Abstract An evaluation was made of the larvicidal efficacy of lotilaner (Credeli®) in the treatment of dogs naturally infested with Dermatobia hominis larvae. A total of 12 dogs presenting at least three live D. hominis larvae were medicated. The animals were medicated orally with a single dose of no less than 20 mg/kg lotilaner. After drug administration, the animals remained at their homes, and observations were made to verify the larvicidal effect 6 hours after treatment. Live larvae were considered any parasite that exhibited motility after removal. For each animal was using the formula: 100 x [(total of live larvae before treatment − total live larvae after treatment) /total of live larvae before treatment] as criteria for evaluating lotilaner efficacy. A total of 98 larvae were counted in 12 dogs, with an average of 8.1 larvae per animal. The effectiveness of lotilaner was 80.6%. Nineteen larvae were found alive, albeit presenting hypomobility and lethargic behavior. However, note that the evaluation was performed just six hours after administration of the drug. Lotilaner administered orally in a single dose of 20 mg/kg showed 80.6% efficacy six hours after treating dogs naturally infested with D. hominis.

Background: Individuals with intellectual developmental disability (IDD) often face barriers in accessing dental care. The main aim of the present study was to test the feasibility and the outcome of oral hygiene (OH) procedures in Rett syndrome (RS) patients, and a secondary aim was to test the utility of music therapy during dental hygiene procedures. Methods: A case group (Group 1) of female patients with RS (stage 3 of disease, age > 5 years and p value < 0.001). The mean duration of the oral hygiene treatment was 7018″ (SD 3272″) in Group 1 and 873″ (SD 161″) in Group 0 (p value < 0.001). The mean duration of OH was significantly higher in Subgroup 1M and Subgroup 0M. Discussion: Based on the results of our case-control study, OH procedures can be successfully performed in RS patients with good compliance and efficacy. In addition, our study provides preliminary evidence to suggest that music therapy may be a useful adjunct, as it appears to improve patient cooperation.

Based on a growing body of evidence that a dysregulated innate immune response mediated by monocytes/macrophages plays a key role in the pathogenesis of COVID-19, a clinical trial was conducted to investigate the therapeutic potential and safety of oral macrophage activating factor (MAF) plus standard of care (SoC) in the treatment of hospitalized patients with COVID-19 pneumonia. Ninety-seven hospitalized patients with confirmed COVID-19 pneumonia were treated with oral MAF and a vitamin D3 supplement, in combination with SoC, in a single-arm, open label, multicentre, phase II clinical trial. The primary outcome measure was a reduction in an intensive care unit transfer rate below 13% after MAF administration. At the end of the study, an additional propensity score matching (PSM) analysis was performed to compare the MAF group with a control group treated with SoC alone. Out of 97 patients treated with MAF, none needed care in the ICU and/or intubation with mechanical ventilation or died during hospitalization. Oxygen therapy was discontinued after a median of nine days of MAF treatment. The median length of viral shedding and hospital stay was 14 days and 18 days, respectively. After PSM, statistically significant differences were found in all of the in-hospital outcomes between the two groups. No mild to serious adverse events were recorded during the study. Notwithstanding the limitations of a single-arm study, which prevented definitive conclusions, a 21-day course of MAF treatment plus SoC was found to be safe and promising in the treatment of hospitalized adult patients with COVID-19 pneumonia. Further research will be needed to confirm these preliminary findings.

Little is discussed regarding the meaning of “definition” in primary school, where children often memorize definitions. In geometry, students frequently confuse “definition” with the “description” of a geometric object. The aim of this study is to verify whether a new hybrid methodology between storytelling and game-based learning called Geometrikoland exercises skills that fall within what we understand as “definitory thinking”, which the set of competencies and meta-competencies is associated with acquiring a true mastery of definitions in geometry. This goal can be achieved because the dynamics of Geometrikoland alter the approach to definitions. The methodology applied is a hybrid of storytelling and adventure game-based learning applied to a “engine” of quadrilateral theory. The experiment took place in a fifth-grade class in an Italian school. The analysis of some data based on the accuracy of geometry actions during workshops and qualitative analysis based on the analysis of oral arguments produced during the labs lead to the conclusion that, on average, children have gained a greater awareness of what it means to define a geometric object and a better understanding of the relationships between various subsets of the set of quadrilaterals, previously seen as separate sets. Further confirmation has been provided by comparing the results of two mini-tests (a placement test and an exit test), which are useful for assessing the skills associated with the criterion of arbitrariness, the criterion of uniqueness, and classificatory thinking.

Abstract Mites of the species Lynxacarus radovskyi, which are commonly found on domestic cats in Brazil, can cause discomfort, itching, and alopecia. The development of new, safer and more effective treatments with a broad spectrum of activity, including the use of isoxazolines, is needed. The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy of transdermal fluralaner in domestic cats naturally infested with L. radovskyi. Twenty cats were evaluated by trichograms and divided into two groups of 10 animals. The control group was not treated, while the treated group was given a single topical dose of fluralaner, as per the manufacturer’s instructions. The cats were reassessed for the presence of L. radovskyi eggs and mites on days D+7, D+14, D+28, D+42, D+56, D+70, D+84, and D+98. As of D+42, all the animals (100%) tested negative for mites, and remained parasite-free until the end of the study, while the control group tested positive throughout the experiment. It can be concluded that a single dose of fluralaner applied topically was effective in treating cats naturally infested with L. radovskyi.

Case series summary The present report describes middle ear cholesteatoma in two cats and also the use of video-otoscopy and flushing to assist with the diagnosis. CT and video-otoscopic examination and flushing were performed in two cats, a 13-year-old mixed breed spayed female cat and a 1-year-old mixed breed male cat, with middle ear cholesteatomas. During the procedure, keratinous material from the middle ears was collected for histopathological evaluation, demonstrating findings consistent with cholesteatoma, and the middle ears were flushed extensively. Relevance and novel information There is little information about middle ear cholesteatoma in cats, and to the authors’ knowledge, there are no reports in cats investigating the use of video-otoscopy to aid in the diagnosis of aural cholesteatoma, and this report demonstrates that it can aid in the diagnosis of this condition in cats. In addition, one of the cats had a concurrent otic polyp, which has not been previously reported in cats with cholesteatoma. Additionally, this is the first report of cholesteatoma in a young cat. The access to the cholesteatoma material was via ventral bulla osteotomy in one cat and via external canal without video-otoscopy in the other. More information regarding cholesteatoma in cats will help identify potential similarities and differences of this condition in cats compared with humans and dogs.

El objetivo del presente trabajo fue determinar la edad de transición de madera juvenil a madura a partir del estudio de la variación axial y radial de la densidad y realizar modelos descriptivos de distribución de madera juvenil y madura en el fuste de Populus deltoides, clon `Stoneville 67´ de 20 años de edad. La densidad presentó un aumento de sus valores de médula a corteza y desde la base hacia el ápice. La edad de transición se determinó entre los 10-12 años de edad, el volumen de madera juvenil y madura fue del 40 % y 60 % respectivamente. La distribución de la madera juvenil coincidió con el modelo de cilindro central.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) usually has a favorable course, although it is possible to observe BPPV with a high recurrence rate. Previous studies suggested that vitamin D deficiency might affect BPPV recurrences, and oxidative stress might play a complementary role in BPPV pathogenesis. This multicentric trial aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of oral nutritional supplementation with a compound of alpha-lipoic acid, Carnosine, and Zinc (LICA® (Difass International, Coriano (RN), Italy)), vitamins of group B and vitamin D in preventing BPPV recurrences. A total of 128 patients with high recurrence-BPPV were randomized in three arms: Arm 1 consisted of subjects with “insufficient” or “deficient” vitamin D blood levels, treated with daily oral supplementation of LICA®, vitamins of group B and vitamin D3 (800 UI), Arm 2 included BPPV subjects with “sufficient” vitamin D who did not receive any nutritional support, and Arm 3 included subjects with a “sufficient” serum concentration of vitamin D who received supplementation with a compound of LICA® and Curcumin. After six months of follow-up, a significant reduction of BPPV relapses compared to the baseline was found only in Arm 1 (−2.32, 95% CI: 3.41–1.62, p-value < 0.0001). Study results suggested that oral nutritional supplementation with vitamin D3 plus antioxidants can prevent relapses in patients suffering from high recurrence-BPPV.

Research suggests that viewing successful or fortunate others' social media portrayals may promote a more negative hedonic experience via social comparison tendencies, but this notion has rarely been tested experimentally. Here, we tested the possibility that viewing fortunate and unfortunate social media portrayals (vs. neutral portrayals) may also promote a negative hedonic experience. In Experiment 1, participants indicated their positive and negative affect before and after viewing either fortunate, unfortunate, or mundane (neutral) social media portrayals. Inconsistent with conventional theorizing, only participants who viewed the unfortunate portrayal reported more negative affect balance than participants who viewed the neutral portrayal. Experiment 2 provided conceptually similar results, indicating that participants viewing an unfortunate (vs. fortunate) portrayal indicated more negative affect balance. Although somewhat inconsistent with conventional wisdom, the findings suggest negative hedonic experiences can spread on social media. This paper describes the main findings of a national action-research project, promoted by Regional School Office of Campania (South of Italy), aimed at improving numeracy and mathematical literacy through supporting schools' activities. The main focus is on processes underlying the creation of capabilities in representation, reasoning and communication. They have been investigated through creation of appropriate activities on the management of different semiotic systems and argumentation. About 400 fifteen-years- old students have been involved in the experimentation, divided into 20 high schools classes, in the Campania Region (South of Italy). The activities were designed to improve students' capabilities to solve real world problems, according to the OECD's Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) framework. We investigated if the experimental activities might influence the acquisition of representation and communication skills and improve the PISA levels. We showed the project's rationale, its methodological choices, and theoretical framework. A protocols' analysis on conversion between various semiotic systems is also shown, mainly in two different schools' types (a Professional Institute and a Scientific High School). Finally, a quantitative analysis of the improvement of the PISA levels has been carried out, together with a discussion about the connection between the improvement of the mathematical skills and the realized activities.

Background: The purpose of this multicenter study was to retrospectively investigate the prognostic significance of the tumor microenvironment, in relation to survival in a large cohort of patients with laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC), using the method proposed by the International TILs Working Group in breast cancer. Methods: All consecutive patients with biopsy‐proven LSCC who underwent total laryngectomy (TL) between January 2014 and January 2023 were retrospectively included in the study. A retrospective review of medical records including surgical, pathological and follow‐up reports was performed. The density of TILs was determined according to the recommendations of the International TILs Working Group. Results: The study group included 186 patients with LSCC. High TILs were statistically correlated with reduced size and extension of primary tumor (pT stage) with a statistically significant value (S: p = 0.01; P: p = 0.0003) and without needs of salvage therapy (S: p = 0.03; P: p = 0.004). Low TILs were indicative of worse prognosis. Conclusions: Our study confirmed the protective value of TILs and the prognostic role of the tumor microenvironment in LSCC; furthermore, our results showed that the score proposed by the International TILs Working Group for breast cancer can be applied to LSCC. Obesity is characterized by an excessive and abnormal accumulation of fat. According to the 2022 National Health and Nutrition Survey, in Mexico, the prevalence of overweight and obesity—diagnosed if one’s body mass index (BMI) was ≥25 kg/m2—in adults was 75.2%. A strong association between the amount of visceral fat and diseases such as diabetes mellitus type II has been recognized. Species of the Bauhinia genus have lipid-lowering and antidiabetic properties. The aim of this work was to evaluate the lipolytic and antiadipogenic activity of Bauhinia divaricata L. in 3T3-L1 cells and to identify the major compounds in the bioactive treatments. The extraction of aerial parts allowed us to obtain hexanic (BdHex), ethyl acetate (BdEAc), and hydroalcoholic (BdHA) extracts. Lipid levels were measured in 3T3-L1 cells differentiated into adipocytes. Our evaluation of cell viability identified an IC50 > 1000 μg/mL in all the extracts, and our evaluation of the antiadipogenic activity indicated that there was a significant reduction (p < 0.001) in the accumulation of lipids with hydroalcoholic (60%) and ethyl acetate (75%) extracts of B. divaricate compared with metformin at 30 mM (65%). The major compounds identified in these extracts were as follows: triacetin (1), 2,3-dihydroxypropyl acetate (2), (3E)-2-methyl-4-(1,3,3-trimethyl-7-oxabicyclo[4.1.0]hept-2-yl)-3-buten-2-ol (3), 2,5-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (4), (3R)-3-hydroxydodecanoic acid (5), kaempferol-3-O-rhamnoside (6), and quercetin 3-O-rhamnoside (7). Some of these naturally occurring compounds have been related to the anti-obesity effects of other medicinal plants; therefore, these compounds isolated from B. divaricata could be responsible for inhibiting the differentiation process from preadipocytes to mature adipocytes.

When dealing with elementary algorithms in the classroom, we almost always limit ourselves to considering the purely procedural aspects. In so doing, we run the risk of providing students with a distorted and reductive vision of mathematics, which could foster an attitude of disaffection towards the discipline among students. This work aims to show that we can overturn this situation by changing our approach and thus make the study of some elementary algorithms an opportunity to increase interest in mathematics and encourage the development of skills and competences in students. Our idea is to use the inquiry-based learning methodology in the study of algorithms in order to re-evaluate their role in school mathematics classes. Below we will describe an experiment on the teaching of elementary algorithms conducted between 2016 and 2018 as part of the 'Math High School' project of the University of Salerno and based on thorough historical and scientific research. The project involved a group of 120 first-year high school students and the skills that the students were able to develop suggest that the experiment should be extended to the use of IBL methodology in handling other algorithms. The inquiry-based activities proposed can be applied in the classroom by teachers and can offer practical strategies and tools for teaching algorithms.

In this work we intend to share an educational path on mathematical games developed in the last classes of the high schools that participate to the research-project Mathematical High School Project, a project elaborated by the research group in mathematics education of the Department of Mathematics of the University of Salerno (Italy) and dedicated to scientific high school students. The "Historical path in mathematical games" is a didactic laboratory activity dedicated to students of the last year of scientific high schools. The researchers collaborated with the teachers of the schools and carried out an interdisciplinary path on puzzles and logic games invented or reworked by important mathematicians of the last two centuries. Through these themes that were scientific, historical, artistic, musical, literary ones, connections have been created thank to the presentation of texts, images, paintings, drawings, musical and literary pieces.

Dermatobiosis is defined as a parasitosis caused by the larval stage of the human botfly Dermatobia hominis, often observed in large animals but considered unusual in pet animals. The aim of the report is to describe a naturally infested cat treated in a reference dermatology service with clinical presentation similar to neoplasia or abscess. A six-year-old spayed male Brazilian Shorthair cat with outdoor access, from the countryside of Rio de Janeiro state, was treated for two nodules, one located in the sacral region and one in the tail. The patient was restrained, and digital compression of the lesions resulted in expulsion of D. hominis larvae, accompanied by a purulent secretion. The removal of larvae and use of antiseptic at the site resolved the furuncular myiasis. It is possible to assume that the parasitism reported here resulted from the animal’s living arrangement, in a rural area with cattle parasitized by D. hominis. We conclude that parasitism by D. hominis should be present on the list of differential diagnoses of cats with nodules and that mechanical removal associated with the use of antiseptics is resolutive.

The extensive oil spill (> 2,900 km) that occurred in the southwestern Atlantic (2019/2020) increased the vulnerability of the Brazilian coast, affecting marine and coastal protected areas (MPAs). In addition to supporting conservation, MPAs are sustainably used by local populations to help maintain ocean-dependent livelihoods. In this sense, we aim to assess the socioeconomic vulnerability of human communities in MPAs affected by this major oil spill. Using digital mapping, we assessed the socioeconomic vulnerability of 68 human communities living in or near 60 MPAs of different categories that were impacted by this spill. This is the first assessment of the vulnerability status of human populations under significant levels of poverty and social inequality, which are particularly dependent on healthy and effective Brazilian MPAs. More than 6,500 enterprises and institutions were mapped, including trade activities, services, tourism, and leisure venues. Most enterprises (34.4%) were involved in the food sector, related to the ocean economy, and, therefore, highly vulnerable to oil spills. Furthermore, the majority (79.3%) of the vulnerable activities are concentrated in multiple-use MPAs, with extractive reserves coming second and accounting for 18%. This result shows the high vulnerability of this tropical coast to oil accidents and the risks to food security for traditional communities. We also found a heterogeneous vulnerability indicator along the coast, with the most vulnerable regions having an undiversified economic matrix heavily dependent on activities such as fishing, family farming, tourism, accommodation, and the food sector. Thus, this study provides a tool to help prevent and mitigate economic losses and increases the understanding of the weaknesses of MPAs in the face of large-scale disasters, thus helping to build socioeconomic and ecological resilience.

Abstract Introduction Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) of the horizontal semicircular canal (hSCC) can present with otoconia blocking its lumen (canalith jam), with signs and symptoms that make it difficult to distinguish from central nervous system pathology. Objective Here we report two cases of canalith jam affecting the hSCC and offer a theoretical mechanism based on known vestibular neurophysiology. Methods We use video‐oculography to document the canalith jam and show the moment the otoconia loosen. Results Canalith jam is a rare form of BPPV remedied with repositioning maneuvers. Conclusion Clinicians should consider canalith jam as a mechanism for BPPV when the nystagmus is (a) Direction fixed with fixation removed and during positional testing; (b) Velocity dependent on supine head position; (c) Converts to geotropic directional changing nystagmus.

La ricerca scientifica sui fondamenti epistemologici del pensiero matematico rappresenta, nel panorama della teorizzazione scientifica uno dei temi di maggiore interesse, sia per la definizione dei concetti matematici, sia per la specificazione cognitivo-simbolica che ne consegue. Una delle costanti del discorso in atto è rappresentata dalla dialettica che si instaura tra il “pensare” e il “conoscere” laddove il “pensare” diventa il substrato generativo della “conoscenza” e la “conoscenza” la base strutturale del “pensiero”. Ciò è vero sia nella strutturazione dei “concetti matematici di base” e sia nella strutturazione del “pensiero matematico”. In quest’ottica, si fa strada una nuova idea di Liceo, il Liceo Matematico, in cui l’apprendimento della matematica segue le indicazioni di un approccio autopoietico e generativo, più proteso verso l’acquisizione di capacità strategiche e di problem solving creativo. Dal punto di vista metodologico, un contributo notevole all’evoluzione del discorso in atto lo fornisce il Capability approach. In questo contesto, ogni “azione didattica” si trasforma in un atto di perturbazione, in grado di generare nuovi “oggetti” del sapere attraverso un processo autopoietico, ermeneutico-ideativo di nuovi mondi. Qui si mettono in atto due diverse forme di apprendimento (apprendimento intenzionale e apprendimento profondo) che interagiscono in maniera sinergica influenzandosi vicendevolmente in un’alternanza dialettica di didattiche lineari (oggetti del sapere) e di didattiche non lineari (processi ideativi). Si profila, dunque, l’esigenza di superare la dicotomia tra la cultura umanistica e la cultura scientifica all’interno di un pensiero critico in grado di cogliere la sintesi tra immaginazione e razionalità approdando a una terza cultura, intesa come azione strategica capace di assicurare pari dignità al sapere scientifico e a quello umanistico.
