Abstract

Abstract: Correlation coefficientsand linear regression values computed from group averages can differ from correlation coefficients and linear regression values computed using individual scores. This observation known as the ecological fallacy often assumes that all the individual scores are available from a population. In many situations, one must use a sample from the larger population. In such cases, the computed correlation coefficient and linear regression values will depend on the sample that is chosen and the underlying sampling distribution.The sampling distribution of correlation coefficients and linear regression values for group averages will be identical to the sampling distribution for individuals for normally distributed variables for random samples drawn from infinitely large continuous distributions.However, data that is acquired in practice is often acquired when sampling without replacement from a finite population. Our objective is to demonstrate through Monte Carlo simulations that thesampling distributions forcorrelation and linear regression will also be similar for individuals and group averages when sampling without replacement from normally distributed variables. These simulations suggest that when a random sample from a population is selected, the correlation coefficients and linear regression values computed from individual scores will not be more accurate in estimating the entire population values compared to samples when group averages are used as long as the sample size is the same.

11. Linearizing Toda and SVD flows on large phase spaces of matrices with real spectrum

Abstract

We consider different phase spaces for the Toda flows and the less familiar SVD flows. For the Toda flow, we handle symmetric and non-symmetric matrices with real simple eigenvalues, possibly with a given profile. Profiles encode, for example, band matrices and Hessenberg matrices. For the SVD flow, we assume simplicity of the singular values. In all cases, an open cover is constructed, as are corresponding charts to Euclidean space. The charts linearize the flows, converting it into a linear differential system with constant coefficients and diagonal matrix. A variant construction transform the flows into uniform straight line motion. Since limit points belong to the phase space, asymptotic behavior becomes a local issue. Abstract

Fortran 2023, with its "do concurrent" and coarray parallel programming features, displaces many uses of extra-language parallel programming models such as MPI, OpenMP, and OpenACC. The Cray, Intel, LFortran, LLVM, and NVIDIA compilers automatically parallelize do concurrent in shared memory. The Cray, Intel, and GNU compilers support coarrays in shared- and distributed-memory, while the NAG compiler supports coarrays in shared memory. Thus, language-based parallelism is emerging as a portable alternative to MPI+X.This talk will present experiences with automatic "do concurrent" parallelization in the deep learning library Inference-Engine and coarray communication in the Intermediate Complexity Atmospheric Research (ICAR), respectively.

13. What Predicts the Momentum of Information and Communications Technologies Students in Community College?

Abstract

There is persistent underrepresentation of female and ethnic and racial minority students in computing. While community colleges provide a unique opportunity to increase diversity in computing fields, many students do not persist. This study aims to understand the factors that predict students' momentum--completion of a certificate, degree, or transfer in an information and communications technology (ICT) major--in order to generate information that can be used to tailor interventions. Participants were enrolled in ICT classes at 17 community colleges. Surveys were collected from 474 students at three time points over two years. Multilevel logistic regression was used to identify the factors that predict momentum approximately one year after the class ended. The results expand on Wang's theoretical model of student momentum. Men were more likely than women to have achieved an academic milestone, which was partially a result of taking more prior ICT classes, having more positive interactions with faculty and a more positive perception of the classroom climate, as well as greater motivation and fewer childcare responsibilities. Among students from groups that are underrepresented in computing, momentum was positively associated with taking prior ICT classes, motivation during the class, and romantic relationships; it was negatively associated with educational barriers. Being enrolled less than full-time at baseline or having financial challenges did not undermine momentum. Implications for practice, as well as study limitations are discussed.

We prove that a Poisson structure on a projective toric variety which is invariant by the torus action and whose symplectic leaves are the torus orbits is not exact. This is deduced from a geometric criterion for non-exactness of Poisson structures with a finite number of symplectic leaves.

Mentoring is widely cited as a strategy to increase the representation of Latinx in technology, but the role of informal relationships with adults outside their family remains unclear. This study explores how natural mentoring is utilized by Latinx youth at a community-based organization, including the perspectives of both mentors and mentees, what it looks like, and the implications for students' education and career pathways in the technology sector. The findings describe the motivations, strategies, and ideologies of the adults in informal learning settings, as well as similarities and differences in the perspectives of the mentors and mentees.

Abstract

We discuss a system of third order PDEs for strictly convex smooth functions on domains of Euclidean space. We argue that it may be understood as a closure of sorts of the first order prolongation of a family of second order PDEs. We describe explicitly its real analytic solutions and all the solutions which satisfy a genericity condition; we also describe a family of non-generic solutions which has an application to Poisson geometry and Kahler structures on toric varieties. Our methods are geometric: we use the theory of Hessian metrics and symmetric spaces to link the analysis of the system of PDEs with properties of the manifold of matrices with orthogonal columns.

38. Negotiating Trust, Power, and Culture in a Research-Practice Partnership

Abstract

This article describes the role of culture and power in building a research-practice partnership (RPP). The original aims that drove the building of the RPP were to generate and use research to inform the programs and services provided by the youth-serving organization to Latinx youth and to use the findings to inform research on how to broaden participation in computing. In this article, we describe how the RPP evolved. Data include documentation from meeting notes, e-mails, and observations as well as interviews with practitioners. The results suggest that the research goals and process changed when the partners began to critically analyze and discuss the role of power and culture, and adjustments to the methods and theoretical grounding of the research were made as a result. The lessons learned are summarized in terms of their implications for generating research that has both theoretical and social justice implications.

Abstract

We analyze \emph{submersions with Poisson fibres}. These are submersions whose total space carries a Poisson structure, on which the ambient Poisson structure pulls back, as a Dirac structure, to Poisson structures on each individual fibre. Our ``Poisson-Dirac viewpoint'' is prompted by natural examples of Poisson submersions with Poisson fibers -- in toric geometry and Poisson-Lie groups -- whose analysis was not possible using the existing tools in the Poisson literature. The first part of the paper studies the Poisson-Dirac perspective of inducing Poisson structures on submanifolds. This is a rich landscape, in which subtle behaviours abound -- as illustrated by a surprising ``jumping phenomenon'' concerning the complex relation between the induced and the ambient symplectic foliations, which we discovered here. These pathologies, however, are absent from the well-behaved and abundant class of \emph{coregular} submanifolds, with which we are mostly concerned here. The second part of the paper studies Poisson submersions with Poisson fibres -- the natural Poisson generalization of flat symplectic bundles. These Poisson submersions have coregular Poisson-Dirac fibres, and behave functorially with respect to such submanifolds. We discuss the subtle collective behavior of the Poisson fibers of such Poisson fibrations, and explain their relation to pencils of Poisson structures. The third and final part applies the theory developed to Poisson submersions with Poisson fibres which arise in Lie theory. We also show that such submersions are a convenient setting for the associated bundle construction, and we illustrate this by producing new Poisson structures with a finite number of symplectic leaves. Abstract

This paper describes two real analytic symplectomorphisms defined on appropriate dense open subsets of any coadjoint orbit of a compact semisimple Lie algebra. The first symplectomorphism sends the open dense subset to a bounded subset of a standard cotangent bundle. The second symplectomorphism has target a bounded subset of a hyperbolic coadjoint orbit of an associated non-compact semi-simple Lie algebra. 42. Computer Science Intensive Intervention to Prepare and Engage Underrepresented Novice Students at Community College

Abstract

As open-access institutions serving diverse student populations, community colleges are perfect settings for broadening participation in computing efforts in higher education. The very nature of open access, however, places students with a wide variety of previous experience in the same introductory computer science classroom, intimidating the students with little programming exposure, many of whom are traditionally underrepresented in computer science. This paper reports on a pre-semester, intensive program designed to increase the computer science confidence and motivation of students with no previous programming exposure implemented at a community college in California. Framed using social cognitive career theory, results from the accompanying research project indicate preliminary success; we found the program to be well received by the majority of students, who had increased self-efficacy and interest in computer science. Implications for practice and research are discussed.

BackgroundAlthough native to North America, the invasion of the aphid-like grape phylloxera Daktulosphaira vitifoliae across the globe altered the course of grape cultivation. For the past 150 years, viticulture relied on grafting-resistant North American Vitis species as rootstocks, thereby limiting genetic stocks tolerant to other stressors such as pathogens and climate change. Limited understanding of the insect genetics resulted in successive outbreaks across the globe when rootstocks failed. Here we report the 294-Mb genome of D. vitifoliae as a basic tool to understand host plant manipulation, nutritional endosymbiosis, and enhance global viticulture.ResultsUsing a combination of genome, RNA, and population resequencing, we found grape phylloxera showed high duplication rates since its common ancestor with aphids, but similarity in most metabolic genes, despite lacking obligate nutritional symbioses and feeding from parenchyma. Similarly, no enrichment occurred in development genes in relation to viviparity. However, phylloxera evolved > 2700 unique genes that resemble putative effectors and are active during feeding. Population sequencing revealed the global invasion began from the upper Mississippi River in North America, spread to Europe and from there to the rest of the world.ConclusionsThe grape phylloxera genome reveals genetic architecture relative to the evolution of nutritional endosymbiosis, viviparity, and herbivory. The extraordinary expansion in effector genes also suggests novel adaptations to plant feeding and how insects induce complex plant phenotypes, for instance galls. Finally, our understanding of the origin of this invasive species and its genome provide genetics resources to alleviate rootstock bottlenecks restricting the advancement of viticulture.

Abstract

We introduce an atlas adapted to the Toda flow on the manifold of full flags of any non-compact real semisimple Lie algebra, and on its Hessenberg-type submanifolds. In our local coordinates the Toda flow becomes linear. We use these new coordinates to show that the Toda flow on the manifold of full flags is Morse-Smale, which generalizes the main result of \cite{CSS1} to arbitrary non-compact real semisimple Lie algebras.
