The United Nations suggests the global population of denture wearers (an artificial device that acts as a replacement for teeth) is likely to rise significantly by the year 2050. Dentures become colonized by microbial biofilms, the composition of which is influenced by complex factors such as patient’s age and health, and the nature of the denture material. Since colonization (and subsequent biofilm formation) by some micro-organisms can significantly impact the health of the denture wearer, the study of denture microbiology has long been of interest to researchers. The specific local and systemic health risks of denture plaque are different from those of dental plaque, particularly with respect to the presence of the opportunist pathogen Candida albicans and various other nonoral opportunists. Here, we reflect on advancements in our understanding of the relationship between micro-organisms, dentures, and the host, and highlight how our growing knowledge of the microbiome, biofilms, and novel antimicrobial technologies may better inform diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of denture-associated infections, thereby enhancing the quality and longevity of denture wearers.

Miscanthus giganteous is probably the most fast growing and low nutrient bioenergy crop among lignocellulosic feedstocks. Despite its significant content in fermentable sugars, currently Miscanthus biomass is not used for biogas/methane production due to the high-lignin and low moisture content in the winter/spring harvest as well as cellulose crystallinity, which limit access to enzymatic action for all lignocellulosic feedstock. This study identified that a photocatalytic pretreatment prior to anaerobic digestion helps increase the substrate's biodegradability by oxidising the lignin fraction, leading to increased methane yield up to 46% compared to the untreated. A novel photocatalyst was manufactured by reactive magnetron-sputtering deposition of TiO2 particles onto natural zeolite supports, which provided important trace elements for the anaerobic digestion process and retained a large surface area that acted as biofilm to boost growth of the microbial community. A load of 2% w/w catalyst in the bioreactor after 3 h of photocatalytic treatment led to 220 mLN gVS−1, with a net energy balance that is achieved for the whole process when treating the dispersed phase suspension at concentrations above 10 g L−1.

Bismuth oxide – titanium dioxide composite materials were produced by pulsed DC reactive magnetron sputtering onto two types of commercially available titanium dioxide nanoparticles. The use of an oscillating bowl enabled deposition of bismuth oxide uniformly onto loose powders, in contrast to solid substrates typically used for the conventional magnetron sputtering processes. Variation of the deposition time allowed the production of composite materials with different amounts of bismuth oxide. The composite materials, as well as uncoated titania powders, were extensively analysed by a range of analytical techniques, including SEM/EDX, XRD, BET, XPS, TEM and UV–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. Photocatalytic properties of the materials were assessed under simulated visible light irradiation via degradation of acetone and methanol through measurements of carbon dioxide evolution. Additionally, the composite materials were characterised with a newly developed technique of reversed double-beam photoacoustic spectroscopy in order to obtain information on the distribution of electron traps. Bismuth oxide was found in crystalline β-Bi 2 O 3 form on both types of substrates without any additional heat treatment applied. Though the distribution of bismuth oxide on titanium dioxide was found to depend strongly on particle size and deposition time used, the composite materials exhibited significantly enhanced visible light photocatalytic activity compared to either of the commercial titania materials used as a substrate.

Blood vessel disease is a major contributor to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality and is hallmarked by dysfunction of the lining endothelial cells (ECs). These cells play a significant role in vascular homeostasis, through the release of mediators to control vessel diameter, hence tissue perfusion. Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) can be used as potential drug delivery platforms for vasodilator drugs. Here, using an ex vivo model of vascular function, we examine the use of titania coating for improved biocompatibility and release dynamics of MSN loaded sodium nitroprusside (SNP). MSNs (95 ± 23 nm diameter; pore size 2.7 nm) were synthesised and fully characterised. They were loaded with SNP and coated with titania (TiO2), using the magnetron sputtering technique. Pre-constricted aortic vessels were exposed to drug loaded MSNs (at 1.96 × 1012 MSN mL−1) and the time course of vessel dilation observed, in real time. Exposure of viable vessels to MSNs lead to their internalization into the cytoplasm of ECs, while TiMSNs were also observed in the elastic lamina and smooth muscle cell layers. We demonstrate that titania coating of MSNs significantly improves their biocompatibility and alters the dynamics of drug release. A slow and more sustained relaxation was evident after uptake of TiMSN-SNP, in comparison to uncoated MSN-SNP (rate of dilation was 0.08% per min over a 2.5 h period). The use of titania coated MSNs for drug delivery to the vasculature may be an attractive strategy for therapeutic clinical intervention in cardiovascular disease.

Antimicrobial resistance is a global threat with catastrophic forecasts in terms of human and economic losses. The so-called ESKAPE pathogens (Enterococcus species, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumanii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enterobacter species) represent a range of species of particular concern because they cause many serious hospital infections, and can show resistance toward available commercial antibiotics. Copper-containing zeolite nanocrystals (10e30 nm) with FAU-type structure (Cu-FAU), in the form of stable colloidal suspensions, were prepared at high yield in the absence of organic templates and studied for their activity against ESKAPE microorganisms. The materials were active against all six ESKAPE species. The survival of Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa on stainless-steel coupons after direct treatment with the CuFAU zeolite suspensions was determined quantitatively. Complete decontamination (5-log reduction in bacterial counts) was achieved within 20 min for P. aeruginosa, and within 10 min for the K. pneumoniae and S. aureus. This result is significant, particularly for sanitization of surfaces in healthcare settings, with the potential to initiate a new direction of research to help address the global antimicrobial resistance threat.

A semi-quantitative screening method was used to compare the killing efficacy of Ag zeolites against bacteria and yeast as a function of the zeolite type, crystal size and concentration. The method, which substantially reduced labor, consumables and waste and provided an excellent preliminary screen, was further validated by quantitative plate count experiments. Two pairs of zeolite X and zeolite beta with different sizes (ca. 200 nm and 2 m for zeolite X and ca. 250 and 500 nm for zeolite beta) were tested against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Candida albicans (C. albicans) at concentrations in the range 0.05–0.5 mg ml−1. Reduction of the zeolite crystal size resulted in a decrease in the killing efficacy against both microorganisms. The semi-quantitative tests allowed convenient optimization of the zeolite concentrations to achieve targeted killing times. Zeolite beta samples showed higher activity compared to zeolite X despite their lower Ag content, which was attributed to the higher concentration of silver released from zeolite beta samples. Cytotoxicity measurements using peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) indicated that Ag zeolite X was more toxic than Ag zeolite beta. However, the trends for the dependence of cytotoxicity on zeolite crystal size at different zeolite concentrations were different for the two zeolites and no general conclusions about zeolite cytotoxicity could be drawn from these experiments. This result indicates a complex relationship, requiring the necessity for individual cytotoxicity measurements for all antimicrobial applications based on the use of zeolites.

A general method for the preparation of transition metal carbide, nitride and sulfide composite materials in the form of macroscopic beads is reported. Ti- and W-based materials were prepared by thermal conversion of Ti- or W-loaded ion-exchange resins in an appropriate atmosphere, inert, NH3 or H2S, respectively. The spherical macroscopic shape of the resin was preserved in most of the product composite materials. The fabrication of pure TiN spherical macrostructures is also demonstrated by using TiO2 spherical beads prepared from the Ti-loaded resin by resin oxidation at 600 °C in the thermal treatment procedure.

Titanium dioxide − bismuth tungstate composite materials were prepared by pulsed DC reactive magnetron sputtering of bismuth and tungsten metallic targets in argon/oxygen atmosphere onto anatase and rutile titania nanoparticles. The use of an oscillating bowl placed beneath the two magnetrons arranged in a co-planar closed field configuration enabled the deposition of bismuth tungstate onto loose powders, rather than a solid substrate. The atomic ratio of the bismuth/tungsten coatings was controlled by varying the power applied to each target. The effect of the bismuth tungstate coatings on the phase, optical and photocatalytic properties of titania was investigated by X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area measurements, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and an acetone degradation test. The latter involved measurements of the rate of CO2 evolution under visible light irradiation of the photocatalysts, which indicated that the deposition of bismuth tungstate resulted in a significant enhancement of visible light activity, for both anatase and rutile titania particles. The best results were achieved for coatings with a bismuth to tungsten atomic ratio of 2:1. In addition, the mechanism by which the photocatalytic activity of the TiO2 nanoparticles was enhanced by compounding it with bismuth tungstate was studied by microwave cavity perturbation. The results of these tests confirmed that such enhancement of the photocatalytic properties is due to more efficient photogenerated charge carrier separation, as well as to the contribution of the intrinsic photocatalytic properties of Bi2WO6.

A novel powder handling technique was used to allow the deposition of bismuth tungstate coatings onto commercial titanium dioxide photocatalytic nanoparticles. The coatings were deposited by reactive pulsed DC magnetron sputtering in an argon/oxygen atmosphere. The use of an oscillating bowl with rotary particle propagation, positioned beneath two closed-field planar magnetrons, provided uniform coverage of the titania particle surfaces. The bismuth/tungsten atomic ratio of the coatings was controlled by varying the power applied to each target. The resulting materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area measurements, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. Photocatalytic properties under visible light irradiation were assessed using an acetone degradation test. It was found that deposition of bismuth tungstate onto titania nanoparticles resulted in significant increases in visible light photocatalytic activity, compared to uncoated titania. Of the coatings studied, the highest photocatalytic activity was measured for the sample with a Bi/W atomic ratio of 2/1.

Spherical mesoporous nanoparticles (MNPs) with a diameter of ∼100 nm were synthesised via a sol-gel method in the presences of organic template (with and without fluorescein dye encapsulation). The template molecules were removed by acidic extraction to form a regular pore lattice structure. The nanoparticle size and morphology were analysed using transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering analysis. The MNPs were further characterised by zeta potential, nitrogen adsorption measurements and infra-red spectroscopy. The interior pores had an average diameter of ∼3 nm and were loaded with an endothelial-independent vasodilator, sodium nitroprusside (SNP). The optimal drug loading and drug release was determined in high potassium physiological salt solution using dialysis and atomic absorption spectroscopy. We demonstrate that the initial instantaneous release is due to the surface desorption of the drug followed by diffusion from the pores. Furthermore, these drug loaded MNPs (with and without fluorescein dye encapsulation) were added to viable aortic vessels and release in real-time was observed, ex vivo. MNPs and loaded with and without SNP were incubated with the vessel (at 1.96 × 1012 NP mL−1) over a 3 h time period. The real-time exposure to unloaded MNPs resulted in a small attenuation in constriction that occurred after approximately 1 h. In contrast, MNPs loaded with SNP led to a rapid relaxation of aortic vessels that was sustained over the 3 h period (p < 0.001).

A multidisciplinary approach has been applied to the preparation of antibacterial Ag zeolite/silicone elastomer composites aimed at products that satisfy a range of requirements, namely good mechanical properties after zeolite incorporation and strongly antibacterial. Zeolite X was synthesised and used as antibacterial agent after ion-exchange with silver. The high level of silver (14 wt%) within the zeolite enabled the preparation of antibacterial composites containing a relatively low level of zeolite (2 wt%). The composites showed strong efficacy against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus epidermidis. Organic functionalization of the zeolite with organo-silanes prior blending with the matrix usefully improved composite mechanical properties and reduced color development in Ag zeolite containing silicone elastomers. Organo-silane modification did not substantially affect the antibacterial performance of the materials; the number of viable cells of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria was reduced to beyond detection limits within 24 hours of incubation. Efficacy of the Ag zeolite containing composites against the yeast Candida albicans was found to be substantially less than observed with the two bacteria. This study demonstrates that evaluation of polymer composites needs to be performed via a multidisciplinary approach in order to avoid compromising a particular aspect of the materials' design, characteristics or performance, including the use of reliable testing methods to determine the latter.

The preparation of pure zeolite nanocrystals (EMT-type framework) and their silver ion-exchanged (Ag+-EMT) and reduced silver (Ag0-EMT) forms is reported. The template-free zeolite nanocrystals are stabilized in water suspensions and used directly for silver ion-exchange and subsequent chemical reduction under microwave irradiation. The high porosity, low Si/Al ratio, high concentration of sodium and ultrasmall crystal size of the EMT-type zeolite permitted the introduction of a high amount of silver using short ion-exchange times in the range of 2–6 h. The killing efficacy of pure EMT, Ag+-EMT and Ag0-EMT against Escherichia coli was studied semi-quantitatively. The antibacterial activity increased with increasing Ag content for both types of samples (Ag+-EMT and Ag0-EMT). The Ag0-EMT samples show slightly enhanced antimicrobial efficacy compared to that of Ag+-EMT, however, the differences are not substantial and the preparation of Ag nanoparticles is not viable considering the complexity of preparation steps.

Stable colloidal suspensions of silicalite-1 were prepared by hydrothermal treatment of clear precursor suspensions at high temperatures, 150 and 170 °C. The precursor suspensions were pretreated prior to hydrothermal treatment. Different pretreatment procedures were applied, namely ultrasonic treatment or heating at 45–60 °C, for different periods of time. In all cases, the size of the crystals decreased with increasing the time of pretreatment. The pretreatment procedure was found to influence the behavior of the tetrapropylammonium hydroxide solution used as structure-directing template during hydrothermal treatment. Colloidal stability of pretreated samples was improved compared to samples prepared by direct hydrothermal treatment.

This study reports the seeded synthesis of MFI-type (ZSM-5) zeolite in fluoride medium at pH = 8.5. Crystal growth kinetics of the resulting zeolite (ZSM-5-F) as a function of seed content and crystallization temperature is studied. The crystallization time is reduced to 1.5 h and crystals with sizes below 200 nm and a Si/Al ratio of 23.6 are obtained. A zeolite with similar characteristics but synthesized in a hydroxyl medium (ZSM-5-OH) is used to evaluate ZSM-5s synthesized in different crystallization media. Their physicochemical properties are compared and particular attention is paid to the nature, number, and distribution of silanol sites. The two zeolites exhibit similar number of Brφnsted acid sites; however the material synthesized in a hydroxyl medium contains a substantially larger number of surface and internal silanols that impact significantly its catalytic performance in methanol to hydrocarbon transformation. While the two materials exhibit similar selectivity in methanol transformations, the catalyst synthesized in fluoride medium shows superior activity and resistance to deactivation. The results suggest that seeded synthesis in a fluoride medium can be used for the preparation of superior zeolite catalysts.
