1. New radio continuum study of the Large Magellanic Cloud Supernova Remnant N49

Abstract: We present new Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) radio observations toward N49, one of the brightest extragalactic Supernova remnants (SNRs) located in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Our new and archival ATCA radio observations were analysed along with $Chandra$ X-ray data. These observations show a prominent `bullet' shaped feature beyond the southwestern boundary of the SNR. Both X-ray morphology and radio polarisation analysis support a physical connection of this feature to the SNR. The 'bullet' feature's apparent velocity is estimated at $\sim$1300 km s$^{-1}$, based on its distance ($\sim$10 pc) from the remnant's geometric centre and estimated age ($\sim$7600 yrs). we estimated the radio spectral index, $\alpha= -0.55 \pm 0.03$ which is typical of middle-age SNRs. Polarisation maps created for N49 show low to moderate levels of mean fractional polarisation estimated at 7$\pm$1% and 10$\pm$1% for 5.5 and 9 GHz, respectively. These values are noticeably larger than found in previous studies. Moreover, the mean value for the Faraday rotation of SNR N49 from combining CABB data is 212$\pm$65 rad m$^{-2}$ and the maximum value of RM is 591$\pm$103 rad m$^{-2}$., Comment: 16 pages, accepted for publication in Publications of the Astronomical Society of Australia

2. Photometric and Spectroscopic study of Ten Low Mass Ratio Contact Binary Systems: Orbital Stability, O'Connell Effect and Infra-red Calcium Line Filling

Abstract: Low mass ratio contact binary systems are more likely to have unstable orbits and potentially merge. In addition, such systems exhibit characteristics such as starspots and high energy emissions (UV) suggestive of chromospheric and magnetic activity. Light curve modelling of ten contact binary systems is reported. All were found to be of extreme low mass ratio ranging from 0.122 to 0.24 and three were found to be potentially unstable and possible merger candidates. Filling of the infrared Calcium absorption lines is a marker of increased chromospheric activity. We use the available LAMOST spectra along with matched standard spectra (broadened for rotation) to measure the excess filling of the central core depression flux of the two main infrared Calcium absorption lines at 8542 and 8662 angstroms. We find that all reported contact binaries have excess filling of the core flux in the infrared Calcium lines. Three of the systems reported were also observed by the GALEX mission and we find that all three have features of excess ultraviolet emissions further adding evidence for increased chromospheric activity in low mass ratio contact binaries. Analysis of both orbital stability and absorption line filling is dependent on the determination of geometric and absolute parameters from light curve modelling. Not an insignificant number of contact binary light curves exhibit the O'Connell effect, usually attributed to starspots. 3. Optimising an Array of Cherenkov Telescopes in Australia for the Detection of TeV Gamma-Ray Transients

Abstract: As TeV gamma-ray astronomy progresses into the era of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), instantaneously following up on gamma-ray transients is becoming more important than ever. To this end, a worldwide network of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes has been proposed. Australia is ideally suited to provide coverage of part of the Southern Hemisphere sky inaccessible to H.E.S.S. in Namibia and the upcoming CTA-South in Chile. This study assesses the sources detectable by a small, transient-focused array in Australia based on CTA telescope designs. The TeV emission of extragalactic sources (including the majority of gamma-ray transients) can suffer significant absorption by the extragalactic background light. As such, we explored the improvements possible by implementing stereoscopic and topological triggers, as well as lowered image cleaning thresholds, to access lower energies. We modelled flaring gamma-ray sources based on past measurements from the satellite-based gamma-ray telescope Fermi-LAT. We estimate that an array of four Medium-Sized Telescopes (MSTs) would detect $\sim$24 active galactic nucleus flares >5$\sigma$ per year, up to a redshift of $z\approx1.5$. Two MSTs achieved $\sim$80-90% of the detections of four MSTs. The modelled Galactic transients were detectable within the observation time of one night, 11 of the 21 modelled gamma-ray bursts were detectable, as were $\sim$10% of unidentified transients. Abstract: Monochromatic gamma-ray signals constitute a potential smoking gun signature for annihilating or decaying dark matter particles that could relatively easily be distinguished from astrophysical or instrumental backgrounds. We provide an updated assessment of the sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to such signals, based on observations of the Galactic centre region as well as of selected dwarf spheroidal galaxies. We find that current limits and detection prospects for dark matter masses above 300 GeV will be significantly improved, by up to an order of magnitude in the multi-TeV range. This demonstrates that CTA will set a new standard for gamma-ray astronomy also in this respect, as the world's largest and most sensitive high-energy gamma-ray observatory, in particular due to its exquisite energy resolution at TeV energies and the adopted observational strategy focussing on regions with large dark matter densities. Throughout our analysis, we use up-to-date instrument response functions, and we thoroughly model the effect of instrumental systematic uncertainties in our statistical treatment. 5. Fast as Potoroo: Radio Continuum Detection of a Bow-Shock Pulsar Wind Nebula Powered by Pulsar J1638-4713

Abstract: We report the discovery of a bow-shock pulsar wind nebula (PWN), named Potoroo, and the detection of a young pulsar J1638-4713 that powers the nebula. We present a radio continuum study of the PWN based on 20-cm observations obtained from the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) and MeerKAT. PSR J1638-4713 was identified using Parkes radio telescope observations at frequencies above 3 GHz. The pulsar has the second-highest dispersion measure of all known radio pulsars (1553 pc/cm^3), a spin period of 65.74 ms and a spin-down luminosity of 6.1x10^36 erg/s. The PWN has a cometary morphology and one of the greatest projected lengths among all the observed pulsar radio tails, measuring over 21 pc for an assumed distance of 10 kpc. The remarkably long tail and atypically steep radio spectral index are attributed to the interplay of a supernova reverse shock and the PWN. The originating supernova remnant is not known so far. We estimated the pulsar kick velocity to be in the range of 1000-2000 km/s for ages between 23 and 10 kyr. The X-ray counterpart found in Chandra data, CXOU J163802.6-471358, shows the same tail morphology as the radio source but is shorter by a factor of 10. The peak of the X-ray emission is offset from the peak of the radio total intensity (Stokes I) emission by approximately 4.7", but coincides well with circularly polarised (Stokes V) emission. Abstract: We present new and archival Australia Telescope Compact Array and Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array data of the Small Magellanic Cloud supernova remnant 1E 0102.2-7219 at 2100, 5500, 9000, and 108000 MHz; as well as Hi data provided by the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder. The remnant shows a ring-like morphology with a mean radius of 6.2 pc. The 5500 MHz image reveals a bridge-like structure, seen for the first time in a radio image. This structure is also visible in both optical and X-ray images. In the 9000 MHz image we detect a central feature that has a flux density of 4.3 mJy but rule out a pulsar wind nebula origin, due to the lack of significant polarisation towards the central feature with an upper limit of 4 per cent. The mean fractional polarisation for 1E 0102.2-7219 is 7 +- 1 and 12 +- 2 per cent for 5500 and 9000 MHz, respectively. The spectral index for the entire remnant is -0.61 +- 0.01. We estimate the line-of-sight magnetic field strength in the direction of 1E 0102.2-7219 of ~44 microG with an equipartition field of 65 +- 5 microG. This latter model, uses the minimum energy of the sum of the magnetic field and cosmic ray electrons only. We detect an Hi cloud towards this remnant at the velocity range of ~160-180 km s-1 and a cavity-like structure at the velocity of 163.7-167.6 km s-1. We do not detect CO emission towards 1E 0102.2-7219.

Abstract: The detection of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star merger by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo (GW170817), along with the discovery of the electromagnetic counterparts of this gravitational wave event, ushered in a new era of multimessenger astronomy, providing the first direct evidence that BNS mergers are progenitors of short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Such events may also produce very-high-energy (VHE, > 100GeV) photons which have yet to be detected in coincidence with a gravitational wave signal. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a next-generation VHE observatory which aims to be indispensable in this search, with an unparalleled sensitivity and ability to slew anywhere on the sky within a few tens of seconds. New observing modes and follow-up strategies are being developed for CTA to rapidly cover localization areas of gravitational wave events that are typically larger than the CTA field of view. This work will evaluate and provide estimations on the expected number of of gravitational wave events that will be observable with CTA, considering both on- and off-axis emission. 9. Effects of Metallicity on the Instability Mass Ratio of Low Mass Contact Binary Systems

Abstract: The orbital stability of contact binary systems has been receiving considerable attention recently. Theoretical studies indicate that merger is likely to occur at very low mass ratios, but the actual mass ratio at which merger may take place is likely to be variable and dependent on the mass of the primary. We consider the effects of metal content on the orbital stability of contact binary systems by modelling the gyration radius of a rotating and tidally distorted primary component at various values of metallicity in the range -1.25 to +0.5. We determine the instability mass ratio range for contact binary systems with a low mass primary in the range 0.6M(sun) to 1.4M(sun) at various metallicity levels and show that systems with low metallicity have an instability mass ratio lower than those with higher metal content and therefore are likely to be more stable. We illustrate the effect through light curve analysis of two otherwise very similar contact binary systems, except for different metallicity. 10. Effective Temperature and the Light Curve Solution of Contact Binary Systems

Abstract: With increasing number of contact binary discoveries and the recognition that luminous red novae are the result of contact binary merger events, there has been a significant increase in the number of light curve solutions appearing in the literature. One of the key elements of such solutions is the assignment and fixing of the effective temperature of the primary component (T1). Sometimes much is made of the assigned value with expectation of significantly different light curve solutions even though theoretical considerations suggest that absolute value of T1 has little influence on the geometric elements of the light curve solution. In this study we show that assigning T1 over a range of 1000K has no significant influence on the light curve solutions of two extreme low mass ratio contact binary systems. In addition, we explore the use of photometric spectral energy distribution as a potential standard for assigning T1 in the absence of spectroscopic observations., Comment: 7 pages, 4 tables and 2 figures. Abstract: Galaxy clusters are expected to be dark matter (DM) reservoirs and storage rooms for the cosmic-ray protons (CRp) that accumulate along the cluster's formation history. Accordingly, they are excellent targets to search for signals of DM annihilation and decay at gamma-ray energies and are predicted to be sources of large-scale gamma-ray emission due to hadronic interactions in the intracluster medium. We estimate the sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to detect diffuse gamma-ray emission from the Perseus galaxy cluster. We perform a detailed spatial and spectral modelling of the expected signal for the DM and the CRp components. For each, we compute the expected CTA sensitivity. The observing strategy of Perseus is also discussed. In the absence of a diffuse signal (non-detection), CTA should constrain the CRp to thermal energy ratio within the radius $R_{500}$ down to about $X_{500}<3\times 10^{-3}$, for a spatial CRp distribution that follows the thermal gas and a CRp spectral index $\alpha_{\rm CRp}=2.3$. Under the optimistic assumption of a pure hadronic origin of the Perseus radio mini-halo and depending on the assumed magnetic field profile, CTA should measure $\alpha_{\rm CRp}$ down to about $\Delta\alpha_{\rm CRp}\simeq 0.1$ and the CRp spatial distribution with 10% precision. Regarding DM, CTA should improve the current ground-based gamma-ray DM limits from clusters observations on the velocity-averaged annihilation cross-section by a factor of up to $\sim 5$, depending on the modelling of DM halo substructure. In the case of decay of DM particles, CTA will explore a new region of the parameter space, reaching models with $\tau_{\chi}>10^{27}$s for DM masses above 1 TeV. These constraints will provide unprecedented sensitivity to the physics of both CRp acceleration and transport at cluster scale and to TeV DM particle models, especially in the decay scenario., Comment: 93 pages (including author list, appendix and references), 143 figures. We derive absolute parameters from colour and distance based calibrations and show that although both have low mass ratios they are likely to be in a stable orbit and unlikely to merge. Abstract: Multi-band (B, V and R) photometric and spectroscopic observations of six poorly studied contact binaries carried out at the Western Sydney University and Las Cumbres Observatory were analysed using a recent version of the Wilson-Devenney code. All six were found to be of extreme low mass ratio ranging from 0.073 to 0.149. All are of F spectral class with the mass of the primary component ranging from 1.05Msun to 1.48Msun. None show light curve features of enhanced choromospheric activity (O'Connell Effect) however five of the six do have significant ultraviolet excess indicating presence of increased magnetic and chromospheric activity. Period analysis based on available survey data suggests two systems have a slowly increasing period suggesting mass transfer from the secondary to the primary, two have a slow declining period with likely mass transfer from primary to the secondary while one shows a steady period and one undergoing transition from a declining to increasing period suggesting possible mass transfer reversal. We also compare light curve solutions against theoretical markers of orbital stability and show that three of six systems have mass ratios within the theoretical instability limit and maybe regarded as potential merger candidates., Comment: 10 Pages. 5 Tables. 4 Figures. Abstract: The local Cosmic Ray (CR) energy spectrum exhibits a spectral softening at energies around 3~PeV. Sources which are capable of accelerating hadrons to such energies are called hadronic PeVatrons. However, hadronic PeVatrons have not yet been firmly identified within the Galaxy. Several source classes, including Galactic Supernova Remnants (SNRs), have been proposed as PeVatron candidates. The potential to search for hadronic PeVatrons with the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is assessed. The focus is on the usage of very high energy $\gamma$-ray spectral signatures for the identification of PeVatrons. Assuming that SNRs can accelerate CRs up to knee energies, the number of Galactic SNRs which can be identified as PeVatrons with CTA is estimated within a model for the evolution of SNRs. Additionally, the potential of a follow-up observation strategy under moonlight conditions for PeVatron searches is investigated. Statistical methods for the identification of PeVatrons are introduced, and realistic Monte--Carlo simulations of the response of the CTA observatory to the emission spectra from hadronic PeVatrons are performed. Based on simulations of a simplified model for the evolution for SNRs, the detection of a $\gamma$-ray signal from in average 9 Galactic PeVatron SNRs is expected to result from the scan of the Galactic plane with CTA after 10 hours of exposure. Abstract: We have observed the z=4.3 protocluster SPT2349-56 with ATCA with the aim of detecting radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN) amongst the ~30 submillimeter galaxies identified in the structure. We detect the central complex of SMGs at 2.2\,GHz with a luminosity of L_2.2=(4.42pm0.56)x10^{25} W/Hz. The ASKAP also detects the source at 888 MHz, constraining the radio spectral index to alpha=-1.6pm0.3, consistent with ATCA non-detections at 5.5 and 9GHz, and implying L_1.4(rest)=(2.4pm0.3)x10^{26}W/Hz. This radio luminosity is about 100 times higher than expected from star formation, assuming the usual FIR-radio correlation, which is a clear indication of an AGN driven by a forming brightest cluster galaxy (BCG). None of the SMGs in SPT2349-56 show signs of AGN in any other diagnostics available to us (notably 12CO out to J=16, OH163um, CII/IR, and optical spectra), highlighting the radio continuum as a powerful probe of obscured AGN in high-z protoclusters. No other significant radio detections are found amongst the cluster members, consistent with the FIR-radio correlation. We compare these results to field samples of radio sources and SMGs, along with the 22 SPT-SMG gravitational lenses also observed in the ATCA program, as well as powerful radio galaxies at high redshifts. Our results allow us to better understand the effects of this gas-rich, overdense environment on early supermassive black hole (SMBH) growth and cluster feedback. We estimate that (3.3pm0.7)x10^{38} W of power are injected into the growing ICM by the radio-loud AGN, whose energy over 100Myr is comparable to the binding energy of the gas mass of the central halo. The AGN power is also comparable to the instantaneous energy injection from supernova feedback from the 23 catalogued SMGs in the core region of 120kpc projected radius. 18. On the True Nature of the Contact Binary CRTS J192848.7-404555

Abstract: CRTS J192848.7-404555 was recognised as a potential contact binary merger candidate on the basis of survey photometry analysis. We have carried out follow up ground based photometry of the system and show that at the recorded coordinates for the system there are two stars approximately 3 seconds of arc apart. Our analysis shows that the fainter of the two stars is the actual variable while the slightly brighter star is of fixed brightness. In addition we show that the reported survey photometry is the result of both stars being treated as a single light source with resultant erroneous light curve solution. The true nature of CRTS J192848.7-404555 shows it to be a low mass contact binary system with a high mass ratio of 0.425, high amplitude of 0.69 magnitude and shallow 24% contact. Abstract: As an emerging approach to space situational awareness and space imaging, the practical use of an event-based camera in space imaging for precise source analysis is still in its infancy. The nature of event-based space imaging and data collection needs to be further explored to develop more effective event-based space image systems and advance the capabilities of event-based tracking systems with improved target measurement models. Moreover, for event measurements to be meaningful, a framework must be investigated for event-based camera calibration to project events from pixel array coordinates in the image plane to coordinates in a target resident space object's reference frame. In this paper, the traditional techniques of conventional astronomy are reconsidered to properly utilise the event-based camera for space imaging and space situational awareness. This paper presents the techniques and systems used for calibrating an event-based camera for reliable and accurate measurement acquisition. These techniques are vital in building event-based space imaging systems capable of real-world space situational awareness tasks. By calibrating sources detected using the event-based camera, the spatio-temporal characteristics of detected sources or `event sources' can be related to the photometric characteristics of the underlying astrophysical objects. Finally, these characteristics are analysed to establish a foundation for principled processing and observing techniques which appropriately exploit the capabilities of the event-based camera.

Abstract: We present a new Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) sample of 14 radio Supernova Remnant (SNR) candidates in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). This new sample is a significant increase to the known number of older, larger and low surface brightness LMC SNRs. We employ a multi-frequency search for each object and found possible traces of optical and occasionally X-ray emission in several of these 14 SNR candidates. One of these 14 SNR candidates (MCSNR J0522-6543) has multi-frequency properties that strongly indicate a bona fide SNR. We also investigate a sample of 20 previously suggested LMC SNR candidates and confirm the SNR nature of MCSNR J0506-6815. We detect lower surface brightness SNR candidates which were likely formed by a combination of shock waves and strong stellar winds from massive progenitors (and possibly surrounding OB stars). Abstract: The study presents a simplified method to identify potential bright red nova progenitors based on the amplitude of the light curve and infrared (J-H) colour of a contact binary system. We employ published criteria for contact binary orbital instability to show that the amplitude of the light curve for a given contact system with a low mass (< 1.4Msun) primary must be less than a specified value for it to be potentially unstable. Using this we search the photometric data of a large survey to identify about 50 potential bright red nova progenitors. We analyse the survey photometry of each to determine the mass ratio and from the estimated mass of the primary other physical parameters of the systems. We show that each system has physical characteristics indicating potential orbital instability. Abstract: Abstract Background Metazoans inherited genes from unicellular ancestors that perform essential biological processes such as cell division, metabolism, and protein translation. Multicellularity requires careful control and coordination of these unicellular genes to maintain tissue integrity and homeostasis. Gene regulatory networks (GRNs) that arose during metazoan evolution are frequently altered in cancer, resulting in over-expression of unicellular genes. We propose that an imbalance in co-expression of unicellular (UC) and multicellular (MC) genes is a driving force in cancer. Results We combine gene co-expression analysis to infer changes to GRNs in cancer with protein sequence conservation data to distinguish genes with UC and MC origins. Co-expression networks created using RNA sequencing data from 31 tumor types and normal tissue samples are divided into modules enriched for UC genes, MC genes, or mixed UC-MC modules. The greatest differences between tumor and normal tissue co-expression networks occur within mixed UC-MC modules. MC and UC genes not commonly co-expressed in normal tissues form distinct co-expression modules seen only in tumors. The degree of rewiring of genes within mixed UC-MC modules increases with tumor grade and stage. Mixed UC-MC modules are enriched for somatic mutations in cancer genes, particularly amplifications, suggesting an important driver of the rewiring observed in tumors is copy number changes. Conclusions Our study shows the greatest changes to gene co-expression patterns during tumor progression occur between genes of MC and UC origins, implicating the breakdown and rewiring of metazoan gene regulatory networks in cancer development and progression.

24. Photometric Analysis of Three Potential Red Nova Progenitors

Abstract: We present photometric analysis of three bright red nova progenitor contact binary systems: ASAS J082151-0612.6, TYC 7281-269-1 and TYC 7275-1968-1. The primary components in all three systems are solar-type low mass stars with radii somewhat larger than their Zero Age Main Sequence counterparts. The secondaries, as in most contact binary systems, have radii and luminosities well above their main sequence counterparts. All three have extreme low mass ratios ranging from 0.075 to 0.097 and two have high degrees of contact, in excess of 75%. All three have mass ratios and separations below the theoretical values for orbital stability. Chromospheric activity, a hallmark of magnetic activity and magnetic braking, considered important in mediating angular momentum loss, is also explored. All three systems demonstrate the O'Connell effect, and all systems require the introduction of star spots for a better light curve solution. In addition, we show that ASAS J082151-0612.6 and TYC 7281-269-1 have a UV colour excess in the range indicating high chromospheric activity. Another measure of potential significant magnetic activity is X-Ray luminosity; TYC 7275-1968-1, and probably also TYC 7281-269-1, have X-Ray luminosity well above other contact binary systems. Abstract: We analyze the cooling and feedback properties of 48 galaxy clusters at redshifts $0.4 < z < 1.3$ selected from the South Pole Telescope (SPT) catalogs to evolve like the progenitors of massive and well-studied systems at $z{\sim}0$. We estimate the radio power at the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) location of each cluster from an analysis of Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) data. Assuming that the scaling relation between radio power and active galactic nucleus (AGN) cavity power $P_{\mathrm{cav}}$ observed at low redshift does not evolve with redshift, we use these measurements in order to estimate the expected AGN cavity power in the core of each system. We estimate the X-ray luminosity within the cooling radius $L_{\mathrm{cool}}$ of each cluster from a joint analysis of the available $Chandra$ X-ray and SPT Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) data. This allows us to characterize the redshift evolution of the $P_{\mathrm{cav}} / L_{\mathrm{cool}}$ ratio. When combined with low-redshift results, these constraints enable investigations of the properties of the feedback/cooling cycle across 9~Gyr of cluster growth. We model the redshift evolution of this ratio measured for cool core clusters by a log-normal distribution $\mathrm{Log}$-$\mathcal{N}(\alpha + \beta z, \sigma^2)$ and constrain the slope of the mean evolution $\beta = -0.05\pm 0.47$. This analysis improves the constraints on the slope of this relation by a factor of two. We find no evidence of redshift evolution of the feedback/cooling equilibrium in these clusters which suggests that the onset of radio-mode feedback took place at an early stage of cluster formation. High values of $P_{\mathrm{cav}} / L_{\mathrm{cool}}$ are found at the BCG location of non-cool core clusters which might suggest that the timescales of the AGN feedback cycle and the cool core / non-cool core transition are different., Comment: Submitted to The Astrophysical Journal

Abstract: Young massive stellar clusters are extreme environments and potentially provide the means for efficient particle acceleration. Indeed, they are increasingly considered as being responsible for a significant fraction of cosmic rays (CRs) accelerated within the Milky Way. Westerlund 1, the most massive known young stellar cluster in our Galaxy is a prime candidate for studying this hypothesis. While the very-high-energy $\gamma$-ray source HESS J1646-458 has been detected in the vicinity of Westerlund 1 in the past, its association could not be firmly identified. We aim to identify the physical processes responsible for the $\gamma$-ray emission around Westerlund 1 and thus to better understand the role of massive stellar clusters in the acceleration of Galactic CRs. Using 164 hours of data recorded with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.), we carried out a deep spectromorphological study of the $\gamma$-ray emission of HESS J1646-458. We furthermore employed H I and CO observations of the region to infer the presence of gas that could serve as target material for interactions of accelerated CRs. We detected large-scale ($\sim 2^\circ$ diameter) $\gamma$-ray emission with a complex morphology, exhibiting a shell-like structure and showing no significant variation with $\gamma$-ray energy. The combined energy spectrum of the emission extends to several tens of TeV, and is uniform across the entire source region. We did not find a clear correlation of the $\gamma$-ray emission with gas clouds as identified through H I and CO observations. We conclude that, of the known objects within the region, only Westerlund 1 can explain the bulk of the $\gamma$-ray emission. Abstract: We investigate a possible depiction of the famous SN 1054 event in specially minted coins produced in the Eastern Roman Empire in 1054 A.D. On these coins, we investigate if the head of the Emperor, Constantine IX, might represent the Sun with a bright 'star' on either side - Venus in the east and SN 1054 in the west, perhaps also representing the newly split Christian churches. We explore the idea that the eastern star represents the stable and well-known Venus and the Eastern Orthodox Church, while the western star represents the short-lived 'new star' and the 'fading' Western Catholic church. We examined 36 coins of this rare Constantine IX Class IV batch. While no exact date could be associated to any of these coins, they most likely were minted during the last six months of Constantine IX's rule in 1054. We hypothesise that the stance of the church concerning the order of the Universe, as well as the chaos surrounding the Great Schism, played a crucial role in stopping the official reporting of an obvious event in the sky, yet a dangerous omen. 28. Analysis of Dual Band and Survey Photometry of Two Low Mass Ratio Contact Binary Systems

Abstract: The study presents photometric analysis of the completely eclipsing contact binary systems TYC 8351-1081-1 and ASAS J210406-0522.3. TYC 8351-1081-1 is an extremely low mass ratio (q=0.086) system with high degree of contact (f=0.66) while ASAS J210406-0522.3 is found to be in marginal contact (f=0.08) with a relatively low mass ratio of 0.272. There is good thermal contact in both systems with only a small difference in the temperature of the components. The systems have been observed by a number sky surveys over the past 20 years. We compare the light curve solutions from up to three of these surveys and find that survey photometric data manually analysed is robust and yields results comparable to dedicated ground based photometry. There is evidence of significant luminosity transfer from the primary to the secondary, on the order of 0.5LJ for TYC 8351-1081-1 and 0.06LJ for ASAS J210406-0522.3. There appears to be no change in period of either system over the past 20 years and theoretical angular momentum loss is below current measurement threshold in both cases. We also show that the mass ratio and separation are well above the theoretical values for orbital instability in both cases. Abstract: We report the discovery of J0624-6948, a low-surface brightness radio ring, lying between the Galactic Plane and the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). It was first detected at 888 MHz with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP), and with a diameter of ~196 arcsec. This source has phenomenological similarities to Odd Radio Circles (ORCs). Significant differences to the known ORCs - a flatter radio spectral index, the lack of a prominent central galaxy as a possible host, and larger apparent size - suggest that J0624-6948 may be a different type of object. We argue that the most plausible explanation for J0624-6948 is an intergalactic supernova remnant due to a star that resided in the LMC outskirts that had undergone a single-degenerate type Ia supernova, and we are seeing its remnant expand into a rarefied, intergalactic environment. We also examine if a massive star or a white dwarf binary ejected from either galaxy could be the supernova progenitor. Abstract: Knowledge of platform ecology is necessary to best inform decommissioning practice. Remotely operated vehicle (ROV) video is often collected during standard industry operations and may provide insight into the marine life associating with offshore platforms, however, the utility of this video for ecological assessments remains unclear. Archival ROV video surveys at the Wandoo oil platforms on Australia’s North West Shelf was evaluated for its utility, with only 4.9% of imagery usable for standardised ecological studies. Based on the subset of usable ROV video, the influence of depth and structural complexity on attributes of the fish assemblage on the Wandoo oil platforms was examined. Vertical ROV transects on three vertical shafts on the Wandoo platforms were stratified into 10 m depth strata from 0 to 50 m, with 111 fish taxa from 25 families identified and counted across all depth strata. At both platforms, taxonomic richness and abundance was significantly highest in shallow regions and declined with depth. Abstract: We present a comprehensive multi-frequency catalogue of radio sources behind the Large Magellanic Cloud between 0.2 and 20 GHz, gathered from a combination of new and legacy radio continuum surveys. This catalogue covers an area of $\sim$144~deg$^2$ at angular resolutions from 45 arcsec to $\sim$3 arcmin. We find 6434 discrete radio sources in total, of which 3789 are detected at two or more radio frequencies. We estimate the median spectral index ($\alpha$; where $S_{v}\sim\nu^\alpha$) of $\alpha = -0.89 $ and mean of $-0.88 \pm 0.48$ for 3636 sources detected exclusively at two frequencies (0.843 and 1.384 GHz) with similar resolution (FWHM $\sim$40-45 arcsec). The large frequency range of the surveys makes it an effective tool to investigate Gigahertz Peak Spectrum (GPS), Compact Steep Spectrum (CSS) and Infrared Faint Radio sources populations within our sample. We find 10 GPS candidates with peak frequencies near 5 GHz, from which we estimate their linear size. 1866 sources from our catalogue are (CSS) candidates with $\alpha <-0.8$. We found six candidates for High Frequency Peaker (HFP) sources, whose radio fluxes peak above 5 GHz and no sources with unconstrained peaks and $\alpha~>0.5$. We found optical counterparts for 343 of the radio continuum sources, of which 128have a redshift measurement. 34. Photometric analysis of two extreme low mass ratio contact binary systems

Abstract: Multi band photometry and light curve analysis for two newly recognized contact binary systems, TYC 6995-813-1 and NSVS 13602901 are presented. Both were found to be of extreme low mass ratios 0.11 and 0.17, respectively. The secondary components of both systems show evidence of considerable evolution with elevated densities as well as both luminosity and radii well above their main sequence counterparts. Even in the absence of significant spot activity at least one of the systems, TYC 6995-813-1, shows features of magnetic and chromospheric activity. TYC 6995-813-1 is also determined to be a potential merger candidate with its current separation near the theoretical instability separation., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

Abstract: In a previous work, we establish that the acclaimed 'Arabic' records of SN 1054 from ibn Butlan originate from Europe. Also, we reconstructed the European sky at the time of the event and find that the 'new star' (SN 1054) was in the west while the planet Venus was on the opposite side of the sky (in the east) with the Sun sited directly between these two equally bright objects, as documented in East-Asian records. Here, we investigate the engravings on tombstones (ste\'cci) from several necropolises in present-day Bosnia and Herzegovina (far from the influence of the Church) as a possible European 'record' of SN 1054. Abstract: We investigate possible reasons for the absence of historical records of the supernova of 1054 in Europe. At the same time, we search for the new evidences as well. We establish that the previously acclaimed 'Arabic' records from ibn Butlan originate from Europe. As one of the most prominent scientists of the era, he was in Constantinople at the time of the supernova and actively participated in the medieval Church feud known as the Great Schism. 38. ZZ Piscis Austrinus (ZZ PsA): A bright red nova progenitor and the instability mass ratio of contact binary stars

Abstract: ZZ PsA is a neglected bright southern contact binary system with maximum V magnitude of 9.26. We present the first multi-band photometric analysis and find the system to be in deep contact (>95%) with an extremely low mass ratio of 0.078. The primary has a mass of 1.213 M? in keeping with its reported spectral class of F6. In order to determine if ZZ PsA is a merger candidate we outline the current status regarding the instability mass ratio and develop new relationship linking the mass of the primary to the instability mass ratio of the system and the degree of contact. We find that ZZ PsA along with two other examples from the literature to be merger candidates while an additional three require further observations to be confirmed as potential merger candidates., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures Accepted MNRAS

Abstract: The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), the new-generation ground-based observatory for $\gamma$-ray astronomy, provides unique capabilities to address significant open questions in astrophysics, cosmology, and fundamental physics. We study some of the salient areas of $\gamma$-ray cosmology that can be explored as part of the Key Science Projects of CTA, through simulated observations of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and of their relativistic jets. Observations of AGN with CTA will enable a measurement of $\gamma$-ray absorption on the extragalactic background light with a statistical uncertainty below 15% up to a redshift $z=2$ and to constrain or detect $\gamma$-ray halos up to intergalactic-magnetic-field strengths of at least 0.3pG. Extragalactic observations with CTA also show promising potential to probe physics beyond the Standard Model. The best limits on Lorentz invariance violation from $\gamma$-ray astronomy will be improved by a factor of at least two to three. CTA will also probe the parameter space in which axion-like particles could constitute a significant fraction, if not all, of dark matter. We conclude on the synergies between CTA and other upcoming facilities that will foster the growth of $\gamma$-ray cosmology., Comment: 71 pages (including affiliations and references), 13 figures, 6 tables. Abstract: We provide an updated assessment of the power of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to search for thermally produced dark matter at the TeV scale, via the associated gamma-ray signal from pair-annihilating dark matter particles in the region around the Galactic centre. We find that CTA will open a new window of discovery potential, significantly extending the range of robustly testable models given a standard cuspy profile of the dark matter density distribution. Importantly, even for a cored profile, the projected sensitivity of CTA will be sufficient to probe various well-motivated models of thermally produced dark matter at the TeV scale. This is due to CTA's unprecedented sensitivity, angular and energy resolutions, and the planned observational strategy. The survey of the inner Galaxy will cover a much larger region than corresponding previous observational campaigns with imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. CTA will map with unprecedented precision the large-scale diffuse emission in high-energy gamma rays, constituting a background for dark matter searches for which we adopt state-of-the-art models based on current data. Throughout our analysis, we use up-to-date event reconstruction Monte Carlo tools developed by the CTA consortium, and pay special attention to quantifying the level of instrumental systematic uncertainties, as well as background template systematic errors, required to probe thermally produced dark matter at these energies. Abstract: Introduction Maternal obesity increases the risk of multiple maternal and infant pregnancy complications, such as gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia. Current UK guidelines use body mass index (BMI) to identify which women require additional care due to increased risk of complications. However, BMI may not accurately predict which women will develop complications during pregnancy as it does not determine amount and distribution of adipose tissue. Some adiposity measures (eg, waist circumference, ultrasound measures of abdominal visceral fat) can better identify where body fat is stored, which may be useful in predicting those women who need additional care.Methods and analysis This prospective cohort study (SHAPES, Study of How Adiposity in Pregnancy has an Effect on outcomeS) aims to evaluate the prognostic performance of adiposity measures (either alone or in combination with other adiposity, sociodemographic or clinical measures) to estimate risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. Pregnant women (n=1400) will be recruited at their first trimester ultrasound scan (11+2–14+1 weeks’) at Newcastle upon Tyne National Health Service Foundation Trust, UK. Early pregnancy adiposity measures and clinical and sociodemographic data will be collected. Routine data on maternal and infant pregnancy outcomes will be collected from routine hospital records. Regression methods will be used to compare the different adiposity measures with BMI in terms of their ability to predict pregnancy complications. If no individual measure performs better than BMI, multivariable models will be developed and evaluated to identify the most parsimonious model. The apparent performance of the developed model will be summarised using calibration, discrimination and internal validation analyses.Ethics and dissemination Ethical favourable opinion has been obtained from the North East: Newcastle & North Tyneside 1 Research Ethics Committee (REC reference: 22/NE/0035). Abstract: We present two new radio continuum images from the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) survey in the direction of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). These images are part of the Evolutionary Map of the Universe (EMU) Early Science Project (ESP) survey of the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds. The two new source lists produced from these images contain radio continuum sources observed at 960 MHz (4489 sources) and 1320 MHz (5954 sources) with a bandwidth of 192 MHz and beam sizes of 30.0"x30.0" and 16.3"x15.1", respectively. The median Root Mean Squared (RMS) noise values are 186$\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$ (960 MHz) and 165$\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$ (1320 MHz). To create point source catalogues, we use these two source lists, together with the previously published Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope (MOST) and the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) point source catalogues to estimate spectral indices for the whole population of radio point sources found in the survey region. Combining our ASKAP catalogues with these radio continuum surveys, we found 7736 point-like sources in common over an area of 30 deg$^2$. In addition, we report the detection of two new, low surface brightness supernova remnant candidates in the SMC. The high sensitivity of the new ASKAP ESP survey also enabled us to detect the bright end of the SMC planetary nebula sample, with 22 out of 102 optically known planetary nebulae showing point-like radio continuum emission. Abstract: RX J0046.5$-$7308 is a shell-type supernova remnant (SNR) in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We carried out new $^{12}$CO($J$ = 1-0, 3-2) observations toward the SNR using Mopra and the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment. We found eight molecular clouds (A-H) along the X-ray shell of the SNR. The typical cloud size and mass are $\sim$10-15 pc and $\sim$1000-3000 $M_{\odot}$, respectively. The X-ray shell is slightly deformed and has the brightest peak in the southwestern shell where two molecular clouds A and B are located. The four molecular clouds A, B, F, and G have high intensity ratios of $^{12}$CO($J$ = 3-2) / $^{12}$CO($J$ = 1-0) $> 1.2$, which are not attributable to any identified internal infrared sources or high-mass stars. The HI cavity and its expanding motion are found toward the SNR, which are likely created by strong stellar winds from a massive progenitor. We suggest that the molecular clouds A-D, F, and G and HI clouds within the wind-blown cavity at $V_\mathrm{LSR} = 117.1$-122.5 km s$^{-1}$ are to be associated with the SNR. The X-ray spectroscopy reveals the dynamical age of $26000^{+1000}_{-2000}$ yr and the progenitor mass of $\gtrsim 30$ $M_{\odot}$, which is also consistent with the proposed scenario. We determine physical conditions of the giant molecular cloud LIRS 36A using the large velocity gradient analysis with archival datasets of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array; the kinematic temperature is $72^{+50}_{-37}$ K and the number density of molecular hydrogen is $1500^{+600}_{-300}$ cm$^{-3}$. Abstract: The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the major next-generation observatory for ground-based very-high-energy gamma-ray astronomy. It will improve the sensitivity of current ground-based instruments by a factor of five to twenty, depending on the energy, greatly improving both their angular and energy resolutions over four decades in energy (from 20 GeV to 300 TeV). This achievement will be possible by using tens of imaging Cherenkov telescopes of three successive sizes. They will be arranged into two arrays, one per hemisphere, located on the La Palma island (Spain) and in Paranal (Chile). Abstract: We report the discovery of a new Small Magellanic Cloud Pulsar Wind Nebula (PWN) at the edge of the Supernova Remnant (SNR)-DEM S5. The pulsar powered object has a cometary morphology similar to the Galactic PWN analogs PSR B1951+32 and 'the mouse'. It is travelling supersonically through the interstellar medium. We estimate the Pulsar kick velocity to be in the range of 700-2000 km/s for an age between 28-10 kyr. The radio spectral index for this SNR PWN pulsar system is flat (-0.29 $\pm$ 0.01) consistent with other similar objects. We infer that the putative pulsar has a radio spectral index of -1.8, which is typical for Galactic pulsars. We searched for dispersion measures (DMs) up to 1000 cm/pc^3 but found no convincing candidates with a S/N greater than 8. We produce a polarisation map for this PWN at 5500 MHz and find a mean fractional polarisation of P $\sim 23$ percent. The X-ray power-law spectrum (Gamma $\sim 2$) is indicative of non-thermal synchrotron emission as is expected from PWN-pulsar system. Finally, we detect DEM S5 in Infrared (IR) bands. Our IR photometric measurements strongly indicate the presence of shocked gas which is expected for SNRs. However, it is unusual to detect such IR emission in a SNR with a supersonic bow-shock PWN. We also find a low-velocity HI cloud of $\sim 107$ km/s which is possibly interacting with DEM S5. SNR DEM S5 is the first confirmed detection of a pulsar-powered bow shock nebula found outside the Galaxy., Comment: 20 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract: We present observations of fifty square degrees of the Mopra carbon monoxide (CO) survey of the Southern Galactic Plane, covering Galactic longitudes $l = 300$-$350^\circ$ and latitudes $|b| \le 0.5^\circ$. These data have been taken at 0.6 arcminute spatial resolution and 0.1 km/s spectral resolution, providing an unprecedented view of the molecular clouds and gas of the Southern Galactic Plane in the 109-115 GHz $J = 1$-0 transitions of $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, C$^{18}$O and C$^{17}$O. We present a series of velocity-integrated maps, spectra and position-velocity plots that illustrate Galactic arm structures and trace masses on the order of $\sim$10$^{6}$ M$_{\odot}$ per square degree; and include a preliminary catalogue of C$^{18}$O clumps located between $l=330$-$340^\circ$. Abstract: With an increasing number of contact binary discoveries and the recognition that luminous red novae are the result of contact binary merger events, there has been a significant increase in the number of light curve solutions appearing in the literature. One key element of such solutions is assigning and fixing the effective temperature of the primary component (T1). Sometimes the expectation that the assigned temperature will significantly alter light curve solution is exaggerated even though theoretical considerations suggest that the absolute value of T1 has little influence on the geometric elements of the light curve solution. In this study, we show that assigning T1 over a range of 1000 K has no significant influence on the light curve solutions of two extreme low mass ratio contact binary systems. In addition, we explore the use of photometric spectral energy distribution as a potential standard for assigning T1 in the absence of spectroscopic observations.
