Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common complication during pregnancy with an increasing prevalence worldwide. Early prediction of GDM and its associated adverse outcomes is crucial for timely intervention and improved maternal and fetal health. The objective of this review is to provide a comprehensive summary of contemporary evidence on biomarkers, focusing on their potential to predict the development of GDM and serve as predictors of maternal, fetal, and neonatal outcomes in women with GDM. A literature search was conducted in the PubMed database using relevant terms. Original research articles published in English between 1 January 2015, and 30 June 2024, were included. A two-stage screening process was employed to identify studies on biomarkers for GDM diagnosis and prognosis and to evaluate the evidence for each biomarker's diagnostic performance and its potential prognostic correlation with GDM. Various biochemical markers, including adipokines, inflammatory markers, insulin resistance markers, glycemic markers, lipid profile markers, placenta-derived markers, and other related markers, have shown promise in identifying women at risk of developing GDM and predicting adverse pregnancy outcomes. Several promising markers with high predictive performance were identified. However, no single biomarker has demonstrated sufficient accuracy to replace the current diagnostic criteria for GDM. The complexity of multiple pathways in GDM pathogenesis highlights the need for a multi-marker approach to improve risk stratification and guide personalized management strategies. While significant progress has been made in GDM biomarker research, further studies are required to refine and validate these markers for clinical use and to develop a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to GDM prediction and management that can improve maternal and child health outcomes. Noonan syndro me is a rare autosomal dominant congenital abnormality associated with a gene defect located on the short arm of chromosome 12. It is characterized by dysmorphic facies, webbed neck, short stature, lymphatic obstruction, cardiac anomalies, and intellectual disability. Prenatal diagnosis of Noonan syndrome is rare because there are no pathognomonic sonographic signs. Studies on the prenatal sonographic features of Noonan syndrome have been reported in very limited numbers. This case series of severe fetal Noonan syndrome, together with a literature review, was conducted to establish prenatal sonographic features highly suggestive of Noonan syndrome to facilitate early detection by clinicians. This study reveals that Noonan syndrome has a relatively specific pattern, which facilitates prenatal molecular genetic diagnosis. Increased nuchal translucency (NT) in the late first trimester and fluid collection in the early second trimester could be warning signs for follow-up, prompting further investigation to detect late-onset features and leading to molecular genetic confirmation. Most structural abnormalities appear in the second trimester, with progressive changes noted throughout gestation. This review better characterizes the sonographic features of fetal Noonan syndrome based on a larger sample size, illustrating a wider spectrum of prenatal phenotypes, including lymphatic drainage disorders, cardiac abnormalities, polyhydramnios, and absent ductus venosus. Background: Understanding the potential risk factors for failure of pregnancy termination is crucial for informed clinical decision making. Such insights can assist clinicians in adjusting the dosage or route of various regimens, as well as in counseling patients and predicting the likelihood of successful outcomes. However, research on these risk factors has been limited, and existing studies have yielded inconsistent results. To address this gap, we conducted a study with a large sample size, focusing on identifying the potential risk factors for failure of second-trimester termination using misoprostol as a single agent, specifically between 14 and 28 weeks of gestation. Methods: A secondary analysis based on a database of second-trimester terminations was conducted. The inclusion criteria were a singleton pregnancy, gestational age between 14 and 28 weeks, an unfavorable cervix, no spontaneous labor pain, intact membranes, and termination with misoprostol alone. Potential risk factors for failure of termination, defined as no abortion within 48 h, were analyzed using univariate and multivariate analyses. Results: A total of 1094 cases were included in the analysis, consisting of 991 successful cases and 103 (9.4%) cases of failure. The significant risk factors for failure of termination included early gestational age, live fetuses, sublingual regimen of 400 mcg every 6 h, and high maternal pre-pregnancy BMI. Previous cesarean sections and lower Bishop scores tended to increase the risk but did not reach a significant level. Conclusions: Second-trimester termination with misoprostol as a single agent was highly effective, with a failure rate of 9.4%. The risk factors for failure included gestational age, fetal viability, misoprostol regimen, and maternal pre-pregnancy BMI, suggesting that these factors should be taken into consideration for second-trimester terminations with misoprostol. A study published in the International Journal of Gynecology & Obstetrics examines the impact of β‐thalassemia/hemoglobin E (β‐thal/HbE) disease on fetal growth restriction (FGR) and preterm birth. The study finds that fetal anemia secondary to β‐thal/HbE disease increases the rates of FGR and preterm birth, as well as low birth weight fetuses. Logistic regression analysis shows that the disease is an independent factor for the development of both FGR and preterm birth. Although the sample size of the study is relatively small, the findings are consistent with other studies on similar conditions, suggesting that β‐thal/HbE disease significantly increases the risk of FGR and preterm birth.
