2. How do media talk about the Covid-19 pandemic? Metaphorical thematic clustering in Italian online newspapers

Abstract

The contribution presents a study on figurative language of the first months of the COVID-19 crisis in Italian online newspapers. Particularly, we contrast topics and metaphorical language used by journalists in the first and second phase of the government response to the pandemic in Spring 2020. The analysis is conducted on a journalistic corpus collected between February 24th and June 3rd, 2020. The analysis is performed using both quantitative and qualitative approaches, combining Structural Topic Modelling (Roberts et al. 2016), Conceptual Metaphor Theory (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980), and qualitative-corpus based metaphor analysis (Charteris-Black, 2004). We find a significant shift in topics discussed across Phase 1 and Phase 2, and interesting overlaps in topic-specific metaphors. Using qualitative corpus analysis, we present a more in-depth case study discussing metaphorical collocations of the topics of Economy and Society

10. Doubly-periodic instability pattern in a smectic A liquid crystal

Abstract

We report the observation of a doubly-periodic surface defect-pattern in the liquid crystal 8CB, formed during the nematic--smectic A phase transition. The pattern results from the antagonistic alignment of the 8CB molecules, which is homeotropic at the surface and planar in the bulk of the sample cell. Within the continuum Landau-deGennes theory of smectic liquid crystals, we find that the long period (~10 \mu m) of the pattern is given by the balance between the surface anchoring and the elastic energy of curvature wall defects. The short period (~1 \mu m) we attribute to a saddle-splay distortion, leading to a non-zero Gaussian curvature and causing the curvature walls to break up., Comment: revised version with references and connections added to attract attention of a broad readership

Abstract

Aims A previous randomized study demonstrated that the subcutaneous implantable cardioverter defibrillator (S-ICD) was noninferior to transvenous ICD with respect to device-related complications and inappropriate shocks. However, that was performed prior to the widespread adoption of pulse generator implantation in the intermuscular (IM) space instead of the traditional subcutaneous (SC) pocket. The aim of this analysis was to compare survival from device-related complications and inappropriate shocks between patients who underwent S-ICD implantation with the generator positioned in an IM position in comparison with an SC pocket. Methods and results We analysed 1577 consecutive patients who had undergone S-ICD implantation from 2013 to 2021 and were followed up until December 2021. Subcutaneous patients (n = 290) were propensity matched with patients of the IM group (n = 290), and their outcomes were compared. : During a median follow-up of 28 months, device-related complications were reported in 28 (4.8%) patients and inappropriate shocks were reported in 37 (6.4%) patients. The risk of complication was lower in the matched IM group than in the SC group [hazard ratio 0.41, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.17-0.99, P = 0.041], as well as the composite of complications and inappropriate shocks (hazard ratio 0.50, 95% CI 0.30-0.86, P = 0.013). The risk of appropriate shocks was similar between groups (hazard ratio 0.90, 95% CI 0.50-1.61, P = 0.721). There was no significant interaction between generator positioning and variables such as gender, age, body mass index, and ejection fraction. Conclusion Our data showed the superiority of the IM S-ICD generator positioning in reducing device-related complications and inappropriate shocks.

17. Dynamics of liquid crystalline domains in magnetic field

Abstract

We study microscopic single domains nucleating and growing within the coexistence region of the Isotropic (I) and Nematic (N) phases in magnetic field. By rapidly switching on the magnetic field the time needed to align the nuclei of sufficiently large size is measured, and is found to decrease with the square of the magnetic field. When the field is removed the disordering time is observed to last on a longer time scale. Questo studio si concentra sul vocalismo tonico di 12 apprendenti adulti di italiano L2 – 6 germanofoni e 6 romenofoni – che hanno vissuto almeno 6 mesi in Italia, paragonati a un numero congruo di soggetti madrelingua italiani. I primi risultati mostrano l’effetto dell’equivalence classification nel caso della pronuncia delle vocali semi-aperte italiane da parte degli apprendenti romeni. Dalle analisi acustiche è evidente come il loro grado di apertura risulti spesso semi-chiuso. Questo ci indica che i locutori romeni non sono sempre in grado di discriminare le opposizioni /e - ɛ/ e /o - ɔ/, d’altronde contrasti senza valore fonematico nella loro L1. Gli apprendenti tedeschi, invece, non hanno nessuna difficoltà a produrre le vocali semi-aperte. A livello acustico, per alcuni locutori tedeschi è stata evidenziata una sottile differenza nella pronuncia delle /e/ e /u/ italiane, anche se statisticamente non significativa. Usando modelli stocastici e tecniche di clustering si è potuto osservare che generalmente una pronuncia più simile a quella dei parlanti italiani si ha nel caso degli apprendenti che vivono da più di 48 mesi in Italia, che usano principalmente l’italiano per comunicare, che hanno ricevuto lezioni esplicite di pronuncia e che hanno un livello alto di competenze linguistiche in italiano. L’età della prima esposizione all’italiano non risulta statisticamente significativa. Questo dato potrebbe indicare una rilevanza maggiore della qualità e della quantità dell’input nell’apprendimento dei tratti segmentali, con implicazioni anche nell’insegnamento dell’italiano a stranieri. The acquisition of the Italian vowel system: an instrumental study on German and Romanian learners This paper investigates the acquisition of stressed vowels in L2 Italian by 6 German and 6 Romanian adult learners, who had lived in Italy for at least 6 months at the time they were recorded. In order to ensure comparability and make inferences, we examined them in comparison to 6 native Italian speakers in the same age range. The first result of this study indicates a notable effect of “equivalence classification” regarding the Romanian learners’ pronunciation of the Italian open-mid vowels. Fine-grained acoustic analyses reveal that their degree of vowel openness is often mid-close. This suggests that Romanian learners may not be able to easily perceive and produce the /e - ɛ/ and /o - ɔ/ contrasts, which in fact have no phonemic value in their L1. German learners, however, experience no difficulty with open-mid vowels. On another note, acoustically, it seems that pronunciation of Italian [e] and [u] displays peculiar values for some German speakers, even if these differences are not statistically significant. Statistical models and clustering techniques show that, generally, learners produce Italian vowels more accurately if they have lived in Italy for at least 48 months, if they mainly use Italian to communicate, if they have received specific pronunciation training in Italian and if they have a high level of language skills in Italian. The age of onset does not seem to have any statistically significant effect on the correctness of vowel pronunciation. This fact might suggest a relevant role of input quality and quantity for vowel acquisition, which could have implications on teaching Italian to L2 learners.

Abstract

Due to its peculiar geopolitical layout, Ancona is connoted by a manifold linguistic profile – particularly for what concerns the consonantal system. However, this area has been so far scarcely investigated from a phonetic perspective. In this work, we propose the first acoustic description of selected consonants, as spoken in the local Italian variety: /p, t, k, s/. Literature unanimously reports that the local dialect is characterized by: a) the consonantal weakening of northern origin, which provokes voicing of /p, t, k, s/ in intervocalic position and degemination; b) the affrication of /s/ after /l, n, r/ – typical of other areas in central Italy. The aim is to verify whether these phenomena are attested also in the Italian variety spoken in Ancona. For this purpose, we conducted an acoustic analysis on spontaneous productions of 12 adult subjects (6 males and 6 females). While the sonorization of intervocalic /s/, which occurs in both northern and standard Italian pronunciations with all the well-known exceptions, is regular, the sonorization/lenition of voiceless plosives and degemination do not surface systematically. Presumably, these traits are perceived – more or less consciously – as socio-phonetic markers, thus mostly avoided in the pronunciation of Italian. At phonetic level, the dialectal interference is however statistically more pervasive in the male sample.

Abstract

Publicly available multi-omic databases, in particular if associated with medical annotations, are rich resources with the potential to lead a rapid transition from high-throughput molecular biology experiments to better clinical outcomes for patients. In this work, we propose a model for multi-omic data integration (i.e. genetic variations, gene expression, genome conformation and epigenetic patterns), which exploits a multi-layer network approach to analyse, visualize and obtain insights from such biological information, in order to use achieved results at a macroscopic level.Using this representation, we can describe how driver and passenger mutations accumulate during the development of diseases providing, for example, a tool able to characterise the evolution of cancer. Indeed, our test case concerns the MCF-7 breast cancer cell line, before and after the stimulation with estrogen, since many datasets are available for this case study. In particular, the integration of data about cancer mutations, gene functional annotations, genome conformation, epigenetic patterns, gene expression and metabolic pathways in our multi-layer representation will allow a better interpretation of the mechanisms behind a complex disease such as cancer. Thanks to this multi-layer approach, we focus on the interplay of chromatin conformation and cancer mutations in different pathways, such as metabolic processes, that are very important for tumour development. Working on this model, a variance analysis can be implemented to identify normal variations within each omics and to characterize, by contrast, variations that can be accounted to pathological samples compared to normal ones. This integrative model can be used to identify novel biomarkers and to provide innovative omic-based guidelines for treating many diseases, improving the efficacy of decision trees currently used in clinic.

Introduction (Aim) To preoperatively differentiate the site of origin outflow tract ventricular arrhythmias (OT-VA) it is of utmost importance for procedure planning yet challenging for those with a precordial transition (PT) at lead V3: close-proximity anatomical structures produce similar VA morphologies, thus leading to possible misdiagnosis. We sought to create an ECG algorithm that could be accurate and useful in overcoming this problem. Methods and Results 74 consecutive patients (Pts) with OT-VA who underwent successful radio-frequency catheter ablation (V3 PT 60.8%) were enrolled. The ECG characteristics of the first 30 Pts were analyzed (retrospective cohort); those with a PT at lead V3 underwent activation-mapping of both OT to ensure a correct diagnosis. LV-OT and RV-OT groups shared similar characteristics, including BMI and BSA. Above all ECG measurements, the V3 duration index (DI) and amplitude percentage, both calculated with the formula [R\(R+S)]*100 (computing duration and amplitude measurements respectively), showed the greatest AUC. A V3 DI < 50% established a certain diagnosis of origin at RV-OT (sensitivity 86.7%, specificity 100%, PPV 100%, NPV 88.2%; AUC 0.931). If the V3 DI was ≥ 50%, a V3 R wave percentage ≥ 50% established a certain diagnosis of origin at LV-OT (sensitivity 86.7%, specificity 100%, PPV 100%, NPV 88.2%, AUC 0.951). While a direct study of the RV-OT or LV-OT is suggested in these first two cases, few classification errors occurred only in the rare event of a V3 DI ≥ 50% with a V3 R wave percentage < 50% (Figure 1). In the prospective cohort, the two indices were confirmed to have the two best AUCs (0.992 and 0.986, respectively), and the algorithm showed an accuracy of 95.45%. Since the aortic cusps are structures posterior to RV-OT, therefore further away from V2, these foci more frequently show a QRS onset at ≥ V3; a characteristic which in our series was associated with an odds ratio for LV-OT origin of 4.1 [95% CI 1.47 – 11.39], p = 0.007. Using the transition ratio, we found a statistical significance only in lead V3, with a cut-off of ≥ 1 for predicting an LV-OT origin (LV-OT vs. RV-OT: 7.70 ± 12.75 vs. 0.70 ± 0.55, p < 0.001; AUC 0.898). Analyzing the overall case series, we can generalize the following: duration and amplitude indices showed an increasing AUC passing from lead V1 to V3 (Figure 2). The indices based on the complete measurement of the wave R compared to the QRS showed better AUCs than those on partial measures in V2 and V3: the duration index was better than the deflection index, as well as the amplitude percentage was better than the amplitude ratio. Conclusions The usefulness of the algorithm lies in providing preoperatively two assured outcomes in most cases (86.36%), allowing to limit the procedure to one OT directly - even in the event of a V3 PT - while it can select a small subgroup of complex Pts in which a study of both OT is recommended.

Abstract

Definition of the optimal pneumococcal vaccine strategy in HIV-infected adults is still under evaluation. We aimed to compare immunogenicity and safety of the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) versus the 23-valent polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23) in HIV-infected adults.We performed a pilot, prospective controlled study enrolling HIV-infected pneumococcal vaccine-naïve outpatients, aged 18-65 years with CD4 counts ≥200 cells/μL. Eligible subjects were recruited into two parallel groups: group 1 (n = 50) received two doses of PCV13 eight weeks apart, and group 2 (n = 50) received one dose of PPSV23, as part of their standard of care. Anti-pneumococcal capsular polysaccharide immunoglobulin G concentrations were quantified by ELISA at baseline, 8, 24 and 48 weeks. Clinical and viro-immunological follow-up was performed at the same time points. Unvaccinated, age-matched HIV-negative adults (n = 100) were also enrolled as baseline controls.Pre-vaccination specific IgG titers for each pneumococcal antigen did not differ between study groups but they were constantly lower than those from the HIV-negative controls. After immunization, significant increases in IgG titers were observed in both study groups at each time point compared to baseline, but response to serotype 3 was blunted in group 1. Antibody titers for each antigen did not differ between study groups at week 48. Overall, the proportion of subjects achieving seroprotection and seroconversion to all serotypes was comparable between groups. A marked decrease in IgG levels over time was observed with both vaccines. No relevant adverse reactions were reported in either group.In this population with favorable immune profile, no relevant differences were observed in immunogenicity between PCV13 and PPSV23. Con il d.l. n. 76 del 16 luglio 2020, c.d. decreto semplificazioni, convertito con l. n. 120 dell’11 settembre 2020, il governo ha voluto realizzare un «intervento organico volto alla semplificazione dei procedimenti amministrativi, all’eliminazione e alla velocizzazione di adempimenti burocratici, alla digitalizzazione della pubblica amministrazione, al sostegno all’economia verde e all’attività di impresa»; a questi fini, tra l’altro, «viene definito in modo più puntuale il reato di abuso d’ufficio, affinché i funzionari pubblici abbiano certezza su quali sono gli specifici comportamenti puniti dalla legge» Il reato di abuso d’ufficio viene quindi nuovamente riformato – è la quarta versione dal 1930 ad oggi – nella direzione, già intrapresa con la riforma del 1997, di una ulteriore e maggiormente tassativa delimitazione della condotta punibile. Questo almeno è l’intento dichiarato, in funzione di una esplicita lotta alla c.d. “amministrazione difensiva” e alla “paura della firma”.
