An ultra-resolution, 3D seismic reflection data cube was collected during an oceanographic cruise organized in the frame of a joint project involving Italian research institutions, the University of Palermo, Catania and Napoli, CNR of Napoli and INGV Roma, and two companies, the Geo Marine Survey System (The Netherlands) and GeoSurvey (Portugal). The data acquisition approach charted during this cooperation was based on innovative technologies for the offshore imaging of stratigraphy and structures at continental margins with horizontal and vertical resolution at decimetric scale. In this work, we present the methodology used for the 3D HR-seismic reflection data acquisition and the preliminary interpretation of the 3D seismic cube. The 3D seismic data were acquired onboard the N/O Minerva Uno by using an innovative data acquisition equipment composed by two sparker sources fired in flip-flop mode, and eight HR 48-channel, slant streamers, with group spacing variable from 1 to 2 meters, at 10 kHz sampling rate. An innovative navigation system was used to perform all necessary computations to determining real-time positions of sources and receivers. The investigated area is located in the central-northern part of the Pozzuoli (Naples) Bay that represents the offshore prolongation of the Campi Flegrei caldera. Here, an antiformal structure, corresponding to the resurgent dome associated with Neapolitan Yellow Tuff (NYT) caldera, characterizes the structure and morphology of the inner shelf (e.g. Sacchi et al., 2014). Previous research works based on 2 or 2.5D high-resolution reflection seismics (e.g. Steinmann et al., 2018), have documented the presence of collapse faults on the summit (apical graben) of the resurgent dome. However the 3D pattern of this structure and the style of ground deformation are still poorly defined. The results of this study provide the base for the quantitative analysis of active faults and stress field that are important for understanding the volcano-tectonic process responsible for the formation of the resurgence dome inside the caldera and its related hazard.

In the course of three years, the CNR-ISMAR of Naples carried out the surveys ("Lampedusa 2015", "Linosa 2016" and "BioGeoLin 2017") with the aim of studying the seabed of the insular shelf of Lampedusa, Linosa and Lampione, the three islands belonging to the Pelagie Archipelago. A common feature of all three surveys was the use of the multibeam Teledyne Reson SeaBat 7125 400 kHz (Innangi et al., 2018; Innangi et al., 2019), providing sub-centimetric resolution in the bathymetric data at that depth range between 5 to 180 m. Furthermore, the vessels employed were equipped with the same auxiliary instruments, i.e. an Oministar DGPS (for position data), an IxSea Octans 3000 (for attitude data), and a Valeport mini-SVS sound velocity probe installed near the transducer (for beam steering). For all surveys, the snippet data was logged (as backscatter information) with the same Absorption and Spread acquisition parameters. Also the data processing was the same, e.g. the snippet data was processed using FMGeocoder Toolbox (FMGT) in Fledermaus 7.6 version (QPS, 2016) to produce mosaic images with the same amplitude range, from -60 dB (lighter tones, corresponding to low backscatter) to -25 dB (dark grey tones, corresponding to high backscatter). Furthermore, ground-truth information, in the form of video-investigation (for all islands) and grab samples (only for Linosa and Lampione), were collected during the surveys. These characteristics made it possible to analyse all islands with RSOBIA (Remote Sensing Object Based Image Analysis) with the integrated information derived from backscatter data and bathy-morphological features, validated by ground-truth data (Innangi et al., 2018; Innangi et al., 2019) to produce three seabed maps, including seagrass distribution and benthoscape classification (according to Lacharité et al., 2017), and comparable to each other. Finally, it must be emphasized that the maps provided the first indication of the occurrence of rhodolith and maërl habitats at Lampione and Linosa, which are among the most important ecosystems in the Mediterranean Sea, while for Lampedusa further ground-truth data are necessary to better characterize the acoustic facies pattern of the island (Innangi et al., 2018; Innangi et al., 2019)

Linosa Island represents the emergent tip of a mostly submarine volcanic edifice, with at least 96% of its areal extent lying below sea level. Its morphology is the result of volcanic subaerial activity dated from ~1.06 Ma to 0.5 Ma (Rossi et al., 1996). Until now, the scant knowledge on its submarine extension led to consider this volcanic edifice as extinct. Marine geological surveys carried out by ISMAR CNR of Naples in 2016 and 2017 allowed to reconstruct the submarine portions of Linosa down to a depth of 1000 m, indicating a much wider submarine extension than expected. The new multibeam data, integrated by seismic profiles and ROV inspections, provided new insights on the evolution and biological colonization of this little-explored volcanic edifice. Overall, it extends for about 20 km in the NW-SE direction, evidencing a tectonic control from the main structural system of the Sicily Channel, as already suggested for the subaerial portions (Rossi et al., 1996). Along the same direction, also a marked tectonic lineament and a field of pockmarks can be observed at the base of the W/SW flanks, respectively. The shallow-water SE and NW portions of the volcanic edifice show wide insular shelves, giving evidence on the original extent of the early eruptive centres at the time of emersion stage, prior to their erosion during late-Quaternary sea-level fluctuations (Romagnoli, 2004). These areas are the seat of a very rich ecosystem with a pristine coralligenous habitat. Where insular shelves are lacking, canyons and gullies develop with a radial pattern from shallow water down to the base of the submarine flanks. A number of volcanic features such as lava fields, lava flows and are recognized on the submarine flanks, which appear punctuated by several eruptive centres. A specific morphometric investigation of the volcanic cones mapped on the Linosa submarine flanks was carried out, pointing out a strong similarity with the Pantelleria volcano, especially for what regards the distribution and morphometric characteristics of eruptive cones occurring in the submarine portions (Calarco et al. 2011). The study of the submarine extension of Linosa suggests that the growth and evolution of the volcanic edifice has likely been more complex than what inferred from its subaerial volcanism, and gives new insights on the development of volcanism in the Sicily Channel and on related potential hazard.

The submerged sill in the Strait of Messina, which is located today at a minimum depth of 81 m below sea level (bsl), represents the only land connection between Sicily and mainland Italy (and thus Europe) during the last lowstand when the sea level locally stood at about 126 m bsl. Today, the sea crossing to Sicily, although it is less than 4 km at the narrowest point, faces hazardous sea conditions, made famous by the myth of Scylla and Charybdis. Through a multidisciplinary research project, we document the timing and mode of emergence of this land connection during the last 40 kyr. The integrated analysis takes into consideration morphobathymetric and lithological data, and relative sea-level change (both isostatic and tectonic), resulting in the hypothesis that a continental land bridge lasted for at least 500 years between 21.5 and 20 cal ka BP. The emergence may have occurred over an even longer time span if one allows for seafloor erosion by marine currents that have lowered the seabed since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Modelling of palaeotidal velocities shows that sea crossings when sea level was lower than present would have faced even stronger and more hazardous sea currents than today, supporting the hypothesis that earliest human entry into Sicily most probably took place on foot during the period when the sill emerged as dry land. This hypothesis is compared with an analysis of Pleistocene vertebrate faunas in Sicily and mainland Italy, including a new radiocarbon date on bone collagen of an Equus hydruntinus specimen from Grotta di San Teodoro (23–21 cal ka BP), the dispersal abilities of the various animal species involved, particularly their swimming abilities, and the Palaeolithic archaeological record, all of which support the hypothesis of a relatively late land-based colonization of Sicily by Homo sapiens.

Il presente lavoro descrive le attività svolte dall'Istituto per l'Ambiente Marino Costiero (IAMC - CNR) nell'ambito di una collaborazione con l'Università Ca' Foscari di Venezia per il monitoraggio di un impianto di mitilicoltura di Mytilus galloprovincialis nel settore antistante la foce del fiume Sile a Jesolo, in provincia di Venezia.

A seguito della stipula della convenzione "Progetto di ricerca finalizzato all'individuazione di sabbie relitte sulla piattaforma siciliana nell'area prospiciente il golfo di Gela" siglato in data 19 aprile 2012 tra il Commissario straordinario per l'attuazione degli interventi per la mitigazione del rischio idrologico nella regione siciliana previsti nell'accordo di programma siglato il 30.03.2010 e l'Istituto per l'Ambiente Marino Costiero del CNR è stato progettato e realizzato un survey geofisico mirato alla valutazione dei potenziali reservoir di sabbie relitte presenti nell'area al fine di garantire la reale comprensione delle potenzialità dei giacimenti sabbiosi da utilizzarsi come fonti di materia prima per il ripascimento dei litorali.

Il presente documento descrive le attività svolte dall' Istituto per l'Ambiente Marino Costiero IAMC-CNR relative alla Convenzione di consulenza tecnico-scientifica stipulata tra ARPA Lazio e l'IAMC-CNR (Prot. N° 0008085 del 21/10/2013). Le attività richieste nella Convenzione, riguardavano rilievi batimetrici e magnetometrici nell'ambito del progetto di caratterizzazione del bacino del lago di Vico. In particolare all'IAMC-CNR è stato richiesto di effettuare i rilievi in un determinato settore del lago, identificabile con diverso colore nella Figura 1. Nel settore a sud, di colore più chiaro, è stato richiesto di effettuare un rilievo magnetometrico più fitto per meglio identificare e definire la presenza di eventuali anomalie magnetiche connesse a depositi di materiali ferromagnesiaci di diversa natura.

MaGIC è un progetto quinquennale (2007-2012) finanziato dal Dipartimento della Protezione Civile per l'acquisizione di dati morfobatimetrici ad alta risoluzione. Lo scopo principale del progetto è quello di definire e rappresentare i principali elementi morfobatimetrici dei fondali marini, in particolar modo quelli derivanti da dinamiche morfo-sedimentarie che implicano mobilità e/o instabilità dei sedimenti e conseguenti situazioni di pericolosità per le infrastrutture e le aree costiere urbanizzate. A tal fine è prevista la realizzazione della Carta degli Elementi di Pericolosità dei Fondali Marini, costituita da 72 Fogli a scala 1:50.000, di cui 13 di competenza IAMC, attraverso la realizzazione di diverse tipologie di carte tematiche al fine di mettere in risalto aspetti diversi della pericolosità geologica e le differenti scale a cui essa può essere investigata e rappresentata. Le carte tematiche che verranno realizzate costituiranno uno strumento conoscitivo di cui il Dipartimento della Protezione Civile potrà disporre per la gestione dei rischi territoriali, ma anche una base per attività di ricerca in aree marine geologicamente complesse e in gran parte ancora poco conosciute. La Campagna Oceanografica Magic_IAMC_0909 è mirata all'acquisizione della base batimetrica dei primi 3 fogli del settore sardo dell'IAMC, situati nella parte nord occidentale delle coste sarde. Di questi settori non esisteva alcuna base preesistente e rappresentano la prima acquisizione con ecoscandaglio multi fascio realizzata in questa area. La strumentazione installata sull'imbarcazione non consente il completamento della batimetria richiesta dal progetto (dai 50 ai 600 metri di profondità), quindi, in questa prima fase, verrà acquisita la totalità dei settori di piattaforma.

La Campagna Oceanografica Magic_IAMC1211 è mirata alla chiusura della base batimetrica del Foglio Castelsardo n°71, del settore sardo affidato all'IAMC dal progetto nazionale. La campagna si è svolta a bordo della Nave Oceanografica Urania che ha in dotazione il Multibeam Simrad EM710 a 100kHz montato a scafo e il Sub bottom profiler Teledyne/Bentos CHIRP III a 13 trasduttori, con cui verranno effettuate acquisizioni di sismica superficiale in contempopranea alle acquisizioni multibeam. Del Foglio 71 era stata eseguita solo l'acquisizione del Canale di Castel Sardo fino alla profondità dei 900 metri, limite strumentale dell'EM710 100Khz.

La Campagna Oceanografica Magic_IAMC0410 è mirata alla chiusura della base batimetrica del Foglio Alghero n°68 e del Foglio Bosa n°67 del settore sardo affidato all'IAMC dal progetto nazionale. Questi due fogli erano già stati precedentemente acquisiti durante la Campagna Oceanografica Magic_IAMC0909 utilizzando il Simrad EM3002 che però non arrivava alla profondità richiesta dal progetto. Durante questa campagna si avrà a disposizione il multibeam Reson Seabat 7111, la cui profondità operativa è di 1000m, quindi si conta di chiudere i 600m di acquisizione come da contratto per entrambi i fogli.

Gli Ecoscandagli Multifascio (EMF) sono attualmente gli strumenti principalmente utilizzati per la mappatura dei fondali. Essi calcolano i valori di profondità basandosi sul tempo necessario affinché un impulso acustico si propaghi dalla sorgente al fondo: ai fini del loro funzionamento è quindi necessario conoscere il profilo di velocità del suono dalla superficie al fondo per poter calcolare i coefficienti di rifrazione di ogni strato della colonna d'acqua. Per questo motivo, durante i survey batimetrici, vengono registrati profili di velocità del suono ogni 6-8 ore; gli intervalli possono essere più brevi qualora le condizioni meteomarine lo richiedano, ovvero in caso di rimescolamento degli strati superficiali, in aree soggette a fenomeni di upwelling o in presenza di acque di ruscellamento. L'utilizzo di profili di velocità non corretti influenza la qualità del dato batimetrico in termini di errato posizionamento di un punto sia sul piano orizzontale che su quello verticale; ciò si traduce nella comparsa di creste o solchi in corrispondenza delle zone di sovrapposizione tra linee di acquisizione adiacenti. La correzione di tali artefatti è una fase complessa nella elaborazione dei dati, e può essere affrontata mediante algoritmi che ricalcolano le profondità utilizzando il valore corretto di velocità oppure applicando in post-processing dei profili di velocità equivalenti.

L'UO02 dell'Istituto per l'Ambiente Marino Costiero, con i fondi e con la collaborazione dell'UO03 dell'AZ1 dell'IAMC sez. di Oristano, ha svolto la prima campagna di rilievi. Questa campagna, preparata nella riunione di UO svoltasi a Oristano a maggio, comprendeva le aree costiere di interesse per il progetto su cui l'UO3 dell'AZ1 effettuerà la parte scientifica.

Until the late 70's bathymetry data of the oceans were commonly acquired by means of single beam echo sounders, along discontinue track lines with an uneven spatial distribution. More recently, the MultiBeam Echo Sounder (MBES) technology was made available to the academic research. These systems provide a full sea floor search and a high resolution imaging of the seafloor. The MBES systems provide depth values along a swath instead of a single point value by means of acoustic pulses arrays. There are several MBES models characterizing by different technical equipments in terms of frequencies, beam number and spacing. MBES systems are used in archaeological and engineering fields, where high resolution data in small areas are required, as well as in deep seafloor mapping aimed at large scale structures detection. MBES may provide also grain size information besides bathymetric data, recording the backscatter values that result from the interaction of acoustic pulses with the seafloor. This tool is particularly important to characterize the distribution of some features on the seafloor such as submarine landslides and other elements that may play an important role in the assessment of the geological hazard along the coasts. Actually some research groups are improving the backscatter analysis to generate a semi-automatic seabed classification method. This contribution will provide an overview of some recent examples studied within the framework of the CNR research projects.

L'obiettivo di questa nota è la presentazione dei dati morfobatimetrici di alta risoluzione acquisiti recentemente nel Golfo di Pozzuoli, la cui interpretazione in parte integra gli studi precedenti sul sottofondo. Le nuove informazioni sulla topografia sottomarina consentono considerazioni sia sulle modificazioni dei fondali indotte direttamente dai fenomeni vulcano-tettonici, sia sui processi secondari di riassetto del profilo d'equilibrio morfologico in ambiente acquatico.

Biotic, petrophysical, paleomagnetic proxies combined with 14C AMS data allowed us to produce, for deep marine record of Sentinelle Valley (Sardinia Channel), a detailed integrated stratigraphic time-framework for the last 80 kyr. Major planktonic foraminiferal changes in quantitative distribution of selected climate sensitive species allowed the identification of 10 eco-biozones and the main climatic global events (Sapropel S1, Younger Dryas, Greenland Isotope Interstadial 1, Greenland Isotope Stadial 2, Heinrich events H1-H6). An accurate age-depth profile has been proposed for the studied record which spans between 2 and 83 kyr cal. BP. The adopted age model was successively confirmed by comparing the colour reflectance data of the studied record with the astronomically tuned deep marine record ODP-Site 964 from the Ionian Sea. Three turbidite event layers were chronologically constrained within the relative low stand and lowering sea level phases associated to the MIS 4 and MIS 3.

Habitat mapping and classification is recognised as a central topic in the definition of the quality of marine environment within the framework of the EU Marine Strategy. Acoustic methods for seafloor mapping have been widely developed over the last decades. In particular, the development of swath bathymetry has enabled the creation of detailed maps of seabed topography and acoustic backscatter data; these data have been used to predict sediment and habitat types. The Institute for Coastal Marine Environment (IAMC) of CNR of Naples carried out a multidisciplinary study focused on the construction of subsurface sedimentological and bionomic maps along the Maratea coast (Basilicata region, south Tyrrhenian sea) within a marine protect area institution project. For this purpose, acoustic swath bathymetric data were collected, together with sediment sampling and direct scuba investigation on benthic communities.

For this purpose acoustic swath bathymetric data were collected, together with sediment sampling and direct scuba investigation on benthic communities.

Extensive high-resolution mapping of the continental margin off the southern Campania region (eastern Tyrrhenian Sea) has revealed significant morphological and geological features which allowed us to outline the gradual modification of the coastal domains since the Late Pleistocene. Swath bathymetry, acoustic images of the seafloor, seismic acquisition, core and bottom samples were used to implement a large database. Shore bodies ranging in age from pre- to post- last-glacial times have been identified in the uppermost 100 ms of the seismic stratigraphic record off the Sele and Bussento river mouths. The oldest bodies formed during the seaward retreat of the shoreline during the Late Pleistocene sea level drop. The peak of the retreat accounts for the growth of a shelf-margin, in the Salerno and Policastro Bays, and a mid-shelf, off Cilento, littoral body, at least 100 km long, during the last maximum lowstand phase. At that time, the River Sele flowed directly on the upper slope and formed a channel drainage system, still preserved between a depth of 180 and 500 m, due to density flows that have transferred sediment from the coastal area directly into the Salerno Valley, an intraslope basin of the Eastern Tyrrhenian Margin. The postglacial sea level rise caused the fast drowning of the shelf and a partial preservation of the transgressive deposits. However a prograding wedge 1.5 km long and about 10 ms thick, which lies above the transgressive surface (90/60 m below the present day sea level), could represent a trace of the Younger Dryas climatic event. The rapid shore progradation during the 12 ky B.P. cold event testifies the sensitivity of the Sele coastal system even to minor climatic oscillations.

Nell'ambito della Convenzione tra la Regione Campania e l'Istituto per l'Ambiente Marino Costiero (I.A.M.C.) inserita nell'accordo quadro per la realizzazione della nuova Cartografia Geologica, è stata effettuata una campagna oceanografica nel periodo 8 giugno - 4 luglio 2006. I dati ottenuti si vanno ad aggiungere al dataset già acquisito per completare la batimetria e la mosaicatura side scan della costa campana fino ai 200 metri di profondità. I rilievi sono stati effettuati in setori prescelti nei golfi di Napoli, Salerno e Policastro.

Nel giugno 2007 si è svolta la Campagna Oceanografica "Sonos2007" a bordo della N/O Thetis. La campagna ha visto la collaborazione di due sezioni dell'IAMC (Istituto per l'Ambiente Marino Costiero - CNR), quella di Oristano e quella di Napoli nell'ambito del progetto Sigla (Sistema Integrato per monitoraggio e Gestione di Laguna e Ambiente) per la caratterizzazione litologica dei fondali nell'area del Golfo di Oristano, della Penisola del Sinis e dell' Isola di Mal di Ventre in una profondità compresa tra i 10 e i 60 metri.

Nell'ambito del Progetto C.A.R.G. Nazionale inserito nell'accordo Servizio Geologico Nazionale - Regione Campania, si è instaurata una convenzione fra la Regione e l'Istituto per l'Ambiente Marino Costiero per la costruzione di Cartografia Geologica Marina. L'IAMC ha quindi progettato diverse Campagne Oceanografiche per l'acquisizione di un dataset aggiornato che consentisse la realizzazione di queste carte. Dal 14 Maggio al 12 Giugno 2005 è stata effettuata una Campagna Oceanografica, Carg05_03, con la N/o Thetis, con responsabile scientifico il dott. Renato Tonielli, per i rilievi batimetrici di due settori: Il primo è situato nel Golfo di Salerno nella fascia batimetrica tra i 10 e i 200 m di profondità delle aree nei Fogli Foce Sele (486) e Agropoli (502).

Nell'ambito del progetto di collaborazione tra l'Università degli Studi di Catania - Dipartimento di Ingegneria Civile ed Ambientale e l'Istituto per l'Ambiente Marino Costiero (IAMC) - sede Geomare del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR), nei mesi di Settembre 2001 e Settembre 2002 sono state progettate e realizzate campagne oceanografiche per lo studio e il monitoraggio della "morfodinamica di macroforme di fondo" di un settore prospiciente lo Stretto di Messina.
