Abstract

This book explores tools and techniques for creating the arts with groups. It provides insights into why workshops are such an effective and relevant form of creative practice. Throughout, two experienced practitioners share successful principles and qualities. They also include examples of workshops that explore ways of facilitating creative exploration. The authors believe that underpinning any good workshop practice is an understanding of what constitutes a workshop. This is a process in which the relationship between artist/researcher and participant/audience, maker, and witness is fluid. It extends each individual's abilities and connects doing to learning to inquiring in a single process. The book itself is a dialogue on, and an investigation into, this practice. It fully explores the specificities of workshop practice in relation to how it engages others in arts-based research. Readers learn how workshops involve inquiry into six areas: inquiry into subjects, artistic processes, skills, self, the world, and relationships with others. In the end, this informed investigation helps practitioners to better reflect on their own approaches to arts-based inquiry and research. This, in turn, leads to a better understanding of how readers can use workshops for the maximum benefit of all participants, both individuals and groups.

Abstract

Background: Immune mechanisms have been implicated in the pathogenesis of depression. Translocator protein (TSPO)–targeted positron emission tomography (PET) has been used to assess neuroinflammation in major depressive disorder. We aimed to 1) test the hypothesis of significant case-control differences in TSPO binding in the anterior cingulate cortex, prefrontal cortex, and insula regions; and 2) explore the relationship between cerebral TSPO binding and peripheral blood C-reactive protein (CRP) concentration. Methods: A total of 51 depressed subjects with Hamilton Depression Rating Scale score >13 (median 17; interquartile range, 16–22) and 25 healthy control subjects underwent dynamic brain 11C-PK11195 PET and peripheral blood immune marker characterization. Depressed subjects were divided into high CRP (>3 mg/L; n = 20) and low CRP (2 p = .09; F 1,71 = 6.97, p = .01), which was not influenced by body mass index. The case-control difference was greatest in the anterior cingulate cortex (d = 0.49; t 74 = 2.00, p = .03) and not significant in the prefrontal cortex or insula (d = 0.27 and d = 0.36, respectively). Following CRP stratification, significantly higher TSPO binding was observed in low-CRP depression compared with controls (d = 0.53; t 54 = 1.96, p = .03). These effect sizes are comparable to prior major depressive disorder case-control TSPO PET data. No significant correlations were observed between TSPO and CRP measures. Conclusions: Consistent with previous findings, there is a modest increase in TSPO binding in depressed patients compared with healthy control subjects. The lack of a significant correlation between brain TSPO binding and blood CRP concentration or body mass index poses questions about the interactions between central and peripheral immune responses in the pathogenesis of depression.

'The fight game in the raw great contests and some really hard men. What a life!'Roy Shaw Prize-fighting was one of the greatest sporting attractions in the 18th and 19th centuries. Prize-fights attracted thousands of spectators from all walks of life and, nothwithstanding its illegality, was patronised by royalty and the aristocracy. The area outside London around Barnet, Whetstone, Finchley and up into Hertfordshire was one on the most popular for staging fights. Featured in Up to Scratch are many of the great champions - Tom Johnson, Daniel Mendoza, Jem Belcher, Tom Sayers and Jem Mace - as well as many forgotten but no less colourful fistic heroes. Up To Scratch powerfully evokes an age when pugilism was a barbaric, corrupt and yet primarily noble activity.

Abstract

Despite use of computed tomography, some lung cancer patients are found to have unresectable disease at surgery, or they present early with metastases. We studied whether whole-body positron emission tomography (PET) with 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18FDG) would improve the preoperative detection of metastases. We retrospectively analysed 34 patients with "operable" non-small-cell lung cancer who underwent 18FDG PET after routine assessment. Management changes produced by the PET scan and confirmatory tests were reviewed. PET identified unsuspected malignant lesions in 10 (29%) patients. Management changes occurred in 14 (41%), including 6 (18%) patients who were changed to non-surgical therapy. These data suggest that whole-body 18FDG PET improves preoperative assessment of lung cancer patients.

15. Investigating Compaction by Intergranular Pressure Solution Using the Discrete Element Method.

Abstract

Intergranular pressure solution creep is an important deformation mechanism in the Earth's crust. The phenomenon has been frequently studied and several analytical models have been proposed that describe its constitutive behavior. These models require assumptions regarding the geometry of the aggregate and the grain size distribution in order to solve for the contact stresses and often neglect shear tractions. Furthermore, analytical models tend to overestimate experimental compaction rates at low porosities, an observation for which the underlying mechanisms remain to be elucidated. Here we present a conceptually simple, 3-D discrete element method (DEM) approach for simulating intergranular pressure solution creep that explicitly models individual grains, relaxing many of the assumptions that are required by analytical models. The DEM model is validated against experiments by direct comparison of macroscopic sample compaction rates. Furthermore, the sensitivity of the overall DEM compaction rate to the grain size and applied stress is tested. The effects of the interparticle friction and of a distributed grain size on macroscopic strain rates are subsequently investigated. Overall, we find that the DEM model is capable of reproducing realistic compaction behavior, and that the strain rates produced by the model are in good agreement with uniaxial compaction experiments. Characteristic features, such as the dependence of the strain rate on grain size and applied stress, as predicted by analytical models, are also observed in the simulations. DEM results show that interparticle friction and a distributed grain size affect the compaction rates by less than half an order of magnitude.
