Background Hemoglobin A1c(HbA1c) is widely used to measure glycemic status and control in diabetes testing and treatment and is an important risk factor forcomplications of diabetes. Hemoglobin variants can interfere with the HbA1c testing method by reducing the life span of erythrocytes or due to differences in glycation degrees. In this study, glycation levels of the HbA, HbG-Coushatta, and HbG-Taipei β-chains (βA, βG-Coushatta, and βG-Taipei, respectively) were examined. Methods Blood samples from heterozygotic patients (HbG-Coushatta/HbA, HbG-Taipei/HbA) were analyzed. Glycation rateswere determined using high-performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry. Ratios of glycated βG-Coushatta to glycated βA and glycated βG-Taipei to glycated βA were calculated by comparingareas under the curves from extracted ion chromatograms. Results βG-Coushatta and βG-Taipei were 6.08 ± 1.38% and 5.95 ± 0.93% glycated (respectively), which were significantly higher than βA chains(4.55 ± 1.30% and 4.51 ± 0.91%, respectively; p = 0.000). The total glycation degree (α + β) in HbG-Coushatta and HbG-Taipei heterozygotes were estimated to be 9% and 8% higher than those of HbA homozygotes (P＜0.001), respectively. Conclusion βG-Coushatta and βG-Taipei glycation degrees were significantly higher than βA, while the differences in total hemoglobin (α + β) were small and unlikely to impact the clinical interpretation of HbA1c results.

HemoCue® point-of care devices are widely used in Bordeaux university hospital center to assess hemoglobin in critical situations, with 45 devices in 13 health units. Based on our experience, we here propose essential steps in order to prepare the accreditation file. We develop risks analysis, mandatory validation method check points, and caregiver professional training. Among the tasks, precise reference quality instructions i.e. instruction for use, maintenance and troubleshooting should be available. We also share reflections to offer solutions to encountered difficulties. The implemented quality management must rely on a solid and involved laboratory organization. A strong caregiver membership also appears to be the key to move forward.

Malczewska-Lenczowska, J, Orysiak, J, Majorczyk, E, Sitkowski, D, Starczewski, M, and Żmijewski, P. HIF-1α and NFIA-AS2 polymorphisms as potential determinants of total hemoglobin mass in endurance athletes. J Strength Cond Res 36(6): 1596-1604, 2022-The aims of this study were to examine (1) the genotype distribution of rs11549465:CT of the HIF-1α gene and rs1572312:CA of the NFIA-AS2 gene; (2) the association between the genes and hematological status in endurance-oriented athletes; and (3) the association between the NFIA-AS2 gene and aerobic capacity in cyclists. Two hundred thirty-eight well-trained athletes (female n = 90, male n = 148) participated in the study. Total hemoglobin mass (tHbmass), blood morphology, intravascular volumes, i.e., erythrocyte volume (EV), blood volume (BV) and plasma volume (PV), and aerobic capacity indices, e.g., peak oxygen uptake (V̇o2peak), and power at anaerobic threshold (PAT) were determined. In both studied genes, the CC genotype was predominant. In the HIF-1α gene, there were no differences in genotype and allele distribution among athletes from different disciplines and between sexes. The distribution of genotypes and alleles of the NFIA-AS2 gene differed significantly in male athletes; the frequency of A allele carriers (CA + AA) was significantly higher in cyclists than in rowers and middle- and long-distance runners. The athletes with CC genotype of NF1A-AS2 had significantly higher relative values of: tHbmass (total female athletes, cyclists), PV, BV (cyclists), and EV (total male athletes, cyclists) and PAT (cyclists) than A allele carriers (CA + AA genotypes). In conclusion, our study indicates that NFIA-AS2 rs1572312:CA polymorphism was associated with hematological status in endurance athletes, as well as aerobic capacity indices in male cyclists. It suggests that this polymorphism may be a determinant of quantity of hemoglobin and intrtavascular volumes, which in turn can have an impact on aerobic performance.

Hb Winnipeg [α75(EF4)Asp→Tyr (α2); HBA2: c.226G>T (or HBA1)] is a stable α-globin chain variant described in a few articles. The majority of reported cases in older articles were clustered in Canada. It can occur on both α1- and α2-globin genes and in different populations. In this study, eight cases of Hb Winnipeg were characterized by DNA sequencing during a wide-spectrum study of suspected α-globin gene variants collected in the United Kingdom. All cases detected peaked in the S window between 4.4 and 4.54 min. on high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The isoelectric focusing (IEF) averaged at 6.21 below Hb A. All the mutations were detected on the α1-globin gene except in one case. The ethnic origin of the majority of the patients was Canadian. Only one case was associated with the common polymorphism HBA2: c.-24C>G (or HBA1) [Cap +14 (C>G)] on both α-globin genes without any apparent effect on the variant expression. All cases were detected in a heterozygous state. Hb Winnipeg expression was consistently lower than the theoretical value for α chain variants, ranging between 11.8 and 15.8% of total hemoglobin (Hb). This study gave more details about Hb Winnipeg that may help in presumptive diagnosis, especially in routine laboratories.

The present study investigated whether athletes can be classified as responders or non-responders based on their individual change in total hemoglobin mass (tHb-mass) following altitude training while also identifying the potential factors that may affect responsiveness to altitude exposure. Measurements were completed with 59 elite endurance athletes who participated in national team altitude training camps. Fifteen athletes participated in the altitude training camp at least twice. Total Hb-mass using a CO rebreathing method and other blood markers were measured before and after a total of 82 altitude training camps (1350-2500 m) in 59 athletes. In 46 (56%) altitude training camps, tHb-mass increased. The amount of positive responses increased to 65% when only camps above 2000 m were considered. From the fifteen athletes who participated in altitude training camps at least twice, 27% always had positive tHb-mass responses, 13% only negative responses, and 60% both positive and negative responses. Logistic regression analysis showed that altitude was the most significant factor explaining positive tHb-mass response. Furthermore, male athletes had greater tHb-mass response than female athletes. In endurance athletes, tHb-mass is likely to increase after altitude training given that hypoxic stimulus is appropriate. However, great inter- and intra-individual variability in tHb-mass response does not support classification of an athlete permanently as a responder or non-responder. This variability warrants efforts to control numerous factors affecting an athlete's response to each altitude training camp.

We measured the regional saturation of oxygen of hemoglobin (rSO2) and the total hemoglobin index (HbI) in the brain and skeletal muscles of a conscious Harris’s Hawk by a near-infrared spectroscopy device (NIRS). The oxygenation levels of the breast were significantly lower than the cerebral parts. A flight exercise significantly increased the rSO2 and HbI of the breast. The breast surface temperature significantly increased in response to flight training by a thermography. NIRS enabled us to measure changes in the oxygenation levels of brain and skeletal muscles in a conscious Harris’s Hawk before and after a moving task.

Background/objectives The thermogenic function of brown adipose tissue (BAT) is generally activated in winter and tightly regulated through various metabolic processes. However, the mechanisms mediating these changes have not been elucidated in humans. Here, we investigated the relationships between BAT density (BAT-d) and lipid metabolites in plasma from men and women in the winter and summer. Subjects/methods In total, 92 plasma samples were obtained from 23 men and 23 women, aged 21–55 years, on two different occasions (summer and winter). Lipid metabolites were comprehensively quantified using liquid chromatography-time-of-flight-mass spectrometry. BAT-d was evaluated by measuring total hemoglobin concentrations in the supraclavicular region using near-infrared time-resolved spectroscopy. Anthropometric parameters, such as the percentage of whole body fat and visceral fat area (VFA), were evaluated. Factors influencing BAT-d were investigated by univariate and multivariate regression analyses. Results A variety of metabolite peaks, such as glycerophospholipids (168 peaks), steroids and derivatives (78 peaks), fatty acyls (62 peaks), and glycerolipids (31 peaks), were detected. Univariate regression analysis, corrected by false discovery rate to yield Q values, revealed significant correlations in BAT-d and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE(46:2), r = 0.62, Q = 4.9 × 10−2) in the summer, androgens (r = 0.75, Q = 7.0 × 10−3) in the winter, and diacylglycerol (DG(36:1), r = −0.68, Q = 4.9 × 10−2) in the summer in men, but not in women. Multivariate regression analysis in the winter revealed a significant correlation between BAT-d and plasma androgens (P = 5.3 × 10−5) in men and between BAT-d and VFA (P = 2.2 × 10−3) in women. Conclusions Certain lipids in plasma showed unique correlations with BAT-d depending on sex and season. BAT-d showed a specific correlation with plasma androgens in men in the winter.

Background & objectives: Glycated hemoglobin level (HbA1c) is widely used for the diagnosis, prognosis and monitoring of therapy in diabetes mellitus patients. The hemoglobin molecule is a part of the non- enzymatic glycation reaction, so it is assumed that the total hemoglobin concentration may have an effect on the HbA1c value along with blood glucose concentrations. Hence this study was done to evaluate the effect of total hemoglobin level on HbA1c value in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients and to find out whether reduced total hemoglobin level is reflected on the HbA1c level giving an erroneous impression on the glycaemic status of the patient. Methods: 100 diagnosed Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus patients were evaluated for their Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS), Total Hemoglobin level and HbA1c level and assessed for any effect of reduced total hemoglobin level on the HbA1c value. Results: It was observed that HbA1c value correlated significantly only with FBS level and total Hemoglobin level was not found to have any effect on the HbA1c value in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus patients. Interpretation : The factor significantly affecting the HbA1c value is Fasting Blood Sugar level. Hemoglobin level doesn’t seem to be affecting the HbA1c indicating that Hemoglobin is not a significant predictor of HbA1c. Conclusions: This study documented a significant positive relationship between FBS and HbA1c level only. No correlation was found between total Hemoglobin level and HbA1c.Patients with mild to moderate anemia still revealed a high HbA1c value correlating only with the blood sugar status. Objective: Venous leg ulcers (VLUs) comprise 80% of leg ulcers. One of the key parameters that can promote healing of VLUs is tissue oxygenation. To date, clinicians have employed visual inspection of the wound site to determine the healing progression of a wound. Clinicians measure the wound size and check for epithelialization. Imaging for tissue oxygenation changes surrounding the wounds can objectively complement the subjective visual inspection approach. Herein, a handheld noncontact near-infrared optical scanner (NIROS) was developed to measure tissue oxygenation of VLUs during weeks of treatment. Approach: Continuous-wave-based diffuse reflectance measurements were processed using Modified Beer-Lambert's law to obtain changes in tissue oxygenation (in terms of oxy-, deoxy-, total hemoglobin, and oxygen saturation). The tissue oxygenation contrast obtained between the wound and surrounding tissue was longitudinally mapped across weeks of treatment of four VLUs (healing and nonhealing cases). Results: It was observed that wound to background tissue oxygenation contrasts in healing wounds diminished and/or stabilized, whereas in the nonhealing wounds it did not. In addition, in a very slow-healing wound, wound to background tissue oxygenation contrasts fluctuated and did not converge. Innovation: Near-infrared imaging of wounds to assess healing or nonhealing of VLUs from tissue oxygenation changes using a noncontact, handheld, and low-cost imager has been demonstrated for the first time. Conclusion: The tissue oxygenation changes in wound with respect to the surrounding tissue can provide an objective subclinical physiological assessment of VLUs during their treatment, along with the gold-standard visual clinical assessment.

We propose a red, green, blue (RGB)-based oximetry to assess the ocular fundus and determine its oxygen saturation (SO2) and hemoglobin concentration. The oxygenated hemoglobin concentration, deoxygenated hemoglobin concentration, and SO2 were estimated employing a method that combines Monte Carlo simulation of light transport in the fundus tissue with a multiple regression analysis. In this study, a single-layer model of the ocular fundus was employed for the Monte Carlo simulation. We constructed an experimental apparatus for measuring the fundus of a rat's eye using an RGB detector and investigated the physiological response that occurs upon a change in the fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2). The resultant images of oxygenated hemoglobin concentration, deoxygenated hemoglobin concentration, total hemoglobin concentration, and SO2 indicated that the response was caused by the defective oxygenation of the blood. The results of the present study indicate the possibility of oximetry based on the RGB images of a fundus.

Background It is not clear if there is a inaccurate effect of obesity and pneumoperitoneum on non-invasive monitoring parameters Objectives To determine the effects of CO2 pneumoperitoneum and desufflation on non-invasive monitoring variables between obese and non-obese patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery. Methods Sixty patients were included in the study who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy between February 2019-November 2019. After anesthesia induction, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, heart rate(HR), operation and pneumoperitoneum durations, PVI and SpHg data were recorded. Results The patients were divided into two groups. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of chronic diseases, operation and pneumoperitoneum durations. Statistically no significant difference was found between the groups for PVI and SpHb values. In comparison of PVI measurement values according to T0, a significant difference was found in T3,T4 and T5 in Group 2 compared to T0 (p=0.010;0.012;0.041). In comparison of SpHb measurement values according to T0, a statistically significant difference was found in T1,T2 and T3 in Group 2 compared to T0 (p=0.008;0.010;0.037). In comparison to T5, there was a significant difference in T1,T2 and T3 in Group 2 (p=0.023;0.005;0.006). Conclusion In obese people, pneumoperitonium can lead to inaccuracies in monitoring PVI and SpHb. Although these two parameters are very valuable in intraoperative follow-up, they should be used carefully during laparoscopic procedures in obese patients. If these parameters (PVI and SpHb) are considered to be used in bariatric surgeries, this information should be considered.

This study examined the relationship between plasma amino acid (AA) concentrations, including branched-chain AAs, and brown adipose tissue density (BAT-d). One hundred and seventy-three subjects (69 men, 104 women) aged 22–68 years were recruited during the winter season. AAs were comprehensively quantified using liquid chromatography-time-of-flight-mass spectrometry. The total hemoglobin concentration in the supraclavicular region ([total-Hb]sup), an indicator of BAT-d, was assessed using near-infrared time-resolved spectroscopy. Anthropometric parameters, including age, percentage of body fat, and visceral fat, were evaluated. Factors associated with higher (≥74 µM) or lower (r = 0.73, p = 0.015) and women (r = 0.58, p = 0.079) and for men (r = 0.82, p = 0.0070) and women (r = 0.70, p = 0.020), respectively. A combination of anthropometric parameters and plasma AA concentrations could be a reliable biomarker for higher and lower BAT-d.

The hematological module of the Athlete Biological Passport (ABP) is used in elite sport for antidoping purposes. Its aim is to better target athletes for testing and to indirectly detect blood doping. The ABP allows to monitor hematological variations in athletes using selected primary blood biomarkers (hemoglobin concentration ([Hb] and reticulocyte percentage (Ret%)) with an adaptive Bayesian model to set individual upper and lower limits. If values fall without the individual limits, an athlete may be further targeted and ultimately sanctioned.Since [Hb] and Ret% vary with plasma volume (PV) fluctuations, possibly caused by training load changes, we investigated the putative influence of acute and chronic training load changes on the ABP variables.Monthly blood samples were collected over one year in 10 elite cyclists (25.6 ± 3.4 yrs, 181 ± 4 cm, 71.3 ± 4.9 kg, 6.7 ± 0.8 W.kg-1 5-min maximal power output) to calculate individual ABP profiles and monitor hematological variables. Total hemoglobin mass (Hbmass) and PV were additionally measured by carbon monoxide rebreathing. Acute and chronic training loads – respectively 5 and 42 days before sampling – were calculated considering duration and intensity (training stress score, TSS™).[Hb] averaged 14.2 ± 0.0 (mean ± SD) g.dL-1 (range: 13.3 to 15.5 g·dl-1) over the study with significant changes over time (P = 0.004). Hbmass was 1’030 ± 87 g (range: 842 to 1116 g) with no significant variations over time (P = 0.118), whereas PV was 4309 ± 350 mL (range: 3688 to 4751 mL) with a time-effect observed over the study time (P = 0.014). Higher acute – but not chronic – training loads were associated with significantly decreased [Hb] (P Our results support that acute training load variations significantly affect [Hb], likely due to short-term PV fluctuations, underlining the importance of considering training load when interpreting individual ABP variations for anti-doping purposes.

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS)is a brain-imaging technology used to reveal brain activity by measuring blood oxygenation. Using fNIRS we measured activity in the left prefrontal lobe of 8–14 month-old infants as they crawled or were pushed in a stroller and as they were given a passive attention task or an active executive function (EF) task. For each task, we measured peak total hemoglobin concentration and peak Oxy relative to baseline. Results revealed differences in peak Oxy levels for crawling vs. strolling and between the EF and passive cognitive tasks, with total hemoglobin greater for the EF task than the passive attention task. These results support the theoretical view that both active locomotion and EF engage the prefrontal cortex (PFC) during early development.

Even though vascularization is recognized as an important factor in bone healing, there are limitations in terms of assessing vascularization in both preclinical and clinical scenarios. Diffuse optics have a potential to fill this gap by providing deep-tissue, non-invasive, longitudinal monitoring of total hemoglobin concentration, blood oxygen saturation and blood flow. Using rodent models with bone grafts or bone fractures, we will demonstrate the potential to build a prediction model for bone treatment efficacy assessment. In addition, the construction of a multi-modal diffuse optical imager to detect nonunion and monitor treatment in foot fractures will be introduced. Validation studies to compare diffuse optics with gold standard methods will be presented.

Brown adipose tissue (BAT) is negatively correlates with adiposity in adult humans. Near-infrared time-resolved spectroscopy has been used to noninvasively measure the density of BAT (BAT-d). We examined the relationship between body adiposity and total hemoglobin concentration in the supraclavicular region ([total-Hb]sup), that is a parameter for BAT-d, in healthy children (113 boys and 127 girls, aged 1 month to 5 years). Age and [total-Hb]sup were significant predictors of the Kaup index and subcutaneous adipose tissue thickness. BAT-d, determined by [total-Hb]sup, was negatively associated with body adiposity in infants, which is in line with the result found in adults.

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between brown adipose tissue density (BAT-d) and muscle strength, one of the major parameters relating to physical fitness. The total hemoglobin concentration ([Total-Hb]) , an index of BAT-d in the supraclavicular region using near-infrared time-resolved spectroscopy, handgrip strength, and leg-extension strength were measured in winter in healthy adults (n = 27). BAT-d was not correlated with handgrip strength (r = 0.18, p = 0.37), but with 1-RM leg extension (r = 0.41, p < 0.05). A higher leg muscle strength was associated with a higher BAT-d.

Oxygen is a vital component in wound healing; however, microvascular dysfunction can impact the wound healing process by restricting the flow of oxygen to the site. Patients afflicted with cardiometabolic diseases, such as diabetes, are predisposed towards microvascular insufficiencies and may experience stagnated healing of injured tissues. In past literature Vascular Occlusion Tests (VOTs), coupled with NIRS-based imaging approaches, have been applies with the goal of assessing oxygenated flow to a site; either as dynamic, point-based, measurements or wide-area measurements at discrete timepoints. Breath-holding (BH), as a stimulus, holds potential to induce oxygenated flow changes without the need for additional equipment and the potential discomfort associated with vascular occlusion. In this study, end-exhalation breath-holding was applied on normal subjects. Each subject was imaged via an in-house build Near InfraRed Optical Scanner (NIROS) to acquire continuous spatio-temporal maps of effective hemoglobinbased parameters. Average trendlines of the effective parameters (via oxy- (ΔHbO), deoxy- (ΔHbR), total hemoglobin (ΔHbT), and oxygen saturation (ΔStO2)) were extracted. In addition, a Pearson’s correlation-based approach was applied to obtain correlation maps in terms of the oxygenated flow. Results indicated that statistically significant changes in the oxygenated flow was observed between the BH phase and post-BH phase, with correlation maps indicating regions of positively correlated flow in control subjects. Breath-holding holds potential as a technique to assess oxygenated flow changes and the extent of change between a given site to its surroundings in disease models, as currently assessed in diabetic foot ulcers and radiation dermatitis applications.

We present HemodynamicVR, a virtual reality headset combined with functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). We believe that sensing brain activity will enable novel interactions in virtual reality. In this paper, we assess a user’s cybersickness based on the change of their total hemoglobin concentration measured via an fNIRS device, and we try to mitigate that by changing the field of view (FOV) in real-time. In this experiment, participants experienced VR locomotion with an added variable FOV controlled by velocity changes and by fNIRS. The results suggest that fNIRS can detect cybersickness as registered by the qualitative SSQ test.

Objectives Definition and fullfillment of analytical performance specifications (APS) for measurement uncertainty (MU) allow to make laboratory determinations clinically usable. The 2014 Milan Strategic Conference have proposed models to objectively derive APS based on: (a) the effect of analytical performance on clinical outcome; (b) biological variation components; and (3) the state of the art of the measurement, defined as the highest level of analytical performance technically achievable. Using these models appropriately, we present here a proposal for defining APS for standard MU for some common biochemical measurands. Methods We allocated a group of 13 measurands selected among the most commonly laboratory requested tests to each of the three Milan models on the basis of their biological and clinical characteristics. Both minimum and desirable levels of quality of APS for standard MU of clinical samples were defined by using information obtained from available studies. Results Blood total hemoglobin, plasma glucose, blood glycated hemoglobin, and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 were allocated to the model 1 and the corresponding desirable APS were 2.80, 2.00, 3.00, and 10.0%, respectively. Plasma potassium, sodium, chloride, total calcium, alanine aminotransferase, creatinine, urea, and total bilirubin were allocated to the model 2 and the corresponding desirable APS were 1.96, 0.27, 0.49, 0.91, 4.65, 2.20, 7.05, and 10.5%, respectively. For C-reactive protein, allocated to the model 3, a desirable MU of 3.76% was defined. Conclusions APS for MU of clinical samples derived in this study are essential to objectively evaluate the reliability of results provided by medical laboratories.

In present days, the routine health checkups compulsorily include the total hemoglobin value and blood pressure (BP) for every individual irrespective of their illness. These two are the basic factors to be accurate for every person to be healthy. Total hemoglobin value determines whether a person is anemic and the blood pressure points if an individual is stress-free or with hypertension. Hemoglobin can be monitored using oxygenated hemoglobin (SpO2) percentage. At present, there is no device that is used to monitor both SpO2 and BP. In the present work, SpO2 and BP are calculated using the same graphical user interface (GUI) in MATLAB. The protein content available in blood is hemoglobin which is used to transport oxygen and carbon dioxide from lungs to different parts of the body and vice versa. SpO2 and BP are calculated using IR sensors of two different wavelengths and a compatible photodetector using the photo-plethysmography (PPG) technology and MATLAB to calculate systolic and diastolic pressure and SpO2 percentage in blood. The work can be useful in rural areas where hospital facilities are not available.

Here we propose the use of a multispectral raster-scanning optoacoustic mesoscopy (MS-RSOM) system for noninvasive monitoring of hemodynamic changes (oxy- hemoglobin, deoxy-hemoglobin, total hemoglobin and oxygen saturation) in the skin microvasculature.

Cupping therapy is a promising method to cure or reduce symptoms of some diseases including muscle pain/tenderness/fatigue. Although the applications of cupping therapy have a thousand-year history in traditional Chinese medicine and have been spread to other countries in recent years, cupping therapy is something like a black box, and the unskilled user can hardly control it due to the absence of physiological observations. In this study, we developed a NIRS instrument with three probes to detect the blood-oxygen level of the skin tissue where the cupping therapy is being carried out. Each probe includes two detection channels. One of the probes is embedded in the cup to monitor the hemodynamic parameters in the cupping site, and the other two probes are placed outside, surrounding the cupping site. Using this monitor, we can observe the changes in oxy-hemoglobin ([HbO2]), deoxy-hemoglobin ([Hb]), and total hemoglobin ([tHb]), as well as the heart rate, calculated from the change curves of [HbO2] during cupping therapy in real time. Therefore, the doctor or other users can see the impact of cupping on the tissues to which it is applied which should facilitate the development and understanding of the application of cupping.

Background Point-of-care testing (POCT) plays an integral role in the management of acutely ill patients presenting to the emergency department (ED). Due to its rapid turnaround time, POCT has been shown to improve ED workflow, reduce unnecessary admissions and lessen the burden on ED staff. The aim of the study was to compare the accuracy, precision and linearity of the Nova Stat Profile Prime Plus® (Nova Biomedical, Waltham, MA, USA) to the Radiometer ABL800 FLEX® (Radiometer South Africa Pty Ltd, Gauteng) and the Abbott i-stat Chem8+® (Abbott, Princeton, NJ, USA) POCT analyzers. Methods A convenience sample of 150 discarded whole blood specimens was obtained and analyzed. Paired test measurements were conducted for method comparison. Accuracy was measured by pairing individual results from the Nova Stat Profile Prime Plus® with either the Radiometer ABL800 FLEX® or the Abbot i-stat Chem8+® analyzers by calculating the differences. Results The with-in run percentage coefficient of variation (%CV) was below 2.4% for pH, carboxyhemoglobin (COHb), deoxyhemoglobin (HHb), total hemoglobin (tHb), total bilirubin (tBil), sodium (Na), potassium (K), chloride (Cl), ionized calcium (iCa), urea, glucose and lactate, and was below 5.1% for all other analytes. The day-to-day %CV was below 1.6% for pH, COHb, HHb, tHb, tBil, Na, K, Cl, iCa, urea, glucose and lactate, and below 6.10% for all other analytes. The correlation coefficient (r) was 0.351 and ranged from 0.897 to 0.998 for all analytes. The mean bias was minimal for all analytes. Conclusion There was a good correlation between the Nova Stat Profile Prime Plus® and the Radiometer ABL800 FLEX®/Abbott i-STAT Chem8+® POCT analyzers. The Stat Profile Prime Plus® exhibited good precision both within-run and day-to-day.
