Abstract: FAMU is an INFN-led muonic atom physics experiment based at the RIKEN-RAL muon facility at the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source (United Kingdom). The aim of FAMU is to measure the hyperfine splitting in muonic hydrogen to determine the value of the proton Zemach radius with accuracy better than 1%.The experiment has a scintillating-fibre hodoscope for beam monitoring and data normalisation. In order to carry out muon flux estimation, low-rate measurements were performed to extract the single-muon average deposited charge. Then, detector simulation in Geant4 and FLUKA allowed a thorough understanding of the single-muon response function, crucial for determining the muon flux. This work presents the design features of the FAMU beam monitor, along with the simulation and absolute calibration measurements in order to enable flux determination and enable data normalisation.

Abstract: The International Muon Collider Collaboration (IMCC) [1] was established in 2020 following the recommendations of the European Strategy for Particle Physics (ESPP) and the implementation of the European Strategy for Particle Physics-Accelerator R&D Roadmap by the Laboratory Directors Group [2], hereinafter referred to as the the European LDG roadmap. The Muon Collider Study (MuC) covers the accelerator complex, detectors and physics for a future muon collider. In 2023, European Commission support was obtained for a design study of a muon collider (MuCol) [3]. This project started on 1st March 2023, with work-packages aligned with the overall muon collider studies. In preparation of and during the 2021-22 U.S. Snowmass process, the muon collider project parameters, technical studies and physics performance studies were performed and presented in great detail. Recently, the P5 panel [4] in the U.S. recommended a muon collider R&D, proposed to join the IMCC and envisages that the U.S. should prepare to host a muon collider, calling this their "muon shot". Abstract: Accelerated muon beams have been considered for next-generation studies of high-energy lepton-antilepton collisions and neutrino oscillations. However, high-brightness muon beams have not yet been produced. The main challenge for muon acceleration and storage stems from the large phase-space volume occupied by the beam, derived from the muon production mechanism through the decay of pions from proton collisions. Ionization cooling is the technique proposed to decrease the muon beam phase-space volume. Here we demonstrate a clear signal of ionization cooling through the observation of transverse emittance reduction in beams that traverse lithium hydride or liquid hydrogen absorbers in the Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE). The measurement is well reproduced by the simulation of the experiment and the theoretical model. The results shown here represent a substantial advance towards the realization of muon-based facilities that could operate at the energy and intensity frontiers., Comment: 23 pages and 5 figures

Abstract: We report the first experimental determination of the collision-energy dependence of the muon transfer rate from the ground state of muonic hydrogen to oxygen at near-thermal energies. A sharp increase by nearly an order of magnitude in the energy range 0 - 70 meV was found that is not observed in other gases. The results set a reliable reference for quantum-mechanical calculations of low-energy processes with exotic atoms, and provide firm ground for the measurement of the hyperfine splitting in muonic hydrogen and the determination of the Zemach radius of the proton by the FAMU collaboration., Comment: 30 pages, 10 figures

Abstract: Multiple Coulomb Scattering (MCS) is a well known phenomenon occurring when charged particles traverse materials. Measurements of muons traversing low $Z$ materials made in the MuScat experiment showed that theoretical models and simulation codes, such as GEANT4 (v7.0), over-estimated the scattering. The Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE) measured the cooling of a muon beam traversing a liquid hydrogen or lithium hydride (LiH) energy absorber as part of a programme to develop muon accelerator facilities, such as a Neutrino Factory or a Muon Collider. The energy loss and MCS that occur in the absorber material are competing effects that alter the performance of the cooling channel. Therefore measurements of MCS are required in order to validate the simulations used to predict the cooling performance in future accelerator facilities. We report measurements made in the MICE apparatus of MCS using a LiH absorber and muons within the momentum range 160 to 245 MeV/c. The measured RMS scattering width is about 9% smaller than that predicted by the approximate formula proposed by the Particle Data Group. Data at 172, 200 and 240 MeV/c are compared to the GEANT4 (v9.6) default scattering model. Abstract: The quantum interference between the decays of entangled neutral kaons is studied in the process $\phi\rightarrow K_S K_L \rightarrow\pi^+\pi^-\pi^+\pi^-$, which exhibits the characteristic Einstein--Podolsky--Rosen correlations that prevent both kaons to decay into $\pi^+\pi^-$ at the same time. This constitutes a very powerful tool for testing at the utmost precision the quantum coherence of the entangled kaon pair state, and to search for tiny decoherence and CPT violation effects, which may be justified in a quantum gravity framework. The analysed data sample was collected with the KLOE detector at DA$\Phi$NE, the Frascati $\phi$-factory, and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of about 1.7 fb$^{-1}$, i.e. to about $1.7 \times 10^9$ $\phi\rightarrow K_S K_L$ decays produced. From the fit of the observed $\Delta t$ distribution, being $\Delta t$ the difference of the kaon decay times, the decoherence and CPT violation parameters of various phenomenological models are measured with a largely improved accuracy with respect to previous analyses. The results are consistent with no deviation from quantum mechanics and CPT symmetry, while for some parameters the precision reaches the interesting level at which -- in the most optimistic scenarios -- quantum gravity effects might show up. Abstract: Muon beams of low emittance provide the basis for the intense, well-characterised neutrino beams of a neutrino factory and for multi-TeV lepton-antilepton collisions at a muon collider. Abstract: The first measurement of the temperature dependence of the muon transfer rate from muonic hydrogen to oxygen was performed by the FAMU collaboration in 2016. The results provide evidence that the transfer rate rises with the temperature in the range 104-300 K. This paper presents the results of the experiment done in 2018 to extend the measurements towards lower (70 K) and higher (336 K) temperatures. The 2018 results confirm the temperature dependence of the muon transfer rate observed in 2016 and sets firm ground for comparison with the theoretical predictions.

Abstract: Based on an integrated luminosity of 1.61 fb$^{-1}$ $e^+e^-$ collision data collected with the KLOE detector at DA$\Phi$NE, the Frascati $\phi$-factory, a search for the $P$- and $CP$-violating decay $\eta\to\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ has been performed. Radiative $\phi\to\eta\gamma$ decay is exploited to access the $\eta$ mesons. No signal is observed in the $\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ invariant mass spectrum, and the upper limit on the branching fraction at 90\% confidence level is determined to be ${\mathcal B}(\eta\to\pi^{+}\pi^{-})<4.9\times10^{-6}$, which is approximately three times smaller than the previous KLOE result. From the combination of these two measurements we get ${\mathcal B}(\eta\to\pi^{+}\pi^{-}) < 4.4\times10^{-6}$ at 90\% confidence level., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: Based on a sample of 300 million $K_S$ mesons produced in $\phi \to K_L K_S$ decays recorded by the KLOE experiment at the DA$\Phi$NE $e^+e^-$ collider we have measured the branching fraction for the decay $K_S \to \pi \mu \nu$. The $K_S$ mesons are identified by the interaction of $K_L$ mesons in the detector. The $K_S \to \pi \mu \nu$ decays are selected by a boosted decision tree built with kinematic variables and by a time-of-flight measurement. Signal efficiencies are evaluated with data control samples of $K_L \to \pi \mu \nu$ decays. A fit to the reconstructed muon mass distribution finds $7223 \pm 180$ signal events. Normalising to the $K_S \to \pi^+ \pi^-$ decay events the result for the branching fraction is $\mathcal{B}(K_S \to \pi \mu \nu) = (4.56 \pm 0.11_{\rm stat} \pm 0.17_{\rm syst})\times10^{-4}$., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures, Accepted in PLB

Abstract: High-brightness muon beams of energy comparable to those produced by state-of-the-art electron, proton and ion accelerators have yet to be realised. Such beams have the potential to carry the search for new phenomena in lepton-antilepton collisions to extremely high energy and also to provide uniquely well-characterised neutrino beams. Abstract: We report the first measurement of the temperature dependence of muon transfer rate from $\mu$p atoms to oxygen between 100 and 300 K. Data were obtained from the X-ray spectra of delayed events in gaseous target H$_2$/O$_2$ exposed to a muon beam. Based on the data, we determined the muon transfer energy dependence up to 0.1 eV, showing an 8-fold increase in contrast with the predictions of constant rate in the low energy limit. Abstract: The use of accelerated beams of electrons, protons or ions has furthered the development of nearly every scientific discipline. However, high-energy muon beams of equivalent quality have not yet been delivered. Muon beams can be created through the decay of pions produced by the interaction of a proton beam with a target. Such 'tertiary' beams have much lower brightness than those created by accelerating electrons, protons or ions. High-brightness muon beams comparable to those produced by state-of-the-art electron, proton and ion accelerators could facilitate the study of lepton-antilepton collisions at extremely high energies and provide well characterized neutrino beams1-6. Such muon beams could be realized using ionization cooling, which has been proposed to increase muon-beam brightness7,8. Here we report the realization of ionization cooling, which was confirmed by the observation of an increased number of low-amplitude muons after passage of the muon beam through an absorber, as well as an increase in the corresponding phase-space density. The simulated performance of the ionization cooling system is consistent with the measured data, validating designs of the ionization cooling channel in which the cooling process is repeated to produce a substantial cooling effect9-11. The results presented here are an important step towards achieving the muon-beam quality required to search for phenomena at energy scales beyond the reach of the Large Hadron Collider at a facility of equivalent or reduced footprint6.

Abstract: This paper reports on the instrumentation and expertise developed within the INFN-CHNet network for X-ray and neutron imaging, which enable non-invasive identification of materials and production processes in the field of cultural heritage. INFN-CHNet is the network of the Italian National Institute of Nuclear Physics specifically dedicated to the development and application of scientific methods and technologies to cultural heritage. This article focuses on portable MA-XRF scanners, often complemented by additional techniques, PIXE imaging on a newly developed portable accelerator, X-ray radiography and tomography, exploited to their full potential also through the use of portable systems, and neutron radiography and tomography, which require large-scale facilities. In many respects, the information obtained from X-ray and neutron-based methods is complementary, facilitating a comprehensive characterisation of materials, structures, and manufacturing techniques.

Abstract: The Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE) collaboration seeks to demonstrate the feasibility of ionization cooling, the technique by which it is proposed to cool the muon beam at a future neutrino factory or muon collider. The emittance is measured from an ensemble of muons assembled from those that pass through the experiment. A pure muon ensemble is selected using a particle-identification system that can reject efficiently both pions and electrons. The position and momentum of each muon are measured using a high-precision scintillating-fibre tracker in a 4\,T solenoidal magnetic field. This paper presents the techniques used to reconstruct the phase-space distributions and reports the first particle-by-particle measurement of the emittance of the MICE Muon Beam as a function of muon-beam momentum.

Abstract: The main goal of the FAMU experiment is the measurement of the hyperfine splitting (hfs) in the 1S state of muonic hydrogen $\Delta E_{hfs}(\mu^-p)1S$. The physical process behind this experiment is the following: $\mu p$ are formed in a mixture of hydrogen and a higher-Z gas. When absorbing a photon at resonance-energy $\Delta E_{hfs}\approx0.182$~eV, in subsequent collisions with the surrounding $H_2$ molecules, the $\mu p$ is quickly de-excited and accelerated by $\sim2/3$ of the excitation energy. The observable is the time distribution of the K-lines X-rays emitted from the $\mu Z$ formed by muon transfer $(\mu p) +Z \rightarrow (\mu Z)^*+p$, a reaction whose rate depends on the $\mu p$ kinetic energy. The maximal response, to the tuned laser wavelength, of the time distribution of X-ray from K-lines of the $(\mu Z)^*$ cascade indicate the resonance. During the preparatory phase of the FAMU experiment, several measurements have been performed both to validate the methodology and to prepare the best configuration of target and detectors for the spectroscopic measurement. Abstract: We searched for the $\mu^+\mu^-$ decay of a light vector gauge boson, also known as dark photon, in the $e^+ e^- \to \mu^+ \mu^- \gamma_{\rm ISR}$ process by means of the Initial State Radiation (ISR) method. We used 1.93~fb$^{-1}$ of data collected by the KLOE experiment at the DA$\Phi$NE $\phi$-factory. No structures have been observed over the irreducible $\mu^+ \mu^-$ background. A 90\% CL limit on the ratio $\varepsilon^2=\alpha^{\prime}/\alpha$ between the dark coupling constant and the fine structure constant of $ 3\times 10^{-6}-2\times 10^{-7}$ has been set in the dark photon mass region between 519 MeV and 973 MeV. This new limit has been combined with the published result obtained investigating the hypothesis of the dark photon decaying into hadrons in $e^+ e^- \to \pi^+ \pi^- \gamma_{\rm ISR}$ events. The combined 90\% CL limit increases the sensitivity especially in the $\rho-\omega$ interference region and excludes $\varepsilon^2$ greater than $(13-2)\times 10^{-7}$. Abstract: Using 1.63 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected by the KLOE experiment about $7\times 10^4$ $K_S \rightarrow \pi^{\pm}e^{\mp}\nu$ decays have been reconstructed. The measured value of the charge asymmetry for this decay is $A_S = (-4.9 \pm 5.7_{stat} \pm 2.6_{syst}) \times 10^{-3}$, which is almost twice more precise than the previous KLOE result. The combination of these two measurements gives $A_S = (-3.8 \pm 5.0_{stat} \pm 2.6_{syst}) \times 10^{-3}$ and, together with the asymmetry of the $K_L$ semileptonic decay, provides significant tests of the CPT symmetry. Abstract: The three precision measurements of the cross section $\sigma\big(e^+e^-\rightarrow\pi^+\pi^-\gamma(\gamma)\big)$ using initial state radiation by the KLOE collaboration provide an important input for the prediction of the hadronic contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. These measurements are correlated for both statistical and systematic uncertainties and, therefore, the simultaneous use of these measurements requires covariance matrices that fully describe the correlations. We present the construction of these covariance matrices and use them to determine a combined KLOE measurement for $\sigma\big(e^+e^-\rightarrow\pi^+\pi^-\gamma(\gamma)\big)$. We find, from this combination, a two-pion contribution to the muon magnetic anomaly in the energy range $0.10 < s < 0.95$ GeV$^2$ of $a_{\mu}^{\pi^+\pi^-} = (489.8 \pm 1.7_{\rm stat} \pm 4.8_{\rm sys} ) \times 10^{-10}$., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures. Abstract: Muon beams of low emittance provide the basis for the intense, well-characterised neutrino beams necessary to elucidate the physics of flavour at a neutrino factory and to provide lepton-antilepton collisions at energies of up to several TeV at a muon collider. The international Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE) aims to demonstrate ionization cooling, the technique by which it is proposed to reduce the phase-space volume occupied by the muon beam at such facilities. In an ionization-cooling channel, the muon beam passes through a material in which it loses energy. The energy lost is then replaced using RF cavities. The combined effect of energy loss and re-acceleration is to reduce the transverse emittance of the beam (transverse cooling). A major revision of the scope of the project was carried out over the summer of 2014. The revised experiment can deliver a demonstration of ionization cooling. Abstract: We have investigated the in-plane local structure of the Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 superconductor by polarized Fe K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements with temperature. The near neighbor bond distances and their stiffness, measured by polarized EXAFS in two orthogonal directions, are different suggesting in-plane anisotropy of the atomic displacements and local orthorhombicity in the title system. The X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectra reveal anisotropy of valence electronic structure that changes anomalously below ~100 K. The local iron magnetic moment, measured by Fe Kβ X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES), increases below the anomalous temperature and shows a decrease in the vicinity of the superconducting transition temperature (Tc ~ 36 K). The results provide a clear evidence of coupled local lattice, electronic and magnetic degrees of freedom to induce possible nematic fluctuations in an optimally hole doped iron-based superconductor. Abstract: We have measured the running of the effective QED coupling constant $\alpha(s)$ in the time-like region $0.6<\sqrt s< 0.975$ GeV with the KLOE detector at DA$\Phi$NE using the Initial State Radiation process $e^+e^-\to\mu^+ \mu^-\gamma$. It represents the first measurement of the running of $\alpha(s)$ in this energy region. Our results show a more than 5$\sigma$ significance of the hadronic contribution to the running of $\alpha(s)$, which is the strongest direct evidence both in time- and space-like regions achieved in a single measurement. By using the $e^+e^-\to\pi^+\pi^-$ cross section measured by KLOE, the real and imaginary part of the shift $\Delta\alpha(s)$ has been extracted. By a fit of the real part of $\Delta\alpha(s)$ and assuming the lepton universality the branching ratio $BR(\omega\to\mu^+\mu^-) = (6.6\pm1.4_{stat}\pm1.7_{syst})\cdot 10^{-5} $ has been determined., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures, version accepted for publication in Phys. Abstract: The recent interest in a light gauge boson in the framework of an extra U(1) symmetry motivates searches in the mass range below 1 GeV. We present a search for such a particle, the dark photon, in ${\rm e^+ e^-}\rightarrow {\rm U}\gamma$, U$\rightarrow \pi^+\pi^-$ based on 28 million $\mathrm{e^+ e^-} \rightarrow \pi^+ \pi^-\gamma$ events collected at DA$\Phi$NE by the KLOE experiment. The $\pi^+ \pi^-$ production by initial-state radiation compensates for a loss of sensitivity of previous KLOE ${\rm U} \rightarrow \mathrm{e^+ e^-}$, $\mu^+\mu^-$ searches due to the small branching ratios in the $\rho-\omega$ resonance region. We found no evidence for a signal and set a limit at 90\% CL on the mixing strength between the photon and the dark photon, $\varepsilon^2$, in the U mass range between $527$ and $987$~MeV. Abstract: Using $1.6$ fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+ e^-\to\phi\to\eta\gamma$ data collected with the KLOE detector at DA$\Phi$NE, the Dalitz plot distribution for the $\eta \to \pi^+ \pi^- \pi^0$ decay is studied with the world's largest sample of $\sim 4.7 \cdot 10^6$ events. The Dalitz plot density is parametrized as a polynomial expansion up to cubic terms in the normalized dimensionless variables $X$ and $Y$. The experiment is sensitive to all charge conjugation conserving terms of the expansion, including a $gX^2Y$ term. Abstract: A measurement of the vector to pseudoscalar conversion decay $\phi \to \pi^0 e^+e^-$ with the KLOE experiment is presented. A sample of $\sim 9500$ signal events was selected from a data set of 1.7 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} \sim m_{\phi}$ collected at the DA$\Phi$NE $e^+e^-$ collider. These events were used to obtain the first measurement of the transition form factor $| F_{\phi \pi^0}(q^2) |$ and a new measurement of the branching ratio of the decay: $\rm{BR}\,(\phi \to \pi^0 e^+e^-) = (\,1.35 \pm 0.05^{\,\,+0.05}_{\,\,-0.10}\,) \times 10 ^{-5}$. Abstract: Muon beams of low emittance provide the basis for the intense, well-characterized neutrino beams necessary to elucidate the physics of flavor at a neutrino factory and to provide lepton-antilepton collisions at energies of up to several TeV at a muon collider. The international Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE) aims to demonstrate ionization cooling, the technique by which it is proposed to reduce the phase-space volume occupied by the muon beam at such facilities. In an ionization-cooling channel, the muon beam passes through a material in which it loses energy. The energy lost is then replaced using rf cavities. The combined effect of energy loss and reacceleration is to reduce the transverse emittance of the beam (transverse cooling). A major revision of the scope of the project was carried out over the summer of 2014. The revised experiment can deliver a demonstration of ionization cooling. The design of the cooling demonstration experiment will be described together with its predicted cooling performance.

Abstract: The international Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE) will perform a systematic investigation of ionization cooling with muon beams of momentum between 140 and 240\,MeV/c at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory ISIS facility. The measurement of ionization cooling in MICE relies on the selection of a pure sample of muons that traverse the experiment. To make this selection, the MICE Muon Beam is designed to deliver a beam of muons with less than $\sim$1\% contamination. To make the final muon selection, MICE employs a particle-identification (PID) system upstream and downstream of the cooling cell. The PID system includes time-of-flight hodoscopes, threshold-Cherenkov counters and calorimetry. The upper limit for the pion contamination measured in this paper is $f_\pi < 1.4\%$ at 90\% C.L., including systematic uncertainties. Therefore, the MICE Muon Beam is able to meet the stringent pion-contamination requirements of the study of ionization cooling., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

39. Robustness of the $0 -\pi $ transition against compositional and structural ageing in S/F/S heterostructures

Abstract: We have studied the temperature induced $0 -\pi $ thermodynamic transition in Nb/PdNi/Nb Superconductor/Ferromagnetic/Superconductor (SFS) heterostructures by microwave measurements of the superfluid density. We have observed a shift in the transition temperature with the ageing of the heterostructures, suggesting that structural and/or chemical changes took place. Motivated by the electrodynamics findings, we have extensively studied the local structural properties of the samples by means of X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) technique, and the compositional profile by Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS). We found that the samples have indeed changed their properties, in particular for what concerns the interfaces and the composition of the ferromagnetic alloy layer. The structural and compositional data are consistent with the shift of the $0-\pi$ transition toward the behaviour of heterostructures with different F layers. An important emerging indication to the physics of SFS is the weak relevance of the ideality of the interfaces: even in aged samples, with less-than-ideal interfaces, the temperature-induced $0-\pi$ transition is still detectable albeit at a different critical F thickness., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication on Phys. Abstract: The Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE) will perform a detailed study of ionization cooling to evaluate the feasibility of the technique. To carry out this program, MICE requires an efficient particle-identification (PID) system to identify muons. The Electron-Muon Ranger (EMR) is a fully-active tracking-calorimeter that forms part of the PID system and tags muons that traverse the cooling channel without decaying. The detector is capable of identifying electrons with an efficiency of 98.6%, providing a purity for the MICE beam that exceeds 99.8%. Abstract: The existence of a new force beyond the Standard Model is compelling because it could explain several striking astrophysical observations which fail standard interpretations. We searched for the light vector mediator of this dark force, the $\mathrm{U}$ boson, with the KLOE detector at the DA$\Phi$NE $\mathrm{e}^{+}\mathrm{e}^{-}$ collider. Using an integrated luminosity of 1.54 fb$^{-1}$, we studied the process $\mathrm{e}^{+}\mathrm{e}^{-} \to \mathrm{U}\gamma$, with $\mathrm{U} \to \mathrm{e}^{+}\mathrm{e}^{-}$, using radiative-return to search for a resonant peak in the dielectron invariant-mass distribution. We did not find evidence for a signal, and set a 90\%~CL upper limit on the mixing strength between the Standard Model photon and the dark photon, $\varepsilon^2$, at $10^{-6}$--$10^{-4}$ in the 5--520~MeV/c$^2$ mass range.

Abstract: We have studied the vector to pseudoscalar conversion decay phi -> eta e+e-, with eta -> pi0pi0pi0, with the KLOE detector at DAPHNE. The data set of 1.7 fb-1 of e+e- collisions at sqrt(s)~Mphi contains a clear conversion decay signal of ~31,000 events from which we measured a value of BR(phi -> eta e+e-)=(1.075+-0.007+-0.038)x10-4. The same sample is used to determine the transition form factor by a fit to the e+e- invariant mass spectrum, obtaining b(phi eta) =(1.17 +- 0.10 + 0.07) GeV-2, that improves by a factor of five the precision of the previous measurement and is in good agreement with VMD expectations., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, submitted to PLB

Abstract: We have searched for a light vector boson $U$, the possible carrier of a "dark force", with the KLOE detector at the DA$\Phi$NE \epm\ collider, motivated by astrophysical evidence for the presence of dark matter in the universe. Using \epm\ collisions collected with an integrated luminosity of $239.3$~pb$^{-1}$, we look for a dimuon mass peak in the reaction \epm\to$\mu^+ \mu^-$\gam, corresponding to the decay $U\to\mu^+\mu^-$. We find no evidence for a $U$ vector boson signal. We set a 90\% CL upper limit for the mixing parameter squared between the photon and the $U$ boson of 1.6$\times$10$^{-5}$ to 8.6$\times$10$^{-7}$ for the mass region $520

Abstract: Neutral kaon pairs produced in phi decays in anti-symmetric entangled state can be exploited to search for violation of CPT symmetry and Lorentz invariance. We present an analysis of the CP-violating process phi->K_S K_L->pi+pi-pi+pi- based on 1.7 fb-1 of data collected by the KLOE experiment at the Frascati phi-factory DAFNE. The data are used to perform a measurement of the CPT-violating parameters Delta_amu for neutral kaons in the contest of the Standard Model Extension framework. The parameters measured in the reference frame of the fixed stars are: Delta_ao = (-6.0 +- 7.7_{stat} +- 3.1_{syst}) x 10^{-18} GeV Delta_ax = ( 0.9 +- 1.5_{stat} +- 0.6_{syst}) x 10^{-18} GeV Delta_ay = (-2.0 +- 1.5_{stat} +- 0.5_{syst}) x 10^{-18} GeV Delta_az = ( 3.1 +- 1.7_{stat} +- 0.5_{syst}) x 10^{-18} GeV These are presently the most precise measurements in the quark sector of the Standard Model Extension., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, added few typo corrections

Abstract: Beam hodoscopes based on 32 × 32 square polystyrene scintillating fibres along X/Y, having section 3 × 3 mm2 or 1 × 1 mm2, have been designed and characterised for monitoring low-energy charged particle beams. Each fibre is read by a SiPM and the signal is digitised and analysed off-line. Hodoscopes were exposed to the 60 MeV/c negative muon beam at Port 1 of the RIKEN-RAL muon facility (UK), where they proved to be good to determine the beam profile and its intensity, via a calibration with cosmic muons. Furthermore, the exposition to the calibrated single-proton beam at CNAO (Italy), in the momentum range between 340 MeV/c and 690 MeV/c, provided further calibration in dE/dx and showed the feasibility of the detector as an instrument for proton beam characterisation too. These hodoscopes will be used as negative muon beam monitors for the FAMU experiment at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, but the possibility of using them as a beam monitor in hadron therapy has also been investigated.
