Currently, direct injection for gasoline engines is a primary trend for improving the efficiency allowing to reduce fuel consumption and meet stringent emission standards. A large temporal and spatial variation of mixture composition near the spark location during low speed and high load operation are driving the demands for significantly improved ignition systems. Recently, plasma-assisted ignition systems received increasing interest, they are used for combustion initiation and control and show the potential for flame stabilization. The aim of this paper is to improve the understanding of the processes related to the use of a plasma-assisted ignition system and its influence on combustion development. Experiments were performed in an optical SI engine equipped with the cylinder head and injection system of a commercial SI turbocharged engine. The effect of the spark plug geometry and of the plasma configurations were investigated. UV-visible digital imaging was applied. The optical data were correlated to in-cylinder pressure-based data and exhaust emission measurements. Significantly higher stability, quantified through the coefficients of variation of IMEP and of flame radius, was obtained using the alternative ignition system. An improvement in engine performance and pollutant emissions was achieved.

- Abstract
The addition of alcohol to conventional hydrocarbon fuels for a spark-ignition engine can increase the fuel octane rating and the power for a given engine displacement and compression ratio. In this work, the influence of butanol addition to gasoline was investigated. The experiments were performed in an optical ported fuel injection single cylinder SI engine with an external boosting device. The engine was equipped with the head of a commercial SI turbocharged engine having the same geometrical specifications (bore, stroke and compression ratio). The effect of a blend of 20% of n-butanol and 80% of gasoline (BU20) on in-cylinder combustion process was investigated by cycle resolved visualization. The engine worked at low speed, medium boosting and wide open throttle. Changes in spark timing and fuel injection phasing were considered. Comparisons between the flame luminosity and the combustion pressure data were performed. The fuel was injected both at closed intake valve (CV) and open intake valve (OV). The spark timing was changed to identify the maximum brake torque and the knocking limit. Butanol blend allowed working in more advanced spark timing without occurrence of abnormal combustion. For the blend BU20, the duration of injection (DOI) was increased to obtain a stoichiometric mixture. For both fuels, at stoichiometric conditions, DOI in OV was maintained shorter than that in CV, due to the lower amount of fuel deposited on intake port and on piston surface. The combustion images showed a different combustion behavior injecting the fuel in CV and in OV conditions. In OV condition, several light spots were observed in the flame front region due to the condensed fuel attached on the optical piston wall. In CV condition, the light spots are bigger but less in number than in OV condition. For BU20 the previous phenomena were less evident due to the chemical composition of the blend that reduces the amount of fuel attached to the piston wall. - Abstract
Effect on combustion process of gasoline/diesel and n-butanol/diesel blends in an optical compression ignition engine. To meet the future stringent emission standards, innovative diesel engine technology, exhaust gas after-treatment, and clean alternative fuels are required. Oxygenated fuels have showed a tendency to decrease internal combustion engine emissions. In the same time, advanced fuel injection modes can promote a further reduction of the pollutants at the exhaust without penalty for the combustion efficiency. One of the more interesting solutions is provided by the premixed low temperature combustion (PLTC) mechanism jointly to lower-cetane, higher-volatility fuels. To understand the role played by these factors on soot formation, optical techniques and were applied in a high swirl multi-jets compression ignition engine. Combustion tests were carried out using three fuels: commercial diesel, a blend of 80% diesel with 20% gasoline (G20) and a blend of 80% diesel with 20% n-butanol (BU20). The fuels were tested at 70MPa injection pressure and different timings using an open Common Rail injection system. At late injection timing coupled to high EGR rate (50%), the blends increased the ignition delay allowing to operate in partially premixed LTC (PPLTC) regime in which the fuel is completely injected before the start of combustion. Strong reduction of engine out emissions of smoke and NOx were obtained but with a little penalty on engine efficiency. This limitation was overcome operating at earlier injection timing in which a mixing controlled combustion (MCC) LTC regime was realized. In this regime, a good compromise between low engine out emissions and efficiency was achieved.

The SENTINEL study showed that the addition of natalizumab improved outcomes for patients with relapsing multiple sclerosis (MS) who had experienced disease activity while receiving interferon beta-1a (IFNbeta-1a) alone. Previously unreported secondary and tertiary magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measures are presented here. Patients received natalizumab 300 mg (n=589) or placebo (n=582) intravenously every 4 weeks plus IFNbeta-1a 30 microg intramuscularly once weekly. Annual MRI scans allowed comparison of a range of MRI end points versus baseline. Over 2 years, 67% of patients receiving natalizumab plus IFNbeta-1a remained free of new or enlarging T2-lesions compared with 30% of patients receiving IFNbeta-1a alone. The mean change from baseline in T2 lesion volume over 2 years decreased in patients receiving natalizumab plus IFNbeta-1a and increased in those receiving IFNbeta-1a alone (-277.5mm(3) versus 525.6mm(3); p0.001). Compared with IFNbeta-1a alone, add-on natalizumab therapy resulted in a smaller increase in mean T1-hypointense lesion volume after 2 years (1821.3mm(3) versus 2210.5mm(3); p0.001), a smaller mean number of new T1-hypointense lesions over 2 years (2.3 versus 4.1; p0.001), and a slower rate of brain atrophy during the second year of therapy (-0.31% versus -0.40%; p=0.020). Natalizumab add-on therapy reduced gadolinium-enhancing, T1-hypointense, and T2 MRI lesion activity and slowed brain atrophy progression in patients with relapsing MS who experienced disease activity despite treatment with IFNbeta-1a alone.

- Abstract
The efficiency of the small engines for the two-wheel vehicles can be further improved especially at low speeds and high loads. In these conditions fuel consumption and pollutant emission should be reduced maintaining the performance levels. This optimization can be realized only by the improvement in the basic knowledge of the thermo-fluid dynamic phenomena occurring during the combustion process. It is known that, during the fuel injection phase in PFI SI engines, thin films of liquid fuel can form on the valves surface and on the cylinder walls. Successively the fuel films interact with the intake manifold and the combustion chamber gas flow. During the normal combustion process, it is possible to achieve gas temperature and mixture strength conditions that lead to fuel film ignition. This phenomenon can create diffusion-controlled flames. These flames persist well after the normal combustion event and induce the formation and then the exhaust emission of soot and unburned hydrocarbons. In this paper, experimental activities were carried out in the combustion chamber of a single-cylinder optical engine in order to investigate the in-cylinder formation and exhaust emission of particulate from a 4-stroke engine for 2-wheel vehicle. The engine was equipped with the four-valve head of a commercial scooter engine and it was fuelled with European commercial gasoline. Cycle-resolved digital imaging and high spatial resolution visualization with two-color pyrometry tool were used to follow in detail the flame front propagation and related phenomena. In particular the inception of diffusion-controlled flames near the valves and on the cylinder walls was studied. These flames induced the in-cylinder formation of unburned hydrocarbons and soot particles and the following exhaust emissions The optical data were correlated with conventional combustion pressure measurements and particulate exhaust emission ones. The effect of three way catalyst was investigated too.

A low-cost solution based on fuel injection strategies was investigated to optimize the combustion process in a boosted port fuel injection spark ignition (PFI SI) engine. The goal was to reduce the fuel consumption and pollutant emissions while maintaining performance. The effect of fuel injection was analyzed for the closed and open valve conditions, and the multiple injection strategies (MIS) based on double and triple fuel injection in the open-valve condition. The tests were performed on an optical accessible single-cylinder PFI SI engine equipped with an external boost device. The engine was operated at full load and with a stoichiometric ratio equivalent to that of commercial gasolines. Optical techniques based on 2D-digital imaging were used to follow the flame propagation from the flame kernel to late combustion phase. In particular, the diffusion-controlled flames near the valves and cylinder walls, due to fuel deposition, were studied. In these conditions, the presence of soot was measured by two-color pyrometry, and correlated with engine parameters and exhaust emissions measured by conventional methods. The open valve fuel injection strategies demonstrated better combustion process efficiency than the closed ones. They provided very low soot levels in the combustion chamber and engine exhaust, and a reduction in specific fuel consumption. The multiple injection strategies proved to be the best solution in terms of performance, soot concentration, and fuel consumption.

In this paper, low-cast solutions were proposed to reduce the fuel consumption in a boosted port fuel injection spark ignition (FF1 SV engine, taking into account the engine performances and the pollutants emission. To this purpose, the optical characterization of the fuel injection and of the combustion process was carried out in a FF1 SI engine. The experiments were performed on a partially transparent single-cylinder SI engine, equipped with a four valve head and an external boost device. The intake manifold was optically accessible through three holes that allowed the introduction of an endoscope and of optical fibres. The standard injection condition planned by the engine manufacturer was investigated, it consisted in the fuel injection at 3.5 bar when the intake valves were closed. Moreover, the fuel injection with open intake valves was tested; 3.5 and 6.5 bar fuel pressures were studied for open and closed valves conditions. Optical techniques based on 2D-digital imaging were used to follow the fuel injection spray in the intake manifold and the flame propagation in the combustion chamber. The results of in-cylinder optical investigations were correlated with the engine performances and with the exhaust emissions.

The particles al the exhaust of two Port Fuel Injection Spark Ignition (PFI-SI) engines were characterised in terms of number size distribution and chemical properties. Optical techniques based on the Laser Induced Incandescence (LII) and on the Broadband Ultraviolet - Visible Extinction and Scattering Spectroscopy (BUVESS) were applied. The optical results were compared with those obtained by Electrical Low Pressure Impactor (ELPI). The aim of the work was the characterisation of the nanoparticles emitted by Port Fuel Injection Spark Ignition (PFI - SI) engines in terms of number size distribution and chemical-physical properties. Two PFI - SI engines were used for the experiments: a four-cylinder engine and a research optically accessible single cylinder engine. The experiments were performed al the exhaust of a multi-cylinder SI engine equipped with a three way catalyst (TWC) and in the combustion chamber and at the exhaust of a single-cylinder optical engine. High number concentrations of nanoparticles (D < 50 nm) were detected. The presence of carbonaceous particles al the exhausts was due lo the ignition of the fuel film deposits on the intake valves and on the cylinder walls. This was demonstrated by the optical measurements performed in the combustion chamber of the research engine. Different engine operating conditions were considered.

Future stringent legislation on emissions in combination with the market request of an increase in engine efficiency and optimization poses a great challenge to the engine and components manufacturers. The technologies developed in the last years for Spark Ignition (SI) engines such as turbocharging and variable valve actuation are not able to totally satisfy the future normative. More progress stilt has to be mode in terms of in-cylinder combustion process and efficiency. The aim of this paper is the optimisation of a boosted SI engine in terms of performance, fuel consumption and pollutants emissions with low costs. The experimental activity was carried out on a port fuel Injection SI optical engine, equipped with a commercial four-valve head. Innovative injection strategies were tested: in particular, single and double injections were performed when the intake valves were open. Optical techniques based on 2D-digital imaging were used lo follow the fuel injection in the intake manifold and simultaneously the flame propagation in the combustion chamber. Conventional measurements of engine parameters and exhaust emissions completed the experimental investigations. The tests demonstrated that the double injection strategies were characterized by higher combustion process efficiency than single injection on. The injection splitting resulted a suitable solution for the reduction in pollutants concentration in the combustion chamber and at the exhaust with a good compromise between performance and fuel consumption.

Objective: To determine the incidence and clinical effects of antibodies that develop during treatment with natalizumab. Methods: In two randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies (natalizumab safety and efficacy in relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis [MS, AFFIRM] and safety and efficacy of natalizumab in combination with interferon β-1a [INFβ1a] in patients with relapsing remitting MS [SENTINEL]) of patients with relapsing multiple sclerosis, blood samples were obtained at baseline and every 12 weeks to determine the presence of antibodies against natalizumab. Antibodies to natalizumab were measured using an ELISA. Patients were categorized as “transiently positive” if they had detectable antibodies (≥0.5 μg/mL) at a single time point or “persistently positive” if they had antibodies at two or more time points ≥6 weeks apart. Results: In the AFFIRM study, antibodies were detected in 57 of 625 (9%) of natalizumab-treated patients: Twenty (3%) were transiently positive and 37 (6%) were persistently positive. Persistently positive patients showed a loss of clinical efficacy as measured by disability progression ( p ≤ 0.05), relapse rate ( p = 0.009), and MRI ( p ≤ 0.05) compared with antibody-negative patients. In transiently positive patients, full efficacy was achieved after approximately 6 months of treatment, the time when patients were becoming antibody negative. The incidence of infusion-related adverse events was significantly higher in persistently positive patients. Results of SENTINEL were similar to AFFIRM, except with regard to sustained disability progression; differences between persistently positive and antibody-negative patients were not statistically significant. Conclusions: The incidence of persistent antibody positivity associated with natalizumab is 6%. Reduced clinical efficacy is apparent in persistently positive patients. Patients with a suboptimal clinical response or persistent infusion-related adverse events should be considered for antibody testing. Objective To report the relationship between disease activity and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in relapsing multiple sclerosis, and the impact of natalizumab. Methods HRQoL data were available from 2,113 multiple sclerosis patients in natalizumab clinical studies. In the Natalizumab Safety and Efficacy in Relapsing Remitting Multiple Sclerosis (AFFIRM) study, patients received natalizumab 300mg (n = 627) or placebo (n = 315); in the Safety and Efficacy of Natalizumab in Combination with Interferon Beta-1a in Patients with Relapsing Remitting Multiple Sclerosis (SENTINEL) study, patients received interferon beta-1a (IFN-β-1a) plus natalizumab 300mg (n = 589), or IFN-β-1a plus placebo (n = 582). The Short Form-36 (SF-36) and a subject global assessment visual analog scale were administered at baseline and weeks 24, 52, and 104. Prespecified analyses included changes from baseline to week 104 in SF-36 and visual analog scale scores. Odds ratios for clinically meaningful improvement or worsening on the SF-36 Physical Component Summary (PCS) and Mental Component Summary were calculated. Results Mean baseline SF-36 scores were significantly less than the general US population and correlated with Expanded Disability Status Scale scores, sustained disability progression, relapse number, and increased volume of brain magnetic resonance imaging lesions. Natalizumab significantly improved SF-36 PCS and Mental Component Summary scores at week 104 in AFFIRM. PCS changes were significantly improved by week 24 and at all subsequent time points. Natalizumab-treated patients in both studies were more likely to experience clinically important improvement and less likely to experience clinically important deterioration on the SF-36 PCS. The visual analog scale also showed significantly improved HRQoL with natalizumab. Interpretation HRQoL was impaired in relapsing multiple sclerosis patients, correlated with severity of disease as measured by neurological ratings or magnetic resonance imaging, and improved significantly with natalizumab. The present paper discusses the experimental investigations on the flame induced by fuel film deposition ignition in a single cylinder, ported fuel injection, four-stroke, over-boosted spark-ignition engine with a four-valve production head. The engine was optically accessible and equipped with a transparent quartz window in the bottom of the combustion chamber. 2D-digital imaging and UV-visible natural emission spectroscopy were used to follow the flame propagation in the combustion chamber. Two colour pyrometers were applied to evaluate flame temperature and soot concentration. Particulate matter and soot primary particles diameters were measured and correlated with the soot amount produced in the combustion chamber. The effect of the intake air pressure and injection phasing was investigated. Optical setup for spectroscopic measurements and visible digital imaging, visible flame emission detected in the chamber for the selected operating conditions, visible emission spectra measured at 60 CAD ASOS in the chamber, soot concentration measured at the selected operating conditions, integral soot concentration measured at the selected operating conditions, particulate mass concentration measured by the Opacimeter and particles number concentration measured by LII at the engine exhaust are presented in the paper.

Scopo del lavoro è stata la caratterizzazione del particolato allo scarico di un motore diesel Common Rail di nuova generazione, a tale fine sono state utilizzate una tecnica non convenzionale di tipo ottico ed una basata sulla classificazione delle particelle in base al diametro aerodinamico. Per ogni condizione operativa selezionata, è stato valutato l'effetto del ricircolo dei gas esausti (EGR) sul diametro medio e sulla funzione di distribuzione delle particelle. La tecnica di diagnostica ottica utilizzata è basata sull'Incandescenza Laser-Indotta (LII), essa ha permesso la valutazione dei diametri delle particelle primarie carboniose allo scarico del motore. I risultati della tecnica LII sono stati confrontati con quelli ottenuti da strumentazioni commerciali: Electrical Low Pressure Impactor (ELPI). L'ELPI ha permesso la determinazione della funzione di distribuzione delle dimensioni senza però fornire informazioni riguardo alla natura chimica delle particelle e lavorando in condizioni di diluizione anche spinta. La tecnica ottica presenta il vantaggio di essere non intrusiva, di fornire risultati in tempi estremamente brevi e consente di ottenere informazioni riguardo alle particelle primarie di natura carboniosa emesse dal motore. LII, inoltre, non presenta la necessità di introdurre diluizione; questo assicura che non avvengano alterazioni della morfologia delle particelle come invece accade utilizzando sistemi che lavorano sul diluito.

Background Interferon beta is used to modify the course of relapsing multiple sclerosis. Despite interferon beta therapy, many patients have relapses. Natalizumab, an α 4 integrin antagonist, appeared to be safe and effective alone and when added to interferon beta-1a in preliminary studies. Methods We randomly assigned 1171 patients who, despite interferon beta-1a therapy, had had at least one relapse during the 12-month period before randomization to receive continued interferon beta-1a in combination with 300 mg of natalizumab (589 patients) or placebo (582 patients) intravenously every 4 weeks for up to 116 weeks. The primary end points were the rate of clinical relapse at 1 year and the cumulative probability of disability progression sustained for 12 weeks, as measured by the Expanded Disability Status Scale, at 2 years. Results Combination therapy resulted in a 24 percent reduction in the relative risk of sustained disability progression (hazard ratio, 0.76; 95 percent confidence interval, 0.61 to 0.96; P = 0.02). Kaplan–Meier estimates of the cumulative probability of progression at two years were 23 percent with combination therapy and 29 percent with interferon beta-1a alone. - Abstract
Two different optical techniques for detection, sizing and counting nanoparticles were applied to undiluted exhaust from 16 v - 1900 cc Common-Rail diesel engine upstream and downstream of a Catalyzed Diesel Particulate Filter (CDPF): Broadband Ultraviolet-Visible Extinction and Scattering Spectroscopy (BUVESS) and Laser-Induced Incandescence (LII). They are powerful "in situ" and non-intrusive techniques; they are able to measure mass concentration and size of particles, considering their chemical properties. BUVESS overcomes the intrinsic limitations of single wavelength techniques because it takes advantage of data at several wavelengths to retrieve primary particle size distribution. LII measures mean size of primary particles with a large dynamic range, not limited by aggregate size and by complex retrieving procedure. In this work, different engine operating conditions were selected in order to evaluate dynamic range of the techniques with respect to the low-mass particulate emission. The optical results were compared with those obtained by conventional methods like sampling of Particulate Matter for mass concentration and Electrical Low Pressure Impactor (ELPI) for sizing.
