Abstract

We discuss the advantages of a spline-based freeform shape optimization approach using the example of a multi-tapered coaxial balun connected to a spiral antenna. The underlying simulation model is given in terms of a recently proposed isogeometric integral equation formulation, which can be interpreted as a high-order generalization of the partial element equivalent circuit method. We demonstrate a significant improvement in the optimized design, i.e., a reduction in the magnitude of the scattering parameter over a wide frequency range.

Abstract

The real-time monitoring of the structural displacement of the Vacuum Vessel (VV) of thermonuclear fusion devices caused by electromagnetic (EM) loads is of great interest. In this paper, Model Order Reduction (MOR) is applied to the Integral Equation Methods (IEM) and the Finite Elements Method (FEM) to develop Electromagnetic and Structural Reduced Order Models (ROMs) compatible with real-time execution which allows for the real-time monitoring of strain and displacement in critical positions of Tokamaks machines. Low-rank compression techniques based on hierarchical matrices are applied to reduce the computational cost during the offline stage when the ROMs are constructed. Numerical results show the accuracy of the approach and demonstrate the compatibility with real-time execution in standard hardware.

Abstract

This contribution investigates the connection between isogeometric analysis and integral equation methods for full-wave electromagnetic problems up to the low-frequency limit. The proposed spline-based integral equation method allows for an exact representation of the model geometry described in terms of non-uniform rational B-splines without meshing. This is particularly useful when high accuracy is required or when meshing is cumbersome for instance during optimization of electric components. The augmented electric field integral equation is adopted and the deflation method is applied, so the low-frequency breakdown is avoided. The extension to higher-order basis functions is analyzed and the convergence rate is discussed. Numerical experiments on academic and realistic test cases demonstrate the high accuracy of the proposed approach.

Abstract

This contribution investigates the connection between Isogeometric Analysis (IgA) and the Partial Element Equivalent Circuit (PEEC) method for electrostatic problems. We demonstrate that using the spline-based geometry concepts from IgA allows for extracting circuit elements without a meshing step. Moreover, the proposed IgA-PEEC method converges for complex geometries up to three times faster than the conventional PEEC approach and, in turn, it requires a significantly lower number of degrees of freedom to solve a problem with comparable accuracy. The resulting method is closely related to the isogeometric boundary element method. However, it uses lowest-order basis functions to allow for straightforward physical and circuit interpretations. The findings are validated by an analytical example with complex geometry, i.e., significant curvature, and by a realistic model of a surge arrester.

12. Acceptability and Feasibility of the World Health Organization's Caregiver Skills Training Implemented in the Italian National Health System

Abstract

The Caregiver Skills Training programme is an evidence-informed group intervention developed by the World Health Organization to counter the treatment gap for neurodevelopmental disorders in children. We examined feasibility and acceptability of Caregiver Skills Training in public child neuropsychiatry services in Italy. Following a formative adaptation process and a pre-pilot implementation, the programme was piloted in six centres. Caregivers of children (2-5 years) with autism spectrum disorder were randomised to either Caregiver Skills Training (n = 43) or treatment as usual (n = 43). Professionals' and caregivers' experiences in the treatment arm were examined with focus groups and questionnaires. The programme was largely considered acceptable, relevant and feasible. Specific implementation challenges and suggestions for optimising the package are discussed.

Abstract

Lithium-ion battery packs are usually composed of hundreds of cells arranged in series and parallel connections. The proper functioning of these complex devices requires suitable Battery Management Systems (BMSs). Advanced BMSs rely on mathematical models to assure safety and high performance. While many approaches have been proposed for the management of single cells, the control of multiple cells has been less investigated and usually relies on simplified models such as equivalent circuit models. This paper addresses the management of a battery pack in which each cell is explicitly modelled as the Single Particle Model with electrolyte and thermal dynamics. A nonlinear Model Predictive Control (MPC) is presented for optimally charging the battery pack while taking voltage and temperature limits on each cell into account. Since the computational cost of nonlinear MPC grows significantly with the complexity of the underlying model, a sensitivity-based MPC (sMPC) is proposed, in which the model adopted is obtained by linearizing the dynamics along a nominal trajectory that is updated over time. The resulting sMPC optimizations are quadratic programs which can be solved in real-time even for large battery packs (e.g. fully electric motorbike with 156 cells) while achieving the same performance of the nonlinear MPC., Comment: Will be submitted to Journal of Power Sources

Abstract

Extreme pressures and temperatures are known to drastically affect the chemistry of iron oxides resulting in numerous compounds forming homologous series $n$FeO$\cdot m$Fe$_2$O$_3$ and the appearance of FeO$_2$. Here, based on the results of \emph{in situ} single-crystal X-ray diffraction, M\"ossbauer spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and DFT+dynamical mean-field theory calculations we demonstrate that iron in high pressure cubic FeO$_2$ and isostructural FeO$_2$H$_{0.5}$ is ferric (Fe$^{3+}$), and oxygen has a formal valence less than two. Reduction of oxygen valence from 2, common for oxides, down to 1.5 can be explained by a formation of a localized hole at oxygen sites.

31. A Fast Integral Equation <inline-formula><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$J-\varphi$</tex-math></inline-formula> Formulation for Superconducting Structures

Abstract

This article presents an integral equation method based on the current–potential ($\mathbf {J}-\varphi _{e}$) formulation, for the solution of the eddy currents problem in superconducting structures. Two efficient methods for storing and manipulating the fully populated matrices resulting from the discretization of the integral equation are proposed in this work. These approaches leverage hierarchical ($\mathcal {H}$) matrices and the fast Fourier transform technique, tailored for voxelized structures. These techniques drastically reduce the computational cost of the numerical simulations. The proposed approach is compared to existing methods, as the $\mathbf {H}-\varphi _{m}$ formulation, and is efficiently applied to calculate the power losses for a realistic high-temperature superconductor coil.

32. TopIE: An Integral Equation Tool for Topology Optimization in Electromagnetics

Abstract

Topology optimization for the design of electromagnetic (EM) devices has recently garnered significant interest, thanks to advancements in additive manufacturing techniques that enable the fabrication of intricate geometries. This has opened up new possibilities for using integral equation (IE) methods to solve EM problems, particularly in the analysis of inductive power transfer (IPT) devices. In this context, we introduce a novel topology optimization tool called TopIE, which is built upon the IE method for EM problem solutions. TopIE adopts the logic of topology optimization of binary structures (TOBSs), a sensitivity-based approach that leverages binary design variables to clearly differentiate the material properties within the design domain. The tool is specifically used for optimizing IPT devices, and sample implementations of the method are made publicly available. By combining the power of topology optimization and IE methods, TopIE offers a promising avenue for enhancing the design and performance of EM devices.

41. Ecosystem services concept: Challenges to its integration in government organizations.

Abstract

• We interviewed government organizations' actors to investigate the barriers to ES concept implementation. • Integration into organizations is limited by confusion in terminology and difficulties in ES evaluation. • Operationalization across fragmented organizations, sectors and scales is considered complex to resolve. • Organizational prioritization of ES associated with wealth creation is a challenge due to related trade-offs. • A common cognitive and technical framework could bridge organizations towards a shared understanding of ES. The ecosystem services (ES) concept is well-established in the scientific community but remains underutilized and poorly understood within government organizations. In this article, we analyze the barriers to integrating ES into relevant governmental operations in Quebec, Canada. According to the perspective expressed by eight governmental organizations' representatives, we analyze factors constraining the integration of the ES concept at the government level while suggesting ways forward. We found that despite the relevance of this concept in many areas ranging from planning to environment management, its operationalization faces challenges due to 1) confusion of terminology; 2) difficulties in evaluating and prioritizing ES; and 3) the complexity of operationalization in a context of interdependent practices. Moreover, the adoption of guidelines to implement the ES concept in governmental policies and programs is insufficient. Along with institutional and operational limitations, government organizations face structural constraints preventing the concept's full use, namely the fundamental of State and market. Our study shows that although the ES concept is apprehended in a utilitarian way for short-term goals within government organizations, it nonetheless holds the potential to raise awareness and promote enlightened decision-making on environmental benefits.
