There is no doubt that there is a significant link between the oral environment and the development of pneumonia; however, there have been few comparative studies of swallowing using video endoscopy (VE) and video fluorography (VF) as indicators to determine the actual availability of oral intake and the choice of food form. This study was performed to examine whether the oral environment or swallowing function contributes more to the development of pneumonia in the elderly.Methods: The study population consisted of 24 patients (7 men and 17 women; age range: 64– 97 years; average age: 86 years) assessed using the Oral Health Assessment Tool (OHAT), VE and VF at Fukuoka Dental College Hospital. The most common disease was pneumonia (17 patients), followed by cerebral infarction (5 patients), pyelonephritis (4 patients), bronchitis (2 patients), Parkinson’s disease (2 patients), scleroderma (1 patient), diabetes (1 patient), eosophageal cancer (1 patient) and Parkinson’s syndrome> (1 patient). Some patients had multiple diseases. Oral intake was possible in 20 patients (80%), whereas tube feeding and gastric banding were required in 4 patients.Results: The OHAT score was not correlated with either the VE or VF score. Furthermore, the OHAT score was not significantly different between the multiple- and no/single-pneumonia episode groups. The group with multiple episodes of pneumonia had lower VE and VF scores than those with no or only a single episode of pneumonia.Conclusion: Oral assessment, VE and VF are necessary to evaluate swallowing in patients with suspected dysphagia. Swallowing function, especially as assessed by VE and VF, is more important than examination of the oral environment for evaluating risk of recurrent aspiration pneumonia in the elderly. In addition, multiple factors contribute to recurrent pneumonia in patients with a good oral environment, including subclinical aspiration, pharyngeal clearance and delayed activation of the gag reflex.Keywords: dysphagia, Oral Health Assessment Tool, video endoscopy, video fluorography

Background: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of the newly developed oral simulators with oral diseases and symptoms for nursing students’ oral assessment education to promote their collaboration with oral healthcare professionals after qualification. Methods: The participants were first-year students (n=105) at a nursing school in Japan. Ten oral simulators with angular cheilitis, missing teeth, dental caries, calculus, periodontitis, hypoglossal induration, food debris, and crust formation were created by a team of dentists. After a 45-minute lecture programme for oral assessment performance with the Oral Health Assessment Tool (OHAT), the ability test with the simulators and the OHAT and the test feedback were conducted in a 30-minute practical programme. To evaluate the effectiveness of the programmes, questionnaire surveys regarding confidence and perceptions of oral assessment performance and ability tests with slides of oral images were conducted at baseline and after the programmes. A Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to compare their baseline survey results with their postprogramme results. Results: Ninety-nine students (94.3%) participated in this study. The results of the ability test with the simulators and the OHAT in the practical programme showed that the correct answer rates of assessing tongue, gingiva, present teeth, and oral pain were less than 40%. Their levels of confidence, perception, and ability of oral assessment performance were significantly higher after the programmes than they were at baseline (PConclusions: This study identified several problems with nursing students’ oral assessment skills and showed that oral assessment education with simulators might be effective in improvingtheir oral assessment confidence, perceptions, and performance.

This study sought to investigate the current status and faculty members' perceptions of oral care education in Bachelor of Nursing curriculums in Japan.Data were gathered through a questionnaire survey of 196 participants, who were faculty members in charge of oral care education in the basic, adult, gerontological, and home nursing fields, from 295 nursing schools that offered Bachelor degrees in nursing across Japan.The quantitative data showed that 38.5% of the participants worked for less than 5 years as oral care educators, only 15.5% taught oral care in perioperative wards, only 62.2% used an oral care training simulator, and less than 30% believed that training in the prevention of oral diseases should be enhanced. From the descriptive responses, this study identified such problems as the inability of students to perform student-on-student and patient-based oral care training owing to the risk of SARS-CoV-2 transmission, and the lack of teaching materials, time, and human resources, and cooperation with other nursing fields and health professionals.This study revealed several problems in oral care education in the Bachelor of Nursing curriculums in Japan. To tackle these challenges, this study suggests the development of an interdisciplinary course that unifies oral care education in nursing fields, in order to promote collaborative oral care education and to improve nursing students' knowledge and skills of oral care.

ObjectiveOral care is effective for preventing pneumonia, but objective evaluation of its effect on swallowing is lacking. Oral assessment scores, such as the Oral Health Assessment Tool (OHAT), are used to evaluate the oral environment to monitor oral care. Methods: We investigated the relationship between OHAT score and swallowing function in 24 patients aged 64–97 years.ResultsThe OHAT score did not correlate with the video endoscopy (VE) or video fluorography (VF) scores. Furthermore, the OHAT score was not significantly different between the multiple and no or single pneumonia episode groups. The group with multiple episodes of pneumonia had lower VE and VF scores than that with no or a single episode of pneumonia (p < 0.01).ConclusionsOral assessment, VE, and VF scores are necessary to evaluate swallowing in patients with suspected dysphagia. In addition, recurrent pneumonia among patients with a good oral environment has multiple contributing factors, including subclinical aspiration, pharyngeal clearance, and delayed activation of the gag reflex.

This study aimed to investigate the performance of oral assessment and health care education at nursing schools across Japan to identify problems and the need for oral health professional support.The participants were the academic staff in charge of oral health care education in the basic, adult, gerontological, and home nursing fields of 295 schools in Japan that offered a bachelor's degree in nursing. A questionnaire was sent to 1180 heads of the nursing fields of these schools. They were requested to have oral health care educators complete the survey; data on the performance of oral assessment and health care education and human resources allocated were collected through a questionnaire.A total of 311 (26%) questionnaires were returned, 196 (63%) of which were completed by oral health care educators. Regarding the performance of oral assessment education, the majority (71%) of them spent less than 2 hours in teaching, and only 24.5% taught the usage of oral assessment tools. Regarding the performance of oral health care education, more than 90% spent less than 2 hours in lecture-based and practical oral health care education, respectively. Less than half taught the association of periodontal diseases with diabetes and cardiovascular diseases and use of fluoride for caries prevention in the lectures, and only approximately 30% taught the usage of an interspace brush or dental floss. Moreover, less than 10% of oral health professionals taught oral health care in lectures or practical oral health care.This study revealed problems associated with oral assessment and health care education in Japanese nursing schools. To address these, support from oral health care professionals is required. Further studies are also required to reveal problems in oral assessment and health care education in other nursing schools that do not offer a bachelor's degree programme in Japan and other countries.

BackgroundOral healthcare education for health professional students is important to promote collaborative oral healthcare practice among health professionals. The purpose of this follow-up, cross-sectional study was to investigate attitudes, awareness, and perceptions regarding oral healthcare among dental and nursing students and to compare them both between baseline and the completion of the education programme and between dental and nursing students to identify problems with oral healthcare programmes in dental education.MethodThe subjects included 88 dental and 119 nursing students. The dental students participated in geriatric and preventive dentistry courses for oral healthcare education. The nursing students participated in independent oral healthcare courses comprising 45 h of training with case-based learning and were taught and instructed by multiple health professionals, including dentists. Questionnaires were distributed to the participants to compare attitudes, awareness, and perceptions regarding oral healthcare between baseline and the completion of the education programme and between dental and nursing students. A chi-square test, Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and Mann–Whitney U test were used to compare the data.Result and ConclusionThe data of 48 (28 male and 20 female) dental students and 103 (9 male and 94 female) nursing students who completed the questionnaires both at baseline and after the education programme were used for the comparisons. After the education programme, more than 90% of the students were interested in oral healthcare practice; hoped to practise oral healthcare post-qualification; and perceived oral healthcare to be effective for preventing dental caries, periodontal diseases, and aspiration pneumonia. These attitudes and perceptions were statistically significantly improved after the education. However, the level of awareness of oral healthcare and the level of perception of the importance of collaboration with healthcare workers in oral healthcare practice after education were lower in the dental students than in the nursing students. Multi-professional oral healthcare education with case-based learning has the potential to improve awareness of oral healthcare and perceptions of the importance of collaborative oral healthcare practice.

Background Phantom bite syndrome (PBS) is characterized by an uncomfortable sensation during occlusion without any evident abnormality. A recent case-control study with single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) using 99mTc-ethyl cysteinate dimer could not find the specific features of regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF), which might be due to the heterogeneity of PBS. We analyzed the brain images of PBS corresponding to the clinical features by studying PBS subgroups. Methods This study contributes to elucidating the pathophysiology of PBS by evaluating regional brain perfusion on SPECT and its clinical features. We performed SPECT using 99mTc-ethyl cysteinate dimer in 44 patients with PBS. The SPECT images were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. Results Asymmetrical rCBF patterns were detected, corresponding to symptom laterality. Patients with PBS with right-side symptoms showed right-side-predominant rCBF asymmetry in the parietal region and left-side-predominant rCBF asymmetry in the thalamus, and vice versa. Moreover, the analysis of the association between rCBF and patient behaviors revealed that patients who blamed their dentists for their symptoms tended to have a symmetrical rCBF pattern. Conclusion Patients with PBS showed blood flow imbalance in the thalamus and parietal region corresponding to symptom laterality. There are two types of symmetrical and asymmetrical rCBF patterns in the pathophysiology of PBS despite similar clinical manifestations.

Objectives The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of interprofessional educational programmes on the improvement of nursing students' oral assessment performances by comparing their attitudes, confidence, abilities, and self‐performance before and after the education. Materials and methods The subjects included 112 first‐year nursing students in a Japanese nursing school. They participated in the oral assessment educational programmes, which were supported by dentists and introduced into the 1‐year curriculum. The first programme was a 1.5‐hr lecture with a self‐oral assessment training in May 2018, and the second was a 1‐hr oral assessment training in October 2018. The questionnaire surveys investigating nursing students' attitudes, confidence, and self‐performance regarding oral assessment and the tests measuring their oral assessment abilities were conducted before and after the programmes. The total scores on the tests were 0–9 points. Results A total of 101 (90.2%) nursing students responded to all the questionnaires and tests. Their attitudes and confidence regarding oral assessment were significantly improved after the programmes. The total average scores on the tests were significantly increased from 6.8 points at baseline to 7.9 points after the programmes. The percentage of their performance of self‐oral assessment every day significantly increased from 15.8% at baseline to 32.7% after the programmes. Conclusions These results suggested that the educational programme might be effective in improving not only the students' attitudes and confidence regarding oral assessment but also their oral assessment abilities and self‐oral assessment performance. Therefore, future programmes must focus on training them to improve oral health care referrals.

BACKGROUND The relationship between oral and cognitive functions among older people is highly debated. OBJECTIVE To examine whether oral functions are related to changes in the levels of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) biomarkers in older Japanese outpatients. METHODS This observational study included 52 outpatients aged ≥65 years who underwent dental examinations at the Fukuoka Dental College Hospital. The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) was performed, and MCI blood biomarker levels were assessed at baseline and after 2 years. The present dental and periodontal conditions and the oral functions (tongue pressure and masticatory performance) were evaluated. Changes in parameters from baseline to follow-up were compared using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, McNemar test or chi-squared test. Associations among changes in the parameters were analysed using Spearman's rank correlation coefficient. RESULTS The follow-up rate in this study was 67%. Objective Collaborative oral health care among health-care workers (HCWs) is important to prevent oral and systemic diseases. The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceptions, attitudes and performance of HCWs regarding collaborative oral health care and to compare them among HCWs. Method The subjects were dentists (DTs), dental hygienists (DHs), hospital nurses (HNs), speech-language-hearing therapists (STs) and certified care workers (CCWs) in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. DTs were members of the Fukuoka Dental Association, and DHs worked in dental clinics. HNs worked in hospitals without dental departments. STs and CCWs were members of professional associations. Data were collected by a mail survey. The chi-square test and Kruskal-Wallis test were used to compare the data among HCWs. Results A total of 119 DTs, 91 DHs, 229 HNs, 119 STs and 121 CCWs participated in this study. The total response rate was 20.6%. There were significant differences in perceptions of what should be performed as part of oral health care among HCWs. Only 20%-60% of HCWs performed collaborative oral health care, while more than 75% were willing to perform such care. Levels of collaborative oral health care with other types of professionals and positive willingness to perform such care were lower among HNs than among the other HCWs. Conclusions It is suggested that oral health professionals should recognise the presence of differences in the perceptions, attitudes and performance among other types of HCW and try to improve these to promote interprofessional collaboration of oral health care in hospitals.

Objective This study investigates the effects of a study course in oral health care on the perceptions of nursing students. The course was designed and evaluated by a multi-professional team at a Japanese nursing school. Method The subjects were 119 nursing students. They participated in the oral health course that comprised 45h of training in 4 years. These were designed and taught by oral health professionals, a certified speech-hearing therapist, and nurses. Questionnaires were distributed to subjects to compare their perceptions and awareness about oral health care before, in between, and after the courses. A chi-square test was used to compare the data. Results After completing the courses, more than 95% of the participants were interested in the oral health care practice and expected to collaborate with oral health professionals after getting qualified. Additionally, they understood the effectiveness of oral health care for the prevention of aspiration pneumonia and perceived that oral health care should be provided to hospitalized patients and community-dwelling older adults. Their awareness of the need to learn techniques for tooth brushing support, salivary gland massage, oral management, swallowing training, removing tongue coating, and gargling, both in theory and practice, was significantly improved. Conclusion Multi-professional education has the potential to improve the awareness of nursing students of oral health care and promote collaborative oral health care in the future.

To mitigate the impact of dementia, initiating early intervention is important. This study aims to investigate the associations between deterioration in oral function and cognitive decline in older outpatients whose oral health was maintained in the dental clinic. This study included 50 outpatients aged &ge, 65 years. We used the Japanese version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA-J) to assess cognitive decline. Oral function was evaluated by tongue pressure, masticatory performance, and swallowing ability. A full-mouth periodontal examination was conducted, and the occlusal support and number of teeth were recorded. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for cognitive decline (MoCA-J score &le, 25 points) were calculated using logistic regression models. The age, number of teeth, tongue pressure, and masticatory performance were significantly correlated with cognitive decline (p &lt, 0.05). Logistic regression analyses revealed that cognitive decline was independently associated with age (OR: 1.25, 95% CI: 1.03&ndash, 1.52, p = 0.024), number of teeth (OR = 0.83, 95% CI: 0.76&ndash, 1.00, p = 0.047), and lower tongue pressure (OR: 0.87, 95% CI: 0.77&ndash, 0.98, p = 0.022). Lower tongue pressure and a small number of remaining teeth may be associated with cognitive decline in Japanese outpatients.

Japan Diabetes Complication and Prevention prospective (JDCP) study was conducted to examine the association between glycemic control and oral conditions in a large database of Japanese patients with diabetes. It included a total of 6099 patients with diabetes (range, 40–75 years) who had been treated as outpatients between 2007 and 2009. The mean number of present teeth at baseline was 19.8 and women with type 2 diabetes had fewer teeth than men with type 2 diabetes. Within the previous year, 17% of all patients had lost teeth. At baseline, 32% had experienced gingival swelling, 69% had brushed more than twice a day, 37% had used interdental cleaning aids, and 43% had undergone regular dental checkups. Multiple logistic regression analysis indicated that type 1 patients with HbA1c ≥ 7.0% were at higher risk of having fewer than 20 teeth (odds ratio [OR] 2.38; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.25–4.78), and type 2 patients with HbA1c ≥ 8.0% also were at high risk of having fewer than 20 teeth (OR 1.16; 95% CI 1.00–1.34), after adjustment for nine possible confounding factors. In conclusion, patients with diabetes were found to be at high risk of tooth loss, and the poorer the glycemic control, the higher the risk of tooth loss in these patients.

Background and aim Recent shifts in the distribution of Japan's population towards older ages, have meant that the chance of encountering patients with dementia in dental clinics is increasing. Many studies have shown that the brain volume decreases along with the progression of dementia. Although previous studies have reported a relationship between tooth loss or periodontitis and the onset of dementia, the pathological mechanisms underlying this association have not been elucidated. In this study, we aimed to examine the relationship between the oral condition and brain atrophy and to discuss how to adequately deal with patients with dementia. Participants and methods This cross-sectional study included 15 participants who underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The participants were 60 years or older and presented with cognitive decline, including Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI), diagnosed by a neurologist. We obtained information on the oral condition, lifestyle, cognitive function, and brain atrophy. Cognitive function was assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). MR images of each patient were analyzed using the voxel-based specific regional analysis system for Alzheimer's disease (VSRAD) to provide a quantitative measure of the degree of brain atrophy. Results The study population included 4 male and 11 female patients. The mean age and mean number of present teeth were 75.9 years (SD 6.7) and 15.0 (SD 11.1), respectively. The median MMSE score was 25.6 (SD 3.7). The degree of atrophy of the whole brain was significantly correlated with the number of present teeth (ρ = −0.72, p Conclusion This study demonstrated that the number of present teeth could be an indicator of the progress of dementia. Preserving the teeth as well as the acquisition of a regular exercise habit might be important for preventing progression of dementia. Further research examining a larger study population and analyzing a greater number of factors is warranted.

It is thought to be a rare disease in psychiatry, but many patients are visiting dental clinics seeking treatment to remove a foreign body. Even though the features of oral cenesthopathy might be different between a psychiatric clinic and a dental clinic, there has been no clinico-statistical study from dentists. In this study, we report a clinico-statistical study of patients with oral cenesthopathy in dentistry. Methods: This is a retrospective chart review of 606 outpatients with oral cenesthopathy in Tokyo Medical and Dental University from April 2010 through to March 2015. Results: A total of 159 male and 447 female patients were included in this study. The mean age was 62.08 years, and female patients were older than male patients. The trigger of the dental treatment and the acute phase of depression at the onset were significantly related (p=0.037). Only 128 patients (36%) had clinically significant improvement after 6 months of pharmacotherapy. No history of psychiatric disorders (odds ratio [OR] 0.479 [95% confidence interval {CI}: 0.262–0.875], p=0.017) and longer duration of illness (>18 months) (OR 2.626 [95% CI: 1.437–4.799], p=0.002) were significant factors for clinical outcomes. Conclusion: Patients with oral cenesthopathy in our clinic were predominantly elderly female patients. Dental treatment in the acute phase of depression might be a risk factor for oral cenesthopathy. Therefore, comprehending the situation of psychiatric disorder and obtaining adequate informed consent might be required to prevent the trouble concerning oral cenesthopathy. Type D personality-the tendency toward combined negative affectivity and social inhibition-is a risk factor for coronary heart disease. Although Type D personality has been linked to low adherence to diabetic care, it is unclear whether it is related to adherence to dental therapy. Thus, study examined the relationship between Type D personality and withdrawal from dental therapy. A web-based questionnaire was used to compare a treatment dropout group (n = 225) and maintenance group(n = 236). The questionnaire was designed to assess Type D personality traits, reasons for dropout, and respondent sociodemographic characteristics and attitudes. There were no significant differences in the sociodemographic characteristics of the two groups. However, the proportion of respondents with a Type D personality was significantly larger in the dropout group than in the maintenance group (P = 0.04). The most common reasons for dental therapy dropout were "improvement of symptoms" (46.2%) and "busy with business or study" (30.7%). The most frequent attitude reported in the dropout group was negative feelings toward dental practice. In conclusion, Type D personality might be related to dropout from dental therapy.

Background "Phantom bite syndrome," a persistent complaint of an uncomfortable bite sensation with no obvious occlusal abnormal finding, recently was suggested to be related with central nervous system dysfunction. Here, we report a case of phantom bite syndrome in which the occlusal discomfort was improved with mirtazapine and aripiprazole combination parallel with regional cerebral blood flow change. Case report A 60-year-old-female patient came to our clinic with the chief complaint of a "loosely bite" after dental treatment and various uncomfortable sensations of body sites. One year after the medication therapy, the prosthodontic retreatment was carried out successfully, and a good outcome was obtained for over 24 months so far. In addition, a subsequent change of regional cerebral blood flow was observed in single-photon emission computed tomography: the right and left asymmetry of cerebral blood flow in the frontal lobe has disappeared along with the improvement to the symptoms improvement. Conclusions This case suggests that some central nervous system dysfunction involving dopaminergic system might be related to the pathophysiology of phantom bite syndrome.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the practices, knowledge, confidence, and attitude toward oral cancer among Japanese oral health professionals (J-OHPs) and to identify Japanese-specific problems in oral cancer practices by comparing them between Japan and Australia. A questionnaire survey regarding oral cancer practices among Australian oral health professionals (Au-OHPs) was conducted in Australia in 2014-2015. The questionnaire was translated into Japanese, and a Web-based questionnaire survey was conducted among 131 Japanese dentists (J-Dentists) and 131 dental hygienists (J-DHs) in 2016. To compare the J-OHPs' findings with the Au-OHPs', the data of Australian dentists (Au-dentists) and Australian dental hygienists (Au-DHs) were extracted from the Australian survey. Those findings were then compared via a statistical analysis. Eighty-two J-Dentists, 55 J-DHs, 214 Au-Dentists, and 45 Au-DHs participated in this study. Only 34.1 % of J-Dentists and 36.4 % of J-DHs performed oral cancer screenings on their patients; J-OHPs were significantly less likely to perform them than Au-OHPs. The level of knowledge and confidence regarding oral cancer among JOHPs were significantly lower than among Au-OHPs. About 90 % of J-OHPs felt that they needed additional training in oral cancer practices. Less than 40 % of J-OHPs performed oral cancer screenings in their patients. The low level of knowledge and confidence regarding oral cancer among JOHPs may contribute to their low performance of oral cancer practices. Therefore, further education and training programs for oral cancer practices should be provided to Japanese OHPs for the prevention and early detection of oral cancer.

Aim A previous study reported that the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of Japanese individuals dropped sharply as they reached old-old age. The aim of present study was to explore the risk factors of OHRQoL by investigating the association of OHRQoL with oral indices, lifestyle and psychological distress. Methods A questionnaire survey was carried out to assess the OHRQoL, oral indices, lifestyle, and psychological distress of patients who were of ≥75 years of age and who regularly visited a dental clinic for maintenance. OHRQoL and psychological distress were assessed using the General Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI) and the General Health Questionnaire, respectively. The relationships between the GOHAI score and related factors were examined by non-parametric bivariate and logistic regression analyses using a GOHAI cut-off score of 45.0. Results A total of 187 old-old patients with a mean age of 77.9 ± 3.0 years participated in the present study. The average GOHAI score was 50.8 ± 8.0. In the bivariate analyses, the average sleeping hours, use of sleep medication, Short Form 8-Item Health Survey (SF-8), General Health Questionnaire score, and the number of teeth present were significantly correlated with the GOHAI score. A logistic regression analysis showed that the number of teeth present, General Health Questionnaire and the use of sleep medication were associated with the GOHAI score. Conclusions The present study found that the OHRQoL was strongly associated with insomnia and depression. It is therefore suggested that oral healthcare professionals take general background information, such as the presence of insomnia and depression, into consideration to improve OHRQoL when they treat old-old patients. An extended method to discover exceptional association rule sets from incomplete databases is proposed. In an exceptional rule set, each itemset X, Y has a weak or no statistical relation to class C; however, the join of X and Y has a strong relation to C. An exceptional rule set can be used to infer long rules for the join of X and Y and to discover rare rules. The proposed method calculates the rule evaluation odds ratio directly. In this study, the method is applied to rule discovery using a database of community-dwelling elderly. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can help discover interesting rare rules and exceptional association rule sets. The results show the effectiveness of the proposed method in the fields of medicine and health care.

OBJECTIVE The aim was to investigate the relationships between subjective well-being and the existence of primary care dentists in community-dwelling elderly people. BACKGROUND Some studies have reported subjective well-being focusing on oral health, but no studies have examined the relationship between subjective well-being and primary care dentists. METHODS This cross-sectional study used data from community-dwelling elderly people aged ≥70 years (n = 624). The Philadelphia Geriatric Center Morale Scale (PGCMS; range = 0 [low morale]-17) was used to assess subjective well-being. Additional information regarding age group, sex, medical consulting situation (ambulatory care/home care), primary care dentists, family structure, economic status, health status was collected via questionnaire. RESULTS The average PGCMS score in ambulatory care patients (ACP) group who have primary care dentists was highest among community-dwelling elderly people. In a logistic regression model, a low PGCMS score (0-11) was independently correlated to 80-89 age group (OR = 1.70; 95% CI, 1.13-2.54; P = 0.008), ≥90 age group (OR = 3.86; 95% CI, 1.83-8.18; P
