Abstract

This roadmap includes the perspectives and visions of leading researchers in the key areas of flexible and printable electronics. The covered topics are broadly organized by the device technologies (sections 1–9), fabrication techniques (sections 10–12), and design and modeling approaches (sections 13 and 14) essential to the future development of new applications leveraging flexible electronics (FE). The interdisciplinary nature of this field involves everything from fundamental scientific discoveries to engineering challenges; from design and synthesis of new materials via novel device design to modelling and digital manufacturing of integrated systems. As such, this roadmap aims to serve as a resource on the current status and future challenges in the areas covered by the roadmap and to highlight the breadth and wide-ranging opportunities made available by FE technologies.

2. Effect of metal clusters on the swelling of gold-fluorocarbon-polymer composite films

Abstract

We have investigated the phenomenon of swelling due to acetone diffusion in fluorocarbon polymer films doped with different gold concentrations below the percolation threshold. The presence of the gold clusters in the polymer is shown to improve the mixing between the fluorocarbon polymer and the acetone, which is not a good solvent for this kind of polymers. In order to explain the experimental results the stoichiometry and the morphology of the polymer--metal system have been studied and a modified version of the Flory--Huggins model has been developed.

Abstract

In the present study, Au-surfactant core-shell colloidal nanoparticles (NPs) with controlled dimension and composition were synthesized by sacrificial anode electrolysis. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed that Au NPs core diameter is between 8 and 12 nm, as a function of the electrosynthesis conditions. Moreover, surface spectroscopic characterization by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis confirmed the presence of nanosized gold phase. Controlled amounts of Au NPs were then deposited electrophoretically on carbon nanotube (CNT) networked films. The resulting hybrid materials were morphologically and chemically characterized using TEM, SEM (scanning electron microscopy) and XPS analyses, which revealed the presence of nanoscale gold, and its successful deposition on CNTs. Au NP/CNT networked films were tested as active layers in a two-pole resistive NO2 sensor for sub-ppm detection in the temperature range of 100–200 °C. Au NP/CNT exhibited a p-type response with a decrease in the electrical resistance upon exposure to oxidizing NO2 gas and an increase in resistance upon exposure to reducing gases (e.g. NH3). It was also demonstrated that the sensitivity of the Au NP/CNT-based sensors depends on Au loading; therefore, the impact of the Au loading on gas sensing performance was investigated as a function of the working temperature, gas concentration and interfering gases.

A study of the correlation between the morphological structure of the active semiconductor thin film and the response to the vapor is presented. This study was carried out by combining the measurement of the transient source - drain current of the transistor under vapor flow with the morphological characterization of the organic thin films by transmission electron microscopy.

Abstract

Gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs) are electrochemically synthesized in the presence of tetra-alkyl-ammonium stabilizers and used as active element in Field Effect capacitive gas sensors. Before use, the sensing area is treated by a relatively mild annealing procedure aimed to partially remove the organic stabilizer without loosing the nano-structured character of the particles. Both pristine and annealed materials have been subjected to a spectroscopic and morphological characterization (by means of UV-Vis, XPS, TEM, SEM techniques). Preliminary results on the application of AuNPs as gate material for NOx sensing are reported. The sensor is able to detect NOx with appreciable selectivity and low response towards the other tested gases (C3H6, CO, H2, NH3).
