Longhorn beetles (Cerambycidae) are a very diverse group whose species vary greatly in morphology and behaviour, particularly in diel activity. The type genus Cerambyx includes two large oak‐ling sympatric species (Cerambyx cerdo and Cerambyx welensii) that exhibit a crepuscular/nocturnal (dim‐light) lifestyle, but their actual diel activity remains largely unclear.We used phototraps in the wild to assess if diel activity depended on either species, sex or annual meteorology. Phototraps were highly effective, and the imaged activities were representative of beetles' life, including interactions with some vertebrate species.Both longhorns exhibited roughly similar crepuscular/nocturnal behaviour, with daytime activity being usually residual or erratic. Diel activity increased sharply just before dusk, peaked between dusk and early dark night (23:00–2:00 h), and then dropped progressively until disappearing at dawn. Diel activity was sexually dimorphic in C. welensii, as in some years females tended to be active earlier than males.Distinctly, in 2022, the warmest and driest year recorded in the study area, diel activity curves were flatter and wider, with C. cerdo activity increasing in the late afternoon (19:00–21:30 h) and C. welensii in the second half of the night (3:00–6:00 h). Furthermore, both species boosted daytime activity (diurnality) by more than three times, and diurnality also increased over the season that year.We finally hypothesise that, under the current climate change scenario, extreme droughts impact diel activity in these species, particularly boosting diurnality, in an attempt to locate water/food sources to counteract body dehydration. Increased female age at mating is considered a detrimental factor on reproductive output and fitness in insects, even if the impact is rather species specific. The effect of delayed mating on reproductive output has been widely studied in pest species controlled with mating disruption, as if the method is not fully effective in suppressing matings, it could still delay them, limiting female fitness and pest damage. Female mating delay, however, may also occur in natural habitats without invoking mating disruption. We studied the effect of female delayed mating in Cerambyx welensii (Küster) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), an oak‐living sapro‐xylophagous longhorn beetle considered a critical factor in oak decline. Several life history and ecological traits may potentially delay mating, including low abundance, (re)colonisation processes, sexual communication channel, host‐produced kairomones, operational sex ratio, reproductive interference and adverse weather conditions. We conducted laboratory tests to assess the impact of mating delays (0‐, 10‐, 20‐ and 30‐day post‐emergence) on reproductive output. Data showed that mating delay until at least 20 days of age had a limited effect on mating success, lifetime fecundity, longevity and fertility. The daily fecundity pattern depended on mating delay, and virgin females showed ovarian retention. We conclude that C. welensii females have evolved physiological adaptations to overcome mating delays and optimise fitness. We discuss our results from an evolutionary perspective, considering specifically the risk of early predation and egg‐laying time limitation. We hypothesise that unpredictable recurrent stochastic variation in male availability could act as an additional driver selecting for synovigeny in this longhorn species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Longhorn beetles are often categorized as diurnal, crepuscular or nocturnal depending on the diel (day-night) time window at which adults are active. A precise knowledge of the diel activity pattern in these species is essential to understand the selective forces involved in, and the adaptations resulting from, the evolution of circadian rhythms. The genus Cerambyx includes both diurnal and crepuscular/nocturnal species. In the case of Cerambyx miles Bonelli, 1812, a usually scarce and localised species, diel activity remains poorly understood. While for some authors this longhorn is diurnal, for others it is crepuscular/nocturnal. In order to resolve this historical discrepancy, we studied the diel activity of C. miles in the wild in 2020 and 2021 using ad hoc devised phototraps (with and without capture) and we examine to what extent our field results conformed to literature. Our data (n = 139 captures/sightings) show that about 94% of the activity of C. miles is diurnal, 5% crepuscular, and less than 1% nocturnal. Diel activity started at dawn, raised progressively during the morning, peaked in the late afternoon (17.00-20.00 h) and declined abruptly just before dusk. Our field results were not consistent with literature data (n = 103 diel activity records retrieved from 79 references), in which diel activity was scored as 60% diurnal, 26% crepuscular and 14% nocturnal. The mode of inheritance of polyandry was studied in the laboratory in Spodoptera exigua Hubner, the beet army worm. Polyandry in S. exigua is a polygenic, autosomal heritable trait. Additive genetic variance is available for selection for female mating frequency.

BACKGROUND Geographic variation in male response to sex pheromone lures has been studied in the field in a number of moth species. However, only a few studies have investigated geographic variation in female calling and sex pheromone under field conditions. For an effective field implementation of sex pheromone lures, it is essential to know the local sex pheromone blend and local timing of sexual communication. We investigated the level and extent of geographic variation in the sexual communication of the important agricultural pest Helicoverpa armigera (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae) in three continents. RESULTS: We found there is no genetic variation in the calling behavior of H. armigera. In the female sex pheromone, we found more between‐population variation than within‐population variation. In male response experiments, we found geographic variation as well. Strikingly, when adding the antagonistic compound Z11‐16:OAc to the pheromone blend of H. armigera, significantly fewer males were caught in Australia and China, but not in Spain. This variation is likely not only due to local environmental conditions, such as photoperiod and temperature, but also to the presence of other closely related species with which communication interference may occur. Conclusion: Finding geographic variation in both the female sexual signal and the male response in this pest calls for region‐specific pheromone lures. Our study shows that the analysis of geographic variation in moth female sex pheromones as well as male responses is important for effectively monitoring pest species that occur around the globe. © 2020 The Authors. Adult size is the trait most closely correlated with reproductive output in insects, but may also have important selective implications determining additional fitness gains. In longhorn beetles, adult size-mediated ultimate benefits may arise from mate choice, male antennal spread width or male fighting for mates. In this paper, we examined factors potentially shaping adult size of Cerambyx welensii Küster (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), an emergent oak (Quercus Linnaeus; Fagaceae) pest. Sex ratio and adult length/weight allometric relationships were also explored. Overwintering adults were collected inside oaks in Extremadura (southwestern Spain) during 2011–2017 to ensure that larval development was completed in the wild. Sex, host species, and wood quality affected adult size, though some interactions occurred and among-host differences were weak. Adults collected inside older trees and wider branches were significantly larger. Adult size was unaffected by either elevation, aspect, or population density. There was a robust allometric scaling in both sexes between elytral/adult length and weight, females being heavier than males and males longer than females when adults were large. Female-biased sex ratios occurred in old/veteran trees and in dense/crowded larval populations. We discuss these results from an evolutionary perspective considering the potential impact of C. welensii adult size on population dynamics and management tactics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

1. Cerambyx welensii ( Cw) and Cerambyx cerdo ( Cc) are two large saproxylic beetles living on Quercus trees in the Western Palearctic whose current pest and legal status differs markedly. Cw is an emerging pest involved in oak decline while Cc is an internationally protected species. 2. Acquiring knowledge of the ecology, demography and behaviour of Cw and Cc in forests harbouring mixed populations is a demanding task to optimise their management or protection. Here, we report the results of a mark-recapture study on the flight behaviour and dispersal potential of both species in holm oak open woodlands. 3. Average flights, dispersal rates and diffusion models were remarkably similar in Cw and Cc, reflecting a low-dispersal tendency and sedentary behaviour. However, a subset of adults in both species exhibited a huge propensity to disperse and flew more than 1 km. An aggregated distribution of dispersal distances suggested that a behavioural polymorphism might underlie the flight pattern. 4. Adults moved preferentially in those spatial directions with neighbouring trees, while prevailing winds did not significantly affect dispersal patterns. The main interspecific differences were as follows: (i) Cc performed longer crosswind flights than Cw on windy days; (ii) Cc tended to fly farther than Cw at low temperatures; and (iii) adult feeding improved dispersal but only in small Cw females. Moon phase did not affect flight activity. 5. The results are discussed in an effort to interpret how these ecological and behavioural differences might shape the life history of both congeneric species when they live in sympatry in dehesa woodlands.
