The global population of European eel (Anguilla anguilla) is rapidly declining, and migration barriers in rivers are believed to be one of several key causes. While progress has been made in the development of bypass solutions, they are often constructed based on a limited knowledge of swimming behaviour. A bypass close to the stream bed is often recommended at fish passage facilities to accommodate downstream eel migration. The results of this recommendation are poorly studied, and the few studies that exist show varying bypass efficiencies. The current study used acoustic telemetry with depth sensors to explore the three-dimensional migratory behaviour of downstream-migrating silver eels. The eels were tracked as they approached a hydropower plant with a state-of-the-art angled bar rack and full-depth bypass. Downstream and upstream swimming differed in preferred vertical and lateral positions. During periods of local downstream movement, the density of observations was largest in the upper middle section, away from the river boundaries and in higher velocities. Conversely, when moving upstream, eels tended to avoid the upper layers of the middle part of the river, swimming closer to the riverbed and using the bank areas to a greater extent. Downstream-moving fish swam higher in the water column during night and in turbid conditions (high discharge). When approaching the impassable bar rack and the full-depth bypass, the eels searched most intensely but not exclusively along the bottom third of the rack, often exploring at new depths after changing direction. The impediment passage efficiency was 100% when both bypass solutions were considered. The study provides knowledge of the swimming behaviour of silver eels, which is relevant for the design of bypass solutions for eels at migration barriers.

Fish swimming performance is strongly influenced by flow hydrodynamics, but little is known about the relation between fine-scale fish movements and hydrodynamics based on in-situ investigations. In the presented study, we validated the etho-hydraulic fish swimming direction model presented in the River Mandal from Southern Norway, using similar behavioral and hydraulic data on salmon smolts from the River Orkla in Central Norway. The re-parametrized model explained the variation of the swimming direction of fish in the Orkla system in same degree as the original model performed in the Mandal system (R2: 84% in both cases). The transferability of the model when using it from one river to predict swimming direction in the other river was lower (R2: 21% and 26%), but nevertheless relatively high given that the two localities differed in hydraulic conditions. The analyses thus provide support for the fact that the identified hydraulic parameters and their interaction affected smolt behavior in a similar way at the two sites, but that local parametrization of the base model is required. The developed etho-hydraulic models can provide important insights into fish behavior and fish migration trajectories and can be developed into prediction models important for the future development of behavioral downstream migration solutions.

This article proposes and demonstrates a new classification system of fish population level effects of hydropeaking operations in rivers. The classification of impacts is developed along two axes; first, the hydromorphological effect axis assesses the ecohydraulic alterations in rivers introduced by rapid and frequent variations in flow and water level, second the vulnerability axis assesses the site-specific vulnerability of the fish population. Finally, the population level impact is classified into four classes from small to very large by combining the two axes. The system was tested in four rivers in Norway exposed to hydropeaking, and they displayed a range of outcomes from small to very large impacts on the salmon populations. The river with a relatively high base flow and ramping restrictions scored better than rivers with the lower base flow or limited ramping restrictions, indicating that hydropeaking effects can be mitigated while maintaining high hydropower flexibility. Most effect factors could easily be calculated from timeseries of discharge and water level, whereas the use of hydraulic models to estimate potential stranding areas may require more work. The vulnerability factors are mainly qualitative and depend more heavily on expert judgments and are thus more uncertain. The system was deemed suitable for the purpose of supporting management decisions for rivers exposed to hydropeaking operations. It evaluates the severity of the additional pressures due to hydropeaking operations and proved useful to identify mitigating measures. While the system was developed for Atlantic salmon river systems, it could be adapted to other species or systems.

Atlantic salmon is often a focal species of restoration efforts throughout the north Atlantic and it is therefore an excellent case study for how best to design programmes to address and mitigate threats and correct population declines. This perspective is written to promote the work that has been accomplished towards restoration of Atlantic salmon populations and synthesize how we believe the lessons can be used effectively to support efforts by management agencies to restore populations. We reviewed where restoration is needed for Atlantic salmon, agreed on definitions for three levels of successful restoration, and then applied these criteria to  published papers focused on Atlantic salmon restoration. We identified  successful examples of restoration among  papers reviewed and discussed what interventions led to success versus failure. We then addressed key questions about when hatchery stocking should be used as part of a restoration measure and whether local restoration efforts are enough when these wide-ranging species encounter broad-scale changes in the north Atlantic, specifically related to issues of climate change and to marine survival. We advise to avoid restoration as much as possible by protecting and managing existing populations and when restoration is necessary, problems should be identified and addressed in partnership with river users. With appropriate resources and research to resolve ongoing mysteries, restoration of lost Atlantic salmon populations is absolutely feasible. While many studies provide microscale relationships between fish and habitat characteristics, studies covering longer river reaches are scarce. Modern remote sensing techniques may enable new and effective ways of mapping and assessing mesoscale habitat characteristics. Using green LIDAR-derived bathymetry and hydraulic modelling, we tested how mesoscale depth and velocity were related to fish counts of adult European grayling (Thymallus thymallus L.) and brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) in 500 m river sections in three separate periods during the year. Using riverbank sinuosity from aerial images and a Froude number-based index from the hydraulic model as proxies for mesoscale spatial and hydraulic heterogeneity, we tested for temporal correlations with river section fish counts of adult European grayling and brown trout. Results showed that mesoscale mean depth and velocity were correlated to period fish counts of adult European grayling. Using mixed model analysis we found that riverbank sinuosity and the Froude number-based index were significantly correlated with river section occurrence of adult European grayling during spawning. The results can be used to assess how flow-induced changes and channel adjustments at the mesoscale level can influence access to and use of relevant habitats in rivers occupied by European grayling and brown trout. Genetic methods for the estimation of population size can be powerful alternatives to conventional methods. Close‐kin mark–recapture (CKMR) is based on the principles of conventional mark–recapture, but instead of being physically marked, individuals are marked through their close kin. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of CKMR for the estimation of spawner abundance in Atlantic salmon and how age, sex, spatial, and temporal sampling bias may affect CKMR estimates. Spawner abundance in a wild population was estimated from genetic samples of adults returning in 2018 and of their potential offspring collected in 2019. Adult samples were obtained in two ways. First, adults were sampled and released alive in the breeding habitat during spawning surveys. Second, genetic samples were collected from out‐migrating smolts PIT‐tagged in 2017 and registered when returning as adults in 2018. CKMR estimates based on adult samples collected during spawning surveys were somewhat higher than conventional counts. Uncertainty was small (CV, The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of close‐kin mark–recapture (CKMR) for the estimation of spawner abundance in Atlantic salmon and how age, sex, spatial, and temporal sampling bias may affect CKMR estimates. Our study showed that CKMR can be used to estimate spawner abundance in Atlantic salmon, with a moderate sampling effort, but a carefully designed sampling regime is required.

Repeat spawners constitute an important component of Atlantic salmon populations, but survival of post-spawning individuals (kelts) are often compromised by anthropogenic structures such as hydropower plants (HPPs). Potential effects of HPPs include migration delays and associated increased energy depletion, which potentially results in increased overall mortality. We combined a detailed 3D hydraulic model with high-resolution 3D tracking of tagged kelts (length 73&ndash, 104 cm) to obtain estimates of kelt movement through water. These estimates were then used in an energetics model to estimate hourly energy expenditure while negotiating the HPP area. Hourly kelt energy expenditure varied between 0.8 and 10.1 kJ &times, h&minus, 1 and was dependent on kelt length. Degree of additional energy depletion can amount to several percent of remaining energy content (our study indicates 4&ndash, 5 percentage points) potentially leading to reduced post-spawning survival. In turn, this can nullify the iteroparous breeding strategy and jeopardize long-term stability and persistence of Atlantic salmon populations inhabiting HPP rivers.

In 2017, Norway experienced an invasion of the Pacific salmonid pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) in numbers never before seen in rivers all along the coast. Significant numbers were also caught in other parts of northwestern Europe. Pink salmon has been observed in variable numbers in Norwegian waters in the summer and autumn of most years since 1960, after the first successful Russian introduction of pink salmon fry in rivers draining to the White Sea in northwest Russia in 1959. With the exception of 1960, pink salmon have been most abundant in odd years, based on the odd-year broodline of the 2-year life salmonid. Even-year fish has generally been less abundant, but in recent years, significant numbers of this broodline have also been caught. In this paper we review the available information on pink salmon in Norwegian rivers and discuss (1) to what extent the presence of this species in Norway has been driven by Russian introductions and natural reproduction in Russian, and lately in Norwegian, rivers, and (2) the likelihood of reproducing populations of pink salmon being established in more Norwegian rivers. Considering the continued propagule pressure in terms of adult pink salmon entering and spawning in Norwegian rivers, it is puzzling that self-propagating populations apparently only have been established in some rivers in the northernmost part of the country. The potential impact of pink salmon on native salmonids and river ecosystems is discussed briefly. Extensive research is required to understand the mechanisms that determine the fate of pink salmon as an alien species, and specifically the possible impact of pink salmon on native salmonids and the environment in the recipient rivers and in the ocean.

The spawning migration of Atlantic salmon has been characterized by tracking salmon carrying electronic tags as they ascend rivers, but still little is known about how natural obstacles such as waterfalls influence migratory behaviour and how such behaviours are mediated by various biotic (e.g., fish size) and abiotic (e.g., discharge, water temperature, and barometric pressure) factors. The Norwegian river Numedalslagen is interrupted by natural waterfalls ranging in height from 2 to 6 m. We tagged 113 Atlantic salmon with radio transmitters in the estuary and used stationary radio telemetry stations to track fish. Ninety‐one salmon were recorded in Numedalslagen, 39 of which remained in the river for spawning. Large salmon moved farther and faster upriver but also delayed longer and had lower daily probability to pass the second waterfall. Delay below and passage probability at the final, largest waterfall was affected by water discharge, wherein passage occurred when discharge was declining. Barometric pressure also influenced daily probability of ascent, albeit in opposite directions for each waterfall. Importantly, we also found that salmon with surgically implanted radio transmitters moved farther upriver on average and delayed less time below one of the waterfalls than those with externally attached transmitters. Although there is variance in timing arising from individual decision‐making, we showed that natural waterfalls delay progress of Atlantic salmon on their spawning migration and that both biotic (i.e., size) and abiotic (i.e., barometric pressure and discharge) factors influenced the salmon's decisions to pass waterfalls that they encounter.

The obstruction of fish migratory routes by hydroelectric facilities is worldwide one of the major threats to freshwater fishes. During downstream migration, fish may be injured or killed on the trash-racks or in the hydropower turbines. Fish-friendly trash-racks that combine both ecological and technical requirements are a solution to mitigate fish mortality at a low operational cost. This study presents results from an experimental investigation of head-losses and the hydrodynamic performance of six angled trash-rack types with 15 mm bar spacing, varying bar-setup (vertical-streamwise, vertical-angled and horizontal bars) and bar profiles (rectangular and drop shape) under steady flow conditions. The trash-racks were positioned at 30° to the wall of the flume and combined with a bypass at their downstream end. The impact of the different trash-rack types on the upstream flow field was characterized using Image based Volumetric 3-component Velocimetry (V3V) and at the bypass-entrance using an Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV). The results show that trash-racks with vertical-streamwise and horizontal oriented bars with drop-shape profiles have similar head-losses (13% difference), while trash-racks with vertical-angled bars provide 3–8 times larger head-losses compared to the remaining configurations. The velocity measurements showed that the highest flow velocities occurred for configurations with vertical-angled bars (0.67 m s−1 and 0.81 m s−1 on average, respectively). Turbulence related parameters (e.g. Reynolds shear stresses and Turbulent kinetic energy) were also investigated to evaluate the performance of the alternative trash-racks from both, engineering and ecological perspectives.

Anthropogenic structures in rivers are major threats for fish migration and effective mitigation is imperative given the worldwide expansion of such structures. Fish behaviour is strongly influenced by hydrodynamics, but little is known on the relation between hydraulics and fish fine scale-movement. We combined 3D Computational fluid dynamics modelling (CFD) with 2D and 3D fish positioning to investigate the relation between hydrodynamics and the downstream movement of Atlantic salmon smolts (Salmo salar). We show that fish use fine-scale flow velocity and turbulence as navigation cues of fine-scale movement behaviour. Tri-dimensional swimming speed and swimming direction can be explained by adjustments of fish to flow motion, which are linked to fish swimming mode. Fish diverge from the flow by swimming at speeds within or higher than their prolonged speeds (0.38–0.73 m s−1). Flow direction plays a pivotal role on fish swimming performance, with high upstream and downwards velocities impacting swimming the most. Turbulence is also influential, by benefiting swimming performance at low TKE (< 0.03 m2 s−2) or constraining it at higher levels. We show that fish behaviour is affected by interactions of several hydraulic variables that should be considered jointly.

The paper demonstrates the use of Bayesian networks in multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA) of environmental design alternatives for environmental flows (eflows) and physical habitat remediation measures in the Mandalselva River in Norway. We demonstrate how MCDA using multi-attribute value functions can be implemented in a Bayesian network with decision and utility nodes. An object-oriented Bayesian network is used to integrate impacts computed in quantitative sub-models of hydropower revenues and Atlantic salmon smolt production and qualitative judgement models of mesohabitat fishability and riverscape aesthetics. We show how conditional probability tables are useful for modelling uncertainty in value scaling functions, and variance in criteria weights due to different stakeholder preferences. There is no generic solution to establish safe passage of downstream migrating fish passed hydropower facilities and mitigation measures are species‐ and site‐specific. Development of solutions is thus often based on “trial and error” and modelling based approaches may significantly reduce cost and time to arrive at successful mitigation. Here we explore such an approach by combining data on fish migration and hydraulic modelling. First, we performed a positional telemetry study at a dammed section of a Norwegian river, where 100 Atlantic salmon smolts were tagged to track their downstream movement at the vicinity of a hydropower intake channel and bypass gates. An explanatory model was developed to explore mechanisms of migration route, into the intake towards the turbines or through the bypass gates. Next, flow conditions during the smolt run was numerically modelled to explore the physical environment of the tracked smolts. The joint results from the two approaches supported the general assumption that downstream migration is strongly influenced by flow patterns and showed that fish entering the study site closer to the riverbank where the intake channel is located were more likely to enter the intake due to the strong currents towards the intake. Finally, a suite of measures to guide salmon smolts past the hydropower intake were proposed based on the findings and local conditions and tested by hydraulic modelling. We found that most of the measures, which were likely candidates for field trials would most likely fail at improving safe passage, and only a rack type guiding boom was promising. The presented combination of telemetry migration data and hydraulic modelling illustrates the value of evaluation of mitigation measures prior to implementation. Habitat use of aquatic organisms is essential to evaluate effects of many environmental challenges like effects of hydro-power regulation, where stranding may occur under hydropeaking (rapid dewatering of shallow river areas). Experimental studies as well as observations from nature with juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) show that the proportion of the population that uses shallow depth was both independent of population density and decreasing with fish size. Experiments were conducted both in the presence and in absence of older fish, during day and night, and during all four seasons. Juvenile salmon from deep areas may therefore distribute into the shallow areas even when fish density becomes reduced. Thus, low density does not lead to reduced stranding risk and shallow areas may therefore function as a sink in a within-generation source-sink dynamic under a repeated hydropeaking scenario. Ce paradigme postule que les individus plus grands ou a` croissance plus rapide sont plus susceptibles de survivre que leurs conspécifiques plus petits ou a` croissance plus lente. Nous avons utilisé des données de capture de longue durée (25 ans) obtenues d’un piège dans la rivière Halselva, en Norvège, durant les migrations annuelles entre les milieux marins et d’eau douce. Des résultats semblables ont été obtenus pour les deux espèces. Il y a une corrélation positive entre la croissance durant le séjour en mer et les taux de retour, témoignant d’un lien entre un taux de survie plus élevé et la croissance. Le taux de croissance, la survie et la durée du séjour en mer des individus migrant pour la première fois sont corrélés, ce qui donne a` penser que des conditions ambiantes communes en mer influencent la productivité annuelle des poissons. [Traduit par la Rédaction] This study found empirical evidence supporting the “growth–survival” paradigm in the marine phase of Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) and brown trout (Salmo trutta). The paradigm postulates that larger or faster-growing individuals are more likely to survive than smaller or slower-growing conspecifics. The study employed long-term (25 year) capture data from a trap in the River Halselva in Norway during annual migration between marine and freshwater environments. Similar results were found for both species. Growth during the sea sojourn and return rates were positively correlated, linking increased survival with growth. Specific growth rate, survival, and duration of the sea sojourn of first-time migrants were correlated, suggesting that common environmental conditions at sea influence annual fish productivity. Freshwater and sea temperatures affected migration timing, whereas annual variation in marine growth and survival did not correlate with temperatures. This suggests that other factors such as variation in energy intake were the main source of annual growth variations. Moreover, the marine growth rate of the two species may signal annual overall fjord ecosystem production, especially related to their main prey.

Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) is an economically and culturally important species. Norway has more than 400 watercourses with Atlantic salmon and supports a large proportion of the world’s wild Atlantic salmon. Atlantic salmon are structured into numerous genetically differentiated populations, and are therefore managed at the population level. Long-distance migrations between freshwater and ocean habitats expose Atlantic salmon to multiple threats, and a number of anthropogenic factors have contributed to the decline of Atlantic salmon during the last decades. Knowledge on the relative importance of the different anthropogenic factors is vital for prioritizing management measures. We developed a semi-quantitative 2D classification system to rank the different anthropogenic factors and used this to assess the major threats to Norwegian Atlantic salmon. Escaped farmed salmon and salmon lice from fish farms were identified as expanding population threats, with escaped farmed salmon being the largest current threat. These two factors affect populations to the extent that they may be critically endangered or lost, with a large likelihood of causing further reductions and losses in the future. The introduced parasite Gyrodactylus salaris, freshwater acidification, hydropower regulation and other habitat alterations were identified as stabilized population threats, which have contributed to populations becoming critically endangered or lost, but with a low likelihood of causing further loss. Other impacts were identified as less influential, either as stabilized or expanding factors that cause loss in terms of number of returning adults, but not to the extent that populations become threatened. Management based on population specific reference points (conservation limits) has reduced exploitation in Norway, and overexploitation was therefore no longer regarded an important impact factor. An effect of hydropower and hydropeaking regulation in rivers is stranding of fish. Those fishes that survive stranding may experience stranding as a stressful situation. In four experimental stranding experiments (each with 6 individuals in 10 control and 10 treatment replicates), the energetic consequences of two forms of stranding (i.e. trapping and beaching) of juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) were investigated in summer and winter. Restricted food access in the experimental channels ensured that effects of hydropeaking could be revealed. Mean fish length ranged between 60 mm and 110 mm among experiments. Both during the winter and summer experiments fish did not grow in length, neither in the control nor in the treatment channels and fish lost body mass as well as body fat in all experiments (body fat in summer trapping experiment not determined). The four experiments revealed similar results: stranding did not affect growth or energy content. Despite the severity of the stranding and the resulting mortality, which was especially high during summer, no stranding related effects on fish performance could be detected. Competition for limited resources and the resulting density-dependent processes are key factors in driving stream salmonid population dynamics. Here we test for the combined effects of density and shelter availability on the movement of juvenile Atlantic salmon in a Norwegian river. Individually marked, hatchery reared salmon juveniles were released at 26 sites along a 2.5 km long stretch and recaptured after 12 months. The spatial variation in shelter availability and density of salmonids was quantified prior to the release. We found no effect of released fish number on the number of marked salmon moving more than 12.5 – 112.5 m away from their release site. However, the ratio of pre-experiment fish density per shelter was positively related to the number of movers. Thus, fish that were released at sites where the amount of shelter was low relative to the density of the pre-experiment population were more likely to move. These results support the prediction from smaller scale experimental studies that shelter availability may act to determine local carrying capacity in stream living salmonid populations. Centre for Environmental Design of Renewable Energy (CEDREN) is a research centre focusing on hydropower production and environmental impacts of hydropower. The main objective of CEDREN is to develop and communicate design solutions for renewable energy production that address environmental and societal challenges at local, regional, national and global levels. Environmental design means that planning, building and operation have to include technical, economic, environmental and socio‑political aspects throughout the whole life‑span of the project. Methods and tools to ensure environmental design are developed in CEDREN and applied to case studies in Norway and internationally. These methods and tools focus on finding physical and biological bottlenecks for affected species and ecosystems by mapping, modelling and analysis of both physical conditions and ecological status. CEDREN proposes different measures, tools and methods to improve the environmental conditions as well as how to maintain or increase the power production. In addition, a strong focus must be made on political governance to ensure more representative participation of relevant stakeholders in the process of finding the best technical, economic and political solutions for power production, the environment and the society. Key research findings used to develop relationships between physical factors like flow, flow fluctuations, water temperature, water velocity, water depth and water‑covered area and biological response will be shown. Examples of improved methods for better planning procedures with stakeholder engagement will be proposed. Examples of methods and tools for environmental design of hydropower will be given for several regulated rivers in Norway and abroad. © 2017. The performance and movements of juvenile Atlantic salmon Salmo salar exposed to variable water discharge (simulating hydropeaking) but with a stable water-covered area were studied in six experimental stream channels, both during the winter and summer. Thirty fish were stocked into each channel, and the growth, body fat and movements of the fish were followed for about 2.5 months in each season. During the winter, no effect of hydropeaking was documented on performance or movement. In the summer, fish experiencing hydropeaking had lower body mass, lower body fat, and higher movement rates than the control fish. In general, effect sizes were small, and the rapid and frequent changes in water discharge and water level in the present study had small effects on the performance of juvenile Atlantic salmon. The cumulative long-term effect at the population level is unknown, but a reduced growth rate of 10% and a reduction in body fat of 16% in the hydropeaking experiments in the summer might to some extent translate into increased smolt age and lower overwintering survival. a b s t r a c t In this paper, we present a spatially explicit individual-based mechanistic model for predicting the freshwater population abundance of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.). The model simulates the complete life-cycle at small spatial (∼50 m) and temporal (weekly) scales. Processes such as spawning, recruitment, mortality and movements are predicted using deterministic and stochastic functions, parameterized using relationships established from the literature and empirical observations. The model was used to simulate salmon population abundance within a river in western-central Norway (River Nausta). The sensitivity of population abundance to fry and parr carrying capacities, and parr and post-smolt densityindependent mortalities was analyzed. The optimally parameterized model predicted similar abundances and age compositions across the developmental stages of the population to those estimated from empirical observations within the river. The effect of carrying capacities and mortalities on abundance was strongest at the developmental stage at which they operated, but also affected the abundance of subsequent developmental stages or the progeny, suggesting negative (dampening) feedback mechanisms.

We explored the mechanisms of density-dependent growth in Arctic char ( Salvelinus alpinus ) by comparing the energetics of growth, consumption, and activity obtained under three replicated density treatments in a large-scale enclosure (90 m2 surface area) experiment. The enclosures permitted the entry of zooplankton and allowed char to feed on the bottom and at the surface of the lake. We found a negative (power) relationship between growth and density. Char consumption rate decreased linearly with increasing density. Growth efficiency was affected by fish density in a similar manner as growth rate. Finally, activity increased with fish density and was particularly high at high densities. Our findings illustrate the complexity of the relationships among consumption, activity, growth rates, and fish density and bring further evidence to the possible involvement of behavioural mechanisms in density-dependent processes, notably by modulating activity costs with density.

The spatial distribution of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar young-of-the-year (0+) and 1 year old parr (1+) from the 2006 spawning cohort in a 5125 m reach of the River Skauga in central Norway was documented. A high degree of similarity was found between the distribution of 0+ and 1+ parr based on catches at 205 transects sampled in both years. Cross-correlations and partial cross-correlations (correcting for habitat variables) confirmed significant positive association between the two distributions on a small spatial scale (within 100 m) and a clear pattern of decreasing correlation with distance.

In this study, cost effective (in terms of reducing loss of power production) measures for increasing bypass migration of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar were developed and tested by establishing statistical models for timing of smolt migration and favourable diversion of water to the bypass. Initial tracking of radio-tagged smolts showed very low bypass migration under normal hydropower operations. Bypass migration increased when bypass discharge was experimentally increased and a model was developed that described relationships between total river discharge, bypass diversion and smolt migration route. Further improvements were obtained by installing two strobe lights at the power-production tunnel entrance that increased bypass migration during the night, but not during daytime. According to the behaviour of radio-tagged fish, the implemented measures contributed to increasing the annual percentage of bypass migration from 11 to 64%, and according to model predictions to 60-74% when the hydropower facilities were operated according to the developed models. To ensure correct timing of discharge diversion a smolt migration model was developed based on environmental variables that could successfully predict the general pattern of migration timing. The concept presented for improving smolt migration past hydropower intakes should be applicable in many systems where migration past hydropower installations cannot easily be solved by screening systems.

Summary 1. The intensity of intraspecific competition may influence the growth of differently sized individuals to different extents. Measures of among-individual variation in growth and body size are commonly applied to assess such effects. The measure chosen is then supposed to control for the effect of mean (also influenced by competition) on variance [e.g. coefficient of variation (CV)]. 2. Although there is an appealing simplicity to this approach, interpretations of such data have some apparently unrecognised underlying complexities. Here we combine empirical data from salmonid fishes and simulations to illustrate this. 3. Simulations show that even if all individuals are equally affected by competition, CV of body mass will not be constant. In fact, the CV of body mass may either decrease or increase with increasing competition. 4. Using empirical data from growth experiments, where differences among replicates in mean growth was controlled by temperature rather than competitive intensity, we show that two salmonid fish species differ with respect to how SD growth scales with mean growth. Because this slope represents a possible null-hypothesis, and will rarely be known, observed relations between competitive intensity and SD or CV growth are unlikely to yield information regarding size-specific effects of competition. 5. Based on the empirical data, simulation results with respect to body mass variation showed that the relation between mean and CV final mass varied from positive to negative across species and scenarios. 6. Insights regarding size-specific competitive effects appear unlikely to be obtained from measures of variation in either growth or body size. If attempts to do so are made, a positive correlation between SD body size and measures of competitive intensity (e.g. population density) does suggest that smaller individuals are more influenced by increased competition. However, this will be an extremely conservative test, because the appropriate null-hypothesis is a negative correlation of unknown strength. 7. Future attempts to quantify relationships between body size and impacts of competitive intensity should employ more traditional analyses of variance on individual data (i.e. interactions between body size and competition on growth rates).

Summary 1. Timing of offspring arrival (i.e. hatching, birth or emergence from nests) is commonly shown to have strong effects on their performance through body size and prior residency effects, but less is known about how such effects differ among species. The strength of such effects tends to be related to competitive intensity (e.g. population density). Variation in timing effects among species may therefore be expected to be related to their competitive ability. 2. Here, we test this hypothesis by conducting sympatric and allopatric competition experiments in two ecologically similar salmonid species, Atlantic salmon and brown trout, at the onset of exogenous feeding. We first test the competitive ability of the two species in sympatric conditions in the absence of timing effects. We then test the strength of timing effects by manipulating this for the two species in allopatric conditions, and evaluate whether any difference in response to timing between the two species corresponds to species-specific competitive abilities. 3. In sympatry, trout outperformed salmon emerging at the same time, despite salmon being 32% larger at the time of emergence. Thus, trout was the stronger competitor. 4. In allopatric treatments, late emerging trout performed significantly poorer in terms of survival and growth than late emerging salmon. Further, dominant trout appeared better able to monopolise resources at higher competitive intensities than dominant salmon. There were also indications that population regulation was stronger in brown trout. Replicates with a high initial density of salmon ended up with twice the final density of low-density replicates, whereas trout ended up with similar final densities across treatments. 5. The results demonstrate that species-level differences in interspecific competitive ability corresponded with a higher intraspecific asymmetric competition among timing phenotypes, resulting in a higher penalty of emerging late in the more aggressive, dominant trout. Further, it suggests that intrinsic competitive abilities may affect the intensity of selection on offspring arrival, and thus likely affect evolution of phenological traits such as breeding time.

Successful transitions from relying on yolk to exogenous feeding may be strongly influenced by temperature conditions experienced both during embryonic development, through effects on juvenile phenotype, and during initiation of feeding. Here we simultaneously assess these two effects of temperature treatments (2, 5, 8, and 12 °C) in Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar ). Fry emerging from low incubation temperatures were smaller and had metabolized more energy prior to emergence, but had larger yolk sacs and higher mass specific energy levels, than those experiencing higher temperatures. After emergence, activity, feeding, and growth increased significantly with increasing temperature, but fry were able to initiate feeding and maintain positive growth at all four temperatures. Larger energy stores may provide an advantage when emerging at cold temperatures with a low potential for feeding activity, whereas having a large body size, which is primarily of importance in competitive interactions, may be less important owing to cryptic feeding and sheltering at low temperatures. However, the adaptive significance of the observed phenotypic response to incubation temperature remains untested.

International audience; We test whether the spatial distribution of spawning sites in a natural population is related to the density and individual growth rate of juvenile stream-dwelling salmonids. For this purpose, fine-scale data on the spatial distribution of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) nest sites, juvenile densities and body size, and habitat characteristics were combined. The area of nests summed over reaches of 25 m in length was positively correlated with local young-of-the-year (YOY) densities and was the strongest predictor of local densities. In turn, increased YOY densities were related to slower growth, and YOY density was the strongest predictor of YOY size. Measured habitat variables had little effect on YOY density over the spatial scale examined, which suggests that redistribution of YOY salmon according to habitat preferences was limited. The distribution of spawning sites was therefore the best predictor of local densities and subsequently YOY growth. Thus, during the YOY stage when dispersal is limited, patchy spawning distributions combined with local densitydependence may be the dominant factor responsible for spatial variation in growth. Résumé : Nous vérifions si la répartition spatiale des sites de fraie dans une population naturelle est reliée à la densité et au taux de croissance individuelle des jeunes salmonidés d'eau courante. Pour ce faire, nous avons combiné des données à échelle fine sur la répartition spatiale des sites de nidification de saumons atlantiques (Salmo salar), sur les densités et les tailles corporelles des jeunes et sur les caractéristiques de l'habitat. Il existe une corrélation positive entre la surface cumulée des nids sur des sections de 25 m de longueur et la densité locale des jeunes de l'année (YOY); c'est la meilleure variable prédictive des densités locales. Par ailleurs, les densités accrues de YOY sont reliées à une croissance ralentie et la densité des YOY est la meilleure variable prédictive de la taille des YOY. Les variables mesurées de l'habitat ont peu d'effet sur la densité des YOY à l'échelle spatiale considérée, ce qui laisse croire qu'il y a une redistribution limitée des saumons YOY d'après leurs préférences d'habitat. La répartition des sites de fraie est donc la meilleure variable prédictive des densités locales et subséquemment de la croissance des YOY. Ainsi, durant le stade YOY pendant lequel la dispersion est limitée, la répartition contagieuse de la fraie, combinée à une densité-dépendance locale, peut être le principal facteur responsable de la variation spatiale de la croissance.

Summary 1. Variations in the strength of ecological interactions between seasons have received little attention, despite an increased focus on climate alterations on ecosystems. Particularly, the winter situation is often neglected when studying competitive interactions. In northern temperate freshwaters, winter implies low temperatures and reduced food availability, but also strong reduction in ambient light because of ice and snow cover. Here, we study how brown trout [Salmo trutta (L.)] respond to variations in ice-cover duration and competition with Arctic charr [Salvelinus alpinus (L.)], by linking laboratory-derived physiological performance and field data on variation in abundance among and within natural brown trout populations. 2. Both Arctic charr and brown trout reduced resting metabolic rate under simulated ice-cover (darkness) in the laboratory, compared to no ice (6-h daylight). However, in contrast to brown trout, Arctic charr was able to obtain positive growth rate in darkness and had higher food intake in tank experiments than brown trout. Arctic charr also performed better (lower energy loss) under simulated ice-cover in a semi-natural environment with natural food supply. 3. When comparing brown trout biomass across 190 Norwegian lakes along a climate gradient, longer ice-covered duration decreased the biomass only in lakes where brown trout lived together with Arctic charr. We were not able to detect any effect of ice-cover on brown trout biomass in lakes where brown trout was the only fish species. 4. Similarly, a 25-year time series from a lake with both brown trout and Arctic charr showed that brown trout population growth rate depended on the interaction between ice breakup date and Arctic charr abundance. High charr abundance was correlated with low trout population growth rate only in combination with long winters. 5. In conclusion, the two species differed in performance under ice, and the observed outcome of competition in natural populations was strongly dependent on duration of the ice-covered period. Our study shows that changes in ice phenology may alter species interactions in Northern aquatic systems. Increased knowledge of how adaptations to winter conditions differ among coexisting species is therefore vital for our understanding of ecological impacts of climate change.

We tested the importance of thermal adaptations and energy efficiency in relation to the geographical distribution of two competing freshwater salmonid fish species. Presence–absence data for Arctic char and brown trout were obtained from 1502 Norwegian lakes embracing both temperature and productivity gradients. The distributions were contrasted with laboratory-derived temperature scaling models for food consumption, growth and energy efficiency. Thermal performances of the two species were almost identical. However, Arctic char exhibited double the growth efficiency (per unit of food) and appear to have out-competed brown trout from cold, low-productivity lakes, perhaps by scramble competition. Brown trout, for which previous reports have shown to be aggressive and dominant, have likely excluded the more energy-efficient Arctic char from relatively warm, productive lakes, perhaps by contest competition. Competitive interaction changing in outcome with lake productivity, rather than thermal performance, is likely a major determinant of the range distribution of the two species. Our study highlights the need for more focus on choice of relevant ecophysiological traits in ecological climate impact studies and species distribution modelling.

A common environment experiment was conducted to assess the magnitude of the difference in growth, con- sumption, activity rate, and spatial and temporal patterns of habitat use between morphologically different populations of Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) originating from two Norwegian lakes. These two lakes contrasted sharply in terms of sur- face area, depth, elevation, length of the winter period, and fish community structure (presence-absence of brown trout, Salmo trutta). The experimental framework encompassed four littoral enclosures (average volume, 146 m 3 ) stocked with char from either of the two populations with duplicated treatments. Char morphology was quantified with numerical image analysis, food consumption was estimated using caesium analysis ( 133 Cs), and activity cost and patterns were determined using video cameras. Char populations were morphologically distinct and reacted differently in growth (1.9-fold difference between populations), food consumption (3-fold difference), and spatial activity patterns (20-fold difference) to the condi- tions prevailing in the enclosures. The results highlight that functional differences between morphologically distinct char may drive important differences in their bioenergetic and behavioural responses when exposed to similar environmental conditions. Such functional differences should be incorporated when developing habitat or trophic cascade models. This review provides a summary of knowledge on two-way fish migration of salmonids and eels past hydroelectric plants in Europe. On the basis of a summary of international literature, general designs and recommendations for best practices for fish-pass facilities are provided. The review is part of the Norwegian SafePass project, which focuses on Atlantic salmon, brown trout, grayling and European eel. According to recent international recommendations, many existing European fishways for upstream migration do not have an optimal design. This is especially evident for denil and pool-and-weir fishways in inland areas with species such as grayling and brown trout. Based on the review, we generally recommend (1) using ramps, nature-like channels and vertical-slot fishways for these species and (2) reducing water drop between the pools in pool-and-weir fishways and reducing energy dissipation compared with the design of traditional Atlantic salmon ladders. There are few well-functioning passages for downstream migration of fish in Europe and significant progress has been made in the past decade to improve technology and knowledge. Several international studies have shown that physical structures, such as fine-mesh trash racks with alternative escape routes and bypass arrangements, provide >90% passage efficiency for downstream migration, especially for brown trout and salmon, and have, in recent years, shown good results also for silver eels. Safe two-way migration for salmonids and eel past hydropower structures in Europe: a review and recommendations for best-practice solutions

The pre-winter lipid stores of young-of-the-year (YOY, age 0 year) Atlantic salmon Salmo salar were analysed along a north-south gradient from c. 71 to 58 degrees N, with winter conditions ranging from >200 days of ice cover to no ice. The rivers sampled in Northern Norway represent some of the most northerly S. salar rivers. There was an increase in lipid content with increasing latitude, and mean lipid content (size adjusted to common mass) for YOY in northern rivers were almost three times higher: 0.035 g compared to 0.013 g in southern rivers. The relationship was not sensitive to variation in sampling time or variation in YOY body size. The lipid stores, however, varied markedly between rivers and also between neighbouring rivers, indicating different strategies or opportunities for pre-winter lipid storage both at latitudinal and local scales.

Activity rate of Arctic char ( Salvelinus alpinus ) held in 90 m2 littoral enclosures were estimated using bioenergetic (with consumption estimated using stable caesium, 133Cs) and behavioural approaches (with fish movements quantified using video cameras). We found no statistically significant difference between values of activity rate obtained using the two approaches for three of the six experiments we performed. However, there was no relationship between estimates of activity rate obtained using the two approaches. Discrepancies may arise from the difficulty to meet assumptions regarding the temporal stability of the concentration of 133Cs in fish diet and of the assimilation coefficient of this tracer. When fish remain in an area where their behaviour can be well described (e.g., enclosure, habitat patches of littoral zones, coral reefs), the behavioural approach appears more robust to estimate activity rate because it depends most on a variable that is easiest to estimate (the number of movements performed). When these conditions are not met (low fish densities or major fish migrations), a reliable assessment of the concentration and assimilation of 133Cs in stomach contents appears critical to implement the bioenergetic approach based on this tracer.

Summary 1. A new laboratory-based growth model for brown trout (Salmo trutta) was used to explore latitudinal variation in growth among natural populations. The model included the effects of differences in ambient temperatures and fish size among populations. Annual growth rates of anadromous brown trout parr from 22 Norwegian populations at 61–70 °N were compared with predictions from the growth model. Published field data from one Spanish, 15 British and four Danish populations at 44–58 °N were included in the analysis to increase the latitudinal range. 2. Among the Norwegian populations, the ratio between observed and predicted growth rates was not significantly different from 1·00 in eight rivers, but was significantly higher in eight, and was significantly lower in six. Observed growth was highest, relative to predicted growth, in the coldest rivers. In Spanish, British and Danish rivers, observed growth did not exceed predicted growth. 3. The ratio between observed and predicted annual growth rate decreased significantly with increasing annual mean temperature. Observed annual growth was higher than predicted growth only in rivers with an annual mean temperature lower than 5·1 °C, and this indicates that some kind of thermal adaptation may occur in trout populations in the coldest rivers. 4. Regression analyses showed that besides the direct effects of temperature and body size predicted by the growth model, annual growth rates were significantly related to annual mean temperature, densities of juvenile salmonids, duration of twilight (average for May–August) and latitude. Adding these variables to the original model increased the explanatory power from 73·9 to 80·6%.

The River Alta, northern Norway (70°N), was regulated for hydropower in 1987. Densities of juveniles and catches of adult Atlantic salmon have been studied since 1980–1981 to examine the effects of regulation. The need to control environmental variables during electrofishing was emphasized, as flow variables explained up to 42% of the variation in estimated juvenile densities. The number of spawning redds was counted along the river from 1996 to 2005. The annual number of spawning redds was correlated with the catch of multi-sea-winter salmon (predominantly females). In the upper 7 km section, just downstream of the power station outlet, juvenile densities were reduced by 80% from pre-regulation levels to minimum levels in 1992–1996. This was followed by partial recovery during 1997–2005, although not entirely back to pre-regulation levels. In contrast, the general trend in the middle part of the river was a linear increase in juvenile densities during 1981–2005. Decreased juvenile densities in the upper section was subsequently followed by reduced catches of adult salmon in this part of the river. The relative catches of smolt year classes migrating to sea in the upper section was reduced by up to 75% from 1991 onwards. Spawning and recruitment in the upper section have increased in recent years, probably back to the introduction of catch-and-release angling and an increase in salmon runs. However, present day smolt production in the upper section is still reduced compared to the middle part of the river, 18 years after regulation. The decreased densities of juvenile salmon in the upper section were probably caused by several factors, of which stranding mortality due to sudden drops in the water level and increased winter mortality due to changed environmental conditions, especially reduced ice-cover, may be the most important. In conclusion, the regulation caused a considerable reduction of the salmon production in the upper 16% of salmon reaches, but did not affect the salmon population negatively further downstream. This study illustrates that apparently small environmental disturbances can cause large changes in Atlantic salmon abundance in high latitude populations.

Summary 1Contrasting results of relations between standard metabolic rate, behaviour and performance suggest that the evolutionary trade-offs in energy allocation between metabolisms and other parts of the energy budget depend on environmental conditions. Here, we show how habitat complexity changes the relationship between standard metabolic rate, behaviour and performance (winter energy loss-rates) in juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.). 2Juvenile Salmon, individually screened for standard metabolic rate, were stocked in replicated semi-natural stream channels with and without sheltering possibilities under ledge cover. We recorded the use of ledged areas, energy-loss rates and feeding activity during a 61-day period. 3In the channels with ledge cover, individuals with relatively higher standard metabolic rates used areas outside of the cover more frequently and had higher feeding frequency than individuals with lower standard metabolic rates. No relationship was apparent between areas used, feeding and standard metabolic rate for the individuals within the no-cover treatments. In channels without cover, there was a negative relationship between standard metabolic rate and performance (energy balance), whereas standard metabolic rate did not affect performance in channels with ledge cover. 4The effect of standard metabolic rate on performance depended on habitat complexity expressed through differences in behaviour. In channels with ledge cover, individuals with higher standard metabolic rates were apparently able to compensate for higher metabolic costs by utilizing a riskier habitat outside the cover and attaining a higher feeding success. 5The present study demonstrates that the relationship between standard metabolic rate and performance may be dependent on habitat complexity and vary on small spatial scales, contributing to the persistence of large variation in standard metabolic rate within populations.

Summary 1. Anthropogenic disturbances of the physical habitat and corresponding effects on fish performance are key issues in stream conservation and restoration. Reduced habitat complexity because of increased sediment loadings and canalization is of particular importance, but it is not clear to what extent fish populations are influenced directly by changes in the physical environment, or indirectly through changes in the biotic environment affecting the food availability. 2. Here, we test for the direct effect of habitat complexity on the performance (growth) of juvenile Atlantic salmon by manipulating shelter availability (interstitial spaces in the substrate) across 20 semi-natural stream channels without altering the substrate composition, and stocking each channel with a common density of fish. A simple method for measuring salmonid shelters using flexible PVC tubes was developed and tested. Daytime sheltering behaviour and growth rates were compared across the channels differing in shelter availability. 3. Measured shelter availability was strongly negatively correlated with observed number of fish not finding shelters and mass loss rates of the fish (growth performance) increased with decreasing number of measured shelters. Number and mean depth of interstitial spaces explained up to 68% and 24% of the among-channel variation in sheltering behaviour and growth performance, respectively. Furthermore, negative effects of shelter reduction increased with fish body size. Thus, changes in habitat structure may even influence the size selection gradients. 4. Shelter availability is an easily measured variable, possibly affecting the population demographics and long-term evolutionary processes, and is therefore a key habitat factor to be considered in stream restoration and habitat classification.

– The seasonal variation in lipid class composition (triacylglycerols, free fatty acids, cholesterols and polar lipids) was described for juvenile Atlantic salmon sampled at 12 occasions over an 18-month period in the Norwegian River Alta (70°N). Lipid class composition was determined for pooled samples of groups of fish sorted by cohort and condition factor. Mass-specific lipid content ranged from 2.3% and 8.1% of fresh mass, and mass-specific triacylglycerol content between 0.16% and 5.6% of fresh mass. Total lipid content decreased by 34–57% during the winter period, before increasing by 155–176% between May and July. A large proportion of the variation in total lipid content was due to variation in triacylglycerol content (r2 = 0.95), except for variations at low total lipids levels when triacylglycerols were absent. The temporal variation in polar lipid content was, although to a lesser degree, related to total lipid content (r2 = 0.62), indicating that the fish also utilised polar lipids as an energy source during periods of starvation. Analyses of 39 individual parr collected in May showed a large individual variation in lipid class composition in the most critical period of the year. It is concluded that information on variation in lipid class composition may give more precise and detailed information of energy status during critical periods, although total lipid content will in most cases give a fair description of the energy status of the fish.

An accidental release of non-toxic waste from decommissioned wood pulp industry in the River Numedalslagen, Southern Norway, occurred in the upper part of the accessible stretches for anadromous fish during a study of migration behaviour of radio tagged Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar, n = 32, body length 51-99 cm). The fish had completed the migration phase and initiated the resident phase characterised by little movement until spawning. When the wooden fibres and pulp were released, 16 of 32 (50%) salmon showed an immediate avoidance response. Six (19%) salmon moved upstream and 10 (31%) salmon moved downstream. Of the salmon moving downstream, eight (25%) moved all the way to sea (average 14.8 km). Four re-entered the River Numedalslagen, two entered a neighbouring river and two were not recorded later. Fish moving downstream but without moving to the sea, moved on average 5.3 km during the episode, whereas those moving upstream moved on average 6.7 km. All fish recorded after the episode (n = 30) survived until the spawning season. The study demonstrates that fish in nature may show an evident avoidance response, even to non-toxic contaminants. For Atlantic salmon, the size of the spawning population may be reduced by fish leaving the river (13% left the river and never came back). Moreover, the dispersal of salmon to other rivers may increase, and the distribution of the spawning population within the contaminated river may shift.

Summary 1. Experimental growth data for Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus L.), all fed on excess rations, from 11 European watercourses between 54 and 70°N were analysed and fitted to a new general growth model for fish. The model was validated by comparing its predictions with the growth rate of charr in the wild. 2. Growth performance varied among populations, mainly because of variation in the maximum growth potential, whereas the thermal response curves were similar. The estimated lower and upper temperatures for growth varied between −1.7 to 5.3 and 20.8–23.2 °C, respectively, while maximum growth occurred between 14.4 and 17.2 °C. 3. There was no geographical or climatic trend in growth performance among populations and therefore no indication of thermal adaptation. The growth potential of charr from different populations correlated positively with fish body length at maturity and maximum weight in the wild. Charr from populations including large piscivorous fish had higher growth rates under standardised conditions than those from populations feeding on zoobenthos or zooplankton. Therefore, the adaptive variation in growth potential was related to life-history characteristics and diet, rather than to thermal conditions.

By comparing the population frequency distributions for specific somatic energy between samplings using quantile–quantile (QQ) plots, we tested for energy-related mortality of juvenile (2- and 3-year-old) Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) sampled at monthly intervals throughout three consecutive winters in a Norwegian river located at 70°N. Between several of the sampling periods, changes in the distributions of specific energy were observed corresponding to removal of low-energy individuals. By using energetic modelling we demonstrated that metabolic processes or feeding could not be responsible for the shifts in the shape of the energy distributions and that negative-energy-dependent mortality was the most likely explanation for the observations. No changes in mean size of the fish or in the shape of the size distributions were observed between successive sampling periods, indicating that mortality was linked to levels of storage energy rather than to body size per se. Our study indicated a critical body energy level for survival of juvenile salmon at approximately 4400–4800 J·g–1, corresponding to a depletion of storage lipids.
