This paper describes the main findings of a national action-research project, promoted by Regional School Office of Campania (South of Italy), aimed at improving numeracy and mathematical literacy through supporting schools' activities. The main focus is on processes underlying the creation of capabilities in representation, reasoning and communication. They have been investigated through creation of appropriate activities on the management of different semiotic systems and argumentation. About 400 fifteen-years- old students have been involved in the experimentation, divided into 20 high schools classes, in the Campania Region (South of Italy). The activities were designed to improve students' capabilities to solve real world problems, according to the OECD's Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) framework. We investigated if the experimental activities might influence the acquisition of representation and communication skills and improve the PISA levels. We showed the project's rationale, its methodological choices, and theoretical framework. A protocols' analysis on conversion between various semiotic systems is also shown, mainly in two different schools' types (a Professional Institute and a Scientific High School). Finally, a quantitative analysis of the improvement of the PISA levels has been carried out, together with a discussion about the connection between the improvement of the mathematical skills and the realized activities.

When dealing with elementary algorithms in the classroom, we almost always limit ourselves to considering the purely procedural aspects. In so doing, we run the risk of providing students with a distorted and reductive vision of mathematics, which could foster an attitude of disaffection towards the discipline among students. This work aims to show that we can overturn this situation by changing our approach and thus make the study of some elementary algorithms an opportunity to increase interest in mathematics and encourage the development of skills and competences in students. Our idea is to use the inquiry-based learning methodology in the study of algorithms in order to re-evaluate their role in school mathematics classes. Below we will describe an experiment on the teaching of elementary algorithms conducted between 2016 and 2018 as part of the 'Math High School' project of the University of Salerno and based on thorough historical and scientific research. The project involved a group of 120 first-year high school students and the skills that the students were able to develop suggest that the experiment should be extended to the use of IBL methodology in handling other algorithms. The inquiry-based activities proposed can be applied in the classroom by teachers and can offer practical strategies and tools for teaching algorithms.

Social ties to colleagues on other work teams can spur creative ideas and workplace innovation by exposing an individual to diverse knowledge. However, for external knowledge to be recombined into innovation, the knowledge must first be recognized as potentially valuable. Going beyond traditional structural explanations, we predict that the use of diverse knowledge to generate creative ideas and solutions will depend in part on employees' psychological attachment to the organizational groups to which they belong, i.e., their social identity, and the strength of their social ties. We test our hypotheses in an R&D division of a global high-technology firm, finding that social identity influences the creative generativity of boundary-spanning ties. Specifically, stronger team identity renders interactions with colleagues on other work teams less generative of creative ideas, while identification with an overarching, superordinate group (e.g., a division) enhances creative generativity. We also hypothesize and find that tie strength attenuates the negative effect of team identity. © The Author(s) 2013.

In line with the latest positions of Gottlob Frege, this article puts forward the hypothesis that the cognitive bases of mathematics are geometric in nature. Starting from the geometry axioms of the "Elements" of Euclid, we introduce a geometric theory of proportions along the lines of the one introduced by Grassmann in "Ausdehnungslehre" in 1844. Assuming as axioms, the cognitive contents of the theorems of Pappus and Desargues, through their configurations, in an Euclidean plane a natural field structure can be identified that reveals the purely geometric nature of complex numbers. Reasoning based on figures is becoming a growing interdisciplinary field in logic, philosophy and cognitive sciences, and is also of considerable interest in the field of education, moreover, recently, it has been emphasized that the mutual assistance that geometry and complex numbers give is poorly pointed out in teaching and that a unitary vision of geometrical aspects and calculation can be clarifying.

In order to reduce the spread of COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019), it is crucial to take extraordinary prevention and safety measures in dental offices, and to defer all elective and non-urgent procedures. Dental emergencies are defined through oral symptoms but, the systemic and psychological conditions of each patient should be considered. The present short communication proposes a multilevel evaluation (oral, systemic and psychological) and risk assessment score for the management of dental emergencies following the SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2) outbreak. A comprehensive categorization and score scale assessment for dental emergencies allows a better identification of patient's treatment needs and avoids unnecessary contact between dental health care providers and patients during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. • Three new gastrodin derivatives were isolated and identified from B. procumbens • Bactericidal activity of extracts, fractions and isolated compounds from Bacopa procumbens • Procumgastrodin B and C showed activity against Candica albicans The bioassay-guided fractionation of the hydroalcoholic extract from aerial parts of Bacopa procumbens (Mill.) Greenm., allowed to isolate the known phenolic compound arbutin (1) as well as three new gastrodin derivatives which were denominated procumgastrodin A, procumgastrodin B and procumgastrodin C. These bioactive compounds were characterized using spectroscopic (1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, 1H-1H COSY, HSQC, HMBC) and spectrometric analysis (HRFAB-MS) as gastrodin 5-(4′"-hydroxybenzoyl)-shikimate (2), gastrodin 5-(cis - p -coumaroyl)-shikimate (3) and gastrodin 5-(trans - p -coumaroyl)-shikimate (4). The extracts and fractions showed antimicrobial activity with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) between 75 and 400 μg/mL and isolated compounds (1 - 4) showed activities of 12.5 to 100 μg/mL. All analyzed compounds displayed activity against any of the bacteria and yeast evaluated. A mixture of 3 and 4 exhibited particularly potent activity against the yeast Candida albicans. Lung toxicity in patients undergoing cetuximab and radiotherapy (Cetux-RT) for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) has been reported in literature and represents a serious side effect of concurrent therapies. We report a case of a HNSCC patient that developed neck emphysema during the course of Cetux-RT. The patient was an old male (80 years old) in a good performance status, with an oropharyngeal cancer (T4aN3a). During RT, cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) showed bilateral neck emphysema that was confirmed at restaging CT. We decided to stop the treatment and to treat the neck emphysema with conservative strategies. After one week CT was repeated and the neck emphysema had improved, so we decided to complete the RT treatment. Patients undergoing Cetux-RT must be properly selected, whereas IGRT imaging must be viewed carefully in order to permit an early diagnosis and careful management of the patients. Objective: Our aim was to determine the effect of aging on the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis function.Study Design: We studied 9 women aged 25 to 40 years with well-defined idiopathic premature ovarian failure and compared them with 8 women aged 51 to 70 years who had age-appropriate menopause. All women underwent 24 hours of frequent blood sampling every 10 minutes before and after replacement with transdermal estradiol targeted to achieve serum concentrations of approximately 100 pg/ml.Results: In the absence of estrogen exposure, women with premature ovarian failure demonstrated a greater 24-hour mean luteinizing hormone concentration compared with that in the older women with age-appropriate menopause (32.3+/-4.3 mlU/ml vs 19.2+/-2.4 mlU/ml, p=0.0001). Despite the lesser luteinizing hormone serum levels in the older group, the luteinizing hormone pulse frequency per 24 hours was similar (22.1+/-3.0 pulses per 24 hours in prematurely menopausal women vs 21.9+/-2.5 pulses per 24 hours in the older postmenopausal women, p=0.94). When exposed to estrogen, mean luteinizing hormone concentrations decreased to 11.6+/-2.7 mlU/ml in prematurely menopausal women versus 4.4+/-1.0 mlU/ml in older postmenopausal women, p=0.017. Both groups had suppressed mean luteinizing hormone secretion compared with their paired, non-estradiol-exposed studies, p=0.0001. Frequency of luteinizing hormone pulsations was reduced to 16.5+/-3.5 pulses per 24 hours in prematurely menopausal women exposed to estradiol (p < 0.0058, compared with non-estradiol-exposed women). Further reduction was observed in older postmenopausal women (11.5+/-1.1 pulses per 24 hours, p=0.0001, compared with nonestradiol exposure, and p=0.0125, vs prematurely menopausal, estradiol-exposed women). Pulse amplitude was suppressed in both prematurely menopausal women (5.6+/-0.5 mlU/ml to 2.3+/-0.5 mlU/ml, p=0.0001) and older postmenopausal women (3.6+/-0.4 mlU/ml to 2.3+/-0.6 mlU/ml p=0.04) in the presence of estradiol. Although luteinizing hormone pulse amplitudes were greater in the women with premature menopause in the absence of estradiol (p=0.0028) compared with those in older postmenopausal women, pulse amplitudes became similar in the presence of estradiol. Parallel changes in mean follicle-stimulating hormone were observed. Women with premature ovarian failure had a mean follicle-stimulating hormone level of 71.1+/-9.4 mlU/ml that was suppressed to 18.0+/-4.1 mlU/ml after estradiol exposure (p=0.0001); values in older postmenopausal women were 45.9+/-6.0 and 10.3+/-2.0, respectively (p=0.0001). Although the women with premature ovarian failure secreted more follicle-stimulating hormone in the absence and presence of estradiol, only the former situation was statistically significant (p=0.0008 and p=0.23, respectively).Conclusions: These data suggest that there is an age-related decrease in gonadotropin secretion that may be hypothalamic or pituitary in origin. There is less luteinizing hormone secreted in women older than age 50. There is greater suppression of luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone secretion by estradiol in aged women. Abstract: Byrsonima crassifolia (Malpighiaceae) has been used in traditional medicine for the treatment of some mental-related diseases; however, its specific neuropharmacological activities remain to be defined. The present study evaluates the anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, antidepressant, sedative effects produced by the extracts of Byrsonima crassifolia, and their influence on motor activity in ICR mice. Additionally, we determine the acute toxicity profiles of the Byrsonima crassifolia extracts and the presence of neuroactive constituents. Our results show that the methanolic extract of Byrsonima crassifolia produces a significant (P <0.05) antidepressant effect in the forced swimming test in mice at 500mg/kg dose. However, it does not possess anxiolytic, sedative, or anticonvulsant properties, and does not cause a reduction of mice locomotion (P >0.05). Although the main compound of the methanolic extract was identified as quercetin 3-O-xyloside (12mg/kg), our findings suggest that flavonoids, such as rutin (4.4mg/kg), quercetin (1.4mg/kg) and hesperidin (0.7mg/kg), may be involved in the antidepressant effects. To the best of our knowledge, the present study constitutes the first report on the presence of the flavonoids with neuropharmacological activity rutin and hesperidin in Byrsonima crassifolia. In conclusion, the present results showed that the methanolic extract standardized on flavonoids content of Byrsonima crassifolia possesses potential antidepressant-like effects in the FST in mice, and could be considered as relatively safe toxicologically with no deaths of mice when orally administered at 2000mg/kg. Abstract: The aim of the present work is to evaluate the putative antidepressant-like effects of a hydro-ethanolic extract (CEAp) and their fractions from the aerial parts of Aloysia polystachya (Griseb.) Moldenke (Verbenaceae) on the performance of male mice in the forced swimming test (FST). A single dose (100.0mg/kgp.o.) of CEAp, in male mice provoked a significant reduction of the immobility time (p<0.01). Such effect was also observed with short-term treatment (7 days) with single doses of 1.0 (p<0.01), 10.0 (p<0.05) and 100.0 (p<0.05)mg/kg/day of CEAp. Additionally, in a different set of experiments, repeated administration in a 24-h period (24, 18 and 1h before swimming test) with doses of 1.0 (p<0.05) and 10.0 (p<0.05)mg/kg p.o., of CEAp and 10.0mg/kgp.o., (p<0.05) of ethyl acetate fraction, provoked significant reduction of the immobility time of male mice in the FST. Moreover, it was noted important differences in the onset of the antidepressant-like effect in the FST, depending on the modality of treatment with CEAp (acute, short-term or repeated). Both, efficacy and potency were higher when repeated administration of CEAp was used, and surprisingly the dose of 10mg/kg (24, 18 and 1h before swimming test) was more effective than imipramine. In the same way, the short term administration (7 days) improved significantly efficacy and potency of the CEAp in comparison to a single dose treatment. The ethyl acetate fraction submitted to TLC demonstrated that main and minor components are phenolics and terpenes, respectively. In addition, this fraction gives a negative Shinoda''s test for flavonoids. These results indicate an antidepressant-like profile of action for the hydro-ethanolic extract and the component(s) of the ethyl acetate fraction obtained from A. polystachya, which deserve further investigation. Abstract: An infusion prepared with aerial parts from Galphimia glauca has been widely used in Mexican traditional medicine as a remedy for nervous excitement. The sedative activity of a methanolic extract from this plant has been demonstrated by neuropharmacological tests. This effect was attributed to the nor-secotriterpene named galphimine B (GB). In the present work, the anxiolytic and antidepressant-like effects of G. glauca methanolic extract (standardized on GB content, 8.3mg/g) were assayed by using the elevated plus-maze, light–dark test and the forced swimming paradigm, on ICR albino mice. This extract, administered orally, three times (24, 18 and 1h before the test), and in different doses (125, 250, 500, 1000 and 2000mg/kg) was able to increase significantly () the number of entries, as well as the time spent in the open arms of the elevated plus-maze, indicating an anxiolytic-like effect. A similar effect was observed in the light–dark paradigm test, the time spent in the light box was increased in treated mice. Nevertheless, this treatment was unable to change any parameter in the forced swimming test. Altogether, these results suggest an anxiolytic-like effect to the methanolic standardized extract of G. glauca on ICR inbred mice. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Cecropia obtusifolia and Marrubium vulgare have been widely used in Mexican traditional medicine for the control of type 2 diabetes. In order to evaluate the clinical effect produced by the aqueous extract from these species on type 2 non-controlled diabetes mellitus, a total of 43 outpatients were included. Based on the European NIDDM (policy group) criteria, only patients with poor response to the conventional treatment were selected. All patients maintained their medical treatment and also received a prepared infusion of the dry leaves of the plant treatment for 21 days. In a double-blind manner, the patients were randomly grouped as follows: 22 patients were treated with C. obtusifolia and 21 with M. vulgare. The fasting blood glucose values were reduced by 15.25% on patients treated with C. obtusifolia, while cholesterol and triglycerides were decreased by 14.62% and 42.0%, respectively (ANOVA p< 0.02). In the case of patients treated with M. vulgare, the plasma glucose level was reduced by 0.64% and cholesterol and triglycerides by 4.16% and 5.78%, respectively. When the results were compared between groups, significant differences in glucose and cholesterol diminution were found. The obtained results showed that the infusion prepared with the leaves of C. obtusifolia (containing 2.99+/-0.14mg of chlorogenic acid/g of dried plant) produced beneficial effects on carbohydrate and lipid metabolisms when it was administered as an adjunct on patients with type 2 diabetes with poor response to conventional medical treatment. In order to compare the antihypertensive effectiveness and tolerability of a standardized extract from Hibiscus sabdariffa with captopril, a controlled and randomized clinical trial was done. Patients from 30 to 80 years old with diagnosed hypertension and without antihypertensive treatment for at least 1 month before were included. The experimental procedure consisted of the administration of an infusion prepared with 10 g of dry calyx from H. sabdariffa on 0.51 water (9.6 mg anthocyanins content), daily before breakfast, or captopril 25 mg twice a day, for 4 weeks. The outcome variables were tolerability, therapeutic effectiveness (diastolic reduction > or = 10 mm Hg) and, in the experimental group, urinary electrolytes modification. Ninety subjects were included, 15 withdrew from the study due to non-medical reasons; so, the analysis included 39 and 36 patients from the experimental and control group, respectively. The results showed that H. sabdariffa was able to decrease the systolic blood pressure (BP) from 139.05 to 123.73mm Hg (ANOVA p < 0.03) and the diastolic BP from 90.81 to 79.52mm Hg (ANOVA p < 0.06). At the end of the study, there were no significant differences between the BP detected in both treatment groups (ANOVA p > 0.25). The rates of therapeutic effectiveness were 0.7895 and 0.8438 with H. sabdariffa and captopril, respectively (chi2, p > 0.560), whilst the tolerability was 100% for both treatments. A natriuretic effect was observed with the experimental treatment. The obtained data confirm that the H. sabdariffa extract, standardized on 9.6mg of total anthocyanins, and captopril 50 mg/day, did not show significant differences relative to hypotensive effect, antihypertensive effectiveness, and tolerability.
