The authors report on the capture of a specimen of smoothback angelshark Squatina oculata Bonaparte, 1840 from Turkish marine waters. The specimen measured 720 mm in total length and was caught by means of a commercial purse-seiner at a depth of 60 m. The species appeared to be sporadically caught in the area and the eastern Mediterranean Sea, however, the size diversity of recorded specimens shows the species still occurred in the region. Although the smoothback angel shark is listed as a protected species according to Turkish Marine Fisheries Act, a management plan should be integrated with local fisheries to preserve the species from extirpation throughout its distribution range in Turkish seas. We aimed to investigate whether there is a difference between intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (IHCC) and liver metastases of gastrointestinal system (GIS) adenocarcinoma in terms of apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values.

Emergency liver transplantation (LT) for acute liver failure (ALF) is a life-saving treatment. Occurrence of this situation in the same patient twice is very rare. Herein, we describe a patient who underwent two emergency LTs for ALF, both from living donors. When she was 26 years old, she underwent a right lobe living donor LT (LDLT) from her sister for ALF due to use of herbal weight loss medications. The next 3 years were uneventful but another ALF developed during a terminal stage pregnancy (37th week). Despite medical treatment, her liver functions worsened, and the baby was delivered by caesarean section. The second time, her brother was the donor and she recovered after the emergency right lobe re-LDLT. Both patient and baby were well at the 2-month follow-up. As far as we know, there is no reported similar case, and we concluded that LDLT is a paramount treatment option for both primary and secondary ALFs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, our aim is to discuss the imaging findings of the abdominal complications seen in Cystic Fibrosis (CF), with ultrasonography (US) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Our first case, a 22 year-old female showed changes characterized by severe biliary involvement such as cholelithiasis and cholangitis. Our second case was a 36 year-old male with severe hepatic manifestations. In this case signs of severe cirrhosis, portal hypertension and marked splenomegaly were seen. Micro-gallbladder, cholecystolithiasis and diffuse fatty infiltration of the pancreas were seen in both cases. In conclusion: US and MRI are effective and noninvasive imaging techniques to evaluate the abdominal complications of cystic fibrosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study was designed to compare the effects of ketamine and alfentanil administered prior to induction of anaesthesia with propofol, on the haemodynamic changes and ProSeal laryngeal mask airway® (PLMA) insertion conditions in children. Eighty children, aged between 3–132 months, were randomly allocated to receive either alfentanil 20 μg.kg−1 (alfentanil group) or ketamine 0.5 mg.kg−1 (ketamine group) before induction of anaesthesia. Ninety seconds following the administration of propofol 4 mg.kg−1, a PLMA was inserted. In the ketamine group, heart rate and mean arterial pressure were higher during the study period compared with the alfentanil group (p < 0.05). The time for the return of spontaneous ventilation was prolonged in the alfentanil group (p = 0.004). In conclusion, we found that the administration of ketamine 0.5 mg.kg−1 with propofol 4 mg.kg−1 preserved haemodynamic stability, and reduced the time to the return of spontaneous ventilation, compared with alfentanil 20 μg.kg−1 during PLMA placement. Purpose: Endometrial cancer (EC) is among the prevalent malignancies in gynecology, showing an increasing occurrence and mortality rate. The updated 2023 FIGO staging integrates both histopathological and molecular analyses, which significantly impact the prognosis and treatment approaches. This research aims to examine the effectiveness of MRI in identifying essential histopathological tumor features, including histological subtype, grade, and lymphovascular space invasion., Methods: A total of 106 patients diagnosed with EC from February 2018 to December 2023 underwent preoperative pelvic MRI. Surgical procedures followed ESMO guidelines, with histopathological assessments using FIGO 2009 criteria. Two radiologists independently evaluated MRI images, measuring maximum tumor size, minimum tumor ADC value (using a free-hand ROI technique), and ADC tumor/myometrium ratio. MRI findings were compared with histopathological data., Results: Peritoneal implant presence and tumor size exhibited significant differences between endometrioid adenocarcinoma (EAC) and non-endometrioid endometrial carcinoma (NEEC), with p values of < 0.001 and 0.003, respectively. Significant differences in age, tumor size, ADC tumor, and ADC tumor/myometrium between low-grade and high-grade tumors were observed, with p values of < 0.001, 0.004, 0.006, and 0.011, respectively. Increased tumor size, reduced ADC tumor, ADC tumor/myometrium, and pelvic peritoneal implant presence were significantly associated with LVSI, with p values of < 0.001, 0.001, 0.002, and 0.001, respectively. The AUC values for tumor size, ADC tumor, and ADC tumor/myometrium were 0.842, 0.781 and 0.747, respectively, in distinguishing between low and high-grade endometrial tumors. Similarly, obtained AUC values for predicting LVSI were 0.836, 0.719, and 0.696, respectively., Conclusion: Our study emphasizes MRI's role in predicting tumor characteristics such as histological subtype, grade, and LVSI based on updated FIGO criteria. By highlighting the potential of MRI, this research contributes to our comprehension of improving diagnostic and clinical management for EC. Immature teratomas (IT) are rare germ cell tumors with malignant behavior, distinct from the benign mature teratomas. Clinical differentiation poses challenges, demanding a comprehensive, multidisciplinary diagnostic approach. This case series delves into the detailed radiological imaging findings of ITs. Pelvic MRI was conducted on five cases with adnexal masses, all of which were histopathologically confirmed as ITs. Radiologically, larger tumor size and scattered fatty components were key diagnostic indicators. Primary retroperitoneal neoplasms (PRNs) are a complex and diverse group of tumors arising in the retroperitoneal space, excluding those from retroperitoneal organs. These masses present significant diagnostic challenges due to their heterogeneous nature. PRNs primarily include sarcomas, neurogenic tumors, extragonadal germ cell tumors, and lymphomas, with the majority being malignant. This necessitates thorough evaluation by radiologists to assess resectability and the need for biopsy. Liposarcomas, the most common primary retroperitoneal sarcomas, and leiomyosarcomas, known for potential vessel involvement, exhibit distinct imaging patterns aiding differentiation. Neurogenic tumors, originating from nerve sheath, ganglionic, or paraganglionic cells, often appear in younger patients and have characteristic imaging features. Primary retroperitoneal extragonadal germ cell tumors are rare and are believed to originate from primordial germ cells that do not successfully migrate during embryonic development. Lymphomas are generally homogeneous on cross-sectional imaging; however, non-Hodgkin lymphomas can sometimes appear heterogeneous, complicating differentiation from other non-lipomatous retroperitoneal masses. Additionally, conditions like retroperitoneal fibrosis and Erdheim-Chester disease can mimic PRNs, complicating diagnosis and management. This review aims to provide radiologists with essential diagnostic points for identifying PRNs, emphasizing the importance of precise imaging interpretation. Context: The paucity of data on microvascular complications in patients with posttransplant diabetes (PTDM) is an obstacle to developing follow-up algorithms., Objective: To evaluate diabetic microvascular complications in patients with long-standing PTDM., Methods: In patients with ≥5-year history of PTDM and age-matched renal transplant recipients without PTDM (NDM), diabetic peripheral neuropathy was evaluated using the Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument, the CASE IV device, and in vivo corneal confocal microscopy (CCM). Cardiac autonomic neuropathy tests were performed using heart rate variability. Nephropathy screening was assessed using spot urine albumin/creatinine ratio and eGFR calculation. Diabetic retinopathy was evaluated by fundus examination and photography, and optical coherence tomography., Results: This study included 41 patients with PTDM and 45 NDM patients. The median follow-up was 107.5 months in the PTDM group. Peripheral neuropathy was significantly higher in the PTDM group than in the NDM group (P = .02). In the PTDM patients with peripheral neuropathy, corneal nerve fiber density examined by CCM was significantly lower than in PTDM patients without neuropathy (P = .001). Parasympathetic involvement was observed in 58.5% of the PTDM group and 22% of the NDM group (P = .001). Sympathetic involvement was present in 65.9% of the PTDM group and 29.3% of the NDM group (P = .001). Retinopathy was observed in 19.5% of patients in the PTDM group and in none of the NDM patients (P < .001). Renal functions were similar between the study groups., Conclusion: Cardiac autonomic neuropathy and diabetic retinopathy can affect patients with PTDM at a high rate. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between left-sided varicocele and epididymitis or epididymo-orchitis., Materials and Methods: The study included 72 patients with left side epididymitis (EP) or epididymo-orchitis (EPO) (Group 1) and a control group of 72 patients without EP or EPO (Group 2). Those with right EP-EPO were excluded due to possible other underlying retroperitoneal pathologies causing varicocele. Groups were evaluated for presence of left side varicocele, varicocele grade and pampiniform plexus vein diameter., Results: The average age was 38 ± 8.4 years (range, 18-50 years) in Group 1, and 36 ± 9.1 years (range, 16-47 years) in Group 2. Varicocele was significantly more common in patients with EP or EPO (p < 0.001). The rate of varicocele was 66.7% (48/72) in Group 1, and 22.3% (16/72) in Group 2. The median grade of varicocele was 2 in Group 1, and 0 in Group 2. Pampiniform plexus vein diameters were found to be significantly larger in patients with EP or EPO compare to patients without EP and EPO. The median vein diameter was 3.3 mm with the 25th and 75th percentiles at 2.7 and 3.8 mm, and was 1.9 mm with the 25th and 75th percentiles at 1.7 and 2.3 mm, respectively (p < 0.001)., Conclusions: Left-sided varicocele was significantly more common in patients with EP or EPO and it is an important cause for the development of EP/EPO because of chronic venous stasis., (© 2024 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

Background: Some pathologies associated with abnormal patellar height have been reported in the literature. However, its relationship with some pathologies, such as anterior cruciate ligament mucoid degeneration (ACL-MD) and focal cartilage defect, has not been investigated., Purpose: To investigate the relationship between patellar height with patellar-quadriceps tendinopathy, quadriceps fat pad edema, ACL-MD, and focal cartilage defect., Material and Methods: Magnetic resonance imaging of the knees of 261 patients were classified into three groups as normal, patella alta, and patella baja, and evaluated in terms of patellar-quadriceps tendinopathy, quadriceps fat pad edema, ACL-MD, and focal cartilage defect., Results: There were 261 patients (140 men, 121 women; age range = 18-60 years; mean age = 30 ± 4.7 years). Of the 261 patients, 181 (69.3%) were normal, 56 (21.4%) were patella alta, and 24 were patella baja (9.1%). Patellar-quadriceps tendinopathy, quadriceps fat pad edema, and ACL-MD rates were significantly higher compared to the normal group ( P <0.05). While a moderate positive correlation was found between patellar height shift and patellar-quadriceps tendinopathy and ACL-MD, there was a small correlation between patellar height shift and quadriceps fat pad edema. The rate of focal cartilage defect was significantly higher in the middle part of the lateral femoral condyle and lateral knee joint only in patella alta., Conclusion: The risk of patellar-quadriceps tendinopathy, quadriceps fat pad edema, ACL-MD, and lateral focal cartilage defect is higher in patients with alta-baja. Purpose: In children, circumcision is a procedure associated with perioperative pain and parental satisfaction is an important parameter in the evaluation of anesthesia procedures. Inadequate dorsal penile nerve block (DPNB) for the ventral shaft of the penis might impact parental satisfaction negatively. To evaluate this hypothesis, we compared the effects of penile ring block (RB) and dorsal penile nerve block (DPNB) on parental satisfaction. Postoperative pain, need for additional analgesia, intraoperative hemodynamic data, recovery status, side effects, and postoperative complications were evaluated as secondary outcomes between the blocks., Methods: Parental satisfaction and anesthetic effectiveness of RB and DPNB for circumcision in children were compared. 86 patients were randomized 1:1 to Group RB and Group DPNB, which were administered the same dose of anesthesia. Parental satisfaction was evaluated with the Pediatric Anesthesia Parental Satisfaction Questionnaire (PAPS). Postoperative pain evaluations were made with the Face, Legs, Activity, Crying, Consolability Pain Scale (FLACC)., Results: In terms of parent satisfaction, no differences were detected between the groups in the pre-anesthesia, pre-anesthesia and post-anesthesia, post-anesthesia, hospital team, and anesthesia team parameters (p > 0.05). The scores of Group DPNB patients were higher only in the "Q11" subparameter in the "anesthesia team" parameter, and this difference was significant (0.024)., Conclusion: RB and DPNB were compared in circumcision, which is the most common surgical procedure for children.
