Abstract

Nitrones are encouraging drug candidates for the treatment of oxidative stress-driven diseases such as acute ischemic stroke (AIS). In a previous study, we found a promising quinolylnitrone, QN23, which exerted a neuroprotective effect in neuronal cell cultures subjected to oxygen–glucose deprivation and in experimental models of cerebral ischemia. In this paper, we update the biological and pharmacological characterization of QN23. We describe the suitability of intravenous administration of QN23 to induce neuroprotection in transitory four-vessel occlusion (4VO) and middle cerebral artery occlusion (tMCAO) experimental models of brain ischemia by assessing neuronal death, apoptosis induction, and infarct area, as well as neurofunctional outcomes. QN23 significantly decreased the neuronal death and apoptosis induced by the ischemic episode in a dose-dependent manner and showed a therapeutic effect when administered up to 3 h after post-ischemic reperfusion onset, effects that remained 11 weeks after the ischemic episode. In addition, QN23 significantly reduced infarct volume, thus recovering the motor function in a tMCAO model. Remarkably, we assessed the antioxidant activity of QN23 in vivo using dihydroethidium as a molecular probe for radical species. Finally, we describe QN23 pharmacokinetic parameters. All these results pointing to QN23 as an interesting and promising preclinical candidate for the treatment of AIS.

Abstract

Resumen La transición desde las primeras justificaciones de propiedades geométricas en el entorno escolar hacia la demostración matemática en un contexto deductivo es un problema profusamente estudiado. A partir de la Teoría de los Paradigmas y Espacio de Trabajo Geométrico, que nos proporciona un marco teórico atendiendo al ambiente institucional en que se desarrolla la actividad geométrica, utilizamos el modelo de Razonamiento Configural para estudiar el espacio de trabajo geométrico personal del resolutor de una tarea de probar una propiedad geométrica. Describimos la organización discursiva de las respuestas de estudiantes de secundaria a un cuestionario de cuatro problemas, en los que se pide probar una propiedad geométrica, y determinamos los razonamientos configurales que realizan para obtener dichas respuestas. Este análisis nos permite aportar evidencias acerca del tránsito que deben recorrer los estudiantes desde las primeras justificaciones experimentales en la Geometría Natural hasta el razonamiento matemático válido propio de la Geometría Axiomática Natural. El Razonamiento Configural se muestra como un modelo teórico con una gran capacidad para abordar la articulación entre visualización y razonamiento. Abstract The transition from the first justifications of geometric properties in the school environment to the mathematic proof in a deductive context is an issue widely studied. From the Theory of Paradigms and Geometric Workspace, which provides a framework regarding the institutional environment in which the geometric activity is developed, we use the model of Configural Reasoning to study the resolver's geometric workspace when facing a task of proving a geometric property. We describe the discourse organization of high school students' responses to a four-task questionnaire in which they were asked to prove a geometric property, and we determine the configural reasoning that led them to those responses. This analysis allows us to provide evidence on the transition that students must undergo from their first experimental justifications in Natural Geometry to the valid mathematical reasoning proper of Natural Axiomatic Geometry. The Configural Reasoning is shown as a theoretical model with a great capacity for addressing the articulation between visualization and reasoning.

39. Effect of uric acid in animal models of ischemic stroke: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Abstract

Addition of uric acid (UA) to thrombolytic therapy, although safe, showed limited efficacy in improving patients' stroke outcome, despite alleged neuroprotective effects of UA in preclinical research. This systematic review assessed the effects of UA on brain structural and functional outcomes in animal models of ischemic stroke. We searched Medline, Embase and Web of Science to identify 16 and 14 eligible rodent studies for qualitative and quantitative synthesis, respectively. Range of evidence met 10 of a possible 13 STAIR criteria. Median (Q1, Q3) quality score was 7.5 (6, 10) on the CAMARADES 15-item checklist. For each outcome, we used standardised mean difference (SMD) as effect size and random-effects modelling. Meta-analysis showed that UA significantly reduced infarct size (SMD: −1.18; 95% CI [−1.47, −0.88]; p < 0.001), blood-brain barrier (BBB) impairment/oedema (SMD: −0.72; 95% CI [−0.97, −0.48]; p < 0.001) and neurofunctional deficit (SMD: −0.98; 95% CI [−1.32, −0.63]; p < 0.001). Overall, there was low to moderate between-study heterogeneity and sizeable publication bias. In conclusion, published rodent data suggest that UA improves outcome following ischemic stroke by reducing infarct size, improving BBB integrity and ameliorating neurofunctional condition. Abstract

This paper presents the design and practical implementation of a waveguide-based microwave filter in Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) technology. The use of SIW technology for implementing waveguide filters makes the presented design specially aimed for being used in undergraduate courses related to microwave engineering and filter designing. Their low cost and easiness from the filter fabrication point of view allows their use in microwave laboratory courses where students can implement their own theoretical filter designs and measure their frequency response.
