Semen cryopreservation is one of the most important reproduction techniques in the livestock and poultry industry. Cryopreservation induces cold stress, generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) and oxidative stress causing structural and biochemical damages in sperm. In this study, we evaluated the effects of the hydroxytyrosol (HT), as an antioxidant, at the concentrations of 0, 25, 50, and 100 μg/mL on post‐thaw semen quality metrics in rooster. Semen samples were collected twice a week from 10 roosters (29 weeks), processed and frozen according to experimental groups. Different quality parameters, including total motility, progressive motility, viability, morphology, membrane integrity, and malondialdehyde were measured after thawing. Results showed that 25 and 50 μg/mL of HT produced the highest percentage of total motility (51.01 ± 2.19 and 50.15 ± 2.19, respectively) and progressive motility (35.74 ± 1.34 and 35.15 ± 1.34, respectively), membrane integrity (48.00 ± 2.18 and 46.75 ± 2.18, respectively) as well as viability (53.00 ± 2.17 and 52.50 ± 2.17, respectively) compared with the other groups (p <.05). The group with 25 μg/mL of HT showed the lowest significant (p <.05) MDA concentration (1.81 ± 0.25). Our results showed that the effect of HT was not dose‐dependent and optimum concentration of HT could improve functional parameters of rooster sperm after freezing–thawing. Background: Salmonellosis is one of the important diseases in the poultry industry, which also causes public health concerns. Objectives: We studied the effects of enrofloxacin and herbal medicines on growth performance, blood parameters, meat oxidation, and cecal microbial population in broilers challenged with Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (ST). Methods: A total of 240 one-day-old (male) Ross 308 broiler chicks were randomly divided into 6 groups: negative and positive control, enrofloxacin, and three herbal medicines (A, B, and C) containing different proportions of cinnamon, thyme, licorice, and marjoram extracts with compounds of organic acids. The dosage of enrofloxacin and A, B, and C herbal medicines were 1, 1, 1, and 2 mL/L in drinking water, respectively, prescribed from days 16 to 21. On day 10, all groups except negative control were challenged with 1 mL suspension containing 1×107 CFU/mL ST. Performance traits were measured in intervals of 1-10, 11-24, 25-42, and 1-42 days. Blood parameters, meat oxidation, and cecal microbial population were measured on day 21. Results: Among the challenged groups, medicine C and enrofloxacin showed the lowest levels of Salmonella infection (P<0.05). Medicine B had a better effect on performance traits (P<0.05). Medicine A had the lowest amount of malondialdehyde in meat. Medicines A and B caused the lowest cholesterol and triglyceride concentration in serum (P<0.05). Conclusion: The above-mentioned herbal medicines can be used as beneficial additives in poultry nutrition to improve growth performance, reduce the Salmonella population in the gastrointestinal tract, and cholesterol, triglycerides, and meat oxidation. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of two aflatoxins (AFs) sources for experimental induction of aflatoxicosis in ducklings. Dietary supplementation of aflatoxincontaminated grounded rice grains previously was cultured by Aspergillus parasiticus and dietary supplementation of aflatoxin methanolic extract of contaminated rice grains. A total number of 18 four-day-old ducklings were treated with varying sources of AFs. Treatments included: A: Control (basal diet without AFs), B: Contaminated feed with 0.20 mg kg-1 AFs (ground rice grains), C: Contaminated feed with 0.20 mg kg-1 AFs (methanol extract of contaminated rice grains). Results showed a significant decrease in serum levels of total protein, albumin, glucose, triglyceride, cholesterol, HDL, LDL and creatinine. The serum's hepatic enzymes levels were not affected in AFs-treated groups but lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) concentration increased by the two AFs sources. The relative weight of the liver and spleen was significantly increased in AFs-fed groups. Histopathological liver examination showed the vacuolar degeneration with small and large lipid droplets in hepatocytes in the AFscontaminated groups. Dietary AFs resulted in a significant decrease of villus height, villus width and villus surface area of the small intestine compared to the control group. In conclusion, the results showed that the induction of experimental aflatoxicosis via two investigated AFs sources had slight differences concerning the studied parameters. Infections associated with avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) cause severe economic losses to the poultry industry. The study presented herein investigated the in vivo performance of a single phage with prolonged in vivo and in vitro survivability alone or in combination with 3 other selected phages in treating colibacillosis in quails. Japanese quails (N = 360) were randomly assigned to 6 treatment groups with 4 replicate pens. Birds from the control groups (groups I, II, and III) were treated with 200 μL sterile PBS (pH 7.4), 200 μL of the selected phage (1010 pfu; TM3) or a cocktail of 4 phages (TM3 plus TM1, TM2, and TM4), respectively. Groups IV, V, and VI were challenged with 200 μL E. coli (108 cfu; O78:K80 and O2:K1) and treated with i.m. injection of 200 μL sterile PBS, phage TM3, or cocktail of 4 phages, respectively. Based on the results of the present study, the total mortality rate decreased from 46.6% in the untreated E. coli -challenged group to 26.5% and 13.6% in the E. coli- challenged group treated with single phage or phage cocktail, respectively. The body weights of birds treated with the phage cocktail were higher than the body weights of untreated birds on days 7, 14, and 21 post-challenge (P < 0.05). In addition, total viable cell counts of E. coli in the lungs of birds treated with the phage cocktail were lower than those of birds treated with phage TM3 on days 3 and 10 post-challenge (P < 0.05). Moreover, the incidence and severity of lesions in lungs, heart, and liver were found to be significantly less in the E. coli - challenged group treated with the phage cocktail. In conclusion, this study indicates that a phage cocktail may be more efficient in treating colibacillosis than a single phage possibly due to a synergistic effect between the individual phages. According to various reports of beneficial effects of medicinal plants on the performance of broiler chickens and less extensively studies in laying poultries, this study was conducted to find an appropriate and harmless feed additive to enhance the quality and quantity of poultry eggs. The effect of three herbal extracts on quantity and quality of eggs, blood parameters, hatchability, intestinal bacterial population, and intestinal morphology in laying Japanese quail were investigated. The study was applied with 64, ten-week old laying Japanese quails for 8 weeks. The experiment was a completely randomized design with 4 treatments, 4 replications and 4 birds per replicate (the ratio of male to female 1:3). Experimental treatments involved: Control, with no additive in drinking water; chamomile extract; wild mint extract; and oregano extract. Herbal extracts were added 1 mL/L drinking water. The three treatments showed no significant effect on productivity, egg mass, FCR, egg weight, feed intake and qualitative indices of eggs; however, the herbal extracts specially the chamomile extract reduced the cholesterol of eggs (P<0.05). Herbal extracts showed no significantly effects on the hatchability of fertile eggs. Oregano extract showed the best effect on reduction of the intestinal bacterial population and increase the villus height in ileum (P<0.05). Chamomile extract by reducing the yolk cholesterol can improve the egg market's popularity, and oregano extract by reducing the number of pathogenic bacteria and improving the villus height in ileum can be considered as a beneficial and low-risk additive for laying poultries. This study was conducted to assess the effects of feed form (FF), particle size (PS), and pellet binder (PB) on performance, digestive tract parameters, intestinal morphology, and cecal microflora populations in broiler chicks. Two FF (mash and pellet), two feed PS (fine and coarse), and two levels of PB (0 and 3%) were evaluated in a completely randomized design with a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. A total of 256 one-day-old male Ross 308 chicks were allocated into 8 treatments consisting of 8 replicates (4 birds/cage) with equal weight from 25 to 42 d of age. The results showed a three-way interaction among FF, PS, and PB for growth performance in broilers. The growth performance parameters were significantly improved by feeding the pellet-coarse PS-3% PB diet in comparison to the other treatments (P < 0.05). Birds fed pelleted diets had lower relative weight of the gizzard and pancreas, goblet cell (GC) number of the duodenum, crypt depth (CD) of the jejunum, higher villus height (VH) of the duodenum, and cecal spore-forming bacteria population (P < 0.05). Coarse PS resulted in lower jejunum CD and higher cecal count of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and spore-forming bacteria (P < 0.05). Adding PB significantly improved pellet durability index (PDI) (P < 0.05). In addition, coarse PS-3% PB diets had higher pellet hardness. Also, adding PB to diets significantly (P < 0.05) decreased cecal spore-forming bacteria population. Pellet-coarse PS-3% PB diets fed broilers had a lower (P < 0.05) cecal Clostridium spp. bacterial population. The main factors had no significant effect (P > 0.05) on cecal Coliform spp. levels. Birds fed pellet-3% PB diets had higher VH:CD ratio both in the duodenum and jejunum, and those fed mash-3% PB diets had significantly (P < 0.05) lower VH in the jejunum than other treatments. Overall, pellet-coarse PS-3% PB diets improved growth performance through the positive changes on intestinal morphology of broilers under short-term conditioning (STC). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of dietary n-3: n-6 fatty acid (FA) ratios and vitamin E (vitE) on the semen quality, FA composition, hormonal responses, and reproductive performance of aged roosters. Thirty-six Ross broiler breeder roosters were assigned to a 3 × 2 factorial design with 3 n-3: n-6 FA ratios (0.09, 0.16, and 0.23) based on the inclusion of 3 oil sources (canola, canola/fish, and fish) and 2 vitE levels (0 and 200 mg/kg). During the 60 d of treatment, semen parameters, FAs composition of sperm, lipid peroxidation, and hormonal responses were monitored. Reproductive performance using artificial insemination was also evaluated at the end of experiment (on day 60). Results showed that the 0.16 and 0.23 dietary ratios increased docosahexaenoic acid and n-3 polyunsaturated FA and decreased docosatetraenoic acid and arachidonic acid in rooster sperm (P  < 0.05). The 0.16 dietary ratio supplemented with 200 mg vitE improved total sperm motility (P  < 0.05) than the 0.09 and 0.23 ratios, both with and without vitE. Progressive motility, membrane functionality, and viability were significantly (P  < 0.05) improved in the 0.16 and 0.23 ratios supplemented with vitE. The highest concentration of testosterone was observed in the roosters fed a diet ratio of 0.16 (P  < 0.05). Compared with no supplementation of vitE, 200 mg/kg vitE reduced the lipid peroxidation of rooster sperm (P  < 0.05). In the artificial insemination, the higher significant percentage of fertility rate (P  = 0.02) was observed in the 0.16 ratio group that was supplemented with vitE compared to other groups. It can be concluded that supplementation of aged roosters' diet with 0.16 ratio of n-3: n-6 can be a beneficial strategy for improvement of their fertility. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
