Studying conditional independence among many variables with few observations is a challenging task. Gaussian Graphical Models (GGMs) tackle this problem by encouraging sparsity in the precision matrix through $l_q$ regularization with $q\leq1$. However, most GMMs rely on the $l_1$ norm because the objective is highly non-convex for sub-$l_1$ pseudo-norms. In the frequentist formulation, the $l_1$ norm relaxation provides the solution path as a function of the shrinkage parameter $\lambda$. In the Bayesian formulation, sparsity is instead encouraged through a Laplace prior, but posterior inference for different $\lambda$ requires repeated runs of expensive Gibbs samplers. Here we propose a general framework for variational inference with matrix-variate Normalizing Flow in GGMs, which unifies the benefits of frequentist and Bayesian frameworks. As a key improvement on previous work, we train with one flow a continuum of sparse regression models jointly for all regularization parameters $\lambda$ and all $l_q$ norms, including non-convex sub-$l_1$ pseudo-norms. Within one model we thus have access to (i) the evolution of the posterior for any $\lambda$ and any $l_q$ (pseudo-) norm, (ii) the marginal log-likelihood for model selection, and (iii) the frequentist solution paths through simulated annealing in the MAP limit., Comment: NeurIPS23 version

We introduce Lagrangian Flow Networks (LFlows) for modeling fluid densities and velocities continuously in space and time. By construction, the proposed LFlows satisfy the continuity equation, a PDE describing mass conservation in its differentiable form. Our model is based on the insight that solutions to the continuity equation can be expressed as time-dependent density transformations via differentiable and invertible maps. This follows from classical theory of the existence and uniqueness of Lagrangian flows for smooth vector fields. Hence, we model fluid densities by transforming a base density with parameterized diffeomorphisms conditioned on time. The key benefit compared to methods relying on numerical ODE solvers or PINNs is that the analytic expression of the velocity is always consistent with changes in density. Furthermore, we require neither expensive numerical solvers, nor additional penalties to enforce the PDE. LFlows show higher predictive accuracy in density modeling tasks compared to competing models in 2D and 3D, while being computationally efficient. As a real-world application, we model bird migration based on sparse weather radar measurements.

4. Analyzing the time spectrum of supernova neutrinos to constrain their effective mass or Lorentz Invariance Violation

We analyze the expected arrival time spectrum of supernova neutrinos using simulated luminosity and compute the expected number of events in future detectors such as the DUNE Far Detector and Hyper-Kamiokande. We develop a general method using minimum square statistics that can compute the sensitivity to any variable affecting neutrino time of flight. We apply this method in two different situations: First, we compare the time spectrum changes due to different neutrino mass values to put limits on electron (anti)neutrino effective mass. Second, we constrain Lorentz invariance violation through the mass scale, $M_{QG}$, at which it would occur. We consider two main neutrino detection techniques: 1. DUNE-like liquid argon TPC, for which the main detection channel is $\nu_e +\, ^{40}\mbox{Ar} \rightarrow e^- +\, ^{40}\mbox{K}^*$, related to the supernova neutronization burst; and 2. HyperK-like water Cherenkov detector, for which $\bar \nu_e + p \rightarrow e^+ + n$ is the main detection channel. We consider a fixed supernova distance of 10~kpc and two different masses of the progenitor star: (i) 15~$M_\odot$ with neutrino emission time up to 0.3~s and (ii) 11.2~$M_\odot$ with neutrino emission time up to 10~s. The best mass limits at 3$\sigma$ are for $\mathcal{O}(1)$~eV. For $\nu_e$, the best limit comes from a DUNE-like detector if the mass ordering happens to be inverted. For $\bar \nu_e$, the best limit comes from a HyperK-like detector. The best limit for the Lorentz invariance violation mass scale at the 3$\sigma$ level considering a superluminal or subluminal effect is $M_{QG} \gtrsim 10^{13}$~GeV ($M_{QG} \gtrsim 5 \times 10^{5}$~GeV) for linear (quadratic) energy dependence., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, 7 tables. A method was proposed to develop pyroxene-based glass-ceramic glazes. First, was studied, by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, the effect of several additives in the monophasic crystallization of pyroxene from glasses in the CaO•MgO•Al2O3•SiO2 quaternary system. After, it was determined the sinterization intervals and thermal properties of the glasses, by hot stage microscopy and dilatometry. Finally, some studied glasses were chosen and glazed tiles were developed under fast firing wall- and floor-tile industrial cycles. The results proved the reproducibility of the microstructural characteristics obtained in the previous study with glasses. The measurement of different mechanical properties confirmed their potential application in nowadays industrial processing.En este trabajo se presenta una metodología para desarrollar vidriados vitrocerámicos basados en piroxeno. En primer lugar se ha estudiado, mediante difracción de rayos X y microscopía electrónica de barrido, el efecto de diferentes aditivos en la cristalización monofásica de piroxeno a partir de vidrios en el sistema CaO•MgO•Al2O3•SiO2. Posteriormente, se han determinado los intervalos de sinterización y características térmicas de los vidrios, mediante microscopía de calefacción y dilatometría. Finalmente, con los vidrios seleccionados se han preparado piezas esmaltadas mediante tratamientos térmicos utilizados habitualmente en la industria de pavimento y revestimiento, comprobando la reproducibilidad de las características microestructurales obtenidas en los estudios iniciales en vidrios. Se han medido sobre las piezas esmaltadas diferentes propiedades que permiten confirmar su potencial aplicación en procesados industriales de monococción y/o bicocción.

In periodically-driven quantum systems, resonances can induce exotic nonequilibrium behavior and new phases of matter without static analog. We report on the emergence of fractional and integer resonances in a broad class of many-body Hamiltonians with a modulated hopping with a frequency that is either a fraction or an integer of the on-site interaction. We contend that there is a fundamental difference between these resonances when interactions bring the system to a Floquet prethermal state. Second-order processes dominate the dynamics in the fractional resonance case, leading to less entanglement and more localized quantum states than in the integer resonance case dominated by first-order processes. We demonstrate the dominating emergence of fractional resonances using the Magnus expansion of the effective Hamiltonian and quantify their effects on the many-body dynamics via quantum states' von Neumann entropy and Loschmidt echo. Our findings reveal novel features of the nonequilibrium quantum many-body system, such as the coexistence of Floquet prethermalization and localization, that may allow to development of quantum memories for quantum technologies and quantum information processing., Comment: 17 pages, 16 figures. The field of energy forecasting has attracted many researchers from different fields (e.g., meteorology, data sciences, mechanical or electrical engineering) over the last decade. Solar forecasting is a fast-growing subdomain of energy forecasting. Despite several previous attempts, the methods and measures used for verification of deterministic (also known as single-valued or point) solar forecasts are still far from being standardized, making forecast analysis and comparison difficult. To analyze and compare solar forecasts, the well-established Murphy–Winkler framework for distribution-oriented forecast verification is recommended as a standard practice. This framework examines aspects of forecast quality, such as reliability, resolution, association, or discrimination, and analyzes the joint distribution of forecasts and observations, which contains all time-independent information relevant to verification. To verify forecasts, one can use any graphical display or mathematical/statistical measure to provide insights and summarize the aspects of forecast quality. The majority of graphical methods and accuracy measures known to solar forecasters are specific methods under this general framework. Additionally, measuring the overall skillfulness of forecasters is also of general interest. The use of the root mean square error (RMSE) skill score based on the optimal convex combination of climatology and persistence methods is highly recommended. By standardizing the accuracy measure and reference forecasting method, the RMSE skill score allows—with appropriate caveats—comparison of forecasts made using different models, across different locations and time periods.

ProtoDUNE-SP is the single-phase DUNE Far Detector prototype that is under construction and will be operated at the CERN Neutrino Platform (NP) starting in 2018. ProtoDUNE-SP, a crucial part of the DUNE effort towards the construction of the first DUNE 10-kt fiducial mass far detector module (17 kt total LAr mass), is a significant experiment in its own right. With a total liquid argon (LAr) mass of 0.77 kt, it represents the largest monolithic single-phase LArTPC detector to be built to date. Martian meteorites can provide valuable information about past environmental conditions on Mars. Allan Hills 84001 formed more than 4 Gyr ago, and owing to its age and long exposure to the Martian environment, this meteorite has features that may record early processes. These features include a highly fractured texture, gases trapped during one or more impact events or during formation of the rock, and spherical Fe-Mg-Ca carbonates. Here we have concentrated on providing new insights into the context of these carbonates using a range of techniques to explore whether they record multiple precipitation and shock events. The petrographic features and compositional properties of these carbonates indicate that at least two pulses of Mg- and Fe-rich solutions saturated the rock. Those two generations of carbonates can be distinguished by a very sharp change in compositions, from being rich in Mg and poor in Fe and Mn, to being poor in Mg and rich in Fe and Mn. This document presents the Conceptual Design Report (CDR) put forward by an international neutrino community to pursue the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment at the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF/DUNE), a groundbreaking science experiment for long-baseline neutrino oscillation studies and for neutrino astrophysics and nucleon decay searches. The DUNE far detector will be a very large modular liquid argon time-projection chamber (LArTPC) located deep underground, coupled to the LBNF multi-megawatt wide-band neutrino beam. DUNE will also have a high-resolution and high-precision near detector.

In this work we study a scalar field dark matter model with mass of the order of 100 MeV. We assume dark matter is produced in the process $e^-+e^+\to \phi +\phi^*+\gamma$, that, in fact, could be a background for the standard process $e^-+e^+\to \nu +\bar\nu+\gamma$ extensively studied at LEP. We constrain the chiral couplings, $C_L$ and $C_R$, of the dark matter with electrons through an intermediate fermion of mass $m_F=100$ GeV and obtain $C_L=0.1(0.25)$ and $C_R=0.25(0.1)$ for the best fit point of our $\chi^2$ analysis. We also analyze the potential of ILC to detect this scalar dark matter for two configurations: (i) center of mass energy $\sqrt{s}=500$ GeV and luminosity $\mathcal{L}=250$ fb$^{-1}$, and (ii) center of mass energy $\sqrt{s}=1$ TeV and luminosity $\mathcal{L}=500$ fb$^{-1}$. The differences of polarized beams are also explored to better study the chiral couplings., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures and 1 table. New references added and improvements in the text. This work presents an upper bound on the neutrino mass using the emission of $\nu_e$ from the neutronization burst of a core collapsing supernova at 10~kpc of distance and a progenitor star of 15~M$_\odot$. The calculations were done considering a 34 kton Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber similar to the Far Detector proposal of the Long Baseline Neutrino Experiment (LBNE). We have performed a Monte Carlo simulation for the number of events integrated in 5~ms bins. Our results are $m_\nu<2.71$~eV and $0.18~\mbox{eV}
