Abstract: Resumen: En la actualidad los arrecifes de coral se están degradando rápidamente por diversos factores derivados de la actividad humana como son la acidificación de los océanos, el calentamiento global o la contaminación entre otros. Los corales son animales llamados pólipos que viven en simbiosis con las zooxantelas, una especie de alga. En la relación simbiótica interviene un elemento fundamental, la luz, permite que las algas realicen la fotosíntesis, generando en el proceso nutrientes con los que los corales se alimentan y a la vez, las zooxantelas son capaces de aprovechar los residuos de los corales para nutrirse. Para reproducir fielmente las condiciones lumínicas del hábitat natural de los corales es necesario una lámpara que genere un espectro similar al que se genera cuando la luz solar penetra en el agua. Las soluciones comerciales que ofrece el mercado actualmente son lámparas altamente costosas. El objetivo principal del proyecto es desarrollar una lámpara para el crecimiento de corales en acuarios marinos, que genere una iluminación que represente fielmente el hábitat natural de los corales, que disponga de posibilidad de configurar el espectro, y a la vez, variar su intensidad, que tenga un alto rendimiento energético y que abarate costes sobre el mercado actual. Para el desarrollo se ha utilizado una metodología en cascada, primero se ha estudiado el espectro que genera la luz solar a distintas profundidades del fondo marino. A continuación, se han seleccionado unos LED para generar dicho espectro y los drivers para suministrarles energía, y que a la vez aporten las características de configurabilidad, control y rendimiento que demanda el proyecto. Para asegurar el buen funcionamiento de la lámpara se ha realizado un estudio térmico y diseñado un sistema de refrigeración que mantenga las temperaturas bajas para alargar la vida de los componentes. Abstract: Resumen: El presente Trabajo de Fin de Grado consiste en el diseño, fabricación y caracterización de un convertidor DC/DC reductor síncrono con transistores de Nitruro de Galio (GaN) en lugar de los transistores convencionales de silicio (Si). La tecnología de GaN ha surgido como una alternativa prometedora a los transistores de Si debido a su alta velocidad de conmutación, baja resistencia a la conducción y menor capacidad de entrada. Estas características permiten que los dispositivos de GaN operen a frecuencias más altas con menor pérdida de energía, lo que se traduce en una mayor eficiencia y densidad de potencia para los convertidores de energía. En este Trabajo de Fin de Grado, se ha procedido tanto a la realización del cálculo teórico como a la simulación del diseño para poder dimensionar todos los componentes de potencia. Además, se han diseñado tanto los esquemáticos como el PCB teniendo en cuenta las características de los componentes y capacidades del convertidor. Se han montado los componentes en el PCB diseñado dando lugar al convertidor como tal. Finalmente, se caracterizó el diseño del convertidor realizando un plan de validación a través de ensayos. Así, se verificaron tanto los cálculos como las simulaciones realizadas durante el diseño y especificación del proyecto. Abstract: The Atlantic chub mackerel (Scomber colias) is one of the main fishing resources for the fisheries targeting small pelagics in NW African waters. This species is expanding its geographical distribution through higher latitudes in southern European Atlantic waters, and it has become an important fishing resource in Iberian Atlantic waters during the last decades. The present study addresses the growth variability of S. colias in the Iberian waters, from southern Bay of Biscay up to Gulf of Cadiz. Age estimates based on otoliths and growth parameters were obtained from specimens collected within the study area during one decade (from both commercial landings and scientific-acoustic surveys), and sexual growth variation was analysed. A common pattern of abundant cohorts was observed in various areas. However, differences in the demographic structure of the catches were observed among the different areas, with the southernmost area studied (Portuguese and Spanish waters off Gulf of Cadiz) standing out with younger individuals. These new findings are of interest for the stock assessment of S. colias, which has not been addressed in ICES waters so far.

Abstract: The present working document summarises the main results obtained from the ECOCADIZ-RECLUTAS 2021-10 Spanish (pelagic ecosystem-) acoustic-trawl survey conducted by IEO between 21st October and 07th November 2021 in the Portuguese and Spanish shelf waters (20-200 m isobaths) off the Gulf of Cadiz (GoC) onboard the R/V Ramón Margalef. The survey suffered a ten-day delay in relation to the usual starting dates. The survey’s main objective is the acoustic assessment of anchovy and sardine juveniles (age 0 fish) in the GoC recruitment areas. The 21 foreseen acoustic transects were sampled. A total of 18 valid fishing hauls were carried out for echo-trace ground-truthing purposes. Chub mackerel, anchovy and sardine were the most frequent captured species in the fishing hauls, followed by horse mackerel, bogue, Atlantic mackerel, Mediterranean horse mackerel and blue jack mackerel. Boarfish, longspine snipefish and pearlside showed an incidental occurrence in the hauls performed in the surveyed area. Sardine and chub mackerel showed the highest yields in these hauls, followed by anchovy and Mediterranean horse mackerel. Total and Spanish estimates of total NASC allocated to the “pelagic fish species assemblage” in this survey showed lower values than those recorded last year, whereas the Portuguese estimates showed an increasing trend. GoC anchovy was widely distributed in the surveyed area, although avoided the easternmost waters. Higher densities were recorded between Alfanzina and west of Cape Santa Maria, in the Algarve, and between Isla Cristina and Bay of Cadiz. Anchovy acoustic estimates in autumn 2021, 17 512 t and 1973 million fish, experienced 38% and 51% decreases in abundance and biomass, respectively, in relation to the last year’s autumn estimates and they were lower than their time-series averages. Abstract: Quantifying factors that influence marine predator distributions is essential to understanding the current and future change in marine biodiversity. Here, we test whether marine predator distribution relates to prey, or is better predicted by other specific habitat features. We examine the correlation between spatial distribution of three seabird species and their prey, as well as environmental proxies (oceanographic characteristics) in the Gulf of Cadiz, NE Atlantic. We modeled the at-sea distribution of Cory's shearwater, Balearic shearwater and Northern gannet, based on: (i) pelagic fish abundance according to acoustic surveys, and (ii) a forecast-model of remotely sensed environmental variables (productivity, sea surface temperature, and salinity). In general, seabird distributions were better predicted by abundance of fish than by environmental variables at the habitat scale. We obtained consistent correlations between seabird presence and the abundance of medium-sized (- cm) sardines, anchovies and Mediterranean horse mackerel, providing information on their preferred prey. Additionally, oceanographic productivity variables moderately contributed to seabird distribution models, with better predictive value for the critically endangered Balearic shearwater and Northern gannet in the summer, whilst the model for Cory's shearwater's produced poorer predictions. Predator-prey combined studies may represent essential tools for an efficient ecosystem-based management of marine environments.

Abstract: Atlantic chub mackerel is a pelagic species present in the Atlantic Ocean that in recent decades has expanded northwards in the eastern Atlantic. Fish samples were collected in scientific surveys and commercial catches between 2011 and 2019. We analysed the geographical variation of the biological parameters (age, length, weight and condition), as well as the length-weight relationship, maturity-at-length and spawning season onset and duration in five geographical areas (from south to north): the Canary Islands, Gulf of Cadiz, western Portuguese coast, northwestern Spanish coast and Canta-brian Sea. The influence of sea surface temperature (SST) on fish length was modelled as a potential driver of geographical variability. All biological parameters increased progressively northwards, while the spawning season was delayed and prolonged with increasing latitude, from January in the Canary Islands to May-August in the Cantabrian Sea, when SST was between 15°C and 19°C. SST had a positive effect on length in three study areas and a negative one in two of them, suggesting that each group is at a different position within their thermal tolerance range. Deviance from the geographical pattern of some biological parameters in the Gulf of Cadiz suggests that it could be a hinge or mixing zone between Atlantic African, Mediterranean and Atlantic Iberian population components.

Abstract: El auge de circuitos electrónicos de baja potencia o que funcionan sin conexión a la red explica la importancia del desarrollo de campos como el energy harvesting o recolección de energía ambiental. Debido a la baja carga de energía generada en el ambiente es necesario buscar el máximo rendimiento de los elementos que se encargarán de recolectar esta energía. Uno de los fenómenos que permite esta recolección ambiental es el efecto piezoeléctrico. En el entorno en el que nos encontramos hay diferentes frecuencias, por lo que es muy importante encontrar el material idóneo para optimizar la recolección de la energía presente en el ambiente en el que se esté trabajando. La fase inicial del proyecto consiste en el diseño y realización de una tarjeta que permita caracterizar de forma automatizada y eficiente el elemento, o elementos, piezoeléctrico. La segunda fase del proyecto consiste en ampliar una aplicación LabVIEW® desarrollada con anterioridad añadiendo la función de la caracterización del aprovechamiento eléctrico. Esta nueva función devuelve como resultado final los valores más significativos del aprovechamiento eléctrico, además de presentar los resultados de forma gráfica. La segunda fase del proyecto consiste en ampliar una aplicación LabVIEW® desarrollada con anterioridad añadiendo la función de la caracterización del aprovechamiento eléctrico. Esta nueva función devuelve como resultado final los valores más significativos del aprovechamiento eléctrico, además de presentar los resultados de forma gráfica. Finalizada la etapa del proyecto que permite la toma de medidas automatizada se procede a realizar dichas medidas. Primero y haciendo uso de la aplicación se repetirán las medidas realizadas en el proyecto nombrado anteriormente pero utilizando un material de soporte diferente. Una vez que se hayan comparado las diferencias entre un material u otro se procederá al montaje de una nueva estructura que permitirá añadir hasta tres elementos piezoeléctricos más.

Abstract: The present working document summarises a part of the main results obtained from the Spanish (pelagic ecosystem-) acoustic survey conducted by IEO between 01st and 14th August 2020 in the Portuguese and Spanish shelf waters (20-200 m isobaths) off the Gulf of Cadiz (GoC) onboard the R/V Miguel Oliver. The 21 foreseen acoustic transects were sampled. A total of 26 valid fishing hauls were carried out for echo-trace ground-truthing purposes. Four additional night trawls were conducted to collect anchovy hydrated females (DEPM). This working document only provides abundance and biomass estimates for anchovy, sardine and chub mackerel, which are presented without age structure. The distribution of all the mid-sized and small pelagic fish species susceptible of being acoustically assessed is also shown from the mapping of their back-scattering energies. GoC anchovy acoustic estimates in summer 2020 were of 5153 million fish and 44 877 tones, with the bulk of the population occurring in the Spanish waters. The current biomass estimate becomes in the second historical maximum within the time-series. The estimates of sardine abundance and biomass in summer 2020 were 1923 million fish and 50 721 t, estimates close to the historical average, but lower than the values estimated last year and the most recent maxima reached in 2018. A total of 32 854 t and 448 million fish were estimated for Chub mackerel, estimates similar to the most recent ones and very close to the time-series average.

Abstract: The Daily Egg Production Method (DEPM) to estimate the Anchovy Spawning Stock Biomass (SSB) in the Gulf of Cádiz (ICES, Subdivision 9a South) is conducted by Spain (Centro Nacional Instituto Español de Oceanografía, CSIC) every three years, since 2005. BOCADEVA 0720 is the sixth survey of the historical DEPM series for anchovy in the Gulf of Cádiz and was delivered on board R/V Ramón Margalef (CNIEO) from the 9th to the 17th of July 2020. The surveyed area extended from Strait of Gibraltar to Cape San Vicente (Spanish and Portuguese waters in the Gulf of Cadiz). Plankton samples, along a grid of 21 transects perpendicular to the coast were obtained for the spawning area delimitation and density estimation of the daily egg production. The survey objectives also included the characterization of the oceanographic and meteorological conditions in the study area. The samples to estimate adult parameters (sex ratio, female mean weight, batch fecundity and spawning fraction) were obtained in the acoustic survey “ECOCADIZ 2020-07”, carried out during the same period. This working document provides a d escription of the survey, laboratory analysis and estimation procedures used to obtain the Gulf of Cadiz Anchovy SSB by DEPM for 2020 in the South-Atlantic Iberian Stock.

21. Acoustic assessment and distribution of anchovy, sardine and chub mackerel in ICES Subdivision 9a South during the ECOCADIZ-RECLUTAS 2020-10 Spanish survey (October 2020) with notes on the distribution of other pelagic species

Abstract: The present working document summarises a part of the main results obtained during the ECOCADIZ-RECLUTAS 2020-10 Spanish (pelagic ecosystem-) acoustic survey. The survey was conducted by IEO between 02nd and 21st October 2020 in the Portuguese and Spanish shelf waters (20-200 m isobaths) off the Gulf of Cadiz (GoC) onboard the R/V Ramón Margalef. The survey’s main objective is the acoustic assessment of anchovy and sardine juveniles (age 0 fish) in the recruitment areas of the GoC. The 21 foreseen acoustic transects were sampled. A total of 22 valid fishing hauls were carried out for echo-trace ground-truthing purposes. This working document only provides abundance and biomass estimates for anchovy, sardine and chub mackerel, which are presented without age structure. The distribution of all the mid-sized and small pelagic fish species susceptible of being acoustically assessed is also shown from the mapping of their back-scattering energies. GoC anchovy acoustic estimates in autumn 2020, 36 070 t and 3197 million fish, showed a decrease in relation to the historical peak recorded the last year, but they were either close (abundance) or even higher (biomass) than the time-series average. As usual, the bulk of the population, including juveniles, was located in Spanish waters. GoC sardine experienced a huge increase in autumn 2020, rising up to its time-series maximum and yielding 208 400 t and 5451 million fish, with similar regional contributions to the population and with the juveniles being located in the Spanish coastal waters. Chub mackerel estimates were of 22 918 t and 295 million fish, representing a slight decrease compared with the last year, but still above the time-series average.

Total and regional estimates of total NASC allocated to the “pelagic fish species assemblage” in this survey become the historical records in their time-series. Such estimates are the result of the relatively high acoustic contributions of sardine (both in Portuguese and Spanish waters), anchovy (in Spanish waters), and chub mackerel (in Portuguese waters). GoC anchovy was widely distributed in the surveyed area, although higher densities were recorded between east of Cape Santa Maria and Bay of Cadiz. Anchovy acoustic estimates in autumn 2020, 36 070 t and 3197 million fish, showed a decrease in relation to the historical peak recorded the last year, but they were either close (abundance) or even higher (biomass) than the time-series average. Abstract: The present working document summarises the main results obtained from the ECOCADIZ 2020-07 Spanish (pelagic ecosystem-) acoustic-trawl survey conducted by IEO between 01st and 14th August 2020 in the Portuguese and Spanish shelf waters (20-200 m isobaths) off the Gulf of Cadiz (GoC) onboard the R/V Miguel Oliver. The 21 foreseen acoustic transects were sampled. A total of 26 valid fishing hauls were carried out for echo-trace ground-truthing purposes. Four additional night trawls were conducted to collect anchovy hydrated females (DEPM-adult ad hoc sampling). Chub mackerel was the most frequent captured species in the fishing hauls, followed by mackerel, anchovy, horse mackerel, bogue, sardine, blue jack mackerel and Mediterranean horse mackerel. Round sardinella, longspine snipefish, Atlantic pomfret and transparent goby showed a very low occurrence, whereas the occurrence of boarfish and pearlside was incidental. Chub mackerel, anchovy and sardine showed the highest yields in these hauls. The estimate of total NASC allocated to the “pelagic fish species assemblage” has shown a slight decrease in relation to the historical records in 2018 and 2019, mainly caused by the regional decrease in Spanish waters. However, both total and regional estimates are still above their respective historical averages. Such estimates are the result of the relatively high acoustic contributions of anchovy, sardine (both mainly in Spanish waters), and chub mackerel (in Portuguese waters). GoC anchovy was widely distributed in the surveyed area, showing the highest densities between Cape Santa Maria and Bay of Cadiz. Anchovy acoustic estimates in summer 2020 were of 5153 million fish and 44 877 tones, with the bulk of the population occurring in the Spanish waters. The population was composed by fishes not older than 2 years, with age-0 fish contributing 75% of the total population. Abstract: Seafood is an essential source of protein globally. As its demand continues to rise, balancing food security and the health of marine ecosystems has become a pressing challenge. Ecosystem-based fisheries management (EBFM) has been adopted by the European Union (EU) Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) to meet this challenge by accounting for the multiple interacting natural and socio-economic drivers. The CFP includes both the implementation of regulatory measures to EU stocks and the establishment of bilateral fisheries agreements with neighbouring countries, known as sustainable fisheries partnership agreements (SFPAs). While the effects of fisheries management regulations are well acknowledged, the consequences of the SFPAs on EU ecosystems have been commonly overlooked. Here we investigate the development of the Gulf of Cadiz marine ecosystem over the last two decades and found evidence of the impact of both policy interventions. Our findings reveal the effectiveness of regulatory measures in reverting a progressively degrading ecosystem, characterised by high fishing pressure and dominance of opportunistic species, to a more stable configuration, characterised by higher biomass of small pelagics and top predators after 2005. Knock-on effects of the EU-Morocco SFPA and climate effects were detected before 2005, resulting in increased purse seine fishing effort, lower biomass of pelagic species and warmer temperatures. This southern EU marine ecosystem has been one of the latest to introduce regulations and is very exposed to fishery agreements with neighbouring Morocco. Our study highlights the importance of taking into consideration, not only the effects of in situ fisheries regulations but also the indirect implications of political agreements in the framework of EBFM.

The estimates of sardine abundance and biomass in summer 2020 were 1923 million fish and 50 721 t, estimates close to the historical average, but lower than the values estimated last year and the most recent maxima reached in 2018. A total of 32 854 t and 448 million fish were estimated for Chub mackerel, estimates similar to the most recent ones and very close to the time-series average.

BOCADEVA 0720 is the sixth survey of the historical DEPM series for anchovy in the Gulf of Cádiz and was delivered on board R/V Ramón Margalef (IEO) from the 9th to the 17th of July 2020.This working document provides a brief description of the survey and the progress status of t h e laboratory analysis c a r ri e d o u t to obtain the Anchovy SSB by the a ppl i c at i o n o f th e DEPM in the South-Atlantic Iberian Stock.

Abstract: La energía y el agua son los principales impulsores de la producción agrícola, sin embargo, el mundo se enfrenta, entre otras, a una grave crisis energética. A día de hoy nos encontramos frente a una mayor necesidad de producción y eficiencia de cultivos por unidad de área ya que nos encontramos frente a un creciente número de personas y por lo tanto un mayor consumo. El mundo rural cada vez se encuentra más despoblado y, en la actualidad, no se dedican suficientes recursos al desarrollo de la productividad necesaria de cultivos. Tradicionalmente, España ha sido un país dedicado a la agricultura y la ganadería. Sin embargo, sólo alrededor de un 5% de la población se dedica a dicho sector y, gracias a la tecnología, es posible implantar sistemas de riego autónomos para obtener una mayor productividad. Actualmente la programación está muy integrada en la sociedad y debemos aprovechar los medios a nuestro alcance para lograr aplicaciones más eficaces. De la búsqueda de dicha eficacia y productividad surge este proyecto, el cual perseguirá la integración de un sistema de riego programado capaz de evaluar las condiciones en tiempo real, comunicarse con los sensores y con el usuario, y decidir de forma autónoma la manera de actuación generando así una cosecha de mayor producción por unidad de cultivo optimizando los medios. El objetivo principal del presente proyecto es diseñar un sistema fotovoltaico para el funcionamiento de un mecanismo de bombeo de agua controlado por un sistema autónomo basado en Arduino y con la posibilidad de visualización de estadísticas de uso en una web mediante comunicaciones GSM. En primer lugar se realizará el diseño del sistema solar fotovoltaico dimensionando el consumo del conjunto. Para ello se tendrá en cuenta el objetivo de energía para alimentar el sistema completo. Por otro lado, se realizará una etapa de potencia para poder abastecer al sistema Arduino con la alimentación requerida. Se utilizará para el diseño del circuito la topolog

Abstract: El propósito general de este proyecto es llevar a cabo el diseño, mediante la utilización de sistemas y componentes existentes en el mercado, de un Sistema de Alimentación Ininterrumpida (SAI) de potencia mediana-grande destinado a la alimentación de equipos de Telecomunicación alimentados en tensiones de 230Vca, -48Vcc y +24Vcc. El SAI es de la máxima fiabilidad posible, dispone de tolerancia a fallo, es compacto, modular, ampliable en potencia, del máximo rendimiento posible, optimiza su explotación, tanto localmente como remotamente, disponiendo de telesupervisión del funcionamiento de todos sus componentes, y telemando (apertura y cierre remotos) de todos los circuitos de alimentación a las cargas alimentadas por él. Para conseguir los objetivos marcados se analizarán los equipos y componentes existentes en el mercado capaces de formar parte del SAI y que dispongan de las mejores prestaciones en relación con los objetivos que se persiguen. La metodología empleada consiste en dividir el Sistema de Alimentación en distintos Bloques, que ensamblados e interconectados entre sí, permitan configurarlo cumpliendo con los objetivos. Todos los equipos y componentes seleccionados para la configuración de los distintos Bloques son de la máxima fiabilidad y rendimiento posibles. El cumplimiento de los objetivos marcados para el SAI permite obtener un ahorro económico, tanto en costes de energía consumida de la Red de la que se alimenta, (dada la optimización del rendimiento y la minimización de las pérdidas en potencia con la consecuencia de reducción de las necesidades de refrigeración de la instalación), en los costes relacionados con el personal de explotación y mantenimiento (dada la facilidad de explotación y reparación), y en los costes relacionados con el espacio ocupado por el Sistema en la instalación donde se ubique (dado su tamaño compacto). Abstract: Quantifying factors that influence marine predator distributions is essential to understanding the current and future change in marine biodiversity. Here, we test whether marine predator distribution relates to prey, or is better predicted by other specific habitat features. We examine the correlation between spatial distribution of three seabird species and their prey, as well as environmental proxies (oceanographic characteristics) in the Gulf of Cadiz, NE Atlantic. We modeled the at-sea distribution of Cory's shearwater, Balearic shearwater and Northern gannet, based on: (i) pelagic fish abundance according to acoustic surveys, and (ii) a forecast-model of remotely sensed environmental variables (productivity, sea surface temperature, and salinity). In general, seabird distributions were better predicted by abundance of fish than by environmental variables at the habitat scale. We obtained consistent correlations between seabird presence and the abundance of medium-sized (10–20 cm) sardines, anchovies and Mediterranean horse mackerel, providing information on their preferred prey. Additionally, oceanographic productivity variables moderately contributed to seabird distribution models, with better predictive value for the critically endangered Balearic shearwater and Northern gannet in the summer, whilst the model for Cory's shearwater's produced poorer predictions. Abstract: The present working document summarises the main results obtained during the ECOCADIZ-RECLUTAS 2018-10 Spanish (pelagic ecosystem-) acoustic survey. The survey was conducted by IEO between 10th and 29th October 2018 in the Portuguese and Spanish shelf waters (20-200 m isobaths) off the Gulf of Cadiz onboard the R/V Ramón Margalef. The survey’s main objective is the acoustic assessment of anchovy and sardine juveniles (age 0 fish) in the recruitment areas of the Gulf of Cadiz. The 21 foreseen acoustic transects were sampled. A total of 25 valid fishing hauls were carried out for echo-trace ground-truthing purposes. Chub mackerel was the most frequent species in those hauls, followed by sardine, anchovy, horse mackerel, mackerel, bogue and Mediterranean horse mackerel. Acoustic sampling was carried out with the recently installed Simrad™ EK80 echo-sounder working in multi-frequency and in CW mode. A misconfiguration of the range of the acoustic active layer entailed to slow down the ping rate (1.5-2.0 seconds) in relation to the standard values (at about 0.3 seconds), resulting an acoustic sampling rate much lower than it should be. Therefore, the results from this acoustic sampling and the resulting estimates from this survey should be considered with caution. Anchovy abundance and biomass were of 953 million fish and 10 493 t. The abundance and biomass of age-0 anchovies were estimated at 543 million fish and 3 834 t, 57% and 36% of the total population abundance and biomass, respectively. Despite the methodological problems, these estimates seem to suggest a recent decrease in relation to previous years. The estimates for Gulf of Cadiz sardine in the surveyed area were of 1 134 million fish and 20 679 t. Estimates of age-0 sardine were of 1 036 million fish and 15 224 t, 91% and 74% of the total estimated abundance and biomass, respectively.
