fluxes. This correspondence is extended to less symmetric cases where the initial MSDS symmetry is reduced by orbifolds. We also exhibit and analyse thermal interpretations of some Euclidean versions of the models and identify classes of MSDS vacua that remain tachyon-free under arbitrary marginal deformations about the extended symmetry point. The connection between the two-dimensional MSDS vacua and the resulting four-dimensional effective supergravity theories arises naturally within the context of an adiabatic cosmological evolution, where the very early Universe is conjectured to be described by an MSDS-vacuum, while at late cosmological times it is described by an effective N=1 supergravity theory with spontaneously broken supersymmetry.

We extend the analysis of the recently obtained stringy cosmological solutions induced by thermal and quantum effects, once space-time supersymmetry is spontaneously broken by geometrical fluxes. Cases in which more than one modulus participating in the supersymmetry breaking mechanism are investigated. The free energy is obtained at the full string level. In the intermediate cosmological region where the temperature and the supersymmetry breaking scale are sufficiently smaller than the Hagedorn temperature, the quantum and thermal corrections are under control and calculable. The reason is that the contributions to the effective potential of the moduli that are not participating in the supersymmetry breaking are exponentially suppressed. The backreaction on the initially flat background results in many cases into cosmological evolutions, where the dynamics of all complex structure moduli is frozen. The solutions describe effectively a radiation dominated era, where thermal effects are never negligible, even if the temperature tends to zero at late times. We consider four dimensional heterotic string backgrounds for which supersymmetry is spontaneously broken via the Scherk-Schwarz mechanism on an internal spatial cycle and by finite temperature effects. We concentrate on initially flat backgrounds with N=4 and N=2 amount of supersymmetry. Thermal and quantum corrections give rise to a non-trivial cosmological evolution. We show that these corrections are under control and calculable due to the underlying no-scale structure of the effective supergravity theory. The effective Friedmann-Hubble equation involves a radiation term ~1/a^4 and a curvature term ~1/a^2, whose coefficients are functions of ratio of the gravitino mass scale to the temperature., Comment: 12+1 pages

We consider classical superstring theories on flat four dimensional space-times, and where N=4 or N=2 supersymmetry is spontaneously broken. We obtain the thermal and quantum corrections at the string one-loop level and show that the back-reaction on the space-time metric induces a cosmological evolution. We concentrate on heterotic string models obtained by compactification on a T^6 torus and on T^6/Z_2 orbifolds. The temperature T and the supersymmetry breaking scale M are generated via the Scherk-Schwarz mechanism on the Euclidean time cycle and on an internal spatial cycle respectively. The effective field theory corresponds to a no-scale supergravity, where the corresponding no-scale modulus controls the Susy-breaking scale. The classical flatness of this modulus is lifted by an effective thermal potential, given by the free energy. The gravitational field equations admit solutions where M, T and the inverse scale factor 1/a of the universe remain proportional. In particular the ratio M/T is fixed during the time evolution. We define a wave-function for string theory cosmological backgrounds. We give a prescription for computing its norm following an earlier analysis within general relativity. Under Euclidean continuation, the cosmologies we discuss in this paper are described in terms of compact parafermionic worldsheet systems. We study a moving D-brane in a time-dependent background. There is particle production both because of non-trivial cosmological evolution, and by closed string emission from the brane that gradually decelerates due to a gain in mass. We study RR flux backgrounds in two dimensional type 0 string theories. In particular, we study the relation between the 0A matrix model and the extremal black hole in two dimensions. Using T-duality we find a dual flux background in type 0B theory and propose its matrix model description. When the Fermi level is set to zero this system remains weakly coupled and exhibits a larger symmetry related to the structure of flux vacua. We propose that type 0B string theory in two dimensions admits a dual description in terms of a one dimensional bosonic matrix model of a hermitian matrix. The potential in the matrix model is symmetric with respect to the parity-like Z_2 transformation of the matrix. The two sectors in the theory, namely the NSNS and RR scalar sectors correspond to two classes of operators in the matrix model, even and odd under the Z_2 symmetry respectively. We provide evidence that the matrix model successfully reconstructs the perturbative S-matrix of the string theory, and reproduces the closed string emission amplitude from unstable D-branes. Following recent work in two dimensional bosonic string, we argue that the matrix model can be identified with the theory describing N unstable D0-branes in type 0B theory. We derive an effective topological field theory model of the four dimensional quantum Hall liquid state recently constructed by Zhang and Hu. Using a generalization of the flux attachment transformation, the effective field theory can be formulated as a U(1) Chern-Simons theory over the total configuration space $CP_3$, or as a SU(2) Chern-Simons theory over $S^4$. The new quantum Hall liquid supports various types of topological excitations, including the 0-brane (particles), the 2-brane (membranes) and the 4-brane. There is a topological phase interaction among the membranes which generalizes the concept of fractional statistics.

We show that the Quantum Hall Soliton constructed in \cite{giantbob} is stable under small perturbations. It has been known for some time that the AdS/CFT correspondence predicts a limit on the number of single particle states propagating on the compact spherical component of the AdS-times-sphere geometry. The limit is called the stringy exclusion principle. The physical origin of this effect has been obscure but it is usually thought of as a feature of very small distance physics. In this paper we will show that the stringy exclusion principle is due to a surprising large distance phenomenon. The massless single particle states become progressively less and less point-like as their angular momentum increases. In fact they blow up into spherical branes of increasing size. Quantum field theory on non-commutative spaces does not enjoy the usual ultraviolet-infrared decoupling that forms the basis for conventional renormalization. The high momentum contributions to loop integrations can lead to unfamiliar long distance behavior which can potentially undermine naive expectations for the IR behavior of the theory. These "anomalies" involve non-analytic behavior in the noncommutativity parameter Theta making the limit Theta goes to zero singular. In this paper we will analyze such effects in the one loop approximation to gauge theories on non-commutative space. We will see that contrary to expectations poles in Theta do occur and lead to large discrepancies between the expected and actual infrared behavior. We find that poles in Theta are absent in supersymmetric theories. The "anomalies" are generally still present, but only at the logarithmic level. There is substantial evidence that string theory on AdS_5 x S_5 is a holographic theory in which the number of degrees of freedom scales as the area of the boundary in Planck units. Precisely how the theory can describe bulk physics using only surface degrees of freedom is not well understood. A particularly paradoxical situation involves an event deep in the interior of the bulk space. The event must be recorded in the (Schroedinger Picture) state vector of the boundary theory long before a signal, such as a gravitational wave, can propagate from the event to the boundary. In a previous paper with Polchinski, we argued that the "precursor" operators which carry information stored in the wave during the time when it vanishes in a neighborhood of the boundary are necessarily non-local. In this paper we argue that the precursors cannot be products of local gauge invariant operators such as the energy momentum tensor. In fact gauge theories have a class of intrinsically non-local operators which cannot be built from local gauge invariant objects. These are the Wilson loops. We show that the precursors can be identified with Wilson loops whose spatial size is dictated by the UV-IR connection., Comment: 23 pages, no figures

The holographic connection between large $N$ Super Yang Mills theory and gravity in anti deSitter space requires unfamiliar behavior of the SYM theory in the limit that the curvature of the AdS geometry becomes small. The paradoxical behavior includes superluminal oscillations and negative energy density. These effects typically occur in the SYM description of events which take place far from the boundary of AdS when the signal from the event arrives at the boundary. The paradoxes can be resolved by assuming a very rich collection of hidden degrees of freedom of the SYM theory which store information but give rise to no local energy density. These degrees of freedom, called precursors, are needed to make possible sudden apparently acausal energy momentum flows. Such behavior would be impossible in classical field theory as a consequence of the positivity of the energy density. It is quite remarkable that seventy years after Hubble discovered the expansion of the Universe, we still have no idea in which of the three Friedmann-Robertson-Walker geometries we live. Most of the current literature has focussed on flat or open models. Here, we construct a viable model of the Universe which has closed geometry even though the nonrelativistic-matter density is less than critical. Furthermore, in this model, the cosmic microwave background could come from a causally-connected region at the antipode of the closed Universe. This model illustrates that the geometry of the Universe is unconstrained by current data. We discuss observations which may reliably determine the geometry of the Universe in the near future., Comment: 5 pages. Matter with an equation of state $p=-\rho/3$ may arise in certain scalar field theories, and the energy density of this matter decreases as $a^{-2}$ with the scale factor $a$ of the Universe. In this case, the Universe could be closed but still have a nonrelativistic-matter density $\Omega_0<1$. Furthermore, the cosmic microwave background could come from a causally-connected region at the other side of the Universe.
