Abstract

Understanding and predicting the electric consumption patterns in the short-, mid- and long-term, at the distribution and transmission level, is a fundamental asset for smart grids infrastructure planning, dynamic network reconfiguration, dynamic energy pricing and savings, and thus energy efficiency. This work introduces the Functional Principal Component Analysis (FPCA) as a versatile method to both investigate and predict, at different level of spatial aggregation, the consumption patterns. The method was applied to a unique and sensitive dataset that includes electric consumption and contractual information of Milan metropolitan area. The decomposition of the load patterns into principal functions was found to be a powerful method to identify the physical and behavioral causes underlying the daily consumptions, given knowledge of exogenous variables such as calendar and meteorological data. The effectiveness of long-term predictions based on principal functions was proved on Milan's metropolitan area data and assessed on a publicly-available dataset., Comment: Accepted for publication on Sustainable Energy, Grids and Networks (Elsevier)

Abstract

This study outlines an overview of the general requirements for the control rooms of the future power systems (2030+). The roles and activities in the future control centres will evolve with respect to the switching, dispatching and restoration functions currently active. The control centre operators will supervise on the power system and intervene - when necessary - thanks to the maturation and wide scale deployment of flexible controls. For the identification of control room requirements, general trends in power system evolution are considered and mainly the outcomes of the ELECTRA IRP project, that proposes a new Web-of-Cell (WoC) power system control architecture. Dedicated visualisation features are proposed, aimed to support the control room operators activities in a WoC-oriented approach. Furthermore, the work takes into account the point of view of network operators about future control rooms and feedback about the proposed visualisation features, collected by means of interviews and questionnaires.

18. Scenario-based approach adopted in the ELECTRA project for deriving innovative control room functionality

Abstract

Here, the authors analyse the operator point of view of the Web-of-Cells concept defined in the EU project ELECTRA, by identifying operator tasks into the supervision of a highly automated power system, and the information requirements to facilitate appropriate operator situation awareness. The study outlines the methodology adopted, which is based on the cognitive work analysis framework, to provide an overview of the most interesting scenarios and to summarise the requirements analysis results. In order to derive required control room functionality, a set of relevant control room scenarios have been identified based on the Web-of-Cells control concept. The authors considered scenarios that challenge traditional control schemes, scenarios that caused major failures (i.e. blackouts), and scenarios that can be expected to appear in the future. For each scenario, information concerning network layout, triggering events, physical constraints, manually/automatic operations, operators' tasks, and relevant analytics have been analysed.

23. A Use Case Methodology to Handle Conflicting Controller Requirements for Future Power Systems

Abstract

This paper proposes a standards based requirements elicitation and analysis strategy tailored for smart grid control structure development. Control structures in electric power systems often span across several systems and stakeholders. Requirements elicitation for such control systems therefore requires coordination across many stakeholders and it is challenging to achieve a consistent design. To enable an iterative and distributed development we suggest a conflict management approach as a modular element of the design strategy, focusing on conflict identification and tracing. The idea is to describe a process starting from a tailored IEC 62559 template amended for recording controller conflicts and adapting the underlying use case management repository for collaborative work. Conflict identification is supported by Multilevel Flow Modeling providing abstracted conflict patterns.

Abstract

Interconnection of inverters to the electrical grid is a key issue for the widespread integration of distributed energy resources, especially when the scenario surrounding international standards is so unclear As a pre-normative research step, a round-robin test of two small-scale photovoltaic inverters was performed by nine DERlab laboratories during 2009. The test activity was focused on the verification of individual test procedures, common interpretation of standards and requirements, and determination of problems related to the equipment and facilities involved in conducting round- robin tests. Abstract

The experimental set-up and the first results of PD measurements performed to evaluate different types of MV cable-joints under electrical and thermal stresses, are discussed in the paper. Twelve cables equipped with different types of joints were connected together to form a ring in short-circuit. The ring was enegized at rated voltage and current. Cycles of temperature having a period of one day have been applied by controlling the current by means of external coils. PD were monitored during the heating and cooling of the cables. Problems related to calibration and signal interference between the different cables, have been examined. The PD inception and the evolution of PD patterns due to the formation of defects in some joints, are discussed.
