Rechargeable batteries that incorporate shaped three-dimensional electrodes have been shown to have increased power and energy densities for a given footprint area when compared to a conventional geometry, i.e., a planar cathode and anode that sandwich an electrolyte. Electrodes can be shaped to enable a higher loading of active material, while keeping the ion transport distance small, however, the relationship between electrical and mechanical performance remains poorly understood. A variety of electrode shapes have been explored, where the electrodes are individually shaped or intertwined with one another. Advances in manufacturing and shape and topology optimization have made such designs a reality. In this paper, we explore sinusoidal half cells and interdigitated full cells. First, we use a simple electrostatics model to understand the cell resistance as a function of shape. We focus on low-temperature conditions, where the electrolyte conductivity decreases and the governing dimensionless parameters change. Next, we use a chemo-mechanics model to examine the stress concentrations that arise due to intercalation-driven volume expansion. We show that shaped electrodes provide a significant reduction in resistance, however, they result in unfavorable stress concentrations. Overall, we find that the fully interdigitated electrodes may provide the best balance with respect to this trade-off.

Narrowband galaxy surveys have recently gained interest as a promising method to achieve the necessary accuracy on the photometric redshift estimate of individual galaxies for stage-IV cosmological surveys. One key advantage is the ability to provide higher spectral resolution information about galaxies that should allow a more accurate and precise estimation of galaxy stellar population properties. However, the impact of adding narrow-band photometry on the stellar population properties estimate is largely unexplored. The scope of this work is two-fold: on one side, leveraging the predictive power of broad-band and narrow-band data to infer galaxy physical properties such as stellar masses, ages, star formation rates and metallicities. On the other hand, evaluating the improvement of performance in estimating galaxy properties when we use narrow-band data instead of broad-band. In this work we measure the stellar population properties of a sample of galaxies in the COSMOS field for which both narrowband and broadband data are available. In particular, we employ narrowband data from PAUS and broad-band data from CFHTLS. We use two different spectral energy distribution fitting codes to measure galaxy properties, namely CIGALE and Prospector. We find that the increased spectral resolution of narrow-band photometry does not yield a substantial improvement on constraining galaxy properties using spectral energy distribution fitting. Still we find that we obtain a more diverse distribution of metallicities and dust optical depths with cigale when employing the narrowband data. The effect is not as prominent as expected, which we relate this to the low narrowband SNR of a majority of the galaxies, the respective drawbacks of both codes as well as the coverage only in the optical regime. The forward modelling of galaxy surveys has recently gathered interest as one of the primary methods to achieve the required precision on the estimate of the redshift distributions for stage IV surveys. One of the key aspects of forward modelling a galaxy survey is the connection between the physical properties drawn from a galaxy population model and the intrinsic SEDs, achieved through SPS codes (e.g. FSPS). However, SPS requires a large number of detailed assumptions on the constituents of galaxies, for which the model choice or parameter values are currently uncertain. In this work, we perform a sensitivity study of the impact that the variations of the SED modelling choices have on the mean and scatter of the tomographic galaxy redshift distributions. We assumed the Prospector beta model as the fiducial input galaxy population model and used its SPS parameters to build 9 bands magnitudes of a fiducial sample of galaxies. We then built samples of galaxy magnitudes by varying one SED modelling choice at a time. We modelled the colour redshift relation of these galaxy samples using the SOM approach. We placed galaxies in the SOM cells according to their observed frame colours and used their cell assignment to build colour selected tomographic bins. Finally, we compared each variant's binned redshift distributions against the estimates obtained for the fiducial model. We find that the SED components related to the IMF, AGNs, gas physics, and the attenuation law substantially bias the mean and the scatter of the tomographic redshift distributions with respect to those estimated with the fiducial model. Regardless of the applied stellar mass function based re-weighting strategy, the bias in the mean and the scatter of the tomographic redshift distributions are greater than the precision requirements set by next-generation Stage IV galaxy surveys, such as LSST and Euclid., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 29 pages, 12 figures

We present a simple, differentiable method for predicting emission line strengths from rest-frame optical continua using an empirically-determined mapping. Extensive work has been done to develop mock galaxy catalogues that include robust predictions for galaxy photometry, but reliably predicting the strengths of emission lines has remained challenging. Our new mapping is a simple neural network implemented using the JAX Python automatic differentiation library. It is trained on Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument Early Release data to predict the equivalent widths (EWs) of the eight brightest optical emission lines (including H$\alpha$, H$\beta$, [O II], and [O III]) from a galaxy's rest-frame optical continuum. The predicted EW distributions are consistent with the observed ones when noise is accounted for, and we find Spearman's rank correlation coefficient $\rho_s > 0.87$ between predictions and observations for most lines. Using a non-linear dimensionality reduction technique (UMAP), we show that this is true for galaxies across the full range of observed spectral energy distributions. In addition, we find that adding measurement uncertainties to the predicted line strengths is essential for reproducing the distribution of observed line-ratios in the BPT diagram. Our trained network can easily be incorporated into a differentiable stellar population synthesis pipeline without hindering differentiability or scalability with GPUs. A synthetic catalogue generated with such a pipeline can be used to characterise and account for biases in the spectroscopic training sets used for training and calibration of photo-$z$'s, improving the modelling of systematic incompleteness for the Rubin Observatory LSST and other surveys., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures, 1 table. In this paper, we introduce a density-based topology optimization framework to design porous electrodes for maximum energy storage. We simulate the full cell with a model that incorporates electronic potential, ionic potential, and electrolyte concentration. The system consists of three materials, namely pure liquid electrolyte and the porous solids of the anode and cathode, for which we determine the optimal placement. We use separate electronic potentials to model each electrode, which allow interdigitated designs. As the result, a penalization is required to ensure that the anode and cathode do not touch, i.e. causing a short circuit. We compare multiple 2D designs generated for different fixed conditions, e.g. material properties. A 3D design with complex channel and interlocking structure is also created. All optimized designs are far superior to the traditional monolithic electrode design with respect to energy storage metrics. We observe up to 750% increase in energy storage for cases with slow effective ionic diffusion within the porous electrode.

We present a new high-precision strong lensing model of PLCK G287.0$+$32.9, a massive lens galaxy cluster at $z=0.383$, with the aim to get an accurate estimation of its effective Einstein radius and total mass distribution. We also present a spectroscopic catalog containing accurate redshift measurements for 490 objects, including multiply-lensed sources and cluster member galaxies. We exploit high-quality spectroscopic data from three pointings of the VLT Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer, covering a central $3~\rm{arcmin}^2$ region of the cluster. We complete the spectroscopic catalog by including redshift measurements from VLT-VIMOS and KECK-DEIMOS. We identify 129 spectroscopic cluster member galaxies, with redshift values $0.360 \leq z \leq 0.405$ and $m_{\rm{F160W}} \leq 21$, and 24 photometric ones identified with a Convolutional Neural Network from ancillary HST imaging. We also identify 114 multiple images from 28 background sources, of which 84 images from 16 sources are new and the remaining ones were identified in previous work. The best-fitting lens model shows a root mean square separation value between the predicted and observed positions of the multiple images of $0.75''$, corresponding to an improvement in reconstructing the observed positions of the multiple images of a factor of $2.5$ with respect to previous models. Using the predictive power of our new lens model we find 3 new multiple images and we confirm the configuration of three systems of multiple images that were not used for the optimization of the model. The derived total mass distribution confirms this cluster to be a very prominent gravitational lens with an effective Einstein $\theta_{E} = 43.4'' \pm 0.1''$, that is in agreement with previous estimates and corresponds to a total mass enclosed in the critical curve of $M_E = {3.33}_{-0.07}^{+0.02} \times{ 10^{14} M_\odot}$., Comment: submitted to "Astronomy & Astrophysics" and accepted the on January 29th 2024

Accurate redshift calibration is required to obtain unbiased cosmological information from large-scale galaxy surveys. In a forward modelling approach, the redshift distribution n(z) of a galaxy sample is measured using a parametric galaxy population model constrained by observations. We use a model that captures the redshift evolution of the galaxy luminosity functions, colours, and morphology, for red and blue samples. We constrain this model via simulation-based inference, using factorized Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC) at the image level. We apply this framework to HSC deep field images, complemented with photometric redshifts from COSMOS2020. The simulated telescope images include realistic observational and instrumental effects. By applying the same processing and selection to real data and simulations, we obtain a sample of n(z) distributions from the ABC posterior. The photometric properties of the simulated galaxies are in good agreement with those from the real data, including magnitude, colour and redshift joint distributions. We compare the posterior n(z) from our simulations to the COSMOS2020 redshift distributions obtained via template fitting photometric data spanning the wavelength range from UV to IR. We mitigate sample variance in COSMOS by applying a reweighting technique. We thus obtain a good agreement between the simulated and observed redshift distributions, with a difference in the mean at the 1$\sigma$ level up to a magnitude of 24 in the i band. We discuss how our forward model can be applied to current and future surveys and be further extended. Locally isoperimetric $N$-partitions are partitions of the space $\mathbb R^d$ into $N$ regions with prescribed, finite or infinite measure, which have minimal perimeter (which is the $(d-1)$-dimensional measure of the interfaces between the regions) among all variations with compact support preserving the total measure of each region. In the case when only one region has infinite measure, the problem reduces to the well known problem of isoperimetric clusters: in this case the minimal perimeter is finite, and variations are not required to have compact support. In a recent paper by Alama, Bronsard and Vriend, the definition of isoperimetric partition was introduced, and an example, namely the \emph{lens} partition, was shown to be locally isoperimetric in the plane. In the present paper we are able to give more examples of isoperimetric partitions: in any dimension $d\ge 2$ we have the \emph{lens}, the \emph{peanut} and the \emph{Releaux} triangle. For $d\ge 3$ we also have a \emph{thetrahedral} partition. To obtain these results we prove a \emph{closure} theorem which enables us to state that the $L^1_{loc}$-limit of a sequence of isoperimetric clusters is an isoperimetric partition, if the limit partition is composed by \emph{flat} interfaces outside a large ball. In this way we can make use of the known results about standard clusters. In the planar case $d=2$ we have a complete understanding of locally isoperimetric partitions: they exist if and only if the number of regions with infinite area is at most three. Moreover if the total number of regions is at most four then, up to isometries, there is a unique locally isoperimetric partition which is the lens, the peanut or the Releaux partition already mentioned., Comment: 25 pages, 4 figures

We use the GALFORM semi-analytical galaxy formation model implemented in the Planck Millennium N-body simulation to build a mock galaxy catalogue on an observer's past lightcone. The mass resolution of this N-body simulation is almost an order of magnitude better than in previous simulations used for this purpose, allowing us to probe fainter galaxies and hence build a more complete mock catalogue at low redshifts. The high time cadence of the simulation outputs allows us to make improved calculations of galaxy properties and positions in the mock. We test the predictions of the mock against the Physics of the Accelerating Universe Survey, a narrow band imaging survey with highly accurate and precise photometric redshifts, which probes the galaxy population over a lookback time of 8 billion years. We compare the model against the observed number counts, redshift distribution and evolution of the observed colours and find good agreement; these statistics avoid the need for model-dependent processing of the observations. The model produces red and blue populations that have similar median colours to the observations. However, the bimodality of galaxy colours in the model is stronger than in the observations. This bimodality is reduced on including a simple model for errors in the GALFORM photometry. We examine how the model predictions for the observed galaxy colours change when perturbing key model parameters. This exercise shows that the median colours and relative abundance of red and blue galaxies provide constraints on the strength of the feedback driven by supernovae used in the model.

A forward modelling approach provides simple, fast and realistic simulations of galaxy surveys, without a complex underlying model. For this purpose, galaxy clustering needs to be simulated accurately, both for the usage of clustering as its own probe and to control systematics. We present a forward model to simulate galaxy surveys, where we extend the Ultra-Fast Image Generator to include galaxy clustering. We use the distribution functions of the galaxy properties, derived from a forward model adjusted to observations. This population model jointly describes the luminosity functions, sizes, ellipticities, SEDs and apparent magnitudes. To simulate the positions of galaxies, we then use a two-parameter relation between galaxies and halos with Subhalo Abundance Matching (SHAM). We simulate the halos and subhalos using the fast PINOCCHIO code, and a method to extract the surviving subhalos from the merger history. Our simulations contain a red and a blue galaxy population, for which we build a SHAM model based on star formation quenching. For central galaxies, mass quenching is controlled with the parameter M$_{\mathrm{limit}}$, with blue galaxies residing in smaller halos. For satellite galaxies, environmental quenching is implemented with the parameter t$_{\mathrm{quench}}$, where blue galaxies occupy only recently merged subhalos. We build and test our model by comparing to imaging data from the Dark Energy Survey Year 1. To ensure completeness in our simulations, we consider the brightest galaxies with $i<20$. We find statistical agreement between our simulations and the data for two-point correlation functions on medium to large scales. Our model provides constraints on the two SHAM parameters M$_{\mathrm{limit}}$ and t$_{\mathrm{quench}}$ and offers great prospects for the quick generation of galaxy mock catalogues, optimized to agree with observations., Comment: Accepted for publication in JCAP. 33 pages, 17 figures

We aim at a direct measurement of the compactness of three galaxy-scale lenses in massive clusters, testing the accuracy of the scaling laws that describe the members in strong lensing (SL) models of galaxy clusters. We selected the multiply imaged sources MACS J0416.1$-$2403 ID14 ($z=3.221$), MACS J0416.1$-$2403 ID16 ($z=2.095$), and MACS J1206.2$-$0847 ID14 ($z=3.753$). Eight images were observed for the first SL system, and six for the latter two. We focused on the main deflector of each galaxy-scale SL system (identified as members 8971, 8785, and 3910, respectively), and modelled its total mass distribution with a truncated isothermal sphere. We accounted for the lensing effects of the remaining cluster components, and included the uncertainty on the cluster-scale mass distribution through a bootstrapping procedure. We measured a truncation radius value of $6.1^{+2.3}_{-1.1} \, \mathrm{kpc}$, $4.0^{+0.6}_{-0.4} \, \mathrm{kpc}$, and $5.2^{+1.3}_{-1.1} \, \mathrm{kpc}$ for members 8971, 8785, and 3910, respectively. Alternative non-truncated models with a higher number of free parameters do not lead to an improved description of the SL system. We measured the stellar-to-total mass fraction within the effective radius $R_e$ for the three members, finding $0.51\pm0.21$, $1.0\pm0.4$, and $0.39\pm0.16$, respectively. We find that a parameterisation of the properties of cluster galaxies in SL models based on power-law scaling relations with respect to the total luminosity cannot accurately describe their compactness over their full total mass range. Our results agree with modelling of the cluster members based on the Fundamental Plane relation. Finally, we report good agreement between our values of the stellar-to-total mass fraction within $R_e$ and those of early-type galaxies from the SLACS Survey. At the FRS Ion Catcher (FRS-IC), projectile and fission fragments are produced at relativistic energies, separated in-flight, energy-bunched, slowed down, and thermalized in the ultra-pure helium gas-filled cryogenic stopping cell (CSC). Thermalized nuclei are extracted from the CSC using a combination of DC and RF electric fields and gas flow. This CSC also serves as the prototype CSC for the Super-FRS, where exotic nuclei will be produced at unprecedented rates making it possible to go towards the extremes of the nuclear chart. Therefore, it is essential to efficiently extract thermalized exotic nuclei from the CSC under high beam rate conditions, in order to use the rare exotic nuclei which come as cocktail beams. The extraction efficiency dependence on the intensity of the impinging beam into the CSC was studied with a primary beam of 238U and its fragments. Tests were done with two different versions of the DC electrode structure inside the cryogenic chamber, the standard 1 m long and a short 0.5 m long DC electrode. In contrast to the rate capability of 10^4 ions/s with the long DC electrode, results show no extraction efficiency loss up to the rate of 2x10^5 ions/s with the new short DC electrode. This order of magnitude increase of the rate capability paves the way for new experiments at the FRS-IC, including exotic nuclei studies with in-cell multi-nucleon transfer reactions. The results further validate the design concept of the CSC for the Super-FRS, which was developed to effectively manage beams of even higher intensities.

Galaxy-scale strong lenses in galaxy clusters provide a unique tool to investigate their inner mass distribution and the sub-halo density profiles in the low-mass regime, which can be compared with the predictions from cosmological simulations. We search for galaxy-galaxy strong-lensing systems in HST multi-band imaging of galaxy cluster cores from the CLASH and HFF programs by exploring the classification capabilities of deep learning techniques. Convolutional neural networks are trained utilising highly-realistic simulations of galaxy-scale strong lenses injected into the HST cluster fields around cluster members. To this aim, we take advantage of extensive spectroscopic information on member galaxies in 16 clusters and the accurate knowledge of the deflection fields in half of these from high-precision strong lensing models. Using observationally-based distributions, we sample magnitudes, redshifts and sizes of the background galaxy population. By placing these sources within the secondary caustics associated with cluster galaxies, we build a sample of ~3000 galaxy-galaxy strong lenses which preserve the full complexity of real multi-colour data and produce a wide diversity of strong lensing configurations. We study two deep learning networks processing a large sample of image cutouts in three HST/ACS bands, and we quantify their classification performance using several standard metrics. We find that both networks achieve a very good trade-off between purity and completeness (85%-95%), as well as good stability with fluctuations within 2%-4%. We characterise the limited number of false negatives and false positives in terms of the physical properties of the background sources and cluster members. We also demonstrate the neural networks' high degree of generalisation by applying our method to HST observations of 12 clusters with previously known galaxy-scale lensing systems., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures, to be published on A&A

The wavelength dependence of the Kormendy relation (KR) is well characterised at low redshift but poorly studied at intermediate redshifts. The KR provides information on the evolution of the population of early-type galaxies (ETGs). Therefore, by studying it, we may shed light on the assembly processes of these objects and their size evolution. As studies at different redshifts are generally conducted in different rest-frame wavebands, it is important to investigate whether the KR is dependent on wavelength. Knowledge of such a dependence is fundamental to correctly interpreting the conclusions we might draw from these studies. We analyse the KRs of the three Hubble Frontier Fields clusters, Abell S1063 (z = 0.348), MACSJ0416.1-2403 (z = 0.396), and MACS J1149.5+2223 (z = 0.542), as a function of wavelength. This is the first time the KR of ETGs has been explored consistently over such a large range of wavelengths at intermediate redshifts. We exploit very deep HST photometry, ranging from the observed B-band to the H-band, and MUSE integral field spectroscopy. We improve the structural parameter estimation we performed in a previous work by means of a newly developed Python package called morphofit. With its use on cluster ETGs, we find that the KR slopes increase smoothly with wavelength from the optical to the near-infrared (NIR) bands in all three clusters, with the intercepts becoming fainter at lower redshifts due to the passive ageing of the ETG stellar populations. The slope trend is consistent with previous findings at lower redshifts. The slope increase with wavelength implies that smaller ETGs are more centrally concentrated than larger ETGs in the NIR with respect to the optical regime. As different bands probe different stellar populations in galaxies, the slope increase also implies that smaller ETGs have stronger internal gradients with respect to larger ETGs., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A as letter to the editor, 6 pages, 1 figure, 1 table

In today's modern wide-field galaxy surveys, there is the necessity for parametric surface brightness decomposition codes characterised by accuracy, small degree of user intervention, and high degree of parallelisation. We try to address this necessity by introducing $\mathrm{morphofit}$, a highly parallelisable $\mathrm{Python}$ package for the estimate of galaxy structural parameters. The package makes use of wide-spread and reliable codes, namely $\mathrm{SExtractor}$ and $\mathrm{GALFIT}$. It has been optimised and tested in both low-density and crowded environments, where blending and diffuse light makes the structural parameters estimate particularly challenging. $\mathrm{morphofit}$ allows the user to fit multiple surface brightness components to each individual galaxy, among those currently implemented in the code. Using simulated images of single S\'ersic and bulge plus disk galaxy light profiles with different bulge-to-total luminosity ($\mathrm{B/T}$) ratios, we show that $\mathrm{morphofit}$ is able to recover the input structural parameters of the simulated galaxies with good accuracy. We also compare its estimates against existing literature studies, finding consistency within the errors. We use the package in Tortorelli et al. 2023 to measure the structural parameters of cluster galaxies in order to study the wavelength dependence of the Kormendy relation of early-type galaxies. An infinite cluster $\mathbf E$ in $\mathbb R^d$ is a sequence of disjoint measurable sets $E_k\subset \mathbb R^d$, $k\in \mathbb N$, called regions of the cluster. Given the volumes $a_k\ge 0$ of the regions $E_k$, a natural question is the existence of a cluster $\mathbf E$ which has finite and minimal perimeter $P(\mathbf E)$ among all clusters with regions having such volumes. We prove that such a cluster exists in the planar case $d=2$, for any choice of the areas $a_k$ with $\sum \sqrt a_k < \infty$. We also show the existence of a bounded minimizer with the property $P(\mathbf E)=\mathcal H^1(\partial \mathbf E)$, where $\partial mathbf E$ denotes the measure theoretic boundary of the cluster. We also provide several examples of infinite isoperimetric clusters for anisotropic and fractional perimeters.

In this paper, we assess the impact of numerical resolution and of the implementation of energy input from AGN feedback models on the inner structure of cluster sub-haloes in hydrodynamic simulations. We compare several zoom-in re-simulations of a sub-sample of the cluster-sized haloes studied in Meneghetti et al. (2020), obtained by varying mass resolution, softening length and AGN energy feedback scheme. We study the impact of these different setups on the subhalo abundances, their radial distribution, their density and mass profiles and the relation between the maximum circular velocity, which is a proxy for subhalo compactness. Regardless of the adopted numerical resolution and feedback model, subhaloes with masses Msub < 1e11Msun/h, the most relevant mass-range for galaxy-galaxy strong lensing, have maximum circular velocities ~30% smaller than those measured from strong lensing observations of Bergamini et al. (2019). We also find that simulations with less effective AGN energy feedback produce massive subhaloes (Msub> 1e11 Msun/h ) with higher maximum circular velocity and that their Vmax - Msub relation approaches the observed one. However the stellar-mass number count of these objects exceeds the one found in observations and we find that the compactness of these simulated subhaloes is the result of an extremely over-efficient star formation in their cores, also leading to larger-than-observed subhalo stellar mass. We conclude that simulations are unable to simultaneously reproduce the observed stellar masses and compactness (or maximum circular velocities) of cluster galaxies. Thus, the discrepancy between theory and observations that emerged from the analysis of Meneghetti et al. (2020) persists. Meneghetti et al. (2020) recently reported an excess of galaxy-galaxy strong lensing (GGSL) in galaxy clusters compared to expectations from the LCDM cosmological model. Theoretical estimates of the GGSL probability are based on the analysis of numerical hydrodynamical simulations in the LCDM cosmology. We quantify the impact of the numerical resolution and AGN feedback scheme adopted in cosmological simulations on the predicted GGSL probability and determine if varying these simulation properties can alleviate the gap with observations. We repeat the analysis of Meneghetti et al. (2020) on cluster-size halos simulated with different mass and force resolutions and implementing several independent AGN feedback schemes. We find that improving the mass resolution by a factor of ten and twenty-five, while using the same galaxy formation model that includes AGN feedback, does not affect the GGSL probability. We find similar results regarding the choice of gravitational softening. On the contrary, adopting an AGN feedback scheme that is less efficient at suppressing gas cooling and star formation leads to an increase in the GGSL probability by a factor between three and six. However, we notice that such simulations form overly massive subhalos whose contribution to the lensing cross-section would be significant while their Einstein radii are too large to be consistent with the observations. The primary contributors to the observed GGSL cross-sections are subhalos with smaller masses, that are compact enough to become critical for lensing. Machine learning models can be used to predict physical quantities like homogenized elasticity stiffness tensors, which must always be symmetric positive definite (SPD) based on conservation arguments. Two datasets of homogenized elasticity tensors of lattice materials are presented as examples, where it is desired to obtain models that map unit cell geometric and material parameters to their homogenized stiffness. Fitting a model to SPD data does not guarantee the model's predictions will remain SPD. Existing Cholsesky factorization and Eigendecomposition schemes are abstracted in this work as transformation layers which enforce the SPD condition. These layers can be included in many popular machine learning models to enforce SPD behavior. This work investigates the effects that different positivity functions have on the layers and how their inclusion affects model accuracy. Commonly used models are considered, including polynomials, radial basis functions, and neural networks. Multi-objective optimization is the problem of optimizing simultaneously multiple objective functions and several techniques exist to deal with this problem. This paper aims to present the main methods that can be used to solve this issue in the context of relational databases. In particular, this work examines Top-k query to get the k best result from a dataset and Skyline query that provides a more general overview of the best results. We also discuss Flexible-skyline, a new method designed to improve upon the previous techniques, mitigating their shortcomings. For each method, we describe the main characteristics and present an overview of the algorithms implementing such thecniques, while comparing advantages and disadvantages.

A stellar occultation by Neptune's main satellite, Triton, was observed on 5 October 2017 from Europe, North Africa, and the USA. We derived 90 light curves from this event, 42 of which yielded a central flash detection. We aimed at constraining Triton's atmospheric structure and the seasonal variations of its atmospheric pressure since the Voyager 2 epoch (1989). We also derived the shape of the lower atmosphere from central flash analysis. We used Abel inversions and direct ray-tracing code to provide the density, pressure, and temperature profiles in the altitude range $\sim$8 km to $\sim$190 km, corresponding to pressure levels from 9 {\mu}bar down to a few nanobars. Results. (i) A pressure of 1.18$\pm$0.03 {\mu}bar is found at a reference radius of 1400 km (47 km altitude). (ii) A new analysis of the Voyager 2 radio science occultation shows that this is consistent with an extrapolation of pressure down to the surface pressure obtained in 1989. (iii) A survey of occultations obtained between 1989 and 2017 suggests that an enhancement in surface pressure as reported during the 1990s might be real, but debatable, due to very few high S/N light curves and data accessible for reanalysis. The volatile transport model analysed supports a moderate increase in surface pressure, with a maximum value around 2005-2015 no higher than 23 {\mu}bar. The pressures observed in 1995-1997 and 2017 appear mutually inconsistent with the volatile transport model presented here. (iv) The central flash structure does not show evidence of an atmospheric distortion. We show the existence of generalized clusters of a finite or even infinite number of sets, with minimal total perimeter and given total masses, in metric measure spaces homogeneous with respect to a group acting by measure preserving homeomorphisms, for a quite wide range of perimeter functionals. Such generalized clusters are a natural "relaxed'' version of a cluster and can be thought of as ``albums'' with possibly infinite pages, having a minimal cluster drawn on each page, the total perimeter and the vector of masses being calculated by summation over all pages, the total perimeter being minimal among all generalized clusters with the same masses. The examples include any anisotropic perimeter in a Euclidean space, as well as a hyperbolic plane with the Riemannian perimeter and Heisenberg groups with a canonical left invariant perimeter or its equivalent versions.

The analysis of cosmological galaxy surveys requires realistic simulations for their interpretation. Forward modelling is a powerful method to simulate galaxy clustering without the need for an underlying complex model. This approach requires fast cosmological simulations with a high resolution and large volume, to resolve small dark matter halos associated to single galaxies. In this work, we present fast halo and subhalo clustering simulations based on the Lagrangian perturbation theory code PINOCCHIO, which generates halos and merger trees. The subhalo progenitors are extracted from the merger history and the survival of subhalos is modelled. We introduce a new fitting function for the subhalo merger time, which includes a redshift dependence of the fitting parameters. The spatial distribution of subhalos within their hosts is modelled using a number density profile. We compare our simulations with the halo finder ROCKSTAR applied to the full N-body code GADGET-2. The subhalo velocity function and the correlation function of halos and subhalos are in good agreement. We investigate the effect of the chosen number density profile on the resulting subhalo clustering. Our simulation is approximate yet realistic and significantly faster compared to a full N-body simulation combined with a halo finder. We design heat exchangers using level-set method based topology optimization. The heat exchange between two fluids in separate channels is maximized while constraining the pressure drop across each channel. The flow is modeled by an incompressible Navier-Stokes-Brinkmann equation and the heat transfer is modeled by a convection-diffusion equation with high Peclet number. Each fluid region is subject to its own set of Navier-Stokes-Brinkmann equations where the Brinkmann term models the other fluid as solid, thereby preventing mixing. A level-set defines the interface that separates the two fluids. The Hamilton-Jacobi equation advects the level-set, allowing for topological changes of the channels. The velocity of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation is defined by the shape derivatives of the cost and constraint functions with respect to normal interface perturbations. Using the CLASH-VLT survey, we assembled an unprecedented sample of 1234 spectroscopically confirmed members in Abell~S1063, finding a dynamically complex structure at z_cl=0.3457 with a velocity dispersion \sigma_v=1380 -32 +26 km s^-1. We investigate cluster environmental and dynamical effects by analysing the projected phase-space diagram and the orbits as a function of galaxy spectral properties. We classify cluster galaxies according to the presence and strength of the [OII] emission line, the strength of the H$\delta$ absorption line, and colours. We investigate the relationship between the spectral classes of galaxies and their position in the projected phase-space diagram. We analyse separately red and blue galaxy orbits. By correlating the observed positions and velocities with the projected phase-space constructed from simulations, we constrain the accretion redshift of galaxies with different spectral types. Passive galaxies are mainly located in the virialised region, while emission-line galaxies are outside r_200, and are accreted later into the cluster. Emission-lines and post-starbursts show an asymmetric distribution in projected phase-space within r_200, with the first being prominent at Delta_v/sigma <~-1.5$, and the second at Delta_v/ sigma >~ 1.5, suggesting that backsplash galaxies lie at large positive velocities. We find that low-mass passive galaxies are accreted in the cluster before the high-mass ones. This suggests that we observe as passives only the low-mass galaxies accreted early in the cluster as blue galaxies, that had the time to quench their star formation. We also find that red galaxies move on more radial orbits than blue galaxies. From Hubble Frontier Fields photometry, and data from the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer on the Very Large Telescope, we build the Fundamental Plane (FP) relation for the early-type galaxies of the cluster Abell S1063. We use this relation to develop an improved strong lensing model of the total mass distribution of the cluster, determining the velocity dispersions of all 222 cluster members included in the model from their measured structural parameters. Fixing the hot gas component from X-ray data, the mass density distributions of the diffuse dark matter haloes are optimised by comparing the observed and model-predicted positions of 55 multiple images of 20 background sources, distributed over the redshift range $0.73-6.11$. We determine the uncertainties on the model parameters with Monte Carlo Markov chains. Compared to previous works, our model allows for the inclusion of a scatter on the relation between the total mass and the velocity dispersion of cluster members, which also shows a shallower slope. We notice a lower statistical uncertainty on the value of some parameters, such as the core radius, of the diffuse mass component of the cluster. Thanks to a new estimate of the stellar mass of all members, we measure the cumulative projected mass profiles out to a radius of 350 kpc, for all baryonic and dark matter components of the cluster. At the outermost radius, we find a baryon fraction of $0.147 \pm 0.002$. We compare the sub-haloes as described by our model with recent hydrodynamical cosmological simulations. We find good agreement in terms of the stellar over total mass fraction.
