3. AgxCu100−x Decorated Si Micropillars as Photocathodes for the Reduction of CO2.

Abstract

This work reports the fabrication of p‐type Si micropillar (MP) substrates decorated with AgxCu100−x bimetallic nanoparticles and their application as photocathodes for CO2 photoelectrochemical reduction. Metal deposition by metal‐assisted chemical etching is chosen as the nanoparticle synthesis method, to explore for the first time its capabilities for 3D structures. It is found to be applicable, allowing a good control of the composition, with nanoparticles distributed along the entire MP, but with a coverage gradient from top to bottom. The AgxCu100−x decorated Si MPs photocathodes show enhanced light trapping compared to flat Si, with 45 % lower reflectance values in the visible and significantly higher catalytic activity, in terms of photocurrent density, overpotential and power savings (4.7 % for Ag50Cu50/Si MPs vs. 3 % for Ag50Cu50/flat‐Si). Si MPs coated with Ag50Cu50 and Ag20Cu80 provide the highest gain in potential (440 and 600 mV vs. bare Si MPs) and an increased selectivity towards high energy density products (i. e., CH4) compared to monometallic photocathodes. These are promising features for efficient light‐driven CO2 conversion. However, a significant metal loss is observed during photoelectrolysis, especially for Cu‐rich compositions. Suggestions to improve the photocathode performance in terms of metal coating homogeneity and catalyst stability are presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A general analytical explicit expression for the response of a surface charge transfer preceded by a non‐electrochemical process has been deduced. This solution is applicable to any electrochemical technique independent of the rates of both reactions. Interesting simplified cases are obtained for very common experimental situations in which the rates of electrochemical and non‐electrochemical steps are similar. These expressions have been applied to cyclic voltammetry in order to analyze the kinetic influences on the current‐potential response and to propose procedures for determining the rate and equilibrium constants of the mechanism. Moreover, it has been obtained an "apparent" rate constant of the overall process that reduces to a pure non‐electrochemical rate‐limiting process or to a pure electrochemical rate limiting one, under the right conditions. Experimental verification of the theoretical framework has been done with the analysis of the host‐guest complexation between a surface confined electroactive ferrocene moiety and a solution soluble cyclodextrin in a water‐ethanol media. From the dynamic analysis of the influence of the scan rate on the cyclic voltammetry curves, values have been obtained for the binding constant (4.96×105M-1) and rate constants for the inclusion complex formation and dissociation showing the great stability of the electro‐inactive ferrocene‐cyclodextrin complex. Overall kinetics of complex surface charge transfer processes: an analytical expression for the response of a surface charge transfer preceded by a non‐electrochemical process is applied to cyclic voltammetry to analyze the kinetic influences on the overall current‐potential response. Experimental verification is carried out with the analysis of the host‐guest complexation between surface confined electroactive ferrocene and a soluble cyclodextrin in water‐ethanol media. Abstract

A theoretical study of the IT-CeqC mechanism (ion transfer followed by a chemical equilibrium and a subsequent chemical reaction) is presented at liquid|liquid macrointerfaces by using the double pulse electrochemical techniques reverse pulse voltammetry (RPV), double pulse chronoamperometry and differential double pulse voltammetry (DDPV). These techniques have proven to be very powerful for the characterization and identification of homogeneous kinetics coupled to the charge transfer, with high sensitivity and reduced capacitive and background effects. From the general analytical expressions here deduced, interesting limiting cases and eccentric behaviours are revealed. Methodologies and tools are given for the extraction of the chemical kinetics and thermodynamics on the basis of the analysis of the RPV limiting current, RPV cross potential and DDPV peak potential. The results can be valuable for the investigation of outstanding processes such as the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), the voltammetry of which can be described in a first approach by the IT-CeqC mechanism.
